A very interesting story from a very interesting woman

First, a disclaimer. I am not looking to move the needle in my own personal life. I bought this book because Shelley asked me to - me and a few hundred thousand of her closest personal friends. Shelley Brander is an entrepreneur. She owns a yarn store in Tulsa with a significant online presence. She has a strong background in marketing and branding. She co-owned a branding company with her husband for many years. She is a very interesting person and her life has taken a lot of twists and turns. Shelley writes that she does not want this book to be just a memoir. Just reading through the table of contents, it’s obvious it’s intended to be a self-help book. Some of her readers have obviously been inspired to move their own needles after reading this book. For me, however, its primary value is as memoir. Shelly’s writing has a breezy, engaging style. She’s had struggles in her personal and professional life, but she’s clearly a glass half full kind of gal. Also, she knows what she wants and will not stop until she gets it. That’s lesson number one. I definitely enjoyed reading about Shelly‘s career arc, first as a woman in the marketing trade, then as a would-be yarn store owner, and now as a successful entrepreneur and professional inspirer. I think it takes a certain amount of ego to decide that one has something valuable to teach others who want to live their lives more effectively. I will just say in this case the ego comes in a pleasant package. She seems like a very nice (if occasionally annoyingly bubbly) woman, based on her frequent appearances on social media. She certainly knows how to sell things. I am not convinced that this book can be used as a blueprint for attaining your career goals, but as I’ve already said, I’m not the target audience in that respect. I do recommend it as a very interesting story about one woman’s struggle to establish herself. She has had some excellent ideas for marketing her products. And she does not want you to forget it. Simply put, her greatest talent is marketing herself.

Insights, inspiration...for anyone looking for positive change!

I came to read this book because what I had seen of what Shelley Brander does resonates with me (a knitter). I had only seen the finished, edited, curated presentations, or an occasional impromptu message that reflected that she had honed her message before going "live." "Move the Needle" is part personal reflection and part call to action. She distills clear lessons from the challenges she faced as a creative, an entrepreneur, a partner, a parent, and a person, showing her ability to gain perspective from the deeply personal struggles and showcase some key actions that could help someone facing challenges in making a dream a reality. In one passage, she described her dog Purl as a "one-of-a-kind pet, with the kindest eyes." I feel like these words could describe the Shelley Brander we come to know through her writing in "Move the Needle." She is one-of-a-kind and has the kindest eyes - eyes that have a vision to Knit the World Together and recognize how interconnected we are to one another, like knit stitches!

Amazing!

An incredible life's journey told with wit and humor about how love, empathy and determination can make anyone a winner in life. Shelley is as good at story telling as every other endeavor she pursued but her most important message is that if she can do it so can anyone else. How wonderfully empowering!

Not a Knitting Book - A LIFE BOOK!

Move the Needle is a book for anyone with a dream, a goal, or the wistful thought, "If only...". It is conversational, relatable, and inspirational. Most of all, this book is PERSONAL. There is no pie in the sky - only grit, determination, and persistence. Shelley worked hard to clarify her vision and mission, learned from mistakes, and made adjustments to achieve her goals. She found her fuel in the word "can't" and showed everyone she "CAN". She will give you the tools and the encouragement so you can too.

The importance of people

I was drawn to this book because I thought it would be fun to learn what it was like to start a yarn shop. But by far, what I got from the book was a deep-felt conviction of the importance of people in our worlds. Having been isolated for so many months from Covid lockdowns, I was touched throughout the book with stories and insights into people. This started at the very beginning of the book where the author told her early childhood lessons of empathy. This struck me at a time when I was having difficulty with a friendship, and it made me realize I had not tried to understand my friend as I should. Toward the end of the book, I was touched by the author’s recounting of her first staff hires. I remembered my own experience as a supervisor and how I had lost touch with so many of my earlier colleagues. I realized that I had let those friendships languish, and that it was time to reach out again. The final big lesson was the author’s views of finding experts — people who are experienced and know what they are doing. I found this a very valuable lesson because there is so much to continue learning. So, although the book is about entrepreneurship, to me it is a story about people and the importance of people in our lives.

Finding your path

Shelly has written a manual of persevering thought the challenges of life and keeping your eye on the goal. Rarely is someone truly an overnight success in reaching their goal but follows a step by step progression. But it all begins with a dream, with identifying your passion, learning from mentors, books and trial and error. But never give up! Thank you for the reminder Shelly!

A Fast Read with Good Insights

The book is a fast read, good stories and insights. I suspect the tough times were tougher than Shelley says but she shows how persistence wins the day. A book that should be read more than once as you will gain new perspectives each time. As a knitter and small business owner I can attest to the truth of her experience in making money and a life doing what she loves.

Life Lesson with Some Strings and Sticks

Would you like to sit down and hear some awesome stories? Would you like to be inspired? This is a book about overcoming "can't" and how the author builds on her dreams no matter what. If things go not quite to plan, she turns it around and figures out something that will work. Shelley Brander takes you on the journey of turning her dreams to reality and all the realities that happen along the way. There are tools for all of us, not just if you are a knitter. There are tools for those of us who want to do more in our lives, be it making a hobby a job, or some other dream to follow and make it come to life. No matter where you are in life, there is something here to learn.

An inspirational book that is not just for knitters!

I finished reading Move the Needle”and was left feeling positive and enthusiastic . I am semi-retired, but the stories Shelly shares resonate with me on a very personal level. Haven’t we all been dealt a hand we didn’t anticipate? It is in how we play it that we grow. I was inspired by Shelley’s honesty and vulnerability as she shared success and opportunities in her own life and the life of her family. I circled back over and over to her father’s lesson on empathy and find it applies to most of life’s events. Although I had already completed the book, I still listened to it in its entirety when the audiobook was released to us. Thank you Shelly for sharing your stories and your heart in a most eloquent manner.

A great read for everyone

I have too much to say to get it all in a summary review. Let me just say that I will be giving the book to quite a few people. There is something interesting, useful and important for everyone — I mean everyone — in Shelley’s book; can you think of any other book (Bible notwithstanding) about which you can say that? Move the Needle is not likely to make it into the canon of great literature but it deserves to be in the canon of “books relevant to your life no matter who you are”. You may find you want to read it in one sitting — don’t. Savor it. Between chapters think about your own life and passion. I am in my 70s, retired, and doubted that a book like this would be worth the dwindling reading time I have left. I was wrong. Read this. You will not be sorry. If you are a crafter, follow it up with Brander's other book, Untangled.

A treat to read + useful

I feel lucky that I got to read this book, and I have many passages marked. I’ll come back to it over and over. It feels more like a good conversation with a friend than a book. As someone who has enjoyed all of the Loops adventures since the store opened, it’s a real pleasure to get to read about Shelley’s journey and learn from her insights. The stories in the book are well-curated and well-organized in a framework that will help readers find their place in the creative journey and move forward intentionally, authentically, and joyful. I’ve heard it said that we are made to be makers. This book is an inspiring look at how one person lives out that identity and how each of us can do the same.

Encouragement

So much wisdom and encouragement in this book. Failure will happen, just keep going! Such a great story! Read this!

A knitter's inspirational story about not giving up on her dreams

You know that glint in a person’s eyes that tells you someone is genuine, “real,” and has a kind yet determined spirit? I think that glint is present in every photo and video I’ve seen of Shelley. I’ve never met her, but after reading her book, Moving the Needle, I have no doubt that this is the case. She tells the story of her path to creating the very unique and successful yarn business, Loops. It was not always an easy one, but she has a fierce determination that would not let her give up on her dreams or her family when life threw a few curves her way. She worked extremely hard to get where she is. When there were stumbling blocks, she not only kicked them out of the way but also made things better in the process. That determination is contagious; she has a way of making her reader feel as if we can do the same and that she will be in our corner cheering us on. I could not put the book down and encourage everyone to read this book. It is not just for those who knit and crochet but for everyone who has a desire within to pursue a dream. You will enjoy Shelley’s story and might even get moving to make your own story happen!

