NOT IDEAL for Mandarin students, Great for ESL/ELD and Heritage Language Learners

Simplified/Traditional? Traditional character system (Taiwan/ Hong Kong/ Overseas Chinese populations) Pinyin? NONE, not even in an index form. You will have to use another dictionary tool to look up pinyin. This could work because if you're learning Cantonese, you can write in your own romanization system Grammar? Some in English, NONE IN CHINESE. Your Chinese needs to good enough to integrate new vocabulary into your existing grammatical knowledge Topics? Adult communicative opportunities in daily life Good for kids? Not at all, unless you have an incredible precocious child who wants to learn how to talk about their constitutional rights in Chinese Ideal Target Audience? Mostly ESL teachers and students, although heritage language learners can also benefit tremendously. The Oxford Picture Dictionary (English/Chinese) ranges from a decent to outright outstanding picture dictionary, depending on what you're using it for. The word "picture dictionary" can seem misleading because you may think this is marketed for kids or beginning learners. True, it has artistic renderings accompanying the words although less charming than say the "Times Goes By" series or Usborne's First Thousand Words/First Hundred Words books. This book was conceived, developed and intended to be used with adult audiences and features a variety of themes from everyday "adult" life such as trips to the bank, the office setting, emergency procedures and legal system jargon. These bits of information are far more useful when a house fire hits or when you get thrown into the slammer, compared to if you studied Usborne's First 1000 Words and memorized all farm animals on the page. Because seriously, how many times are you going to identify an bear in your daily life? So now, the issue here is WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING TO USE THIS BOOK FOR? Are you learning Mandarin? Are you teaching ESL? This books has a myriad of uses and can be adaptable for any one of them, depending on how you, the USER, approaches it. So let's look at the options. #1. You are learning Mandarin Chinese as a second language: This dictionary is not ideal, but can work if you want it to. The pictures are colored, nice, bright and large and there are a variety of less commonly used vocabulary words (e.g. dental hygienist, wood stain) that you won't find in those cutesy beginner books that almost always include colors, numbers and family members. And the text is approachable and more easily digestible compared to standard Chinese paper dictionaries. True, there is no pinyin but this could be a positive because with the presence of pinyin, a lot of learners overly rely on reading the letters instead of focusing exclusively on character recognition. You will have to research the pinyin, stroke order, radical and all that basic stuff on your own time, but that's what a reference book is for: for you to fill with your own individualized information. I don't consider the lack of pinyin a negative because too many beginners overly rely on them. There are plenty of cheap books and free internet tools where you can look up or draw the character and get the pinyin that way. Also reading this dictionary will help you develop phono-semantic awareness of Chinese characters (yes it is possible to "sound" out a Chinese character once your vocabulary is expansive enough to recognize the patterns). You will need a late intermediate to early advanced language knowledge to effectively use this book, but it's not outside of your reach. Proceed with caution and this cannot be used in isolation, but it's a good and cheap addition to your library. #2. You are a heritage Chinese language learner who speaks Mandarin relatively fluently but wants to learn how to read: Considering you have an early intermediate reading knowledge and an advanced speaking/listening fluency, this could be the perfect book for you. It does not have pinyin, but that can be good because this can aid and reinforce character recognition. It uses common communicative Chinese and depending on your background, you should have extensive information about any number of their themes. Since you're a heritage learner, your understanding of grammar should be decent and you can use new vocabulary with little difficulty in daily conversation and writing. This book isn't targeted for heritage learners, but could serve as an useful tool. #3. You are an ESL teacher who is looking for resources for your students who come from Mandarin speaking/Chinese backgrounds: Lucky you, ESL is the intended target audience of these Oxford series. If you want to provide your students with an additional supplement for vocabulary building, then this picture dictionary is good. It has a lot of pertinent "immigrant student" topics such as concepts on citizenship tests, driver licenses and job searching. The text also has conversation and dialogue guides which can be worked on individually or in pairs. It has a pronunciation guide, although it uses IPA and I'm not sure how useful that can be for a lot of ESL students out there. This definitely needs to be used in conjunction with another high quality textbook, but can be helpful for students to study on their own and reference to. And in case you're wondering, I'm a heritage Chinese language learner who teaches high school ESL and Mandarin Chinese. I bought this dictionary mostly for my own reference but I can see it working in my Mandarin classroom as a study guide or even used to draft test questions. If I were to teach with it, I would have to add my own information (pinyin, stroke order, radical, etc.), but like any reference book, you need to make it your own before it is useful in any situation.

