Oahu Revealed: The Ultimate Guide to Honolulu, Waikiki & Beyond

I downloaded samples of a lot of Oahu books and I just liked the vibe of this one. It seems more honest than the rest (in terms of criticizing tourist traps and telling you tricks). I am a big Rick Steves Europe fan and this book had a similar style. We bought this one and downloaded some of the other (Lonely Planet, etc) and we liked this best and planned our trip around its ideas. PS We loved the Polynesian Cultural Center - we ended up making the hour drive twice. Waikiki sucks (crowded and chain restaurants only). The zoo is not good. Lanakai Beach was awesome.

This book covers the inception of the islands to the most recent events as it was was published in 2017. Its as though you uncovered the OAHU bible; like having a tour guide, travel agent, event planner and financial planner all in your back pocket. The most interesting fact is even though the "haiku stairs" has the most magnificent views of the Island, It is illegal. However, without breaking the law or running past security guards, you can actually legally hike to the top another route.. but you'll have to open page 212, once your book arrives in a day or two... The worst fact is that like all volcanic islands, eventually they will die and sink.. Meaning one day Hawaii will not exist. :(. But hey on the upside a new island is forming 20 miles off the coast and in 70,000 years or so will be blooming with tourism.....

This was an easy 5 star for me. I read the guide before leaving for Oahu and used it while we were there. There was a group of 5 all various ages of adults (18, 22, 25, 45 and 67). If we were on any part of the island I knew where we could eat. There wasn't one surprise from the time we were seated until the check was delivered, this guide was always on target. I think Seven Brothers was the greatest local experience. The customer service was excellent and when asked how we found them I got to give props to this guide. This was my third trip to Hawaii and I truly feel this was the best trip of them all because we had the island laid out for us so that we could choose the vacation experiences that best fit our group as a whole. We saw so much. My kids had not ever been to Hawaii and could not believe how much we packed into a 7 day vacation. There wasn't any time wasted driving from one end of the island to the other because we missed something. From dining to the best times to visit sights and attractions this is spot on. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is visiting Oahu for the first time or even returning. We purchased the Oahu Go card 3 day passes and saved a lot of money. Additionally, we used Google maps on our phones to navigate the island and didn't have any issues getting around. Thank you for this guide, it made our trip more successful than I ever thought possible!

Very fun guide to discover Oahu. We loved driving around the island and reading about the places as we passed or stopped by. The authors offered interesting/fun facts about places, making the ride more enjoyable. It felt like we were traveling with a friend that kept making snappy comments. Thanks to this book we discovered amazing places in the island, which are not visited by hordes of tourists. With this book there is no need to take a tour around the island, as this guide will give you all the information you need on getting to places.

The locals I spoke with called this the Blue Bible. It enhanced our vacation significantly. - Worked as a hiking guide, helping us pick levels of difficulty, beauty and distance - Helped us choose great restaurants, and what to order there - Didn't use it to choose where we stayed, but, accurate about that place - Really helped us choose beaches where my wife wouldn't encounter too much surf and I could swim or snorkle The only problem is that so many people use it that some recommended places are very crowded. Private waterfall pools get busy, trails are getting worn down and you have to time your visits off hours.

These books are a total must for your travels to any of the Hawaiian Islands. Used this book for our Honeymoon to Oahu and found everything to be pretty spot-on! This was a great use for planning our trip and then we cross referenced things with TripAdvisor reviews as well. For those of us that get minimal time off from work for a vacation - we have to do everything to make every minute of that time off count! This book made that possible for us!

I am taking my first trip to Oahu this Spring and this book has been invaluable. The writing style is so refreshing and the reviews have been extremely helpful in figuring out where to stay. I am really looking forward to the trip and this book has been able to get me 100% prepared for the trip. I would give this thing 10 stars if I could. It's so much more thought out than the other (Fodors, etc) guidebooks available.

