The story of the Mayflower is one of adventure, courage, and destiny. The Mayflower was the ship that launched a nation. She left from England in September of 1620, carrying 102 English Separatists to a new life, one that came with the freedom to practice their religious beliefs as they saw fit. These Pilgrims had the courage of their convictions. They had already potentially faced execution for practicing their beliefs and now they were willing to uproot their lives, their families, and their homes, to sign contracts of indentured servitude for them and their children - all to find what they called freedom in a foreign land.

Inside you will read about...

✓ How Religious Upheaval Shaped American Colonization
✓ The Ship that Launched a Nation’s Future
✓ The Contract and the Crossing
✓ Arrival in America
✓ Early Life in the Colonies

✓ The Ideology that Shaped a Nation

Their journey was one of courage and destiny as they forged ahead, crossing an ocean to settle in a harsh environment. They faced storms and dangerous adversaries to get to the New World. There, they built a life based on the values they held sacred, and those values would form the foundation of a new nation almost a century later. This eBook tells the story of their adventure in a concise yet thorough manner that is packed with historical detail and enjoyable to read.

Retelling of Historical Journey Loses Its Way

There is much to tell about the voyage of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims who set sail in 1620, and this would have made a great subject for an Hourly History book. Unfortunately, this book does not provide the reader with a good value. One third of the book is occupied with two subjects: a discussion on religion in Europe and the splits with the Catholic religion, and a list of all the passengers on the Mayflower. While freedom to choose and practice their religion caused Pilgrims to make the decision to leave England, this discussion on religion is big enough to merit its own book. The decision to list the passengers only pads the book’s size and serves no purpose in a book that is attempting to provide an outline of the facts in an hour. Another 15% of the book contains the References and the obligatory back matter of the book (selling more books and asking for reviews). While all this is important, readers are left with only half of the book to properly relate the story of the Mayflower. With all this extra and unnecessary stuff and fluff, important items are left out or given short shrift. The First Thanksgiving, a celebration that has been romanticized, is related in a few paragraphs and does not match other history books (In gratitude for their assistance with farming, the Pilgrims invited the Wampanoags for a feast, and were surprised when they showed up with 90 braves. Fortunately, a harvest feast was also customary for the Wampanoags, who contributed to the feast. This is contrary to the Hourly History account of the accidental arrival of 90 Natives due to gunfire). While I welcome the references, the author potentially changes history by ignoring his own references. A conversation on a website based on oral information (Reference 20 – “What Really Happened at the First Thanksgiving” pub. 2012) conflicts with Reference 5 (William Bradford, “Mourt’s Relation or Journal of the Plantation at Plymouth” – pub. 1622). The author favors the Internet article over a book published 400 years ago. Even if the author disagreed with Bradford’s book, presenting both sides and allowing readers to make their own decision would have been a better choice in a history book. Unfortunately, this is not the only instance where the author reinterprets facts and introduces what could be considered as opinionated statements. The Hourly History biography states they “…focus on publishing history books that are concise, straightforward and take no longer than one hour to read.” This book is missing important information and provides many opinions, and the sidebars make it anything but concise. While I am a fan of the Hourly History series, this is one book I do not recommend. Two stars.

It's An Overview

Mayflower was an easy read from start to finish. It's a rather short read though. I didn't notice any glaring grammatical errors, so no complaints there. I knocked off a star though because it does use the BCE/CE (Before/Common Era) designations instead of BC/AD (Before Christ/Anno Domini). I'd much rather see more people give God the glory rather than scientists, but that's a personal preference. The author did keep his own personal opinions out of the work though, which I appreciated. Also the references are always good to see. All in all though, it's an overview. The church history rundown was nice, as were the reasons why the Separatists left for Leiden and then America. I also appreciated the dimensions of the Mayflower, its armaments, and the conditions they had to endure during their long journey. It was also interesting how the Separatists had brought military equipment with them. The stuff about Thomas Hunt and the Franciscan friars was also interesting. If you go into reading this expecting bullet points of what happened, then you should come away having learned some things. If you go into it expecting a thoroughly detailed recounting, then you'll end up disappointed.

