B.K.S. Iyengar--hailed as "the Michelangelo of yoga" (BBC) and considered by many to be one of the most important yoga masters--has spent much of his life introducing the modern world to the ancient practice of yoga. Yoga's popularity is soaring, but its widespread acceptance as an exercise for physical fitness and the recognition of its health benefits have not been matched by an understanding of the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development that the yogic tradition can also offer. In Light on Life, B.K.S. Iyengar brings readers this new and more complete understanding of the yogic journey.

Here Iyengar explores the yogic goal to integrate the different parts of the self (body, emotions, mind, and soul), the role that the yoga postures and breathing techniques play in our search for wholeness, the external and internal obstacles that keep us from progressing along the path, and how yoga can transform our lives and help us to live in harmony with the world around us. For the first time, Iyengar uses stories from his own life, humor, and examples from modern culture to illustrate the profound gifts that yoga offers. Written with the depth of this sage's great wisdom, Light on Life is the culmination of a master's spiritual genius, a treasured companion to his seminal Light on Yoga.

Beautiful and inspiring

"This is not yoga by the body for the body, but yoga by the body for the mind, for the intelligence." I loved this book. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I bought it; I only knew that I am a yoga (asana) addict and Iyengar is sort of the father of western yoga, so I thought perhaps I would read the book about his philosophy. I am so glad I did. I can't say things better than Iyengar himself, so here are some quotes. Overall, if you're on the fence about whether to get this book, I would say get it and you probably will be glad you did. "We must discover what each sheath of being longs for and nourish it according to its subtle appetites." Ego is the "small, selfish creature you normally take yourself for." Pratyahara, the inward turning of the senses, "makes the mind shut up so we can concentrate." "Consciousness can be compared to a lens. Its inner surface faces the soul itself, and its outer surface comes into contact with the world. Inevitably a degree of grime attaches itself to that outer surface and obscures our vision." "When awareness is linked to intelligence, we are able to see with absolute honesty." "When you start yoga, you are probably living in your mind and emotions, a never-ending Internet chat room. You read books and articles on what best to eat and how to exercise, reading material that any wild animal would scorn. But you do not know how to live, only what you desire. Instinct is dulled." "Yoga insists on examining, scientifically and without value judgment, what can go wrong and why, and how to stop it. It is organic farming of the self--for the self." "Those who are on the verge of enlightenment will be tempted from the path even by angels." Meditation is "bringing the turbulent sea to a state of flat calm.... When you ruffle the waters, you create. You create everything in the manifest world, from nuclear war to Mozart's symphonies. The yogi is journeying in the opposite direction, from the world of things and events, which are so joyful, painful, baffling, and unending, back to the point of stillness before the waves were ruffled." "Before we can understand the Universal Soul, we must understand our own, and before we understand our soul, we must explore all that eclipses our true selves, especially the wily 'I' that takes on a thousand disguises to distract us." "We want to be immortal. We know in our hearts that we are. But we throw it all away by misidentifying with all that is perishable and transient." "Freedom is about dropping the shackles of fear and desire." "What we call consumer choice is not a choice but a selection. It offers only an illusion of freedom. The choice to consume has already been made." "An opinion is yesterday's right or wrong knowledge warmed up and re-served for today's situation." “The mind is a bottomless pit, like a black hole. Stop trying to fill it as it cannot be filled. Go beyond the bottomless pit to realize the soul.” "To take joy in the well-being of others is to share in the riches of the world."

One of the best books I ever read!

This book was nothing short of amazing. I was in awe by the way this man lived and his ethics. Such a humble and compassionate individual. He started his book by saying he hopes that his end can be the reader/seekers beginning. But I would be utterly grateful to become a portion of what he was. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what is true yoga. I pay obeisance to the author.

Unbearable

I don’t leave books unfinished often but this book didn’t feel right. I read 47 pages of the same thing over and over said different. In asana you should feel this and this and this.... Should and shouldn’t are not the way I like to look at yoga. I wanted to finish it out of respect for the guru but I had to respect myself and how utterly bored I was of the same thing repeated time and again.

