A Must Have.
To those who post dire warnings. Umm, no. Stop and read the book first, not just speculate on the premise and contents. Is it ethical to stop a crime? Yes. Is it ethical to turn your back on crimes against the earth and its sentient inhabitants? No. The book is a must have for any socially aware occultist. It's well written, easy to follow, and thoroughly researched. The book is a keeper. Thank you, Michael M Hughes.
Must have for Magical Resister
You don't have to be a Witch to resist. However if you decide to do it magically Michael tells you how in this boldly written book with all bases covered. The first two chapters are devoted to the history of Magical Resistance! Against Hitler/Nazis. He has much info that was new to me. Like I said this book covers all bases. He explains why any body of any religion can do Magical Resistance. He explains "toolkit" for Magical Activism , the difference between Offensive & Defensive magic. He has prep rituals & breath work and other things to take care of yourself mentally & Psychically . He explains how to make a personal mojo bag and a "power oil" for your rituals. He has all the basics in here as well as Anti-Fascist spell, anti NRA spell etc. He ends with a full appendix! Wow! As others have said "this book is a keeper" Its also printed on good stock with a good font I read it in a day. Very good book highly recommended.
If ever a book needed writing, this is it.
First, I want to thank Michael Hughes, not only for this book, but for being instrumental in organizing a movement. What is happening in our world and country today is without precedent, in terms of pure evil being unleashed on our land. And the fact that millions don't even see it, when it is so blatant and so unquestionably evil has had me wondering for some time if dark forces have been at work, and have been using this Administration to rain down destruction: on our country, on the international community, and on the earth herself. And that if these dark forces are not using a very potent form of glamour magick to make everything that is so obviously wrong appear so utterly right to so many. For some time, I have felt this, but what could I do? I am only one small person. The urgency of working to save our country and save our planet has certainly been at the forefront of my mind...but somehow, just going to vote didn't seem like enough. Didn't seem to address the urgency of the situation. Which make no mistake, is dire. People are dying. Sea life is dying. The Great Barrier Reef is dying. Arctic mammals are dying. The ocean itself is dying. And if it dies, we all die. There is just no getting around that fundamental fact. Our country is committing utterly reprehensible acts every single day. Treating our fellow human beings as if they were garbage. Making it more difficult for those in need to receive help. Suggesting that those who sacrificed greatly should be forgotten now that they need us to step up for them. Insulting longtime loyal allies while bromancing some of the most despicable and cruel world leaders currently on this planet. Allowing our children to be mowed down by assault weapons at school, all to preserve some wacko's right to own whatever lethal weapon he chooses, without constraint of any kind...even if he is mentally ill and unstable. Everything seems like it is upside down. What used to be right is now wrong. What used to be wrong is now right. None of it makes any sense. But there were many of us out there who wanted desperately to DO something. To stop sitting around waiting to vote and start doing something proactive. Now. Today. To take a stand against great evil. To join our power together with others to become a force. A force that could make a real difference. Michael's Bind Trump movement has done that. It has created a safe place for those of us who not only 'want' to oppose this evil, but who have found that we MUST oppose it. It has created a place for us to join our power. It has created a place to become fearless. It has created a place for encouragement and for hope. It has created a place to learn and to teach. For we all must become productive members of the resistance very quickly as there is much work to do. This book has grown out of that resistance. Not only the resistance to Trump...but to ALL of the dark forces that currently imperil our country and our planet. It is a practical book, for we have no time for niceties. We must all get to work NOW....and this book gives us the tools we need to do that. If you are a witch (or even if you are not!) who is sitting out there, burning up inside with the urgency of this situation, knowing that you are called to do something NOW. Today. Not in November of 2020, but today...this book is your first stop. It will get you oriented into the resistance. It will give you the tools you need to get started. It will even tell you were to go to find the rest of us so that you can share knowledge and support with others. Remember, we need you - if you are reading this and nodding, we need you. You don't need to reinvent the wheel and go it alone. There is no time for that nonsense, and you know there's not. So just buy the book and save yourself a ton of time and energy that could be used toward actually making a difference, rather than searching and researching and spellcrafting all the other stuff that we witches love to do. This is too important and time is too short. Evil must be opposed.
