Stay away from the paperback version, buy the hard cover!

My 4 year old loves the detailed illustrations! She has me go over ever page. She LOVES helping me read this book. DO NOT GET THE PAPERBACK VERSION!!! The paperback version has the snow being green and not blue like the original versions. Plus, the page illustrations are cut off ever page. Not sure if it's the way they print these books or the way they cut them at the printers. The hard cover has the illustrations corrected. Ended up giving away my paperback and bought the hard cover.

More for ages 4+

Got this book in one of my amazon book subs for my daughter. Cute book but more for ages 4+. Thes a lot to read that she lost interest after a couple pages. Shes 2 years old going in 3. Good book to hold on to when shes old3r though.

Don't buy the Kindle version!

I used this in the classroom for several years and found it a great way to introduce the concept of community. I ordered the kindle version for my grandson and was deeply disappointed. It looked like the book was scanned (badly) and the pictures and the script did not align. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Buy the original in soft back or hardback, if available. What a shame, I feel that the author would have been horrified with this version.

A New Winter Classic in Our Home

My daughter (almost 3) has been enjoying a copy of this book from the library for the last month, so I decided to purchase a copy for our collection. We live in Minnesota, so we enjoy stories about snow for at least 1/2 of the year! :) I love that this mighty snowplow has a female persona ("Katy" or "K.T."). The detail in the illustrations is so fine, and my daughter loves to look at the overview of the whole city and pick out the different buildings. The glittery "snow" texture on the front of this paperback edition is a fun touch (but it does not seem to shed glitter all over the house-phew!), as are the stickers on the last page. I think it will be fun to tuck this book away at the end of winter and then pull it out when the snow flies again next year.

Katy: Strong and helpful

This is a book that I've read to my children who as a girl and a boy both enjoyed for years. I've bought this book for baby shower gifts. Katy is a tractor who is able to do the biggest jobs, but this means that she might not be used during normal times. This time, Katy helps the entire city and surrounding area dig out after a blizzard. There are emergencies that require her strength and she comes through every time. My daughter liked this because there was such organization in Katy's paths to plough out and my son liked that Katy was strong and used her talent to help others. I enjoyed it even though I had to read it multiple times, like any books the kids loved.

Love the story, but not the print...

Have the super old version of this... The old one is a blue color, and not green. There's also no glitter and stickers. I personally don't like the addition of the stickers. It's super annoying because it is stuck to the book, you can't rip it off. I don't mind the color changes and the glitter, but the stickers have to go.

Great story get the full picture book not board book

This is a great book. A bit long for a board book, I think it would be best fit in the full picture book format. My 2 year old does fine with it but would be too long for a younger listener to sit through. The story is nice, the illustrations are engaging and I love that it is a transportation themed book where the vehicle is female! Great addition for any transportation obsessed kiddos.

My kids love this book!

We checked this book out from the library and my kids (boy, 8 and girl, 5) both liked it so much that I had to buy the hardcover. It is a story about a tractor who loves to work. In the summer she works in construction, and in the winter, she has a plow. The only problem is that there's hardly ever enough snow to need such a big tractor-style plow, so she usually gets left at home while the plow trucks head out. Of course, in the book, there is a giant snowstorm, and Katy saves the day, eventually even rescuing all of the plow trucks. This is a great story for kids from about 3-9 I would say. It is a pretty quick read, but there are some maps you can study to open up more discussion. One of my favorite parts about it is that the main character is a strong female, but, importantly, the book makes no big deal about this. There is no mention of trying to prove that she is as strong as the males or anything of the sort.

Text altered

I'm not sure why the publisher of this book chose to leave out some of the text because there was plenty of room on the pages. Not acceptable to change the text of a children's classic.

Best winter book for toddlers that avoids stereotypes

My 2 year old loves this book and asks to read it often. I love how the tractor in the book is female, wish that wasn't so rare in this modern age. Cant' wait to read him other Virginia Lee Burton books in the future when he's ready for them!

The stickers that coincide with the book are awesome!

My son loves this book! We’ve checked it out from the library many times and I decided it needed a permanent place in my sons childhood. This edition is fantastic with its sparkly cover and the bonus stickers on the back page!!

Amazing story of hard work and respect..

