The star of The Incredible Dr. Pol shares his amusing, and often poignant, tales from his four decades as a vet in rural Michigan.

Dr. Jan Pol is not your typical veterinarian. Born and raised the Netherlands on a dairy farm, he is the star of Nat Geo Wild’s hit show The Incredible Dr. Pol and has been treating animals in rural Michigan since the 1970s. Dr. Pol’s more than 20,000 patients have ranged from white mice to 2600-pound horses and everything in between.

From the time he was twelve years old and helped deliver a litter of piglets on his family’s farm to the incredible moments captured on his hit TV show, Dr. Pol has amassed a wealth of stories of what it’s like caring for this menagerie of animals. He shares his own story of growing up surrounded by animals, training to be a vet in the Netherlands, and moving to Michigan to open his first practice in a pre fab house. He has established himself as an empathetic yet no-nonsense vet who isn’t afraid to make the difficult decisions in order to do what’s best for his patients—and their hard-working owners. A sick pet can bring heartache, but a sick cow or horse could threaten the very livelihood of a farmer whose modest profits are dependent on healthy livestock.

Reminiscent of the classic books of James Herriot, Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow is a charming, fascinating, and funny memoir that will delight animal lovers everywhere.

Very Real and True to life, and death. A Country Vet telling as it is.

Dr Pol doesn't mess with words, he tells it as it is. Life is not fair, nor is it easy and being a large animal vet is hard work and requires difficult decisions. This is not like his show, instead it is an inside look to his thoughts and how he does his job.I enjoyed reading his blunt and realistic thoughts and ideas. Indeed there are some funny stories as well as some tough stories that hit close to home. I highly recommend this book, but caution the reader that this is real life and death country vet life. Don't expect a gentle and soft life, expect reality.

Drl Pol At His Best

At first I was leary about getting this book. I love the show The Incredible Dr. Pol so much that I was worried that the book might be done by some ghost writer and I wouldn't like it. I just couldn't figure out how Dr. Pol would have time to write a book. I was greatly surprised. Read this book is like what I would imagine an evening with Dr Pol must be like. Him telling you all about his life as a vet. To me even though I don't know the Pol's it was like sitting down with an old friend. The book has great stories and commentary and I loved it. My only complaint is the book is too short. lol. If you watch the show, you won't be disappointed, if you don't watch the show, you won't be disappointed. I feel that most people will love this book.

Wonderful, easy, and fascinating read

I flew through this book, and I don’t think I’m that fast of a reader so that’s saying something. The book is written as if you feel like Dr. Pol is speaking directly to you. There are so many lessons to be learned from this man, and I wish the book was 10x longer. No doubt he has an insane amount of stories he has left out due to length. Dr. Pol is not just a rare gem in the vet world, but just in the world in general. This is not a fuzzy, feel-good perspective on his career and life. He gets down to all angles (good, bad, ugly, funny, gross, emotional, touching, terrifying, surprising, frustrating...you name it). I appreciated all of the different stories and angles that allowed me to gain quite a bit of perspective. The perspective of the rural farmer, the rural vet, the WW2 Netherlands rural life (during and post), the old school vet education. I also loved that Dr. Pol always tried to do right by the owner and animal in so many ways. It’s truly a testament to his character. This may be a shorter and quicker read but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in any way! I’d give this book to anyone and everyone I know...and I will more than likely be rereading this soon!

Entertaining and Great Read

I stumbled upon this book due to my previous book interests and it wasn’t until I started reading that I realized he was on a TV show. After reading the book, I would love to watch the show since I quite enjoyed the book. It was interesting, informative, and entertaining. It flowed well and never seemed to lag. It was a great veterinary documentary although my favorite is still James Herriot. I really enjoyed this book though and was disappointed when I read through it so fast because the stories were all so interesting! He seems like one of the family!

I watch The Incredible Dr. Pol show all the time, and I thought it would be interesting to read his story. I learned lots of facts I didn't know about both small and large animals and watching the show helped to understand some of the animal conditions described in the book. I learned some interesting facts like dogs have many more blood types than humans, and it is rare for cows to have twins. What I liked most about the book though, was not the stories about the animals, but the stories about Dr. Pol and his family. Learning about how Dr. Pol grew up during WWII in Europe was quite interesting. He came here from the Netherlands and followed the American Dream. Dr. Pol came to America as an exchange student and stayed for a lifetime. He got married, started his own business in his garage with his wife, and they've worked side by side ever since. Now over 40 years later, he truly is living the American Dream. Many of his qualities remind me of my grandfather: Never be afraid of hard work, never give up, find a job you love; treat others as you want to be treated (even animals), stay grounded, and it's great to be young at heart. If you are interested in animals or if you like reading about hard working people who came to America and became a success story, this book is worth the read.

Fun Read But Book Suffers from Poor Editing

I liked reading the background stories of Dr. Pol and enjoy his show. I gave it 3 stars for the poor editing. This book must have been quickly put together and from what I can tell was done so from verbal interviews. As an editor who has ghost written several books, this one certainly didn't get the structure and editing it needed. A lot of jumping around, stream of thought, and repeated content. Dr. Pol deserved a better editor but then again, Dr. Pol is a vet first and I doubt book writing, however it is accomplished, is a top priority for him. If you're a fan it's worth the read, just try to find it used and save your cash for other books.

Best vet in town.

Couldn't put the book down. Tells about Dr. Pol's experiences with his clients, animals and employees. What a great vet. Loved his sense of humor and his caring concern for all animals. Wish we had more vets like him. His knowledge is incredible and such a humble man. Yes, watch his show every week. Have learned so much about caring for animals. He has a God-given insight in the care for animals. What an enjoyable read. Please read this book.

