Fun read!
As a back of the pack ultra runner, I have read many books about trail running, but most are from the most elite of elite runners. While inspiring, it is hard to connect on a deeper level with what those runners are experiencing. Cory does a great job sharing more of what it is like to be a mid pack runner and the day to day problems that come from running long distance. It was a really fun book to read.
Great leisure read
I enjoyed ready Cory’s advice and his experiences in running 100 mile races. I hope to do this and I felt he was honest and very humble in sharing his journey. I actually read it because someone gave it a bad review on social media and I have to say I enjoyed it.
Very nice book
A great book, some amusement, good advice and a look at a sport from a viewpoint most of us see, but don’t think about.
Somewhere near first on the list of my favorite running memoirs
What sets Cory's book apart from similar running memoirs is his ability to tell a story in a way that doesn't feel forced - it's like heading out for a run on the trails with a friend, just talking about life, running, and everything in between. Cory is so...relateable. Oh sure it's amazing reading the adventures of runners like Jurek or Dean or Roll, but it's hard to read a story about what it's like to be suffering while leading Western States or Badwater 135 and know what that feeling is like. But reading about being stuck on a trail at night, or jumping into a van to escape thunderstorms - I know what that feeling is like. Though I think that Cory would probably bristle at the term "elite," the fact is that he is an elite runner. You do not complete the Badwater 135 without being an elite runner. Yet it's an approachable kind of elite, even though that's a bit of an oxymoron. Cory's not writing about fueling his runs with chia seeds or listing off the powders and tinctures in a smoothie that would make the witches of MacBeth say "Whoa, you're putting that in there?" I gave his book to a running friend of mine, a guy who runs but hasn't ventured longer than a half marathon. He handed the book back to me the next day - after staying up late reading it - asking what trail races were happening soon. That's the effect of Nowhere Near First - it's a book that makes you want to go out and punch through a wall and then race a cheetah. But in a way that it actually seems like it could happen. Cory's writing style makes for a quick read, a verbal runner's high if you will, pages flipping along. It's an impressive debut, walking readers through his life and touching on some of the adventures along the way. It's a great gift for the runner (or wanna be runner) in your life.
Reminded me why I run...
Loved reading this book. As a runner, much like the title of this book, I'm Nowhere Near First in almost every case. I do find myself however at times taking it entirely too seriously. Sure I want to push myself to see what I'm capable of, but I want to enjoy it too. Cory's book reminded me to not lose sight of that side of things, to slow down and enjoy the smell of the orchards (near my house) when running in spring, to take a look at the amazing sunsets and sunrises I encounter when I've dragged myself out there early in the morning or after a hard day of work, and so on. Not only do I run to be physically healthy, but also to be mentally healthy and a more balanced person for myself, my kids, my job, my friends, my life. Cory helped me bring that perspective back ~ even though before reading the book I wouldn't have said I'd lost it. I had. I became a much more avid runner because of some major setbacks in life (although nothing like Cory's story), but it was so nice to be able to connect with Cory's story of using running to overcome our fears and limitations and to do things we'd never have dreamed ourselves capable of doing. I'm running my 8th marathon in a few weeks. I'd nearly stopped training for this one because it had gone so miserably this time around. I'm actually looking forward to it now ~ not because my race time will be anything special, but because I'm blessed to be able to do it at all. Thanks Cory for the reminder.
I can totally relate!
I can relate to many things in this book that very few people I know will ever understand. I really enjoyed sharing these common feelings in a sport that often does feel lonely. Many great laughs and I was even inspired to capture my first race jumping picture :-)
That is the best part of Cory’s story is that he is constantly ...
Two years ago I began running with the goal of a completing 1 mile. Fast forward to this year, I purchased Cory’s book prior to running my first ultra (50 miles). Nowhere Near First is hands down one of the most helpful pieces of reading I did while preparing. By sharing his stories he answered so many questions I had about training, race day preparation and what to expect mentally. I had read a lot of other books written by elite athletes and I had a hard time relating. That is the best part of Cory’s story is that he is constantly challenging himself, even when it’s hard. He also doesn’t sugar coat what it feels like to go through really long events and suffering. Suffering is part of the process and he embraces it. Every chapter is like its own story and it flows extremely well. If you start small, even with 1 mile, running an ultra can be possible. Cory’s book continues to inspire me to challenge myself to see what my limits are. I will continue to go back to his book as a reference as I train for my first international trail race and a 100K in 2018.
A must read for Runners
I just finished reading Nowhere Near First by Cory Reese and loved every page. I felt every emotion during his ultra adventures! He is funny and very relatable! I have laughed and snorted during lunch at work, I have gotten tears in my eyes during down time at work, and I have been inspired! As a runner, we all search for our limit and think we have found it only to have to go searching for it again! Running has brought me to highs/lows I have never thought possible and I have only began! I have only done one ultraMarathon but I know that there will be more! "Races take us to the deepest, darkest recesses of pain, loneliness, and despair. But as dark as those moments can become, there is an equal and opposite reaction of pride, satisfaction, and overwhelming happiness that comes after a race." Cory Reese
Perfect inspiration for my first ultra
I am currently training for my first 50K so I was looking for inspiration. My race is in less than a month so I am in no position to change training plan, so that was not the type of book I was looking for. I know 50k sounds like too little compared to what Cory has achieved, yet he makes it sound like it is something anyone who really wants it, could do it. I am amazed all the time at people who achieve these incredible distances, I feel like they devote all their time during the day to it but as Cory, I also have a job, I also have kids and family so it is relatable. I really like the way he says nothing is more important than time with family, sure, when we train we have to make sacrifices but not our family. I honestly haven't read that many books about running, even though I've been running for 6 years but this book was the perfect introduction for me and now I am looking forward to reading more about other runners.
Laughs, Tears, Smiles and More! Cory is the long lost friend we all wish we had.
