From the author of the bestseller Eat and Run, a thrilling memoir about his grueling, exhilarating, and immensely inspiring 46-day run to break the speed record for the Appalachian Trail.

Scott Jurek is one of the world's best known and most beloved ultrarunners. Renowned for his remarkable endurance and speed, accomplished on a vegan diet, he's finished first in nearly all of ultrarunning's elite events over the course of his career. But after two decades of racing, training, speaking, and touring, Jurek felt an urgent need to discover something new about himself. He embarked on a wholly unique challenge, one that would force him to grow as a person and as an athlete: breaking the speed record for the Appalachian Trail.

North is the story of the 2,189-mile journey that nearly shattered him. When he set out in the spring of 2015, Jurek anticipated punishing terrain, forbidding weather, and inevitable injuries. He would have to run nearly 50 miles a day, every day, for almost seven weeks. He knew he would be pushing himself to the limit, that comfort and rest would be in short supply -- but he couldn't have imagined the physical and emotional toll the trip would exact, nor the rewards it would offer.

With his wife, Jenny, friends, and the kindness of strangers supporting him, Jurek ran, hiked, and stumbled his way north, one white blaze at a time. A stunning narrative of perseverance and personal transformation, North is a portrait of a man stripped bare on the most demanding and transcendent effort of his life. It will inspire runners and non-runners alike to keep striving for their personal best.

North - Such an amazing book by Scott and Jenny Jurek

North - Such an amazing book by Scott and Jenny Jurek. Thank you for sharing your ups and downs, highs and lows, grit and tenacity to follow your dream! Thank you for not giving up and walking it in. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. I followed Scott and Jenny on social media in 2015, when he was tackling the AT. I caught up with him in Duncannon, PA, and snapped this selfie on the run. I couldn’t wait for the book to come out and it certainly didn’t disappoint. If you are looking for a dose of inspiration, this book is some serious medicine. Scott shows the importance of not giving up on yourself and also how critical it is to surround yourself with others who will tell it to you straight. So many great takeaways and lessons from this book!

Not bad/Not great

Easy read and pretty entertaining if you're a fan of Scott or the AT. The constant references to him being vegan and the last 25% of the book being anticlimactic gives it a 3.

I was gripped from the start...

I have read the majority of ultra-endurance books for sale on Amazon. I loved Mr. Jurek's first book, but felt that it left me wanting for the raw details of his struggles during specific races. He gave some awesome training advice, packed the book full of vegan recipes, and detailed some of his greatest achievements. Yet somehow, it seemed impersonal or maybe immature ((not Scott himself, but the book (Eat & Run) as a whole)). But this book is on a totally different wavelength. I was gripped from the start, and looked forward to every evening after work so I could keep reading. I was riveted by the rawness of the story, and intrigued by how different the writing style and content was from Mr. Jurek's first book. This book opened a window into his personal life and struggle, and I felt like I was with him through the incredible test of endurance posed by the AT record attempt. This is awesome, as well worth your time if you have any interest in such things. My hat is off to Scott, this easily deserves to be called his greatest achievement yet (both in literary and endurance realms).

Loved it!

But I don't think his wife's contributions added all that much to the story. Hence the deduction of 1 star. (In all honesty, I found her to be a little annoying.) Jurek's feat was truly amazing and his coverage of the journey in this book kept me on the edge of my seat. I finished it in just a couple of days. I love reading about runners and extreme journeys and this story more than fit the bill. I'm glad I read it.

An intimate look at an amazing achievement

Scott Jurek is an inspiration ad always, but his wife is the glue that holds this whole book (and trip) together. I have nothing but admiration for them both after reading the story of how. Scott had always seemed like a superman. This story shows how human he is.

Jurek Takes Us on His Journey to Break the Appalachian Trail Speed Record

In 2015, Scott Jurek broke the AT speed record in 46 days, 8 hours, 7 minutes. North: Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail is the story of his journey. Jurek takes us on his journey and enthralls us with his challenges. I didn't find this book one bit boring, in fact, I had trouble putting it down. I was both amazed and stunned at his perseverance. There were many points in the book that I felt frustrated with him--be it when he would stop to spend time with fans instead moving forward or when he was so ill he should have gone to the hospital instead of pushing ahead. Pretty sure his wife felt the same way. But that's what separates the champions from us mere mortals, right? Not only was Jurek's quest an attempt to reconnect with his old self, the ultramarathoner who needed to beat himself one more time, he sums up this challenge as "transformation". On his journey he says, he found himself again.

Great adventure on the Appalachian Trail

Scott Jurek is one of my personal heros. A scrawny kid from Minnesota does Big Things for ultra marathoning, veganism and the human spirit. I was delighted to find a new book by him, reflecting on and recounting his (crazy) journey North on the Applachian Trail, in search of the FKT (Fastest Known Time). He chooses the less-trodden direction, to follow Spring, exhibiting his whimsical ability to enjoy being. What transpires is a grueling march fueled as much by his friends and wife as by his own ability to hang on to a goal no matter the personal cost. Scott personifies Mind over Matter, as do all of his friends, many of whom I have also read about since apparently all crazy extreme athletes know each other. I enjoyed the book and recommend for anyone who likes running, hiking, the Appalachian trail or adventure.

Good story - weird commentary on the south

I liked the story but it seemed like the authors were afraid of southerners.. they were very judgmental of people they didn't know in the south.

You inspire!

Thanks for living and telling that epic adventure! Well written and compelling throughout. Loved Jenny's perspective. What will be next?

Best to read it

It is a wonderful book. Interesting and exciting. I knew he had set the record but I couldn't see how it was going to happen! Great detail, but not too much. I started out listening to the audio version and I'm glad I had a chance to get a read on the personalies that way. However it was just too slow going. JLu is hard to understand for an aging male who is missing higher frequencies :-)

4.5 stars - inspiring and motivational story about a very personal endeavor for Scott and Jenny Jurek

