Beautifully designed heirloom animals
I purchased the book in late 2020 and made George the dog. I wasn't able to find the exact yarn for his trousers at the time. I have since found an equivalent from the same manufacturer. I always purchase extra yarn for these projects as I ran out of yarn on the first pair of trousers I made for George. I use the yarns and colors recommended by the designer when possible so I can get a feel for the designer's original vision. I know many people choose to knit parts of these animals in the round and I did try this the second time I made 'George', however I prefer knitting flat and seaming, especially for the limbs. Since I knit with a very tight tension, I find it gives the pieces a better shape. I take breaks between animal projects. I find knitting such small pieces can be hard on arthritic hands. The book - I wish the print was larger and darker. Unfortunately for those of us with vision shortfalls, this can be quite challenging. It would be helpful if the book opened flat. One has to weigh down the pages in effect destroying the binding, to keep it open. There are some errors in the book, but these were minor and I found corrections in Ravelry just by looking at the specific animals. I would like to see more stitch counts on rows, so I know I'm on the right track. I'm one of those people who feel I shouldn't have to do any math when I look at a pattern. Spell it out for me. That's why I buy a pattern. I did see some posts noting the patterns are more complicated than necessary; in my opinion, I found them efficient. Who is this book for - I think anyone who can knit, purl, increase and decrease and has a local yarn shop close by or an intermediate/experienced knitter who is ready for something that may be something different than a typical sweater, hat or mittens. It's a learning experience, for any knitter. One does need patience and needs to be able to follow directions. Read the entire pattern before knitting the 1st stitch. Know that you'll improve with every stitch and every finished project. One thing I find really disappointing - impossible to reach the designer. What's the point of putting a contact email on a website if you're never going to respond. I get people get busy, but don't forget who supports your business. Overall, I enjoy these projects and obviously love the end result and will likely continue to do more of these projects from this book since I already have the yarn. My brother saw all of the projects I'd made and was absolutely in awe - of course I'm making one for him as a surprise.
Love it
I whish there wad a video tutorial as well but the book itself is very clear.
Awesome Book!

Lovely book
Beautiful pictures, excellent instructions, cute designs.
Patience pays off …
AT LAST Several months later …I received all the materials and I’ve successfully completed GeorgeTheDog in time for baby shower. He turned out great! Changed review to 5 stars. I did run out of the dark blue color for his jeans and had to improvise with some old yarn for a couple of rows and missed out the pockets. I think I took the instruction to leave long strands to weave in rather too seriously. I’m much more confident to knit another of the animals now that George is leading the way. REVISED REVIEW OK it might be a COVID supply chain problem - I eventually was able to order yarn from E.T.S.Y. And multiple sets of needles so I’m looking forward to starting my project in a week or so. As I was reading the patterns it occurred to me that since I’m knitting for a baby it would be great if instructions had included discussion of using knitted knots instead of buttons and toys had embroidered eyes. I can look up instructions on the web but this is a safety tip/reminder if you’re giving the toy to a little one. ORIGINAL REVIEW This is a very nice book and I’m looking forward to knitting but I simply cannot find even on the web and from the manufacturer the colors of cotton the author recommends. Specifically for George The Dog I can’t find Catona Rosewood 258 or Catona Denim Dark Blue Mix 150. I can’t even find equivalents. Can someone advise? Can’t even get in touch with author or ask questions via Amazon listings.

Good selection of animal patterns. Includes clothes and accessories for the dolls.
Best Book EVER ~ Wonderful Projects and Excellent Instructions
Really enjoying this book and its fun patterns. My first attempt was with George the Dog. I used scrap yarn I already had to be certain I could understand directions, and complete. I did and now have ordered the suggested yarn for another George. As another reviewer mentioned they inserted a wooden dowel between body and head for stability. I did too. I used a 8" chopstick and worked great. I doubt the head will sit well without this added measure. I did use Knitpicks 100% cotton SHINE yarn on body and really like it. Its recommended for toys. Surprise will be that this is actually a larger finished piece in size than the cover photo on book appears. I also suggest you copy the Abbreviations page to refer to while knitting. And visit writers webpage www.boobiloo.co.uk to copy her tutorial pages for clearer instructions on some stitches. I needed these for the, PCDD stitch, and it became clear how to correctly master. Also get 16" circular needles in the sizes recommended. As well as set of double pointed and straights. I'm an experienced knitter but not top notch for difficult sweaters sizing etc. Yet I mastered George to my satisfaction. A must is to Block each body piece before stitching as the edges roll. The Mattress stitch works well for all items. Only item I can't locate is really good toy filling. I used the polyester and stuffed tight but am on a search for better material. Hope this helps. Enjoy this treasure of a book, its the most detailed clearly explained knitting pattern book I've E V E R had. Thanks to the creator, Louise Crowther.
Fun projects
Used to knit a lot and lots of fancy projects when I was younger,so this challenge didn't bother me . However, I find the patterns to be very challenging and definitely not for the beginner. Needed to find help on youtube to explain the special stitches used ,as the description of them is not always well explained. Used 100% cotton on my first animal as it won't stretch when filling with fiber fill, but with the different stitches and having to close all the seams, it was challenging to do this without seeing any flaws. Many do overs to get it as flawless as possible. Would go with a yarn blend next time and maybe change to merino wool for the clothes.
Fun
Many,many patterns. Fun
Wonderful Patterns!!!
Very good instructions for these adorable animals. After seeing one knitted up on display in my local yarn store, I borrowed a kindle version of the book from my library I think it was, though possibly on kindle unlimited. I made the pig for my students at school to play with. They LOVED her! I so wanted to make more, and following the patterns in a kindle format was challenging, so I purchased the book. Using the book, I have knit but not assembled yet, the mouse. Too cute. I will say that being able to enlarge the print on the kindle, and highlight my toes, was nice. I wish the book used larger font for the text for my old grandma eyes.

Worth every penny, I’m in love
I’ve had this book for about a month and I can’t speak high enough for its contents. Wow. What an incredible resource book as well! I refer to this book for the abbreviations and descriptions constantly. I’ve completed one full animal, 4 articles of clothing, and the arms and legs of my next animal. Quick and easy yet very challenging to test your skills. I’m so impressed with what I’ve made so far and will be making many more of these for my little ones (2,4, and #3 due in the spring) they will make incredible gifts for the other kids in my life as well. Buy it!!
