5 Reasons why Likable is worth your Money and Time
Likable is worth the time and money. 1. It’s packed with rich real-world examples and business cases. Not the esoteric ones, but ones everyone can relate to with ease. I think it is extremely important to retain best practices that are taught in the 3rd edition. 2. The refresher in the back of the book. What value. Even if you are using Social daily, I still think it’s worth reading. Personally, it gave me a level set and I was pumped for the next chapters. 3. Most books tell you what to do, but Dave is much more “human” he reminds us to be empathetic, authentic and honest. Yes, there’s more to social, but those are pillars to get your voice out there. 4. After each chapter, Dave calls out 3-4 action items. For me, I can re-use these questions and repurpose to help me solve my needs. 5. Very end of the chapter, there’s a nugget of wisdom, page 181, “what’s your story!” Is the my favorite. Lastly, as I was reading the book, I grew to trust Dave philosophy and his methodology. (And I am typically a skeptic.) Thanks Dave for being a genuine and helping others fine their authentic voice. Now I want to inspire customers to share their stories!

Practical social media guide
Excellent, practical guide. I used this as a textbook in my MBA class.
This is all about content and strategy. A fantastic resource!
So many books and blogs focus on the how of posting on social media, on the mechanics of managing social media, and on tutorials. But they miss the point by skipping the strong focus on the "why." I love that this book started with the emphasis on the fact that social media is a conversation where we need to listen just as much as we speak. Yes! Too many people post without commenting, interacting and really getting to know something about their followers. I also love that it focus on the target audience, another area where some posters are weak. It also focuses on how the audiences are different on various platforms. There is a helpful chapter on thinking like your audience thinks. I appreciate that this book focuses on advertising on social platforms. This is an important part of reaching the audience for me as a business owner and author. There is just so much practical info. I will definitely be referring to it often. It's great to have so many ideas for how to grab the attention of an audience and deliver value driven content. Too many people spend too much time learning the platforms without paying attention to what they post on them. This is all about content: why you do it, who you reach, what to do, when to do it...A fantastic resource!
Redundant
This book has good, mostly common sense advice regarding social media. It helped me to better understand how Facebook is treating pages & the necessity to boost posts in order for them to be seen. At first I enjoyed a lot of the examples in the book of how social media either positively or negatively has effected businesses based different businesses methods. By a little more than half way through the book I was getting pretty sick of reading it. It just felt redundant & I really got tired of all of the Likeable plugs. The book really is one giant plug for the authors business. However, I did put a few things to use that are recommended. Only one action so far has shown positive results. All others have backfired. I am grateful for the wake up call as to what folks want from pages they like. Folks like pages to get to know a business sure, but apparently on top of everything else I have to do, I'm also expected to entertain. That's fine. I do enjoy sharing funny, educational, & uplifting posts on my business page, but I'm one person running an organic farm full time. I simply cannot keep up with it all & I do not have the means to hire someone to run my Facebook page. So there is another thing I didn't care for in this book, while the author states many times it doesn't matter what size your business is, it does. Many recommendations & examples work for large businesses, not for the micro business. There are good tips in the book. It's worth checking out at the library. Take notes on what pertains to you & see if it helps. For me, I'm not all that impressed.
Social media is business
"Likeable Social Media, Third Edition: How To Delight Your Customers, Create an Irresistible Brand, & Be Generally Amazing On All Social Networks That Matter" by Dave Kerpen really brings it home that social media is a business, both personally and professionally. The book concentrates mostly on the professional aspect, that is, how to work social media to the business's advantage. It has a good play on the word 'likes' but it also goes beyond that. It has good advice on practices regarding customer interaction and updates. It spends time on visual imagery as well as context. It isn't a book with a lot of images but the images that are contained are well used. It can get a little too 'likeable' at times, but overall, it has good advice on how to work social media.
A good summary of social media for businesses
If you have a business, then you must have some kind of online presence. Dave Kerpen does a pretty good job of outlining what you should be doing as a business. However, it’s all a bit overwhelming. Most large businesses have some young social media savvy people who run their online programs for them. However, for the single, one-man-band, there is no way you could keep up with all that you need (or that he recommends) to do. My favorite chapter was actually in the Appendix, A Refresher Guide to the Social Networks That Matter Most. This was a very helpful summary. What I would REALLY like to see is a one-page plan: If you have three hours a week, this is what you should be doing. If you have five hours a week, this is what you should be doing. Just outline it for me. I have a website, a blog, several Facebook pages, two online stores and it’s just overwhelming. Even a blog post consumes a couple of hours (with photo editing). I do not have time cover everything. But….this is a good place to start.

As smart as it is actionable
Filled with expert advice about building audience engagement, standing out, and creating a popular brand, this third edition of Dave Kerpen’s Likeable Social Media is a must-read. As smart as it is actionable, this insightful book will help you to attract and retain loyal customers, and much more. The third edition includes new case studies, advice about the latest social media platforms, and a wealth of best practices. I recommend it!
Likeable and practical
Lots of social media advice is either so general it's not usable or so detailed on particular tools or techniques it becomes outdated when the tools change. Dave Kerpen's team's book starts with general principles, but shows how to apply them practically. While they specify how to use a given tool -- Twitter, Facebook, etc -- they keep out of the weeds so when the tools change, the advice still applies. Beyond applying to social media, their advice applies to life. Most of the advice will make you more likeable in life.
Interesting Insight
Like many others I use social media a lot and for many different things. Mostly I use Facebook, but I have started using others more frequently. It's hard to keep up with it all, or even understand how to use it effectively. Much of the stuff in this book is basic, and yet my use of social media tells me there are a lot of business owners out there who need to learn the basics. Some of the information is rather insightful for explaining how to capitalize on what you already know. It would be interesting to see a companion volume or a few chapters in the next edition dealing with churches and non-profits specifically.