It was a wonderful read that I would strongly recommend to all of ...

My family never misses an episode of "Dr. Pol!" Although I purchased one of these books for my daughter & a 2nd for my son's girlfriend (who's in college studying to become a Vet Tech, then ultimately, a Vet) I snatched my daughter's copy & read it before her. It was interesting & enlightening. It was a wonderful read that I would strongly recommend to all of his loving viewers, as well as his critics--perhaps then they would partially understand his personal methods through his foundational training. The rest of that 'understanding,' and 'appreciation,' if you will, could come from spending adequate time serving in communities like mine & Dr. Pol's, where dairy & animal farming provide an unreliable income by which one MUST remain PROFITABLE in order to support your family. This is a LIVLIHOOD and as much as you would prefer to save every single animal's dignified life, you can only do the very best you can to do exactly that, while at the same time balancing a BUSINESS. Dr. Pol's years of hands-on experience provides INVALUABLE to such farmers, who sadly, simply cannot afford all of the wondrous tests modern science offers. Dr. Pol offers understanding of his methods & training, all the time presenting it with his signature mixture of humility & humour. I adore this Vet and his family; I highly recommend this book as an entertaining, enlightening, easy read for interested, open-minded individuals! The seller sent me 2 brand new, well packaged novels, as described, in a swift, well-appreciated manner. I highly recommend this book and this seller.

If you know Dr Pol you'll read this book like you're listening to him speak!

I've followed Dr Pol's TV show and have a great admiration for his "old school" logic and deep respect and love for animals of all kinds, sizes, shapes and species. He embodies everything good about people of character and strong work ethic and is the kind of family man the our current society needs. I've listened to him on his show so often that I seemed to "Listen" to his book. Same words, same style, same humor. It's a great read and reveals some of the things not shown nor brought on on TV, especially more insight into his family and their values. We can't choose our family but if we could...my family would include the incredi-POL doctor and his. Laughed out loud so many times I'm keeping this book close by for the "down days" when I need a smile. Warning though...you may just wind up considering an Emu or two as your next family addition.

READS LIKE TALKING TO A FRIEND. ALL GOOD.

IF YOU LIKE TO READ A BOOK, AS IF YOU ARE SITTING AROUND TALKING TO THAT PERSON IN A RELAXING, LAID-BACK MANNER, AS IF THEY ARE TALKING DIRECTLY TO YOU, THIS IS YOUR BOOK. QUICK AND EASY READ. I LOVE DR POL. WOULD HAVE LIKED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS GROWING UP YEARS AND FAMILY, DURING THE WAR YEARS IN THE NETHERLANDS; SEEMED LIKE HE HAD AN INTERESTING LIFE. A VERY GOOD BOOK.

Great book for Dr. Pol fans

We're big fans of Dr. Pol. This book brings Dr. Pol straight to you. Its written just like he talks. Its filled with numerous informative and humorous stories. Its an easy read. If you like Dr. Pol, the TV show, you'll also enjoy Dr. Pol, the book.

like a conversation with Dr

Dr. Pol's son Charles summed it up well: like a conversation with Dr. Pol. I read the book almost in one sitting. This is one I will keep on my shelves and re-read. Dr. Pol is so much like two or three veterinarians that have helped my animals over my close to 80 years with animals that it also brings up fond memories of those fine vets. I just wish today's young veterinarians were going to practice in the same way these great vets did and Dr. Pol still does. I'm grateful to Dr. Pol for agreeing to allow his life to become a hit on Nat Geo Wild and for writing this book.

Excellent pleasure reading.

A fund quick read. I could hear Dr. Pol's voice speaking every line. It's like watching his show without commercials. Many of the stories are directly from the show, but there are new things as well and all are told with his direct style. He gives extra details, some behind the scenes information and explains so many of the issues he's telling you about. Oh my gosh! I loved it :D

A Life Worth Living

I have watched THE. INCREDIBLE DR. POL almost from the start. I LOVE his down to Earth, straight forward approach. He reminds me a little bit of a vet I had in New England. He's compassionate for #1 the animals and #2 the owners and #3 practical for each situation. I wish he was my vet although I have a great vet for my horses, dogs and cats where I am. His life story is well worth the read. His adventures are better than any movie on the big screen - I don't care for horror movies with human blood and gore. This is my style. I received the book the day before yesterday, looked at the first few pages and knew I was going to love it. As I am sick with a cold, I had nothing else really to do anyway so I started it yesterday morning and finished it last night. I couldn't put it down. Kudos to you Dr. Pol ! When you finally tire of putting your hand up cows' butts, there's a career for you in sit-down comedy (you deserve to sit rather than stand). You could really pack 'em in !!! Kudos to Charles for coming up with the idea and most of all Kudos to Diane for being his soulmate and support for all these decades ! I had a wonderful friend who lived to be 101 ½ tell me "I've lived a fulfilled life". Dr. Pol, you're still living it but I think you can claim the same !

My kind of people

I'm prejudice I guess, but, I love Dr Pol. I even went so far as to drive to his clinic and pose for a picture next to the sign seen so often on TV. I spent most of my life around farm animals, and I've seen almost everything that can be seen about cows, chickens, pigs, the whole lot. So, I don't watch the show or read the book to learn about animals. Instead, the attraction for me is the people involved. Having grown up in a farm culture, I recognize them as people that I know, or at least FEEL like I know them. This book gives insight into that rural culture and the good people that make up that life style. It just goes to show that ordinary people can be world famous for being just ordinary people........and it's refreshing.

