Some kids like to dance and laugh out loud, and some sit quietly and make up stories in their heads--we're all different and that's okay, because the Maker of everything made us this way! In their first picture book, bestselling author Sally Clarkson and her son Nathan encourage children on the journey to discovering their strengths. The mother-and-son duo draws on themes from their first book, Different, the emotive story of Nathan's experiences growing up with mental illness and learning disabilities and Sally's journey to loving him unconditionally. With the powerful truth that what makes you different makes you great, Only You Can Be You will help children embrace their differences and celebrate the differences in others.

An inspiring book for children of all ages!

If you are around children, have children, or were a child, you probably know that children are all unique!;) It can be difficult to be a child and feel like no one understands you or that you don't fit in. Well, this delightful children's book is an encouragement to all children to know that all of the things that make them who they are were given to them by the Creator and make them special. They will be inspired by the diversity of children and animals throughout the book that are colorfully illustrated and show that our differences are what make us great!

Critical Message for Children!

As a mom of five, I can see the differences in all my kids literally from the moment they are born. Each of them are unique in every way. They all learn differently, grow differently, act differently, love differently, etc., etc. I can see that their differences can reveal their true gifts from God. The rhythm and rhyme of this book will stick with children and help them to see what makes them different is by God's design and makes them great!

Adorable high quality book on a much needed subject

I have been reading Sally Clarkson's books for years now and love them, but this is the first time for a children's book. I gave it a shot based on the subject matter and author and I am so glad that I did. It is adorable with cute illustrations and fun rhyming text. The message of how we are all different and God made us that way is so needed in this divided world. I highly recommend it for parents, grandparents, and teachers.

Fantastic first Clarkson children's book! Way to go Sally and Nathan!

I'm a big Sally Clarkson fan, especially of her Desperate and Different books. I immediately jumped at the chance to get her first children's book--I've already read it multiple times to my children (ages 3-11) as well as a moms group that I'm a part of. This is a perfect gift. The illustrations and text are wonderful. I love the variety of animals and children. It's also simple enough that younger readers will be able to read on their own after a few read throughs with their adult.

This book is a treasure!

What an amazing book! This is filled with a beautiful message to read to my children about how their personalities are different and unique made by God. My children are all under 7, and I hope the message of this book stays in their heart until they’re 97! It is such an important concept for children to grasp. It’s also important for parents to grasp, as too often the world says children’s personalities are “too loud” or “too shy”. No, they’re just as God made them to be! The illustrations are also whimsical and beautiful. My kids giggled over all the kids and animals mixed together doing kid activities. This book is a delight and a treasure!

Messy rhymes and toxic masculinity message.

First issue I had with this book is that the rhymes are very sloppy and some are really not close at all. "Life" and "shy" don't rhyme. My second issue was the main reason for returning - the page that essentially implies that you can EITHER be tough with muscles and strength or you can be someone who is tender and cries - the message that people who are tough and strong do not cry is the opposite of what I want my kids to learn.

Love it!

Loved this message and the size of the board book! The first pic is to show how big the book is! We love it and are big fans of Sally Clarkson!

Precious

First off, I didn’t pay attention to what kind of binding the book is listed under, and was thrilled when I pulled it out of the box and it’s a hardback! Secondly, the illustrations are enchanting. Each page has so much in it, and your (or your kids’...) eyes can wander all over the page with pleasure. Third, and finally, what a sweet reminder to both our children and ourselves that there is so much beauty in diversity. It was a great purchase, and my kids keep carrying it around with them.

Everyone with kiddos needs this book!

This is my sons favorite book, and I love it too. I love the way it celebrates the differences in each of our children. We have a blended family of biological and adopted, so it’s especially important to us that each one of our kids know that we celebrate the way they were made by God. Every difference in personality, experience, talent, etc. is wonderful. Love learning from Sally and her family and so glad she and Nathan decided to write this book.