A fabulously honest and real account of one's capacity to confront and overcome life's challenges, disappointments, and curveballs. The fact that Cory doesn't sugarcoat his adventures and tells it like it is, makes this an incredible read that is nearly impossible to put down. Most books on the market are from the amazing athletes and elite runners that are blessed with abilities in which the vast majority of us cannot fathom. Because of this, Cory's book makes it very relatable and motivating. You come away from this book with uncountable laughs, some tears, numerous smiles, and an overall feeling of happiness. The reader will naturally feel more motivated in their life because of Cory's willingness--through thick and thin--to find humor and positivity in tough moments and make it a priority to share it with those around him. Even if you have no desire to be an ultrarunner, this book is still a must read. I am eager to read whatever he writes next.

Great read.
We’ll written. Easy read. Nice description of the races and all the struggles that come with it. Thanks for sharing the details.
Fun!
Humorous and insightful account of the joy, lessons, adventures, social network, healthy advantages psychologically well as physiologically ultrarunning affords. This is not an egocentric "all about me" book but rather a universal tale about how by the commitment of effort and getting in this game, we can all reap the reward of happiness. That is, it's an earned achievement of doing something hard and extraordinary As an aging ultrarunner for over 33 years, I was very inspired by the theme s articulated by this book. What hit home the most for me, was the point that while there may be winners (as these events are races), but almost everyone involved is pulling for each participant in their own struggle of endurance to the last finisher and everyone in between. Also, along with all the adventures afforded by ultrarunning, I have found no better group of people to be with from all walks of life with the shared interest in doing something so positively wonderful in so many ways. This book reminded me of this.
The back of the pack is and odd place to be
why somenone would repeated and stubbornly choose to be in the last positions of a race you've trained for ages to go? This book is a remarkable good answer to that question and of course I'm writting this just for the pot of gold in the backyard. Nowadays I'd read it again
Fastest read ever...
I discovered this book from a tweet from a fellow ultra runner who described this as an awesome book. And simply put an awesome book. Corey paints an often funny account on why and how some people begin ultra running with its ups ands downs. Corey does a good job of describing this and relating it to runners and non-runners alike. The humorous and emotional accounts of running, from fatigue, feet, mosquitoes, etc. Also he pays attention to those around him on these runs. Also one note, he seems to prove a theory I hold about running - if you go out running others will follow, the simple act of doing. And as all great running books, this book does come equipped with some of Corey's success tips for those ultra runs. I am paying a great deal more attention to spreading the peanut butter. Again a great book and now in good company with other running titles. Also check out his columns in Ultrarunning Magazine.
Everywhere Near First!
I really loved this book as a marathoner and ultra marathoner, but here is the great thing: You don’t even need to be a runner to get something magical out of this book. It will be uplifting and funny no matter who you are or where you are on doing big things for purely intrinsic rewards!
An Ordinary Person Who Has Done Extraordinary Things - and writes well about them!
I have never run an ultramarathon, but I want to. Cory's book helps me realize that I can do this. He's a perfect example of a regular guy who DECIDED one day to run a marathon, then to run an ultramarathon, then to run more ultramarathons.... and he put in the time to get his body ready for these stressors. The mental strength was something he acquired (and continues to re-acquire) by actually running the races. This book is unique in that it's written by an ordinary person who has transformed himself into an extraordinary ultramarathoner (not because of his times/paces, but because of the sheer number of them he has run, and the frequency, and the difficulty of the races he chooses). The book gives me courage, helps me realize that anything is possible if I just DECIDE to make it so, and it's also entertaining because of Cory's storytelling ability and sense of humor.
Everywhere near perfect read!!
I was intrigued by this book because I know Cory personally, and have been a big fan of his amazing wit and his writing through his blog. I'm not a runner--in fact, like Cory, I get inspired to run the St. George Marathin every year as I see the sea of runners on the course every first Saturday of October. Unlike Cory, my feelings of "I want to do this" last about 30 minutes, and then I gain my sanity again. But, even as a non-runner, Cory's viewpoint of life, his great perspective, his vulnerability, genuineness, his quirky humor, and yes, the dreaded cat unitard, had me hooked from the first chapter. I learned things about my friend and neighbor I did not know. My fondness and respect have grown. This is not a book about running as much as it is a book of life lessons. It is an inspiration and well worth every moment. Bravo!
Great inspirational book on running and accomplishing something you didn’t think you could
I just finished reading Nowhere Near First. I saw it in the recommendations after I purchased Running to Leadville. I love to run but am not near an elite runner. I have run 3 marathons and 5 half marathons. I live to run! It was refreshing to read a book about a runner who isn’t the fastest but lives to run. Don’t get me wrong, what Corey does it impressive!! I am in awe of his running accomplishments, and a bit jealous! I feel I can now push myself beyond the marathon distance and have the guts to try an ultra marathon. Lastly, I lost my Dad last year. It was touching to hear Corey’s account if his Dad and it made me think of my Dad as well. I think of him often while I’m running alone as does Corey. Thank you for a wonderful book!
Happy Blend
Cory Reese has a sublime ability to translate unspeakable needs into joy of living. Not everyone who reads this book will be inspired to become an ultra runner, but some might. I would say to anyone skeptical of reading this because of the unique subject matter, that the narrative leaves that concern in the dust. Cory Reese takes the unique personal drives and motivations that makes us endeavour to achieve in life, and threads the needle. He will pull you into ultra running in the best possible way.
Great book
Great book Worth the money!!
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want to go outside and run. For real.
Truly my favorite book ever. I have read Nowhere Near First countless times, and will download the audio book to listen to during long races. It makes me howl with laughter, sad at times, and always makes me want to get out and run. I made the leap from half-marathons to Ultra Marathons after reading this book, because Cory convinced me that I, too, could do it. I ran the Across The Years 48 hour race last year (and will again this year) solely because Cory made it sound so amazing. And it didn't disappoint. Cory is humble, self-deprecating, kind, insightful, and inspirational. I wish I lived closer so his awesomeness could rub off on me. Whether you run or not, Nowhere Near First is a worthy read.
Inspiring and laugh out loud funny!
Great read not only about running but perseverance when running and life get tough. Funny and heartfelt. Love the cat suit.