Fabulous

I have been a huge fan of his National Geographic channel show, for a couple of years. His show is interesting, in the variety of issues he addresses with the animals he treats, but I certainly love his no-nonsense approach, and that he has such enthusiasm and compassion for all the animals he treats. I used to be an animal control officer, and I can certainly relate with his advice on how animals give you hints with their behavior. I used to use that to my advantage with catching stray dogs. I love his show, and certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves animals.

Interesting but Rambling

I have never seen Dr. Pol on TV, but my family talks about him all the time so I felt like I needed to get the book. There are a lot of fun and interesting stories, sort of organized in sections, but in reality there is no organization. I think they just set a recorder in front of Dr. Pol and let him talk for a few hours. The book is mostly the transcription of that recording. It is NOTHING like the All Creatures books, other than that they are both about country vets. I found it a little difficult to finish due to the rambling narrative.

Rich material poor style

The book has an appeal for fans of the Dr Pol show as he is definitely an interesting character with many stories to tell. However, the writing itself leaves a lot to be desired as it is flat, repetitive, and jumps around in a disconnected fashion within the narrative. Also be warned there are many graphic and gruesome descriptions of medical conditions. If you enjoy the Dr Pol show and have an interest in veterinary practice then it is still worth reading, despite it's shortcomings.

Incredible!

Dr. Pol is, sometimes, blunt but very honest. This isn't an autobiography in which he tells all about his life, from his childhood 'til now. Instead, he talks about what it's been like for him personally as a large animal vet and some of the things that he's learned along the way. They're not all good stories with happy endings, but then again this is not a book with fairytales. While I know that not everyone agrees with Dr. Pol's methods, I personally enjoyed the book.

Makes you appreciate life and all of the wonders in it

This is such a good read! It's like Dr. Pol himself is talking to you....it's written in his style of speech and it's comfortable and familiar. He touches on some of his cases and the lessons he has learned from both man and beast. My only complaint: it's too short! There are some wonderful and powerful messages about love and simple joys in this book.

Great! Just like Dr Pol is

He’s what all vets should be, ie willing to treat any animal that comes in the door. I understand some splitting into small or large, especially in town, but most town vets just want dogs and cats- period! I like Dr Pols attitude that he’s an animal Dr and any sick animal deserves care. The book is fun and heartbreaking. It’s an insight to a way of life few of us will ever know. Bless you for writing such a great book. More to come perhaps?

Yes, He is incredible!!!

What a wonderful life you have led. I really enjoyed reading your story. Without a doubt you truly care for animals but it's the compassion you have for not just them but for their owners is what sets you apart from many vets. I watch the show religiously and a loyal fan. Thank you for being a champion for all animals. Sincerely, Debora Seifert.

Reading this book is like watching his show, you will love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can one possibly say anything bad about Dr. Pol? NEVER! He sounds like your best uncle that has been in your family for forever. I love watching his programs, I have seen them from the very first episode, and I love them all. Years ago James Herriot, had books out and also a tv program, which everyone enjoyed. In this day and age, and all the crime, it's a pleasure to see a very good lite hard show. Hopefully the show will be on for a very long time. Love him!!!!!

Warm and Wonderful

If you love the show, you will adore the book. You feel like you are sitting at the kitchen table with Jan Pol having a cheerful, real, down-to- earth conversation about life and veterinary practice. Dr Pol is so genuine, so delightful that you just can't help but love him. As Jan says, "If you don't try you never win". Highly recommended for the wisdom, warmth and caring it offers.

Incredible? Why yes...yes he is!

I've watched the show from the beginning. It was very informative to get the back story to the show...for instance, learning that Charles is actually the one that came up with the idea of this reality show. This book was never boring. It keeps your interest, and I have to say knowing Dr Pol's character from the show....I was not disappointed to see his unique and fun character show itself through the pages of this book. I recommend this book to those who've seen the show....those who have not. And if you are one of those people who have criticized him for his methods...the last chapter is for you. People don't always agree...it's the way it is. But one thing I do know...this man has a wonderful heart....a good soul. I have no doubt he loves the animals. I am grateful and delighted that Dr Pol and Mrs Pol, Charles, Dr Brenda and all the staff at Dr Pol's animal clinic have allowed us a peak into their "Incredible" lives. Thank you!!

Fills In the Gaps Nicely

Very enjoyable. Seems just like he is on TV. You learn how he was "discovered" for TV and more about his son, Charles. And, it sounds as though there are more vets working for him and more Jeeps in his garage than you see on TV. I agree with another reviewer who said the book needs a little more editing. There were several times when the same phrase showed-up several times within a couple of pages. I also liked reading about his early life in the Netherlands and how he got to the U.S. My only real complaint is the poor quality of printing on the dustjacket. I had ink all over my first copy--on the endflaps and around the front and back. Even ink from someone's fingers on the top of the closed pages. I complained to Amazon and they sent another copy that was only marginally better. Still had ink splattered all over.

A great read

For anyone who's a fan of the TV show The Incredible Dr Pol, or who remembers all of James Herriot's All Creatures Great or Small books - or who just plain loves critters of all kinds - this is a great read. Dr Pol is one of those people I'd like to spend hours talking with. He's blunt, honest, witty and kind and this book reflects that.

Fantastic read

As a veterinarian with 35yrs of practise under my belt, Dr Pol’s book is a beautifully written, insightful and often funny book that covers the honest, unglamorous and at times brutal reality of veterinary work. May you live long and prosper, Dr. Pol!