Beautiful Book
I love the animals in this book. Knitting and making up the duck was fairly easy. The dresses and jacket were much more complicated. I tried to make the coat for the fox, and gave up because I made so many mistakes. I managed one dress, but the bodice took several tries before I got the hang of the pattern. I used the yarn specified for in the pattern for the duck, but chose a substitute for the clothes. I was very pleased with how it came out, and my 19-year-old said it was her favorite Christmas gift. I have started the cat, and plan more. Some of the clothing patterns are very complicated, but they definitely are worth the effort.
Absolutely Fabulous!
I pre-ordered the book because I couldn’t resist the picture on the front cover. Inside is a treasure trove of thirteen knitted personalities, complete with fabulous wardrobes. I just finished the first (just in time for a granddaughter’s birthday - no, I’m not sitting here with a bunch of cats, seeking to knit my own family, although that would be ok too) and, while it was quite a bit of work, the result is really worth it. The animals are more like puppets, 16 inches tall and great to hold or pose. The clothes all fit perfectly, even the shoes. I’m a fairly experienced knitter, so the knitting part was easy. The patterns call for knitting the body parts flat on straight needles and then sewing the seams. Next one, I might try knitting them on sock needles in the round because my seams are not an example of neatness. Beautiful book, great patterns, many helpful pictures and hints. The patterns are very detailed and lead to a well-finished result. I’ve knitted stuffed toys/animals before, but this one really stands out. Very, very nice!
The most fun knitting project
I love this book! I knitted almost all of the animals. The instructions are very clear and the yarn recommended is fabulous to work with. It also allowed me to learn new knitting stitches and grow in my confidence. I gave most of the animals as gifts this year.
Great patterns
The directions are very clearly written. Very good photos in the book to help you understand the written directions. Uses different body, head, ears and limbs to create many different animals. Includes patterns for clothes. level medium.
LOVE IT
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I have made two foxes, a ram, and I'm finishing two dogs. I wanted to make an elephant but there isn't an elephant in the book so I devised one -- I used the pig head and nose, then extended the nose using the ram horn. I made up the floppy ears (I wish I made them a little bigger). My 20-something granddaughters love them and have asked me to knit a ram for one and the raccoon for the other! I am a beginner knitter, every stitch you don't recognize there is a youtube video to help you, that's how I did it. I highly recommend this book and have been recommending it to my knitting friends. I'm waiting for the next book... maybe with elephants, lions, bears...hint hint!
Don't Be Intimidated
This is a great book. The instructions are very thorough and even though i only began knitting last month i am accomplishing making Tilly the Hare with relative ease. I was dubious at first because of other reviews but now that i am actually working on a project it is quite simple. My one piece of advice if you are a novice and don't understand the abbreviations just youtube it because it will save you a headache and your final project will look the better for it.
Lovely book, great toys to make
This is a wonderful book to make kids animals, the clothes are lovely. There are great pictures and instructions. But the abbreviations are confusing, there are ones I have never seen or used before. I think a beginner knitter would have problems making these animals. I have made 2 and starting third. Enjoy
Lovely clothes. No sizes.
I love this book, the nifty clothes, and love leafing through it. I'm hoping to make most of the clothes for my dolls. It's pretty hard to believe, but nowhere does it say what size the animals are, in the book or anywhere. All I found is ONE review here that says they are 16" tall. Even on Ravelry, nobody mentions the size of the animals they make. I guess I'll have to get going, and see what I get at different gauges.
Love These Creatures
Started making the horse as a baby gift for a friend who runs a dude ranch. Swapped out a dress for the overalls and it was a huge hit. From there I was hooked! Made another "horse" and adapted the rams horn to create a unicorn for my granddaughter. I had already made her a doll and clothing wardrobe from the companion book (also, HIGHLY recommend getting both as the clothing is interchangeable). Currently working on the dog for my grandson because he saw how much his sister enjoyed her new friends. All the patterns were spot on accurate and easy to follow. Would recommend for intermediate knitters. Great way to test out some new skills using tiny sample clothes that can be incorporated into larger projects. Advanced knitters will enjoy all the details in these tiny patterns.
Beautifully written book
This is my favorite knitting book! The instructions are well written and the patterns are delightful. My recommendation is to knit the arms, legs, bodies, and tails in the round with circular needles whenever possible. The product ends up looking much smoother, and you have no seaming to do.
My wife the knitter loves this
My wife, who is an avid knitter, was always sad that most yarn animals and dolls are crocheted. I just happened across this book for knitters and thought I'd order it for her. She loves it. She says the patterns are clear and the assembly relatively easy. She said, "I've never been good at construction, but, this book does a great job explaining how to do it". So far she has completed a dog for our son---he loves it and she loved doing it. She says, "highly recommended". The pictures are great!
Not for the inexperienced knitter
The animals in this book are too adorable for words, but they are by no means easy, and I consider myself an experienced knitter. Nevertheless, I am on my second animal, George the dog, having almost completed Charlotte the Fox. Attaching the head on Charlotte was not clearly explained and e-mails to the author go unanswered. To keep the head from flopping around I inserted a small diameter dowel up into the head and down into the body. The author must have done something similar to get the poses that are in the pictures, that clearly was not a procedure on the book, however, so if the author reads this review, maybe she will explain. I do plan to make all of them eventually.
Clear and detailed
Clear instructions with great photos to go along with the directions. Some new things that I didn’t know how to do but easily searched on YouTube to help learn the new stitches.
Hand knitted animal & their clothing
These designs & patterns are incredible. Her attention to detail is exquisite, not an adjective I’ve ever used before to describe crafted knitted “toys”! She’s an artist😊
A cute small zoo
A fantastic book about 12 adorable knitted animals. The patterns are easy to follow and the clothes fit perfectly. At the end of the book there is a section about knitting techniques which helps a lot because the instructions are clear and the pictures very helpful. Recommended for those who want to combine passion for knitting and love for animals.
Fun and Easy to do!