Picture dictionary

This book contains a lot of words/phrases in daily living activities and interaction with people. This works fine for me because I already know the Chinese alphabet (Bopomofo system) and know how to look up in my Chinese-English dictionary on the pronunciation of each character (zhuyin). This book would be difficult for those who were taught the pingyin method of pronunciation because this book only shows the translation into Chinese characters but does not include either zhuyin or the pingyin (Chinese or sound-translated phonetic). This book is geared toward Chinese learning English instead of English-speaking students learning Chinese. I still don't understand why non-Chinese speaking students are taught the pingyin method of pronunciation instead of teaching them directly the alphabet (bopomofo which is the first 4 alphabet letters). Pingyin method is only the sound translation of a character. The students would not know how to look up from a Chinese-English dictionary. Whereas by learning the bopomofo alphabet, one knows how to pronounce a word; it's like once you know the English alphabet, you can more or less figure out the pronunciation no matter which way the alphabet letters are combined.

If you are Chinese and wish to learn English, this is a "must have' book.

My wife is Chinese and is in America less than a year. Her English skills were pretty poor when she came here, but her English skills are what I would fairly call at good level now, and we can talk in detail about most subjects. A large part of her ability to learn English, from such a dissimilar language as Mandarin, was the use of this book. The professor in one of her English classes recommended this book. My wife finds it of particular value in helping her learn English, and she takes it everywhere she goes in the hope she will have time to study English. It is packed with pictures with both the English and Mandarin (in Chinese symbols) names for each item. It is organized by sections beginning with Everyday Language, People, Housing, Food, Clothing, Health, Community, Transportation, Work, Areas of Study, Plants and Animals, and Recreation. She considers this book to be one of her most valuable resources to help her learn and improve her English skills.

Excellent choice, but....

My ONLY criticism of this well designed book is the Chinese is written in traditional Chinese characters and not simplified. There is a difference making it difficult for some students. I still gave it 5 stars.

BEST BY FAR book for Chinese long term visitor or new resident to USA

This BY FAR is the best book for my newly adopted sons (ages 12 & 13) from China used to understand English and situations here in USA. There are categories of subjects with 1) English word 2) Chinese word 3) Picture of subject/situation. It is set up in categories too so you can learn more about which category/situation would help you the best. We would review the situation (what is a party, civic duty, occupations, etc.) Sometimes I would give them assignments to memorize 1-2 pages and then we would have a quiz on those pages. The boys used their ipads to learn pronounciation and then we went over it together. It gives you something besides flashcards (which we do too) to help them learn common words/situations that will be helpful to them. I think this would be good for persons 10+ to adult coming to the USA to live or visit long term.

Learn Chinese basics

Great book

Beginner learning

Very useful for Beginner English learning. It has both English and Chinese words also pictures. Easy to understand.

The worst pictionary I've ever seen.

It didn't even have "jade" in it. It stunk.

very helpful to learn basic English vocabulary

I don't know any Chinese, but I am able to teach a Chinese speaking student, with no English, the basic vocabulary of everyday life. All the pictures are labeled in English and Chinese. Pictures are of everyday settings and places. It also allows you to go beyond just words into phrases and sentences. Great for home study as well.

I love it! A dictionary with pictures!

It is very useful for people who don't know English very well and new to US. Bilingual dictionary helps people understand well both in English and Chinese. This is a picture dictionary, and easy to understand either for students or adults. If you want to learn Chinese or English, this is a best choice for you.