Entertaining and informational

I've watched The Incredible Dr. Pol for several years now, and I have always been interested in him and his practice. I was intrigued and bought the book, and I read it entirely too fast; it was just too enjoyable. It is full of veterinary information, like how to pack a vets car, tools and medicines commonly used, and treatment of patients. At the same time, you get anecdotes of Dr. Pol, his family and his friends and clients, which is what I was excited about reading. I would recommend this book to any animal lover, anyone who enjoys the tv show, and/or anyone wishing to enter into a career with animals.

Have you seen his programs?

You have to be interested in large animal farming to enjoy this book. And, it would be helpful if you have seen any of his t.v. programing of his vet practice. Some if it is hard to read because of the animal content, but he surely knows large vet care!

Stitches

Dr. Pol had me in stitches...laughing, that is. Wonderful read. I recommend this book to anyone who shares a love for animals and a sense of self sacrifice in their relationships with others. It gives you a sense of what it was like growing up in the German-occupied Netherlands in WWII and the adventure of moving to our country to experience the American dream. Finally, I was moved by Dr. Pol's narrative describing his love for his wife and how the show helped solidify his relationship with his son, Charles.

Great book great read, excellent !!

Love this book it was just like Dr. Pol was talking directly to me. I'm obsessed with the show and all the cast members, it's nice to know about Dr. Pol on a personal level. Great read I went through this book pretty fast!!

Now it's Dr. Brenda's turn to write a book!!

This book is just like an extended version of the show, but here we also get those "behind the scene" details and thoughts that can't always be caught on camera. I loved getting to read the chronological information on how Dr. Pol ended up where he is today and why he thinks the way he does. Like other reviewers have said, I could hear Dr. pol's voice in my head saying the words as I read them. My only disappointment is that I want more! Now it's Dr. Brenda's turn to write a book!! Seriously, if anyone can recommend any books that are anywhere near as good as this one, I'd appreciate it.

Loved this book!

I went to college wanting to be a vet, but got deterred by how difficult it was to get in (turns out I wasn't able to pass Physics anyways so it wouldn't have mattered anyways) and became a nurse. I'm still enamored with all things veterinary and especially large animal practice. Growing up on James Herriot books, I've always had a love of animals and finding Dr. pol's show as an adult was awesome. The book is like the show: it's funny, it's sad, it's thrilling, and heartwarming. Best of all, though, is the amount of pride he has in his work (as well as of his colleagues at the clinic) and the love for all kinds of animals....it just makes me so happy!

Loved this book!

Loved this book! There were lots of individual stories which were very interesting. Couldn't put it down! I am hoping for another book by this same author. I have never watched the TV show, but now I would like to see it.

Dr. Pol has done it again!

I love watching Dr. Pol's television show and this book really is written exactly the way he speaks. It fun, entertaining and fast reading.

A Great Book To Read

If you like watching Dr. Jan Pol on TV? Reading about his life growing up as a boy and got into training to be a Vet, coming to America and meeting Diane, getting married and starting their Vet Clinic. I have enjoyed reading every bit of the book :)

Those who are fans of the show won't be disappointed. In fact

Outstanding read that I just couldn't put down. Those who are fans of the show won't be disappointed. In fact, I was sad when I finished it because I wanted more! What an amazing man and vet. I can really feel his experiences through his eyes as I read. LOVED it.

I wish all bets were like this !

Such a great story and good lessons here on insights to the animals and respect for “ old school” remedies or treatments that work - and ethical principles needed for honest recommendations to pet owners

So interesting!

I thought this book was pretty good. I want to actually rate this 4.5. I love to watch his show but I no longer get the station. However I am thrilled that he is now on Netflix! If you have seen his show, the book is no different. He mentions plenty of stories to keep the reader interested. The book doesn't leave out any of the personal wording that Dr. Pol uses on his TV show. The main concept that I got from the book was how much he loves animals and to treat animals with respect. *Per my Goodreads review

Dr. Pol is the best!

Thoroughly enjoy Dr. Pol on TV and his book was super also. He's an interesting person with a great sense of humor. And I was intrigued to learn he is only about 40 miles from where I grew up in MIchigan.

Mirrors his tv shows

I’m a great fan of Dr. Pols and was anxious to read his book. It had background on his practice that you don’t see on the show. My husband never read a book in his life and I told him to just pick a page or two and read it. He’s reading the whole book.

What a ride!!!!

One of the best walks down memory lane I have ever had. If you have watched the show you can pick out the cases you have seen on the show in the book. I heartily recommend reading this book.

Love his tv show? Read his book.

I love the tv show, The Incredible Dr. Pol. The book is even better. His writing is just like he sounds on TV. If you like reading about compassionate people, Dr. Pol is the person to read about.

Good read.

Been watching tv show since I accidentally discovered it on National Geographic. Though very well written and very interesting, I would have liked to have read a little more about the family s personal life.

The Incredible Dr. Pol

I watch the TV show and loved the book as it gave some background into Dr. Pol's upbringing and education. Dr. Pol's stories are always interesting and I'm always amazed at the array of animals he will treat. Great book. I would recommend it to all who enjoy Dr. Pol and his stories.

Incredible Dr. Pol

If you watch and enjoy Dr. Pol you will love this book.Well put together with lots of laughs and an interesting insight to the man himself, his outlook and his life

Great book about Dr. Pol and his life

Great book. Enjoyed learning more about Dr. Pol's life and his practice. His intelligence and wit come through like you were having a conversation with him. Very entertaining.