Very comprehensive explanation of who the pilgrims were and their voyage on the Mayflower

I really like this book because it explained the history of the pilgrims starting with the history of Christianity and the splintering of Christianity into various groups. Also you learn the difference between the pilgrims and the Puritans. I also found it interesting that there were a number of ships called the Mayflower during that period. The book also provides the names of the 102 passengers on Christopher Joneses Mayflower. I didn't realize that the passengers were indentured servants. The book covers a lot of ground in a short period of time and appears to be very comprehensive. Lastly the book has an extensive bibliography. This is my second or third hourly history book that I have read and I intend to read more of these books.

Like about 10 percent of Americans

Like about 10 percent of Americans, one of my ancestors arrived on this ship. Many other of my ancestors came later by covered wagon. The Mayflower passengers were narrow minded, but we are talking about the early 17th century. The Mayflower passengers provides a likely accurate insight as to who they were and their lives aboard this ship, in which tragically few survived beyond the first winter, once they docked in Plimoth. We should read about the early white ancestors and the indigenous ancestors of North America, especially the now U.S.A., because we have little appreciation of the difficulties of earlier centuries -- difficulty surviving the climate, the disease, poverty, starvation. We have much to thank the indigenous peoples here, because the tribes taught the Mayflower passengers the three sisters of planting, Native American groups in North America: winter squash, maize (corn), and climbing beans (typically tepary beans or common beans). The indigenous peoples arrived on North and South American shores some 15,000 years ago or more, in several migrations, and we have much, much, much reason to thank them.

Wonderful recap of Mayflower and Plymouth Plantation founding

If you are liking for a nice recap of the history you recall learning in school, but know you've forgotten so e if the details from, I recommend this. I enjoyed the writing style / presentation of facts - informative, interesting, never talked down to me... and appreciated the way context was given (Luther, and the Protestant Reformation, lest we forget why some were dealing with religious persecution) Early on a deceptively simple question is posed : What would cause people to uproot their lives, their families, and their homes, to leave the known with all the comfort that provides, in order to face untold dangers on a perilous journey to a strange land that may never yield what they are seeking? A better life,... This booklet explores who took a chance on creating that better life, and how they went about it.

The Mayflower

This is a short story about the 102 English people that braved the Mayflower Ship in September 1620, just before the cold hard winter hit. These people left everything behind their families, friends and homes. They packed a few belongings in a trunk for freedom in a foreign land to worship and live together as a group not knowing what was ahead of them. This book is an outstanding review of true facts describing the ship, the journey and the perils of life after arriving on our soil in America. This is a fast interesting overview of our very beginnings. I enjoyed reading this story again.

Lots of information that we should know

The 1620 Mayflower is mentioned frequently on TV, newspapers, books, and speeches, but few people really know its history. In just an hour of reading the 53 pages of the Hourly History short book about the event, readers can learn much. The book tells about the Protestant Reformation that led to the Mayflower, how the Mayflower shaped future American history, about the crossing and arrival pf the pilgrims at Plymouth, what prompted them to risk their lives, what was their religious belief, how did the pilgrims pay for their voyage, how half of the 102 pilgrims who arrived in America on the Mayflower died during the first year, how the pilgrims had to leave the land and live on the Mayflower during their first winter in America, that they had no intention of creating a nation, the early years of life of the pilgrims, their associations with Indians, about the settlers who came after them, the origin of Thanksgiving, and much more.

Not a high quality book

This book was a disappointment. It felt more like a high school paper than a book. There are a number of factual mistakes and not a lot of depth. I was surprised to see a list of names of the people on the Mayflower in such a short book. This material is interesting but does not belong to a book that meant to be a quick overview where the pages should have been used to describe events, not names. In addition, the author spends a good number of pages on promoting other works and asking for reviews. All together the filler materials leave an impression that the author tried to generate as many pages as possible with as little effort as possible. This is not a high quality work. Ali Julia review

Superficial

This reads like a high school or freshman college history report. If you have little prior knowledge or if you want an overview, then this will be fine. If you are looking for insights, read William Bradford or another in depth history. I was very pained (I growled out loud) by the writer not knowing the difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Even though the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582, England and her colonies did not adopt it until 1752. The writer stated for some unknown reason a record in January was recorded as 1620 instead of 1621, even though the Pilgrims landed and signed the Mayflower Compact in November 1620. Any decent historian would not have questioned January 1620 following November 1620 or would have explained the anomaly caused by the change of calendars.

Worth the read.