Fantastic read!

I love a good book and Move the Needle is a book that had to be written. Branders story is an inspiring and compulsory read written with a skill is able to keep the reader flowing through personal and professional triumphs intertwining from the first word to the last. One of my favorite life lessons details that at a certain time in life we must learn to “grow down” after we grow up. Slow down and look back on your own trials and accomplishments. Shellys book had me reminding myself not only to slow down, but also find some inspiration to “start peddling” again. I came to know this book as a knitter (through knit stars) and I’ve come away with a new outlook on even my own life. There is always more to reach for and there is an endless resource of challenges and support in this world as long as you keep “moving the needle”!

Engaging Read (even for non-knitters)

I was expecting a memoir and that it was, but as is true of many such books, it made you ponder your own life (like, I'm glad I did not pursue my yarn store dream) - lots of interesting and inspiring stories! I found the part on her son very interesting (wish I had found similar information when I had a crying child which I fairly recently realized was probably due to sensitivity/allergy). It was fun to learn some interesting knitting things despite knitting seriously for over 15 years. I was a little uncomfortable with the descriptions that reflect poorly on a few people that I assume would be pretty easy to figure out if you were from the area. I also do NOT do sad animal stories so I have to admit that I let my eyes float right by most of the section about her dog. The empathy example was great as well as the cashmere scarf story. I told my business-major son some of her stories and even read a section to him that I thought was applicable as he's looking for a summer internship. I think anyone thinking of starting a business or hoping to succeed in the business world would benefit from Shelley's experience and thoughts - definitely not just for knitters. I do so hope to visit Loops if I am ever in Tulsa, but at least I got a taste of it by reading this book - makes it seem a bit closer!

LOVE IT...not a knitter

as a non-knitter who has never even considered knitting... (though beautiful yarns have driven me to create lots of scarves with looms) I was surprised to learn of the healing power of knitting in particular. One particularly moving passage in chapter 11 "The Fabric" recounts the story of cancer patients coming into the author's yarn store from a nearby medical center. Though too foggy to concentrate on certain things like reading, they were "lit up with joy" from knitting what Brander calls "meditative patterns" in beautiful colors. "the knitting process calmed them, soothed their spirits and helped them transform their feelings of helplessness into a powerful, quiet productivity." That's a wow! but as a women who ALSO started her own biz (and as a single mom) I loved the authors personal story of both tenaciously building a business and tenaciously mother-ing through difficult, extremely challenging and scary circumstances. Her conclusion is inspiring to me - "you have so much more energy than you know. Trust that it will be there for you when you need it the most." Loved it cover to cover!

With shear determination and lots of lessons personally and professionally Shelley shares how she created the wonderful group uniting knitters - globally !!! Her enthusiasm in the book is contagious, you don't want the book to end. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. fun story

I thought it would be a tad more helpful in starting a creative business - but as she noted she doesn’t feel like anyone can give a prescription but does give some good suggestions. The part about knit stars was interesting (especially having been someone who took the modern calligraphy summit when it first was released) but it felt disconnected to the loops story, as other chapters did also. I did see how she connected them in her mind but for a reader some of the book felt jumpy/disorganized to me. Overall it has given me a massive appreciation for my LYS to the point that I even told the owner that. She also had some great words on creativity without burnout. Sort of like pushing to open a business without burning out. I appreciated that.

Should be required reading in all entrepreneurship programs...

If you have ever listened to the podcast "How I Built This," you hear these amazing stories behind the regular people who build brands we are all familiar with. Though I love that podcast, I still feel like so many of those stories are out of reach. In "Move The Needle," not only does Shelly Brander share her captivating life story, but she also tells you in detail how she accomplished what she did. She also brings it down to earth so you feel like you can do this too. As someone who has built his own business, I can tell you that Shelly is sharing GOLD that I've never heard on any of those podcasts. When I saw this book, I thought it was one my wife would love, not just because she knits, but because we own our business together. However, when the book arrived, I tore through it before she did. I think it should be required reading in all entrepreneurship programs so people can read not only how small businesses are started, but how they can succeed. This book is really for anyone with a passion and a dream.

An informative, friendly read

Shelley is a knitting entrepreneur who runs the extremely popular Knit Stars Online Knitting Summit. She also runs a very popular brick and mortar (and online) knitting store, Loops, in Tulsa, OK. So, how did she get here? How does she run TWO huge enterprises and not lose her mind--and also be a wife and mom to her family? In Move the Needle, Shelley tells us all. She tells us about her uprbringing, her time at Texas Christian University and her work in the advertising world, and then the creation of Loops and Knit Stars--all while dealing with family problems, creative setbacks, financial setbacks, and the rest of it. Shelley tells us that she doesn't do it all--she can't--but she focuses on what she does well, and how all creative people can learn from the lessons she's learned in her businesses!

This Is a Book for Everyone

When my children were younger, I had an acrylic picture frame in our bathroom with motivational sayings that I would change occasionally to inspire them. Shelley Brander has wrtten an inspiring and engaging book for everyone (not just knitters) to read to help you find and expand your creativity and even help you become an entrepreneur. Here are a few of the motiational sayings I am taking away from this book: 1. Burst bubbles are a gift. 2. Progress not perfection. 3. Done is better than perfect. 4. Just take the next step. Are you intrigued? Purchase and read the book!!

A compilation of life changing lessons and challenges.

I’ll admit, I’m not really looking to move my own needle, I’m at a happy, well appreciated and creative place, but I knew this book would be interesting, entertaining, and very insightful. I was totally correct in my expectations and I am so thankful I took the time to read, contemplate, and enjoy this compilation of Shelley Brander’s experiences. My favorite, most personal section, was the Third Move. I could totally relate and apply these experiences to challenges I had faced in my own life. I, too, have taken stock of my own priorities as I moved forward through personal highs and lows. I am so glad I took the time to really ponder Move the Needle and it’s various messages. I can most definitely recommend this wonderful read, it will enrich you and challenge you as you go forth and live your best life.

Uplifting and Inspirational!

Having watched with great interest and awe as Shelley VanDall Brander has grown her business from a local yarn shop to a worldwide community of yarn enthusiasts and experts over the years I was very excited to read Move the Needle: Yarns from an Unlikely Entrepreneur. The book did not disappoint. Shelley shares the story of her pathway to success while also sharing personal anecdotes about her life and her family. She describes the ups and downs that she faced in her personal and professional life, sharing the roadblocks she encountered along the way, and shares the family and health issues that she dealt with that could easily have derailed her plans. Her story is truly inspirational. She displays a “never give up” and “never take no for an answer” attitude. Any setback or disappointment is seen as an opportunity for which she finds a solution and comes back better and stronger than ever. Her can do attitude has led her to this time and place where not only does she have a very successful in person and online retail presence but has also truly managed to “knit the world together” by bringing fiber enthusiasts and experts from around the world into her circle through her latest endeavor, “Knit Stars”. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading about a strong and passionate woman who has managed to turn her dream into reality. But it is more than just her personal story. It is also a terrific guide for anyone who has an entrepreneurial spirit and wishes to turn their passion into a paying job or as Shelley describes it, a jobby. The book is an easy and pleasant read and Shelley’s story is truly inspirational. There are lots of tips to help those who are interested in starting a business and Shelley shares the resources that were helpful to her in starting and growing her business. I will certainly share it with my family and friends.

The LIFE of a Child of God

Shelley Brander is a testament to all of us, not just as an entrepreneur but as a Child of God. Her determination in caring for her family, friends and businesses has brought her to where and what she is today. I have a love for creating things which has now become a struggle which I am going to overcome with the help of the Lord. All my adult life, I have been a caregiver and an advocate for family, friends and others God has placed in my life. I recommend that anyone who wants to learn how to live a good life read this. God never said life would be easy but with Him it can be great! Thank you Shelley for your encouragement.