Some of the businesses had closed. (So double check before you drive an hour out of your way.) Other than that, the book was pretty good. Maybe the authors could have a little less written swagger, but maybe that's what sells. :shrug: Oh, the haupia cream pie at that famous place really was good. The writers must not have very good food-related taste (and/or are a bit overly obsessed with breakfast).

A MUST HAVE FOR OAHU! We did not expect to enjoy Oahu as much as we did and we may not have found such interesting and fun destinations without this book!! Great suggestions and directions for all levels of daring. Very honest reviews about popular spots. Word of advice - when the book advises to arrive early to get parking - heed the warnings! Arrive at Hanauma Bay and Diamond Head before 9 or in the later afternoon to conquer the limited parking situation! We did not agree with the restaurant reviews, but we use Yelp! almost exclusively for restaurant reviews so this really wasn't an issue.

Excellent read. I had literally the best time ever in Oahu. Plenty of shopping, snorkeling, sightseeing, and water sports. Hanauma bay was so awesome. Turtle bay was also fun to snorkel in. Just be aware of your surroundings and ask questions. Stay in groups and you should be ok. The best advice in the book was don't get in over your head. Read the whole book. Most of the people are nice in Hawaii, but we did run into a druggie or two.

Just returned from O'ahu Hawaii and this guide was indispensable. It gives honest reviews of shows, dining, hotels, and more. It gives directions to some out-of-the way spectacular scenery. I also bought the companion app, and used it a lot to quickly hunt down things. There is a companion web site that they update with feedback from readers and from the app. I gave feedback on one restaurant via the app, and asked a question on the app via the app, and got responses within hours! There are several helpful maps of the different areas of O'ahu. The detailed map on Waikiki saved me about $30 on parking fees by highlighting where cheap parking is!

Don’t DARE to go to Oahu without this book!!! It MADE our vacation. Very accurate and helpful, to say the least. I’m writing from Lanikai beach where snorkeling is great- as Andrew said. We knew where to park and access the beach because of the book. And this is just once in a whole week of time we’ll spent because of Andrew’s work. Absolutely essential when planning the ultimate family vacation for 8 adults. TEN stars!

These are the best guide books for Hawaii. I have all 4. As someone who spends a lot of time on Maui figured I did not need these, but my brother had this book as bathroom reading and I was hooked. So much history and facts. Worth it even if your not a tourist!

I was so impressed by this book. He gives the reader so much information about Oahu. He reviews many of the hotels in Oahu and restaurants. The book covers a variety of things to see and do in specific detail with humor. As I was reading it I could eliminate activities I know are above my skill level. I now have a better idea of what I want to see and do asI prepare for my trip to Oahu.

Best investment I made for my trip to Oahu. My friends were all jealous of all the things I did while I was on the Island and i credit that to this book. Me and my wife carried the book in our backpack and each morning we looked into what we wanted to do with the guidance of this book. Our honeymoon was amazing and I'm grateful I took the 20 or so dollar plunge to have this guide with me. There are some restaurants listed who have either 1) had their name changed or 2) no longer exist. So there are a few updates needed in the book, but everything else is awesome!

This is an awesome book if you're planning a vacation to Oahu! The author gives detailed explanations of excursions, dining experiences & beaches. He adds tips of all kinds to help with the entire vacation. I really enjoy reading all he has to say and I'm excited for our trip! Such a great asset to our planning !

I purchased the guides for Oahu and Kauai. While OK for general travel, the descriptions of hikes are abysmal. The author seems to make every effort to obscure where hikes start, where they go, etc. He vastly overstates the difficulty of most of the trails that we hiked. I suspect that he actually hasn't hiked most of these trails, or else he has no experience whatsoever in providing hiking advice. I don't know if there are good hiking guidebooks for Hawaii, but these certainly don't qualify.

I have purchased from this author before and he leaves no stone unturned. This is the 4th book I have purchased from him and I have not been disappointed. I am planning a trip for 2018 and I am using his Island books to plan my trip. I am very pleased with this purchase and I will definitely buy from this seller again!

