Our Lady's Wardrobe

I bought this book based on a blog review. I was so very disappointed, there was no theology as to why Mary appeared in the garments that she did as well as Mary looking the same, very European, on every page. The illustrations were some what eerie mix of computer generated and pictures with all the girls being the same model. I had hope to inspire my nieces who fixated on clothing to understand that their clothing choices speak of their heart's intent and to understand why Mary chose her garments carefully for each apparition, instead this book just left the read with more superficial ideas of clothing.

DeStefano hits another one out of the park! If children learn about Mary by her wardrobes, they will learn the backgrounds of Mary's great appearances on earth and why she came. An adult can read this in ten minutes, but put this in the hands of even a young child who can read and they can spend hours! There are just enough words for them to have to grapple with to introduce them to each wardrobe; but, if pictures are worth a thousand words, the artwork on each page is enough to tell a story to a child, to create "wonder" within them, and the desire for them to want to know more. Beautifully illustrated book! Any book about the Blessed Mother is a winner for me. We can’t have enough books about Her and this one did not disappoint!! We loved all of Mary’s heavenly clothes which were very different depending on where in the world she appeared. The book highlights all of the well known and approved Marian apparition sites such as Fatima, Lourdes, Guadalupe, Knock, and Rue de Bac in Paris. An excellent book for every family!!

Each of the illustrations in the book is a framable work of art. It is why I bought the book. The author touches on many of Mary's approved appearances on Earth after her death. It doesn't spend much space explaining any single appearance, and I felt it was confusing to my four-year-old granddaughter because of that. She usually loves to have me read to her, but she did become bored half-way through this one. Perhaps if the author had not written in rhyme and just told the stories briefly, it would have been more understandable to her. I realize, though, that in children's books, there is only so much space allowed and Dr. Suess was a rhyming genius. The beauty of Mary should be expressed more in her spiritual attributes than her clothes. Disney Princesses and LOL dolls have my granddaughter somewhat of a fashion diva already.

Even my nine year old daughter agreed and wanted to send it back. Pictures were beautiful, but not worth it.

I was very excited for this book, but upon receiving it am left wanting more. This book is a wonderful concept. However, it was poorly executed. Every representation of Mary is with pale skin. Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego are the only people of included and they both have white skin. Our Lady in Czestochowa isn’t even mentioned. I would love to see an update to this book that shows the full spectrum of Our Lady’s Wardrobe.

I agree with the reviewers who said the wrong message was conveyed, and her clothing choices where not explained. Why did she wear red in Mexico? Why did she have a blue veil? The video on amazon will give you a good idea of how she is made to look the same in every apparition, which she herself chose NOT to do. Here are some other inaccuracies: One page said Our Lady of Mt. Carmel "Wore a golden crown and held a tiny scapular" Well no, she had no crown on when she appeared to St. Simon, and the scapular she held out to him was very large. It's almost as if they had the pictures commissioned and then wrote the text to match. Also it said she founded the Carmelites and that they serve the poor. Carmelites are our Lady's order but she didn't found it, and they are not an order that serves the poor. More importantly perhaps is the fact that the snake on the miraculous medal is MISSING. What? That is the whole point, the snake with it's head being crush by the Blessed Virgin refers to Genesis and the Immaculate Conception directly. If Our Lady thought it important to appear that way, who would dare change it? On Our Lady of Knock, the Lamb on the altar is missing from the picture about the apparition. Again, a critical point that could easily be incorporated and was not. I left 3 stars instead of 1 because the artwork is at least very pretty and could be used in crafts and such. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my copy though, since I didn't realize these things all at once and now my return window is up. I would go with the Mary Fabian Windett colouring books instead of this series any day.

There is a rather popular review about this book judging on how many times it was deemed helpful to other people considering this book. That review is rather negative and is almost entirely focused on shortcomings. While I can agree to some degree with only a few of the negative criticisms - eg, CGI’d Euro-looking Mary, I believe that the reviewer is imposing their mature Catholic outlook and getting lost in minutia. The shortcomings are negligible when you consider that you are buying this book for a very young child. What the book does very well and I believe that this is all the author was trying to do is give a wonderful illustration of how it is one-and-the-same Mary appearing in different ways throughout the ages. He even figured out how to make the text rhyme, which is a bonus in my opinion. If this is a purchase for a first time Catholic reader who is under the age of 10 then I really think you will enjoy making this contribution to a young child’s Catholic library.

I, as an adult, am in love with this gorgeous book. Written with so much heart sharing the Blessed Virgin who has an amazing closet of outfits she wears when she come to visit. Shares the Catholic faith in a charming way without batting us over the head with the Bible. Have read this story at least 20 times to groups of children. They are captivated! Mouths open awaiting the next page. Requested to be read again. The ILLUSTRATIONS are a treasure so well done they should be framed! Best book purchase I've made this year! Honored to have shared with over 200 little ones. I never tire of reading this book. Anthony DeStephano is an amazing author for children (and has great books for adults, too) Love this author!