The book tells the story of a small town of hard working people that must all get to work even when it snows.. Kat is a bulldozer that stays in on most snow days until the big snow arrives and stops all the other truck based plows. Than its Katy's turn to come out of the garage and save day. There is a long list of people that ask Katy to help them such as the Doctor that must get to the hospital to save his patient and the police need to get out to protect the city, and the electricians that need to restore the power...Great story.

Clever, creative and timeless

This book was always one of my favorites growing up as a kid. Being from Buffalo, snow and snow plows were a way of life. But this is a story that anyone can appreciate. It is very imaginative and the illustrations allow you to imagine life in the little town of Geopolis. and it's fun to imagine Katy pushing her way through huge piles of snow. This book may have been my first exposure to maps. I say this because i'm reading the book to my 2 year old son and know that this is his first intro to the idea of maps and urban planning :-) clever use of the page perimeter as part of the storytelling. I highly recommend it. It's my favorite from Virginia Lee Burton, who has written several other popular children's books.

Classic

Classic story in board book form. This is a good version for little hands, as it is colorful and informative. I was disappointed to find some missing text on at least 2 pages compared to the original story.

Great story, amazing illustrations.

This is a must read for parent and child. Not only is the story engaging the illustrations hold amazing detail to be explored. Get this book to share a love for reading!

A Classic Children's Story book!

Classic children's story book! My mother read it to my brother and me as kids, I read it to my kids and I just bought it (along with several other classics) for my brother's grandson for Christmas. I know he will love it - and it will bring back fond memories to my brother as well. "Chug, chug, chug!"

Katy and the Big Snow

This is another Virginia Lee Burton classic, a Caldecott Award winning author. It is a great story to read in the winter, after the holidays settle down and it's just plain cold and snowy. If you live somewhere where there is no snow, this is a good one to teach kids about the true meaning of winter when everything is blanketed with a layer of white. Again... written in a time with no political agendas or biases. It's just a fun book. When I taught first grade for twenty years, every year at the end of the year I would have the kids pick their favorite 10 books, Katy and the Big Snow and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel were always on the list.

Good book

We love all of Virginia Lee Burton’s books and this one is no exception. My boys love to follow the trail she leaves and wonder what comes next. Great for 2 and 5 YO’s.

Great book but the cover was a little dirty

Super adorable book perfect gift for our friend that snow plows and just had a daughter! This is a large board book! I did not realize it would be so big but I don’t mind the size! The cover did have some black ink smudges on it but I was able to mostly wipe them away.

I loved "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" when I was young, and now my two year old son loves "Katy and the Big Snow". It's a fun book to read, the artwork is great, and my boy enjoys picking out different parts of the city and such.

Sweet book

The was my sons fav book as a child...bought for him as an adult as a jome...loves it

Too many tiny words

Waaaaay too many tiny words. Impossible to read. I wanted to like this board book.

Wonderful condition and quick shipment

Just received my book. It came so quickly and is in pristine condition! Description stated “very good”. I had this book as a child and gave it away to my younger cousins. Just wonderful. So pleased!

Great book

Another great book for my kids collection

Good Lesson on Work Ethics

My granddaughters love big machines just the same as my grandson and the girls especially love it that a machine can be a girl. All of them love to follow Katy through town and, true to Ms. Burton's artistic style, are captivated by the numerous activities on each page. When I'm not reading these books, they sit and study the pages for themselves. Great timeless books!

Waste

Awful book. My three year old hates it. It’s difficult to read and has no coherent story for a small child.

Good book

Love this book! So sweet.

book is great but came damaged

the book is amazing but came damaged. the cover and many of the pages were folded.

son's favorite book

I gave it as a gift for my son's 41st birthday. it was one of his favorite books.

A nice hardbound edition of this classic story. Great for your bookshelf or as a baby/small child gift.

If you've never read this story, you're in for a treat! Every child should be familiar with this classic story of a snowplow that saves her town from the big snowstorm. This hardbound edition makes it a great addition to a child's bookshelf, and it would also make a great gift.

Great kids book

Grew up reading this book. Love that this big tractor, who saves the town, is a girl

Three Boys Love this Story!