It's a gift so haven't read it myself but from flipping through , it looks like a perfect book for my friends upcoming trip to Hawaii! Big enough to be easy to read but not too big to carry on the plane to read on the way

New edition is just as great as the old ones, just the photos are more amazing, and everything is updated. This series has the only travel guides you will need for your Hawaii vacation. Great information, great pictures, and superb maps!

This book was an invaluable resource both for planning my O'ahu trip and for find spots while we were there. The advice on restaurants was spot on as were the recommendations for beaches and excursions. I would not have been able to find most of the places in this book on my own and because of that we had a wonderful experience.

I’ve never used a guide book before but this one was recommended highly and I know why! It helped us find things to do all over the island and by planning which ones were near others we made the best use of our time. So many great memories thanks to suggestions from this book!

Outstanding book about Oahu. I lived on the island for seven years and read this book for gouge on where to or not to go. Each time I visited another island I would pick one of these books up.....I have never been let down by them.

This book had a lot of great information regarding all types of activities on the island, but because the organization of the book was by activity type and not by location this made it extremely hard to go to a certain spot or to plan a day trip to several different locations and actually do all the great things the booked said to do.

Love this app! A short blurb provides information on places of interest. When a place of interest is selected, the app seamlessly integrates with Google Maps providing turn-by-turn directions. By clicking on the app's map, places of interest in the vicinity are identified. This is very helpful in organizing daily excursions and maximizing precious vacation time. Wish all the places we have visited had an app like this. Don't leave the guest house without it!

I found this book to be of minimal additional value compared to what I found online and through the Hawaii tourist website. Hawaii tourism will mail you very informative booklets.

family reunion trip to Oahu. The book is helpful, although not up to date. Didn't realize it was 4 years old when I bought it.

I think "Oahu Revealed" is the best guide book out there, and I've used them all. I was holding off this time only because the latest edition was 2015, but could n't wait any longer. It still met all my expectations and more!

Doughty's book on the Big Island of Hawaii was more helpful to us than this one, but then, we have been to Oahu several times and know it better. His style of writing makes his books very easy to read. I highly recommend him if you are traveling to Hawaii.

Put together well with a lot of maps an pull outs. Good directions and tips on getting around as the island sounds like a major city traffic jam. The only thing I didn't care for was most of the content seemed to be on Waikiki area of Honolulu and would be good if you were staying there. I am not and my area of interest was not represented very well, thus the 4 star rating.

Helpful to find the free stuff while in Hawaii... definitely purchase before you'd go.

We thought it was an excellent guide along with companion titles for Big Island and for Kauai. Definitely updated from the earlier ones our friends gave us so don't rely on an out of date edition. We loved the humor.

Entertaining and insightful - this book offered great insider tips while offering a fun perspective. I frankly could not put it down, and I plan to rely heavily on this book as I plan our once in a lifetime Hawaii adventure! I have bookmarked and highlighted so many things, and I'm looking forward to going back through each of them. The authors seem a bit too pleased with themselves and can't seem to stop telling the reader how impartial they are, which was a bit weird - other than that, it was exactly the type of advice I wanted.

Absolutely love these books! Used one for Kauai and currently testing Oahu and Maui. They are right on spot. I don't even want to read anything else about any of the HI islands. These book cover all and they are spot on! Recommending

Andrew Doughty gave fantastic insight and valuable information is his books titled Maui Revealed and Kauaui Revealed but he was restricted to certain revelations in this book. However, the book is still a helpful map and detailed reference to navigating through a vacation to the Hawaiian Islands. He shares so many awestruck hikes and lists all Oahu has to offer. This book is awesome for planning your Hawaiian adventure.

This book was very useful on our trip to Oahu. I read it beforehand and noted things we had never known about on our previous trips, so we were able to see and do new things on this trip. I highly recommend it.

Great guide - lots of information and easy to follow. Read it cover to cover and discovered as much of Oahu as possible in a week. Organized by events. They have a app you can download as well which corresponds to the book and can help you locate places easily based on GPS. More on the adventurous side which was great. Would definitely get other books from this author!