For Dr Pol fans

If you watch the Incredible Dr Pol, this book is for you. It is an endearing look at the beginnings of Pol Veterinary Clinic, and of Doc Pol himself. It is a bit repetitious, but is forgivable. I never noticed him saying "Never turn your back on an Angus cow" until reading this book. He says it frequently on the show!

If you like the TV show, you will love this book.

There was nothing I didn't like. The book gives much more information about Jan growing up in the Netherlands, his schooling, how he met Diane, their family life, etc.

A must read for Dr.Pol lovers

After reading this book, you will admire this man even more.

Five Stars

Love Amazing Dr. Pol and this is a continuation of what his life has been like.

My 10 year old loved it!

My 10 year old daughter aspiring to be a vet loved it! She wants to get it signed in person, but we'll have to wait until this virus crisis is over.

The incredible Doc Pol does it again!

If you love his show, you will love his book. He tells about his childhood in the Netherlands, meeting Diane, beginning his own practice and how the show began. All the while he regaled the reader with stories both hilarious and poignant. A great read!

If you are a fan of the TV show, you'll enjoy the book.

It was written as though Dr. Pol was talking to you about his life. I did get a new understanding of the value of farm animals to their owners. I thought there was an overabundance of cow stories, but, they're a pretty substantial part of the practice I guess.

I wish this book were longer!

I am a great fan of Dr. Pol. This is such a good book about a remarkable man. I think I like it a bit better than James Herriot. Perhaps because it is so open and honest. It is well written and easy to read. A real treat!

Great for those interested in animal care

Bought this for my 11 year old for her birthday. She loves Dr. Pol's show and wanted this book. She read it within a few days and loved it.

Great book.

Excellent read. Shipping was a bit...slow-ish... But book was better than advertised condition-wise, and a very entertain read about Dr. Pol and his life. Worth it.

Great book

This book is seriously a god-sent. My son absolutely hates to read and he literally picked this and hooked up and ready on his own and then was so excited or what he read came and told me everything he read and that chapter dr. Pol is on the his biggest role models

Great Animal Medical Cases

I liked the challenging health problems faced by Jan Pol and how he solved them. I also liked his advocacy for the humane treatment of animals.

THIS A TEN STAR BOOK!!!!

WOW!!! The book was written like Dr. Pol and I were sitting in his kitchen as friends and having a cup of coffee. And he was talking about his experiences over the years as a vet. The book was so well written. All his stories just flowed so well together. I could feel his love for animals so much that it made since when he always said, "NEVER GIVE UP!", and he never gave up. You have to read this book!

Excellent book. Realistic and fascinating

I randomly found this book when searching for gifts. I purchased it and read it myself before gifting it. I could hardly put it down! Excellent book. Realistic and fascinating.

Fun read.

While I read this, I 100% heard Dr. Pol's voice. It is written as if you are walking alongside him while he's telling you his story. Often repeated himself but still a great read.

Love Dr. Pol

Just love Dr. Pol. This was a great book learning all about his early days as a child and how he was lead to his practice in MI.

If you like the show you will like the book.

If you like the show you will like the book. In many ways, the way it is written feels like you are having dinner with Dr. Pol, and he is telling you about his life first hand. There were even times I could just imagine him speaking the lines in the book with his accent, and in that brisk style he demonstrates on TV. The book is easy fast paced reading, and while it may not be an indepth account of his life, its interesting enough to hold one's attention.

Great Book from a Great Doc!

I love, love, love Dr Pol. We watch him every Saturday night. I purchased this book for a girlfriend who has a hobby farm and might appreciate Dr Pol's stories. When we exchanged Christmas presents, the same girlfriend bought me a copy of the book. We've both read it and so has my husband. What's nice about it is that the book reads like you're sitting in the same room with Dr Pol having a conversation. It's easy to understand everything he's saying.

What fun!

I purchased this book because I am a fan of his TV show. This book was not only entertaining, but also informative. His clients, both owners and animals, are so lucky to have such a caring veterinarian.

Dr Pol

I enjoy watching his show on TV and I enjoyed reading his book. I like reading more personal aspects of his and his family’s life.

Truly Incredible

Great background for my favorite TV show. Interesting guy, and well written story. If you like the show you will love it.

Quite good

As others have noted, it is like Dr Pol is in the room talking to you. He talks about his veterinary philosophy, and experiences thru out his career with animals and people. A fun read! I hope he does another book.

This book made me happy

I was going through some tough personal issues when this book showed up on my kindle. I really enjoyed this rambling book. I'll have to read it again to see if the chapters actually make any sense or not (and I don't care if they do). It feels like the show. I'm guessing Dr Pol just started talking into a microphone and the writer got it all down. It sounds like Dr Pol wrote it himself so I'm impressed with the little editing that was probably done. My only complaint is that I wish it could have been longer - would have loved more stories and more details on some of the stories, but those of you that watch the show know Dr Pol can be very abrupt at times - when he doesn't want to talk any more about something he just stops. Ready for volume 2-10. At any rate, the book got me out of the funk I was in and I'll pick it up again each time I need a wonderful happy diversion in my life.

This is writen by a vet

I love the show so I purchased the book. He tells a little history about himself. He talks about a lot of things that happened in his life that got him where he is now

Wonderful Read!

Loved this book! Very well written, full of wit, wisdom, and humor. Great read, and highly recommend!

Great book!

I loved this book because Dr. Pol goes into much more detail than he does on the show. I have learned a great deal more about the man and his family.