This is a terrific pattern book. The directions are very clear so even beginners can create fun critters! It is a must have for Grandmas who want to have fun creating for their grandkids!
Outstanding knitting critter book
Very professional and I can’t say enough about the author absolutely stunning items to knit
Wonderful book
Adorable patterns of cute animals. Great to use up yarn stash on these little outfits too! The Patters are pretty simple and the directions are easy to understand. I'm in the process of making an animal friend for my God son. They don't have a teddy bear, so I'm using parts of these patterns to make one up. There is a section explaining how each part of the animal is knitted and tells how you can come up with new animals. I would recommend this book to people who have basic knitting down. Knit, purl, yo, increase and decrease.
Please have a bit of experience first
I really love the dolls and all the great little clothes. Love the recommended yarn, wish it was a touch cheaper. Luckily I had made a few dolls using little cotton rabbits patterns, off Etsy, before trying these. Without having done those first, these patterns would have been confusing to put together. Not to knit, just to put together. Pleased overall, good purchase.
Excellent
Good price because it has so many patterns and they are easy to follow.
I did it! And it turned out great!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I consider myself to be an intermediate knitter but was concerned about the quality of the instruction before beginning what to me was a sizable project. The instructions are great! I am very pleased with the results of the horse. I am expecting my first grandchild and I made the horse as a shower gift for my daughter. Everyone has had very positive comments about how cute he turned out. I’m planning now to make more. So fun😋
So Much Knitting!
This book is a gem. Brimming with patterns, lovely photos, and great explanations, it is complete and all you need to make a menagerie of friends, including shoes, accessories and a varied wardrobe.
Awesome book
Awesome book. Ordered another one for my sister. She loved it. I’ve made the mouse so far.
So cute!
Beautiful book and easy to follow if you’re a knitter. I had to look a few stitches up on YouTube but overall I’m pretty happy with this purchase. Working on the raccoon for my son to get through quarantine!
Beautiful Knitting Book!
I have been purchasing single patterns since I started knitting. My kids love knitted animals. With this book, I won’t have to buy any more patterns. The animals are cute. The directions are well written. There are plenty of clothing options to mix and match, as well!
Impressive variety.
I haven't made anything yet. I love the variety it offers. I enjoy making animals that delight children, therefore, I look forward to the new opportunities this book offers.
An easy pattern to follow with good Ideas!
A lighthearted gift for children. I’m in process in making the Dog So cute.! A well written pattern to follow! Many choices in making clothing. And colors for a total fun knitting Experience, enjoy the beautiful Finishes as well.
Great Projects!
The patterns are easy to follow, but be sure to read them all the way through before starting. Also, found some inconsistencies in the hedgehog's dress pattern, but was easily able to compensate for the mistake in the pattern (only had to rip out 3-4 rows to fix it). I really do love these patterns and the final product when they are done.
Knitted animals
Absolutely love this book. Some of the better knitting patterns for animals.
Adorable
I am so happy that I purchased this book. It has the cutest patterns for adorable animals, along with the clothing. If you are into this, it’s a must buy!
Worth the purchase
Love this book and have made quite a few animals from it. The catona yarn makes very nice animals.
Cute Patterns
I’m knitting the duck right now. The pattern is well written and easy to follow. The pictures of all the critters are well done.
These patterns are adorable.
The only trouble is finding some of the exact yarns and buttons.

Beautiful clear directions for these adorable knitted animals
Very cleverly designed so clothes are interchangeable. The animals themselves are unique, well done. Plus, the book itself is just beautiful—lovely photos
Not for first time knitters
Love the pictures and the variety. I will need to allow myself time to figure out these patterns. I expect that I will misunderstand at least a few times. Goes with the territory.
Great and fun knitting book
This is such a cute book and I can't wait to knit them for my granddaughters. Easy to read patterns.
beautiful book, excellent instructions and easy to understand
already made the horse, went together without any problems.there are pictures with good instructions. she explains very well. made a pair of sneekers in sock yarn for another doll, very happy with the results.
Knit Yourself A New Friend
I absolutely love this book! The patterns are adorable and very detailed. I have completed my first animal and presented it to my great-niece. She loves her bunny! I am now working on a second, a mouse. The patterns are for an advanced beginner knitter.
Clear instructions
A wonderful book with clear easy instructions. I love that there are standard body parts for all the animals. Also included is clear instructions on how to put the animals together. I have bought other patterns were the instructions end with " sew parts together". This book has made knitting stuffed animals fun again.
Great book
Lovely book such sweet projects to dream about But currently no time to actual try to make them
animals are adorable
Animals are adorable but I second some of the previous comments. I certainly needed more yarn than called for despite using the recommended needle size and yarn. I am an experienced knitter but had more than one problem with the stitches count on the decreases and wonder if this book is not as good for those of use who use the continental style of knitting. I have finished the mouse and am moving on to the dog but think there are a few problems with the patterns
Must-have in your library!

Making animals for grandkids
Knit animal friends
Knitted Animal Friends Over 40 Knitting Patterns for Adorable Animal Dolls, Their Clothes and Accessories by Louise Crowther Thought this was a cool idea for a book especially because it'd make a perfect Easter gift. Highly photographed and exquisite color combinations Table of contents and tools, materials and short intro Essential notes is a must read for this book! What I loved are the very fine detailed fronts of the sweaters/shirts on the characters: lacy and cabling like you'd make for a human being. Has one section on standard body parts and how to make them step by step instructions, row by row and some illustrations. Each animal has it's own chapter where the animal is actually named. There is a brief description about the animal and then the pattern. Dimensions are discussed, yarn types and how to make them. Photos are shown along the way with important information to make it easier for you to assemble the animals. I like that you are encouraged to change the colors of the outfits and mix and match from the given instructions. Use your imagination! Detail is paid attention with accessories such as small buttons, purses, belts, etc. There are so many I want to make as gifts and for charity. I personally think anybody who can knit and purl could make these if you have the patience. Like that they prefer cotton as it's easier to wash and dry. Small size 2 needles are suggested, pack your patience if you don't this size often. Some charted designs are included. Techniques and other useful information and about the author listed at the end. Such a cool book! I received this review copy from F+W Media via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion. #KnittedAnimalFriends #NetGalley
Great pandemic projects!!!!!!!
