Joel Sartore is absolutely the best, letting us look every creature in the eye and reminding us what we stand to lose with species extinction. I’m adding his new book to my Photo Ark collection and going to the zoo to take a closer, more appreciative look at the animals.

This is one you really do want to keep on the coffee table. Everyone reaches for it. Good gift book.

Saw in 60-minutes that the author travels around the world to take pictures of these animals, many of them are rare and endangered. Really good quality portraits for these animals, hence the title Photo Ark. It's worth keeping a hard copy to remind us how beautiful the world is.

A really an amazing book filled with a wonderful record of wondrous animals. Really fantastic photographs of beautiful animals. I bought one for my daughter, another for my nephew and one for myself. This is a special book. We will all enjoy and like use as reference when painting and illustrating

Having gotten the Photo Ark book, this was the perfect complimentary book. This book is going to be a Christmas gift for a niece and nephew who love animals and will appreciate this book and the importance of its content being vulnerable and endangered species. These books are high quality and very well manufactured. They do not disappoint at all, in both design and quality of content.

OUR world is in the Sixth Extinction on this earth since the world was born 3.4 millions of years ago. We are losing the current animals that we grew up with and knew since we were little. Thank God that Joel Satore documents each animal with its 'beautiful' pictures. Our chain of life is also affected. Life as we know it is starting to end. One part of the chain is under attack (elephants, lions, all the animals), we lose them we will lose civilization and us with that. What else can we destroy while we are living on this precious earth?

Bote this for my day spa lobby reading. Photos are stupendous and critters and animals capture ones heart leaving you breathless knowing such awesome creatures share this planet with us. We humans need to stop some of our insanity and remember this earth has other beings besides just humans.

If you love animals, you'll love this book. The photographer does an amazing job of catching human-like emotions in the high-quality photos of the animals. Be sure you have a good place to put this book, as it's quite large and heavy. It's a great coffee table book.

Such a wonderful book! I have been following the Photo Ark for a couple of years. Being able to see clear, close up pictutes of all sorts of animals is a treasure. Especially considering that some are litterally on the edge of extinction.

The photographs are beautiful, the information is fascinating, and I was super surprised to find out the cover photo is actually one of the panthers from the zoo I work at! A great look into a mass extinction happening right under our noses.

The book pictures are spectacular. Each picture has a bio of the animals. This is so huge, it took 2 days to get through the book. Fabulous, it should be part of educational curriculum.

The pictures were gorgeous. Some made my heart hurt and other made me smile.

This was a Christmas gift for my 7-year-old niece who wants to be a veterinarian. She and her entire family have looked at this book so many times since Christmas. It is a celebration of the animals of this earth as well as a tribute to the photographer.

We purchased everyone of the ark series after seeing the author create these gorgeous images on a special presented by our local PBS station. Joel's books are a work of patience, generosity and love. We have given the books, as well, to our grandchildren who pour over the pages of Joel's photographs again and again.

Just extraordinary pictures. I have one of the annual books by Nat. Geo. and have really enjoyed it. I use the photos for my art work. The photos are crisp and colorful.

It seemed like someone ate food and looked through this book. There was small yuk on cover and inside the book a few pages in. I didn't know what it was so I sprayed Lysol and also wiped with Clorox wipes. Kinda creepy. Wish I didn't have to remove the covers but the hardbacks are in great shape. Sorry guys. I don't think this was the drivers fault.