Inspiring and Highly Readable

This is an important and accessible book on the life and philosophy and yoga practice of Mr. Iyengar. Highly readable and inspiring. He is a proponent of yoga for everyone no matter your age. I practice the method he developed with Iyengar certified yoga instructors and truly believe it is the best and safest form of yoga. Reading this book by the master himself has deepened my practice and inspired me in many non yoga areas of my life as well.

Iyengar knows

What's not to love about Iyengar's view on life? Enjoyable read, lots of quotable quotes. Practical advice for many parts of life.

A serious book

This book is by far one of the best on Yoga. It's a bit long on certain subjects, but tons of information. I read it every other day other wise there is just too much info for me. The section on breathing ( pranayama ) is worth the price of this book. Want to move up to the next level in yoga? Buy this book.

Inspiring presentationN of yoga tenets

Whether or not you are a student of yoga, this lovely book has nuggets of wisdom from the thousands-years-old Yoga teachings assembled by Patanjali. Still relevant today for the sensible advice it offers anyone desiring a better relationship with themselves and others.

Still reading, but I am so in love with Mr. Iyengar already!

Such an awesome book!

Provides great perspective on life as it pertains to yoga practice. I am fortunate to have found a yoga teacher that teaches his methods in a very serious manner and I can't express how awesome it has been! Even if you can't find the teacher, read the book and watch hs Youtube vids, you will learn a ton!

Change your perspective on yoga

This book is very well written and Mr. Iyengar clearly dispels any thoughts that the Iyengar school of yoga is simply about precise physical alignment. This book systematically describes the philosophy and psychology of yoga journey. There is a quote that is something like yoga is a journey to god, it has physical health and happiness as a by product. My personal experience with Iyengar teachers is simple: you will not get hurt. I believe that is behind the focus on technique and alignment. I have not seen this in other popular schools of yoga. No one living has Mr. Iyengar's street cred, but two other writers I have read seem to have a similar focus:

Much wisdom

So much wisdom and insights in this gem. B.K.S Iyengear was a generating force in mastering and teaching of yoga. Even if your are a practitioner in another lineage I would recommend reading.

In Iyengar's own words, what yoga can do for you

If you do Iyengar yoga, this book is a must read. It is written by BKS who explains in depth his philosophy as well as how to have a more meaningful practice.

A must read

If you have ever read light on yoga you will understand the profound change this man went through in his entire life. With Light on Yoga he seemed so strict about each limb (8 limbs of yoga) and how one should practice. Then when I picked this book up he was as gentle as a butterfly! It touched my heart and inspired me to continue my practice

Beautifully Written and Extensive Book on the Art of Yoga!

I've done yoga off and on for a few years now, but have never had a consistent daily routine. I've purchased a few books on how to do yoga, how to breathe, when to inhale and exhale in the poses, and quite honestly I've always felt a bit confused about certain things. Also, I haven't gotten serious about doing it regularly...until now. I'm very inspired! After reading much of this book, I feel like I'm able to understand more clearly the deeper aspects of yoga. It is an art. I also feel ready to commit myself to a regular yoga routine, thanks to Iyengar and his words of passion, wisdom, compassion, and inspiration!

Where have you been all my life!!;)

As a yoga teacher I am always looking for ways to ‘enlighten’ myself. I found this book by accident at the studio where I work and started reading. Dealing with some personal things in life this happened to be perfect at that time! I love it! Deep and simple at the same time! I keep going back and retreading it!

Fantastic ovoerview of yoga philosophy

Clear and elaborate review of yoga philosophy from all angles. Quick and enjoyable read. I highly recommend for any new to yoga philosophy who want to get a holistic understanding

Nothing "light" about the book.....

