This magical coloring book, by an award-winning artist, is a creative and wonderful reprise to your everyday responsibilities.
What is a Nisse?
A Nisse is a mischievous domestic gnome, which cares for and protects a specific farmstead or home dwelling. This mythological creature from Scandinavian folklore is often associated with the Christmas season and is considered the Scandinavian version of Santa Claus. He is most commonly described as looking like an older man, very small in size with a beard and red cap. In modern Norway, Nisse are sometimes seen as beardless but still always with the trademark red cap. They are often pictured watching over a home, keeping eyes on the children, or bringing gifts.

Not as many Nisse as expected
I was expecting a coloring book full of nothing but Nisse; however, the second half of the book is dedicated to Rosemåling. Being Scandinavian I appreciate Rosemåling, but I was really hoping the entire book would be images of Nisse. The images of the Nisse are quite cute and will be fun to color. Not sure what I will do with the second half of the book?
Cute for Scandinavian Folklore
I really like that this coloring book stayed true to what the artists hoped for. The images can be a little confusing to color until you get the hang of it. The Nisse in the first half are kind of simplistic, which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for, but the swirls of Rosemaling that were added to each image make it a much more intricate page. The second half of the book is dedicated to the Rosemaling that I used to find on my great grandmother's hope chest. Overall, nice book if you enjoy taking your time and using creativity to make something like this come to life. My only complaint would be that I wish the Nisse had as much intricacy and detail as the Rosemaling.
Absolutely Adorable
This book is cute beyond words. There is a lovely mixture of large and smaller areas to color. It's detailed and intricate without being overly complicated and the lines are just beautiful. Plus the subject matter is one you dont find too often. I can't wait to color in the gnomes!
Adorable Nisse pictures
About half the illustrations are Nisse pictures. The rest are of rosemaling. There is a combination of more simple designs along with more detailed designs which I appreciate. Sometimes you just want a quick picture to color. The Nisse illustrations are overlaid on rosemaling designs. Once you complete those, you can redo many of them in the rosemaling section. The Nisse section is definitely my favorite part of the book because they are so cute!
Super Adorable!
Love this coloring book and can't wait to get started on it! I have always been fascinated with folk lore from around the world and just had to add this one to my collection when I saw it! The pages range from cute simple drawings to more elaborate ones so I am sure I'm going to have hours of fun working on them. If you love Christmas or just folklore in general you cant go wrong with this book!
It’s a unique folklore coloring book.
If you want to introduce Scandinavian folklore into your favorite child or teens life then this is a fun and imaginative way to do it. The pictures are detailed and unique and will provide hours of enjoyment. I suggest buying 2. One for yourself so that you can have fun being a kid again and one for your favorite kiddo. I would recommend a set of coloring pencils.