It is hard to imagine how difficult this crossing must have been considering the cramped quarters, the storms they encountered, no privacy, no bathroom facilities, food in short supply, no heat or air conditioning. And then to finally arrive at their destination in the wintertime and sickness was taking its toll, reducing the original 102 persons to 53. I have a better understanding now of the differences between Pilgrims and Puritans - I used to think they were interchangeable but now I understand they were two different groups.

Great synopses of a variety of historical topics

"Hourly History" is a series of short books, essays really, about a variety of historical topics. Although the writing style is occasionally sophomoric, and sometimes the facts presented vary from my understanding of history, they are intended to be brief introductions on topics and people that most have heard about but know very little about. They are a wonderful starting point for exploring historical cultures and events, and often lead to more in depth reading. Although brief (they really generally do take less than an hour to read), they are stimulating and enjoyable. I am grateful that they are being given away or sold at such a very low price, so that many people can enjoy and understand our collective past. I recommend them to everone with an interest in history.

A well written account

Not only does this story include the details of the early pilgrimage into the US mainland, but includes alternative accounts of the story of Thanksgiving. Many wish to believe the romanticism of the classical Thanksgiving summary, but it may not be the true or the only explanation. Times were desperate in the 1600s and it's logical to understand the measures that were taken in pursuit of freedom from an oppressive motherland and trespass into a new land that the Native Americans already resided for thousands of years.

The Plight of the Pilgrims.

Fascinating reading. Essential for understanding the birth of the USA. The Mayflower had 102 passengers with no bathroom. List of all passenger names which is good for family research. Learned that the Pilgrims and the Puritans were two separate groups.

I nice short history

A very good short history for those who do not know the history of the Pilgrims. It is a nice short read. I do know the history very well, and have written a similar story. It is good to supplement normal history, but there are more complete ones around, and Library of America is publishing a new book in November 2020. Otherwise, it is a nice short review.

The best one-hour summary

I've read so far. The coverage was much broader than I anticipated it would be, yet the details given were more specific, also. The author has done a most admirable job of condensing this subject into this very interesting, even page-turning, 60-minute read. If at all interested in the Mayflower I strongly recommend your reading this book.

Mayflower

The ship who carried the people from England to a new world discovered in 1492 buy the Spainsh lead to the creation of the United States Of America which is going stronger than ever today thanks to preservernce and hard workforce that makes people good at being in the workforce and making money. I recommend this book for a quick read.

Very informative in brief and simple language

The readers will learn more about the history of religious division before learning the core value and philosophy of the foundation of the United States of America, set by the Pilgrims of Mayflower. The book also tells details about the famous ship Mayflower along with the difference between the terms of Pilgrims and Puritans. This one’s the first Hourly History book with Bibliography I’ve ever read, making the book’s abundant information more reliable. Plus the author’s point is quite balanced.

Disgusting Indoctrination?

Chapter Seven states "their beliefs provided a foundation for the separation of church and state that exists in the Constitution of the United States today." Not accurate. The words " Separation of Church and State" DO NOT appear any where in the sacred document. It is not even implied. It is immoral and frankly offensive to educated American citizens that the author was so lazy in their research.

Sloppy With Facts

When a book gets commonly known facts wrong, is there really any reason to read and trust the rest? Chapter 1 claims that "none of [Henry VIII's] unions ever produced a male heir", ignoring Henry's immediate successor, his son, Edward VI. The next paragraph calls Henry's daughters Mary I and Elizabeth I stepsisters, they were half-sisters.

The Mayflower Journey

I, like most Americans, have a generalized idea of the Mayflower's voyage and the separatist from middle school history courses. I found this book to be informative yet succinct enough to not dredge along the information it would take to cover the subject matter fully. This book gave a good overview and many details about the life and times of religious wars in England and Europe throughout time and the reasoning for the actual voyage to the new world. This is the second book I've read since finding Hourly History a few days ago and I am hooked. I am a big fan of history and look forward to reading more from them.

Good Read

This was a summary of the Mayflower story that covered the facts well. The brave people who lived this history are true heroes. I really appreciate this synopsis as it tells an important story for us all. A little more commentary on Native Americans than necessary.

One of the Best

Very well written, gives an excellent summary of the religious context and build up at the time. It is difficult to imagine the social stresses at the time due to religious affiliations, unless you live in religious intolerant countries today such as most Muslim countries and increasingly in the west.