I had seen this book on Amazon for a while, and the title drew me to it. Finally, curiosity got the better of me and I had to order it to read myself. "Our Lady's Wardrobe" is a unique idea for a book--at least I haven't seen anything like it before. It's a charming book, and warmed my heart to read. The pictures are lovely, too. I found myself drawn closer to Our Blessed Mother. I highly recommend it for children and for an adult who may want to look at the pictures and read the pages for a few escape moments in our otherwise hectic lives.

I bought this for my 4 year old daughter after seeing the stunning illustrations l, but my 7 year old son reads it sometimes too and even my 10 year old son is delighted with the illustrations of Heaven! My kids are very interested in what Heaven is like and the Marian apparitions. My sons have been to Medjugorje and I wanted to teach them about other times she’s appeared. This book is a great way to introduce the different apparitions of Our Lady. Unfortunately, no African depictions of Our Lady in apparitions, but maybe that will be in the next edition. The book provides an authentic Latina depiction of Our Lady in Our Lady of Guadalupe. The boys don’t care much about clothes, but after my 7 year old son read it, he told me he’d like a scapular and a miraculous medal. And my daughter adores Mary’s modest and beautiful fashion choices, representing her love for Christ on the inside. Thank you for this great tool for introducing my kids to the Marian apparitions.

I bought this book primarily for my 8 year old granddaughter, but as we read it out loud together, her four brothers were soon crowding around. The oldest, about to turn 10, asked which picture showed Our Lady of Fatima, as he remembered he was born on the date of her last apparition and the Miracle of the Sun. The pictures are beautiful and appealing to the children. The book serves as a good springboard for discussions about the Mother of Jesus. I recommend it.

Our whole family loves this book! Absolutely gorgeous. My 4 year old son enjoys looking at the pictures while we say the Rosary. The model of Mary is beautiful, humble and definitely made us feel closer to our Heavenly Mother. My sister is a professional artist and she couldn't put it down either! We are grateful for all who worked to publish this book, excellent!

I bought this book for my two granddaughters for Christmas. I had heard an interview with the author that intrigued me to look into it. Depending on the age you may want to read it to younger children, but older children could read it, it is written in rhyme. I wasn't disappointed, it is. beautiful book explaining the different titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I will definitely buy this book again as gifts.

My family loves books, and this is honestly my FAVORITE book that we own for our children. I have three girls ages 4, 2, and 3 months. My 4 year old loves all things princess, loves dressing up, only wears "twirly" dresses, and this book has helped her to love Mary by teaching her about all of the dresses Mary has worn during her apparitions. She now takes my scarves and wears them on her head to dress up like Mary just as often as she dresses up as a princess. I love it! Cannot recommend enough for any little Catholic girls. Beautiful illustrations, easy-to-read prose holds the attention of my squirrelly 2 year old as well.

I sent this to my mother for her birthday, I don't think I could have chosen anything better. She LOVED it! This book is not only beautiful but inspiring. Would give it 10 stars if I could!

I was hesitant to buy this book because it seemed...odd. I'm so glad I got it for my kids. The artist's images of Mary are stunningly beautiful. The apparitions included in the book are, to my knowledge, all approved: Mt. Carmel, Guadalupe, Miraculous Medal, Knock, Lourdes, and Fatima. It's a gorgeous addition to our collection of Catholic books for our kids.

This is a perfect teaching tool for younger - and even older - children. The illustrations are perfect! The message is simple, clear, and beautiful. It reviews Our Lady's apparitions in various times and places in a child-friendly, truthful way. Our three young boys, ages 8 and under, love it!

This was the first children’s book by author Anthony DeStefano that I bought. I heard him speak about using the best illustrators available for the book. It is amazing. It makes you think about Mary and all of her apparitions and how she was dressed differently for each place she appeared. Really a beautiful book.

A wonderful book that has a unique way of depicting Our Lady and how she comes to us in our native culture. I think this could be inspirations for children to play dress up as Our Lady and learn her messages. Imagine the fruit of this kind of play time!

I heard of this book on the radio and quickly found it here. It has such beautiful illustrations and it’s written with such ease. My kids loved it and my oldest understood better what everything meant and how all in all it’s our Blessed Mother just choosing her gowns carefully.

At first, I wondered why humble Mary would even care about her clothes, but then I saw that the book is really about how she appeared to visionaries, and the messages she brought to them. Beautiful illustrations make this a perfect book for girls and boys.