This book is wonderful. The patterns are very well written BUT make sure you read the pattern and the essentials passage. Not projects to do while watching TV - they take concentration, but so rewarding. I opted not to knit the prickles on the Hedgehog’s body as I thought it would make her dress look odd, and I am pleased with the results. Now making the cat and dog. Using the specified yarn makes a big difference and it is not expensive (can get it on Amazon).
Great for good knitters
When I got this book, I was aware that some of the projects would be beyond my skill level. I was right, but I was up for a challenge. With patience and persistence, I've been able to make many things from this adorable craft book. It has instructions for knitting adorable animals and wardrobes for them. The instructions are clear and fairly easy for me to follow. There are plenty of photographs of the completed projects as well as the animals and clothes on process. These photos really helped me as I was able to reference them as I was knitting and made sure I wasn't messing up too badly. My kids are a bit past dressing up dolls, but they like to have these cute creatures, with or without a set a clothes, on display on the shelves in their bedrooms. My daughter is looking forward to having time to make one herself. I definitely think a knitter with more experience than I would have an easier time with it. It's been taking me a few weeks to complete an animal and it's clothes, but it's getting faster each time as my skills improve. I'm certainly glad I have this book for project ideas.
Well-Written Easy to Understand Adorable Patterns!
The Knitted Animal Friends: Over 40 Knitting Patterns for Adorable Animal Dolls, Their Clothes and Accessories By: Louise Crowther is worth every penny. This book is full of beautiful patterns that are not hard to read and knit thanks to the clear instructional words and pictures. In this book, there are 12 animals to knit which are as follows ; dog, cat, horse, mouse, fox, squirrel, hedgehog, pig, raccoon, hare, duck, ram and owl. As well as the animals there are shoes, accessories and outfits patterns to knit up for the animal friends as well. All the techniques needed are included with detailed photos and instructions such as seaming, color-work, picking up stitches, casting on in different ways and so forth. I especially appreciated the information on seaming since that's not my strongest area when it comes to finishing some knit item. I really like that the animals all have the same basic body with only a few variations so once I knit up one animal, the rest come easy. The clothes, shoes and accessories can be mixed and matched between all the animals which is fantastic. The pictures in the book are darling and I love the color choices. Other things I love is the fact the knitting instructions is row by row so it is easier to keep track of where you are. I am quite pleased with this book and highly recommend it to intermediate and up knitters.
Well worth the effort!
I am a fairly new knitter (only about 4 months of experience when I started knitting from this book). I’m absolutely loving this project, and I’m watching my knitting skills evolve quickly as I go through the patterns. So far, I have made several of the animals, and almost all of the clothing. Unlike some other reviewers, I haven’t had any problems in the pattern instructions, stitch counts, etc. in fact, and finding that most of the techniques employed in this book translate well into full-size garment making and other knitting. Some of the tails are tricky, and took me a couple of tries (specifically, using short rows to make a curly pigs tail - wow!) but came together with a little perseverance. Gauge is critical to these projects. I chose to use the recommended yarns in lieu of substitutes, as they were readily available (and reasonably priced) from several internet sources. I am a relatively loose knitter, and so I was in surprised that I needed to go down several needle sizes in order to get gauge. Once I figured out the right combo for my knitting style, every piece has fit together perfectly, and every garment I have made fits perfectly, too. If you aren’t afraid of some new techniques, and if you are willing to commit to consistency in gauge, you will love these toys and outfits!
Challenge Yourself
If you want a challenge, knitted toys are a great choice. They require attention to detail, but the results are lovely. Especially the patterns in this book. I like that each character is built from a stable of standardized body parts, like building a kit house. Each character clearly lays out the pieces you'll need to make, any unique parts for that animal, and then instructions for their outfits as well. The book is beautiful, but be warned. If your eyesight isn't the best, the publisher really could have done better with the print in the instructions. The print is so small that it looks a medium gray, so it's doubly hard to see. I have hundreds of knitting and crochet pattern books, so I know this isn't the norm. It's well written, but man you'd better have a really good light to read by. And I'd recommend sticky flags to help keep your place.
Unique collection of homemade critters!
What a wonderful book for knitters! (And even non-knitters! My BFF who doesn’t knit says she’s tempted to learn knitting just so that she can make the adorable creatures in this book. 😜) Louise Crowther has really put together something special here. This book has clear and concise directions for you to make your LO (or any special person in your life) a homemade knitted animal. There are 13 critters in all in which to unleash your knitting prowess. Along with the easy-to-follow directions, I appreciate the many pictures to help guide me along the way. I’m currently pregnant and heading into my third trimester. My goal is to make one critter for my daughter before she arrives at the end of September. I’m not sure if I’ll achieve my goal since there is so much that still needs to be done to prepare for her arrival and pregnancy has its own challenges (namely fatigue, lol) that makes everything a little more difficult, but I pick up my knitting needles whenever I have any free time or I’m relaxing. So we shall see if I finish Charlotte the Fox before she gets here. 😉 This is a wonderful book for knitters and I highly recommend it if you want to challenge yourself to make something whimsical and unique for the special people in your life (or just for yourself. 😉)
Great Knitted Animals and the most adorable outfits for them
The instructions were well written and very clear. These animals are just adorable. The outfits for each of the animals are so detailed and cute and I cannot wait to get knitting.
Lovely collection of critters
This is a lovely collection of knitted critters. As you suspect, the basic animal body is modular -- the body, head, arms, and legs are all "the same", and then there are different ears or other extras. The basic body is also altered by color changes, often intarsia. And there are many little clothing patterns. I greatly admire all the details in the patterns here. Examples in the book are made with different versions of Scheepjes sport weight: Catona, Catona Denim, and Stonewashed. Needle sizes are a variety from US 2-4. In case it's not clear, working with small yarn and needles, making tiny things, making shaped things, and doing intarsia (color changes) are not for beginners. However, when one is ready for these skills, making stuffed animals is a relatively quick thing. (Although there might still be something to be said to trying some of these with larger needles and yarn, so that it's a bit less fiddly.) There's a wealth of fun ideas here. It's a lovely book.