The title says it all - this book chronicles Jurek's 2015 attempt at the Appalachian Trail FKT (fastest known time). He made the attempt with a tremendous amount of help from his wife Jenny and some friends. Every chapter ends with Jenny's point of view on things as well which provides not only interesting external perspective on Jurek but also some insight on the simultaneously monumental undertaking required to assist with an endeavor of this scope. He's an incredible athlete - it's amazing to what extremes he is able to push himself. I also found the book refreshingly honest from both Scott and Jenny's view points with regards to their struggles in life and the difficulties of tackling a very personal endeavor for them in an incredibly open, social-media way. If anything, despite Jurek already being so open and inviting, I think it just makes us all want to know even more about what's going on his life. He's just such a likable guy that you want to know more about all the gossip he alludes to in his books. This was a "criticism" some had about Eat & Run - we all wanted to know the nitty gritty of his divorce! Understandably, for a man who already shares and opens up so much, it seems he tries to balance this with his level of comfort as to how much he wishes to reveal. Nevertheless, being huge fans our gossip-mongering hearts always yearn for more. I honestly think a lot of us, myself included, just want to hear more from him about his divorce and how it affected him - to learn how a man with the capacity to endure the tempests of physical human suffering made it through what is generally a very devastating life event. I would give the book 4.5 stars if I could - the half star off solely because I continue to yearn to know even more about his life. Suffice it to say, I won't fault him for not going more in-depth, but I mention this all because it's possible, like me, you will read North and enjoy it and enjoy getting to know Scott Jurek, but you may also find yourself wanting even more depth and insight. It is otherwise an interesting read about attempting the AT (which I have never done myself). I did not realize what a harrowing challenge it is and the unique dangers of each portion of the trail. It has been a while since I read Eat & Run but I believe I enjoyed it a bit more (including the wonderful recipes at the end of each chapter). Of course that book and this are about two different times in his life. North is definitely motivational. No doubt that many pieces of it will play through my mind in the future to provide strength and inspiration during difficult times. Thank you Scott and Jenny for sharing this very personal endeavor with the world - both back then in the moment and now.

Suffering

This book pushes home the point that to really push our limits and discover what we can achieve, we need to suffer. As a runner this is something I am reminded of every morning but Jurek pushed it to the limit. The interweaving of Scott and Jenny Jurek's perspectives is very entertaining. The trail stories could use a little more descriptive banter, but that may be because the author was somewhat delirious from his efforts!

It's different book than Eat & Run and different Scott Jurek. But throughout this book he is looking for his younger self

It`s an awesome book. It was more difficult to get into it for me than when I was reading Eat&Run but it's definitely worth it. It's interesting insight into the former champion's mind. He is struggling to find the same spark he had when he was younger. He is unable to compete on the elite level anymore and he doesn't know who he is anymore and what to do. Then there is a Jenny's point of view. Thanks to her we have a detailed description of what it takes to plan a "trip" like this one and how to deal not only with a lot of life and travelling difficulties but with her husband's struggles as well. I think Scott underestimated how difficult such an FKT attempt could be and it's very rewarding to read about how he realized that and how he was able to cope (with some help from his best friends and fans) with all the troubles it brought him.

If you love running... you’ll read this without stopping!

I just finished North, and I’m in awe again. I loved Eat and Run for its easygoing narrative, the way that Scott weaved race day stories, yummy vegan recipes, and memories from his childhood into a motivational biography. This was a tale of how a personal goal turned into a story of strength and friendship, of how there is nothing in the world like the community of runners. Scott is an incredible athlete and a badass record breaker but what I love most is that he always displays humility and kindness, and it’s so refreshing to read a story that is less about him personally as much as it is about the trails, the people, the melding of runners both competing and simultaneously championing each other. I absolutely loved reading his wife Jenny’s portions, it added so much and gave such a richer perspective to the whole adventure. I cried the last few chapters and it made me want to lace up my shoes now and conquer some personal roadblocks. Can’t wait until the next adventure and the next book, Team Jurek!

Great read!

This was even better than I expected. I've been a longtime fan of Scott's so I was really excited to dig into North. Unexpectedly, my favorite part of the book ended up being the split of the chapters between Scott's narrative and the parallel experience of Jenny, his wife and support crew for the FKT attempt. Together, they crafted a more complete tail of the experience of attempting a beast of a record like the AT thru-hike record. While a novel like this could easily end up feeling as repetitive as days on the trail itself, the rotating cast of characters and different experiences both Scott and Jenny faced helped keep each chapter feeling fresh, and the tone of the narrative shifted as the weariness of the trail set in towards the end. Scott and Jenny managed to construct a genuine and honest account of the trail, their crewmates, and the different people they met along the way, something that doesn't always happen when friends are involved.

such a fantastic book! such wonderful interplay between the Scott and ...

such a fantastic book! such wonderful interplay between the Scott and Jenny sections, it really gives you a terrific feel for what each of them were going through during this little "adventure". their distinct voices and takes on what was going on really fleshes out the story of this journey. additionally, the photos and maps are great!

Motivational, inspiring, this is the stuff of great storytelling

Scott Jurek is one of my favorite athletes, and his books really pull you into the experience of ultrarunning. I feel like I know the people in his stories personally, they come to life on the pages. It's fantastic writing, and highly inspirational, you may not get far into it before you jump out of bed and start hitting the trails yourself. It was a joy to read about his trials and tribulations, to see that amazing athletes are human like all of us with the same flaws and challenges, but its their spirit and dedication that drives them to greatness.

Inspirational from beginning to end

This is a memoir written by two authors: Scott and his wife , Jenny, the ultimate Sherpa. Scott and Jenny don't spare any of the agonies and hardships of running a difficult 2189 miles long trail trying to beat the FKT. The reader comes to understand how mentally taxing an endurance race lasting 6 weeks could be. Scott had many friends that were a huge help to him to push him on the trail when he wanted to give up.

Great book on something I would love to but probably will never do

There is a strong place in my heart for trails and the amazing people who conquer them. This story was well written, highlighting the good and terrible parts of the journey. I can't help but compare this journey to 'Wild' and in the end I know I would prefer a long sanguine journey over an attempt to break a record. I just can't understand the 'why' of being in a place and not having an opportunity to fall in love with being there. I do miss the point, I guess. At 57 years of age I look forward to experiencing at least part of the PCT and I know that for me doing it Scotts way is the antithesis of what I want to experience. Still, a good read.

Highly recommend for all

A gripping, poignant and inspiring read. Harkens to AWOL on the AT and A Walk through the Woods. Hard to put down, well-written, from the heart, no holds barred. Raw. Insights on how to put things back together when they seem to be coming apart. A Must Read. Highly recommend for all.

