The best John Wayne book--EVER! This is a PHOTO book! It contains pics of the Duke that very, very few have ever seen. The reason: they are photos of him in a family setting. They are personal and have just been released by the Wayne estate. They are fabulous! I couldn't put the book down. When it arrived, I started thumbing thru it to get a better idea of what I had just purchased. I couldn't put it down for hours! There are sentiments written by Ronald Reagan, Maureen O'Hara, Martin Scorcese, and others. If you have followed and loved the Duke from his early years when you were a kid (as I have) thru all his ups & downs, you will luv this book. I am now 75 and I cannot remember any time in my life when the Duke wasn't a part of it until he died. In fact, he is still a part of it because I own ALL of his movies and watch them frequently. I am proud that he played football at my Alma Mater. Going thru this book and viewing all the great photos helped me understand who this man really was.

I must have paged through this book over a half a dozen times already and still keep going back to go through it again and again. The family has done their father proud to publish photos from his childhood all through his film career including candid shots with his family, friends and fellow actors/actresses. Photographs from all around the globe this book will be in the hearts and minds of Duke's fans for years to come. Every John Wayne fan should have at least one copy of this book. I bought two just because I knew I would eventually wear the first one out reading through it and showing it to other fans. Well worth the money and then some. In part because of continued fan interest, and I suspect, in part becuase somebody thinks it's time to release before this icon fades from the collective memory. Regardless of motivation, this is one fine volume and should appeal to anyone who was a fan of the big guy and I must confess to being amoung that crowd. Great pictures organized on a coherent fashion. A nice visual history of an actor the caught the imagination of several generations of the movie going public. No, there are none out there that can match the power of the Duke. He came along in a time when there were limited avenues of entertainment and he filled one of them, movies, to the brim. Long live the Duke.

Not quite done with the book yet but it is awesome. Of course, since I was a kid, John Wayne has always been my favorite actor and still is today. So far there is only one page in there that was a problem and it is page 115 where Pilar talks about John and it says continued on page 76 and there is no continuation. It doesn't take anything away from the book as far as I'm concerned it's still worth the money I paid for it. Love it.

I bought this for my Dad as a gift and he absolutely loves it. It is a beautiful book that should be left out and displayed.

I gave this to my 3 year old nephew as a birthday gift (he LOVES The Duke!); he and his brothers and sister really enjoy looking at all the pictures and reading the captions. The adults have enjoyed it too! There are a lot of family pictures that give fans a special look into John Wayne's life. Wonderful book!

All I can say is anything about the Duke is great. Even when someone writes something that they classify as bad it is still great. I have tried to pattern myself after the Duke and my Dad. If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything. I don't know if he said it but if he didn't he should have.

Bought this for my father-n-law for christmas. I loved it so much that I did not want to give it away. If you are a fan of John Wayne, then you must buy this book. It has everything from personal letters and never before see pictures. I ended up buying me a copy later on..

Whilst I have yet to fully read this publication, my initial reaction was one of pleasure at receiving such a superb publication. It more than measures up to past publications about its subject but includes such personal photographs of the type I have not seen before. For anyone even partially interested in John Wayne's life and career, this is a must especially in its hard cover format

I got this for my dad for Christmas. I was surprised how big the book was; yeah, I read the dimensions beforehand, but I was going to get it regardless of how big or small it was since my dad has a life-long obsession with John Wayne. My dad loved the book and wouldn't stop talking about it for a few days after Christmas. It's mostly pictures, but that was expected, so it was super cool to look through.

The book came quickly in new condition. I bought as a gift have not checked it out, but my brother in law loves everything concerning John Wayne.

I met John Wayne under most unusual circumstances in early 1963, at the movie Premier of "McLintock" in LA. I was 22. I have 12 books about "The Duke", John Wayne. This is one of the best with not only his films and his personal life, but his Conservative Republican politics and most of all, John Wayne's unparallelled Patriotism and his great love for America. What most people don't know is, The Duke did not serve in WWII. However, there is a true story why he didn't. In his days as a football player at USC, John Wayne suffered an injury. It wasn't severe enough to keep him from military duty. The Duke tried to join the US Marines, but John Ford, his boss said "NO". Ten months later, again, he tried. It was not to be. Hearing of Wayne's efforts, the US Marine Corps, Commandant and Public Service Liaison at the time, US Marine General Alexander Vandergrift, convinced Wayne and Ford that he, Wayne, would better serve his country as a model patriot and film star, to uplift the 'troops' in time of war. This is why John Wayne appeared in so many "war films' during and after WWII. It worked! Every member of the military knew John Wayne and his love for America. They had the encouragement to persevere at their duties. No, John Wayne didn't serve in the Military, he served America.