Absolutely not for beginners
The patterns in this book are seriously adorable but they're definitely for extremely advanced knitters. I'm okay at it but by no means am I an expert and I found most of the patterns too difficult to attempt. My mom, who has much more experience with knitting than I do, was able to follow the patterns but even she said they required a lot of concentration and skill. I'm sure some minor adjustments could be made to the supply list but the other issue I had with this book is the patterns call for relatively expensive yarn.
Gorgeous book!
Knitted Animal Friends Over 40 Knitting Patterns for Adorable Animal Dolls, Their Clothes and Accessories by Louise Crowther is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This book has the cutest knitted animals in it! It is not for the very beginner because it doesn't show you how to knit. If you already know how and can read a written instructive pattern then this is perfect for you! Each animal comes with a list of all the items you will need for the project along with the knitting pattern. There are tons of pictures throughout the book! Each animal has shirts, underpants, some have shoes, a purse, etc. It is all so adorable! If I planned to give the doll to someone under 3, I would embroidery the eyes instead of using buttons and use Velcro instead of buttons on the clothes. This is a gorgeous book! My favorite is the ram and the hedgehog!
fun patterns
The book is full of patterns to make animals and outfits for them. The animals are supposed to come out about 16 inches high. The patterns use three weights of a particular brand of yarn, unknown to me. The patterns seem to be well written and easy to understand. The animals are all made with standard body shapes described in the beginning, and then each of the patterns adds or changes stuff to fit the animal. I love how cute they are, and all the clothes and accessories are really nice, too. There are no charts, except for some colorwork, everything else, even lace patterns, are written fully. There are some techniques described at the end, with lots of photos. You can go to ravelry.com to check out each of the patterns and what other people made with them. I see a bunch of finished projects there already.
Beautiful projects with excellent instructions
I can't wait to get started on knitting some of the animals in this book. They have SO much personality and my grandchildren are going to love them this Christmas. I find this knitting book very unique. First, you have one single pattern for the body of every animal, and then switch up to the head/features pattern for each individual animal. The instructions are clear and concise and have a good reference for looking up any stitches you may be unsure of. Next - the accessories! Oh my! There are sweaters and jackets and shoes and they can be made for any of the adorable animals because the bodies are all the same! I love it! These animals have maximum personality and any child (and OK, adults too!) are going to fall in love the minute they're received. I can't recommend this book enough! If you knit, this book is one you definitely want in your pattern library.
Georgeus book and patterns
Knitted Animal Friends is a wonderful book for knitters who are looking for more than just a cute softie (cuddly stuffed toy). You get patterns for 13 different animals (cat, dog, horse, mouse, fox, squirrel, hedgehog, pig, racoon, hare, duck, ram and owl). Cute characters indeed, but you can also knit their wardrobe!. Patterns for little shoes, sweaters, pants, scarves, bags, etc. All animals have a standard shape and size, so mixing and matching accessories as well as body parts is possible. From a technical point of view, the book is also gorgeous : instructions are clear, perfectly organized and displayed. It is most suitable for intermediate and experienced knitters, as it contains more advanced techniques. What I loved the most about it, is how customizable these softies are. Did I mention that each animal has a name and character description?, extra cuteness. A delight to own and play with for sure (not just for kids, they look great as decoration too).
Truly Wonderful Patterns in a Beautifully Illustrated Book
This book looks so inviting, the artwork, photographs, and layout are beautiful. The finished animal friends look very professional, and sure to be loved by young or old recipient. I'll be starting on George the Dog first, with a few changes, since I will make a female bull terrier dog (Target/RCA dog white with a black ear) using the George pattern, but changing the ears for Charlotte the Fox ears, and the outfit to suit a female dog (not sure which outfit yet, they're all so lovely). It's terrific that the patterns are interchangeable, and that the instructions are clear, and that I have the yarn needed to make my first animal friend for a little human friend. I think that the patterns are clear enough for even a relatively new knitter to try, and that the techniques covered here will add to a knitter's skills very nicely, and will produce a satisfying finished project.
good detailed instructions.
A lot of craft books that have you make critters produce either cheap looking results or they are overly complex and hard for me to complete. This book was really the best that I could hope for. The instructions are clear and understandable, the projects are cute, and the ones I'm working on are coming along great. The instructions take you all the way through to the finished project and don't seem to assume you will "figure it out" on your own. i do recommend that you read through each instruction completely until the end before you start, over a cup of coffee and a biscuit is my preferred way. Overall I'm really pleased with it. I don't have time to make them all, and its a hard choice of what to start next.
The cutest knit animals!
This book has THE CUTEST patterns for knitted animals. I love that all of the animals are the same size, so the accessories are totally mix-and-match. Especially because the accessories are possibly even cuter than the animals themselves! Tiny sweaters, knickers, shoes, jackets, dresses, and more. I want to knit every last one of them! I haven't had a chance to actually knit any of the animals yet, but the instructions seem to be very clear and easy to follow. I'm just waiting for my yarn to get here so I can get started! And the book itself is lovely, with clear, crisp color photos and a useful organization. Each animal has its own chapter, but there are also parts of the book that consolidate things like the shoe patterns, which apply to all of the animals, and so on. Note: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, but the opinions expressed here are my own.
Exceptionally cute knitted animals with solid instructions to make them yourself
A softback 8x11 book with traditional color photographs that shows the project details with professional lighting. There is a list of the tools and materials you will need for the projects, a separate page with a key for knitting codes, and a description of the standard body parts of the knitted animals. There are really good detail pictures on each animal and their accessories which provide guidance for more visual learners. The book gives you detail patterns for 13 animals and shoes and accessories. The techniques are detailed enough that an advanced beginner will be successful. The images are also just pretty and cute to look at. If you are only seeking this book to see the cool results, you could consider getting the Kindle version to save a dollar, but for actual knitters the printed book will be superior.
So Cute - Clear Directions
These really cute stuffed knitted animals are made with sport weight yarn. The author recommends 78% cotton and 22% acrylic mix Scheepjes Stonewashed yarn and US 2 needles. There are standard body parts (body, arms, and legs) as the base and then detailing per animal is done with color changes such as foot or chest color. Once the animal is done you make the clothing and some even have shoes and a purse. The directions are very clear. This is detailed work with sweet designs. There are over 40 patterns. I am impressed and inspired after reading this book. Rating 5 stars = Love It.
