Awesome book - helped me land my new job!

This pocket guide helped me get a job! Really! I needed a book to review Linux commands, so I purchased this to read on the plane. Sure, I've been a Unix / Linux Engineer for 20 years and have done coding, but wanted a quick refresh of commands. While flying to the job interview, I quickly read through this guide. (Well, I made it halfway through in 4 hours). The only 2 Linux questions asked on my interview were things I had forgotten over the years but quickly remembered when reading this book - how to use "chattr" and the obscure run-levels. Great book to have for a quick review! More easily read than man pages, just as in-depth, and commands are grouped in a logical manner.

Very handy, comprehensive Linux cheat sheet.

I work in IT primarily with Microsoft systems. However, in todays interconnected computer infrastructure Linux is a reality and sometimes I find myself confronted with a Linux command line. This book is such a help, with remembering the proper syntax or command that is needed. It is just the right size so it really does fit in your pocket, because in a world where computers are everywhere, sometimes it isn't easy, possible, or even practical to 'look the answer up online.' If you like me sometimes need an accurate, concise, and relatively comprehensive Linux reference, this is a lifesaver.

Good Book Good Shipping

This is a great supplement to my learning Linux. I have a solid understanding of much of Linux, but this helps me to remember some of the little details such as command calls. Nice quick reference though. The shipping was great and the book arrived in perfect condition.

Good stuff. Technical but accessible. If your curious about linux CL a must

Clear, concise and straightforward about what you get and what you don’t. What you get is a great reference thst is indispensable if you ever command line around, which you should because it’s clearly more fun then the GUI at the end of the day. I never thought I’d say that but it’s true -- learning the back end has been a rewarding experience. For a guy who in 1984 got the first Mac when I was 12 years old. I’m still obsessed with the idea of Mac paint and how revolutionary it seemed. Now to know what actually happens -- now so many years later - under the hood in even a tiny way, is kind of crazy, and can’t argue . This book is a great pocket guide, with the essential commands, to get you from a to b (or PWD to CD) without knocking out some Sudo function you shouldn’t have messed with anyway.

Very useful for those switching from Windows to Linux

A great "quick reference" for many essential Linux commands, including common tools and utilities. I am slowly but surely switching over from Windows to Linux, and this is a handy guide that I keep right next to the computer. This guide doesn't tell you everything (which would require a set of encyclopedias!), but it is organized and indexed well enough to steer you in the right direction. If you need full information about a command, you can always reference the "man pages" on the computer, but they often provide too much information to browse through quickly - hence this guide.

It IS exactly what it says. A GUIDE to Essential Commands

If you're looking for a Linux "how to" book, this isn't it. What this IS though is a good "must have" book in my opinion for anyone using ANY Linux distro. It WILL help you to navigate through those "how to" lessons or videos and give you a road map of sorts of how to perform many command line processes that are necessary in the Linux environment. Linux IS NOT like Windows. Windows is a pretty strictly GUI (General User Interface) or better known as pictures and recognized sources. Linux did try to become more user-friendly with the Ubuntu distro but didn't quite achieve what it was intended to do. One of the benefits of Linux are there are so many flavors and distros that you're bound to find something that makes it a little more palatable for you. For anyone switching over from Windows it's a big learning curve and it's going to take you a while. I recommend a dedicated machine for Linux or Virtual Box which is free for Windows users. Operating in Virtual Box insures there's no cross contaminating with your Windows OS as often happens if you try the alleged "dual-boot" method. This book will help you to become much more familiar with some of the needed command lines you will use to achieve things similar to what you are used to doing in Windows. At the same time there is a much higher level of control over your Distro/OS in that YOU get to decide what and how you update. There are also many more features in Linux but you need to know how to get to them and what commands to use to download and install them, that's where this book will be a good guide for you. Making folders, specifying or creating directories and undoing changes are all command line processes so that's where this book will come in handy for you. Over time you will begin to have instinctive reaction of how to achieve certain things the same way or better than you currently do in Windows now. Linux is not a replacement for Windows but an enhanced way of doing similar things and more than you can do with Windows. Instead of having to constantly refer to websites for explanations this book will guide you through some of the how's and why's and what to use when.