This book is a great guide to Oahu written by people who now live on the Island and know what the locals know. Their ratings are not for sale and you will get the real scoop on beaches, restaurants, activities and excellent recommendations of what to do and what to avoid.

This is worth its weight in gold. This book helped us in planing our 26th Wedding Anniversary trip to Hawaii in June of 2016. If you are going to any Hawaii Island get this book for your Island so you we not miss out on anything. Plan ahead and take an Island tour on your first days of your vacation so you can plan the other days from that point on.

We used this guide for our first trip to Hawaii. I must admit, it did the job. It opened the door for a ton of places to visit and nicely broke them down into different sections of the island. Thanks to this book, we spent very little time on the crowded and touristy Waikiki Beach. Instead, we frequented the other areas of Oahu for most of our visit. The only downside is that the book assumes most readers are staying in Honolulu. As a result, most of the maps and travel use Honolulu as the start point. It was most bothersome for us when trying to navigate to the North Shore. We managed to figure it out working in reverse but it wasnt at all intuitive and was confusing at times. The restaurant section is nice and detailed. Like other recommendations in the book, restaurants are broken down by areas. This book is much more descriptive and detailed than simply searching online for things to do. It was indespensible for us. The only advice I can give is to use common sense when using the guide. This is especially important if visiting some of the more isolated beaches or places like Sandy Beach that can be potentially dangerous to anyone not familiar with the conditions. Also, please respect the land and private property. Despite the requirement to watch a mandatory video and repeated warnings and pleas from lifeguards at Hanauma Bay, we still observed numerous adults trampling and standing on the coral. There are no private beaches in Hawaii. The only thing private are the lands that sit behind them. If you can reach a beach by land or sea without cutting through private property, you can swim it. The book advises this as well and says just enough to avoid any potential legal ramifications. However, we quickly learned that we had to exercise even more caution and common sense than suggested in the book.

Indispensable. Our bible while in Oahu. Gives you an insider's view bc author has lived there and knows what's what. Great guide if you want to go beyond touristy stuff. The app is great too bc it give you maps and extra info that's great to use on the fly once you are there.

Amazing comprehensive guide to sights, attractions, and things to do on Oahu. It was very helpful as it was our first visit, and it helped with planning excursions, costs, time to allow, etc. It came highly recommended to me and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Oahu, whether it be for the first of five hundredth time!

I am going to Oahu for 7 days and I have really enjoyed this book! It has excellent maps and honest reviews on several locations ! It has been such a great way to prepare before my trip and I will leave a product review after my trip as well! The product came in on time with my amazon prime and I have truly enjoyed this book!

My fiance and I went to Oahu and I tell you now this book was spot on. It was the perfect thing to read prior to the trip and gave us some really great ideas. It is true to how things really are and a great practical guide.

This guide, along with the map Amazon sells, has made my move to Oahu a joy. This guide is useful to a newcomer or visitor in figuring out what you want to see, what to expect and how to get there. There are good hints about parking, what beaches to save for weekdays, etc.

Very easy to use and well organized guide book with some excellent tips, recommendations, and maps. This was the only book I used for an 8 day stay on Oahu, and I managed to find and do everything I wanted. It's a great planning tool, highly recommend, and best to start reading through it early in planning stage.

The absolute must have when traveling or living in Hawaii to create a life changing experience!!! No app or website can come even close to this book in its richness, quality, detail, and, yes, occasional humor :)