Funny book about the ups and downs of running
Just started reading this book and it definitely is a fun read for any runner. I like how I can relate to so many of the things in the book because I also am not in the front of the pack of runners......so it's nice to read a book from someone's perspective that is the same as mine and who enjoys everything that running has to offer even if they aren't in first place. The book does read like he complied his blog and then put it in book form but it isn't the first book I've read like that and I still enjoy the stories. A bonus is the pictures at the start of the chapters, I always like to see pictures from races/training/whatever because they always show what the runner was going through.
The book you're looking for if you want to be inspired.
I've read this book and I'm halfway through Cory's second book, Into the Furnace, and I can't recommend them enough. The stories that Cory tells are completely relatable to any and everyone. Even a non-runner would enjoy this book. And if you are a runner you will love it. My wife, best friend and another co-worker have read this book after telling them about it. It may even inspire you to do something you may have never thought of doing, like running a loop marathon, like I'll be doing this weekend.
Funny, relatable, inspirational...
Nowhere Near First may be where Cory finds himself at many races, but his book makes the podium in my mind. Filled with inspirational stories, he writes in a manner that makes him easy to relate to as a runner. His perseverance through life and running and the way he tells his story fills the readers imagination as if they could run along side "fast Cory" fueling oh Hostess snacks and sugary donuts. Nowhere Near First is honest, funny and real all at the same time.
Good read, but missing pages.
Really enjoyed reading this book. If you're someone who likes reading about others race experiences, then you'll also enjoy this book. However...I can't give 5 stars because my book is missing pages! They aren't ripped out- they were never there. A little annoying, but seeing as it only happened once, not completely awful..and not worth the trouble of sending it back.
Inspiring!!
Cory is incredibly relatable. I've only run two ultras thus far but I can totally relate to his words and I know now that I can do more and go farther! He is a great story teller and a huge inspiration.
Something for everyone
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and I am heading straight for the author's next book. It was hilarious and touching and encouraging to me as a just okay runner.Loved it!
A hilarious lesson in embracing and overcoming suffering
Nowhere Near First helped me muster up the courage to tell myself, “It’s entirely possible for me, too, to run a 100-Mile ultramarthon some day.” Cory’s many stories of hard work and time management (and humor!) have already helped me improve my own training for the 50-miles I hope to finish during a 24-hour endurance challenge I have in a few months. Cory tells us of the mental toughness and perseverance he kept in order to achieve his goals, and this has inspired and motivated me to once again fall in love with running the way I used to. If you’re the least bit interested in running, or need a lesson in embracing and overcoming suffering, this book is for you.
Great book
If you are into running this is the book for you. The author has a funny and whimsical way of relating to all of us slow runners. Just what I needed to get me out the door again
Great inspiring book . I recommend this to anyone who loves running . I choose this rating because Cory is a normal guy like me.
I am looking forward to my friends reading this book . So we can review and talk about it. Cory is like me somewhere near the back of the pack.
Clever, Funny, and Inspiring
This book was so inspiring for me! It made me want to get out there and try different types of races and not be afraid about where I finish... While I was running a trail half marathon, I just kept thinking of things from the book like the chapter about the three not so wise men... That made me careful not to start out too fast and to conserve that energy for later in the race. Cory's style of writing makes it so easy to pick up the book and not want to put it down! And his stories are so funny and inspiring. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves running!!! I'm looking forward to reading it again!!!
Cory Reese is my spirit animal
Loved this book! After meeting Cory and running some of the same races, I decided I needed to see what all the hype was about. Turns out, I started running ultras for the exact same reasons: the fun, the food, and the scenery. This book has kept me inspired while recovering from an injury and bolstered my confidence to sign up for a 50miler next year!
It’s a good read!
Really enjoyed this! I’m a runner that’s slowly building up to try a marathon and then ultimately an ultra — to dare mighty things, indeed! Thanks Theodore, and thank you Cory!
Finally!
I have read too many running books that read as if we are all elite runners. It is nice to have one written by a non-elite. However, like nearly every book on the subject, this doesn't include any female-specific info. I know when it's a male writer, they write what they know. However, i would like books in this genre to either acknowledge that they are not addressing any female specific information or else include some. Or make the title clear that it is specifically for men. Instead, it's just left out. A man would likely not notice the omission.
Humor and wisdom from the trail to run better and cope with suffering -- in ultras and in life
I've read many books about running in general and ultrarunning in particular. Cory's is absolutely worth your time, regardless of your experience in the sport -- rookies will learn a lot, while seasoned ultrarunners will nod and laugh in recognition of the scenes. He write and runs from the heart, and finds humor and humanity in very tough situations. This is a book about suffering -- but it's also incredibly funny. At a time when this sport is growing increasingly serious, competitive and impersonal, I'm grateful for Cory's personal, humble, irreverent personality in the sport. He reminds us to run (and jump) with joy, to nurture relationships and to never take life for granted.
I laughed, I cried, I bonded and I was inspired, Cory is my kind of people..
I have both the physical book and listen to a the audio book at work. Inspirational and a great stories. It gave me that little push I needed to help complete my first 100miler last year @ JJ100. Thanks Cory. Do not forget to pick up his other book Into the Furnace.... I look forward to more tales and hope to run into Cory on the trails one day...with my new hat.
This is the BOOK for the love of running!
If you love running or try to understand people who love runnning is this the book for you. I have read a lot of books of people who have gone from unfit to super athletes in no time, except the fact that most of them forgot to tell you that they where superfit when they where younger. For the first time do I feel that it's really about an average joe that discover how amazing your body is and what you actually can achieve if you just dig deep and keep moving forward regardless how slow it goes. I strongly recommend this for all of you who loves or wants to fall in love with running.
a good read for anyone who runs
I enjoyed the book. The one-liners kind of made me roll my eyes sometimes, but the author's genuine love for the sport and what it has done for both him & his family is apparent. I have limited trail running experience, but this book did inspire me to look into some trails in southern Utah! The overall message is that you CAN run ultra distances & you CAN achieve big goals. Worth the read.