Finding my way

Enjoyed this book. I have only run one serious trail ultra. Old Dominion 100 maybe 25 yrs ago. 21 hrs Reading about adventure running helped me remember my running prime. Thank you Scott. I have been a diagnosis after stroke that I'll never run again... but good news is I have lived so many good years (70) I can say God has blessed me with many memories. As I say "I'm still walking and talking" Running has been my life and now is the time to give back. Coach Greg

Inspiring

A great adventure shared by a man and his wife, both of whom happen to be ultrarunners. I only do distances up to 50K, but I still learned a lot. I’ve hiked sections of the AT with my wife in the mid-Atlantic region near the halfway point in Boiling Springs, PA while we were training for a rim-to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon. This book brought back some great memories.

A Story Worth Reading

Though I followed the journey closely while it happened, I learned a lot about what Scott and his crew went through. Jurker and Jlu’s honesty about the challenges they faced and their perspectives about the places and people they interacted with were at times touching and then surprising or even upsetting. His book is a good read for those people interested in hiking the AT or for those who want to get a glimpse of what it takes to be successful in ultra marathons:

Scott Jurek & Appalachian Trail... Mission Impossible

Excellent read... Scott Jurek and his wife Jenny have a plan for Scott to set the fastest time over the Appalachian Trial. However, a series of twists and turns force them to make several “ seat of the pants” changes for Scott to conquer the mental and physical challenges of the AT. It is a humble and often gut-wrenching tale that can inspire anyone facing great adversity to reach a coveted goal.

Just a great read

People often will say that as book was so good they couldn’t put it down - this book was so good I could not put it down. I felt compelled to finish it as quickly as possible. It’s a very well written story on a very compelling subject. Highly recommended.

Recommend highly

Great book. I loved the honesty and heart that Scott spoke of in the book. He’s really great about giving history or the Appalachian trail which I found very interesting. I also liked how his wife wrote sections in this book. She has an awesome personality. I’ve been following Scott since I got into running back in 2005 so it’s great to see him so vulnerable and amazing perseverance in this book, older yet true and strong

Great journey with many ups and downs!

This is a testament to what the human body and mind can endure. Traveling through the hard stuff can change you, but mostly it just helps you to discover who you are at the core. Scott, you are an amazingly kind and strong person. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you. Enjoy the next journey of life into fatherhood. Being a parent is tough and rewarding at the same time! I recommend this book to anyone who is a runner, or going through a self discovery journey.

Not nearly as good as Eat and Run

As a huge fan of Eat and Run and Born to Run, I was a big Scott fan and he really is the reason I eat as healthy as I do today. But North is boring in comparison, and the parts by his wife are unbearable. I mean, she talks about her period, in a book about Scott running the AT. And she just seems judgemental and elitist. Scott is the champ here, I want to be hearing from him. Still reccomended for fans of Scott and the AT, just dissappointed overall

joy, and most of all greatfullness for the support ...

As a former ultra runner, I found that this book put me back in touch with the whole experience of pain, disorientation, joy, and most of all greatfullness for the support of friends, family and the rest of the ultra community. Thanks, Scott and Jenny, for sharing this most personal experience.

Loved it

I followed Scott's trek on social media and was so excited to finally read about his adventure, but this book was so much more than simply "behind the scenes". I loved the parts written by his wife on her experiences off trail also. I couldn't put the book down, and even though I knew he was able to achieve his goal, I still hung on to every word as if the outcome was a mystery.

What are you waiting for?

If you love adventures, or want to be inspired to do adventures, you should read this book. I didn't read it right away because I have no interest in FKTs right now, but it was still inspirational as I embark on my own running adventures and goals.

Hard to put down

Excellent story and story-telling. Read it in 24 hours, so hard to put down.

Such an inspiration!

This isn’t my typical choice of reading material, but I was hooked after the first few pages. I was inspired, and felt like I was a part of Scott’s team. I especially appreciated having Jenny’s perspective included, and by the end I was emotional- as if I were right there with them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for Inspiration.

Wonderful book!

Exceeded my expectations! Not simply an account of Scott’s journey along the trail as it offered much deeper insight as to why he undertook this adventure and included the perspective of his wife and support crew. My only regret about reading the book was that it made me feel sorry I didn’t hike out to meet him when he was nearby.

Inspiring

Very inspiring book. Just thinking about it makes me want to go on a long run. On days I think I can’t do anymore or when I feel lazy, I think of all the miles Scott Jurek had to run everyday of his journey and it motivates me.

The Jureks at Their Best

I read it while I was at the beach and I could hardly put it down. I love the two-perspective approach to the writing. I also enjoyed the cast of characters that contributed to the AT record. Congratulations Scott and Jenny on the record and thank you for generously sharing your story with us.

This book is fantastic, I highly recommend it

This book is fantastic, I highly recommend it! Scott Jurek is an outstanding athlete, person, and author. For runners and non-runners alike, following along on this epic journey is both entertaining and motivating. You won't want to put the book down, and it'll fuel you up for whatever your own adventures lie ahead. Scott's writing and journey will bring out the inner strength in anyone!

Beautifully written. The story was more of a coming ...

Beautifully written. The story was more of a coming of age, and love story. You could gather the athleticism and endurance Scott physically went through between the lines. The book was well written between two individuals, and you got to see how the experience, the trials, the adventure, the camaraderie, of the whole FKT brought Jenny and Scott closer, and how they both grew from their time on the trail. It read easily, and I am so glad, inspired, and grateful they shared this part of themselves in their book.

The Game Changers brought me here

Epic book - love it. I partially bought this book because it’s the same trail Scott ran that was shown in The Game Changers. It was really cool to read about all the details of that challenge for Scott and his wife.

Inspiration just when I needed it most!

Such an incredible read! I pretty much read the entire book on my cross-country flight to California to run the San Francisco Marathon. I was so inspired by Scott’s determination to achieve his goal that, when my marathon got tough, my mantra was “be like Jurker.” From a writing perspective it was very refreshing to get both sides of the journey by interweaving Jenny’s take into each chapter. This was my favorite read from 2018, and I read a lot of books!

Exactly what I hoped it it would be

I underlined, highlighted and copied more pages than about any book. I hope to someday be a thru hiker and this book gave me critical insights to hopefully one day make it happen. Thank you.

What an adventure !

Love Jerker And how he lets us all in to this epic journey of a lifetime. Very few human beings have the body that could withstand the AT in 46 days...or the spirit. Love the parallel account from husband and wife. Well done Jureks!

Exciting Adventure

Great book covering an awesome adventure. I enjoyed the pacing of the book, he slowed down when he needed to and sped the pace up when he needed it. I enjoyed following along with the adventure online when the attempt occurred. Enjoyed reading about the adventure in this book.

Just wow.