A guide to putting your mind map to fruition

I did not read this book all in one sitting. I took my time, letting it sink in, chewing on the vast amount of information shared by Mrs. Brander. Although the book is called "Move the Needle", it is not about knitting and patterns, it's about how to move the needle on your goal dial, how to set the needle on your clock to success. Yes, there are references to knitting in the book, but that's because of her particular goal. She has entertainingly written how she got to where she is today. I highly suggest this book as a source of reading for those interested in making their ideas come to fruition. Whether your idea is for a new gaming app, writing a book/novel, traveling, photography, drawing/art/painting, designing (clothes, knitwear, architecture, etc.), cooking, or opening your own small business, this book will lay out a foundation for you to follow to get you started. Whatever it is, you CAN DO IT, despite the fact you may have repeatedly been told you CAN'T DO IT. DO IT! Read her steps, make your mind map, implement the tools she writes about into your plan, and find the help you need along the way (don't wait). You CAN do it ... just go out and DO it!

Inspiring..that push you need

Reading Move the Needle is like sitting back in front of a cozy fire with your new best friend, sipping a nice glass of wine while she tells you great stories. They’re the kind of stories that make you stronger as you hear them, and just the experience of relating to her struggles makes yours seem bearable even conquerable! You laugh over the silly things, the 4 year old on her tricycle ( how her mom must have freaked when she realized that was her girl) You choke up when she talks about her kids, but you watch her shine with pride when all that boundless determination makes those children grow beyond anyone’s expectations! And so much more, all personal, all true and all making you see what’s possible! Shelley Brander’s book, Move the Needle is that friend. And even more than telling you her story, she makes you view your story differently. What can you do, what would you do if there was nothing to stop you? I encourage you to read and share this book and find out where you can go!

A Candid Account

"Don't douse your spark before it even has a chance to catch," says Shelly in her new book. Right? We are capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit and reading Move the Needle is a reminder of the endless strength and boundless energy we can possess if we just believe in ourselves... even when it seems like an unlikely yarn. Shelly Brander reminds us that as fiber artists we know the power of patience to get things done; we will rip apart so we can rebuild it right. This book is a candid retelling of overcoming obstacles, looking on the bright side, and creating and something wonderful from an idea. Whether you are looking for tools, ideas and guidance to help you manifest something new for yourself or you need reminders of how resilient humans can be, this book is a delightful read full of light, humor, and color even when it seems the plan is unraveling. Enjoy!

Get it! Read it! Love it!

Shelley Brander has written one heck of a motivational book full of wonderful quotable text and sound bites for everyone who needs to experience it. Her message of the winning and learning, freedom and joy, healing and connection, and so much more, to be found in our own individual creativity, is so timely and necessary. I appreciate her book coming to me at a time in my life where I’m pivoting on all levels and redefining my ideas of work, career, and success. Her message, found in a mix of heart-warming and entertaining stories of her life experiences, hard-won insights, and sage advice, is so easy to digest, and is positively motivating and inspiring. Thank you, Shelley Brander, for such a perfectly time gem, as I find myself at a period in my life where I can use a bit of motivation as I hover at the precipice of realizing my dream, of transforming work into play, meetings into play dates. Reader of my review, I’ll leave you with a couple of quotes of the many that resonated deeply with me: “If you can find a way to turn your hobby into your jobby, you’re one giant step closer to you’re dream. Work becomes play…Meetings become play dates…” “Creativity, in almost any form, has the potential to become a form of ministry…” “When you start with a common bond, some sticks and string, and conversation, it’s amazing the fabric you can create together.” Take Care!

You CAN do it!

Some books that I look forward to reading sit on my nightstand for weeks, or months, or years before I actually open them. When an advance copy of "Move the Needle" arrived, I opened it right away, read it cover to cover in a matter of days, and as my friends and family can attest, I haven’t stopped thinking or talking about it since then. The timing was perfect - I had been wondering whether I might start doing more with something that has long been a hobby, and had read that this book would provide not only inspiration and encouragement but also practical wisdom on taking hobbies to the next level, whether that means simply trying out a new technique, expanding the community that shares your interests, or moving from being an enthusiast to becoming an entrepreneur. The author absolutely delivers through a combination of endearing and honest personal stories, helpful suggestions for visioning and making action plans, advice for “when things unravel”, and words of wisdom on everything from marketing to thinking outside the box to building a community of support for your endeavors. Yes, yarn and fiber arts is her medium (and mine, which made the book, for me, even more beneficial and delightful), but her story is one anyone who has ever dreamed of starting something new can savor and learn from. Two lessons I especially appreciate from the book are working with mentors, and remembering that sometimes we win and sometimes we learn. I have already recommended this book to others, and will continue doing so as I take what I have learned from the author and move my own needle from dallying with my fiber arts dreams to diving in. This book will stay on my nightstand, not because I haven’t gotten to it yet, but because I will return to it time and again.

Inspirational and Motivational

This book was very difficult for me to put down once I started! The writer relates to you in everyday life, dreams of starting a business, has a successful career, through positivity, strength, creative mindset she chooses a path for her family and business that is successful! She takes us along the journey and it is emotional, yet so rewarding! If you want to start a business, even a small one, or have a major plan in mind this book will certainly inspire you! I highly recommend it!

POWER IN THE STORY

We are all the hero/heroine of our own story as much as our stories interconnect and can inspire other. Shelley Brander shares her story of inspiration and dedication to inspire others to do the same. During pandemic times, I found Shelley's work to be inspirational. From Knit Stars to Loops club the positivity and creativity inspire me. I look forward to learning more from this Fiber Artist and thought leader as I move my own needle(s) and write the next chapter of my own story where I accomplish goals that till now have been kept as one day dreams. Definitely recommend reading! .

Create

Move the Needle – Review This book will get you off your butt to do what you have always dreamt of doing. Or not. And if not, you should go work in a factory (not that there is anything wrong with that). If you have a creative, entrepreneurial bone in your body, or thought in your head, settle down, read Shelley’s book, and be inspired. From the Mad Men style drama of her early career, to lasting and growing team building, Shelley is realizing her dream of knitting the world together. Her book full of stories to move you to action is certainly not limited to the knitting world. Her principles are applicable to any creative person with a dream. And, if you do not have that dream, Shelley’s book is a fun, interesting read. You might just find out that there is a creative idea lurking below the surface.

Great read with tons of lessons

This is a book I'll come back to time and again, not because I'm an entrepreneur (I'm not) but because it's a good read with a lot of life lessons. Those life lessons started with the first story and kept me glued to the stories until the last page. If you are looking for a good read with lessons intermingled, this is the book for you. If I had children [think teenagers) then I'd toss this book to them for easy lesson learning. Shelley has a gift for storytelling and for tying the whole package together. GREAT EASY READ, just soak it all up and you'll be better from the experience!

Inspired by Shelley’s Journey

I loved this book. I felt as if Shelley were sitting next to me sharing her story, perhaps sharing a bottle of wine, and inspiring me to move the needle. This past year I found myself getting further away from my creativity but after being inspired by Shelley’s journey, I have begun again to create original designs. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone going through a difficult time whether it is in their personal life, their professional life, or just the “new normal”we have all faced this past year. Don’t let anyone tell you “You can’t” to your dream. Keep your dream in sight and move the needle!

How to Navigate Life's Detours to Success

If you want a well written page turner this book is for you. It reads like an exciting novel, but is a fascinating autobiography/how to for anyone who faces decisions and obstacles in life. Words fly off the pages with sound advice that has led to Shelley's success through the years. She has not let others' "no" stop her ambition and passion. For anyone who can benefit from a dose of enthusiasm and encouragement taken with a great story, I prescribe your reading this book and sharing it with friends.

Energizing book to push you forward!