My wife is a witch...
And this helped me understand what she's been doing. Some of her books are very flaky. This one is right on target. Interesting stories from the hippie days and other good times. We've fought this before, and we can do it again.
A Book To Bring Like-Minded People Together
If you are struggling with the current political climate and feel you are drowning in helplessness this book (and movement) is a port in the storm. It gives you tools for resistance in a way that also help you become self aware and part of the natural earth energy towards unity. While some may not believe in magic, there is magic in bringing people together for a common good. That's what this book/movement does.
The Best Magic Book I Ever Read
I bought this ebook right after listening to a podcast with Michael Hughes about the BindTrump Protests. It was a fascinating interview. I am thrilled with the way the book is organized and written. Lots of magical information presented in a modern relatable fashion along with wonderful personal stories from Michael Hughes about the BindTrump movement. I highly recommend purchasing this book and joining in to make the world a better place for everyone!

Found this group at its inception, so was happy to support the author and founder. Book is clearly laid out and easy to follow: it's nice to have back story and foundation material for what we've been doing since Mad King 45 has soiled the honorable office. But more importantly, connects us intent on stopping the terror that has overtaken American democracy and restraining all those willfully engaged in harming not just USA, but all the world. So Mote It Be!
Fantastic
This is a super helpful and crucial resource for modern witches who are also politically active. This is definitely a favorite that I will be using again and again. Recommended HIGHLY.
Great resource for beginners.
Michael M. Hughes covers the basics, plus some history, and offers practical advice for binding spells. I enjoyed this book and want to see it become part of the cannon. In this case cannonball to derail some really wicked people. But that's just me.
Great resource for magic activism
First Glance: In light of the social and political turmoil following George Floyd’s death, I mentioned to my wife that I had a list of witchy books related to activism and magic resistance. I had originally started a wishlist based on several Patheos posts. When she asked me why I hadn’t purchased any of them yet, I didn’t have a good reason. Half a dozen books were ordered immediately, and this was the first to arrive. Positive Bits: To start, I appreciate the author’s choice to include a large section on the history of magic and activism before touching the magic itself. I think context is key to understanding magical workings, and the added knowledge gives additional strength to your magic. It was also interesting to note that he was the creator of the “Bind Trump” ritual that went around in 2017 and hit the major news networks. I had no idea! The histories presented are done so in an entertaining and informative way, and I appreciate that sources are listed as footnotes. Some of the events are familiar, if only in a word-of-mouth kind of way; however, I like to look up details on events, particularly if they sound outlandish and have no specific sources. In the section that includes spells and rituals for your magical activism, the variety provided allows for a “different strokes, different folks” approach. In fact, more of the rituals lean toward what I would call generally pagan or Wiccan-flavored than I expected, considering the author’s description of his own spiritual path and history. However, I found the less delicate options (like the spells “Calling Bull” and “Hex the NRA”) fit the more offense-vs-defense attitude the book seems to suggest. There’s a good balance. I’ve personally set aside notes on a couple of projects for upcoming moon workings, so I definitely gained some ideas from this book that I didn’t have before. I’m glad this book was written to be so approachable, even from a non-witch perspective. Less Enjoyable Bits: No book is perfect. I’ll admit that part of my issues stem from differences in paths. The author made it clear that he’s not a witch or pagan, but rather a magician with a relaxed attitude toward methods of magic. In some cases, you can see the ceremonial magician leanings, particularly when he tells you to do a thing, but then tells you “it just works, not sure why”. When my previous training covered some basic ceremonial magic, we were told the same thing: if you follow the instructions, with or without belief, you will get the results. Actions matter more than intent. That never really worked for me, considering how often we’re told that intent matters more than tools, herbs, and stones – because we’re the source of magic, and they’re just a focus. Unfortunately, the author gets a little preachy in the middle as he discusses “Self-Care and Resilience” and “On the Casting of Circles”. I don’t mind someone suggesting a no-kill fast for magical purposes, but implying that your magic will be negatively impacted by eating animals is a step too far. (To be fair, he does say to “trust your intuition and what your body tells you”.) When we get to the section on casting circles, he dismisses the entire process without discussing the benefits of a circle; clearly, he has a hard preference for no circles in magic. He then immediately follows that dismissal with a watered-down ceremonial magic circle that takes up several pages of instruction, rather than anything familiar from witchcraft and circle casting methods in general. I feel as though the pages of complaint against circle casting are a product of the author’s experience in ceremonial magic and its structures. To each their own? Is it worth the coin? Yes – I think this is a good place to start, if you’re wanting to use your magic as part of our activism. The overall accessibility of the spells and rituals makes it ideal for a beginner in this kind of work.