I have 3 little boys I babysit for and they REQUEST each time for me to read this. They like to see how the plow moves through the city and traffic follows in its wake. They move their little fingers along the path and say the three little "Chug, Chug Chug" sounds which puff up in little clouds from Katy. An oldie but goodie!

The illustrations are so good. The book has such a classic

We purchased this book after we had purchased Maybelle the Cable Car (another by Virginia Lee Burton.) This one included stickers & had a glittery cover. The illustrations are so good. The book has such a classic, timeless feel. Loved how this book taught about how a community government works to get things done in a snow storm.

Our favorite Virginia Lee Burton Book!

We love this book, it's our absolute favorite Virginia Lee Burton book. My children always seem inspired and excited by the story of the snow plow that nothing could stop! As always, her illustrations are marvelous (and with the more modern bright colors, it's nice to let your children enjoy the black and white palette), and the story of not giving up is a great message for children. It also makes those winter days when it seems like you'll never get out a little more hopeful.

My son loves Katy!

Such a cute story about a FEMALE tractor!

woohoo KATY!!

im a preschool teacher and my children love Katy. we live in an area where it doesn't snow and i had to explain some vocabulary (snow plow, drifts, the concept of snow covering your doors and windows) but they love this book. the drawings are also pretty incredible.

Classic

This is a great book for a young grandchild.

Perfect gift

Already owned this book and bought it for my godson’s birthday. It’s one of my favorite books.

Great book for the new reader

Great book for the new reader

Five Stars

This was my favorite book as a kid. Now giving it as a baby gift instead of a card.

Old favorite

This was my husbands favorite book when he was young. We buy it for newborns.

Pass on the memories

On of my favorite books as a child and now I get to share it with my son. So awesome. It’s a great message about working hard and being generous to others all in the story of a snow plow!

Wonderful Books

These are wonderful books. My son loved them so much when he was little, that I bought these for my nephews. When they came, I had to sit down and read each one, again, myself.

Another great by Burton

Virginia Lee Burton was a gift to the world. Her writing (indeed her personality I'm sure) is warm, sincere, and hopeful. As the characters in her stories come upon hard times, they never give up hope and never lose their positive hard-working attitude. Virginia Lee Burton's characters are long-suffering and gentle, enthusiastic and generous, and in Katy and the Big Snow, we are introduced to an unforgettably doughty protagonist willing to put everything she has on the line to help friends in need. The snow plow Katy is not just a snow plow. She also lends the help of her horsepower wherever and however it is needed. She is portrayed as a bulldozer and a hauler car that helps to save the waterlogged automotive machinery. In the winter, Katy is converted to a snow plow and clears the roads. When a snow storm sweeps across Geoppolis, it is up to Katy to save the day. Katy the snow plow emerges as the last vehicle standing that might still have a chance of braving the piled-up drifts to clear the roads for emergency personnel to use. As the urgent requests for assistance mount up and begin to take their toll on Katy, the steadfast snow plow refuses to turn her back on those for whom she is the last hope of rescue. The night wears on and Katy continues to plow road after road after road. I really like this story. More importantly, my son enjoys it too. Burton does things differently than other creators of picture books, for example, in the middle of the book is a full two-page spread devoted to a coded map of Geoppolis, complete with a numbered key chart so readers can find exactly where everything is located in the small city. I also love how Virginia Lee Burton is able to convincingly ascribe traits of inner strength and courage to a snow plow. It has been seventy years since this book was first published, and it is still being published and enjoyed by children today. I'd like to think it will still be that way for my son's children. Bonus: My son loves that the book includes stickers that he loves putting on his hands or using them to decorate our fridge.

Memories came flooding back

Aside from Virginia's stories being so wonderful, the hardbound book will become a keeper for our son to pass down to his children. All of my hard bounds were lost over the years and its great that these are still published in this format. We purchased all of the stories by Virginia and hope that the remainder will become hard bound as well. There are some things in life the internet will not replace!

lovely for reading with small children

I had this when my children were small, and perhaps when I was small -it's old (first published in the late 40's) It's charm is lasting. I bought it for my grandsons (2.5 and 4.5) on a recent visit, and together with this, Mike Mulligan's Steam Engine, and The LIttle House, we read them every night by request _ they even beat out the batman comic book...my daughter tells me they are still reading them before bed...a joy

and it is perfect for little hands (not a "big little book"-style that ...