My favorite running book
My favorite running book. I enjoyed all of the stories, humor, and hearing from someone who embraces not being first or fast, but rather, just finishing. This has also been my perspective on how I run for years and I found it so refreshing to read about someone who says it is okay not to always be the best. The goal is to have fun. I also appreciate how he makes the effort to minimize impact on family, something I am also familiar with. I would recommend this book to everyone, whether you run 5Ks, ultras, or don't run at all.
Perseverance with Humor
This book was a great read and a page turner. Cory has run multiple 100 mile races, usually not fast, but determined to the end. He is also a committed family man to his wife and children while holding down a full-time job. Cory’s balance of life is a true testament to overcoming obstacles and teaching all of us valuable lessons that we can accomplish anything.
Fun read with valuable information
I read this book because I heard it was humorous with insight into the world of ultra running. I enjoyed this book as a non runner.
Be on the lookout for the man in the cat suit.
I enjoyed this book. I was immediately attracted to the title because I have never been first. Actually, I was dead last in my first and only (so far) ultra. Anyway, the book did not disappoint. Cory tells some great tales from the trails that all runners can relate to even if you only like 5Ks. He shares his triumphs and his mistakes. Cory Reese, if you see this, I'm glad you shared your runner's heart with us. If I ever make it to Utah to run an ultra, I'll be on the lookout for a guy in a cat suit.
Light, lively,and engaging
I read this book while sitting out by my fishpond on a gorgeous day. It was a quick, enjoyable read, full of great information and witty, comical recounts of so many adventures. If you are an ultrarunner, you will find immense respect for what Cory has done even if you can't quite grasp the full extent of his feats.. If you are NOT an ultrarunner, you will still have immense respect for what he does, even if you can't quite grasp the full extent of his feats. :) Highly recommend, especially if you are wanting some motivation and inspiration!
Fun, lighthearted, and inspiring read
I absolutely loved Nowhere Near First and already have two friends lined up to lend it out to. I have never run an ultra, but Cory’s story telling inspires me to set goals that fit me and my running ambitions regardless of how Id measure up to everyone else. I am not a competitive person so I love how he hits home on enjoying the ride and how that don’t have to be at the front of the pack. I would 100% recommend this book to any down to earth runner looking for an inspiring easy read.
This author relates to us runners at the middle and pack of the pack
One of the few books on running where the average runner can relate to the author. Although Cory is by no means what I consider a slow runner, he shares the struggles that most of us mere mortals commonly encounter. His humor and honesty kept me totally engaged. If you have ran ultras in the past, he will validate your highs and lows. If you have never crossed the line over a 10K, he will let you know what to expect as you move up the distances. Great read for all levels.
A fun collection of stories about 100 mile runs
When I read any George Sheehan book I probably highlight 50 or more passages. I highlighted maybe 5 passages in this book. Still, those 5 insights were helpful to me as a runner. This isn't a George Sheehan kind of book. It is a collection of stories about running 100 mile races, or on some occasions, 100 miles "just for fun." Really incredible. The author is totally unassuming about his accomplishments as an ultra runner. He seems like a really great guy.
wow
As someone who only understands winning or failing, I loved this book. It has given me a glimpse at what it is like to enjoy the ride and that enjoying the ride is what it is actually about. I have found myself remembering Cory's words of wisdom when I am out on a run and in a low patch, it helps me to keep going and helps to remind me of why I am running. Loved the book. Well worth reading.
Such a fun book!
This book was sooo much fun to read!!! I smiled through the whole thing!
Personable and entertaining book for us "average" runners
Loved this book. Cory comes across as personable, funny, and a normal guy who has been able to accomplish extraordinary things through dedication, perseverance, stubbornness, and a good attitude. I am also a runner who will always be "Nowhere Near First" and it was very refreshing to read a book from someone who loves to run in spite of this. The book reads like a casual conversation amongst friends. Highly recommend for runners of all distances but especially those who dream of running long, but may not yet have had the courage or opportunity. Thanks for the good read Fast Cory!
Amazing
Man he is funny and so inspiring. I dont know if I will ever be able to run a hundred miler but I feel inspired to at least try at some point in my life. First up another marathon or two and then a 50k. Who knows maybe someday I will be on course with Cory Reese and see him in action. Tell you one thing I am for sure a back of the packer and am going to embrace my place there!
So you think you can run an ultra...
What a book! Cory has overcome so much from childhood to adulthood and has done it with grace and humor. His crazy solo ultra running adventures just amaze me. He is such a real down to earth person and has made me jump into the ultra running world. For that I don’t know whether to thank him or hunt him down. Lol
Thank you for the opportunity for letting us into your wonderful world and giving us beginners a reason to keep ...
Absolutely incredible inspiring running book you'll ever read. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never want to give up on your dreams. Thank you for the opportunity for letting us into your wonderful world and giving us beginners a reason to keep on going when the going gets tough, when we are without our parent that we have lost and learn to lean on a higher power for our strength during the 100 mile runs. I hope to get my copy signed someday. :) Thank you again.
Hilarious, Heartfelt, Inspiring
Having run countless 5ks, 10ks, and half marathons, I consider myself a distance runner. However, ultramarathoners are a different breed altogether, with grit and determination that is truly mind boggling. Cory Reese pulls off a literary feat just as impressive as his athletic ones: making the reader feel like an ultramarathoner, right there beside him. What otherwise might be an unthinkable task suddenly becomes relatable, told with warmth and wit. Whether you're an ultramarathoner or have never run a step, Nowhere Near First is a book that can speak to anyone about tenacity, friendship, and family.
Awesome read!
Highly recommend you read this if you are an ultra runner. Great advice and words of wisdom from Cory's experience.
Loved this book!!
I am planning in running my first trail ultramarathon this Fall and this book has been a great motivation! Cory is an excellent writer (read the book in 2 days!) and he does a great job of describing the highs and lows of doing very challenging runs. Not everyone is an elite runner, nor signs up for races to win. For a lot of us, it is about the experience and the personal lessons learned during the journey. Loved this book!