This book is straight up depressing. As you turn the pages, you are continuously reminded of how man has mangled the Earth and devastated one animal after another. Getting through the Ghosts section will make you sad. The following sections will make you mad. If the purpose is to motivate the reader, they pulled that off. Each page has large color photos, with a description of why the animal is endangered or lost forever. There is one page in particular that is going to hit hardcore Disney fans in the chest. Yes, I said Disney fans. On page 43 you will find the preserved body of a Dusky Seaside Sparrow. It was a bird that man wiped off the face of the Earth. They didn't mean to, but in an effort to control mosquitoes, they devastated the habitat of this bird. This particular bird has a name - Orange Band. He was the last of his kind. He lived out his final days on Discovery Island in Walt Disney World. I'd heard the story of Orange Band before. To see his remains really drove home poor job we've done taking care of our home. This is one of best coffee table books you can buy. It's high quality and is full of information. It's almost guaranteed that you will lean something new by reading through this book. It's by no means a feel good book, but it certainly is an important one, with a vital message.

I feel honored to have encountered such a beautiful and impactful book. Sartore’s goal to capture threatened animals on film before they disappear from the planet is admirable, and his skill with a camera is stunning. But the reality of the Earth’s devastation is at the heart of this book: “As we and our grains and livestock spread ever outward, we convert jungles, marshes, tundra, prairies, and everything else to farms, ranches, factories, roadways, and cities. Of the mammal biomass on earth today, less than 10 percent is wild. The rest is either us or the mammals we eat: cows, pigs, sheep, and goats. “Without their habitats, most wild animals can’t survive. Oh, sure, we’ll likely have coyotes and squirrels, crows and starlings – the generalists that can thrive by adapting to us. But for the specialists that have evolved to feed on a specific plant, or raise their young in a certain place at a specific time, life won’t be easy as those special circumstances disappear.” Other sobering statistics include how the songbird market of Asia is robbing rainforests of its inhabitants. “Most illegally captured birds survive only a day or two in cages, earning them the grim moniker of ‘cut-flower birds’ – they last no longer than a spray of flowers in a vase. The photos themselves are striking, and here are some fascinating thing’s you’ll encounter: -The Regent honeyeater, whose song has “regional dialects.” -The Bornean orangutan that hammed it up for the camera. -The aye-aye of Madagascar who looks like something out of Jim Henson’s creature shop. -The Iberian lynx who looks super chill, yet wise. -The soulful eyes of the Nancy Ma’s night monkey. -The horsfield’s tarsier posing with jazz hands. Any lover of nature or ardent conservationist would adore this book, its photos, and its message. I received a complimentary copy of this book via TLC blog tours.

I have the first edition of Photo Ark--I got it when my son was two because he liked animals so much. Now he's four and I got this book, too. Like the first book, this is full of beautiful pictures of all sorts of animals. Not just mammals and birds, but insects and mollusks and other invertebrates as well. The goal of the Photo Ark project is to photograph all of the species on Earth--very ambitious, for sure. This volume focuses on endangered animals. It is separated into three main chapters, plus a prologue called "Ghosts," "Disappearing," "Fading," and "Dimming," each focusing on animals on various stages of the IUCN Classification list (extinct, extinct in the wild, critically endangered, endangered, etc.) Each photo is accompanied by that animal's IUCN classification and often a short write up on the history of the animal in the wild and the threats they face. It's very stark and moving to see these beautiful photographs of these lovely animals (some of which I am familiar with and others I have never heard of) and then read about how there are none left in the wild or that they are critically endangered due to habitat loss to farming to mining. The book is beautifully done--not just the pictures (which are generally beautiful close up shots of animals on a stark black or white background so you can really see the beauty of the animal), but the pages are high quality, thick glossy paper. If you like animals and are interested in the dangers facing so many animals in the wild, this is a must own. Like I previously mentioned, it is very informative, but accessible. There is a mix of short facts (something like, "20,000 mature individuals remain in the wild" followed by a short explainer on the animal and the main threat--in this case the Indonesian gaur.) I can't recommend this book enough.