Wow! Where do I begin without giving away too much? I couldn’t put this amazing motivational book down! I would say this is the perfect book for anyone to get excited about their dreams for their life. It is quite the book for dreamers and entrepreneurs. And it is also just a fun book to read about Shelley’s adventures to reach her goals and spread joy to everyone on a big scale. I knit occasionally, but my big dream is getting my illustrations and optimism out into the world. Shelley has so much advice from mindmapping to mentors that I will be reading this book again and again. I love how she calls her business her “jobby”. She talks about finding what lights you up inside, putting a deep focus to your passion and not just making a living but making little joyful advancements for the whole human race! Wouldn’t it be great if we all used our gifts and talents in this way to reach others? There are so many favorite stories, I especially loved “The Cashmere Scarf”-it really shows Shelley’s tenacity and persistence. I love how Shelley is just bursting with energy and enthusiasm and wants to share this with others, it is contagious! Read it to get started on your own adventure!

Quick Fun Fascinating Read

I just finished the audiobook version of Move the Needle and I really loved it so I am happy to post a review which I don't do very often. I’m a knitter, but not an entrepreneur, and yet, I still felt this book spoke to me and I didn’t want to stop listening. I loved her stories and her insights about work ethic, empathy, being a mom, dealing with struggles and failures and learning from them, and being creative and avoiding burnout. Entrepreneur or not, you will enjoy this book and learn from it. Mom or not, you will identify with Shelley’s personal stories. If you are already creative or just want to be, her stories will inspire you. Knitter or not, Shelley’s peek into the business of knitting and yarn stores and yarn suppliers is fascinating. This book is wonderful and well worth your time.

You don't have to be an aspiring entrepreneur to benefit from this book.

It’s not strictly a business book. It’s not strictly a memoir. It is an inspiration. While Move the Needle will most certainly benefit those who have been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, it will also benefit those who are looking to be successful, no matter what they are doing or aspire to do. You’ll learn lessons such as: —When there is a will, there is a way (hop on that tricycle and ride!). —How will you know that you can’t do something if you don’t try? —Don’t be afraid to speak up when you need to. —Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. —Is this a good deal for you? ...and more! For many of us, living through these strange times has given us an opportunity to slow down enough to evaluate the direction of our lives. If you are in this camp and have decided that it's time to change direction, you need to pick up this quick read and be inspired to make that change.

Moving the Needle is for everyone!

I have to admit that I groaned when I realized after preordering Shelley Brander’s book Moving the Needle that not only had I committed to reading it electronically prior to January 12, but also to writing and publishing a review. I typically read at night and sometimes am found by my husband with my book resting on my face. That type of reading wouldn’t work for this timeline so began my daytime reading. Wow! Moving the Needle captivated me with the introduction. Shelley writes so honestly about her struggles, triumphs and everyday life that you’re drawn in and you just want to keep reading! If you have entrepreneur aspirations, read this book! If you want to expand your creativity, read this book! If you want to treat the people in your life better, read this book! I think you should read this book! Shelley thank you for writing Moving the Needle, thank you for Knit Stars and now Tulsa, Oklahoma and a wonderful place named Loops is on my bucket list to visit.

The book we all need right now!

Yes, the author owns a Tulsa yarn store and is the creative visionary behind KnitStars, the master class of the knitting world before MasterClass was even a thing. But it is also a story about growing up with big ideas and big plans, creating opportunities for personal connection, taking risks, making mistakes, owning up to those mistakes, and moving forward. This is a book for storytellers, readers who gravitate towards memoirs, and entrepreneurs, especially female ones. Amidst the vignettes, there is practical advice one can apply immediately to their own personal and work lives. It is also a book for crafters who are interested in pulling back the curtain to see how LYS (local yarn stores) make decisions about their products and cultivating their store's culture. But above all, this is a book about positivity, perseverance, empathy, and kindness and what can happen to a kid on an open road with a trike and a dream when she stays leads with these qualities in every aspect of her life.

Like chatting with a VERY experienced friend

Shelley provides both inspirational and practical knowledge about following your dream to become an entrepreneur. She writes candidly about her personal journey, success and failures, without preaching, bragging, or sugar coating. Most definitely not just for knitters, but for anyone with a dream. It's an inspirational read whether you're interested in pursuing entrepreneurship or not. And as an aside, having participated in her "beta group", Knit Stars, Knit the World Together, etc. it was fun to learn about the "behind the scenes."

Great story style for learning

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Move the Needle. Yes...I'm a Loops customer as well as an avid knitter so I'd say the author was an instant draw for me. Besides that - I'm a small business owner. It was great to read a book that reflects the challenges of being a small business owner and how we just have to keep stepping up and keeping an eye on where we are trying to go and not lose sight of how helpful the misadventures can be. If you want a book that helps you keep moving through small business and growing - grab Move the Needle!

This is a GEM,,

This little treasure is a Gem! It was so much more than I expected. It has helped me stay mostly focused. Something I was having trouble with. I really enjoyed all the laughs and cry’s in it. Best of all the audio. What can one say, a great read and the type of book you hang on to forever. Thanks Shelley. Great Job!

What a Great Memoir!

I picked up this book on a lark because it was on special. I like memoirs and biographies and really enjoyed how the author wrote. It felt like I was listening to her simply telling the story of her life and how she created a crafting business. It was a joy to read and I highly recommend it.

Get Ready to Be Inspired!!!

Move the Needle by Shelly Brander is such a good read with so much vulnerability and good advice! It matters not if you are or are not a knitter, it’s more about how to succeed and thrive with an entrepreneur’s mindset and focus. Shelley gives such down to earth advice that it is impossible not to be uplifted and inspired by listening to her story of the twists and turns taken to get where she is today. We get to see a glimpse below the “tip of the iceberg” to understand what hard work and perseverance really means, as well as what empathy looks like from a boots-on-the-ground perspective. I really enjoyed this very honest and humble account of Shelley’s life and her willingness to share and uplift others. Well done Shelley!

Engaging! Enlightening! Energizing!

Shelly Brander's new book "Move the Needle" is a gift you give yourself and anyone you know who wants to be an entrepreneur. Her story telling grabbed me and wouldn't let me go for 2 wonderful afternoons. (similar to binge watching the latest hot 1 season series) I felt like I was in the scenes of her various personal stories. She articulates the many key attributes that every entrepreneur needs to be successful - 100% belief in the idea, passion, research, hard work, energy, mentors, perseverance and a differential edge. And the final magic sauce is the energizing effect this book had on me. I believe that is because she is honest and genuine and transparent in sharing her story with anyone lucky enough to find this book. Now I am ready to move forward with my own creative project. Thank you Shelly for giving me the tools and motivation I needed to tackle this next challenge.

Inspiration and guidance that empowers readers to follow their passions!

I love this inspiring book by Shelley Brander! This book presents real life examples from Shelley’s life of her setting goals, overcoming obstacles, and the paths she takes towards her successes. She shows how wanting to do something is just the start; the next step is developing an action plan and identifying people who can guide and support us. And, sometimes, part of “moving the needle” is the courage to make adjustments in our plan while not giving up! Throughout the book, Shelley’s warmth and honesty leave the reader feeling that she is sitting with you and you are talking to a trusted friend. When I finished the book I felt empowered to “move the needle” forward in my life. I will be rereading this book often for the inspiration and guidance presented on its pages. This book is a gift!

Move The Needle is a great read for anyone and everyone who is already, or considering embarking on their own life voyage, honestly it doesn’t matter what that voyage may be. Shelley helps set a roadmap on how to set and achieve goals~~~for every aspect of life . Thanks for sharing this very personal gift.

Inspiring book - Enjoyable read

What an inspiring book! When you see a very successful person, you never know what they have been through at home. She may have a big smile on her face, but don't let that fool you. She is a smart business woman with a lot to teach us all. This book really inspired me to move forward into living my dreams. It was a great read - very entertaining and informative.

An interesting read

Through personal stories, struggles, and hard earned triumphs, the author shares reflections of her personal and business experience - offering advice to help others move their own needle. The conversational tone makes for a quick read, and leaves any reader with insights and opportunities to reflect on their own journey - past, present, or future.

Easy to read, entertaining, interesting and great practical advice for new entrepreneurs!