Nicely done
She said this will work perfectly for her and there are plenty of patterns to work with. Things are laid out well enough that even I might be able to cobble something together, so for someone like her who can actually do things like this with her eyes closed, it'll be nearly like reading sheet music. Organized and really cute patterns in here that the kids will adore. And hand made, so much more of a keepsake that way than a stuffed toy purchased from a store.
Super Cute Inspiration for Those who are no longer beginners
We jumped at the chance to get a reviewer copy of this book because it fits perfectly into our Christmas themed knit animals. We were not disappointed at all when it arrived. It is well illustrated and has a ton of great characters in the book. We were and still are a little intimidated that this is not really a beginning knitter's project, but both my partner and her daughter jumped in immediately and they have done some backtracking, but all in all they are pretty excited about it. Probably will be more pursued in winter, but all in all we love this book.
Beautiful photos, comprehensive instructions, super cute projects
The animal projects in this book are so cute it has me itching to dust off my knitting needles and start knitting again. Who cares about scrapbooking, quilling, or cookie decorating, the little booties and clothing patterns in this book are crying to be made. And because my knitting is so rusty I really appreciate how clear and concise the step-by-step instructions are and the fact that there are step-by-step photos too. The publisher really did an outstanding job with the photos, layout, and graphics in the book. This book is so beautiful it would make an interesting coffee table book for the non-knitters of the world.
Adorable dolls!
This book is full of beautiful patterns for the most adorable dolls complete with charming wardrobes! The dolls are fresh and modern with lovely charm and the patterns are easy to follow. I personally would have preferred that the dolls be knit in the round instead of flat, but if you are dedicated you can adapt the patterns if you wish. I had no trouble following the patterns, and though this isn't a beginner book, I think with some determination a beginner could complete the projects in the book. Highly recommended!
Quality book
There are so many cute patterns in this book! I love the different animals and the clothes that go with them. This could keep you busy for a long, long time. I saw this book at my favorite Knitting Boutique after I bought it, which goes to show what high quality it is. This store doesn't mess around. I do wish the heads didn't look squished from side to side, but that is a personal preference and you can see what the heads look like from the cover so you know what you're getting before you buy.
More than a toy these are Art
This knit zoological stuffed toy book rates right up there with Alan Dart for quality and detail. Each animal is so beautiful and unique in their details from species right down to their clothing that I want to make them all. These patterns are definitely for the intermediate to advanced knitter but I do not want to be discouraging as I think a beginner should definitely add these to their goal list as they are certainly worth aspiring too.
Super Cute...
This probably isn't the best book for the average beginner, but the animals are super cute. The final products would make such lovely gifts. It includes instructions for a dog, cat, horse, mouse, fox, squirrel, hedgehog, pig, raccoon, hare, duck, ram, and owl, along with shoes and accessories. It's a precious book, full of potential treasures.
Great Knitting Book
This book is perfect for those who are at least mid-level experienced knitters. I think most of the patterns are too complex for those who are newbies or just starting out. It has great patterns for creating adorable knitted animals, which are really unique and make fantastic, personalized gifts. For hard-core knitters, this book is a great addition to their knitting library. Highly recommended.
knitters will enjoy
The skilled knitter will enjoy making these projects. Most of the animals are familiar from favorite books and there are patterns for clothes and accessories for the 12 animals in the book. The body for the animals are all the same so clothes can fit all the projects. The book is well illustrated and easy to follow. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Adorable animals, with clothes and shoes!
This is one of the best books for knitting animal dolls I have ever seen. The designs are adorable, yet they are easier because most have a similar main body. Hard to pick a favorite, the raccoon, ram, and horse are very cute, but they all are. There are also patterns for clothes and shoes! The section on techniques including colourwork is very welcome. These animals are sure to be a child’s most cherished toys.
Close Knit Creations
I love books about knitting and this particular book offers clear instructions for the novice, such as me. I think the hand knitted animals are just adorable, especially the dog. The dog is my favorite. Each of the animals featured in the book have a chapter devoted to them and the cute outfits the knitter will make. It is a bit over my level of knitting as of now, but it is a good start.
Great for family fun!
My wife and her best friend worked on these with her daughters and they had a blast! A lot of cute stuff came out of this too, which was very popular and the lady's day get-togethers at church. I was disappointed though because they didn't sew me a MacBook Pro that I wanted!
Honestly every knitter needs this book
These animal patterns are sure to be loved by kids of all ages. Adorable clothing and shoes, I cannot wait to get to work on them all. Patterns are extremely detailed with many pictures included, guiding our stitches exactly so finished projects will be flawless. All of these animals could be made again and again in varying colors. Would make amazing baby shower gifts.
Holy Guacamole---Hours of Cuteness!
After crocheting several amigurumi animals, I am just learning how to knit and can't wait to get my skills up to speed so I can tackle these adorable projects. It's clear that these patterns have been tested and the instructions look clear. The price is reasonable compared to other knit/crochet books and patterns. Highly recommend!
A wonderful addition to my pattern library.
Love, Love, Love this book. Have made 3 and want to make them all. I have at least 19 requests for a special animal. Not for the beginner knitter. But a good challenge for an intermediate knitter. I’m learning something with each one.
Wonderful book!
I love this book! I am an advanced knitter and have found the patterns very well written. I have made the hare and am working on the horse. I’ve also knit several pieces of clothing.
Amazing!!!!
I LOVE this! The animals are so unique and wonderful! This makes a GREAT coffee table book the pictures and illustrations are phenomenal. What a perfect gift this will make for anyone who knits!
An advanced guide
This isn't a book for beginners. You have to know how to knit. But if you do, this book is clear and has cute designs that you can mix and match to make cool animal dolls that are great gifts or decor.
Really cute
Really cute. My friend’s little daughter loves this book.
Excited!
So excited to try these! I do wish the text was a bit bigger but happily I have a copier I can use to blow up the patterns. Great detailed full color photos.
Great
Such a nice book. Aesthetically, the book is beautiful. The patterns are easy to follow. Just a really nice book. Would make a great gift for a knitter as well.