The book is well done with many never before seen photos although I wonder why, after childhood, there were never any photos of Wayne with his brother. There is one incident that I have read so much about in the John Wayne books and it had to be photographed but yet that photograph is not in this collection. After Wayne won his Oscar for True Grit, when he returned to the location where he was filming, everyone, including the horses, had eye patches on. I sure would have liked to have seen that photo. There is an error in the caption on page 198-199 in the photo from The Sons of Katie Elder as the names for Michael Anderson Jr. and Earl Holliman are mismatched as Holliman is pictured on the far right. There are tribute articles from Maureen O'Hara, Ronald Reagan, and Ron Howard, as well as a brief biographical introduction by Patricia Bosworth and a forward by Martin Scorsese. A must for any fan of the Duke!

This is a large, very nice book of photographs of the Duke, given and authorized by the Wayne family. There is also a short biography of the Duke by Patricia Bosworth and remembrances by Martin Scorcese, Ron Howard, Maureen O'Hara and the great Ronald Reagan, published originally at the time of Wayne's death. There are numerous photographs of Wayne and his children, (he looked like a very loving father,) Wayne on his boat and Wayne on various movie sets. I particularly liked the informal photographs of Wayne and other screen legends like Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. There are numerous photographs of Wayne at various show business events with other Hollywood legends like Sinatra, Bob Hope, James Stewart, Dean Martin, Henry Fonda, Lucille Ball and others. Seeing these photographs made me remember why I used to admire the stars of Hollywood while growing up, unlike the nest of far-left America haters that Hollywood has degenerated into today. All in all, a very nice book of pictures of a show business legend, a star still loved, admired and respected 33 years after his death.

This book is a MUST for any John Wayne fan! I pre-ordered the book as soon as it was available! I have been a fan of John Wayne since I was 7 years old. I own countless John Wayne memorabilia, most of his movies, and just about every book about John Wayne. But this is the only book Authorized by the John Wayne Enterprises (although there is now a new book due out in June 2013). It is filled with never-before-seen photos of John Wayne's life. It is truly a photographic masterpiece on John Wayne. As a Professional Photographer, I LOVE photos! So this is truly a treat to have all these photos of John Wayne and his life. But there is also quite a bit of text: An Essay written by Patricia Bosworth, Foreword by Martin Scorsese, A Remembrance by Maureen O'Hara, An Interview with Ron Howard, and A Remembrance by Ronald Reagan. I enjoyed reading these texts, especially the ones by Maureen O'Hara, Ron Reagan, and Ron Howard. I can't praise this book enough! BUY IT! See for yourself!

A picture book with very little copy and text, this book is almost an overload even for the most avid John Wayne fan (which I am). Oodles and oodles of good, even great pictures, of both John Wayne the Man and John Wayne the Legend as promised, but one wishes the pictures had been arranged in a more cohesive manner. They are there, however, and it seems a times as if every picture of John Wayne ever made is included. But that's alright, that's OK, because, in the end, this is a book for John Wayne lovers. And is truly a Can't-Be-Missed book for fans of the Duke. Essays by Mareen O'Hara, Ronald Reagan and Ron Howard add depth and perspective to John Wayne, the man and the legend. If you like John Wayne, this is "must" for your collection of Duke memorbilia.

I have been a John Wayne fan since I was 13 years old. I'm 32, now, and still love watching his movies and learning more about him. This is a great book for any Wayne fan or movie buff. It's really interesting to see him away from the movie screen and out in real life. There are some great pictures of him with his kids and pictures of him as a kid; some are really touching, some will make you laugh, and some will just surprise you. There are excerpts from letters and magazine articles and quotes from John Wayne himself and from people who knew him (such as Maureen O'Hara). I do feel like some of the descriptions could have been a little more in depth at times but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm proud to have it in my collection.

This is a great coffee table book and delivers great insight to the personal side of the legend that is John Wayne. I liked it so much I am buying more as gifts for my friends and co-workers who are fans.

A beautiful book packed with rare behind the scene photographs. The book also contains short essays from Maureen O'Hara & Ron Howard which give some sense of their admiration for the Duke. This collection though feels more like a family album as it contains previously unpublished pictures and many centre around Wayne as a father and husband. I have been a fan since childhood and I guess that only a fan would purchase a book of this nature. An excellent addition to any collection of Wayne memorabilia.

As a self confessed JW fanatic I cannot view this item objectively, suffice to say that for any fan it will provide a very personal window not just to his amazing film career but to what thing he prized most, his family. It made my Christmas (I ordered it & paid for it!) and will be a very much loved addition to my collection.

My hubbies is an avid fan has watched his films so many times he could take part in any of them....drives me mad Whenever his films are shown he has to watch! Thought this book would be the ideal surprise gift. He loves it money well spent!

What a book this is its outstanding in my opinion,you really start to get the feel of his life.The best book on john wayne I have ever read,I would reccomend it to ant john wayne fan