I've read many guide books in my 10 years and I have to say that this one is the best travel guide I have ever read! This was my 4 trip to Oahu. Every other time we've stayed in the Waikiki area so I didn't really ever think to buy a travel guide. This time we decided to rent a house in the North Shore area. I'm really glad I had this book. I used it every day multiple times a day on our trip.There's a lot of details pretty much about everything to do and see. You ever heard of Giovanni's Shrimp truck? well in this book it gives you a fun little drama story about the current owner and the previous owners. I will not spoil it for you, but it's good drama! I also found a place called Fine Ass Chocolates in this guide, the name got me curious so we had to make a stop here on our trip! The chocolates are fantastic. Local shop, they only have one store and they sell their chocolates at a few local grocery stores. No way I would've ever stopped or even saw this place on my own. Its in the middle of no where and if you were driving past it on the highway you would've never stopped. But I'm glad we went, we were able to get a few gifts for people here and we also got chocolates for ourselves. The way that they lay out everything really helped in telling me how far things were from our house and which direction it was in. The house we stayed at was 4 blocks from Ted's Bakery so we used it as a starting point to pin point where the other places are from there. And by the way, if you're in the area Ted's bakery is a great spot for any meal! I will definitely be recommending this book to others and if I visit any of the other islands, I will be sure to get this series of travel guides. I read that these writers only do guides for the Hawaiian islands and that's how that can get such fine details about all of the places. Worth the money.

Great book! Very well written in a conversational, informal approach. Obviously, no book can have reviews on every single available activity, but I wish there was a review of the Keana Farms Zipline tour in North Shore. We booked this excursion sort of blindly, and we're hoping for the best. We are not experienced zipliners, so that would have been a helpful addition to the book. Aside from that, we are delighted with this book.

Like the rest of the series about Hawaii, this one is packed with interesting info. Many things I didn't know about and I've lived here for a few years.

Easy to read & find places or activities of interest whether it is your first or tenth trip to Oahu. This one replaced one that I had that was over 5 years old. I personally find this guide easier to use than Fodor's Guide to Oahu.

I’ve been using all of the Revealed books for years and then started using the apps. I never mind paying to the new update but my Oahu app has no update yet so I bought the ebook for my phone and iPad. Love all the info but got so use to the app that I find the ebook hard to use. Please continue to offer the apps.

Bought this Kindle book to learn about the island we are moving to. I feel like I have a very good handle on what life will be like here, as well as all of the things to see and do as well as places to avoid. Great book! Written with honesty and humor, it's an enjoyable read.

Always find hidden gems of activities and restaurants in the Revealed books. Hikes, secret spots, hidden beaches. These books are a must have to get the most out of your vacation in Hawaii.

As a new resident of Oahu I stumbled upon this outstanding guide book while looking for an Oahu hiking guide. (BTW, The Hiker's Guide to Oahu is a great resource to get into more details about trails, this book only covers highlights.) Unlike other guidebooks I have used in the past that were stuffy and convoluted this one is straight forward and amazingly helpful. The author is surprisingly candid in his reviews and has no problem calling a spade a spade. He also has a wry sense of humor that is interjected throughout the book making it more than just a guidebook, it is actually a fun read. I got the Kindle edition which is convenient because I can always have it with me but I think the paperback edition would have done me better service since I could have more easily bookmarked, highlighted, annotated, etc. Still, very satisfied with this guidebook!

This book and series of books on the Hawaiian Islands are all terrific. They show all the usual, easy to find favorites and help you find the secrets only the locals know about. Truly an exceptional resource for any visitor both regulars and first timers.

This is an OK travel book. We felt that the coverage of tourist attractions was inconsistent. For example, there is very little about Doris Dukes home, Shangri La and about the summer palace. We also felt that there is too much coverage of restaurants and hotels, which is a problem with almost all of the travel books. With the excellent hotel and reatauramt websites, there is no reason to include them.

This is the best book. Just got back from Oahu and it really helped !!!

This is a great guidebook in most respects but didn't mention anything about the Queen Emma Summer Palace, the University of Hawaii, the Hawaii Symphony and gave cursory treatment of the Honolulu Museum of Art, one of the best collections of Asian and Pacific art in the USA. Its focus seems to be on hiking lesser known trails.

A very helpful guide to get you around Oahu. A very dense and fact filled book. It would take a few days to get through this book.

This book has all the best places to visit in it, just don't leave it on the dashboard of your rental while you are out exploring or everyone passing by will know your a tourist!