Sweet, easy to read story telling a vital message to our children

My kids loved this book the first time we read it together and have reread it over and over again. This is a book that reminds children that they are special, even if they look or act differently. Sally and Nathan communicate this message in a fun, clear, and engaging way. The art is delightful. I have three children, 6-9 years old, one of whom is on the Autism spectrum. It was an important message for all of them to hear together. I've been able to refer my children back to the book in discouraging situations. Sally and Nathan do a

So encouraging

So blessed to be able to read this to my boys. Encouraging them that they may not be exactly like all their friends or have the same interests, but they are designed exactly the way they were meant to be.

Inspiring to little ones to be who they are created to be!

Such a sweet book... I love that it is so encouraging for a little one to be exactly who they are as God created them to be. Also helps me to see the qualities in my children are qualities that the Lord gave them and they are His unique creation!

Beautiful, meaningful book!

Beautiful book with a beautiful message! Sally Clarkson is the BEST at communicating beautiful, encouraging, needed messages to her readers. This is no exception.

Great message!

Love Sally and knew I could trust her with this book, such a great message and loved her and Nathan’s writing style. Truly shows how each of us is wonderfully made!

A message for all children (and even adults)

This is a sweet book celebrating the unique traits and personalities that exist in each person. We all need to be reminded of the message that is presented. Only you can be you! The artwork is beautifully done and engaging. Lots of things to look at on every page!

Absolutely delightful!

This is a delightful children's book! Emphasizing how each of them are uniquely designed by God, it will help our children celebrate the ways in which they are different, instead of feeling badly about them. God uses each of them in unique ways because of their differences, not despite them! Colorfully and creatively illustrated, it is sure to become one of your children's all-time favorites!

Such an important message!

I have followed Sally Clarkson for many years, and I love all of her books. This children’s book is a gem- it teaches children that everyone is different and created uniquely. My 5year old son loves this book!

A new favorite

My copy just arrived today, and it is already becoming a favorite. From the charming illustrations to the engaging message that we are each created in wonderfully different ways, this is a book I will read to my children again and again.

Incredible!

I just received my books that I purchased for Christmas gifts for my “grands”, and I am moved to tears after reading it and then reading to my husband. I am a mom of three very different children who are incredible adults today. I’m so thankful that Sally and Nathan wrote this book so that kids can know that they are uniquely created each with a wonderful design to do great things because “the Maker of everything made them that way.”

Love to teach to my boys

Love this book to teach my boys how wonderful and beautiful they were made and individually they will contribute to Gods greater plan

Funny and heartwarming!

I purchased this book as an early Christmas gift for our children as we celebrate advent. I was so excited to see them 13 and 9 laughing and enjoying the book! They had fun finding children in the book that reminded them of friends or each other. Excellent story and illustrations!

Wonderful book.

A delightful book with a beautiful message Everyone's different and that's okay. The Maker of everything made us that way. As the mom of three two of which are special needs makes me love this message even more.

To the heart

The artwork and message go straight to the heart. So vital for a child’s self image and unique identity. Love it!

Children’s book but also for adults. 😊

This is a sweetly written book that shares a valuable lesson we adults would do well to learn and remember! And I love the illustrations, too!

Lovely kid’s book

Always a fan of The Clarkson’s work.

Wonderful Children's Book!

I have read most of the Clarkson books, and I was so excited to hear they wrote a children's book. This is such a sweet book! We absolutely love it!

Wonderful kids book

Beautifully written! I give a book each Christmas to my kids and this one will be perfect for my youngest.

Great message!

Love this book and message!

Only YOU can be you!

Our family loves this book! The pictures are fun and grab the child’s interest. The story flows well and has a great message. We do foster care and have adopted and this book is great for letting little ones know that no matter what you look like, no matter if you are different, “The Maker of Everything “ made you that way. They don’t specifically say God, which on one hand bothers me, but I also like that it reminds a child that God did make everything and everyone, including them. There is a spot in the front where it can be inscribed as a gift, and I definitely think that it is a wonderful book for gifting. Editing to add: there are coloring sheets and activity pages! https://sallyclarkson.com/only-you-can-be-you?fbclid=IwAR1FsleTMgXgKLrUTCugzH9Vjw7LC6j3-u9rkKwumncDIoqob_QgWwJM4_Y I know that my little ones are going to be thrilled to have these to build on the book! Bless the little ones in your life with this book and it’s wonderful message!