An Excellent Picture Dictionary for English Teachers in China.

I am the director of studies for a private English language instruction company in a big city in the south of China. My company has great resources, but I had felt that the time had come to have an additional book resource for vocabulary building for beginner students. The Oxford Picture Dictionary in English and Chinese was highly recommended, and has become an asset to our academic department and for hundreds of students. Illustrating meaning is a wonderful way to impart new vocabulary words to newcomers to the English language. To get reputable and accurate translation is hard to come by in China, and Oxford does it with impeccable style and accuracy. Bravo, Oxford Picture Dictionary!

Excellent teaching tool

I use this to tutor a native Chinese speaker and find this to be a wonderful tool for teaching. She appreciates the translations that accompany the pictures and I like the index to look up pictures that enhance our lessons. I dont believe that this would be very helful for independent study, especially because there is no pronunciation guide. It is clearly designed for Chinese who want to learn some basic English.

Picture Perfect

I am a literacy volunteer and purchased this for my student. She has found it so helpful, as I have. When there is limited knowledge of English it can be difficult to explain simple objects, etc. However, this Dictionary contains so much information and her family has found useful as well. Her young son is learning Chinese and her mother is learning some English. There are many people pictured at jobs and it allows us to have a very fruitful discussion and I can see that by having the pictures the understanding is so much better.

DO NOT BUY THE EBOOK VERSION

Disclaimer: This review is more about the Amazon Kindle for PC app as opposed to the book itself. I am referring to the eBook version. While I understand the need to protect the ebooks as intellectual property, hence the dedicated app for reading kindle books, Amazon needs to be publicly excoriated for the piece of garbage of kindle reader, especially considering it is the only platform on which these books I paid for can be read. The app itself is bare bones. Although it might help to list out file size or downloading time, it is not a big deal. what is unforgivable is that the app constantly freezes, shuts down and every time it restarts, the previous download progress disappears and it needs to start again. Twice I waited for the book to finish downloading only to have the app shut down in the last minute. It frustrated me to no end for such an atrocious performance. Amazon really ought to be ashamed of itself for publishing such a flawed and dysfunctional app. Seeing as I won't be able to read the book I paid for, I demand a full refund.

This is an excellent ESL picture dictionary resource

This is an excellent ESL picture dictionary resource, well worth the price. My students find their copies very helpful, particularly the realistic art work showing real life situations w-words & phrases in both English & their native language.

Great for daily conversational English

I bought this for my mother to accompany her adult English as a second language course. It is setup like a comic strip where each word will have a picture. Note: The level is really only suitable for Chinese learning Basic English. Things such as greetings, holidays, transportation, dates, food etc.

Helpful

Good for primary learner. I send this gift to my friend. And she like it very much! :)

I've been using this book for 6 years. This book is very helpful, I like it very much. It made my life in America easier and more comfortable.

We like the pictures associate to the words, however, there areas are to be improved to be a great book.

Handy Dictionary

I use this when teaching ESL and citizenship. It helps me to get across a word meaning. However, it doesn't help with pronunciation and my Chinese students don't find it especially useful. I do recommend it as a very helpful visual aid and have bought two of them already.

a useful book

You can learn new words systematically. But almost of the words are nouns. It will be better if some verbs and adjectives can be collected in the book.

No Pinyin. This severely limits the use of this book.

Without phonetic pronunciation, this book is useless, unless you are a Chinese person seeking to learn English. Would not buy again.

Should let buyers know that it's in traditional character. The wording of some items are more commonly used in Taiwan but not in China.

