Gave this to my 8 year old daughter and wow? We love this book
This is the best book ever. My daughter has been catching all sorts of bugs and finally she’s able to identify them, she carries the book everywhere likes it’s her Bible or something. she does not go anywhere without that book, this thing is awesome. it has a ton of pictures and gives all the names that the insects go by and if they don’t go by name it just gives you their Latin official name pretty great book got to be the best If you found this helpful could you click “helpful” below so that I know that I’m not wasting my time filling these things out. Thanks
Excellent Book!
I actually requested that the local library consider buying a copy. They did and I checked it out. WOW. Excellent photos and I have been able to identify many insects on the North Olympic Peninsula. I ordered the book a few days after I checked the library copy out. Per Amazon order info, mine should be arriving in a few days so I will return the library copy. Photos are excellent, descriptions etc. I think anyone interested in identifying and learning more about insects will enjoy this book and likely keep a copy handy to pick up and see whatever they are trying to identify.
Great book for amateur or pro.
The organization or grouping of insects makes it easy to narrow down possible identification. Brief descriptions give a good overview without bogging you down in detail or terminology. A very enjoyable field book, which I have also used in a lab.
One of my favorite bug books now
This is the most complete book on the subject of insects and other land arthropods in the Pacific Northwest I've seen. It is my go to ID resource.
Nothing compares
I spent a lot of time in a bookstore looking at all the insect books, and none of the others for the Pacific Northwest have a good range of species. This guide has a lot, and excellent identification information. The only first choice for an insect guide in this region.
Best insect guide for amateurs and professionals alike!
I've barely cracked open the book, but can already see that the photographs are plenty and well-done, and the accompanying text is excellent. I have bought nature related guides all my life, and as far as insects go (and yes, they also include non-insects, such as spider and isopods) I have seen none to beat this book's thoroughness and quality.
Fabulous! Usefully organized, great photos and descriptions
This delightful book is a treasure for any hiker or gardener curious about the insects of our region. Hard to put down once you turn a page.
Beautiful color photos
I do wish more reference books would spiral bind their books, this is bound the normal way. The colors are beautiful and it is easy to find the section with the insect you are trying to find.
An excellent guide
A detailed and useful guide that has helped me identify many of the fascinating insects in this region.
Informative
Good pictures, and descriptions. A handy bug book to have!

Good pictures, and descriptions. A handy bug book to have!
Local bug book
Limited usefulness, not really enough useful content for insect identification.
Easy to use and comprehensive
I have bought numerous other books for insect identification and was disappointed. I purchased this book a few months back and have been very pleased. The organization, descriptions, and picture identification makes it easy to use while providing a great deal of information.
Great resource!
Bought it for my son after having a copy from the library for a while. Great info and layout!
Awesome book!
I'm really glad I purchased this book. It has large clear pictures of the insects (and spiders) of the NW.
Nature Lovers Must Have!
A concise look at nature's smallest critters! Great photos and lots of information!
An excellent resource
Very thorough with quality photographs. Covers the most common insects in the PNW as well as some of the more interesting ones!
Excellent Picturs
Very useful in identifying all the insect visitors to our gardens.
Just what I was looking for.
I really liked this book, and use it regularly. Seems to be very comprehensive of my local bugs. Easy to use layout, which helps to get into the ballpark quickly.
Great book, but not new as described
Product was supposed to be "new" but when it arrived it was visibly used with a large crease in the front and back cover, as well as a few oil stains throughout.
Great resource
This is such a great book! The photos are terrific, and there is a lot of information packed in for its size. I’m using it to ID critters in my yard.
Beautiful and educational
High quality information and construction materials of the book. I love that the whole thing is glossy color pages. Gave it to my 4yo nephew and he take it outside to go bug hunting and it has held up well.
clear and comprehensive
excellent photographs, well written
Everything you need to ID insects!
Fabulous book but a bit pricey.
Lots of information
Great book!
As a professional entomologist in the PNW, this is the book to get.
If you're looking for a book on insects in the PNW, this one is great. No book is going to have everything, but this comes close to covering nearly everything you might commonly come across, and then some. It's up to date with correct scientific names and the pictures are great. The guide by Peter and Judy Haggard is also very good. You would do very well with the pair of them in your library. When some copies showed up at the Department of Agriculture, the entomologists were all impressed. When I get sent photos for insect ID, this book is faster than googling and makes me look smart.
A Great Resource
A great resource. Key to evoking amazement and solving many local mysteries. Spittlebugs, cicadas, the Twice-stabbed Stinkbug, the Prairie Long-lippered Tiger Beetle, the Gladiator Meadow Katydid, weevils with no common name, waterscorpions, and toad bugs. Highly recommended.
Great for Kids and Adults alike
A great and insightful book. Filled with multiple pictures and sensible categories. Great hiking companion in the PNW.