Profound thoughts explained in the most simple manner. That's all one can say about this book. It is difficult to write a more objective review, because the impact the author will have on you will make you giddy. It took me about 3 months to complete my first read of the book - not because it is difficult. The book should not be read - it should be absorbed and reflected upon. Being raised in Eastern philosophy, I am aware of the profound thoughts explained in the book. However, the beauty of the book is its secular approach in explaining thoughts similar to that of the Gita, in a simple manner everyone can easily relate to. To me, this is the modern day version of the Gita. Having owned all the "Light on.." books by the author, this book is the perfect "integrator" of all the other books by the author. An absolute must-have.

Autobiography of a Transformed Life

Excellent book for those who have adopted yoga as a serious discipline. Personally I have been practicing for 2 years and this book has been a tremendous help revealing the deeper insights and purpose of yoga. One thing that really strikes me is how a man this advanced in age can possess a mind like a laser. His life is a true testament to the healing and transforming power of a dedicated yoga practice. There are several good books on yoga out there and Light on Life is among the best, inspirational and informative.

A Must Read!

The title pretty much says it: wholeness and inner peace. Written from a mature perspective by one of the forefathers of the modern yoga movement. A must read for anyone interested in more than just asana, the book delves into theory, history, philosophy and ways to take yoga off the mat and into your life.

A little to out there for me

A little to hokey for me

An Amazing and insightful read

This book illuminates many yogic insights. It inspires living with intention and consciousness. It explores how freedom arises from discipline!

Incredible!

Life changing.

Five Stars

Awesome, every word, every sentence is full of thought provoking meaning.

This book is so full of wisdom that I would just make myself look stupid trying to describe it

BKS Iyengar is a true inspiration. This book is so full of wisdom that I would just make myself look stupid trying to describe it. All I can say is that if you have the courage to read this book, it might change your life.

Poetic

As a real fan of both Patricia Walden and Iyengar this is a great bood on cd. I wish it was unabridged, but it is still uplifting to hear. It took me a while to get into it, as Ms Walden has a very soothing voice and it can lull you in the beginning, but by the third cd, I was hooked. Iyengar really simplifies the deep philosophy and opens up much thought for self reflection and clear places for extended studies.

BKS Iyengar - Light on Life - The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom

I first borrowed this book from a friend. After reading a few pages I knew I had to have it in my library. I feel this is one of the finest books that gives the 'theory' of the yogic lifestyle. This book explains everything one needs to know about yoga. It is more about the journey to finding oneself through the yogic lifestyle. It is not about exercise as Yoga is not exercise. Yoga is the path as the title of the book states - It is the journey to wholeness, inner peace and ultimate freedom. Fortunately I was able to meet the master - BKS Iyengar in 2009. I feel honored to have found this wonderful avenue at the age of 67. I only wish I had found it much earlier. Then I would be a much healthier person...yet, I can now begin healing and rejuvenating my body. Thanks to a great master!

Excellent read

Very interesting

It's great. Read it

This is the first yoga book I read and it struck me how many similarities there are between these yogic teachings and much of what we know in western psychology and psychiatry. It's filled with nuggets of wisdom at every turn. I look forward to discovering more.

Gentle Wisdom

Much gentle wisdom. Written in a loving spirit and beautiful style, easy to read and absorb.

Five Stars

A wonderful introduction to Iyengar's philosophy of yoga and life. A must have for any Iyengar yoga practitioner.

Reading what he has to say gives yoga a beautiful essence to be practiced

Iyengar speaks from the heart about yoga. Reading what he has to say gives yoga a beautiful essence to be practiced. The way he broke up the chapters into specific types of bodies, physical, mental, and spiritual allows a new perspective on life.

A Truly Spiritual Reading

I cannot think of another book, except the Bible itself, which is so spiritually profound and touching. There were many instances when I felt compelled to write down certain thoughts - the words were so well chosen and so true. The book starts slow, and I was on the verge of putting it aside, thinking that Iyengar may be a great yoga practitioner, but not a great writer. Soon, however, the narrative won me over. I can only describe this book as magic. If you like reading philosophy, this one is definitely for you. Unlike Western philosophy books, it is very practical and to the point. There are some things I could not understand, but what I did understand was beautiful and true. It provided a fresh perspective, and a motivation to change.