Good Read

Have never watched his shows when he was on tv, but enjoyed the book. Did make me want to try and catch reruns if ever on any channels I subscribe to.

Dr pol

I have a disabled adult son that idealizes Dr Pol. He has learned so much from his So he absolutely loves the book.

Interesting country vet stories

I thoroughly enjoy Dr. Pol’s tv show, and reading this book is just like hearing him talk on the show. Many years and many experiences to draw upon for stories about the animals he helps.

Pol's Practice

This is a great book. VEry family oriented and informative. Dr. Pol is one fo my favorite TV shows

we love him. The book reads just like the show ...

Dr. Pol....we love him. The book reads just like the show is aired. Each chapter is a series of cases where Dr. Pol walks you thru his experiences. He tells his story in exactly the same why he appears on tv.......with his keen veterinarian insight and his humorous way of telling a story. Additionally he provides details of his childhood and the background on his education. It's light easy reading and a delightful story of his years as a veterinarian in Michigan. I really enjoyed the book!

Enjoyed every page

A book for animal lovers and those interested in medical procedures alike, as well as for those who want to know how Dr Pol's mind works. Fascinating, funny and sometimes sad.

TV Script Regurgitated

If you've watched Dr. Pol's TV series, you'll recognize most of the tales and script in this book. Nevertheless, the adventures of a country vet can be very colorful.

We love dr pol

We absolutely love dr pol, and my son is loving reading his book! You need this book!

Terrific read

After watching the show for so long I noticed several references to episodes I had seen, and it just brought the experience to life even more.after being owned by several animals during my lifetime, Dr. Pol reminded me of the reality animals bring to the lives of those who love them. And after reading everything written about James Herriot,I believe Dr. Pol must be our American counterpart.

Love this book!

Great book! Enjoyed reading a kind of behind the scenes of my favorite show as well as how his show came to be on the air!

He really is the Incredible Dr. Pol!!!

I just love Dr. Pol and this book is excellent! He has such a way with his words. My Kindle edition was a little messed up, tho, and the first five chapters weren't separated. I got 53% of the book done before there were individual chapters. No matter, it was still delightful! If you like the show, you'll love the book! Actually, you'll love the book even if you haven't seen the show!

Dr Pol and his team are great.

I really enjoyed this book and have watch his shows on TV many times even re-runs. Anything Dr. Pol does is with love for animals and their people. He is great training people how easily things can be done and not chargine people huge amounts so they can properly care for their animals.

Loved loved loved this boom

I have watched all of the episode of his tv series "the incredible Dr Pol" and I love it. This man has inspired me in so many ways and his book is a extension of himself, when you read this book you can hear him talking. He is funny yet blut and so passionate about his work!! Amazing read

I’m afraid we are losing dedicated people like Dr. Pol.

Wonderful book! Easy read and you can tell it is Dr Pol writing. His TV show is great too. A modern day Dr Harriet.

Great stories, easy read

This book is full of great stories! A great read especially if you love animals. If you watch dr. Poll's show you can hear his accent in your head as you read :)

Quick easy read

Short enjoyable reading. If you enjoy his show you will like the book.

Doc Pol is as honest as the day is long!

Dr Pol is as honest as the day is long! He loves what he does and it shows in his television series and his book. Being on television has not changed who Dr Pol is. He has remained grounded. He is willing to help any animal that needs medical attention. It’s great to know there are still honest and caring Vets still out there. Way to go Doc Pol!

I loved this book!!!

I discovered the TV show years ago & have watched it faithfully. I didn't even know there was a book. As soon as I discovered this book, I bought it & read it the same day. As I read, I could hear Dr Pol speaking the words. Absolutely wonderful!!

Fascinating Veterinary Care That Maybe Hard To Find Nowadays

Stumbled upon this book and couldn’t put it down , learned a lot while had lots of laughters ! Made me watch his show that I didn’t know about , as well.

I hear Dr. Pol's voice as I read.

This book totally goes along with the television show "The Incredible Dr. Pol". I'm a fan of the show which is why I bought the book. The added insight into the life of the Pol family is quite interesting and enjoyable. I'm so glad I bought this book.

Great Value

Purchased as a gift for a Dr. Pol fan...she enjoyed the book

Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow. Data.

I enjoyed this book very much. I gave details about Dr. Jan Pol's life. I found it informative and interesting. He is such a happy man and loves his job and the animals so much. I want to go to Michigan to visit him and his family. I too love animals.

A Wonderful Book!!!

I've watched the series and was thrilled to death when a book came out! So far it is very interesting. Anyone who is a fan of Dr. Pol will love this book. It's about his life as a vet and how he got started. I've learned a lot watching his show, and I strongly recommend the show AND this book too.

I think it most important to understand the love for animals that Dr. Pol has.

Love watching theTV show. It’s been an eye opener for an elderly lady from the city! The book added an interesting insight to Dr. Pol and staff.

Was so happy to receive this and read more on Dr. Pol's back ground. Thank You so much for sharing your life with us Dr. Pol. /salute from WA state.

Dr. Pol, My Favorite Vet

It was Great reading about this Wonderful Vet, and his Work @ Pol Vet, his 2 legged, and 4 legged ones! Loved the Characters, and Clients! Good Narrator. but missed Dr. Pol's "Voice!"

Love Dr. Pol

As I am reading this I can see and hear him talking. Well written. If you love the show, you'll love the book.

Great read!!

Great book!! I read it all in one sitting.