A book from my childhood, for our first grandchild (two months old now- you can't start reading too soon!) This is a "board book", and it is perfect for little hands (not a "big little book"-style that I expected)- quite a sturdy tome! 100% satisfied!!! I recommend this seller!

I love this story

I love this story. I had this book when I was a little girl, and now my little girl likes it too. It's nice for once that a FEMALE truck saves the day. It's sad that in this day and age it's still tough to find and we have to go back to an oldie but goodie. :D.

Captivating Story!

There's a reason why this book is still being published, little children LOVE it. It's lengthy but beautifully written as are all of Virginia Lee Burton's books. Young children should be exposed to great writing. The story is satisfying and exciting for young children. They want to find out "what will happen" as every page turns.

Too long.

Too long to entertain a 1 year old.

Great book

My 3 yr old son loves this book so much!!

FA1659

Nice book, kids like it.

Not happy

I signed up for the prime reading program and all the books were very cheap books even though I picked the books out not worth the money

Granddaughter Loved the Book

Liya, my granddaughter, was so surprised when she received this book that I remembered her talking about and wanting. What a pleasant experience for her and wonderful feeling for me. She was so excited when it arrived that she had the whole family sit and listen as she read it for the first time.

Unabridged

I love that this board book is unabridged ♥️

Years ago my daughter used to bring this book home from the school library every week. She loved it. She is expecting her first child so I bought this for her to read the baby. She was thrilled. The book is beautiful and I love that it is a board book so the pages will not tear.

A classic that I will always love

This is a book that my parents read to me as a child and I have in term purchased multiple times as gifts for friends who now have young children. It is a classic story in line with Virginia Lee Burton's other works. The illustrations are classic as well as the underlying messaging. I will always own a copy of this story.

Read to the little ones

Another one of my favorite children's books. Read this to your kids, particularly to your girls. The artwork is classic.

Large, quality boardbook. Very cute story.

This lapbook is HUGE. Nice boardbook pages. It’s a gift for my two year old son who LOVES books. I can hardly wait to give it to him. It’s a really cute story too.

Very Detailed !

A Keeper. My son pored over the details of each page as a reading child, now an indestructible version for pre readers.

Poor Electronic Version

The Kindle edition is terrible. Why they did it the way they did makes reading the book stupid. I’m disappointed that I spent the money on this version.

Awesome children’s book!

I love this story, and the illustrations are great!

Still wonderful

I saw a program about Virginia Lee Burton on PBS and had get all her available books on kindle. The story is still compelling and I still love to look at the big picture that shows everywhere Katy cleared away the snow. Highly recommended.

Three Stars

Good book, but not the caliber of story as her other "Mike Mulligan & Mary Anne"

Amazing book

It’s my 2 year old favorite book. Really well written and designed.

Great book for a child

My son loved this book as a toddler. We bought it as a present for another friends child and he loves it just as much as my son did.

Great book for kids and parents too!

Parents, this is a great book (one of three from the author I would highly recommend)! Had this book as a child and believe it or not, even though I have 3 grandchildren, I bought it for me! Get it, read it, enjoy it. Simply one of the best childhood books ever!

Husband loves it!

Bought this as a gift for my husband to read wit our new baby. He had it as as kid and loved it. He was very excited to have his own copy to share with his kid.

Katy saves the day for the town! Delightful.

Katy and the Big Snow has the highest regard, just as does Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. Virginia Lee Burton's books are never outdated, and are worthy additions to every child's library.

Fun book for boys

I bought this book to replace one that went Missing because it has become my 4 year old grandson's favorite book. Yet even as a child, I loved Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House, and this is similarly fun for kids, especially boys.

Our kids love this book

Our kids love this book! Every time it snows, they have to go to the window and look for "Katy" to go past. We originally checked the book out from the library, but knew we had to add it to our collection. We have a 2 year old son and a 4 year daughter. I'm sure we'll be reading this one for years to come.

Five Stars

My son is almost 4 and loves this book. There is so much detail in the illustration.

Katy and the big snow

This a good book--especially if your child loves trucks and construction equipment as mine does. We first ordered the classic Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel and then got this book because of it's similarities. Its old-school illustrations are a nice change of pace from some of the newer books we read to our son.