The Jureks are such an inspiring couple. Their story is so amazing and it was wonderful to read Jenny's perspective. Her voice will remind me to take time for my husband during my running journeys because they are his too. I was completely engrossed in every chapter and felt all their frustrations and triumphs along the way. Just an overall amazing book.

Scott Jurek bared his soul for the public on this run

I have always greatly admired Scott, he is such a gifted athlete but also a good man. The trials he and his wife went through during the course of this book amaze me and I think it is so true that you are who you surround yourself with. This was quite a journey to take with him and I feel honored to read what was going on inside him as he cranked out insane miles on such a hard trail.

Great, captivating read

I love this book. It kept me interested and gave me a nice spark of motivation to accomplish something great.

Inspirational Read

What an amazing book and story and being able to see and understand it from both Jenny and Scott’s view. Scott had many opportunities to quit and give up but he pushed through. Could not put the book down, really great read and truly inspiring!! Really love the pictures at the end too!!

Absolutely loved this book

Absolutely loved this book. Scott’s AT story and what lead to it are fascinating and his wife, Jenny, has her own unique perspective that makes for a wonderful account of their journey on the AT and in life together. Highly recommend.

Great look inside the mind of a champion

If you enjoyed Born to Run and/or Eat and Run, you will enjoy this book as well. I particularly enjoyed Scott and Jenny's views into what happens in the minds of a runner and his team as they take on an epic challenge.

Scott did it again!

Scott Jurek had my attention from his first book and I was excited to get this one. From page 1 it captured me. I didn’t want to put it down! It was a cool perspective to read Jenny’s side of the experience too. I hope they keep writing books!

What an exciting, crazy, beautiful, challenging adventure.

Awesome book. It inspires me in so many ways. To push myself, to challenge myself, to get outdoors!! I love all the stories of other endurance athletes who came out to support you throughout your FKT attempt. I’ve seen their names in so many other stories too. The world of endurance athletes is a special one. I really enjoyed hearing JLu story and what she endured, she is also just as amazing!

Appalachian Trail runner

Great diary of the runner and his wife’s trials on the beautiful trail. As Scott tries to break the record, his wife supports him in many ways. They are both vulnerable and transparent.

Great book

This is a great read and makes you want to reach for your own dreams. Told from Scott’s point of experience running and his wife’s experience crewing makes it and even better story.

Incredible all around

Amazing. Inspiring. This story embodies everything any human wants to be when she grows up. Thank you Jurker and JLu for sharing this story with us. Loved the storytelling style and could not put it down.

inspiring

The journey was exciting and brutally honest. It really felt like you were there in this book! Good read for sure!

Inspiring and honest

It’s real. I bought this book expecting to be inspired to get outside, run more, etc. Instead, I was inspired to level up my relationships. This book doesn’t sugar coat the realities of relationships being stress tested (Jenny & Scott’s marriage, as well as their friendships) and how they work through them. I just love how humble and honest both Jenny & Scott are in this book. Scott’s comments on Jenny at the end are beautiful.

Amazing tale of achievement.

Such a gripping tale of an astonishing runner and the amazing team that helped him achieve something extraordinary! Scott and Jenny are hero’s! ❤️❤️❤️

Pushing to the Limits

A must read! Sparkling honest glimpse into the depths of their souls, Scot and Jenny, take the reader with them on their FKT journey on the AT trail. “Elective suffering...leads to heightened awareness that leads to a feeling of connectivity with everything.”

That this was an Herculean almost impossible task.

We got to understand the affect on not only the runner but the people that helped him achieve his goal. We are privy to the personalities, the dedicated, focussed efforts along with the weaknesses of these people.

Terrific beginning to end :) I am sure parts of it will come back to me as I struggle during my tiny 50k's 😂

What a great journey, what's not to love? I enjoyed getting to experience Jenny's side as well. Makes me glad my husband is not a runner too ;)

AT adventure of a life time!

Great book that sucks you in, wanting to read more. Scott’s adventure along the AT is inspiring and shows how amazing the human body is. You can accomplish a lot if you put your mind to it and have a strong support group to get you through the dark hours.

Great Read

Burke and Gus wife, Jenny, took this former runner on a great adventure! Hiking a portion of the AT is on the bucket list.

Amazing true grit spirit

I absolutely loved this book. I am a marathon runner who almost lost my life from a freak horse riding accident and running saves my life. I am much slower but I could relate and lived the experience with Scott and Jenny. Well written, heart felt book that is so easy to read. Thank you for pouring your hearts out and sharing your amazing life.

Exciting read

the book I got was had the page numbers off. It was a challenge in itself to read it had to skip around. but that's okay it added to the story

OK read

OK read. I think it is nice to hear about a husband and wife sharing in such a great life event. It was a little uneven in the story telling in terms of the pace of the hike. Still worth the price to buy the book.

Easy Read; Makes You Feel the Pain!

Scott (and Jenny) does a great job of putting you in his head so you can understand the challenges he faced with this journey. This is an easy, light read but there are so many good takeaways from this book. Even though the FKT no long stands, this is still a great read. I read 200 pages in my first sitting, en route home from Europe, and was amused to see the GPS tracker feature a few of the AT’s most famous peaks as we flew over.

Inspirational

If this doesn’t get you thinking about why we run, then not much will. Jurek captures the AT and how it inspires so many in a gripping page turning way. Unputtdownable.

Perseverance

We know the ending but it is a crazy story that defies normal limits. Inspiring to do the trail or to even just get out for a run. I really appreciated hearing from Mrs Jurek and her side of the story.

This was fantastic! A great read.

I loved this book. More than just dry running reports, there are multiple stories of endurance and perseverance that interweave through the narrative. I also loved getting to hear from Jenny Jurek, as well, and seeing the "behind the scenes" of what goes into an event like this as well as how it feels to be someone who is on the supporting lines.

Engaging and inspiring!

This is a fun book. At times, I felt like I was on the trail, running alongside Scott and cheering him on. I'm inspired to run further and to push through the pain to test my own limits. Thank you for this book.

A great read and truly a great journey

Inspirational! A great read and truly a great journey.

A fantastic read

An excellent book. Loved the two perspectives. We all know Scott is an extraordinary athlete & strong individual, but what Jenny did was pretty amazing too. Great to hear the other side of the story. Highly recommended.

Another great by Jurek

I’ve read Eat and Run, Born to Run, and now this and every time I hear stories of Jurek I am inspired and know that there is so much more joy that can be drained from this life. Congratulations sir, you did it all.