Great Book of True Tales from the Running Trails and Life
Nowhere Near First is a fantastic running book written by an ordinary family man who accomplishes very extraordinary feats on his feet. Cory's race recaps and stories about his life, family and running are humorous and inspiring. And though it is not a training book, I did pick up some great running ideas such a running solo 100 milers (50 milers, perhaps, in my case) in it. Cory shows us that there is fun to be had no matter what we are going through and that we all ought to take the time to enjoy our journeys.
Hyperbole and awesomeness
I just started running a couple of weeks ago. It's been harder mentally and emotionally than physically. Having this book to listen to on my runs has been wonderful. It's kept me going with positivity, kindness, honesty, and humor. Cory's openness about his journey becoming a runner and his adventures on ultras is refreshing and endearing. Please read this book. The audiobook is also fantastic and worth it's weight in megabytes. Just buy it. You won't regret it.
Great read
I really enjoyed all his stories, especially because it made me feel better about myself as a “slow” runner. Encouraging to say the least to keep reaching for my running goals.
like other running books I've read
"Running is a gift. We are blessed to be able to do this. So whether you make it three miles or eighty-nine, we are so blessed to even be out on the trail." This book, like other running books I've read, isn't just about running but about life. Facing challenges head on, and racing against yourself rather than anyone else. The setup is basically Cory Reese telling a story about an ultramarathon in each chapter. The writing style is as if you're chatting with him at a cafe. Well worth the easy read.
Excellent read
I really enjoyed this book, I am also a runner who is nowhere near first and it was wonderful reading about amazing achievements by a regular person
Cory has a fun style about his book that makes you feel like ...
As a back of the pack runner I appreciate that Cory makes it real. He gives voice to my frustrations, demons, doubts, fears and scoldings and then lets me know it is okay. Even back there we have value and we add. Cory has a fun style about his book that makes you feel like he is talking to you while out on a run together. There is lessons in every chapter. I especially gain value from the lessons on mental training. New to trail running or an old hand, this is a fabulous read.
Inspirational
Inspirational, funny, touching, educational all rolled into one beautiful cinnamon roll of a book. Very well written. I've sworn off running. I hate it! After reading this book im not so sure. Do I hate running, or do I hate comparing myself to other runners? Maybe I should just have some fun. Thanks Cory, truly.
Fast and fun....and inspiring!
Word of warning: long distance trail running is my hobby - I was predisposed to find it enjoyable. Cory Reese has a light and humorous writing style and a knack for identifying what makes a particular race special. He seems good example of many runners I have met: humble, generous and dedicated. This book has tragic parts - but is in general it is an upbeat account of someone living life to the fullest. I was inspired enough by Cory Reese's description of the Zion 100 that I have registered for the race!
Highly recommended for anyone interested in ultra trail running
Interesting stories about various trail run experience. Highly recommended for anyone interested in ultra trail running. That said, the book may have limited audience and limited appeal to the general readers. I particularly like the story about the incredible support from the running community in the author's first solo 100 miler. The story about Grand Canyon R2R2R is also fantastic, making me want to put that on my bucket list.
Honest and funny!
As a wannabe ultrarunner i truly enjoyed the often times funny descriptions of the authors adventures in ultrarunning. I am left with no doubt that it will be hard. That it will be fun. That i will find friends. That im probably crazy....thanks for the inspiration!
Time to go and do it!
Liked the clean crisp writing style. Liked the subjects; even the TMI ones which while cringe-worthy, were placed just so, to either comic effect or as sharp reminders. As sad & somber as the side-topic is, Cory Reese wrote about it in a way that comforts those of us who have had similar experiences.
with little short stories woven together - my favorite style of book
I have been waiting to read this book when I had time to sit and focus. And I have been entranced, thrilled, moved, and utterly heartened by this book. The pace is quick, with little short stories woven together - my favorite style of book. And, Cory makes real every little detail of the joy, agony, and effervescent life that happens in running. Thank you for the motivation to pursue ultrarunning again. I wish to jump, to live my life fully.
My running life
I give this book a 5 star. I enjoy that Cory gives a realistic (somewhat) view of what ultra runners experience. I started running ultras in my 40s after being a marathon man. 20 Boston finishes. I have never run more than 24 hrs. Many 100 milers and few trail ultra favorite Old Dominion.. Now at age 70 and unable to run at all...it's fun to relive those experiences. They were God given.
I really loved this book
I have met Cory a few times and talked with him a little bit. I really loved this book. I tried my 1st 100 last year and read it shortly after that. I wish I had read it before! So much good advice and heart felt experiences from him and I could so relate. He is an awesome person and this book was so entertaining to read. I would recommend it for the hard core runner and non runner alike. My 9 year nephew read it and enjoyed it too!
Fantastic read, couldn’t put it down
It was so refreshing to read a story from a ‘back of the pack’ runner, which most of us actually are. There is no way that I’ll be winning any races or setting an records, but it gives you inspiration to read that others are just like myself but are out there running and enjoying themselves regardless. This was a fantastic read and I found it hard to put down. Highly recommended for anybody with an interest in distance running.
Great for Book Groups of Runners and Non-Runners alike.
As a non-runner, I was not too sure about this book having much for me. I read it for book group, and was very pleasantly surprised. The story was very personal, full of humor and amusing details. It was definitely not a how-to book on running ultramarathon, but a memoir of an inspiring athlete. I almost wanted to run more after reading it just to hang out with all of the people in the book. I definitely recommend it. Our book group enjoyed discussing it.
Uplifting Read
Fun, uplifting read that makes me want to get out and run.
Great story. Fabulous dude
Cory’s story is charming and fascinating even though it’s a story about running at the back of the pack. His story inspires me to want to find out just how tenacious I can be when a long run starts to get arduous. I must learn the art of endurance just as he puts it. This is a captivating story not just about endurance but love, gratitude and humility
I’m at the back of the pack
I loved Corey’s humor in his situations. A lot of us think it but don’t say it. I can totally relate to not being fast but wanting to try new adventures and motivate others. Thank you for sharing your life’s struggles and your success. Looking forward to more stories.