Excelente guia!!

Es una relato que lo va guiando a uno por todo el camino de yoga. Es como ir de la mano con mama a la escuela. Es como ir de la mano con papa en el nuevo camino. El yoga es para todo. Gracias

Great book!

Do not hesitate to buy

I was anticipating that this would be a "dry, tedious, text-book" read. I was definitely wrong. This book is fascinating and easy to read. Do not let that lead you to believe that it is less than complete and extensive. Great book. I won't be giving this away when I am finished reading it the first time - it will stay in my library.

The man is awesome! B.K.S. Iyengar--hailed as "the Michelangelo of yoga" (BBC) and considered by many to be the most important living yoga master--has spent much of his life introducing the modern world to the ancient practice of yoga.

Just perfect

Explains the point of yoga !

Secrets to long and happy life clearly explained

having recently read several books on yoga, I noticed many mentions of B.K. S. Iyengar, so decided to go to the source. Pleased that I did, I find his book to be excellent and will be ordering another one for a friend. He makes ancient, well established principles, available to anyone seeking to improve and enlighten ones life. Makes me wonder why mankind, as a whole, remains ignorant of such vital information.

Beautiful book, Full of a lot of wisdom

Beautiful book although the audio version is better.

A very introspective read

Easier to read and understand than I was expecting!

This book reveals the most subtil and deep approach to yoga. It gives you true awareness about youself and the universe.Yoga is much more than just making asanas, it's a journey to inner peace that we can perceieve the world from another perspective. Necessary read for the aspiring self searcher

This book outlines so many lovely and worthwhile practices for an aspiring Yogi. The detail at which he expounds upon is peitic and truthful.

One of my Favorites

IF you're a fan of Iyngar's Light on Yoga (his translation of the Yoga Sutras) and you haven't yet read this you're in for a treat. I give this book as a gift to all friends or acquaintances who start getting interested in yoga. It is a relatively easy read but the subjects dealt with are profound. Very friendly feeling book that almost slyly introduces some of the deeper concepts underlying yogic philosophy. It is really a casual introduction to how to live a sane and healthy life and how to build and support that life through the practice of yoga. Highly recommended.

Genius!

A genius at work...and a fascinating book. I feel truly blessed and humbled that he has shared his knowledge and wisdom of 80+ years in a heart warming fashion. This is the second copy I bought, and gave it as a gift to a dear friend.

read this book & your practice will change forever

mr. iyengar change my body, with it changed my life. he explains the practice so brilliantly, that the quality of the practice changes from being painful at times (at least for me) to being inspirational.

Outstanding!

The most amazing book on Yoga I’ve ever read. A great piece of work by shri B K S Iyengar.

Inspirational.

A+++

Great insight into the philosophies of yoga

Great insight into the philosophies of yoga, Hinduism, and BKS Iyengar himself. A must read for anyone studying Iyengar yoga, and a great resource for anyone who is a student of yoga.

Not as described

Writing on pages throughout book even as was listed in very good condition closer to average. Great book though

LIGHT ON LIFE

For me, a life changing journey towards inner peace. A book, a philosophy, a way of life I am trying to pattern my own after. The journey begins.

read it!

Loved it and my Deepest respect

And I always thought...

...he was just another pretty face. Here is a work of genius. Iyengar's sincerity exudes from every page. What a fine man, and what a gift this book is, from one who has already given us so much. He has plumbed the depths of his yoga, and we are all the richer for it.

Wisdom in Every Sentence

This book is full of wise, memorable, and practical metaphors for incorporating yogic philosophy. As other reviews have stated, read it slowly. Mine is dog earred and underlined throughout. I read it until I finish it and then I start over. It's never the same book twice.

Going deeper with Yoga

Transforming!

Wow

At a time when I needed to hear from a master yogi Mr Iyengar did not disappoint...I am certain to re read and read again and again and now back to my practice... Remember yogis to practice ,practice ,practice !