I can get straight to the point with this one. The Photo Ark Vanishing is another National Geographic book filled with stunning pictures; this time of animals nearing extinction or already extinct in the wild. Some of these animals I’d not heard of because of how rare or unusual they are, and there is beauty in every one. Ever since I was a child, the thought of any animal becoming extinct has been heartbreaking to me, especially when the extinction is due to something humans have wrought on that particular species. This is a stunning tribute to these most beautiful, rare animals, and I’m so grateful to have it in my collection. The author writes with love and care towards animals, and The Photo Ark Vanishing is definitely an indelible read. I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

As an avid amateur photographer who enjoy taking photographs of wildlife and birds, I highly anticipate Sartore’s Photo Ark books. “National Geographic The Photo Ark Vanishing: The World's Most Vulnerable Animals” is the wonderful new entry in the Photo Ark series of books. The photography is fantastic, and the books are high quality and make excellent coffee table books. The images are at times heartbreaking, knowing that this animal is close to or already extinct, but his talents to capture the soul and essence of these animals, birds, bugs, etc., is undeniable, and hopefully his dedication to this project will continue to raise awareness of the work of scientists and conservationists who are trying to save these animals. The photography is great, and the book looks fantastic. Highly recommended, and a great gift for any animal lover.

This book falls directly in my conservation interests and hobbies. I love books and documentaries that have stories I didn't know about about and this is a great mix of old stories and stunningly new stories. It is more of a family photo album with short captions more than a narrative, but these small snippets bring out the stories well. Little quotes like 1400 of these remain in the world or this fish is now only found in a single pool in a Mexican theme park bring the animals stories to life. The photos are amazing and haunting, from images of the last of their kind to museum specimens the images stick with you. It is a triumphant project and it is hard to believe that one man has recorded 9000 species in his photo gallery ark. This and his first books should be on any ecologists book shelf.

I am a huge fan of coffee table books! Do you collect them too? If you guys are looking for an early Christmas present this is it! The National Geographic’s- The Photo Ark Vanishing has the most beautiful pictures of animals I have ever seen. With 400 pages this new release shares all the animals that humans are trying to save from extinction. Some of the animals are actually extinct in the wild but through human efforts are still alive today through controlled environments. One quote from the book really stood out to me- “How hard must we be on our planet to cause even insects to vanish?” As we continue to tear down and build new, we often forget all the species that these choices harm. It is nice that Joel Sartore works so hard to capture all these pictures while these animals are still here because one day they may not be.

Broken into four main sections, National Geographic profiles animals that have gone extinct or are likely to go extinct. The first section is labeled Ghosts and provides details and photos about when select animals were no longer seen by humans. The next section is Disappearing which documents animals that are on the brink of extinction or classified as critically endangered on the Iucn Red List. Fading provides a look at the animals that are classified as general endangered. The last section labeled Dimming shows animals that have been labeled as vulnerable. With incredible photos, stories, and incredible facts, this book is a must have for those interested in protecting our animal habitats. The most appealing part of this book is the photos. I love these type of books that I can sit down with my kids and go though the different photos of animals and explain to them what is happening to these creatures. However, this book is so much more that just a picture book. It gives the history of when and why certain animals went extinct as well as what is going on today with animals. The facts surrounding these are incredible and sad at the same time. I was blown away by how much I had learned in this and my kids are loving finding out more too. The photos in this book are very beautiful . . . however, I went from loving the photos to wishing there were not so many photos with black backgrounds in less than 30 seconds! The black backgrounds and often artificial lighting on many of the animals reminds me of stuffed displays in museums. About 2/3 of the animals are displayed with totally black backgrounds. The other 1/3 are on white backgrounds. I wish more were on white--or even shown in their natural environment.

