The journey to 100 friends begins with a single conversation.

Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve. Luckily she meets Tadano, a timid wallflower who decides to step out of his comfort zone in order to help her achieve her goal of making 100 friends.

It’s time for the national health exam at Itan High, and the excitement of eye exams and height measurements have fanned the flames of competition for the unremarkable Makeru Yadano. She’s determined to beat the class idol Komi in the health test, and Komi’s total obliviousness to their impassioned duel just feeds Makeru’s determination. As the epic battle heats up, how will Komi handle her first rival when she’s barely made her first friends?!

One lives in a fortress, the other in a cage

The second volume of Komi Can't Communicate delivered on the promise set by the first and I can say that it joins We Never Learn and Yuri Is My Job! as the best new manga discoveries I've made in 2019. We see Komi starting to branch out and engage in social activity. She has Tadano and Najimi at her place, she goes out for ramen and on a shopping trip, the gang tries to figure out her clothing style. There are some new people. Yadano sees herself as a rival to Komi. Nakanaka is a highly eccentric type. Then, there is Yamai, who has some major issues, as Tadano finds out the hard way. It's a series that is funny and touching at the same time. Above, I mentioned the series Yuri Is My Job! and it occurs to me that Komi has parallels with its protagonist, Hime, as both are defined by the facades of their lives. Komi's social anxiety has the unintended effect of making her come across as an uber-cool Olympian goddess. It took Tadano to figure out Komi is an ordinary person with a problem. Hime has a carefully constructed facade of adorable perfection which she hopes will allow her to be seen as the ideal mate for a billionaire. That gets disrupted when she starts working with a girl named Mitsuki, who hates Hime's phony front but just might love her. You could say that Hime's facade is her fortress, but she's always worried it will crumble, leaving her exposed to the world. Komi's facade is a cage; gilded and it gives her an enviable social position, but it's still a cage and she wants to break out and become part of the world. It is interesting to see two characters with similar situations but different perspectives.

Good Continuation

Volume 2 of Komi Can't Communicate continues the story of Shoko Komi, a high school girl with crippling social anxiety. Along with the return of the already introduced characters of Tadano and Najimi, new characters are introduced in this volume. These include the competitive classmate Makeru Yadano and the obsessive Ren Yamai, who has an (unreciprocated) crush on Komi. The story continues much as the first volume as Komi and friends go about their lives as high schoolers while Komi tries to improve on her abysmal communication skills. Overall I found this to be an excellent second volume. Everything that was done well in volume 1 is done just as well here. This includes the good art. The artist did an excellent job of using expressive faces and other poses to really create many lively and amusing situations throughout the book. The story is fun to read as well as Komi and friends try different things to try to break Komi out of her shell. I definitely got several laughs reading this. In conclusion, if you enjoyed volume 1 of this manga, you will certainly enjoy volume 2.

5 stars for the manga, 3 stars for VIZ

This manga is definitely 5 stars, it is subtle but hilarious (especially page 48 lol). The art style compliments the humorous nature of the story and is pleasant to look at. VIZ's quality control is going downhill though, as both the first volume and this one have had misaligned spines. Just be aware that there is a very high probability that your volume will have a misaligned spine or some kind of spine damage.

After a few misfires, we've got a good start

I wasn't really sure what all to think about the 1st volume. Everyone seemed, hurried? They seemed a bit off, plus there was some bullying, which I detest. Now, the group grows. Little-miss-psycho is an odd addition to the group. The rest seem, mostly, like they're right where they should be. Art, very good. I really enjoy this creator's style. Dialogue, good, mostly. A bit strained at times. Characters, believable mostly. Some relatable, some detestable.

About a VERY shy girl who trying to make friends w/a guys help.

Komi the Brave!

I was so excited when I got this manga after reading the first one, it was cool seeing Komi make more friends and stick up for herself in her own way. If you loved the first volume, you’ll love the second one just as much!

Komi is Popular

Komi makes more friends. All Komi’s friends are special... Komi still can’t communicate. I’m enjoying the series so far. Tadano and Komi get along well and I love watching their interactions the most.

Love the series!

This is such a great series. Komi is so relatable. Looking forward to the next volume in this series and seeing where Komi stands and her Progress.

Very enjoyable

It's a very interesting take on something I've never seen before I enjoy watching the development of komi as she gains more freinds.

Makes me happy when i read this.

Every time I read this series it makes me happy, makes me feel like a kid again. This manga is one of the best and the only one that I'm up to date with.

Makes me happy when i read this.

Every time I read this series it makes me happy, makes me feel like a kid again. This manga is one of the best and the only one that I'm up to date with.

The social challenges continue

This a great manga featuring a socially awkward teen, her "normal" friend, and a host of manga/anime stereotypes that she tries to make friends with

Short and sweet

Just as good as the first book. Like the introduction of the new characters as well. Also awesome to see them interact without Komi around.

Surprisingly good

Really great series so far. Looking forward to reading more.

Good

Love these books can’t wait to get the next one.

Very funny

This volume was really funny. it made me laugh at the interaction of Komi with her 3 new friends. The crazy obsessed friend kidnapping Tadano made me laugh too much.