Good introduction

Just what you need to get started with Linux. Seems reasonably up to date. It does assume that you know your way around your computer and have been exposed to Unix or Linux. Well organized with commands grouped by topic, eg file access, string editing, etc. This makes it a good reference for novices. Standard references are usually organized alphabetically, which is great if you know what you are looking for. Linux commands are often named cryptically, eg awk or tar. Recommend for novices and people trying to refresh their skills after a hiatus, like me.

Invaluable pocket-sized Linux command line reference.

Several times a year, I have to work on Linux systems. This pocket-sized reference is a treasure as I struggle to recall obscure operators. It has a permanent place in my field kit. Jerry

A real must have.

I had the first edition and almost wore it out. 3rd is much more up-to-date. This is the book I grab first to find a quick answer or refresh a brain cell. Always recommend it to friends. Where's my commission check?

Noob to Linux user

This book won't teach you everything, I think it just scratches the surface of what linux can do. But if you just need a quick cheat sheet or want to use linux more, buy it.

Not quite as deep as I'd like.

It's OK, but I thought it would have a few more commands. Some of my favorites are missing completely or missing a fair bit of what I would consider useful information. I know this is a "pocket guide" but I think with an 10 pages this could have been bumped up 1 or 2 stars. As it is I'll need to write my own notes to stick in the back.

The, Linux Pocket Guide

Hey sports fans. Simply put, a perfect reference for the command line on your Linux PC. Really, an information overload, as there are too many things to remember. So having the pocket guide is a very big help. Very much recommended for the Linux enthusiast. Have a very nice day.

Great for beginners

I recently took a job as a Linux Admin that is a training opportunity to move up. This book is fabulous for a quick go to when needed. Google is still my first choice, but sometimes, you need the book. Really helpful and well written.

Very Convenient

This is a handy tool for Linux users that go beyond the GUI. Has a lot of useful terminal commands that are common across most all Linux distros. Small and pocket-sized.

Recommend doing online courses instead

Its a good book, but its old school. You'll learn much faster by taking online courses and tutorials. You can learn everything in the book online.

Excellent Book!

Handy book I love it if I need a quick reference guide. The only thing I had an issue with was downloading the test files the books provides. Kali wouldn't open the files. So maybe that was on my end. But all in all it's a great book!!!

A lot of info in a small book

Only use it a little so far book contains a lot of useful commands and has pretty good layout to find what you are looking for.

My OPINION is it could be better.

Could offer more basic commands. And I personally would like to see a description of each command.

Good book

Needed a book to help with quick reference working with linux and this works perfectly.

A Great Companion to Linux in a Nutshell

I bought this to go along with a lost copy of Linux in a Nutshell. Hard to do without.

great book with good explanation

I disliked that I had to search for the practicing files of this book. the url didn't work lucky me I know my way how to search and found the files on the web. I used to study network administration and felt like I wanted to learn better and more commands of Linux. the book does give you the information and learns you the essential commands of linux

Good quick reference

I am satisfied with this book. I don't always have to jump on my laptop to find a command.

Cool!

Useful if you only use linux every now and then. I'm always forgetting commands, so this had been a great help.

It's a great book.

Great reference. Everything one will require is in here.

Love this tiny Linux gem.

Great book to carry around. It has a lot of useful information even for its size. Recommend it.

For those moments you just can't remember the options.

You'll constantly be referring back to this book for guidance! Great help learning and for re-enforcing learning. Easy to use and search for what you're looking for.

I like how this pocket book has enough information for beginners.

Linux Pocket Guide

Very useful to have, especially when one gets older and forget things.

Good book

Helped me a lot.

It's very useful.

This is a great book and reference guide. I started studying for RHCSA exam and I also do "wargames" challenges online to practice my Bash skills, and I have to say that this book has been great and very helpful. It's fairly small so you can carry it but right now it sits right next to me and I use it every time when I use Linux. Although you can probably find all information online or by simply using command, I still find this book to be worth buying. I already learned a lot from it. I have a feeling that this guide is going to get pretty worn out, but that's okay, looking forward to buying a new copy when new edition comes out. Get it if you need a good reference for command line.

Excellent pocket Guide!

Four Stars

Great pocket reference

Does what it promises

You should not expect to learn Linux in depth with this one, as the author states "you will only scratch the surface". But a more advanced user, who just needs to gain some quick knowledge to do some real work in a Linux distribution, will be happy with the book.

I keep this close to my keyboard as I find it more convenient than man pages.