This book is both beautiful and heart rending. All of the animals in it are either already extinct in the wild or heading towards extinction. Just think about that. The man taking all of these magnificent pictures wants to at least make a record of each one’s existence before it falls from the earth. Mr. Sartore takes such evocative photos. Even this spider hater could marvel at a two page, oversized arachnid. It almost seems from the looks in the eyes of some of the animals that they knew their fate. It is almost overwhelming to page through at times when you stop to consider the book’s purpose but I think it’s something we really must do as it’s man’s fault that these animals are losing their habitat. It’s a powerful book with a very powerful message. I keep picking it up to marvel at the photography and celebrate the people who have kept some species alive through dedicated efforts in sanctuaries and preserves. There is also a profound sense of loss for those animals that will never be seen again. I received a free copy for my honest review

This book is a follow up to Joel Sartore's outstanding

I love this book. It is fast becoming the favorite of my granddaughters. When they come over we sit down with "Papa's Special Book," and look at all the animals of the world. The girls are learning lots of good things about the different animals and also about our environment and how some animals are endangered. The photo quality is amazing, the details, the depth of color or contrast, as well as the high quality paper they are printed on. The book is well bound and is a perfect "Coffee Table Book" for your home. Or use it as I do as an educational book for my grandkids. I couldn't be more excited about a picture book.

What an important book this is, and much needed. I hope that every classroom has a copy of this book because it is likely the children of today will not be able to see these animals in the flesh. All of them are in danger, many are the last of their kind. These photos are portraits, taken either with a black background or white background, of animals who are in captivity. It is precisely because they are in captivity that they are still alive. The portraits are for the most part somber - a gravitas giving weight to the alarming rate of animal extinction we are currently facing. But there are a few cute and funny ones, mainly due to the animal's expression or personality coming through. The book is both informative and a wonder to the eyes. I would definitely recommend.

If you are a nature lover, fan of National Geographic or just want to see fantastic photographs, this is the book for you! It is so sad to see how many species have disappeared or are on the verge of disappearing from the Earth. I applaud this documentary effort as a very important undertaking. The photography is breath taking and a must see. I got this so my grandchildren and their kids can see these animals. I have read that this photographer has taken a total of 10,000 of these images, so this may expand into a series of such books. I highly recommend it.

This book has all the exceptional quality you'd expect from National Geographic. Rather than showing these extinct and endangered species in situ, the emphasis is solely on the animal in almost a "photoshoot" sort of way. There are no backgrounds whatsoever, but exquisite lighting so your focus zooms in entirely on the animal. Although there are snippet of text here and there, it's very muted and provides interesting anecdotes, but the focus is solidly the photography of the animals' own magic

There is so much that can be said of this book! I am a budding photographer with a focus on nature. As ordered this book hoping to gain inspiration and technical tips from its photos. I did not expect to be moved to tears in reading it! This book is visually impressive and beautiful, but it goes well beyond that. It’s purpose is to wake its readers to the plight of these animals, and to encourage us to act - to do something - ANYTHING - to try to protect the other inhabitants of this planet. It moved me to tears - and really woke me up. I strongly recommend this book.

The vast array of animal species is well represented, with and especially strong showing of primates. Quite a few reptiles and amphibians, along with the usual and not so usual mammals. Seems a bit light on the proportion of birds and insects pictured. (Sartore does offer the excellent book Birds of the Photo Ark, though.) The picture of the leopard (black, with white speckling and a pink nose) was particularly noteworthy. A visual delight and an important message! A wonderful gift! But that’s JustMe.

Another fabulous book in the photo ark series. This one focuses on animals that are extinct, nearly extinct or otherwise endangered. It is a beautiful and elegant as the other books but far more sobering. While the other books do talk about endangered species and the challenges animals face now Photo Ark Vanishing really drives home the point that many species are disappearing at an alarming rate and calls for action on our part. Hopefully we will all find ways to contribute to the effort to minimize the human impact on the wild.

These National Geographic folks do outstanding books and videos. Their photography is exceptional. This is truly a stunning and beautiful book of animal pictures. It tells a small bit about each of the species. But what really will take your breath away is turning each page to be faced with an up close shot in some cases, of a threatened animal species. We need to take this seriously. When they are gone they are no more.