Beautiful

We love this story and the gorgeous illustrations. Great book for winter.

A favorite in our house! The page with the full map of the town is mesmerizing to my son.

Wonderfully easy to understand story and pictures

Wonderful story. Love how the map of the city is laid out and how Katy plows out the city in a manner completely consistent with the map. My son loves this story. Loves pointing out all the landmarks on the map. Haven't found a bad Burton book. FANTASTIC book and read.

female leader

A female protagonists who is strong, selfless, disciplined, loyal and hardworking. Wonderful role model!

I don't worry about whether we will like a Burton book - it's a given

Virginia Lee Burton was a master storyteller and illustrator. Katy is another hit with my small children. It's well done enough, I think they will discover fun nuances as they get older.

Excellent condition.

Girls can be tough and important too!

Like that it's a female lead character that saves the town. Great book.

Cute book

Kind of too old for a 2 year old but still a cute story

Enjoyable story teaches good values

My 3-year-old daughter likes the story of Katy, which we read before bed, and I like that it's a story where the underlying assumption is that hard work helping people makes you happy. The illustrations are creative, and clearly a lot of effort went into planning out the town, with lots of nice little touches in the details.

old fashioned pictures are hard to see

My 3 yr old loves this book. We are big fans of Burton and this is one of her best. It also comes with stickers.

It is a great read for all children

My mother would read me this book as a child so I bought for my daughters. It is a great read for all children, but I especially love that the big strong tractor that plows everyone out during a blizzard is a girl. It is a strong protagonist for my daughters to relate to.

A favorite of mine from childhood

A favorite of mine from childhood, now that my friends are having children this is a go to gift from me and they all love it! The big cardboard pages are perfect for heavy use!

Another grandson favorite. For kids who like equipment

Classic book. Another grandson favorite. For kids who like equipment, Katy's heroics are a big hit.

Favorites of winter

Absolute must for any child's book collection. My grandson loves this story. We used to take it out of the library every winter several times when I was a kid.

A favorite

One of my all-time favorite stories as a kid, and I've been sharing it and "The Little House" with friends for years when I've needed a baby gift.

lovely story and art marred by cheap gimmicks and sloppy printing

I bought this to replace the falling-apart copy from my own childhood. It's the same beautiful story and magical artwork from the original, which I love. However, the cover is not as it appears in the product image: it is marred by an ad promising stickers inside. Also, the cover has a sandpaper-like texture made of white and colored glitter. Inside, many of the pages have artwork that should extend to near the edge of the pages, but due apparently to sloppy layout or printing, the artwork is actually cut off. At the back is a page of stickers, not mentioned anywhere in the amazon review or product description. Consequently, your book will probably (if your child has the common propensity to match up similar things) soon be covered in stickers, which in the long run reduces its beauty and attractiveness to children and adults. If you can afford it, I recommend not buying this version. Instead, try to get a good condition used copy.

great book.

Classic, great book.

Wonderful book

A Classic

If you didn't grow up reading Katy, you missed out on a great book. She stands up to the test of time, still enchanting children all these years later.

Classic and wonderful

Our baby grandson loves this book. We also have Mike Mulligan and His Steamshovel and our grandson knows both stories well. :)

Great children's book.

Katy and the Big Snow is such a great classic. Doesn't matter what the season this is a great book to read to your kids.

We love that there are stories surrounding "the story" in the very detailed drawings and illustrations in the margins.

Above and Beyond

I ordered this book with expedited shipping so that I could take it on my trip to visit my grandson who loved the book when we got it out of the library. Michael not only gave me the promptest service ever, but he refunded $2.00 of the extra shipping cost since the book was so light, it could go first class rather than priority mail. That is above and beyond, and the book was in perfect condition as advertised.

GREAT

LOVELY STORY.....BUT DON'T BUY E-book....story needs the pictures to be fully enjoyed. Simple but relevant....I'm going to buy the collection.

A classic!

An absolute must have book.

cute book, kids like looking at pictures of the town as they grow older

I grew up with this book and I've now made it my default baby gift...

BIG board book

This board book is very thick (many pages). It is too big for my 1-year old to handle but it is a lovely story.

still a great childrens book

bought it to replace a worn out copy of the book

This book is an all time favorite! It's a great addition to my listening center for my classroom! I recommend it for any age! ;-)

This was a favorite when my children were growing up

Again fast delivery for a Grandma Baby shower gift. This was a favorite when my children were growing up.

