Several things set this book apart from other treatments of today’s leadership challenge. Chief Appleby’s concentration on the singular importance of personal leadership values is presented in fourteen easy-to-read, stand-alone chapters based on his diversified forty-year career in the Philadelphia Fire Department. The Chief’s soul-bearing willingness to share his leadership shortcomings—and their specific causes—makes for a fascinating study of human failure and eventual triumph. The probing introspection questions for each of the values offers the reader a rare opportunity for honest self-reflection. The personal stories provided to reinforce understanding of each value, which are often heart-pounding tales from the fireground, lead the reader to a deeper understanding of the essential connection between personal values and true leadership. Most importantly, although offered through the perspective of life lessons acquired by crawling down burning hallways, the Chief’s leadership lessons have an across-the-board relevance for all of today’s leaders—regardless of position, occupation, or endeavor. These timeless leadership lessons offered for the reader are simultaneously educational, entertaining, and enlightening. This is not a book to be read once and then placed on a distant shelf—it provides a continuous roadmap for your leadership success.

The best book on leadership I've ever read

Outstanding! I absolutely loved the authors fourteen leadership values as presented in this book. Explanation of each value is backed up with a story reflecting how he learned or applied it. I only wish that I had this book as I rose through the ranks of the fire service. I would have read it over and over again, especially after each promotion. The introspections at the end of each chapter (Value) can be used by budding leaders as benchmarks of where they really stand. Highly recommended for aspiring leaders or those who simply like to read about how a super effective fire chief and tremendous leader developed his skills. Bob Marchisello

Must Read!

This book should be a required read for any current or aspiring officer in the fire service, but is beneficial to any leader in general out there. Chief Appleby’s book does something that many others don’t: it forces you to evaluate yourself and how good of a leader you are. I had the privilege of being one of Chief Appleby’s students at Neumann University and this book is a direct extension of the lessons taught in that class. Buy it now, and grab a copy for a buddy too, I promise you it will be worth every penny.

A must for Fire Service Leaders

I'm proud to call Gary Appleby a mentor and friend. I've learned more about leadership from Chief Appleby than any other single source. It's great that he has final put his wisdom into print. A must for Fire Service Leaders...you won't be disappointed!

Simple, insightful, and direct

Having had the honor of working with Chief Appleby a number of times, I've long known of his integrity, empathy and service. The photo I posted was made because of his level of trust for me. The book is a glimpse into the processes of a devoted and highly respected chief. The names, not surprisingly, are of other excellent Philadelphia Fire Department leaders whom I have either known or heard of. This is a book I will reference and recommend for a long time.