Just what I needed

Two weeks away from my first 100 trail run, MST100. I've been anxious and fretting it. This brought some much needed perspective. This was a joy to read, I felt like I was there, and hate I hadn't gotten the trail running big sooner or O would have found you. Inspired to push hsrder.

Thru hiking the Appalachian trails vicariously

Loved it! The visual writing , the whole adventure is riveting . The pain is inevitable but suffering is optional as Scott proves again !

Another great book by Scott Jurek

Another great book by Scott Jurek! I simply could not step away from this one! A must read for any runner and/or hiker.

Great read.

Fast read. Didn't want to put it down. You can almost feel the pain. Great read if you're interested in the Appalachian Trail even if you are not trying to set a record. This is not an easy trail to thru hike.

I laughed - I cried - I’ll read it again and again !

This book brought back the pain and the glory of the AT in an incredibly human and raw way. Worlds away from my multi month NOBO thru-hike in 2011, this book made me laugh and cry all over again. Well done Scott and thanks for letting me struggle and run with your journey through the pages of this book! DocBoom NOBO AT 2011

Excellent book

Great book

What inner strength it must have taken! amazing!!

As a runner who’s longest runs have been marathons, can’t imagine what it would take to run the trail. My husband and I used to say when we retire we would hike the trail. Now that we are retired we say “what we’re we thinking!!” Reading the book it felt like we were there!!

Good running book!

Worth the read! Good book to motivate you to get out on the trails and run!

Great book. Definitely worth the read

Liked: talking about the non-sexy things, such as aging and dealing with coming down from being an elite champion. Makes an elite champion human and relatable to the average person. Talking about the low points. I’m fascinated by peeking inside other people’s suffering. Disliked: not much to be honest. Conclusion: better book than Eat And Run in my opinion.

Delayed gratification 101

Inspiring and honest, worth a read by anyone interested in prolonged suffering and delayed gratification. As someone who lives in a world of extreme perserverence with little tangible gratification, I find this book amazingly accurate.

Good read

This was a good quick read. Enjoyable story.

A super-human effort by an amazing super athlete.

Very good book if you’re interested in what makes an ultra-runner click.

Inspiring, Engaging, Great Read!

I really enjoyed diving into this amazing journey. I felt like I was along for the ride and cheering him on with each page. As someone who is getting into triathlons, this book helped inspire me to keep pushing myself both in training and general life. Highly recommend to others!

Fantastic and Inspiring Journey

So relatable even if you are not an ultramarathoner. He shares his journey with everyone and I definitely appreciated following along.

Could not put this book down!!

This book was absolutely incredible. I seriously could read it over and over. They made you feel as if you were right on the trail with them and I really want to visit the AT now. I ended up buying Eat and Run right after I read this and that was also a great book. I am definitely going to read this again!

Wow what a ride!!!

What an amazingly told story! This book grabs you from the first makes you feel like you are really out there on the trail with them! Congratulations on such an amazing journey!

Does Scott jurek do anything that’s NOT amazing?

I highly recommend this book. Scott and Jenny’s recap of this amazing feat is riveting! I had a hard time putting the book down. I just want to read more of their stories! Their strength is so incredibly powerful and motivating. Thank you to them for sharing their gifts.

Not just about running, an inspiration for anyone try to find their way

You feel like you’re going on an adventure with Scott, Jenny and their friends who come along to be a part of journey, not just on The AT, but also a small window into an intimate part of their life. This book is very inspiring on so many levels of life, it’s not a book about running, but rather a book about just trying to find your way.

Every runner must read

Absolutely well written and a great read!

Check the hardcover book for missing pages

My book is missing 22 pages, from pages 21-53. Having trouble reaching customer service. I purchased the hardcover book. I would welcome the electronic version so I can continue reading the book, which I was enjoying up to page 21.

Wonderful recounting of the prevailing human spirit in one of ...

Wonderful recounting of the prevailing human spirit in one of the toughest endurance endeavors on Planet Earth. Loved hearing the story from his wife Jenny’s perspective while she and Scott were tackling their goal. A must read for ultra runners and outdoor enthusiasts! You won’t be able to put it down.

Great read runner or not

Unlike Eat & Run which I enjoyed but came off a bit preachy about eating vegan, this was more of a day by day report of an epic adventure. I enjoyed hearing both Scott & Jenny’s perspective.

Great, honest read

Scott (and JLu) give an entertaining and authentic account of an inspiring journey. Not a trail guide as much as a life guide. Awesome read!

This book made me tempted to visit the US and go look for myself...

Although I never ran more than 5-10 kilometers myself, I found Scott's mental running story very inspiring and entertaining. I also liked the vivid description of the Appalachian Trail's geography, history and the many interesting anecdotes he recounted. This book made me tempted to visit the US and go look for myself...

An adventure!

What an adventure! So much grit in this book! I loved reading this and pondering all that running draws out of us and how the human spirit moves us.

Great Book

Wonderful book written from the perspective of Scott Jurek and his wife Jenny.

Fun read

It's a nice read. Good to see how someone adapts to the next phase of their running career. Creative and exciting adventure.

Can't stop reading

I'm halfway through and can't put the book down. I've spent a lot of time on the AT in VA since I grew up minutes away from the SNP. One of my favorite runners and one of my favorite books. Jenny's commentary at the end of each chapter is awesome and gives the insight of crewing.

inspiring

this will motivate you to not quit!

Fantastic.

Epic book. Loved it.

North doesn’t disappoint

If you enjoy the AT and all of it’s lore this book is for you. I know that I’ll never run (or walk) it but this is the next best thing. Enjoyed also getting to know the Jureks better.

Finishing the book this New Year's day is a great way to start my 2019!

Scott and Jenny's experience and accomplishment in the AT is truly inspiring! The way they narrated their experiences really took me there. It's like I was with them in the AT. A must read for anyone who wants inspiration, specially for runners, hikers and adventurers.

Incredible, amazing, awesome!

The human spirit is incredible. The courage do go for an FKT is amazing. The book was, to put it simply, awesome.

Inspiring, vulnerable, raw

I truly enjoyed being drawn into the raw details of his and Jlu’s moments of elation and suffering. Highly recommend!

Powerful Read, Runner or Not

“You hike your own hike....that’s the way it should be..”. Jurek teaches how love can be expanded through his course over the AT. This is one of those reads that proves the impossible possible and itches the reader to question what is stirring within them.