As a mom of a child with mental health issues, this book brings me great joy

My young son has been diagnosed with OCD, so I read the book Different by the same authors of this children's book. Needless to say, I was very excited to read this book written for children in hopes it would make a difference to my kids. It did! Only You Can Be You has a wonderful message and certain things really stood out. For instance, the illustrator did a fantastic job of representing all children. I was thrilled to see a child in a wheelchair represented. I also loved how the authors teach that what some see as weaknesses are strengths, such as praising the child who is tender and cries. I highly recommend this to any families with children who are a bit different - and isn't that every family?

I love the message, the illustrations, the sentence length and the bolded key words.

With all the movements active today, I’m very concerned that my son will grow up believing the lies of Satan. I want my son to know it’s okay to be different as long as it doesn’t go against God in any way. He will face challenges not only because he has apraxia and sensory processing disorder, he also has he lives a life for Christ. With all that said, I need to be very particular about the books I allow him to read. I was recently blessed by FrontGate Media with a complimentary copy of a book that teaches God-honoring truths about our differents in a kid-friendly format. What I Liked Most About the Book Beyond the God-honoring message, I also love the illustrations, the sentence length and the bolded key words. The illustrations are made up of beautiful colors and happy fun characters that catch my son’s eye. All the children are smiling, including mine. The sentences are short, which is perfect my the short attention span my son has. The book will also be a smart reading choice when my son is ready to read. Currently, we are using the bolded key words to call out letter sounds after we are done reading the book. So, yes we are getting a little bit of school in while we read an important message. What I Didn’t Like As Much About the Book I have no complaints about this book. I always can use this book as a bridge to talk to my son about how he’s different. However, I’d love to see the author write a book on specific special needs, disabilities and learning challenges. So many kiddos struggle with autism, sensory processing disorder, blindness, deafness, dyslexia and so many other challenges. We must teach our children that it’s okay to be different and that we must love others. My Reading Experience The kiddo and I usually enjoy our stack of books while cuddling on the couch. This book was read immediately upon opening the mailer it was delivered in. It is now in that stack of books we call our favorites. Who Should Read This Book Obviously, this should be a book in any home where there are children. It should be enjoyed by the reading child, as well as the parent, grandparent or teacher that is reading to their children.

Such an encouraging message for kids and adults alike!

Diversity, individuality and authenticity are coming of age in today’s generation – Generation Z. Embracing YOU-niqueness and originality has created a sense of empowerment and acceptance that is both refreshing and full of encouragement. As a Millennial, this wasn’t always the case. I can recall times in my own adolescence where I felt like I couldn’t tap into my greatest potential or live out the gifts God has gifted me for fear of being judged, unaccepted, disrespected or inferior. There are many things wrong with the world today, but I think Gen Z has gotten something right – social acceptance. Individual expression and transparency have allowed authentic character to develop and accept people for who they are instead of for who (or what) they are not or should be. “Everyone’s different, and that’s okay. The Maker of Everything made us that way.” Only You Can Be You – What makes you different makes you great by Nathan and Sally Clarkson is a charming children’s book that beautifully illustrates this truth. Tall or short. Loud or quiet. Adventurous or reserved. Funny or serious. It doesn’t matter what we are or what we do – God created us YOU-niquely so there will ever only be one of YOU! What makes us different does make us great because each human being was created in the image of the Creator and is therefore a reflection of His perfect design. I absolutely loved reading this book (numerous times!) to my children and then highlighting their own distinctions and personal qualities and characteristics. Only You Can Be You is a delightful children’s book your whole family will enjoy. It is well-written, inspired by scripture and packed with illustrations that are playful, positive, and visually appealing. It is a book I am grateful to have on my family’s shelves and I hope you will consider adding it to yours as well

Beautiful book that inspires and brings out the best in everyone.