A Clearer Look at Our History

Most of us have a rudimentary knowledge of this story from our school days. But I do not recall being taught both the good things and the bad things that were done by those who survived the first year. Thank you for giving a clearer picture of what happened and what was done by all who were involved in this important story. It is appreciated.

Waste of time.

This book was written with the author’s apparent disdain of the pilgrims religious beliefs. The pilgrims were not of the same mindset and behaviors as other groups, but one would not know that from this book. Also the author in a very modern way instead of using B.C and A.D. he used BCE and CE. I loathe subtle indoctrination. (I also loathe blatant indoctrination to atheistic beliefs.) This seems to be another attempt to rewrite history. I wish I could delete this book from my kindle and cloud.

Interesting

An interesting - quick - look at the Mayflower ... and accompanying circumstances. I'm still not sure just how the (original and subsequent) trips were financed - and what costs were involved. Strange how something as inconsequential as 'religion' had (and continues to have) an impact on humans.

Decent Overview

A look from the Reformation through the Puritans - with the focus being the Pilgrims, the Mayflower and Plymouth. As with most of these books in the series, there’s a lot of top level picture painting but little opportunity to dig into detail. A good overview of the times and events.

Worth reading

It took me more than an hour to read this book, I'm a slow reader. I thought the book was great. It gave a basic history of the Mayflower, in a easy reading manner. It should be used in high school history classes. If nothing else it gives the basics so you can answer the Jeopardy clues.

Feels like you're in a history lesson

This was a short, informative book about the Mayflower. I had learned most of it in history classes, but had forgotten many of the details. It was a good refresher course, but was a bit dry reading.

Great short read

I've never been much of a reader, but have always liked history, especially american history. My wife recently bought me a kindle fire and loaded it up with some history books. I really enjoyed reading the mayflower each night before bed. Its a pretty short book which was great for me as it kept my attention. I wake up very early for work, usually about 4:00, so I go to bed early and reading a few pages each night helped me fall asleep. Thanks for the good read!

Very disappointed in this book.

I purchased this book as a gift for an adult. From the information that I read on line about it and the price of the book, it seemed that the book would be an appropriate gift for this person. When the book arrived and I opened the package I was shocked and disappointed in the actual book. The book appears to be geared more for children than adults.

Great Mayflower Information

Having sone ancestors who came on the Mayflower made me want to read this book. Any insight I can get about these brave people is always a help to me. I found this information very interesting and am grateful and appreciate the mention of some of the later ships where I night be able to find more of my kin.

Interesting and informative

I enjoyed this short but important time in history. Diseases and famine took many lives of both the settlers and natives. The natives suffered worse.

Good basic overview.

The book gives a good, very basic, overview of the Pilgrims, and their move to the New World.

I really enjoyed hia read!

I am a history buff, so I got this book and really, really enjoyed it. The writing was well done, and the research wonderful. Explanations of differences between settlement groups was clear and honest. This is not your childhood textbook. Many thanks to the author for offering it free on Kindle. I will look forward to more writings from him.

Voyage to Destiny

"Mayflower: A History from Beginning to End" is an informative book about what it took to make a voyage across an ocean to an new land, all to avoid religious oppression. This book also described what took place when these pilgrims arrived at their new home.

Great book I sure did enjoy this book of how ...

Great book I sure did enjoy this book of how our Great country, started and how we got here. It makes you really appreciate what people went through to get here, many lost their lives, hard times they faced, cold, hunger, illness . And out at sea wondering if they would ever see land.

I loved

This book has relevance for both myself and my family as we're descended from Sarah Eaton. I would encourage you to Read this as a Supplement to American Education.

We have left what they were willing to die to secure.

A very well written essay with good insights. It is amazing and inspiring what our forefathers endured for that which we take for granted or outright shun. America will regret having left it.

Excellent. Read it.

I love this book. I am a descendant of Richard Warren and this short book gave me a part of history I had no knowledge of. It is short and easy to read. Everybody should read this book, it is the beginning of the great country the US is today.

Who Were The Pilgrims?

Well summarized. Conclusions are very good re effect on the Native population and the future colonies. Very readable, as usual. I recommend it for anyone, but especially for JHS students.

Very interesting

Well written and informative. The author told the story from both points of view. I am thoroughly satisfied with this title.

Good book.

Very interesting religious background on what drove the Pilgrims to come to America. Clarifies the conditions and challenges that the Pilgrims faced on their journey and their first year in America. Highly recommend.