We are all animal lovers around this house. This book is absolutely amazing - the photography is top notch. If you are looking for a stunning coffee table book, this is a wonderful option. IF you are an animal lover, you will absolutely love this book and looking through the pictures. Spend some time just relaxing and learning a bit while seeing some of the most stunning creature photographs you may ever see. What a talented photographer - wonderfully executed book!

Absolutely beautiful photographs from a master photographer. This is an important book as Joel Sartore from National Geographic captures these animals that may not be around much longer due to habitat loss and climate change. These photos may be the only time you will ever see the last of their kind on earth.

This book, National Geographic The Photo Ark Vanishing: The World's Most Vulnerable Animals is a beautiful book. And there are some amazing photographs of animals up close. I don't like the artificial backgrounds however and would have preferred to have seen the animals in the wild. I'm not certain what the thought process was on this, but, I think it was a mistake. Otherwise, the animals are truly amazing to look at.

Absolutely gorgeous coffee table sized book. While Informational and beautiful this book makes great for instructional material or casual reading. This can be used in the classroom to show kids about endangered species in their natural habitats. Has the quality you’ve come to expect from NatGeo photographers.

Animals are amazing. The ones in this book are just incredible. They are not domestic. They are a part of our planetary heritage. They should be free to do what nature has programmed them to do. We should protect them from "US". Please just let them be themselves. We don't need their skin to keep warm or their flesh to eat. Don't kill anything that is not killing you.

This is primarily a photo book, and its subjects are beautifully captured, typically with plain, black backgrounds that make the photos appear stark and haunting. Each species includes a short profile and historical notes. It's a beautiful book and covers the topics with appropriate sensitivity.

The photos are amazing, and the book is very well made. Pages are thick photo glossy paper with incredible printing. Very rich deep colors and very sturdy. An amazing book both visually and scientifically.

This is an incredible book, big too at 26 x 26 x3 cms and pretty weighty at 1.9 kilos but it will be the best animal book you will ever own, covering as it does over 300 of the world’s most vulnerable animals in full glorious colour with information about it, its habitat, where the picture was taken (in the wild or in captivity with appropriate web sites). The IUCN classification for each of the animals in this book is shown and in several cases the number known to be still living is also given, these titles are Extinct (EX), Extinct in the Wild (EW), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC), Data Deficient (DD) and Not Evaluated (NE). On page 40 and across 41 The South China tiger, Panthera tigris amoyensis (CR, possibly EW) appears and this is what the book says ‘ In the early 1950’s there were more than 4000 South China tigers in the wild, They were seen as a pest and hunted to the brink of extinction until the Chinese government put protections for the species in place in the 1970s. It’s estimated that fewer than 100 of these tigers exist today.’ The title ‘The Photo Ark Vanishing’ takes its name from Joel Sartore’s National Geographic Book “The Photo Ark” a project Joel Sartore began 15 years ago, to photograph each of the world’s animal species under human care - a number he estimates to be more than 12,000. Like all of the National Geographic books, this is thought provoking and makes you wonder just when will mankind start to think about the rest of the world and start to reverse the problems we are making. It is a great book and unfortunately, people in years to come may only have books to see what life was once like.

Joel Sartore is a genius with his camera. The animals he photographs look almost as though they're emerging from the page for maximum engagement with the reader; the detail is crisp and informative. He's photoshopped the background to plain black or white aiming to achieve just this and succeeded. A lovely, lovely book 😊

i like the fact that he brought to our attention the plight of life unusual or uncommon as well as the ones we hear about on a regular basis. some of these creatures i never knew even existed, and are now vulnerable or worse. tid bits of information give you something to think about. the pictures are great.

The quality of the pictures and the written facts about the animal can make your heart soar with wonder at the obvious delight God had in creating it and then plunge you into despair about mankind’s indifference to their plight.

We have watched many documentaries on Joel Sartore and the work he is doing on the Photo Ark. His photos are exquisite - and heartbreaking - this is a book that should be in every school library - it is an eloquent and beautiful depiction of the state of our natural world.