Concise and Complete Guide to Practical Magic
The depth of research and knowledge that Mr. Hughes has poured into this book is amazing. The historical anecdotes are truly spot on and very entertaining. I had no idea people tried to levitate the pentagon in the 60s! A very entertaining read and a must have resource if you want to practice resistance magic.
A must have for all your Resistance spells!
Very well written and easy to follow for the beginning witch to the advanced.
A Useful Resource
A good resource for beginners or experienced practitioners alike. Ordered one for myself and one as a birthday gift for a like-minded friend.
A Meaningful Addition to Any Witchcraft Library
It’s one of the most fulfilling and worthwhile magical texts I’ve ever picked up. The chapter on the difference between offensive and defensive magic and the need for both is perfectly worded. I’ve adopted the language into my personal theory of ethical witchcraft. It’s a book I’ve consulted time and time again. Thanks for your amazing insights!
A great introduction to using your magick for the greater good!
This book is probably best for those who are more experienced in magick than activism and want to find ways to incorperate their practice into making changes for their society. For activists who are new to magick, i would reccomend this book and a few more to add context to the different practices. Explinations of the different techniques are clear and helpful. Overall a good read for a passionate magick practitioner.
Copy was Defective - (Love the book)
Since I bought a lot of books at once and only just picked this one up to read it, I did not realize that it was defective, and am not able to return it. This particular copy I got has blank pages in every chapter, so I am missing whole sections of chapters. I don't know where this error happened, but it must have been sold by a seller who had a defective copy. I will have to get another one at some point. Aside from that, I'm still reading it and it is exactly what I hoped it would be.
Well written, easy read
This is an easy read, but is full of history with footnotes. It is also uplifting, it encourages empowerment which is helpful in these trying times. It also has some basic info for those who are not very familiar with magic.
Highly recommended
I love this book and reference it often.
Easy to read, LOADS of information
I loved this book...so much information jam packed into a relatively short and easy read. I've picked up quite a few new practices from the book that I just LOVE and feel great about. Would highly recommend!
Simple & Easy to use
Bought this for my SIL who is an activist & she lives the book.

Voted by several book clubs as one of the best books on the market today.
Great book for the beginner and advanced one!
Connectedness
Once I found this book I didn’t feel so alone. I felt a connection to other like-minded folks. Really important in these times
He could have done better
I have this book on the shelf at our occult shop, and have read through it while at work. This is a book I'd never personally buy because the witchcraft resistance movement is very disheartening. Any way you look at it, they are playing judge, jury, and wanna be executioner. Very often the targets (such as the latest, Kavanaugh) have nothing more than an accusation against them: yet they rally their supporters and attempt to seek justice through magick. Very contemptous, sad, and irresponsible. This is so far from what liberal political leanings used to be about. I give it 2 stars instead of one because I have to be fair and rate it for a practitioner that is seeking this extremist agenda political "play magic". As pointed out by a different reviewer, this book tells it's readers that it's okay to simply use this book and walk through the workings that appeal to them, without the need for any kind of belief in whether magic can work or if it's real. Not only someone with a neutral opinion, but those people who think occultists are crazy. This is a book of magic that's written for a general leftist population, and not for real witches, (by that I mean a practitioner of witchcraft and it's associated magic). Being familiar with this author, he could have done much better then this.
Very Important Magical Book For Our Times
I'm so glad this book is out in the world. Many times, "white witches" and other people are afraid to use their magic to make changes in the world. This book goes into why this isn't the best solution and that there's actually a history about witches fighting against oppression. It has spells and rituals as well as a few personal stories. It's my go-to book whenever someone asks for a recommendation about activist magic. Highly recommended.