How to be more than just a social media page
What makes social media presence more than just a picture and a phone number and website ULR? Dave Kerpen gives ideas so your page comes across as a "real person" who is honest and authentic and flat and 2-D. 1. Listen First, and Never Stop Listening 2. Way Beyond "Women 25-54": Define Your Target Audience Better Than Ever 3. Think -- and Act -- Like Your Customer 4. Invite Your Customers to Be Your First Fans 5. Engage: Create True Dialogue with, and Between, Your Customers These points will help you develop web presence that engages your customers. We added a social media director to our music club and the interactions and attendance at concerts has measurably increased. The social media director schedules regular content and engages with questions, new videos and all kinds of news to keep people active and involved. It added a lot to our endeavors. Recommended reading.
Great advice and very practical
I run a travel agency business and thought this would be a good resource for me to really start getting some traction via social media. It's got some great ideas. I like how most of what's in here is practical and things you can start doing immediately. There are a few things, however, that either don't make sense or aren't really for smaller businesses. It's very well written, great advice, easy to read. I started using a few of the tips and strategies about 3 weeks ago and have already drummed up some new business through social media platforms. Overall, it's helped me see how I can use social media to get more business!
Rich Content For those Unfamiliar with the Social Game
This book is a solid piece of work. It provides a great lay-of-the-social landscape. It has been eye-opening and so helpful for one who has little knowledge of social media and how to use it for business. The chapters are well laid out and organized, capturing in-depth information on most of the leading platforms for today. Who doesn't want to delight their customers, with ease! Anyone with limited knowledge of social or how to maximize it for business will be better equipped to dive in to use and create a viable social media presence that works for their business.
Solid, if Basic Primer
Likeable Social Media by Dave Kerpen provides a good surface treatment on how one can use various social media platforms to create an awesome brand, engage current and potential customers, and have a meaningful social media presence. All the major social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest are all covered in some capacity. Thus it ends up a reasonable primer on the basics of the major social media networks. The problem is that if you’re a person who spends a lot of time on these social media channels there’s not much in the pages that would be new. If you play around on any of these platforms, a lot of this is intuitive. We’ve seen what happens to brands that are not responsible to their consumers on social media and how customers can use social media to reach out to companies in ways not seen previously. I guess it’s fine as a general reference, but if you need something for a specific social network seek out a book that covers that specifically.
In its third edition for a reason!
And that would be because the tips and ideas presented here WORK and are a sure-fire way to build a following, connecting with them, engage them, care ABOUT them and receive support FROM them. Social media changes from week to week it seems, but the most important principles of engagement do not, they only adapt and improve. Here you can read this book and move right along with the current and stay at your media best!
Excellent Primer
Reviewed by my wife: As someone who has run a business with primarily word-of-mouth and social media marketing, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the subject of this book. I was surprised and delighted at how much I had to learn, after perusing it - as me knowing more than I do = my business performing better + my customers feeling more satisfied + me spending less time and money on less-effective efforts. Win/win/win. This book is chock-full of case studies and specific action items, deconstructed and bulleted to make it easy for a busy entrepreneur or marketer to refer back to for the key points. Well-organized, friendly and engaging, it is a "likeable" book that gives me more confidence in my ability to meet the needs and interests of my marketplace. Highly recommended.
Proven source, actionable steps, awesome book
Whether you’re in business, or are employed and your career is your business, you know that social media is now fundamental to thrive, even to survive. The downside is everyone now thinks they now all they need to know about social media, and every Joe with a laptop and a blog says he’s an expert. Yet when it’s this important, like my business on the line important, I prefer to go to the tried and true source, the one with the proven clients and real revenue under his belt over the years. This book gets to the heart of it, actionable steps, no waste of time, truly love it and highly recommend it.
Definitive guide to social media success
In 2011, this bestselling classic covered uncharted territory. Now, the definitive guide to social media success has been updated for our modern, rapidly changing social media landscape. The principles Dave lays out in this book are timeless and simple, but still so often forgotten or ignored by brands and business leaders today. This book is for anyone wanting to understand the latest tools, trends, and best practices—and for anyone who needs a refresher about the true key to success on social media: just be likeable.
Good For the Beginner
This is a well-written, enjoyable book, probably best suited to the beginner who wants to use social media to advertise and grow their business. I've been using social media for years and for me, it was all common sense, and nothing particularly new. Still, it is organized in a logical fashion and includes lots of real life examples from real companies to illustrate each point. It's worth reading if you're daunted by social media and are unsure of how best to proceed.
State of the art (of people) advice
Everyone's on social media (or so it seems) but few have mastered the goal-oriented, mission-aligned use of it to get things done and truly represent companies to the world. Follow Kerpen's advice to get the work done right!
Keeping Up with Social Media
It's one thing to know what to do and how to be with social media, it's another thing to keep up with the never ending changes. From the first edition to this edition, Dave does a great job in this book of updating his content to be relevant to the current world of social media.
Learn from an early adopter who continues to lead the way
In full disclosure I'm mentioned in the book and walked alongside Dave in the early days of social media. The ground-breaking principles in this book still ring true today and this third edition is sure to inspire and equip all who read it. In it you'll find great examples and the mindset required to reach and captivate customers online.
Amazing!
Dave continues to be a master! Likeable Social Media leaves us not only with invaluable advice about how to stay likeable in the online world, but also in life. His lessons are priceless for anyone wanting to be successful in any line of business. It's a must read!