My three granddaughters, their mother and I were so pleased with the drawings and the story. Even my eleven-year-old grandson hung around the room's periphery, listening as I read the story to his little sisters - all the while feigning disinterest! This book surely will encourage love for our Blessed Mother, Full of Grace, in her many visits to the littlest.

This is a sturdy, well-made book with beautiful illustrations. The text kept my toddler granddaughter engaged, and her 14 year old brother even came over to look. This is a quality book, much better than I had anticipated. I'd definitely buy books by this author again.

I bought this beautiful book to share with my Granddaughters. It is very well done and gives me an opportunity to go into more detail about each of Our Lady's appearances. I was inspired to look into Children's editions of the saints in our local library. I grew up hearing these stories, but the children today are usually not exposed to them. I am very pleased with this book and happy that I purchased it.

Little girls may especially appreciate this book. The pictures are quite pretty to look at showing The Blessed Virgin Mary in her Beauty as she appears on earth, and in Heaven.

I love this book because of the way it is written, giving the simple and caring background of each of Our Lady's appiritions. I purchased 2 of these and will probably buy more for our younger grandchildren, using it as a teaching tool to expand on how and why Mary continues to meet us and draw us closer to her Son.

This is a beautiful book, well written and illustrated. I purchased one for my granddaughter’s 6th birthday and am now going to order a second for my soon to be five year old granddaughter! This is a great introduction to Our Lady and some of her many titles, while keeping it simple and interesting, especially for the young girls who love to dress up themselves!

This is a beautiful book with great detail. It is a wonderful gift to teach kids about the role of Mary in the history of the Catholic Church. I bought thi for my daughter who loves wearing princess dresses and jewelry so seeing Mary in her different outfits peeled her interest and had her engaged right away.

This book is very nice for younger children. It covers several of Marian apparitions and encourages use of the scapular and miraculous medal. My favorite part of the book is actually the pages showing Heaven. They are so beautiful and peaceful. My daughter said she would love to live there.

I gave this book to my 6 year old grand daughter. It is a timeless "keeper". Perfectly accomplishing the depiction of Our Blessed Mother's love for the world and the many ways she has appeared throughout time, to assure us of that love! Using Mary's wardrobe as the manner to convey that message, is unique idea, and perfect for young children!

I bought this mainly for the illustrations which I thought were stunning. Whoever the girl is that the artist used to portray the Blessed Mother is adorable.

Loved it and bought it for all my families that have little girls, especially since they love to dress up. It's a great way to introduce them to their heavenly mother. The girls were two 4 year old girls, one is in the womb and her sister will read it to her. Also another was 6 and another 7.

I used this beautiful book to teach my Catholic Girl Scouts who are working on their religion medal about Mary. I will also use this in my CCD class.

Unique idea and a interesting View of the appearances of the Blessed mother.

The pages are beautifully illustrated. Colors are vibrant. I gave the book to my granddaughters who are moving into the pre teens. This book helps them learn about modesty in their dress.

This book has beautiful illustrations, and is very good for children to get to know Our Lady in her various appearances. I would highly recommend it.

Gentle story

I found something quite disturbing about the illustrations--the lifeless child's face lost among vibrant garments. It struck me as off, so I did a little web search on the illustrator. Many of the illustrator's works feature demonic figures. Why would a Catholic publisher choose such an illustrator for a Catholic book? Beyond disappointed--I'm actively concerned. The lack of judgment here exercised is alarming. Trying to generate interest in the Blessed Mother based on the shallow starting point of "clothing" is bad enough, but working with an artist who is clearly fascinated with the demonic...? Why, Sophia Press, why?

The concept behind this book is brilliant, but the execution left a lot to be desired. For example, Mary is blue-eyed through all of the images and only white apparitions were chosen. Also, there are some simple factual errors that made me wonder how much research went into it- Mary did not stand on a holly tree at Fatima, and the chair that she sat in at the Miraculous Medal apparition was not ornate and elaborate. A simple Google search shows what the chair really looks like. It's still there after all. I really wish the content had been of a higher quality and that the illustrations showed more diversity. It was a great opportunity to talk about the different apparitions and the choice of clothing and the symbolism behind them.

The Blessed Mother has so many titles - more than a hundred! - that keeping them straight can be a challenge, especially for children. Our Lady's Wardrobe is a lavishly illustrated introduction to several of the most common titles, most of which are tied to Marian apparitions. Mary's features appear the same in each illustration, providing children with the continuity needed to identify her in each illustration. Using the wardrobe as a simple metaphor that is both understandable to children and especially appealing to many young girls, Mary selects how she will appear in a particular time and place. The illustrations are paired with mellifluous rhyming text that gives a thumbnail sketch of the locale and circumstances of each apparition. Our Lady's Wardrobe is a lovely read-aloud book for young children with beautiful illustrations that captivate children and adults alike.