Katy and the Big Snow

My son LOVED this book as a child and wanted his cousin to have a copy of it as she is about to have a child of her own.

Great book

I loved this book as a child and now it still makes me smile to read it. :)

Great book!

Especially for kids that love machinery. I love this style of book and our kids enjoy reading it. A regularly asked for book at bedtime.

A classic children's book

One of my son's favorites. We also own the board book edition of Mike Mulligan and the steam shovel. You can't go wrong.

If your boys are into vehicles, they'll like this book.

Another winner from VLB!

Children’s book

Love this suthor

Super for early readers!

I gave a copy each to three of my grandkids in first and kindergarten. Each was enthralled by the story, fell in love with Katy, and were successfully challenged to read the book.

cute

love that the "hero" of this book is actually a "heroine!" - good example for my kids - timeless too

Such a great book! We've always loved Mike Mulligan and Maryann and this is along the same lines. So much detail for a little guy, my two (18m and 3yrs) boys love it for different reasons. Katy saves the day, being a heavy duty snowplow and helps people all around town help others. So cute! Love the large lap book as well, makes the "excitement" of book reading a little less stressful. One my 18m boy can have at his level and I'm not worried about him tearing pages.

Great classic!

I love this children's story. The 5_year-old I care for loves this book too. "She's really good at plowing snow." The maps and illustrations are great. What fun to read.

Cute story! My 4 & 5 year old loved it! Some of the pages were kind of awkward on the Kindle version but nothing that was unbearable.

Katy and the Big Snow is great!!!

My sons, who are now in their 30s, really enjoyed all of Virginia Lee Burton's books when they were younger. This book is for my grandson who is 3 years old. It's great that her books are in print again!!!

Five Stars

My two-year-old already loved Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, and now he loves this one too.

Wonderful classic that stands the test of time

Kids love this classic, great book about working hard! A childhood favorite I've passed on to my children.

One of the best Childrens' books ever!

I loved this book in 1972 and my kids love it now. Heavy equipment, snowfall, and a great story. What's not to like?

Really good book!

great read for a toddler

the author who is also the illustrator has written many books all great for toddlers and young adults. this particular story wears well as the pictures paint the story while the book is being read. a must for real young libraries.

Perserverance

Wonderful childrens book, enjoyable machinery come to life displaying a snow truck as a child. Lovely illustrations although remincent of the 50's.

Great book

My Son loves this book almost as much as he loves his Mike Mulligan book. Great buy for someone who's children love trucks and reading.

Great story, Poorly adapted to Kindle for Android.

I loved this book as a kid, and it still stands the test of time. Unfortunately, it was poorly adapted to Kindle. Instead of letting the wonderful illustrations fill the screen, they are rendered at a smaller scale, with the illustration's text recreated below as Kindle text. This is particularly bad reading it in landscape mode.

a great classic!

My husband loved this book as a child and we bought if for our 2 year old. He loves it as well - it's a great story!

Five Stars

No issues. Thanks.

Great

My son adores the book and we read it over and over. I grew up loving this book and I'm thrilled he loves it too.

Great book in wonderful shape

Christmas present

I Bought this classic book with the CD to share with my 18 month grandson for his christmas present. I cannot wait to read and listen to Katy with him!

katy and the big snow

I would have liked to have known that this would have been ideal for a baby, with the thick cardboard pages as opposed to what I thought I was ordering was the regular children's book with regular paper pages. My grandson is too old for the cardboard baby book.

Very disappointed!!!

This book was my 1st Kindle ebook purchase after many successful purchases at Barnes & Noble. I have the kindle app for my iPad. I am completely disappointed! The graphics are terrible! If I had wanted a poorly scanned PDF whose pages didn't line up, I could have saved myself the $$ and foraged at the local used bookstore and probably found a better quality product. I am very hesitant to purchase any other children's books for fear of the same result.

Book seemed used and was purchased new

Back of book had black scuff marks and sticky on it. Book was dented and scraped as well. Not impressed for buying new.

great book for children

just enough text for the littlest listener!