I thoroughly loved this book and love reading it to my children. It delivers a perfect mix of appreciation for our differences while reminding everyone that we all possess something special because of them. To me, this is one of the most important things that you can teach children about. The illustrations are fun and inclusive and helps to carry the positive message the book is sending out. I like how care was given to detail the characteristics and actions that children can sometimes exhibit. These make excellent stopping points to take time out and talk to them about these things. The animals and people are drawn in a way that is both playful and uplifting. I also appreciate that they reference the "Maker of Everything." This may not be acceptable by all people, and I understand that, but it does encompass a large group of people out there, who, like me, believe there truly is a "Maker of Everything" and that faith brings me great happiness. It was clever of the writers to not name the "Maker" specifically. This would be a wonderfully warm book to give a first-grade child level and above as a gift. It is so positive that anyone who reads it with an open heart will cherish it. The writers obviously have a gift for dealing with this type of subject matter and it shows in every delightful page. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to read it. 5 warm stars.

Sweet childrens book about God Makes Each One Different

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK WOW! I love, love this sweet childrens book! And I love the theme, and the journey authors Sally and her son Nathan Clarkson takes readers on explanning how God makes us all different. And He makes us all great. I love reviewing awesome children’s books like this because of the importance of teaching our children about God. This book goes a step farther by teaching our children that it’s ok to be different. Our God makes everyone special and unique. And we are perfectly made because it is God who made us. And He makes NO mistakes. And I can’t leave out the awesome illustrations by Tim Warnes. Each page is filled with unique pictures that are fun, enlightening, enjoyable, and are created just right to catch the eye of every child that sees the book. This is sure one that your child or children will be snatching from the store shelves. I very highly recommend this adorable hard cover book. A copy of this book was given to me by the author or publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. The opinions here in this review are totally mine alone. So precious!

We are all so very different. I look at my four children, all from the same mom and dad, and see four very, very different beings. They all act completely different, they learn different, they like different things, they are all so unique. The same can be said for my brother, my sisters, and myself. Four of us all from the same mom and dad, yet oh so different. While differences are so wonderful, sometimes it can be hard to find that place where we fit in. Especially for children. Often times kids follow other kids just trying to fit in. In their brand new children's book, Only You Can Be You, mother and son team Sally and Nathan Clarkson help our kids understand that what makes them different makes them great. They also learn that "the Maker of everything made us that way." This book is beautiful! The illustrations, done by Tim Warnes, are colorful and fun. The rhyming words are catchy. And the message is one our kids (and dare I say us adults) need. If you are looking for a children's book, I highly recommend Only You Can Be You.

Delightful book everyone will adore!!

My kids may be taller than me and think they are all grown up, but I still read to them. Sometimes I have to bribe them to listen, sometimes I do it in the car with an audio book (think captive audience). When I opened the package with this book I would not help but read it out loud to my people. I just love this book so much!! Surprisingly, they listened too! In. a world where the message is that you need to look and act like everyone else, Sally Clarkson and her son Nathan Clarkson have written another book to help kids (of all ages) realize they are perfect with all their differences and quirks!! Only You Can Be You The illustrations in this book are just perfect! And the story will grab each and every child and speak to their heart! I love Sally and Nathan Clarkson and their hearts to share God’s love with everyone! NOTE : I received a copy of Only You Can Be You in exchange for an honest review.

You are a Perfect in every way!

Great illustrations, great message! My 5 year old child is in Kindergarten and this book is fantastic for her now that she’s around more kids. It’s very positive towards all those differences and I really love its positive message: we are all different, but that’s OK! Opens up conversations of her own uniqueness. I recommend it to anyone! **If this review was helpful, please take a (literal) second and press the button below to let Amazon know. Thank you!**

Wonderful message for kids

If children feel they’re different from everyone else, they might not feel like they fit in. Or worse, they may even believe they’re not good enough. But Only You Can Be You says that’s just not true. Kids may be loud or shy. Tall or short. Funny or wishful. Tough or tender. Each personality characteristic is illustrated to show them in a positive light. There are no two children just the same, and it’s their differences that make them uniquely themselves. “Everyone’s different, and that’s okay. The Maker of everything made us that way.” This delightful book celebrates everyone’s special uniqueness, reminding them that God didn’t make a mistake – He created them just the way they are. What a wonderful, hope-filled message for kids! Reviewer: Alice Berger

This is such a great book for kids about accepting and embracing differences.