As a back-of-the-packer myself, Cory's insight and humor struck a chord and I am grateful for that.
It's a dive into the heart and mind of an ultrarunner that will leave you inspired to do a little better, and be a little better.
funny and full of both the joy running brings to ...
Very enjoyable book, funny and full of both the joy running brings to runners and the experiences we find ourselves in at times. The writer Cory would be a perfect training partner! This book beyond an enjoyable reading experience helped me look deeper at my own running and my own story. Like all good books it ended far too quickly - keep writing Cory.
Great read!
A great, read! Funny and encouraging. I can relate to so much (except running an ultra-I have yet to do my first). The living life to the fullest, choosing suffering, and love of running. My inspiration to get me to my first ultra!
Inspring and insightful!
You don’t need to be an ultra runner to relate to Cory’s stories. Full of humor and an easy read.
Great read, entertaining and funny!
Cory's book was a reminder of why I love to run. It's not all about PR's. It's about the experiences, the people we meet, and what we take away from our experiences. We can't all be elite runners, but we can still have fun and learn about ourselves in the process! Cory's writing kept me giggling, but under that, I'm pretty much in awe of his determination and perseverance. I mean, Badwater finisher! Incredible. Thanks for putting your experiences out for us to share.
Balanced honesty, inspiration and storytelling!
This is a great read for runners trying to explain why they run to their families! Well written - one story flows to the next and all ties together.
Inspirational! Excellent read!
Loved this book! A fast, easy, great read! Cory tells the stories of his ultramarathons very easily and naturally. Having a son who is a marathoner, and having seen a couple of his races, my respect for runners is immense. I'm going to recommend this book to him. Cory has written a very inspiring book!
A good read for runners, especially us back of the packers
Motivating story by just a regular guy. Makes me think I can do it too, and I will, even though I'm a lot older than him. He shares his joy of running, which is far more important than what place he finishes. He puts into words what I often feel. Thanks, Cory, and don't stop.
Hilarious and Inspirational!
I just finished the book and I highly recommend it for anyone who is an ultrarunner or considering it! The book is full of hilarious anecdotes about his ultra adventures and is laugh out loud funny while simultaneously inspirational and touching. It made me realize that mere mortals are able to conquer these incredible distances with grit, determination, hard work, and importantly, lots of humor (self deprecating humor especially)! I loved the book.
Corey has a true passion for making others smile
Even though this book is about Corey and his navigation of life and experiences in running, it is very apparent that he is a guy with a huge heart, nonstop sense of humor, and a genuine passion for helping others push past their perceived emotional and physical limitations. Fun book to read, and pretty amazing some of the things he has been able to accomplish, if by nothing else, sheer will power!
I ran through this book faster than my legs could carry me!
If you enjoy reading, running, and travel literature then you too will soon be endorsing this book. The struggles and ultimate victories of the author are testimony to his character, and his way with words makes it easy to imagine entering the long dark tunnel of ultra-running. Only by his words do we come out the other side.
Entertaining read
Many good stories about Tha "average" ultrarunner , as if anyone who routinely runs 100 miles is "average!". Cory tries to capture the pain and perseverance it takes to do this. He comes close a number of times. Occasionally the writing is a little simplistic, but overall I would recommend it.
Throughly entertaining and fun
Easily one of the funnest reads in quite a while. Witty, honest and transparent. Corey is very unapologetic about being mediocre, but dedicated. I found it inspiring. As a slow old dude, this book gave me hope to never stop reaching. Highly recommend it for a fun read.
interesting but a bit limited
I read ultrarunning books for motivation as I go farther in my training. Generally it works well. There is some demotivation in this one. The author gives us details about race day issues to avoid, and some other practical knowledge. His bragging about how nerdy he is can get a little tedious, and his frequent remarks about how much pain he is in makes a case for avoidance of the whole thing. However, his determination is impressive and a common theme among back-of-the-packers and elites alike. I would recommend other books before this one, but I'm glad I read it.
A fun read
A fun and engaging account of one man’s struggle with life as seen through his unlikely addiction to ultramarathons. At times silly, serious, introspective or humble, the author’s style is very down to earth and paints vibrant pictures not only of the struggles of racing, but of being a father, husband, son, and man.
Cory is Genuine, Funny, and Inspiring
Ultimately, this is a book about ultra running. What I took away was so much more about life. Kindness, patience, perseverance, and love are the themes I'll never forget. Thank you for sharing your story, Cory!
Amazing read, great storytelling!
Cory’s writing makes you feel as though you’re right there with him. He makes the journey of an ultramarathon fun (even if it is extremely difficult) and gives hope to all who seek to achieve them.
I loved spending time virtually running and eating Twinkies with Cory!
I'm a DFL runner who is always at the very back of the pack! Cory has lowered the bar that's made most of us not want to race in public. He's pretty slow and funny and charming and silly and entertaining and motivational. Loved it. Didn't want it to end, either.
This book is the best especially if you run at the back of the pack
Loved it so much!! I’m also back of the pack ultramarathoner and it’s so nice to here race reports and stories from someone that runs the races in the slow lane. Keep it up Corey!!!
Feel Good Memoir
This was a great memoir by someone that isn't inherently talented or elite. These are the kinds of people that most of us can learn from. The people like us, going through struggles like us and achieving things we really want to achieve. I've read countless "how to" books by experts. We need more books like this. Inspirational. Interesting. Relate-able. This memoir has it all.
Great book written from the heart
Really enjoyed this book, it is about more than running. It discusses the difficult issues that are often not mentioned. Cory is a writer who wears his heart on his sleeve and the book is awesome because of his honesty in his writing. And dirty Doctor Pepper sounds awesome will definitely be trying that !!!