Why read a book from a failure at Magick?
The spell upon which this book is based, the spell to bind Trump, is an objective failure. It was Supposed to prevent him doing any harm, but he's pretty much done whatever he wanted during his first term. And even if he's impeached, it's still a failure; he's done harm in the eyes of those who have cast the spell. To write a book based on the strength of a failed spell is dishonest, and it's plain stupid. There may be useful info here, but it's evident that the author is a failure where it most counts. What good is a book on magick written by someone who can't cast a successful spell? What reason does anyone have to think his spells and ideas will actually work when the big one is a failure? On the contrary, his binding spell failing gives strong evidence that his other spells and ideas will likewise fail. He is a con artist, greedy and only competent at deception.
Extraordinary, inspiring, healing, and ultra-practical! A must-have!
It's rare to find a magical book that is well-written, but Hughes is a terrific and appealing writer and clearly a very experienced and observant practitioner. I highly recommend this for newbies and urge them to read the text thoroughly and prepare themselves with the exquisite centering and protection rituals. Longtime practitioners will find themselves delighted and revitalized with some very surprising rituals, some easily adaptable for more scenarios and for inclusion in daily life. And deep rage will find a constructive outlet too. Grateful for this book and its wise, kind and deeply aware author.
Highly recommended!
Very interesting on both political and magical side. A very good book, well written, and full of interesting spells. This review of this book would require a blog post as there're so many interesting things to discuss. Highly recommended! Many thanks to Llewellyn Worldwide and Netgalley for this ARC
Ideological Subversion - Saul Alinsky would be proud
This is a great example of ideological subversion or, at least, a victim of said subversion. It's not new nor is it unique however it seems such subversion has been in overdrive since the election of Trump and will likely continue into the near future but not much farther as people wake up to a deeper and more complex reality that exists beyond the hypernormalized reality bubble that so many are imprisoned within. Straight out of Saul Alinskys rules for Radicals, a satanic manifesto if there ever was one: #6 "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.". In this case the target is magic and the esoteric and it's been bandied about by pseudo-practitioners, poseurs and easily manipulated wannabe dilettantes who aren't paying as much attention as they believe. In the end these people, perhaps the author himself, will wake up to the fact that they have been duped by dark forces far more sinister than Donald Trump and his rather cartoonish public personae. But then it will be too late for the karma of these individuals who seek to do harm before pursuing deeper truth.
Different book of magic
MICHAEL M. HUGHES book is a well written, comprehensive book on using magic to fight against things and people he doesn't agree with. The dangers of doing this was not addressed and should have been. Putting a spell or binding on someone because you think it should be done, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Telling beginners that they don't have to believe in magic and can do the spells and rituals as a form of personal theater makes no sense. Beginners playing with something they know nothing about is a scary premise. To each his own, but this is something not to be taken lightly. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation. The opinions and views are my own
Deranged
Don't agree with the political party that was elected into office? No problem! Here's a step by step guide how to make up lies and hate and bind someone and all their supporters just because you disagree with them. Because we can justify any kind of violent or magical action as long as we say he's a racist and a rapist. And you don't need any proof at all! Just a hateful media base to slander and twist everything he does or says, so they really do all the work for you! And the magical resistant movement has worked out so well, that I'm sure ANY day now Trump is going to be impeached! Any....day...now....
#resist
Found this group at its inception, so was happy to support the author and founder. Book is clearly laid out and easy to follow: it's nice to have back story and foundation material for what we've been doing since Mad King 45 has soiled the honorable office. But more importantly, connects us intent on stopping the terror that has overtaken American democracy and restraining all those willfully engaged in harming not just USA, but all the world. So Mote It Be!
Fantastic
This is a super helpful and crucial resource for modern witches who are also politically active. This is definitely a favorite that I will be using again and again. Recommended HIGHLY.