I read this book over 4 evenings. If I was younger, I would have read it in one seating. It was that interesting and compelling. Initially, I wanted to read Move the Needle because the author is someone that I have met and admire in the knitting world. Little did I realize that her stories would speak to me on so many levels. I gained a nugget of wisdom from each chapter. Her "yarns", both about obstacles and successes; of starting a knitting business in Tulsa (Oklahoma) were fascinating. This book is a must-read for any new entrepreneur - you don't have to be a fiber addict to avoid common mistakes when starting a new business! Thank you, Shelley Brander, for having the courage to be a risk-taker and sharing your ups and downs while chasing your dreams!

Inspiring Read!

Shelley takes the reader into her thinking and journey in becoming an extraordinary entrepreneur. Her personal stories of successes and troublesome spots are not only inspiring but affirming. According to Shelley we can all rise to the challenge of our dreams despite what others may tell us or the obstacles that may arise in our path. This book is like sitting with your best friend and having that truth in your face talk about living your dreams.

Could this be the first of a series?

After finishing this engaging book, I am left wondering what's next for Shelley and Knitting the World Together. I anticipate more unique and exciting ventures and look forward to learning of and reading about them. Move the Needle could be a recommended read for a variety of audiences - entrepreneurs, parents of children with disabilities, small business owners, and knitters, just to name a few. The resources online are bountiful and provide an infinite number of topics for further pursuit.

WOW....just....WOW!

I love a great "yarn" (yes, pun intended), but who doesn't?! I laughed, I cried, I smiled, I talked to myself and I high-fived no one imparticular; Shelley's stories resonated with me on so many levels. Yes, I couldn't pace myself, I had to read this book all the way through but that's okay because this is the kind of book I will pick up again and again. I am so impressed I am going to have my 25 year DD and 22 year DS read the book as well, as I believe there are aspects that will resonate with them too, especially in their quest to find their place in this crazy world. Well done Shelley and thank you for your honesty...it is very brave of you to have shared some intimate and at times brutal details. Bless you 😊

Honest and inspirational

I love that author was honest in what she went through to get where she is today. She didn’t let people get her down when they said it wouldn’t work to open a knit shop. It offers hope that you can do things even when others aren’t so supportive. Loved the book and her plan to knit the world together!

Inspirational and Motivating

Move the Needle: Yarns from an Unlikely Entrepreneur is an inspirational guide for anyone who has ever thought "I love doing this but I could never have a job doing it." In an funny and poignant personal memoir, Ms. Brander relates how she did just that, turned her hobby into a "jobby" and relays valuable life lessons on how to do it yourself, whether your passion is knitting, writing or anything else. I highly recommend this book for anyone daydreaming about wanting to make a change in their life but not sure where to begin. Shelly will help you find out where and how to take that first step.

Encouraging and Uplifting for anyone

I typically do not read Non-fiction but I was drawn to this book "Move the Needle" and so thankful I read it. Shelley VanDall Brander shares so openly her life story. We need to listen to those voices in our head and see failure as an opportunity to grow. Her love of knitting and realizing that kindness goes a long way is truly an inspiration. Never forget your family as they are often our biggest supporters is a very good lesson indeed as they often get neglected. Remember to get back on the tricycle and follow your dreams!

How well developed empathy can drive success

I have just discovered Shelly's Knit Star Program during Covid. I bought season 3 and I was very impressed with the level of professionalism the master knitting classes offered. I pre-ordered the book and I wasn't disappointed. Shelley guides us through her journey and demonstrates how a high level of empathy and awareness helps her discover how to make her passion into a viable business. Her business not only creates revenue but also creates connection and community. I was captivated and finished the book in one day. I'll dip into it for reference in the future as I follow my dreams.

Encouraging, Inspiring, Heartfelt, Honest!

From the start I was "hooked". No need to be a fiber lover to love this book! I laughed, cried, cheered and eagerly turned page after page! She shares information that is applicable in everyone's lives! This book will lift your spirits and encourage you to get up! Keep going!

Uplifting life's lessons for everyone

The way you bring us into your life’s story makes one want to go out into the world and do more with those “nagging ideas” that one self-doubts will work. The entire time I read your beautiful words, I was struck with the idea of converting your words into a knitwear that I can carry with me every day and promote your compelling story to those that ask me, “what are you wearing?” This is my pay-it-forward to others to compel them to read the book, but also to put your message further out into the world. Trust your creative ideas, don’t second guess, and advocate for yourself! So many wonderful lessons; truly a read for everyone.

We all have a needle

You do not need to be a knitter or crocheter to benefit from this book. You just need to be human with your own unique struggles in life. Ms. Brander if full of wisdom that comes from overcoming real life challenges. Through her own hard work, determination & resilience Ms. Brander reminds us all that anything is possible if you are willing and determined to put in the work, tap into your creativity and dig into your energy reserves. This is the perfect book to lift your spirits and make you believe your craziest dreams can come true.

Get to know Shelley Bender and yourself by reading Move The Needle.

I have been a customer of Shelley Brander for years with her online yarn shop Loops and her online Knit Stars program. Reading Move the Needle is the story of her journey to being the host to help people “Knit the World Together”. It is more than a life story with fun pictures to share and personal tales to tell for there is plenty to highlight, take in and relate to as she explains how she made choices and decisions along the way to create and grow her businesses. I personally love the cover picture! This book is a great motivator to help you think about and take action for your life and what you want to accomplish and share with the world.

Wow! I loved it!

I'm not sure I ever read a book so quickly or was so eager to finish! Inspiring!

I read the book in one sitting. To say it was amazing would be an understatement. ❤️ Shelley writes as if having a conversation over a cuppa, talking to me as a good friend. I came away inspired by her tenacity, and to try my hand at something I’ve been too hesitant to begin: designing and publishing my first knitting pattern. And when, not if, I encounter setbacks...I’ll move my needle forward!!!

Shelley has a marvelous writing voice which calls the reader to continue flipping through the pages. Amazing journey of a beautiful soul

Loved reading this book. The drive of the young woman then mother to push herself to achieve her personal goals for herself and her family is truly remarkable. Especially enjoyable for me is the shared love of knitting, creating something from nothing...what can be more beautiful! Go Shelley!

I usually read fiction- I couldn’t put this book down!

This book gives me great hope and lifts my spirits! I usually read fiction- to escape life troubles. As the pandemic threatened to overtake my mental well-being, I took up knitting. I could listen to my fiction audiobooks and create something to bring others joy. Move The Needle was an awakening for me that I can do so much more than soothe my mind and escape the troubles of life. I can take charge of my life. I can change things. This book has given me the courage and confidence to step out of my comfort zone!

Inspiring

I enjoyed reading Shelley Brander's new book, Move the Needle. It is part memoir, part business-coach book, and part life-coach book rolled into one. She tells the very personal story of her life up to this point. At the same time, she presents universal business truths and life lessons that contributed to her own success and which helped her to bounce back stronger from setbacks. Throughout all of this, she weaves encouragement and issues calls to action that motivates the reader to "move the needle" in their own lives and to use her principles to further their own goals.

Read this book - even if your are not a knitter

Real life happens to all of us, even those we perceive as being highly successful and full of great ideas. There is no doubt that Shelley is a talented individual with some highly useful skills, but in this very vulnerable sharing of her story she proves that hard work, determination and a willingness to learn from your mistakes can yield amazing results. I would recommend Move the Needle for anyone starting a new business or other endeavor. Shelley will inspire you and remind you that you are not alone in your insecurities.

Not just knitting

Shelley shares life and business lessons that will inspire everyone that has ever considered opening a business, whether great or small. Also lessons that can help people already in business. Plus, it throws in knitting lessons and her personal life information too. Great read!

Not just for knitters or entrepreneurs

This is a story of "knitting" together the strings of life -- good things, struggles, goals, opportunities into the unique fabric that makes you, you. An easy read that is also challenging. As I look toward my retirement in a few years, I'm thinking about what I want to do with my next chapter, and this book provides some thought-provoking words as I do.