Invaluable tool

My wife and stepdaughter have been using this book daily since coming to America and it has proven immensely useful for all of us. The book is amazingly comprehensive, tackling a variety of scenarios and vocabulary, far beyond what I've seen in other picture dictionaries. It features over 4,000 words covering 241 color pages (with both illustrations and photographs), divided into twelve chapters covering recreation, plants and animals, areas of study, work, transportation, community, health, clothing, food, housing, people, and everyday language. It also has an index at the end with phonetic pronunciations as well as Chinese characters. Clearly, this book will be used until it literally falls apart. At this rate, I'm considering laminating each page and putting it in a three ring binder because it's simply that consistently referenced. As others have noted, this is not a tool for English speakers looking to learn Mandarin Chinese, unless you already know the characters/symbols, as Pinyin is NOT used. If you are looking for an invaluable tool for a speaker of Mandarin Chinese who is learning English however, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Good

Soso. ,if have the video ,is very good! Do you have video for this book .I want to buy . Very good

One of my teachers told me that this book uses ...

One of my teachers told me that this book uses traditional writing and Taiwanese vocabulary, so is not as suitable for those planning on going to the mainland.

it is more useful for people in Taiwan

there are Tradition Chinese. it is more useful for people in Taiwan. but Chinese people also can understand it.

An error

I just received it and spotted an error at the first glance. In the office supplies section, the Chinese translation for "organizer" (picture is a planner in a leather case) means "pencil-box." I wouldn't expect this for a dictionary. Overall it seems good, though.

Great for ESL Students

I am an ESL teacher and the majority of my students are Chinese speakers. They LOVE this book. They can't get enough of it and they want to buy it to use at home. I agree with the other reviewers that this book is best for native Chinese speakers who want to learn English. There is no pinyin and I would not recommend it for Americans who want to learn Chinese unless they are already very literate in Chinese.

I'm very glad to have it.

I'm very glad when I found out about this book the very first time. It's a very good way to learn new words. I'm a visial learner. I learn much better when there is a picture of the thing I'm learning. To review the new words I learn, I cover the English word and tell the new word by looking at the picture. I can learn so many names of something without the phisical present of these things at home. I'm loving this book. By the way, this book is not for leaning Chinese. This book is designed for Chinese students to learn English only.

Very useful for ESL classes.

I bought this book for my Chinese student who could not speak or read English at all. The Chinese characters help her to remember the english words even though they do not have the pronunciation. In three months, she can start carrying a conversation in English with broken English. But at least she can communicate with us. The grouping by weather, color, daily routines etc. help me to concentrate on a subject and make teaching much easier.

Not for Chinese learners

This dictionary has one fundamental flaw which renders it useless to lower-level English-speaking students learning Chinese. NO PINYIN. Apparently, the dictionary is addressed to Chinese students. As a beginnger learner, I opted for Longman Visual Dictionary and one from DK.

Practical book

I think this book is really practical. Especial for beginner, it will help him learn fast and easily. Not only building vocabulary but also learning to use the words in real world are covered well in the book.

Lacks Pinyin so the OPD Chinese is useless for English speakers

We ordered and purchased the OPD Chinese, but it's not truly BI-lingual. It's one-way, good only for those who read Chinese characters fluently. You can't use it to learn Chinese, because it contains NO pinyin (pronunciation method for Chinese using ABC). What a waste.

excellent resource for helping someone learn English

Purchased as a good to help a neighbor learn english. It works great, She can point to a picture if she is unsure of the pronunciation and I can help her, even though I don't speak any Chinese.

Great book for English Learning

High quality and very useful.

Good book

My friend suggested that I buy it, which is helpful for learning English. It is a very good book to teach from simple words.

Nice

The picture in this book is good. My daughter likes it.

This is a must for anybody learning English from China

This is a fantastic book in for me who speaks English and my wife is from China and her she's learning English when we're having a translation issue I can point to the picture and the English word and the Mandarin word and she gets it it has helped her immensely I only wish you would found it a year earlier

Disappointment

I intended to buy this book because I have read it in the library and found it very useful. However, the one received looks quite different than that in the library. I highly suspect what I get is a pirate judging by its paper quality and cutting.

Useful stuff

It's very good and useful stuff recommended by the home teacher of my son. It can be commonly used by day-to-day communications.

Very Good Book

We were letting our Chinese class use these until they have completed the lessons for the year. They love them so much that they want their own copies to take back to China with them. They make it very easy to teach, even if you know no Chinese yourself.