I have a special needs kiddo with some with disabilities, so getting books that have a great theme about acceptance and loving yourself for who you is important in our family. This is a bright and colorful book with a sweet and lovely message about exactly that - it's often your differences from "normal" that make you great, and there's no one else who can be you! My son loves reading this book, and I received the hardback version, which has sturdy covers and great page quality. He loves the images in them and it's simple enough for him to understand while he is reading it. Very encouraging and adorable - it gets two thumbs up from this household!

Great words to a young generation...

This book is adorable and sweet! The illustrations perfectly fit the encouraging message on each page. They feature animals and kids from every walk of life. Asian, African American, Caucasian, in a wheelchair, etc. The message is that God made each of us unique and special. That we all have something to offer, no matter what we look like. That our personalities and looks may differ but that's because "the Maker of everything made you that way." The words and rhythms flow off the tongue, keep kids interested in the sing-song message. The illustrations are well done and the overall construction of the book is sturdy. A+ in my book!

What makes you different makes you GREAT!

Super cute book to celebrate the differences each kid is born with. This book has mild religious content and sends the message that everyone is different yet created perfectly by God. I really like how diverse the illustrations are with a kiddo in a wheelchair and kiddos of all different colors, genders and sizes. I think this is a perfect book to help parents reinforce lessons of empathy, emotion recognition, and tolerance of others with acceptance of ourselves. This book has bright and vibrant illustrations, is well-made with thick pages, and also thoughtfully written for impressionable young minds. Great book!

Different can be wonderful!!!

As the mother of a “unique” little boy, this book touched my heart. There have been many occasions over his life where this book could have helped him. He has always struggled with his being different. To be honest, I have at times too. It hurts to see how little understanding about differences there is in the world. This book is an antidote and spirit lifting dose of different is okay. Even wonderful! Grateful to have it.

Cute book with a great message behind it!

This is a really great book for small pre-school and school aged children. It's cute, well made, and teaches them a great lesson, which is that everyone is different and unique and that we should be happy about/proud of our differences and embrace them. I personally love when childrens' books have a good message in them because their little brains are soaking up that information and knowledge. Now is the time to teach them these things, not when they hit teen- or adult-hood.

Precious book...

The Clarksons have become a great encouragement to me over the years through their books and I was thrilled to get to share one with my boys. They loved this one just as much as me. The illustrations are adorable and the story is precious. One of my most used phrases these days is "We're all different and that's okay." This book gives the same message and even ends with "Everyone's different, and that's okay. The Maker of everything made us that way." I like that wording so much better, so I may have to start quoting Nathan and Sally from now on. It's a lovely, hug-worthy book.

Beautiful book inside and out

I like there are books like this "Only You Can Be You". It preaches to kids being who they are instead of what everyone else is and embracing that. That is important because everyone is trying to sell you something and tell you who you should be to be accepted by them. I've always been a fan of you be you, and I will be me. And that is OK. Illustrations are big, bold, simple and accurate. Gave this book as a gift for a multicultural baby shower and they loved it. Great book for your kiddies shelf. Good starter book too although you may need to explain some stuff.

A book that all children can relate to.

A beautiful book with a sweet message for all kids. Children will be thrilled as they read through the book and find characteristics that they can relate to. The purpose of the book is for kids to understand that being different and unique is a good thing. The images include children of many ethnicities that will enhance the child’s reading experience as they see characters that are like them. The images are also fun and project a feeling of action and adventure. I highly recommend the book.