Doing what others say you CANNOT!

Ms. Brander has a way with words and a way of captivating her reader. Move The Needle is not just a story about how a young sassy Mom of three opens a yarn store and all is good. It is about the good and the bad, about the unexpected hiccups and getting through them not only in business but in life as well. The author goes after her dream only to develop a brand like no other. Her motivation is contagious . Move The Needle is a book about showing yourself you CAN when others say you CANNOT. Find your passion and go for it.

Great read. It was hard to put it down after I started reading. Very informative on becoming a store owner and being successful. Plus just interesting reading about a normal family and dealing with day to day life while working hard at what you love. I’ve already shared it with a friend and may read it a second time. Buy it! You won’t regret it.

A plan for entrepreneurs...

Move the Needle by Shelley Brander could be thought of as an autobiography of the author’s life but it is much more. She illustrates throughout the book how her rejection of the word “can’t” has driven her throughout her life. This mindset has led her to pursue her dreams in the advertising business, in her family life and now in establishing a worldwide yarn business with the mantra “Knit the world together.” She shares lots of advice and suggestions to entrepreneurs for starting and growing a business just by telling her amazing story.

This book the very readable, inspiring life story of Shelley Brander, yarn shop owner.

Don't miss reading this inspiring and motivational book! Shelley's life is full of one challenge after another but she perseveres through each one. She doesn't give up, doesn't take no for an answer, instead, looking for a better way to solve the challenge. She is incredibly creative in her solutions leading you, the reader, to wonder: Why didn't I think of that? She gives you tools to examine your own life. An excellent book not to miss!

Get inspired to do more of what brings you joy!

I loved reading Shelley's book! From the outside looking in I would never think Shelley ever had these kinds of struggles. It was refreshing, comforting and also incredibly inspiring - like she got through all of this, so can I! What I'm still left thinking about is the way Shelley thinks so big and holds to her unique, creative vision and just don't take no for an answer. If you have a seemingly wacky, creative idea that you *might* want to turn into a business, this book is for you!

Remarkable! I read it in one day. I had already preordered a copy for my daughter, and now I'm going back to order one for my niece. 'Told my sister about it and she's getting a copy, too. The book was entertaining, informative, inspiring, and compelling. Part memoir, part entrepreneurship "how to", part motivational. Shelley can definitely spin a yarn and her authentic style makes her story easy to connect with. Two thumbs up! I heartily endorse this one!

Empowering!

After finishing “Move the Needle: Yarns from an Unlikely Entrepreneur” by Shelley VanDall Brander I feel empowered. Never has an author captured with such authenticity the challenges, tips and tools for moving from “hobby to jobby” and turning “can’t” into “can”. A “must read” for every women who’s been told her dream or idea is impossible.

Read this book!

This book is inspiring, interesting and motivating. I have so much respect for Shelley and her journey. Readers can take the lessons Shelley learned and apply them to so many situations in their own lives---parenting, business, management and leadership to name a few. Thank you for sharing your story Shelley!

Not just for knitters!

An inspirational book that’s not just for knitters. Follow the author on her winding road to the realization of her dream. With fully relatable anecdotal tales of struggle and triumph, this book helps you believe that any person can achieve if they believe! Believe in yourself, and the power of connectivity between people, and you will arrive where you’re supposed to be. An easy quick read perfect for these challenging times.

If you ever dreamed of owning your own business, this is the book for you.

Loved this book! I like to knit, but I have never been able to go to any of the big yarn shows where the designers show you what was their inspiration for their patterns. There is also much to learn from them. Shelly has brought all of this knowledge to the web so that it is available for all. It took a lot of work and pure old stubbornness to achieve her goals, but she did it! You can too! Thank you, Shelly.

Courage is a skill

I've admired Shelley Brander as the entrepreneur behind Knit Stars, but I had no idea of how creative, brave, and determined she is--nor how she was able to move forward so positively from her mistakes. Move the Needle not only tells Shelley's story in a compelling and enjoyable way, it also provides the rest of us with an accessible roadmap about how to bravely follow our own dreams.

Show up...Do the work...Never give up.

This book is very inspiring. Shelly Brander is definitely a success story, there is no doubt there. She has accomplished much by having a vision, executing a plan and doing the work. I have been wanting to “move the needle” in my own life as I segue into retirement and this book has gIven me a the push that I need.

Inspirational motivating read!

Shelly Brander is an incredible writer. Her personal story, filled with wins and fails, as she plows her way through many obstacles to reach her goals is enlightening and inspiring! There are many lessons to be learned and applied to ones own personal journey to success, whatever that may be. I loved this book and it is very well written. I'm putting it on my bookshelf for reading again and again.

No more fear

Move The Needle is like having a life coach/cheerleader/friend sitting on your shoulder speaking encouraging words just when you need them most. Sometimes the words are gentle and kind and sometimes they are powerful bits of energy sprinkled upon you until you rise up and say to yourself, “ I CAN do this!” as you leap forward conquering another fear. Seize this day! Shake off whatever has held back your dreams. You were made to fly!

This is the first book that I just can't put down!

This book had me from the beginning! I love how she never gave up on her dream. Her business plan and her experience together created this super yarn shop. Now she can share this with the knitting community and inspire others to follow their own passion and dreams.

A genuine journey

When I would settle down to read the book every night I felt like I was sitting down with an old friend. I enjoyed reading about the journey and the struggles along the way of starting Loops. The honesty of the book is what I enjoyed most. In the end, moving forward and being our best selves is all that any of us can do in the world that we are trying to knit together.

Motivational and brings hope!

So encouraging and inspiring, not to start a business.... that isn't a dream of mine, but in so many other ways. Motivates me to perhaps to try College Algebra again to finish a Bachelor's degree and/or resume flute and music study and audition for a local orchestra. I don't feel limited like I did, and Shelley's enthusiasm and positivity shine!

I must admit....

It took me a while to decide to pick this book up and actually read it. I will blame it on Covid as everyone else is blaming everything else on Covid!! However, once I decided to read it, I didn't put it down. I am a knitter, but that is the only shared experience that I have with the author. Her use of self disclosure and experiences were very insightful.

Take the word ‘can’t’ as a challenge

This intriguing, easy to read little book, holds out a life line of inspiration. The author encourages, empowers and entices woman of all ages to hold fast to their dreams until they become reality.

Great Book!

Passion and Compassion

My mantra for 2021 is "Passion and Compassion" which are both qualities that Shelley lives by everyday. She clearly has a passion for knitting people together through this journey of life and she exhibits compassion at every step along the way. Her story is interesting, fun to read, and definitely inspirational. I would recommend for anyone, knitter or not.

Easy to read, inspiring story with lots of practical application!

A book about much more than knitting.

Brander is a fantastic storyteller. She invites us into the real stuff of life as well as her entrepreneurial journey. Her style isn’t cloying platitudes, rather she speaks from the heart with a spirit of encouragement. She reminded me that struggles are not the end of the story.