Loved the journey disliked JLu

Loved the journey disliked JLu. Can’t believe the accomplishment even despite his wife’s paranoid, fearful, stereotype susceptible rants regarding the indigenous along the way. More positive vibes from the greats like Horty and Speedgoat. Overall great read! So inspirational.

Great read

Really enjoyed reading this. Got a little slow but still really liked it.

100% inspirational story!

I had already read Scott Jurek’s Eat & Run book so reading this one was a no brainer. This book was so inspirational and truly make me think of running and nature as a purely spiritual journey. 100% recommend this book for runners AND non-runners!

A great & inspiring read

A great look into Scott Jurek's incredible journey along the AT. I loved getting Jenny's perspective throughout the journey as well. It's an entertaining and inspiring read and made me want to get back out on the AT.

Motivational book

This book is so motivating! Couldn't put it down....wish the book was longer!

I love the CD/audio as it is read by the authors

I love the CD/audio as it is read by the authors, and brings so much truth and empathy to their story

Great read

I loved this book. I liked the shifting perspective of Scott and his wife. If you're a runner or a hiker or someone pushes themselves to extremes and isn't sure why, this book is for you.

Great read

It was a wonderful read. After recovering from having 3 fractures in my foot. I couldn't get motivated to start running again. This book really help me get that motivation back.

Perfect Book! Special Forces = Best Chapter!

Great book! Audio is great too and nice to hear Jenny and Scott read the audio! Really cool to be apart of "Special Forces" chapter in the book. Scott and Jenny are great people!

Intoxicating journey of suffering and success

Expressing the inner works of ones soul is a gift, reflecting on the wrapping paper of that gift after you have unwrapped it is intimate and inviting. I feel you could easily read this book multiple times and still have a desire to lace up and do it agin once completed. Great work great story must read

Great running adventure

Loved everything about this very jerker story. If you’re a runner or a human you will surely find something to relate to

Gripped me from the start and never let go

This is an excellent story of perseverance in the face of incredible odds. A well written, moving story of overcoming fear/doubt. It has been tremendously inspiring to my own running hobby. I highly recommend everyone read this book.

Amazing journey story!

Loved this book! Through the entire trip, Scott and Jenni told the story of the human spirit. Wonderful reading! Throughout the book, the tension built perfectly to a finish that left me full of tear-filled emotion. Awesome! I can't wait to share it with my sons.

Greg’s Review of “North”

A great read for any ultra runner. Empowering and inspirational for those days when things aren’t great. “This Is What We Do” sums it up nicely. Would recommend for anyone interested in the human ability to endure and overcome

Amazing Journey

One of the most amazing, beautiful, inspirational books I have come across. Scott Jurek and his wive JLu will leave you wanting to put on your shoes and get after it.

Great book!

I really enjoyed this book 👍👍👍👍👍

An inspirational read

Motivating and inspiring me to consider journeys that could challenge me in New ways. I enjoyed that both Jenny and Scott shared their thoughts throughout the experience.

Inspirational read, what will it inspire you to do?

Read nearly every book about the AT and couldn’t put this book down. Scott and the wife JLu worked together to pull off a FKT record and an epic journey as a couple.

Fantastic read, very vivid imagery.

Fantastic read. I'm buying my mom her own copy instead of sharing hahaha

My running hero... and very enjoyable story ...

Fantastic Adventure

Inspiring adventure story. I couldn’t put the book down. Will long remember this great story. Was rooting for Scott and team all the way. Now one of my favorite books.

Incredible

I lived every word.of this book. A superb account of an incredible feat. I am in awe of the man and the journey. Highly recomended.

Inspiration

Incredible story. I followed Scott’s Appalachian Trail hike online, was great to relive and get so much more of the story. As an added bonus, reading Scott’s books always inspires me to train harder and dream bigger!

Excellent read!!

A great story, well written and kept my attention. Can't wait to read it again!

Should be required reading for all thru-hikers/runners

Excellent read for both devotees of the AT and runners alike. Even those who have never hiked or run a mile will be inspired by the sacrifice, the stamina, and sheer will of the author.

Solid

I wasn't into this one early but I'm glad I stuck it out. Pretty insane physical feat to say the least!

Amazing!

Inspiring running story from the GOAT. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a source of inspiration in their running journey.

A must read!

This is an inspiring story of Scott’s journey north and the community of people necessary to make it happen. Just wow.

Loved it!

I couldn’t put this book down. The writing was truly inspirational. I had read Jureks other books but this one showed me really who he is.

Great documentary

I love AT stories and really admire the Jureks for their honesty and integrity. This was a book I was sad to finish

Awesome account of the AT

Brought me back to fond memories of the AT and was interesting to see how the ups and downs of a thru run would go. Highly recommend!

Good read

Always motivating and inspiring.

Great read. Entertaining, inspiring!

Be careful when you read this book! It will make you want to get out and have an adventure of your own.

Pages out of order

The book was out of order!?! I got to about page 30 and all of a sudden it skipped ahead to 52, then several pages later I was back in the 30s

Inspirational

A great read for anyone that loves the sport of running. A book that is truly inspirational......keep pushing, one foot in front of the other

Made me feel like I was there

Wonderful. Makes me want to drive to the trial head. Thank you for sharing this with us Scott! Highly recommend.

Amazing story

Engaging read, worth it just for the descriptions of the interaction with all of the folks who helped and those who “helped”.

Inspiring and a great read

Scott Jurek does it again.

Page turner

Excellent read and motivator for running!

Great book by an amazing human

Love his books, wounderful read

Good read!

A quick and enjoyable read about an incredible journey. If you like endurance sports and/or the AT it's a great blend.

Great Read

Fun adventure that inspires you on what the human body can endure. Really enjoyable

Great motivator

Great read anywhere, really got me motivated to get out and hit the trails again

Well written and exciting!

This was a wonderful book! Loved both perspectives and a very real look at the AT from a runner’s perspective. A must read for anyone who loves the great outdoors or running.

Good read

Easy read. It was a nice dialogue between husband and wife and a good balance of running and emotional experiences.

Powerful and humble - every runner should read this book!

This book gave me all of the running feelings, the courage to tackle a huge goal, and the comfort to know the most important stuff is already inside us. It is the running book of a generation.