Wonderful reading experience for the youngest of children, from an author whose work are classics! The board book is easy to handle, colors are vibrant and story incorporates familiar objects and experiences.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

Readers familiar with Virginia Lee Burton will know her penchant for bringing inanimate objects to life. This is a wonderful addition to those books, perfect for young children between the ages of 2 and 6. This story was a favorite in my household when I was a child, much to the dismay of my mother who wished we would select anything else for a change! (She got sick of reading it more than once a week) ^_^ The star of this book, in case anyone hasn't guessed, is a tractor named Katy who is a bulldozer in the summer and a snowplow in the winter in the city of Geopolis. Geopolis could be any small city. When a huge blizzard leaves several feet of snow behind, it is up to Katy to save the day, getting everyone where they need to go in Geopolis. As the only vehicle that hasn't been stopped by the snow, Katy must prove her toughness and sense of duty by spending the whole day clearing the streets, earning a satisfying and well-needed rest at the end of the story. That's really the whole story. Sound a bit uneventful? Well, yes. There's never a doubt that Katy will succeed in her task. There isn't a great deal of interaction with human characters besides getting them where they are going. So for a child who wants a complex plot more along the lines of MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL, they may be disappointed. But, as I said, this book was a favorite in my house, and there were several reasons why. Repetition: stories for younger children with regularly repeated phrases like this one are worthwhile to the listener, if not always the reader. Throughout the book the main line-`"Follow me," said Katy'--is repeated every time Katy happens across more citizens in need. Children will soon be providing that line on their own in the course of the story. Maps: This was my first real introduction to maps, and it's a great tool for enabling your child to understand how maps work as they follow Katy's route through Geopolis. They can trace her path on the page, and find the places she's headed to or hasn't plowed out yet. You can begin to discuss concepts of North, South, East and West with them, and maybe even break out maps of your own city or town for their perusal and comparison. The pictures are simply drawn with lovely borders, and their young audience easily understands them. Snow: It's a great introduction to what can happen during a snowstorm and the kind of trucks needed to clear the way. It's a crisis without ever being a scary crisis for kids and still addresses the problems of a blizzard-getting a patient to the hospitals, getting the firemen to a fire, getting the kids to school. For the most part, I don't recommend this book for older children. Even five and six year-olds might have outgrown this, unless they're reading the book on their own. But it's a great book to read to younger children, especially if you live in a snowy clime! If this is your first experience with this author, I highly recommend you check out MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL and THE LITTLE HOUSE. Happy Reading! Shanshad ^_^

Great Book

Katie the public snow plow saves the town! A classic picture book that teaches kids about local government services during a blizzard. Very entertaining and well.told. My one complaint is that the formatting for the ebook is terrible. One cannot look at the illustrations and the words.

Katy Will Not Stop!

Katy is a municipal snow plow serving a small village who is hit by a massive snow storm. Adults who think it silly that machines are made to behave like people in picture books should remember the little engine that could. Katy has no doubt that she can tackle any snow, and when a massive snow storm hits, she is called to duty. The firemen, the police, the doctors, the postmaster, and others all cry out for help from Katy. When Katy began to tire, she pressed on - she wouldn't stop. She is the heroine who saves the village. What makes this book more than interesting is that the author is also the illustrator, which means that there is thought behind these illustrations that they should intertwine with the dramatic plot of the text. Each illustration shows the trails plowed through the snow by Katy. With each progressive illustration, the trails become more numerous and complex to where they begin to look like maps. These illustrations partner nicley with the text to produce an emerging cadence in the dialogue.

3 1/2 year old son loves it

I was worried this would be too boring when I read through it, but my son liked it enough to ask for it again the next night, and it quickly became one of his favorites. He has never seen snow or a snow plow but now understands exactly what is happening in the story and has parts of it memorized. He loves matching the buildings in the snow covered city to the ones on the original map earlier in the book. it is fun for me to see how his brain is going a million miles an hour trying to figure out everything that is going on.

A classic I remembered as soon as I saw it!

When I saw this book...I just had to get it to read it to my grands. I immediately remembered loving it myself as a child. I hope to impart my love of reading to the kids. I was never without a book if it was raining or cold. Great classic book!!