A book that every activist should have on a bookshelf

It was released in 2018 and is focused on the election of Donald Trump. There is a description of the monthly public ritual focused on binding Trump from hurting anyone but himself. Towards the end of the book, there are other spells (Black Lives Matter, Spirits of Polling Place, Invocation for Reproductive Rights, LGBTQ+ Protection, No Borders, NRA, Candidate Boosting and a few others). These are the chapters in the book. Chapter 1: Welcome to the Magic Resistance Chapter 2: Witches and Occultists vs. Kings and Nazis Chapter 3: Binding Trump Chapter 4: Toolkit for Magical Activism Chapter 5: Offensive and Defensive Magic Chapter 6: Magic Beyond the Altar Chapter 7: Finding the Others: Coven and Community Chapter 8: Self-Care and Resilience Chapter 9: Preparation for Ritual Chapter 10: The Magical Activist’s Spellbook The information in the book is well researched and resources provided. This is a book that every activist should have on a bookshelf.
Join the Magical Resistance
Magic for the Resistance is solidly grounded in the author’s decades of magical study and practice. It is thorough, well-written, and will give you all the knowledge and tools you need to become an effective magical activist. But Hughes didn’t stop with the book. He's become a leader in the magical Resistance because he practices what he preaches. Through the Facebook group he founded and other online outlets, he encourages, informs and inspires us to do this ongoing work every single month. Start by reading this book, then join the magical Resistance to help shape a better world.
Woke Capitalism at it's Finest.
YET ANOTHER WHITE SAVIOR looking to make money off activism. Four years and it's amounts nothing, but he sure does love to separate you from your money and tell everyone how cool of an Activist he is. It's a book for white people by white people, so they can do literally nothing and call it activism and avoid any real functional work. The Author's a terrible person with a terrible reputation and Lewellyn would be wise to cut ties and to stop publishing this blatantly opportunistic dreg.
Pointlessly frenetic, disjointed, and boring.
No thanks. I found it pointlessly frenetic, disjointed, and boring. Poor editing and visual overload - quickly became boring.
Excellent book for the Resistance
I found this book after reading about and eventually joining the Magical Resistance in the US against the current regime. I have been studying magic for several years now and I found Michael's book to be highly informative and engaging. He is an excellent writer and I love his explanations. This book gave me hope and working with my fellow Resisters has changed the way that I view our current political climate. It seems as if some of the people who gave "reviews" may not have read the book at all. A binding spell is not an attack. If you are interested in this book please read it, don't let anyone else make that decision for you.
yikes
This is not what magic is about, I saw this at my local occult shop and it is SO sad. I have been practicing witchcraft for 7 years, this is really irresponsible. I simply agree with the other negative reviews, shame on the author.
Full of wonderful rituals for the resistance!
In these times we must use all manner of tools available. Michael Hughes offers us wonderful insight of how magic has been used in the past, as well as a wide variety of magical rituals and spells that can be used during these times of resistance and power.
Read, Resist, Empower!
I bought this book after a lecture Michael gave in Salem MA. I found his delivery in person was relatable, informative, and organized. The book is a reflection of that. Whether one is versed in the magickal arts or not, this book flows with tools to empower in a political climate that may leave one feeling helpless.
Thought provoking
I purchased in a local shop & have loved how thought provoking this book was. You wont be disappointed
Magic for the Resistance- author is a faux activist
After reading this book, viewing author's presentations, exploring his FB group, it is apparent that the author is a huckster much like the man behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz. Inauthentic and poorly researched. All about theatrics. Disappointing.

Simply brilliant
'Magic for the Resistance' is a fascinating book exploring the practical application of the magical arts to promote positive social change, both historically and in the present day. If you are interested in practicing magic, buy this book. If you are interested in magical political activism, buy this book. If you are interested in a no-nonsense, common sense approach to spell-working, buy this book. If you are just curious about what on earth we can do on a practical level to sort out the current craziness in the world, buy this book. If nothing else, you'll enjoy a brilliant read crafted by a damn fine writer.
Disappointed
I was hoping the spells to action were more objective and done without malice and bias. I was wrong. There is no way I can scream obscenities and let anger in my circle. It sullies the magick.
Great book for magical rituals
Great. Easy to understand
#resist