Another great doll book by a wonderful knitter/author.
Haven’t used it yet but looked through it and I have the same doll book and know it will be just as nice as that one. Looking forward to making beautiful animal dolls for my grandchildren this fall and winter.
Great book
Very instructive
Amazing knitted animal patterns.
Wonderful patterns for amazing animals. For fairly experienced knitters. Use suggested yarn for beautiful results.
Delightful!
Delightful patterns - cutest animals with adorable clothing. Fun to look at, even more fun to create! Above average knitting skills needed.
Simple and clear
Appreciate the base pattern and adaptability. Also like the addition of patterns for “shoes” and “pants” which can be used as one likes.
Really Cute Critters!
Beautiful book! I just bought yarn to make my first animal. After some searching, I was able to find the yarn used in the patterns.
very cute animals
great book, knitted animals and cute outfits, hope to try one soon
Great pattern book
I've not knitted any yet but the book is great and we'll worth it
This is not a book for beginners. I think even some intermediate knitters might have problems
All the patterns are adorable! I found that some of the patterns are written in a complicated way that need not be. There is terminology that I have never seen before and when I went to glossary to explain it wasn’t there. Thank goodness for the internet.
Knitted toys
I don't usually knit for kids, but I was very impressed with the layout of this book. It's well written, the layout is inspiring. I'm pretty fussy about the books I buy, and not normally buying books for knitting kids things, means it has to be a good book. The samples shown in the book are great, beautifully knit and clean looking, if you get what I mean. Good job on the whole book, well done.
Well designed patterns
Love this book! I’ve made 2 of the animals now. The patterns are well written and easy to follow. The end result is a beautifully crafted toy that will be a keepsake forever.
Cute Critters! Trust the patterns and instructions.
Lots of helpful pictures of these enchanting critters. A little above my skill level but I persisted. Lots of variety in clothes. Working my way through the mouse as my first one. Gonna name her Mulligan Mouse.
Fantastic Patterns Beautifully Presented
This book is not for beginners - unless you have patience. The patterns are not too complicated and with patience and YouTube, I think a novice would not have too many problems. The patterns are lovely and varied. The presentation of the book is beautiful. Totally recommended.
Lovely selection of different animals
I can’t knit but bought this so that a lady I know can knit some for me for my Grandchildren. I have only seen a photo of the dog so far but will pick up soon. I’ve also ordered a fox and a pig. Looking forward to giving them to the children.
Very small font
Got the book yesterday. Very desapointed...I love the book but have hard time reading since the font is very small and very light (kind of gray) I'm thinking of return it!
Good instructions. Fun to do.
Layout of book is great!! I'm just going to get started on "the ram". I recommended it to a freind who works at our local yarn shop.i showed it to her and she ordered one as well. The wool recommended in it is not easy to find but I switched to equivalent yarn
Beautiful book
Beautifully written. The animals are all really thought out. She even has patterns for underwear. Amazing book for accomplished knitters.
Adorable
Wool has been ordered and I'm looking forward to making a couple cute bunnies to give to my grandkids for Easter. They would make super cute gifts as well.
Great seller
Great condition and quick delivery. Thank you. Looking forward to knitting some new friends.
Charming
Easy to follow patterns. If you like knitting toy animals and miniature clothes this book has a lovely selection. The clothes can easily be adapted for use on other toy patterns and with other yarns.
very unique patterns
looking forward to make some of these animals for my grand daughter. I was worth waiting for.
Great patterns
I haven't knitted anything from the book yet. want to knit them all. It's hard to find patterns for flat work instead of circular. Best knitted animals ever with the cutest outfits.

My wife loved this book. Shipper was prompt.

J’adore ce livre, il contient beaucoup de projet à tricoter. Bien expliqué et illustré.
After 50 years of knitting, this book teaches me something new.
Original patterns, that are fun to make.

Loved It

Fantastic book
I love this book it has a wonderful selection of animal dolls with a variety of mix and match clothes, dolls are approximately 16 inches tall when completed, created with sport weight yarn but I’ll be making mine with DK. Eyes are 10mm buttons but can be embroidered for safety.
Really clever patterns
This is lovely book with really clever patterns. Some can be a challenge so this probably is not for beginners. Be prepared to knit in the round for the clothes. The detail is what makes these animals special. I do wish they would put abbreviations on insert so you can pull out and use to follow each pattern. I am a fan and will be buying the wild animals book too, which will help add to wardrobe as all clothes interchangeable
Beautiful patterns
Adjusted them to fit Luna lap ins
Was enthusiastically recieved as a gift
Havent done any of the patterns myself as it was a present for somekne else. Book and instructions looked impressive and well presented.
Don't be daunted by advanced stitches
I absolutely love all the animals and their mix and match outfits in this lovely book. I do not consider myself an advanced knitter and was at first a little intimidated after reading through the list of abbreviations for all the different stitches and techniques. However, after typing in each abbreviation into YouTube I found numerous, easy to follow, tutorials. I also found a list of errata, shown here, after reading other reviews.
Easy to follow instructions.
Easy to follow instructions,good book.
Fantastic patterns
Knitting
Knitted animal friends
Love that this is based on one body, arms and legs etc but has many different head patterns so useful for making items to sell for charity. Also has some lovely clothing patterns that could be mixed and matched. Would have given 5stars however I find the patterns are printed on shiny paper with very small print making them almost impossible to read (I have good eyesight by the way) and follow whilst knitting. Photocopying the pattern to mark off rows and to read easier etc is also difficult due to the pages not opening easily. Would recommend
Love it
Recommended by my Sister who is Queen of crafting, can't wait to start knitting
Clear patterns
A beautiful book to look through, but because the patterns are so well written it is possible to make the animals as pictured. I used to hate making knitted toys and dolls but Louise has changed that and I am steadily making them all.
Experienced Knitter of 44 years & crochet last 2 years
The book is colourful and explains making up techniques very well. However the actual knitting pattern rows, I notice brackets for repeat stitches is not formulated like a standard pattern. At times I had to count the end amount of stitches to understand the repeats in a row. Generally I can fly through a pattern be it crochet or knit and follow instructions very well. This I struggled with and I took more time fathoming out the pattern than knitting. The sports yarn tends to be an American yarn and not available in many UK stockists. Luckily sourced via the internet. However I had to purchase quite a few balls of yarn to get the free delivery, to make it worth while. Nice yarn to work with tho.