A great little "time machine".

A nice little read. Not a big scholarly work of course as that is not its intention. It gives you a quick dose of the basics. The references in the bibliography are a Nice touch and very useful to those who wish to go beyond thus work. Overall this is a great way to spend an hour In the past.

History of first encounter beach

Interesting history of the pilgrims leaving for religious reasons

Ok... For an hour long read.

I found the book to be very political correct. The author went out of his way to make the book pleasant to a modern reader instead of the writing of the reality of the time. It was ok for hour long read.

Five Stars (Essay / 511 Kindle Locations)

Concise history of the Pilgrims who went to America on the Mayflower. As this is more about the Pilgrims themselves than the trip or colony there is a lot of talk about religion in Europe and the reasons the pilgrims moved to America.

Great information

Very informative and short! I love that! I have aadd so this was great for me. I traced an ancestor back to that time period on a ship called, The James, so that made it a special read for me. Thank you.

Interesting

Interesting to know more about the Mayflower. Short read but worth it.

Informative and Interesting

This book isn't long but the time you spend reading it will be well spent. The author writes clearly and keeps the history true and interesting . I have no complaints other than wanting to read more.

Thanks!

As a descendant, this is a fun read.

Very informative with its 400th anniversary coming up

For someone with Mayflower roots, this was an informative and interesting book! With the 400th anniversary of its journey, it's very apropos.

Just about the right length to help me understand the basics.

Concise history which helped me to distinguish between Separatists (Pilgrims) who wanted no part of the Church of England and the Puritans (who came several years later) who had strong differences in theology with the COE but only wished to live out their faith freely as they believed.

excellent summary

Has great list of references that enhances value of the book.

Very good

A must read for everybody

Satisfied

A good histor y in my opinion.

Should be called the “Winslow family story” on the Mayflower

It is a good story but only goes into one family, the Winslow’s. I am related to several others but not them. That was disappointing!

Great History

This book is short and to the point. Good description of people and voyage across along with hardships encountered. Recommend this for history folks.

After reading ten or so pages, I decided to ...

After reading ten or so pages, I decided to quit. I understand that you wish to write books that can be quickly read, but in my opinion, this results in such a rapid flow of data, that there is little time for reflection.

Adversity, Courage and Destiny

These short one hour reads are great. They provide more detail than when we were in school. The Pilgrims and Puritans preserved through a long trip, arriving at the onset of winter, lack of food and half their group perishing. They did it all for freedom!

Short and concise.

Short and concise account of the Pilgrims and journey of The May flower. Good overview on reasons for leaving Europe and effect on native populations.

True telling

Thorough telling that corrects much of the story

Who not the Why

In my opinion there was not enough information about the Pilgrams/Puritans and too much about the religious affiliations.

Great read!

This book was very helpful in understanding the start of our great country!

Quick insight

Brief introduction into early settlement life. Hard to imagine the hardships and perils. The birth of European entitlement in America.

A great primer

A great dip into a subject that has been romanticised for centuries. The brevity makes it easier to sink into.

Recommended!

Good read! Written for adult readers but now considered for juveniles. This is undoubtedly due to the lack of sex or gratuitous "blood and guts". A good, clean adventure!

I enjoyed it.

This book had a lot of information a lot of us don't know about the Mayflower. I enjoyed it.

Great History Lesson

I learned a lot about the political times and reasons why the colonists came to America. Very informative a d easy to understand.

Interesting account of the pilgrim's first years

Wow there's a lot I didn't know about that Hardy group of people

Educational and touching!

I have nothing bad to say about this book except that fact that it wasn't longer. I find myself not knowing all of the common knowledge that I feel that I should and this book is full of great information. It's educational and touching!

Knowing how America came to be.

I hated history when I was growing up but I'm interested now that I am almost sixty years old and this book helped me to learn about how America was formed so thank you

Very concise in informative.

Very concise and informative!

This is a good book to get a taste of what the people on the Mayflower faced.

This book gives the main reason that the Pilgrims left England for the new World. It also showed the hardships they faced on their arrival. It is a short book, so I plan on finding another book to get more of the details.

Good Resource

This book did a great job of clarifying the similarities and differences between the pilgrims and puritans. This book also gives a lot of details about the Mayflower ship’s design to help readers visualize the circumstances.