You need to be who you are and do what you do

This is a forty-six days and eight hours adventure in a trail. Tough challenge. Tough people. Juker and JLu tested their limits breaking the Appalachian Trail speed record (in the audiobook they read this book together). The plan was run about 80 km a day and beat the record by four days. Since things are hard to predict, Scott beat it by 3 hours and something. Full of drama and insane people (Speedgoat, Tarzan, Ralsty, Special Forces, ...). At the beginning was hard to understand how Scott managed to heal from injuries caused by running while doing some more running! After thirty days he was running through hell… Takeaway: You need to be who you are and do what you do.

Five Stars

Wonderful!

and has to be one of the great classics on running

Well, this book is almost a thriller, and has to be one of the great classics on running. It is not a manual or how to do, it simply gives you deep insight into the extreme nature of a long distance run, some might say mad abuse. But the reader can't help but wonder, will Scott win through, much less certain than a Bond movie !. The critical role of his partner in then outcome is nicely explained, as well as other friends and helpers

Five Stars

Anyone who has read Scott's first book can attest to the inspiration that he emanates. He pushes himself mentally and physically to the brink, time and time again, along one of the most notable trails in the world. It's hard to put down once you begin, almost as if you were crewing for him (without the stress of logistics or long nights). Thank you Jenny and Scott for sharing this story with the world!!

Inspirational and Spellbinding

Jen Jurek writes “Elective suffering is such a strange thing”. “North” is the account of Scott Jurek’s attempt at setting the FKT (Fastest Known Time) for the Appalachian Trail. His wife Jen coauthors the book with him. The book is both inspirational and spellbinding. It is a great adventure book!

The story of running the entire AT

I’m fascinated by the Appy Trail. The fact that a person could run it in 45 days is amazing. This is Scott Jurek’s story told from both his and his wife, Jenny’s point of view.

An Incredible Story Poorly Told

Disclaimer: This review is shaped by personal opinion, contains modest spoilers, and is only possible because of the hard work of the author(s) who wrote this book (to whom, for better or worse, I am grateful). A story of an ultra marathoner attempting to set the fastest known time on the AT. The book is not particularly well written or well organized--one could imagine this story, in abler hands, as far more compelling. As it stands, the writing--especially the portions about the couple's relationship--comes across as immature. The authors, attempting to deliver authenticity, instead come across as impetuous, shallow, and ultimately unlikeable. It is the story of a truly amazing feat (although somewhat strange in its conception as it is altogether unlike a traditional Appalachian Trail thru-hike) but an unfortunate telling of the tale. The dramatic tale was somehow devoid of tension because of the haphazard, journal-style organization. Still, the force of will required to accomplish this feat is compelling. D+

50/50

Really love reading all about Scott’s adventures, both via audible and physical copies- but I found it REALLY hard to listen to JLu’s portions in my audible edition of North. Her reading style and slow, monotonous tone paired with her self-centered attitude a lot of the times made for difficult listening. I was tempted to fast forward through the chapters when she was narrating. I certainly enjoyed their adventure, but brace yourself for her audible version.

Good enough for Scott Jurek fans; otherwise don't waste your time

1. I've read and completely enjoyed Born to Run (the best book that features Scott Jurek) as well as Eat / Run. As such, as soon as I found out that Scott wrote another book, I eagerly checked out North (via Audible). Here are my brief thoughts: a: The overall story and / or the way it was written simply was "ok"; it's interesting enough and inspirational enough at times, but in general it's not written in a compelling manner and is rather tedious. b: The book would have been much better if his wife's contribution was eliminated; I have a suspicion that he was obligated (probably unstated and unconsciously) to have her included. Her voice (again via Audible) is uninspired, she sounds literally half asleep while reading, has poor enunciation and has a whining voice. Her content also makes her come off as a complainer and someone Scott has to cater to so as to keep the enterprise from imploding. Furthermore, as opposed to Scott, who has always come across as an open minded and friendly soul , his wife comes across as a judgmental elitist (ie reference the numerous subtle but noticeable negative stereotypical jabs at Southerners). As someone from the enlightened city of Boulder, you would assume that she would have a better grasp of reality, but this is obviously not the case. c: The highlights for me, were the inclusion / descriptions of the various friends who helped Scott along this massive undertaking; I especially like the "Speed Goat"; funny and amazing. 2. Only if one is a Scott Jurek fan, should one read this book. Otherwise, the lack of inspired writing and the inclusion of his wife's nonessential material should render it a waste of time for most people. For the average reader who just wants to read something about endurance running and specifically Scott Jurek; it's a no brainier, read "Born to Run". Another well written book about ultra running is "Finding Ultra".

Inspirational, educational, but too much AT negativity

I learned that Scott was going to run right past my house (which borders the trail) and we set up so that we could get a picture of him AND our yard as he ran by. Simple thing, but my wife and I were excited. (We learned about this as Don walked over from Castle Black while we were working in our yard and asked if he could use our hose to do dishes. He insisted that he not impose when we suggested using our kitchen sink, instead.) As he washed, Don explained everything to us, what was happening, about Scott, how many miles he'd averaged thus far, how all the runners were with him helping pace him, how Jenny was there with him the entire time with food and a place to rest, and was genuinely very nice and most informative. When Scott finally came through, we snapped our pictures and as we moved out of his way, Scott stopped us and insisted on a quick selfie. He was so nice! We really appreciated that he took the time to do this and have that very brief conversation, especially knowing that he was walking into a powerful storm at the top of Mt. Greylock in MA. (I was very disturbed how they treated Don in the book, by the way. He didn't deserve that.) So, Scott was wonderful and the book was spot on depicting who he is. A major problem I have with this book is the negativity and the repeated prejudice on behalf of Jenny. I've hiked the trail many, many days in multiple states and living adjacent to the trail, I've had numerous conversations with hikers. Maybe they wanted to build up the suspense and try to make this experience seem more treacherous, but in so many places of Jenny's writings I found myself really, really not liking her. (Granted, living in a van for 45 days with all the associated stress can really mess with people, so I'm sure she's a really nice person in real life.) But there were many instances where I wondered out loud, "I can't believe they actually put that in writing!" Some examples: All people with a Southern flag are racists who don't like Hispanic and Asian people. She got mad because Scott was spending time with fans and fellow trail runners instead of running alone with her, and just days before his record AFTER knowing he may not have enough days to make it even with running 50 miles every day, she runs away down a side trail, makes him CHASE HER DOWN A HILL, and even almost throws his GPS tracker away after she ripped it off of him (which would've voided the record!). He'd already run 30+ miles and needed to run through midnight... AGAIN! All because he wasn't giving her enough attention. We also learned that she had a period less than three days before his record (her first after a miscarriage, so it WAS significant, but still... I wondered how this affected Scott having had just a few hours of sleep in the prior 3 days.) And before that, we learned about her friends and how they met. She climbed the half dome (with a picture of that in the book). Oh, we also learned about how many people were murdered on the trail and that a guy died from a snakebite and a 63 year old woman wondered off to pee or poop, got lost, and starved to death. Her body was found, with a note, 2 years later. Every time the book changed to her writing (which is about 1/3) I begrudgingly read or skimmed or just wanted to skip over. Towards the end, it became more and more like it was a spoiled girl who also wanted lots of attention and for us to to think she was awesome, too. (We were reminded multiple times that she'd completed ultramarathons, too, and other awesome stuff.) Scott is great. The fact that he powered through injuries that would stop most everyone else is a major inspiration. And what he accomplished his last two weeks is simply remarkable. So I can't say the book is bad. Even though I'd already known he barely broke the record, I was very caught up in the last few chapters of the book (minus Jenny's distractions). It was inspirational and I honestly learned things despite already knowing the AT very well. So, I recommend the book. You'll be a better person after reading it.