By far the best Linux book out there

These books are simply the best. So much information easily delivered in a brief explaination. Most linux books take 3 to four pages to cover what this does in half a page- and equally as informative. I highly recommend to anyone learning linux, or the sys admin wanting to learn some new tricks.

A required book in your library

Just one of those books that you cannot have a linux system without having this book. One of the first ones that I purchased, and then I bought the hard copy. It has helped me a great deal in getting started in using Linux.

Could easily be a 1 semester college course

Linux today is ubiquitous in the IT domain. Not necessarily on personal desktop computers (though that is beginning to change due to its very "low-priced" entry cost (save for your time), but certainly on the server side and in portable appliances of all types, and it will only continue to grow at a rapid rate. Every IT professional developer, admin, architect needs to know it - particularly at the command line where the true power of this O/S shines through. This book is all about the command line, not about GUI's and single clicking. It could be easily a 1 semester course for a Linux intro, if it's not already, but the book is only $25 and that's a better deal than 12 weeks in front of an instructor. The book concentrates on the command line with a nice section on shell programming near the end. It also is Linux distro agnostic, so no matter what your flavor of this operating system is - Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Red Hat, Fedora and all the rest, this book will serve you well. It got me up to speed in a few weeks, much faster that the documentation that came with my distro did, enough so I was confident working in the terminal window in short order. Other topics which are more advanced (i.e. Networking, Installation, Desktops) are mentioned in brief and where necessary, are referred to more advanced tomes including the Linux/Unix Man Pages and supporting documentation. The book fits in your back pocket, and if you don't have wifi in your favorite pub, this book will take care of you. Most established Linux pros will likely have read it a long time ago, but it's very suitable for any newbie who likes the textbook method of learning. O'Reilly could have called it "A Linux Guru in Your Pocket". And if you are thinking of looking in other directions besides the one that Microsoft has convinced you to look at, this book is a great start on your new journey.

Kindle version is broken

The kindle version I received paged from an early section on command line syntax to somewhere in the index towards the end of the e-book. Paging backwards toward the errant section generated an error, with an advisory to delete and re-download the e-book. Did, same result. Re-booted kindle, same result. I returned the book and ordered the paperback. I can't review the content until I receive the paperback. I have years of sysadmin experience with AIX and Linux before retiring, but now need a refresher and "cheat sheet" on Linux to deal with replacing Windows on my home machines.

Learn something new everytime you use it.

Simple as it gets. Covers alot of ground for a pocket size book.

More than a pocket guide.

There is a lot more info in this little book than I expected. Good value!

Highly recommended

I didn't buy it from Amazon but I definitely wanted to review it. This a really well composed book for quick references. Highly recommended.

Using it a hundred times a week! Thanks for writing it

Down in the fine print of the description for this book you'll find

Down in the fine print of the description for this book you'll find: Product Dimensions: 4.3 x 0.5 x 6.9 inches I'm not qualified to judge the quality of the content yet. But in my opinion the size of the print is way too small ! It's tough enough to read a technical subject but to have to strain to do so is such a source of irritation. You've been warned.

Three Stars

a nice book

It is indeed "Essential"

You can think of this book as brief "man" pages for core Linux commands. In many cases, it's a little more understandable than the man pages for the same command. That being said, not all options for all commands are listed. What you'll find here are not only the most likely commands you'll use (outside of specific, specialized areas), but also the most likely switches and options on each of those. Keep in mind that some commands can have dozens or even over a hundred options and switches, most of which the majority of us will never use. This is a great book to have handy as even experienced Linux admins can't remember every last command and option. It's great to have a small, portable, quick reference guide when you're on the spot.

Need a good reference for Linux?

This is a very good book. So far every thing that I have tried has worked. Which, is unusual for most books recently. I definitely recommend it

Handy

I really needed this, it's going to come in handy

Five Stars

Great summary of linux.

Great read

amazing product!!!

Invaluable as a quick reference tool

I started a new Linux systems support role with only minimal prior experience - this pocket guide has been invaluable as a quick reference guide for both basic commands and the more arcane ones. It's not perfect, but 9 /10 times the command I want clarification on is in there with a good explanation.