This author has great guidebooks for each of the islands. He is obviously a local and knows the good beaches and local food joints. Well worth buying the guide book for the island you will be visiting.

If you've never been to Hawaii, the gudes by Andrew Doughty are well worth the cost. He tells it like it is and steers you away from bad deals. I've used the Maui Revealed book also and found things that most tourists never see. Absolutely the best!

Worth the price. Only disappointment was that it didn't really go into Condos for lodging. We're not really hotel people. Lot's of very good info though - the Blue Book is the standard in Hawaii.

I had an amazing time in Oahu with this little tour guide!! I was able to travel the island and discover things that yelp wouldn't have even recommended. What a great purchase. I will be sure to use his other apps for the other islands

Enjoyed all the additional background provided in the book. Not only did the book have an extremely entensive list of things to do, places to go, things to eat, and things you have to see. It also I really appreciated the extra insights the book provided. It was my first time to Hawaii but I felt so prepared and it felt like I had my own personal guide with me the whole time. Fun read and I laughed out loud several times.

This book is truly indispensable for anyone planning a trip to Oahu, whether for the first or fiftieth time. I would recommend not only using it to plan your trip, but be sure to take it along as well.

It has everything you need to plan your best Oahu vacation! He even tells you which tours are not worth the money. The book covers every aspect of tours, scuba diving, snorkeling, luaus, and especially for the budget conscious he includes the free things to see and do. It is well written!

Focuses a lot on dining options and lodging. Very candid which is refreshing. Driving directions are a nice addition, will see how accurate they are during our vacation this March.

The book constantly refers to their app, which you have to purchase separately. Seems like that would be way more cost effective and more helpful than the book. The Maui revealed book was more helpful.

I have literally been studying this book for our upcoming trip...it could be the holy grail of travel for those going to Oahu...we will know where to go and where not to from this book...highly recommend this book..on our return I will update on how helpful it was..for those who are skeptical...I have not been paid to write this review...for those of you who like to follow maps and not always rely on GPS. this could be the book for you...its just my personal opinion on this book

Best travel guide we've ever used. We have bought each of the "Revealed" series when we travel to Hawaii and each island is thoroughly covered within each book.

Want more than the tourist books give you? This is your answer. Used this one and the Hawaii one provided by our house rental agent. Had used the same brand 5 years ago. Loved it!

Another must read book before visiting! I've got many copies from the other islands and know their value! Honest reviews and excellent advice, easy to navigate book with great maps. I will, however, buy a paper copy to take with me before we head over.

We tried some of the recommended restaurants and they were either awful or very mediocre. I tried this book because reviews were so good. Fodors has been my go to in past trips to all kinds of destinations and we have had great experiences with their recs. I won't buy one of his books again. Fodors is more reliable.

We only use these travel books when we go to Hawaii. The best parts are probably the map. They're super detailed and easy to reference since they have notes or landmarks on them so that you can easily find your location. The narrative is entertaining and the reviews are completely honest and unbiased since they review everything anonymously. Some of the tips may not make sense until you're actually in Hawaii, but they're definitely helpful. Great pictures and background information as well. I find that I like reading the books before we go to help plan out what we're going to do or where to go, and then I download the app on my phone and use that more so while we're actually traveling about. The app has GPS, so it can locate you, even on hiking trails, and it will show you what attractions, food, or shops are nearby, which is more helpful than searching through the book.

This book and others in the "revealed" series have been our favorite source of information about the various hawaiian islands. The detailed information and maps are excellent.

Highly recommend this travel guide for your journey of Oahu. My family had many adventures off the beaten trail (and on the normal tourist path also) because of this book and its details.

The basic info is the same in every book. This guide does dive deeper into why and why not to do some activities and what is better. We found it very helpful and carried it with us most days.

Best tour guide book

We found the highlights and recommendations great. We loved the areas recommended that were outside of the standard tourist destination. In addition, loved the humor and levity on certain topics.