~4 Stars (Contains light spoilers.) Komi clearly attracts a certain kind of character to herself, as we see more obviously in this volume. She's seen as perfect, and thus draws admiration and awe and jealousy, only that makes people obsessed with her instead of angry. We meet Yadano in this volume. She's competing with Komi (in her head) during the sport competition in this volume, and this leads to her attempting to be friends with Komi. Only she's so obsessed she's literally crazy and will threaten anyone in her way. There was a point in this volume were Yadano goes too far, and I really liked how Komi stood up for herself and her friends, despite her own shyness and anxiety and want for friends. But then it kind of dwindles into a friendship anyway. I'm conflicted about this, because Yadano is actually scary and should be put away. There are some fun plot lines after this, including Komi and friends going to eat ramen, and going shopping. She also meets a new friend in Nakanaka in this volume. She's a bit of an odd one, as is usual at this point, and while she freaks Komi out at first, they soon form an understanding, which is sweet. This series is crazy. But it's a lot of fun, still, and I like Komi a lot. (A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much!)

The Eyes!

Found the first book on a search of new mangas on Amazon and thought the premise had promise, but I never expected something this hilarious and adorable. Shoko has serious communication issues but because of her beauty and expressions, she is thought to be just cool and aloof. Tadano is her first friend and has the ability to wordlessly communicate with Shoko. You can tell throughout the second manga that Shoko adores Tadano and when he is threatened with harm, you can feel her sadness at it being her fault in her estimation. That scene alone gave me the feels because you can actually feel her heart breaking over the incident Othewise, it is just one comedic incident after another. Shoko makes more friends, each more bizarre than the last one. You have Najimi, who might be a girl or might be a boy, that issue is up for debate. Then there is Agari, who might be worth a clinical study or two on neuroses and Yamai, she is a full on loon, 'nuf said. Just being part of Shoko expanding her horizons is enough for me, but the last two chapters sold me big time. I know Shoko's dream is to have 100 friends, but deep down, I think she would be happy with just Tadano, the one person who truly gets and understands her. I have had this volume for a few weeks and I have read it a dozen times because it is nearly perfect. All I have to say, is please let there be an anime in the future.

entertaining and cute

Komi’s quest to have more friends continues in this second volume, and unknown to her, she has gained a rival, Yadano. Yadano looks at Komi’s perfection and decides she wants to defeat her in at least one thing, but she fails to do in every aspect of the health test. And Komi’s social anxiety comes across as reserve and grace to Yadano, like it does for all the classmates who don’t know her, so she keeps trying. Aside from her, Komi gains another stalker follower in the form of Yamai, who kidnaps Tadano to befriend her, and is thankfully unmasked by Najimi. It is played off for laughs, of course, but I’m getting tired of another creepy girl crushing on her (we already have Agari for that). After that, they all go on activities together, like eating out and shopping, and goes a little into Komi’s home life, too. Overall, it is cute, adorable and has the friendship between Komi and Tadano shown to be deepening.

Buy this manga

This is and D-fragment are by far my favorite slice of life comedy mangas I have ever had the pleasure to read buy this manga!

Warm Fuzzies and Serious Decisions

Previously in volume one of Komi Can't Communicate, we were handed a few characters worth of introduction as well as the first couple of bodies that Komi adds to her quest for 100 friends. In volume two, things take a little bit of a change. Volume one was very much just a heart warming experience, but in volume two Komi shows that she has some legs to stand on and is no pushover. This is very evident when a stalker, byt eh name of Ren, obsessed with Komi, abducts Tadano because he has grown too close to Komi. However due to Osana's random quirkiness, he is rescued by Osana and Komi. It is during this interaction that Komi faces off against the knife wielding Ren, telling her that she will choose who her friends are even if others do not approve. A positively powerful move on Komi's part, essentially defeating the largest push back at Komi's attempts at making friends. Of course in a, comedic, turn of events it would seem that somehow Ren ends up not being pushed too far away from Komi. (or arrested for abducting someone and threatening to kill them) Of course this can't be all firm stances on friendships, and just as soon as we get away from the stalker we're right back at it with the soft times. We meet a girl, named Nakanaka, suffering from a case of chunibyo, you know, the characters in anime that wear eye patches and talk like "the dark dragon lord calleth my name once more". Anyways, she is a lonely girl whose eccentricities have pushed everyone else away, but leave it to Komi to push past her social-fright and lend a hand to the Nakanaka. Leading to both a new friendship for Komi, and a way for Nakanaka to become more socially accepted. Being friends with the popular kids has its perks. And as usual we get some minor side stories that are just plain fun, like Komi going to a Ramen restaurant and attracting the attention of everyone as she enjoys her meal. Or a shopping montage that features Komi putting on different dresses where, amusingly enough, it is Tadano's more average style that leaves Komi feeling the most comfortable and gets the best overall scores from the judges. It's far less character building material, playing on subjects we already know about Komi and her new friends, but it was still enjoyable. It shouldn't be long until we see an anime adaptation being announced for this series, or at least I would like to think so, given it's positive popularity and very low negative reception among those who have read it.

Amazing series for first time manga readers

I've been wanting to get into manga for some time but didn't want to read something that was already an anime since i'll already know how it ends more or less. I heard a lot of good things about this series so i bought the first volume at Barnes and Noble and I love it. Loved it so much I went on Amazon the next day and bought all the available volumes in stock. This series is charming and hilarious with an amazing cast of characters. Definitely a must read during this cold winter season.

great high school manga

komi makes several new friends even though she is still very shy. a must have manga.