Takes some getting used to
It was written (so I believe) for american knitters. (some form of elvish!) but one you get the hang of it, it easy enough. Over explains things.
Great knitting patterns
This book is lovely. On my 3rd animal. New book with wild animals coming out next month, which I will be getting. If you like knitting, you’ll love these.
Excellent, but not for beginners!
Originally, my wife was lent a copy of this book by a work colleague. She immediately fell in love with it, but realised that knitting the animals would not be short term projects. She decided it would be a good idea to have her own copy. Consequently, I ordered her a copy and it arrived within 48 hours. My wife ordered the quantities of wool specified and on their arrival, she began to knit 'George the Dog'. My wife is an experienced knitter, but found the pattern hard going in places. She realised that some of the abbreviations were not standard. She kept a photocopy of the abbreviations page at hand to obviate the need to keep turning away from the pattern (and the risk of losing track of where she was up to!). Despite, occasionally cursing under her breathe, she enjoyed the process and was very pleased with the finished article. She did run out of wool on one of the clothing items and thought that quantities specified in the pattern were too small. She recommends that the prospective knitter gets extra wool, just in case. Overall, my wife thought the book was excellent, but would not recommend it for beginners. PS. She now in the process of knitting 'Holly the Hedgehog'.
Great book
Haven’t done any yet but looking through the book I can’t wait to get cracking.
Good selection of patterns
Some great ideas in this book found lots of great ideas
Unnecessarily complicated patterns.
Complications were unnecessary. Some instructions were different but led to the same results suggesting a lack of careful editing. The use of increase in loops rather than knit twice in one stitch is the main reason for the unnecessary complexity and mathematically cant be resolved by switching to knitting twice in one stitch. It would require a pattern rewrite. Some problems arise from differences in American and English methods. I have knitted many patterns in french so am used to national differences. Should have been rewritten for the English knitter.
Knitting animals
Patterns are quite hard to follow
Excellent full of good instructions and photos
Excellent book for knitters wanting to knit animal toys! Well written obviously by a knitter with fabulous photos and instruction and advice! I can’t wait to get started always wanted a Mr Fox 🦊 I love the horse and pig and all the clothes are interchangeable with the knitted animals excellent value for money
For Expert Knitters
Found pattern instructions to be very complicated despite the fact that I have been knitting for almost 70 years plus I found several mistakes in the instructions.
Love this book
Was a bit unsure about buying this book after reading some negative reviews but I am thoroughly enjoying knitting the animals and clothes. They are so well designed and a joy to knit. Small point but there really needs to be an explanation on how to sew the head on to the body as I searched for ages to find it (it’s not there) - just did what I thought best and it was fine.
Unusually cute toys
The animals in this book are really cute. The clothes for the animals (which are mix and match) are beautiful. Some of the patterns are quite challenging so not for beginners.
Ok
Tutto ok
Superb book
Book is superb and the wife loves it
Ideal to match with Luna Lapin
Was reasonable but found having to do a lot using circle needles and some explanations in the abbreviations were confusing especially when you could just put knit 2 together, I’m a fairly confident knitter but found some explanations just hard work
Delightful book
The knitted animals are beautiful - but there is a lot of work needed to produce them plus quite a lot of new needles and accessories to purchase if you haven't got them already - eg 3mm 3.5 mm circular and dpns. markers, tapestry needles, small wool holders for multi coloured work. The items are inexpensive however but it does add up. The Sheepjes yarn colours are fabulous. The knitting is quite tricky and I would say it wasn't suitable for an inexperienced knitter or someone who isn't prepared to find out and study the techniques. I found the clothes needed a lot of concentration - so not easy to watch a program on the tv and knit!!
love it
love the patterns really well explained and illustrated, the animals are very cute. would recommend to anyone
Informative
Lovely book and patterns but I haven’t tried them yet, lots of abbreviations to get my head around
Nice and easy to make
I like the fact they had clothes on them, it finishes them off
Great selection
Have only started one project but the instructions are clear. Lots of choice with clothing so I can see how to personalise the toys. Already looking forward to the next volume.
Great book
I am a great fan of Luna Lupin and wanted to get this book mainly for the knitted clothes. The instructions are fairly clear but I would say you need to be and expert knitter as most the patterns are quite complicated and use circular needles and double pointed knitting needles. I knitted one so far and it does look lovely.
Great book
A really lovely book with lots of different animals and clothes to make. Learnt some new techniques, which are well explained. Very reasonable price.
This is the best toy knitting book ever!
I am overwhelmed by the quality of the patterns in this beautifully illustrated book. The instructions are so detailed and easy to follow. I have been able to achieve fantastic results that have blown away loved ones that I have given the animals to as gifts as well as myself. Through knitting the animals in this book and using YouTube when I came across techniques I hadn’t done before I gained a real sense of achievement. The finished results are so beautiful, especially for sitting on shelves with their amazing dangling legs. The clothes fit beautifully and children (and me) love the fact that they can dress and undress the animals. The animals with tails that fit through the clothes are particularly special. Make more than one and they can mix and match the clothes. The fact that the yarns used are beautiful to knit with are washable is great. I cannot recommendation this book highly enough. Thank you so much Louise, you got me through lockdown!
Lovely book
All good
Beautiful book
I could thoroughly recommend this book. It has beautiful illustrations of the knitted animals. The ani,als are so cute and the clothes can be interchanged. I have just started the duck. Also I found the recommended wool in my local shop as usually with books I buy I cannot find the exact wool.
Lovely book
Received for Christmas from my children. Can't wait to have a go at knitting some of these.
Ingenious patterns and a lot of fun
I've only made some of the little clothes so far, not the animals. The patterns are very clever and fun to make, being like miniature adult ones, and there's no sewing up after you've finished knitting as they're mostly sewn in one piece. Very ingenious. But it does mean that you need to use circular needles as well as straight ones, and also quite a lot of concentration. Very sweet results, though! I believe that the animals are much more straightforward to make.