Great book, a must read for yogi's out there.

Great book!

good mind expanding read

This is a good book. He tells you some about himself, but not excessively. His philosophy "feels" gentle, but not sappy. I'm not finished with it, but it's make be think and question. Any book that does that is a success.

Transformational

At 60 yrs old I come later in life to Iyengar Yoga. Beautifully written in endeavouring to explain process that have to be experienced before being able to be understood in any way. A second reading is helping my comprehension. One of life's reference books.

Extremely profound

In simple words, this book presents a precipitated insights from many decades of experience in practicing and teaching yoga. From all the books about yoga that I have read this one is the most profound.

Wonderful description of the principles of yoga.

One of Yoga's Bible

This is a great book. It generalizes wha you truely should feel inside your body during asana practice. Iyengar revealed a world where yoga practice become soul dance, freeing from physical body constraint. I have certain senses as described in the book and does not know how to proceed and improve. This book cleared my confusion. It is one of yoga bible - Must have for dedicated yoga practioners.

Iyengar

This book reveals techniques for practicing asanas which are not evident and hadn't seen explained with such simplicity. Also explains how to better meditate, how to breath and relax the brain. For Iyengar practitioners, it will let you understand why his insistence in giving space, practicing with discipline, the role of pain, the intelligence of the body and so on...

Still relevant today for the sensible advice it offers anyone desiring a better relationship with themselves and others.

but I am so in love with Mr

WooHoo

Iyengar is the man! Love this book

Great for serious yogis

Very spiritually deep & honest book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the aspects of yoga that go beyond the asanas (poses).

: ): ):

:) :) :)

Every yogis must have!

This guy is simply awesome! He`s got the best way to explain really complicated issues. I really love how he makes me feel as we`re just having a light talk around the subject! :)

A must have!!

This is an excellent book. I know I'm going to have to read it several times to get it fully if I ever get it fully. An fantastic depiction of what yoga is all about!!

inspiring book

This is a good book to read if you are a serious yoga practitioner or teacher, since it reviews in a simplified way the Yogasutras of Patanjali and Iyengar's point of view on life and life experiences. It has nothing to do with religion, it is just a different take on life that might prove useful and enlightening.

I love this book

I love this book. It fills in the gaps of so many questions, why, why, why. Unfortunately I ordered a 2nd hand book and the shipper simply packed it in an envelope allowing one end to get slightly crushed.

Still relevant today for the sensible advice it offers anyone desiring a better relationship with themselves and others.

but I am so in love with Mr

Highly recommended

Beautiful and inspiring

"This is not yoga by the body for the body, but yoga by the body for the mind, for the intelligence." I loved this book. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I bought it; I only knew that I am a yoga (asana) addict and Iyengar is sort of the father of western yoga, so I thought perhaps I would read the book about his philosophy. I am so glad I did. I can't say things better than Iyengar himself, so here are some quotes. Overall, if you're on the fence about whether to get this book, I would say get it and you probably will be glad you did. "We must discover what each sheath of being longs for and nourish it according to its subtle appetites." Ego is the "small, selfish creature you normally take yourself for." Great beginner book on yoga philosophy

Gives a good overview of central ideas on yoga philosophy. Also provides a background to Iyengar as a person and his practice of Hartha Yoga.

Beautifully written words by BKS IYENGAR. Inspiring!

Horrible Layout for Kindle Edition

content is good. But Kindle edition layout is horrible. Average every 3 pages the top/bottom line is cut off. I really want to return this and get a hard copy one if I can!

Beautiful book!

Continuation

Have to honestly say that Im not quite complete with the reading here because I juggle more than 2-3 readings at one time. I do enjoy this book as I am not too knowledgeable about yoga itself but finding that the content, as least half the book I've covered and is teaching me about yoga, life and how someone's life can be very different than your, yet exactly the same. Food for thought.

a basic read for most any Yogi

for yogi's who wish to delve deeper into the inner journey