Hours I will never get back: an objective review from someone not compensated by the author

Or: Shelly Brander - the Shelly Brander story, written by Shelly Brander, sponsored by Shelly Brander. Have the people who gave this book 5 stars never read a book before? One wonders if they actually read it when they left their reviews on January 12. I wish I could get those few hours of my life back, but I can't, so I'm here to help you make wise choices with the hours you have left on this earth. "Move the needle" is the story of one person who desperately wants to be a famous success, who wants to be The Knit Star. And this book is the author's self-proclamation that she has arrived. It's unclear whether this is intended to be a memoir or a business book, and the mixture just leaves both lacking. As a memoir, you get the sense that the author is very 2 dimensional. And the "business advice" is mostly regurgitated statements of the obvious, or in some cases downright terrible. The author talks about what a great job she does of hiring: "Other times, I'd just get a great feeling about somebody's energy, and I'd ask if they were interested in joining us." Any experienced hiring manager (hopefully) knows how to avoid unconscious bias - and it's by doing the opposite of going with your gut. Know what skills you need, make a score card, recruit from a diverse pool, interview applicants and score them based on the skills needed. (And I mention it because she shares a photo of her 100% white "original Loops Troops" staff...) Perhaps most alarming is the anecdote of her son's "diagnosis" with autism - and it's not really clear if it was a doctor who diagnosed her son, or just a random dietician. This is a direct quote from the book: "Keep in mind this was 1997. Long before it was fashionable to have an autistic character in every TV series, book, and movie. At this point in time, my full understanding of autism could be summed up in two words: Rain Man... This was NOT my child. THEY must be wrong. I jumped into action." From the author, I learned that autism is an affliction, and it turns out it can be cured with diet - apparently autism and food allergies are the same thing. And not only did the author "save" her son (that's her word, not mine), but "Dr." Shelly also saved the son of her "Ph.D. psychologist leading Sam's treatment team."** The book drips with privilege on every page, and leaves the reader with that eye-rolling feeling when getting advice from some wealthy white friend who's never had to struggle to make ends meet. "You have more energy than you know." Maybe. But maybe you don't. Maybe you work 2 jobs while homeschooling your kids in a pandemic. Maybe you have fibromyalgia. Maybe you're not wealthy with all the "energy" savings that brings. To hear Shelly Brander tell it, she has changed the world. She's the founder of a "global movement to Knit the World Together." But in the telling, the author seems disingenuous and inauthentic. I get the sense that Shelly is pretending to love yarn and knitting because she sees a market with lots of value she can extract. Most people who have a hobby they enjoy don't talk about it as "weird" or "crazy", unless they're trying to convince outsiders they're somehow notable or exceptional. If you want to read an enjoyable knitting book, pickup something by Elizabeth Zimmermann (like Knitting Around or Opinionated Knitter). And if you want to be an entrepreneur, pickup Disciplined Entrepreneurship: 24 Steps to a Successful Startup by Bill Aulet or Validating Product Ideas by Tomer Sharon, two books that will actually help you be successful. "Move the needle" will leave you with negative ROI, and will leave you wondering how to remove the needle. **I wondered if the publishers knew what was being peddled with their name, so I went to look them up. Turns out the founder "cured" herself from cancer, so...

As a marketing tool, very well done. As a memoir, lacking.

It's obvious Mrs. Brander is a huge advocate of all the marketing buzz words out there. She hits all the high points including emphasis on personal responsibility, promoting control and taking the normal ups and downs and using them towards her goal. And in regards to her goal of making a brand for her niche, she excels. As for a memoir, Mrs. Brander lacks some self awareness that makes this book about a hometown Mid-Western girl 'done good' seem a little over the top and feels unrealistic. I'm sorry, anyone in the mental health industry will tell you, you didn't cure your son's autism. You helped him manage his symptoms as he navigates as an individual on the spectrum. Good for you. Managing symptoms isn't a cure. And your 'worst day ever' wasn't finding out your son's diagnosis, or dealing with your daughter's dyslexia, or even more heart-rending, her diagnosis of anorexia. It was when your dog was attacked. That is a horrible experience. But calling that your worst day? A book can't give the whole picture of a person. This book feels very two-dimensional and I don't feel I know Mrs. Brander at all. I know the marketable, polished version of her but not really her.

Inspiring tale, makes me feel I could move my own mountain!

Read this totally engrossing book from first to last page in one day. Shelley Brander, you are a real inspiration especially because you keep it so real - you share it all with us, from triumphs to heartaches, and my takeaway is that you continue to be willing to be brave in the face of uncertainty. I love the message about what the steps are towards aiming for something, and that you either win or you learn. I nominate you for the sunniest outlook in the troubled year of 2020. Thanks for brining some of this sunshine my way. I was really energized after reading your book and trust I will remain energized weeks later. You gave me a path!

Encouraging, inspiring and entertaining—a super book for these times

When this book was available to purchase, it seemed to be a book for aspiring entrepreneurs, so I was tempted to pass on it since I am not interested in launching a business. However, as comments started filtering out from advanced copy readers, I decided to take the plunge and see what the buzz was about, and I’m glad I did. Shelley has crafted an engaging book about achieving goals, and although her objectives were primarily in the business world, she walks the reader through strategies that can be applied to all manner of challenges. We all need positive things to focus on during these trying days, and immersing yourself in this book is an ideal way to accomplish this goal. Enjoy!

Move the Needle gives us tools to Hurdle over the Bumps in the Road of Life to Reach our Goals

I loved Move the Needle Everyone has Obstacles in Live, in her new book Shelley Brander helps guide everyone into turning those Obstacles into Opportunities. Shelley Brander has build a worldwide online community of knitters long before COVID when this would have seemed impossible. She personally did not take no for an answer but rather everyone said No, she turned into into fuel to try a little harder to reach her goal. Whether they Knit or Not, everyone has a needle they need to move- some personal, some professional, or they know someone who needs some support to do it. Shelley Brander gives you the roadmap to do it in her new book Move the Needle. She shares her personal stories showing her grit and determination from an early age to make things happen to reach their goals. We all have bumps in the road of life. Shelley gives us the motivation to hurdle over those bumps to get to our goals and live our dreams.

Honest and inspirational

Move the Needle is part memoir, part business-inspirational, and just a little bit business-advice. Shelley Brander gets vulnerable about her own struggles, both personal and professional, in the process of moving from a career in branding to being the successful owner of a well-known yarn shop and founder of a whole new animal in the world of online knitting instruction. Her struggles are real and relatable, but her tone throughout is positive, uplifting, and You Can Do It! The reader can identify with her journey, learn from her mistakes, and be encouraged by her example to forge ahead in pursuing whatever dream is beckoning. (Of course, if your dream is yarn-related, you'll find the book even more applicable.)

Stories from an Unlikely Entrepreneur are Amazing even if you don't Knit!

I am a knitter and maker of things and I have run my own business for almost 6 years now. I have read a lot of entrepreneurial books in my time, and this one is one of my favorites. It is not just a dry tome of take action steps but rather a wonderful story of a life, that includes take action steps at the end of each section. If you learn better via story than just you should do this and then that, then check this book out. If you are a maker who has ever dreamed to make money with your art or what you make, then you should get this book. If you love a good yarn and want to learn more about one of the leaders in our industry, than you should get this book. It is such a wonderful read, even with a small infant I managed to read tis in less than a week. Highly recommend.

Move the needle, Move your Life!

Review: Move the Needle a MUST read for everyone not just knitters and crochet lovers! I read the book over the period of 2 very busy weeks and finished last night. The book resonates across every part of your life. You see how to move forward, stop and re-evaluate and move forward again. Shelley VanDall Brander you knock it out of the park with this book!

Un-put-down-able! I read this in one sitting!

Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. I found Shelley's writing - the stories she had to tell and the lessons she had to share - so engaging and interesting, that this book was literally un-put-down-able. I read it in one sitting. From the very first yarn, where four-year-old Shelley makes her way to the grocery store on her tricycle, after being told she “can’t” go, we are given a window into a brilliant, empathic and creative mind, heart and soul that always “finds a way." I personally found this really inspiring and a breath of fresh air in complicated, often negative times. Great stories but also really practical insights that I have taken away from the book and will use in my business and life. If you are looking for inspiration to trust yourself more, take brave action, tap into your passion like never before and make your own path, this is EXACTLY the book you need to read right now. It’s real. It’s powerful. It’s a joyful experience. I loved this book!

How to follow your star

This is an enjoyable read, even though I'm not an entrepreneur or wish to be one myself. I liked that the author shows that one can follow one's own path but not be a jerk whilst doing so, and that a person can achieve a considerable amount by knowing his/her own skills and weaknesses, and working/collaborating with others to complement said skills and weaknesses. It really helps if you are energetic, empathetic, brave, vulnerable, willing to learn and take risks, persistent, with a clear vision of your mission or what you want to achieve. Part memoir and part manual, it's not a lecture but more of a guide on how you could fulfill your own mission.