Inspirational and Aspirational
Cory Reese is a kind and generous member of our running community and his personality and persistence shine through every page of this book. For ultrarunners, particularly those of us in the back of the pack, this is an inspirational must-read. For everyone else, I promise you will find something to love about these running tales and you may find yourself wanting to line up for a long run, too!
Inspiring
This book has inspired me to push my limits. I've completed marathons before but I have never pushed beyond the 26.2 miles. After reading Cory's story, I have decided to go farther. It's great to read about someone who has accomplished so many amazing things. It's even greater to know that he is not much different than me. I loved every word of this book.
Absolutely Loved This book!!!!!
It's not often I find a book that can make me laugh out loud. Great insights into running and a great read. I also bought a copy for both of my daughters.
Inspirational!
I am a 54 year old mother of two grown(it) daughters... began running not quite 12 weeks ago...striving to run a 55 (miler) by 55! just finished Cory's book last night...Wow... what an inspiration!... Love this guy, as a runner, dad, husband and fellow Hostess lover( great thing about running, is you can eat twinkles!) Great stories and lots of motivation... passing this on to anyone (even) thinking of running...
A Jumping Good Time
Just re-read this book, it holds up over the years. Cory makes things relatable via his humility and a great sense of humor. If you think you can't run, or can't run a (fill in the blank distance) read this book. Cory puts a humorous spin on what it means to be a runner. He is one of my Ultra-running inspirations.
Inspiring stories
I am training for my first ultramarathon (50k only), but wanted some inspiration to get through the long runs. Cory is a regular, goofy guy that became addicted to the experience of running ultras and the sense of accomplishment and reward finishing them. I'd recommend to anyone looking for an easy read and inspiring story
Amazingly Funny!
This book is well written and every story is truly different. What I like most about this book is it had me laughing so hard, that I couldn't put it down. All of us ultra runners can relate to these stories, so order this one book now!
Enjoyable quick read...takes less time than 100 mile run
Well told stories filled with humor. Inspirational to all runners. You will walk away hungry after all the talk of food.
Encouraging
As a runner who is never at the front of the pack, this book was a fun look into ultra marathoning. Encouraging to all of us that as individuals we can accomplish more than we think we're capable of.
Inspirational, funny and thoughtful
I loved this book. I have already posted loads of quotes from it. I feel inspired, not only to run long races, but to do crazy things. Like running a marathon before breakfast. Or do my own marathon just before another. (Quadruple might have to wait.) Read this!
It shows the real sides of running.
This book helped me to see the real side of racing. It’s not always finishing a race in the best of mood, but we have bad days sometimes.
Wow.
I love that he exclusively made this about his running and it didnt have diet stuff. What he does is so incredible and unfathomable to me as a slow, still fledgling ultrarunner. I know that I will be thinking about him when I'm in the dark times.
Must read if you need a smile and appreciate the Care Bears!!
Cory is an inspirational figure in the Ultra Running community and has taken the courageous act of sharing his life with us the reader. He does a great job of capturing the ups and downs of what it means to truly challenge yourself. A must read if you need an opportunity to laugh and cry (and honestly who doesn't need that?). Thank you Cory for sharing your journey.....
Great read
Cory seems to be a genuinely good dude. He captures what it means to complete ultra distances whether doing an organized race or solo run. His explanation of the mental aspects of running are spot on.
Great read, if you can look past the editing
Wonderful book. Inspiring, humbling, entertaining. So, so many editing mistakes/typos... but still very enjoyable. Highly recommend. If you are a runner, read it... and then go for a run!
Great read to motivate
Cory writes for all of us who know what it's like to pay for a.race. we aren't professionals or sponsored but still enjoy pushing ourselves to the limit. After reading this book, you will be motivated to sign up for those races you had doubt about. Get out there and do it. Thanks Cory for the stories and the passion. See you on the trails!
A great book for any runner
A great book for any runner, and non-runner. Motivating, inspiring, and raw with true human emotion, this book is a must read for anyone who has ever thought about going further than marathon distance. Cory is not a super elite athlete, but proves that anything can be accomplished when you put 1 foot in front of the other and refuse to quit/give up.
Awesome!
I absolutely loved this book! Probably the most relatable book I've read in awhile. Cory is definitely humble and there was no part (as in other books) where I felt like he was pretentious or pushing some kind of hidden agenda.
Such a fun and positive read!
I loved reading this book! I found Cory’s perspectives on both life and running to be sincere and inspiring. Highly recommended, even if you never run a race in your life! (But it has some good basic advice for those who do!)
Love love this book!
One of the best books I've read in a long time. I'm new to running and this book has been a huge source of motivation and inspiration for me. I have a race coming up two days from now and I will hear Cory saying to me "just keep moving forward." That will get me to any finish line!
Loved it
Many sports autobiographies are “co-written” by a great athlete and a great writer. This one was written by an average athlete that possesses one hell of a lot of tenacity and grit. Really enjoyed the story and learned a thing or two about ultra running along the way.
Heart of an Ultrarunner
An excellent documentary of an "average" guy acomplishing extraordinary feats of endurance. I don't normally write reviews, but this book deserves recognition as a tale worth reading, if you don't feel awed and inspired by Cory's dedication and perseverance, you need to reevaluate your lease on life. ... read the book, you will be inspired to be a better person.
Enjoyable (no leg cramps for me)
I enjoyed reading about the journeys of Cory, an ultra-marathoner extraordinaire. There is still no way I ever want to suffer through 100 miles but his lessons will stick with me throughout my adventures. We are capable of so much more then we think!
Inspired
Fun writing and a great story of perseverance and downright grit... I was inspired... an easy to read and engaging storyline, Corey takes you along as he crazily runs these races! I think he could have fueled a bit better 😊... but, hey, what do I know? I haven't run an ultra.... yet!
Funny
Funny, interesting, and well written. Makes you want to go out and run
Hilarious, humble, and inspiring
Hilarious and motivating, a fast read that will inspire and entertain. As a middle-to-back of the pack runner I really appreciated Corey's perspective and great attitude. It really is OK not to be anywhere near first; what matters is getting off your butt and just doing whatever it is you want to do.