Excellent Children's Book with a much needed life lesson

This is really a great book to start reading to your kids at any age. I read it to mine before they go to bed and they absolutely love it. The images are great and they try to imitate what they see on the page but more importantly my almost 5 year old is starting to grasp that we are all different and that is okay because it is the way our maker made us. I can't recommend the book enough as it really teaches this very needed value of acceptance and respect of our differences

This book teaches about the meaning of words, synonyms, and antonyms

“Only You Can be You” is a clever educational tool with informative drawings that make children sensitive to the meaning of words, what are synonyms to words, and antonyms, and how to use them in sentences. There are three tasks in the book that enforce the lessons. For example: Tender shows gentleness and concern as in: Maybe you are tender and let yourself cry. The synonym is sensitive. The antonym is tough.

Help a child celebrate being different

In a world where children are often taught being different is not something to be proud of, this book celebrates our differences in a heartwarming and gentle way. Both my 4 and 6 year old loved this book, as did their Grandmother who first read it to them. As a teacher, I have been studying Social-Emotional Learning and feel this book fits nicely with the essential characteristics of self-awareness and social-awareness. Highly recommend for parents and teachers alike.

A Must Have For Every Library!

Every home and school library needs a copy of this wonderful book that celebrates the individual uniqueness of each child. The Illustrations are lively, colorful, and fun. Every child will relate, delight, and identify with the characters are artwork. The message in this book about every child being unique and needed is so healing and vital to our culture today. I am buying many of these to give away as this book will encourage so many people.

Beautiful book! Beautiful message!

I had the privilege of sampling this book. What a treasure this book would be for children to hear the truth that it is ok to be who the Maker created you to be! Being unique is a gift! In a world full of peer pressure to try to fit a certain mold, this book beautifully encourages youngsters to be proud of themselves just the way they are! Beautiful pictures and I'm sure they will spark conversation with your kiddos, too!

You are beautiful

Whether you are tall, small, brave, artistic loud, or quiet, it's ok. Maybe you are tough, tender, a builder, or a dreamer, but that makes you different, and that is ok. In a book that explores all the characteristics that make us unique, different, and special, this book shows that “only you can be you,” and that is a beautiful way to be.

Incredible message and illustration kids book

Great Rhyming book with good message

This is such a darling children’s book. It teaches kids it doesn’t matter if you’re short or tall, light skinned or dark skinned, shy or loud, outgoing or an introvert, “only you can be you!” The pictures are beautiful and the words on each page are concise and rhyme. A great book as well as gift idea- you can even write who it’s to/from on the inside page.

One of those books this world NEEDS

I ordered “Only You Can Be You” for my young son who has struggled with teasing and feelings of being different. He absolutely loves the book. It’s bright with cheerful illustrations and a beautiful message. It would be lovely for children with special needs or ones that just don’t feel comfortable in their own skin. I can’t recommend it enough!

Awesome Message

This is a beautifully illustrated kids’ book with such an important and timely message. My older child read it out loud to my toddler and I nearly got choked up listening to the encouraging words. I wish I’d had this book growing up. It teaches children to value themselves for the way they are, their personality and likes. Buy it for your kids!

Great Message and Illustrations!

This is a delightful book with both a great message and great illustrations. While the theme of "everyone is different and that's okay" is not new or unique--the way it is written and the illustrations really make this book stand out from other books with similar messages. The illustrations are adorable!

Great Message

Here's a book my daughter really enjoyed me reading to her. Loved how the book went into details on how everyone has a different personality and that ok. That's who we are and its ok to be different. Great book for any age group. Great Illustration drawings that kids can relate too.

Colorful and engaging book for preschoolers

This book is a hit with my grandson. The colorful illustrations and the rhyming text are engaging. The simple, but clear message is that God made us all different. Recommended for ages 1+. Note this is not a board book so the very little ones will need mom or dad to hold it so they don’t tear it up.

Wonderful book with a wonderful meaning

This is a wonderful book that celebrates that people are different and that not everyone wants or needs to be the same. It's a great meaning and the pictures are cute. It's a great way to encourage children to be themselves and not try to be someone else.