An overview of the shaky start settling in a new land.

An excellent overview, but the emotional impact of the suffering and loss of life could be stronger.

History Retold!

Very informative material.

What prompts a group of people to undertake a dangerous journey to an unknown destination?

I love to read and reminisce about past historical events that shaped the world we live in today. This comprehensive book showcased one such historical event that shaped the USA: The landing of the Mayflower in 1620 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Hourly History does a great job explaining how the courage and conviction of the earliest settlers in America shaped how the USA is today. I highly recommend everyone fascinated with USA history to read this book about our nation's earliest beginnings.

Everyone American should know more of our history.

I liked the book very much.it was easy to read and clear to understand.

Three Stars

Read one story about the Mayflower, read them all.

No in-depth history

I wasn't expecting, what was essentially, a pamphlet, with just the high-lights mentioned. No in-depth history

Good, quick read.

Easy to read. Concise. Good explanations.

Great history !!

The one thing I found wrong in this book though on the whole it was good, was that they stated it is in the Constitution about separation of Church & State; however, actually it was in a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote. It is not in the Constitution. I remembered a lot of what the book said in history classes that I had when I was in school. Too bad they aren't teaching that now in public schools. Thanks.

The Mayflower Pilgrims

Having warched a dkcumentary about the voyage of the Mayflower and the early settlement I wanted to know more and found this brief factual account very useful. There are some inaccuracies, eg that Henry VIII produced no male heir; and there were some gaps, eg an explanation of what became of the indentured servitude contract when they landed so far north of their destination, or how they repaid the London Company. Notwithstanding these issues it was a very useful I troduction to the subject.

Note - Abbreviated Size Book

My fault for not paying attention but misses that this was a very small (page count) book. A bit overpriced for the size.

Saints and Strangers

It was very informative and easy to understand. The historical facts were written in laymen's terms. It was a great introduction and motivator for someone who may like to read on the subject more in depth.

Good digestible chunks of knowledge.

I knew nothing of the Mayflower voyage prior to this book, so it was great jumping in. The two elements that make it seem most historically reliable are the numerous sources listed at the end, and the impartial perspective of the writer. I'm looking forward to reading more of these.

Great informative book, a must read.

I love books like this concise,to the point, informative and easy to understand and read. I love history and books like this make me want to keep on reading more and more.

Useful and nicely done

Thanks for this - really useful and easy to read on the Kindle App. Well done.

Informative and Great Reading

During the course of this book, the author discussed Puritans vs. Pilgrims. I'd like to go a step further. The Puritans never really left the Church of England. They were Separatists in the sense that they wanted to reform the Church of England and get rid of the Catholic Church rituals and statuary. Because they remained within the bounds of the Church of England, they did not have to 'give up' their homes to move (to Holland, as the Pilgrims did) for religious freedom. The Pilgrims, on the other hand, protested against the Catholic Church and the Church of England. They moved to Holland because of their beliefs and were poorer people than the Puritans (who didn't need to move to a foreign land). Thus, by the time the Pilgrims left Holland, they had no choice but to sign letters of servitude (for 7 years) in order to earn the fare to America. No matter how we slice it, leaving the known world for new, untried land was certainly a test of fortitude and grit. To move with so few resources was an act of bravery or ignorance, depending on your thoughts in hindsight. To make such overwhelming changes in one's life over one's religion is a testament to their faith in what they were doing and the power of their faith in God. When the reader thinks about it, how many of us would do what the Pilgrims did? Not many, I suspect. I thought this would be a nice review of the Mayflower story. Instead, I found new things I didn't know (there were 27 ships called the Mayflower afloat at the time of 'our' Mayflower). I was delighted to see the names of all those who traveled on the Mayflower. Great reading.

Very interesting concise version of history

As a descendant of the Mayflower voyage and knowing very little about it--I enjoyed reading this concise history of it. I thought it was well-written and very interesting.

expensive

Expensive for such a small book, read it in half hour,

Good summary

Concise and to the point. Covers the reason for leaving England and what happened in the first few years of colonization.

Worth reading

This is very nice history book which tells about early American settlers. A very precise and well explained book. I recommend all to read to understand how America was built from scratch.

good stuff

good readvand historic value

A brief read.

This is a quick resume of the reason the pilgrims left England, their journey and early settlement. There is some repetition and little detail in terms of the individuals concerned.