A life book not a needlework book

While this book appeals to me because I'm a knitter, it's really not about knitting or even owning a yarn store book. It's a life book, multi-tasking like most of us do. There are parts that will resonate with parents of special needs kids, with small business owners, with women who've confronted sexism in the workplace, with anyone who's been told they couldn't do something- basically just about anyone will find something that resonates with their experiences at some point. Shelley is upbeat and optimistic while acknowledging the challenges in these situations. She's a level headed optimist who makes you feel that you can confront the challenges in your own life- but it's not blithe 'everything is going to be easy', more 'the hard work will be worth it'. I'd recommend this book to just about anyone who enjoy positive memoirs or who needs a shot of can-do optimism!

An inspirational guide to advancing your goals.

Move the needle by Shelley Brander is a guide to entrepreneurship and utilizing your creativity and passion to advance your goals. Shelly uses real-life personal examples of the challenges that can occur as you pursue your dream. Using her background in branding she leads us through her personal and professional growth through the challenges and successes as a yarn entrepreneur. She is very relatable as life throws her challenges along the way in her effort to move the needle. Set aside the illusion of perfection. Set yourself on a course that will fail forward. Resolve that no matter what - you will just keep moving and learning and growing. This book will inspire you to move the needle on your own goals and projects.

Shelley shares her values and trusts her intuition to navigate business struggles.

The misconception of "overnight success" is what discourages so many entrepreneurs. In Move The Needle, going on the extraordinary behind-the-scenes adventure of one entrepreneur's unlikely path is a refreshing reminder that business is not easy, often doesn't make sense in the moment, and is a long term game - but is always worth it. Shelley's transparency about her business struggles and the sharing of her values is a powerful reminder for what it takes to own your own business. I read the book in one weekend and absolutely loved that time and time again she turned to her intuition to guide her through situations and decisions to simply take the next best step; it's such an important part of being a leader. Thank you for your courage to share what it REALLY means to have your own business while also doing work you love and raising a family!

Personal, Real, and Inspirational!!

I loved this book! Written more as a memoir than a personal success book, the reader gets to really know the author. It is so refreshing hearing from a leader who doesn't assume she has it all together or that she has attained perfection. She simply tells her story and very generously says, "Here is what I learned from this, and I offer it to you to apply to your own life if you'd like!" This approach makes the book very genuine and more of a dialogue. So many business books come from a place of arrogance, as if the reader is supposed to sit as a sponge at the feet of some infallible guru. I want to interact with the story, and this book becomes more of a living/breathing story. One part I would like to highlight is Ms. Brander's focus on creative communities as sources of belonging and healing. I was moved, almost to tears, with a few of her stories about how simply doing art together brings people out of deep pain and loneliness and into a place of flourishing. It paints a very hopeful picture for what is possible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is simply looking to find where they fit and how to chase dreams in a very complicated world!

Excellent business success story read by the author

I just finished the audible book. It was very worthwhile. Shelley read it herself snd has a nice voice for radio. The story is very inspiring and at the end realized Shelley was the success story Jeff Walker exemplified in the PLF class. Great book highly recommended if you enjoy inspirational stories, Business development & strategy, business and personal success stories or just want to read a good non fiction book.

An unexpected and engaging insight into the evolution of an entrepreneur

Many people feel knitting is an old fashioned, homely, Holly Hobby-type craft. The word gumption is an old fashioned, homely, Holly Hobby-type word. Know who isn't old fashioned, homely, or Holly Hobby-ish? Shelley VanDall Brander! From a young age, Shelley didn't take no for an answer. Her natural curiosity and drive, her quest for knowledge and a way to find a crafting home, took gumption. From that first trip on her tricycle, to her travels across the world, Shelley has fearlessly paved the way for knitters of all levels to find acceptance, personal growth and a sense of community. In her book, Move The Needle, we are privileged to follow Shelley on her journey of learning to knit, making her way through the "man's world" of advertising, creating and raising a family, building community, and ultimately, achieving an incredible, internationally respected, knitting/yarn business. Shelley is like a great friend who just happens to be a life/business coach. Read and enjoy this engaging, inspiring book!

Just the inspiration needed at just the right time!

If you need a good boost of inspiration, this is the book for you. I'm a knitter, so related very closely with the author's experiences, but the words she writes are for anyone who needs a good dose of motivation. Very easy writing style, so it's like spending time chatting with a friend! This book arrived at the perfect time for me and I think we all can use some hope and encouragement after 2020 has forced us to really examine where we'd like to be in life..

Turning Passion into Profit

I first became familiar with Shelly Brander through her Facebook presence. Her smile, her positive attitude, her friendly approach leave the impression that she is doing something she loves and I could not help but be drawn in. “ Move The Needle” documents the transition from the recognition of that passion to the establishment of a successful business and creation of a worldwide community of knitters. Shelly’s easygoing, conversational style allows her to present her challenges, pitfalls, opportunities and successes into a thought provoking context for people considering turning a “hobby into a jobby.”

A must read for entrepreneurs and yarn lovers

I LOVED this book.I read it in one sitting. I am a knitter that has subscribed to Shelley’s knit stars series. I have learned so much from those series and was curious about the creator of such a unique experience. I really felt like I got to know Shelley readying this book. I found her story to be inspiring and hopeful. I loved the story of the cashmere scarf and how it opened a door for Shelley to begin her dream in the fiber/yarn world. I am amazed at how much Shelley has been able to do with her business while taking care of her families needs. She has incredible amounts of energy and creativity. A must read for entrepreneurs of any kind. Thank you Shelley for sharing your story so honestly and openly.

If she can do it, I can do it.

Move the needle is a heartwarming, inspirational book. Mrs. Brander shares her journey from a first attempt at her knitting passion to a career in marketing to becoming a successful yarn store entrepreneur to the creator of a worldwide knitting movement. Her desire to knit the world together is revolutionizing the knitting craft. The author’s transparency gives us a realistic view of her successes, failures, and bumps along the way to turning her passion into her jobby (job + hobby). Reading this book is like sitting down and having a cup of coffee with someone who cares about your success and happiness. She will inspire you to follow your dreams, whether is it raising children, learning a craft or starting a global business. Be aware that once you start reading this book, you will not want to put it down.

Excellent motivation

I have been a subscriber to the knit Stars online knitting class and was looking forward to this read. I ended up listening to the audio version and it was so enjoyable! The book is infused with Shelly's down to earth perspective and motivation. I would highly recommend this to any creative person especially if you are thinking of taking your creativity into the marketplace.

Make your dreams a reality.

The author has a clear way of pulls reader in and making them a part of her life story. This is what people want to hear: how to develop a true self and move forward in life with a clear purpose. Being an entrepreneur and moving forward when being told your dreams were not possible is motivation for many to take the chance and realize their own dreams; learn to take the chance and move forward. Your dreams are worth becoming a reality! Shelley VanDall Brander is proof you can do it and will give you resources and help to accomplish it.

Creativity and perseverance

Shelly writes of her entrepreneurial journey from copy editing to yarn store ownership. She is an energetic individual who is highly creative and is fearless when she has a dream. She writes her very personal journey with hardships along the way that do not deter her fearless, "I can” attitude. It is a quick read with a few business nuggets along the way.

Memoir meets call to action.

Move the Needle: Yarns from an Unlikely Entrepreneur by Shelley Brander is memoir meets call to action. The lessons/insights that resonated with me: - NO can be a great motivator - We can do WAY more than we think we can - Follow your dreams/gut - Working for yourself is awesome but still a LOT of work - Push yourself and take chances - Always think creatively! I have read multiple inspirational/“self help” books and work with a coach. I also work for myself. Many of these lessons are not foreign to me. What makes this book stand out? Not just the yarn (all the yarn) but the voice of a strong woman who put herself out there and found success in the male saturated Ad/Marketing world of the 80s/90s. Knitting is life to me and something that I hope to turn into my main gig. This book gives me hope that it could be possible!