READ IT NOW
Love, love, LOVE this book. Funny. Honest. Emotional. All of the things that encapsulates running and ultra running. It’s must read.
Awesome read
Loved every moment of this book couldn't put it down. As someone who is also a back of the pack could relate to your book so much
Great book!
Bought the book last month - picked it up the day after my wife and I both ran the 48 hour Across The Years race and I was in laughing AND relating after reading the first chapter crying like a baby when the "sixth toe" arrived. Fast and easy read - very relatable!
Great Read
Personally, I loved this book as I think most people can relate. Being and finishing in back of the pack isn't the most horrible thing ever. Sometimes the experience is what matters most and accomplishing our own personal goals. I could read this book over and over as a personal reminder to have fun with running.
Fresh perspective
This book was amazing! Funny, relatable and a nice look at the ups and downs of ultrarunning.
INSPIRATIONAL!
I've run a couple of ultramarathons but haven't taken the plunge for the big 100 yet. Cory's book has inspired me to do it! In about 13 months I will attempt my first hundy! Thank's Cory! Great book, lots of fun and useful anecdotes. General guidelines for beginner to intermediate ultrarunners, too.
What an adventure!
I loved this book. Cory is inspiring and funny. His insights and stories make me feel like I can do this. I can run an ultra marathon. Hopefully with as much grace and humour! Thanks Cory for sharing your wisdom.
Terrific Book, addicting to read
From the first page to the back cover, I was laughing through this book. I love Author Cory Reese's writing style and all the detail he puts into each story. This was a terrific read and I would highly recommend it to all my runner and non-runner friends alike.
Funny, uplifting and inspirational
If you are interested in reading how someone can push himself to achieve wonderful feats of running endurance with huge humour throughout, this is the book for you. I'm doing my first 50K Trail Ultra in the morning. This has set my head up perfectly.
Very insightful and genuine
Corey clearly writes from the heart as an average guy breaking into the ultra world. He’s not the fastest bunny out of the gate but he doesn’t key that deter him.... read about his love affair with running, you won’t regret it!
Inspiring, funny, relatable.
I am NOT an ultrarunner. I loved this book however because of the humour and the relatable story telling style. It's the kind of book that makes you think "what if that something I want to do is possible?"
Very much enjoyed reading this book. Funny, witty and real. Cory tells of the true struggles of ultra runners using humor and wi
As I prepare for my first and probably only 100 mile journey , I will remember his stories and his promise that it will hurt! I will move forward and can only pray there will be a cinnamon roll and Dr. Pepper waiting for me at the finish!
Funny & Inspiring
I’m planning on running my first marathon & was looking for an inspiring read. Nowhere Near First definitely fit the bill. It was engaging & funny & I felt like I was right there running with Cory.
I absolutely loved this book
I absolutely loved this book! It is probably the best running memoir I have read. As a trail runner, it's easy to get discouraged reading things about and by the elites, but Cory's experience as a back of the pack runner is super relatable. This book is hilarious and inspiring. I highly recommend picking it up.
Fun book, makes me want to tackle that elusive hundo!
This book takes you along numerous runs and races, like you're just another friend running along. Great fun. I've added a few races to my bucket list.
Because 99% of us are Nowhere Near First..
Great read! Inspiring as well as entertaining. As a known "goof ball" at local races and aid stations (tutus, grass skirts and Turkey hats) I really connected with Cory's passion to just have obscene amounts of run while running!
This book was great!!!
I loved this book!!! Though I’ve never run an ultra before, I’ve run a marathon, several 1/2 marathons, 10ks and 5ks, I could easily relate to this book. A really fun read!!!
Absolutely amazing book! Cory captures everything awesome
Absolutely amazing book! Cory captures everything awesome, funny, painful, and courageous about ultrarunning. Some parts are so funny I was crying I was laughing so hard. His witty use of metaphors and similes is great. One of the best books about running I have ever read! Definitely going to read it again....and again.
Amazing, inspiring
It's fantastic to read an account of a man's ultra running attempts whose not an elite. This is a down to earth love song to the ultra running world. Read it and be inspired!
Great book for all runners
As a BOO ultra runner I really enjoyed Cory's humor in the many situations we all face. I think much of these feelings extend to all runners and that many outside the ultra community would enjoy this book. Although I'm not sure how he musters the energy for a jump at the end.
Awesome read
Very inspiring story.Cory can inspire everyone in this book to get up off the couch and get out there for a run.I look forward to reading his next book into the furnace 😀
Awesome!
As a middle of the pack runner this book hits very close to home and has motivated on all of my runs and in my dream to become an ultrarunner. Thanks Cory!
One of the best books we've read in a long time
One of the best books we've read in a long time! My husband is an ultra runner and I'm a distance runner so his jokes and experiences were extra funny to us but I think even a couch potato would appreciate Cory's humor.
Enjoyable and easy read!
Easy and enjoyable read! There were some adventures I wound have preferred more detail concerning but I enjoyed the writing style immensely!
Great encouraging book on Trail/Ultra running
Fun read for anyone, especially trail runners or aspiring ultra runners. It is great to read about normal people who just enjoy running and accomplishing difficult goals. Very funny at times. It makes me want to get out an run more.
A must read for anyone loves ultrarunning or any kind ...
A must read for anyone loves ultrarunning or any kind of running. Cory's stories of his race highs and lows are hilarious and endearing. He also reminds us why we run. Not to win a race, but to continue to push yourself to a limit you never thought possible.
Highly recommend that you get this book
For you running junkies, this is one of those cover to cover books you won't want to put down. Cory's stories and experiences strike a chord that will resonate in your runner's soul. Highly recommend that you get this book. It'll make your feet happy!
Candid and Encouraging
This was such an intimate, personal look into the mind of a runner. As a developing runner and aspiring ultra runner Cory's humble, "Nowhere Near First" description of his athletic exploits instills me with confidence and enthusiasm to move forward with my own attempts at running.
Quirky fun read.
Fun reading for those who do ultras or want to do ultras.
Well written