Heads "South" After the First Few Chapters

As a fellow vegan runner, I've long been a fan of the Jurker, who has served as a source of inspiration for my myriad odysseys in the world of endurance sports. This book, unfortunately, is not worth buying. It reads more like an extended blog post than a story of "pure suspense, adventure, and inspiration" that's described on the cover. It's labored, plotless, and extremely poorly written, winding through disjointed chapters with no climax or denouement. Dean Karnazes's books are more compelling. Perhaps the audio book might have been better!

This book is not his greatest achievement...

I love the book Eat And Run from Scott Jurek and I was really looking forward to read his new book. Eat and Run was an inspiring book with very good tips for ultra-running and excellent vegan recipes. North is far more self-centered, and I guess Scott Jurek is not his prime anymore and it is a feeling that was constantly present in this book. It didn't feel at the end of the book that he found his way, just that he had a good support from his wife and fellow ultra-marathon runners to make it to the end, barely beating the previous AT running time, which since then I believe has already been improved twice. The perspective from his wife was sometimes useful, but other times just plainly annoying or repeating. I don't know sometimes it felt like they needed to fill the pages with words to have a book. I really respect Scott Jurek, but this book, meh. Buy

Good, Not Great.

Overall a good book and very interesting topic indeed. However a little too much "JLu" - who is JLu? It is his second wife and half the book is written from her perspective. Also, "JLu" doesn't drink milk, she drinks almond milk. She doesn't have breakfast, she has an all natural smoothie. We get it "JLu" you are healthy and outdoorsy but nobody really bought this book to hear from you. Tone is also a little ignorant when talking about the South - standard boiler plate language from people not from here - Confederate flags, Deliverance, etc. Outdated and nasty stereotypes from people who no doubt consider themselves progressive. One final critique - every single person in the book going by a cute nickname gets old quick - Jurker, JLu, Horty, etc. Is this a book or a kids cartoon? Overall a good book but not nearly as good as Born to Run. Would recommend as a library read but probably not worth the cost.

Frustrating, Strange Narrative

I'm an avid ultrarunner, and enjoyed Scott's other books A LOT. However, North was a huge disappointment. It's good when Scott is describing the events of his journey. However, that's only a small portion of the book. The rest is an attempt to shoehorn the voyage into some kind of narrative that seems to have been constructed only to include his wife (who I'm sure is a nice person to her husband but comes across as just a horrible person who hates everyone). It made the whole endeavor come across as self-centered, self-serving and selfish. It just made me sad. I kept thinking to myself as I read this: That's not why we get out there. At least that's what I used to think. I used to think getting out there was just something we loved. It's a bitter pill to swallow, realizing that is not the case for everyone. That's OK, to each their own.

A remarkable feat.

A remarkable feat. I am amazed what the human body can accomplish. Scott has a long list of running accomplishments that us regular runners can only imagine. To cover this distance in such a short time takes extraordinary physical and mental capabilities of which very few have. It is a quick read and one is along for the tough ride, just waiting to get to that final climb. The coarse language was not necessary, and did not add anything worthy. For some reason, the couple thought the South was full of booger men, just waiting to pounce, and they took several swipes at my area of the country. They are world travelers, and there are sketchy people everywhere, so little surprised they seemed to go out of their way to stigmatize this section. Runners and hikers will definitely enjoy.

If you are in source of mindful inspiration!

I just completed my first marathon in April, 2018. I bought this as a gift to myself, when I had heard of an ultrarunner running the Appalachian Trail when I happened to be in Tennessee with my family on vacation very nearby his location. When a complete ultrarunning civilian considers "running the AT,"I figure its just a path through the woods. This book was an homage to a journey that was so raw, guttural, and captivating that I realized that I had sold this man way too short. The descriptions of the terrain made me wonder how it was humanly possibly to cover that much ground. Not only is Scott Jurek an obviously decorated and proven runner, he's a pretty darn good writer, and from the gist of his writing, and the inferences of his personality in "Born to Run" (GREAT BOOK) he is every bit the champion he is. He internalized why every runner runs in the first place- to feel the sense of accomplishment, to try to reach for something better than you are right now, to add to the community and family that running embodies! I love it that he did this with his wife. What a great memory for the two of them. Thank you for sharing your story, would love to meet you someday!

Entertaining

As Scott decides to run the Appalachian Trail he and his wife Jenny take you on their journey with them. There are highs and so many lows. Friends show up to run with him and push him even when he is so tired he looks and feels like death. This was probably a four star read, but just as you were starting to feel like you are on the trail with them, they would go on a tangent story about one of the friends who joined them or the first time they were in the town they just entered. The tangents were usually entertaining or interesting, however It took awhile to get back on the path and just when it happened...tangent. Oh well, still an entertaining read.

One of the worst, self-centered

One of the worst, self-centered, self -absorbed , egomaniac journey I've ever read. "Wild " was a much better read.

Like the run, sometimes thrilling, sometimes a slog

I was impressed by the level of writing here. There is no "with" writer identified, as is usually the case with memoirs by athletes and other celebrities. I found the writing honest, direct, and without much of the empty platitudes and cliches that are par for such courses. Jurek's descriptions of his highs and lows (both physical and mental) were sharp. But, inevitably, such descriptions get repetitive over a forty-six day super-ultra-marathon. As I read, the same question kept dogging me: Why would anyone put themselves through such a thing? What was the point? Jurek asks himself the same question. Read the book to see if he answers it.