Decent book for animal lovers

I love the snow and am an avid animal lover. Great read, but it took me a long time to get through because it’s not the most interesting. I grew up with cattle, but if you didn’t, it might not make the most sense to you.

A Christmas Present 2019 for my wife

Very good book, great reading and value

Dr. Pol is beyond Awesome.

I need to find a primary care physician that is half as good as my favorite veterinarian, Doc Pol! The book is solid info and great stories.

A wonderful journey through a large animal vet's eyes

Warm and caring, funny and on point, this book was a comfortable read about Doctor Jan Pol's adventures in his veterinary practice. It was wonderful to learn about his past all the way to modern day. Fans will love it, try not to hear his accent as you read!

I loved it

Great book, just like the show, easy read.

I enjoy the TV show as well as his no nonsense

Interesting, well narrated audiobook, and provides some biography information about Dr. Pol. I enjoy the TV show as well as his no nonsense, practical approach to treating his patience. I was expecting a bit more in depth stories but the book is more snip-its of situations and his thoughts, reactions, and perspectives. Overall, a good book that I enjoyed and will listen to again.

Enjoyable read.

If you like the show you will enjoy the book.

Must have

Great book. I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he loves it.

This was so good. You would have to have been raised on ...

This was so good. You would have to have been raised on a farm, to appreciate a lot of the things he writes about. I saw the humor in a lot of the stories, but to some...it might gross them out.

Entertaining

Everyone loves Dr. Pol.

Love this book. Dr. Pol is an outstanding vet. Lots of laughs and knowledge in these pages.

Very inteesting

Got this book for my hubby and he has read it already and said it was very good. He said it was more like a bio of Dr. Pol.

Honest and humble

The book is like reading the script for the TV show. You enjoy the experience through his love for animals and his honesty with their owners.

Great book

Since I watch this show on tv....he writes the way he talks. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you love animals...this is the book to read.

Exactly as promised!

And I adore Dr. Pol. His sweet personality and dedication is amazing.

If you love Dr Pol you must have this book

Love Dr Pol! He is the James Herriot of the 21st century! Gifted it to my daughter in California

Not even done and giving five stars!!

I love Dr. Pol! I discovered his show through my mother in law and learned about some of his life story on a special Nat Geo Wild did about him. He is a true hard working man who loves BOTH his countries ❤️ A true inspiration to all and a great personality to match it!

just like thye television show

very entertaining

Great book about something I know very little about.

I rate this book highly because Dr. Poll so obviously cared about his animal clients in a way that makes life as a whole seem richer - especially when you know that these animals' lives end to feed people or otherwise serve people, that at least in this book, it seems that they are cared for in a good humane way. This is very important to me.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed reading his stories of the farm calls. As a former vet tech, it brought back memories. I have it 5 stars because I couldn't put the book down.

The book is GREAT. The book make you think you are sitting ...

The book is GREAT. The book make you think you are sitting with Jan, having a drink, and he is telling his life story. Having grown up on a dairy farm myself, and having considered becoming a vet myself, I can feel my 70+ year old self wondering..."What if?". Do not miss this book, if you like Dr. Pol!!!!

Great book!

I love everything about this book! Dr. Pol is such a good man. I would love for my dog and myself to meet him!

Five Stars

love his show - he is one of a kind!

Know the veterinarian better

Easy reading and entertaining as well. I like his TV show and the book gives more detail in his problem solving methods. I wish more veterinarians were as honest as Dr. Pol.

James Herriot Dr. Pol is not.

James Herriot Dr. Pol is not. But this book was entertaining. There were many times I laughed out loud and even got a little teary. I like Dr.Pol's view on things like euthanizing an animal and if I lived in Michigan I would have him as my vet.

Love Dr.Pol!

I really loved getting to know more about Dr. Pol, especially his growing up and early professional life! The World War II anecdotes were especially moving.

Great tales of the life of a rural veterinarian!

I am a huge fan of Dr. Pol and watch his show religiously. The book is essentially a retelling of the things that are shown on the show. Enjoyed reading it!

Not that funny

I'm a vet. But I couldn't get into it.

... for Christmas she loves the Dr Pol show she LOVED

Gave this to my mother for Christmas she loves the Dr Pol show she LOVED it

Pol's love of his job

What an Interesting Read Dr. Pol is a fascinating man who loves life and all animals. The book is full of interesting stories about a long and dedicated career. There is no doubt about Dr. Pol's love of his job, his animals and his clients. What a great guy.

Enjoyable Read

An easy to read book - Dr. Pol does not disappoint. It shows what a down to earth person he is. Good for any age to read.

Good read

Good book! Enjoyable read that gives good background information for people that watch the show. Kind of jumps around in subject and ideas but that really is the way Dr Pol's personality is; high energy and constantly on the go. If you enjoy the show, you will enjoy this book.

Compassion, thy name is Dr. Jan Pol

Gives an insight of a great guy and wonderful Veterinarian. If you haven't watched his show, you have missed a understanding, compassionate, family and their whole office staff that take care of all kinds of animals, birds, rodents, etc with love and great care. Loved the book and and insight on his character.

If you like the TV show

If you like the TV show, you will love the book! I really enjoyed learning about his time in vet school, how he met Diane, what it was like as a young vet starting out in this country and how he built his own practice. Now I want Volume II !

Recommend

Great read

Great book

My animal obsessed 11 yr old is enjoying reading this book.

I love the TV series

I love the TV series. The audio book falls a little flat because the reader lacks the outgoing cadence that Dr. Pol's own voice would have. I wish Dr. Pol had read it aloud himself. I think reading the book would be 5 star. It had interesting stories.