Book as described

Book as described

Not a real book! Looks like a homemade photocopy!

Looks like a home photocopied version of a real book. Photo on the cover is very pixalated, very thin and not a book at all in my mind. More of a pamphlet! Returned for a refund.

Good read

interesting read.short story doesn't take long to read. Definitely recommend.good for kids as simple and short.for beginner's I'd say :)

Informative

Found it really interesting and straight to the point. Which I think was the whole point of it. Nice one

I expected an interesting history book, all I got was a pamphlet!

I felt this book was really good in its content and coverage and could easily help ...

This is a short summary of the events surrounding the Dutch ship, The Mayflower, famous for carrying around 100 pilgrims from England to the New World on a very dangerous journey across the Atlantic. The book started well, explaining the various conflicting views within Christianity, how the pilgrims differed in their views and their desire to remain English but be able to practice their religion without the threat of heresy. The book then talks about the Mayflower ship, the survivors of then journey, the establishment of the colony in the New World, the eventual conflict with the natives and touched upon the formation of the United States of America in the conclusion. I felt the book had a right mix of focus on the various events, and to be honest, I had very little knowledge on the whole episode before reading this book. The book went step by step in a proper manner, explaining who are the pilgrims, why they demanded a separate state and what were their beliefs. The book then talked about the conditions in the ship and the eventual lifestyle in the New World. So, I felt this book was really good in its content and coverage and could easily help you understand the events surrounding The Mayflower voyage. However, I felt that the title was a bit of a misnomer, the book focused very little on the actual voyage in itself and focused on the events before and after the voyage. Despite the fact that this journey is considered one of the most iconic moments in American history, I would have preferred it if there was a little more about the voyage in itself. Based on what I have stated, I would award the book a rating of four on five.

A Better Work from Hourly History

I am getting these books free of cost. I have raised many objections on the contents of the titles by Hourly History on my blog. Some of my major objections are: They do not have the bibliography. They do not raise the right questions as per the craft of history. There are some more objections. However, in the case of the above two objections, they get neutralised in the case of this title. They have provided the bibliography. They have given the right questions of history while talking about the Mayflower History. You may criticise these titles on many points. However, the finest thing about these titles is that the publisher is taking up the titles on major known personalities, frame appropriate chapters and complete their content within in 40 to 50 pages. I have compared each title with contents on the similar entries on Wikipedia. I have shown the similarity with the contents of the Wikipedia. I have written about them on my blog. However, in the case of this title, you find more content on Wikipedia but a good history in this title. I am wondering about the policy of pricing these titles. I am getting it free of cost. But, the price of the titles for a regular buyer is in the range of ₹199 to ₹ 210. I do not know if anyone would like to buy 50 to 60 pages for that amount even if in each title they provide a bonus of free books. I have not commented on other titles by the same publisher. But, in the case of this title, I am motivated to write my comments.

storia americana

Una pagina di storia americana, ma anche di storia del Cristianesimo, la Mayflower fu infatti la nave che trasportò nel diciassettesimo secolo i padri pellegrini, perseguitati, dall'Inghilterra in America.

The Birth of America

Book with a lot insightful information... Particularly on Protestant Movement in Europe. And its Aftermath.Special Thanks to Author for describing the Story in very Lucid Fashion...It will give a nostagic Experience of All the Offspring of theose Early Ancestors...This Book's Reading really Riveting Experience......MM.Rao, Mumbai, India

Nice general overview.

A goal overview with some interesting information. Could use another edit but nothing serious. More details would help generate more interest although more may not be recorded/available.

Accurate!

Tells history as it actually was.

Five Stars

good overview of the ship and life at england at that time

Clear consise

A bit dry in that it is what it is a historical narration of the facts as presented. That said some of those facts are quite fascinating and understanding the background to the reasons for the migration in the first place us important. Personally I like a good yarn with action and in this case it was not to be but the true historical facts were most of the time sufficient

OK but lacks depth

Somewhat sketchy account. We don't learn much about the backgrounds of individuals and there's no real sense of what drove them to join the Mayflower

Short and concise

Very easy to read and understand. But in Scotland at that time religion differences were more tolerated.the Scots didn't arrive in number for a few more years

Dissapointed!

The actual depth of the book is approx 1/4 of an inch not even 10mm thick and will be read in 2-3 hours max - very dissapointed!!