Bought in Used Condition and pleased

Book was bought cheaper due to being Used Condition. The book looked and felt new when package opened, yes there were minor marks but certainly nothing which prevented me enjoying the book, in fact I've had far worse from high street book shops when they've sold as new. I feel the book could do with another release just to keep pace with Linux developments but overall happy with content.

like say email

There are omissions of basic setup routines for different functionality, like say email, you need to set up your email details before you can use command line email, but it doesn't go through any of that. It's really just a quick reference book.

Very nice, easy to read and practical

Is not super-extensive but is practical and very useful. It explains nice tricks.

Great reference guide

Great little book to keep handy while coding.

An essential purchase for all Linux users

The Linux pocket guide is an essential quick reference guide to Linux. It's a quick and simple way of working out the syntax to commands and deals with a lot of common Linux tasks. I was recommended this book by a Linux system admin who always carries a copy of the book for that moment when you need to get an answer quickly.

Great if you use the command line

I love the Linux pockst guides (I have all three editions). Although do note this edition only includes command line software.

Excellent LITTLE book

This pocket book is superbly written, but not so well published. Sadly I found the print a little too small and not a very crisp print. Purely a personal problem, but nevertheless thanks to Mr Barrett.

Excellent pocket guide to Linux

Excellent pocket guide to Linux. Does the job.

Excellent, concise reference

I always keep these little books handy. Excellent, concise reference.

Awsome Quick Reference Guide

This is great for when you need a quick look up of common commands

Must item

Literally amazing book.

Great book, thoroughly recommend

Useful

Did I really need a pocket guide, given that I have the Internet and 800-page books on Linux? Surely that covers everything? Yes, but I didn't have a pocket guide. I just had to have it because it was available. That said, I continue to find it useful. It's more up-to-date than my books, and it's sometimes faster than sifting through the forums. The author has packed a lot of useful info into this little book, which is very well organized and clearly written. To me, as someone who's still learning Linux, it was a worthwhile investment.

Very handy and well written guide

This is my second pocket reference book from the same publisher, the booklet is a very handy reference to keep at your side, I administer Linux machines from time to time and need to refresh my memory, and this books is far faster than googling or searching online, especially when you are rolling up a site and have low coverage, plus it fits well in a pocket/case. The quality of the content is just fine and the book is very well written and organized (3rd edition)

Good Linux pocket reference

At first I was a little disappointed. For the price and the reputation of this book, I expected more helpful command examples and variations then are given - but then again, it is a "pocket" reference. The print is a bit small, but well done and readable, and on decent paper. The commands are mostly in alphabetical order and indexed. The more I thumbed through this book, the more I liked it. Overall a good pocket reference book. Arrived in brand new condition.

Great book. But overpriced.

Like the rest of Linux books, this thing costs double of what it should. Its 20€ for tiny book that could fit into your pocket. The book is ok, the price is not. Same happens with Linux for Dummies, and the other books about Linux. I've made the math, and to buy 4 or 5 books to get my from newbie to intemediate user in Linux is going to cost more than 150€. Thats the price of buying a full Windows License. It's a pitty that a this may put off some people willing to start into linux but the cost of a 'free' platform comes with such a cost in learning books. With this prices, they are only enforcing people not buying the books, and just downloading them. And I say it sincerelly.

Davvero ottimo

Would have saved me a lot of fime

If I had bought this book sooner, it would have saved me a lot of time. But I didn't and learnt to use the command line by reading about it on the internet. And yet, experienced as I am right now, this book still offers insight. So if you are someone who is interested in using the command line more often, then this book is certainly one to read.

I think it was worth buying

Yes this redundant, having full size books about linux. I've debated buying this since about 2001 when I first started using linux. But stuck in the hospital, I decided I wanted it. It has the importsnt things, and maybe I'll do things better having this in an easy format. It is now a fairly recent edition, so anything new is herit diesn't cover gui programs or programming languages.

this book is not showing me how to install debian.

this book is not showing me how to install debian. you know that debian would get alot more users if it was easier to install people. just give me an install disk wiht an point and click install

Siempre a mano

Good reference book to keep aside.

This book gives you a good reference of common linux commands and it size is very handy to keep it close to your linux machine. When your not an expert but do have some experience with OS command line will be glad to have this as a reference at hand.

Buon manuale

Great for beginners

Buy it in offer

Good book but price could have been less

Otherwise good explanation of the commands

commands are not in an intuitive order and the index must be used each time to find the right page. Otherwise good explanation of the commands.