A Children's Book Classic

This is one of Virginia Burton's best books. The story is simple and straightforward, but what really makes the book stand out are the illustrations. Readers can find many visual treats throughout the book. The town is symmetrical, there is a map with a simple key, and there are lots of little illustrations in the margins that are fun to explore. Katy is the biggest strongest crawler tractor around. When the town is in trouble, they know they can count on Katy. This is a great book to read on a snowy day. "Mike Mulligan" and "The Little House" are a couple other titles by the same author worth checking out. Beware the Houghton Mifflin soft cover binding because it tends to fall apart. Stick with the hard cover.

A perfect companion to Mike Mulligan with bold twist

What do you give a modern boy or girl to read that breaks the stereotype that machines are masculine and princesses and kittens are feminine? Katy and the Big Snow is the answer to your Christmas, holiday, and general book-purchasing needs! In the tradition of Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel, Katy is a non-anthropomorphic but named bulldozer who harnesses her amazing strength to save the town of Geoppolis from a terrible blizzard. When the truck-mounted snow plows try but fail, Katy is taken out of storage and leads the town out of imminent peril. This is Virginia Lee Burton at her absolute best, and I can only guess that she didn't receive a Caldecott when Katy was published in 1943 because Little House had just won it the year before. Tiny, detailed drawings dominate the page and reward the careful reader who takes the time to examine each one. Residents of a burning house toss tiny furniture from their windows. Skiiers tumble down hills. An almost taxonomic study of portable generators, steam shovels, dumptrucks, and all their kin ring the border of a page. Illustrations that are afterthoughts in this book would be the highlight of any other. The best of all is a two-page spread with a small drawing of Katy in the upper corner and otherwise bare pages: this is Katy plowing through untouched, blanketing snow. It's a brave illustration and bold even now. The entire book evokes feelings of both heroism, bravery, and coziness. It's the perfect book for anyone who enjoys snuggling up in a snowstorm, and the perfect medicine for little boys who refuse to read about anything but trucks and other little boys. Katy is a feminist before her time and a necessary companion to any purchase of Mike Mulligan.

Great timeless story

Enjoyed this book as a child now I am enjoying it with my children! So happy this book is still in print!

Beware: Not the Original or Complete story

Not the original, complete story. My son was given the board book editions of both "Katy and the Big Snow" and "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel" as gifts because I had requested them. We had checked them out at the library several times and he loved them. However, several pages in each are missing. It is very disappointing. It doesn't seem to make that big of a difference to my toddler, but it drives me crazy. If you have never read the books before or if you have a kid who loves construction equipment and just want a sturdier version of the book, they are fine. But if you are looking for the original, you may want to just go to the book store and make sure you know what you are getting.

Hooray For Katy!

Katy is a book that we read to the last page flip it over and simply start again. Our 3 year old nephew adores Katy. His obsession with heavy equipment and diggers made Katy the perfect addition to our library. The illustrations are fantastic and the story is charming. We love to look at the pictures and it feels like we notice something new each time we read this classic book. Katy gave us the opportunity to discuss not only how a city works and how snow is cleared, but also what "direction" is and why it's important.

what a super boring book

ugh. what a super boring book. the pictures are small and boring. they talk about the Telephone Company, Electric Company and the Highway Dept, etc. it came highly recommended by my mother in law so i didn't pay much attention to the content when i purchased it. soooo boring and LONG.

Not Burton's Best - a review of "Katy and the Big Snow"

I have to agree with the other 3-Star Reviewer. This is not one of Burton's best books. My children (boy and girl; almost 4 and 6) didn't care much for it. There is none of the usual clamoring for another read. And as the other Reviewer noted, there is a lack of 'personification' for Katy. Her character just doesn't seem as rich as some of Ms. Burton's other equipment (or buildings-lol). And plowing, followed by more plowing, is just not all that interesting even if it is helping a doctor and a mailman. Three Stars. If you already have Ms. Burton's other books and like them, take a chance on this book. But if you are looking for a Burton-first story, try another like "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" or even "The Little House."

a story for generations ...

As a little girl this was my favorite book. My parents read it to me over and over. My mom saved it all these years and recently first read it to my 3 1/2 yr old nephew. He now shares my love of this story and asks Grandpa to read it to him all the time. The story is very well written and illustrations are wonderful for little kids to follow along with.