Entertaining

Told me everything I wanted to know about Dr. Pol!

Wonderful

I choose this rating because this book was a wonderful read. Dr. Pol is the type of vet I use to have. I have a good one now. Dr Pol is a very compassionate towards not only his patients, but to the humans involved. A high bar, indeed.

Wow, and I just though he was awesome. Now I know it is so.

Off all the movie stars, singers, poets, etc. The one I wish I could meet most would be Dr. & Mrs. Pol. I love the show, but personally loved the book just as much. Wish I could at least get a signed copy from the great staff and the Pols also. Guess on My short bucket list. Thanks to all who made show and book possible. Especially Charles.

Great read!

Excellent read! Dr. Pol is a fantastic vet who I wished I could take all of my animals to!

The Life of A Vet

Anyone from a dog owner, to a inspiring vet will benefit from reading this book. Loved all of the stories he told about how his life as a vet has progressed throughout the years. Also, I watch his show, The Incredible Dr Pol, and it's nice to get some background knowledge about who he really is.

Dr. Pol is a true honest Veterinarian.

Dr. Pol is from my "neck of the woods". I was raised in Mecosta county. Love the show and love the book. It is graphic but not any more than the show. After all it's about being a veterinarian, life and death the process of life. Dr. Pol lays it on the line and is very honest with his clients. In this day and age when some vets will take advantage of you because they know that we will do anything for our pets he won't allow suffering to make a buck. Now on my next trip "home" I hope to have my book signed. Love you Dr. Pol and all your honesty and thank you letting me come into your life and your home through tv.

I enjoyed his humor

I'm prejudiced watching the TV version for so long. I enjoyed his humor, his forthrightness and his ability to make me feel I was there with him. It was a good read in every way.

It was a joy to read this book

My gosh, what a story! It was a joy to read this book, and I have shared it with family members who are loving it, too. Dr. Pol is a gem, and his story is told in a fun, easy-to-read format. We love The Incredible Dr. Pol!

Never Turn Your Back On An Angus Cow

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Being raised on a farm and farming myself, I found a lot of things I could relate to in the book and I also Learned a lot. I recommend this book to all who enjoy animals.

Inspiration

I'm twelve and I just finished this book. I watch the show (on Nat Geo Wild) and its like the story was put in words and written down. The stories are all told by Dr.pol. He also talked about his life in the Netherlands and how he grew up and how he learned about veterinary medicine.

Love Dr Pol!

Entertaining and informational - well written auto bio of a fascinating man.

Dr. Pol as he really is

I have watched all of the Dr. Pol show so when I saw this book, I knew I had to read it. I heard Dr. Pop's accent as I read. This book is great! It is very informative and parts are very funny. I recommend this to all who love animals. Dr. Pol is a real person in a real world full of love and compassion for life.

Love Dr Pol! Great book!

We love Dr Pol on TV so were very excited to see he has a book with the additional audible book. It is a very interesting and entertaining!

From the heart

Great book! Dr. Pol writes the way he talks: right from the heart.

Interesting stories

Great book! Love Dr. Pol

Good read

I love the show and the book explains how Dr. Pol became the Incredible Dr. Pol. Interesting and fun read.

Fun & Fast read. Highly recommended

Such a great book. Funny and informational. I love Dr. Pol and his Vet family. And his immediate family as well. I highly recommend this great read. 😉😉

Funny and interesting!

Funny and interesting!

Gotta love Dr.Incredible!

Reading Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow is exactly like watching the show. Lots of detail, lots of humor. I love Dr.Pol and his staff. I didn't think twice about ordering this book. I was so anxious for the New season to start..I needed a Dr. Pol fix. The book is just what "The Doctor" ordered. I finished it just in time.. Charles is adorable! The book goes into detail about Dad and Sons relationship. It wasn't always as it seems on the show..I guess Charles was an "A" typical teen ..just to discover thru working together they enjoy each other's company.. I admire and respect the good Doctors ethics and manner of working on all animals. He comments the he doesn't agree with the term for "bad humans" to be refered to as animals...he refers to a sad passage regarding a pit bull mothering an infant. The unfortunate misunderstanding that led Dr Pol to become an advocate for pitbuls. Read the book! There is so much to learn about treatment of all animals large or small. Thank you Doctor for making available all your knowledge. Always pack your sense of humor ..I wish I could work for you..I'd clean stalls for free! All my best to you and your awesome family/staff

More of Dr Pol

Love watching him on tv and have enjoyed the book

Surpassed expectations!

This book was like sitting in a room and listening to Dr. Pol tell his life experiences or watching a series of his TV programs!! Wish I could get my copy signed.

The Incrediabe Dr Pol is right!

If you watch the show or want to be a large animal vet, this should be mandatory reading/listening.

Incredible!

We watch the show and really enjoyed the back story. My husband seldom reads but loved this book.

Dr Pol

Almost like watching the show. I could recognize some of the animals on the tv show through Dr Pol’s descriptions

awesome

what a great vet.

Good book

It was a gift for my sister, so I didn't have time to read it all. It was not written as well as "All Creatures...". It was not as structured, events seemed just strung together. Still an interesting book. Maybe my sister will give it to me for next Christmas.

Great read!

Read this for fun and loved it. Details of his practice and how he got started.

Great Book!

I love watching Dr. Pol, so I decided to read his book. I enjoyed learning more about his family's history and how he back a Vet. When reading I could hear him say everything with his wonderful accent:). Thank for a fun and interesting book!!
