The family photo abums, the classic film costumes, the telgrams and medals, from the internationally-beloved icon, The Duke! All collected here for the first time.

An undisputed American icon, John Wayne is recognized the world over for his signature drawl and confident swagger; the ultimate personification of American courage and honor. This fall, John Wayne Enterprises has chosen powerHouse Books to produce the first-ever exclusively authorized photographic record of his life, both on-screen and off.

John Wayne: The Legend and the Man celebrates Duke's life and legacy through film stills and backstage photos and snapshots ranging from his cinematic masterpieces-True Grit, Rio Grande, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Quiet Man, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Fort Apache, and The Alamo-to a surprising variety of early-career, leading-man films: The Big Trail, Stagecoach, Flying Tigers, They Were Expendable. Also included are a wide selection of fan mail art; family albums, photos from friends and loved ones, and the many treasures gathered over the years in his immense archive (famed film costumes, publicity photos exchanged with costars, telegrams and medals), many of the photos and these personal effects being published for the first time, and all from Duke's personal archive.

Duke was more than just his on-screen persona-he was known by loved ones for his warmth, charm, charisma, passion, loyalty, and spirit. Through an in-depth expose of the memorabilia, the private moments, the inner thoughts, and familial memories, John Wayne: The Legend and the Man captures both the man and the myth and furthers the legacy of this giant of American cinema.

"This wonderful collection of photographs gives us John Wayne the figurehead, John Wayne the actor, and John Wayne the human being. It's a rich experience to look through these pages and see where Wayne's three roles converged and diverged.... And in all the photos, you see another,
earlier America with different ideas of glamor, beauty, fashion, and behavior, a world that now feels as distant as the renaissance.
A movie-made hero...a superstar, one of the very first...an image of manhood...and a great American artist. This book affords us a generous look at John Wayne from every angle."
-Martin Scorsese, from the Introduction

"To the people of the world, John Wayne is the United States of America. He is what they believe it to be. He is what they hope it will be. And he is what they hope it will always be."
-Maureen O'Hara

"In my acting, I have to identify with something in the character. The big tough boy on the side of right-that's me. Simple themes. Save me from the nuances. All I do is sincerity, and I've been selling the hell out of that ever since I started."
-John Wayne (Time, June 9, 1967)

Best John Wayne book--EVER!

The best John Wayne book--EVER! This is a PHOTO book! It contains pics of the Duke that very, very few have ever seen. The reason: they are photos of him in a family setting. They are personal and have just been released by the Wayne estate. They are fabulous! I couldn't put the book down. When it arrived, I started thumbing thru it to get a better idea of what I had just purchased. I couldn't put it down for hours! There are sentiments written by Ronald Reagan, Maureen O'Hara, Martin Scorcese, and others. If you have followed and loved the Duke from his early years when you were a kid (as I have) thru all his ups & downs, you will luv this book. I am now 75 and I cannot remember any time in my life when the Duke wasn't a part of it until he died. In fact, he is still a part of it because I own ALL of his movies and watch them frequently. I am proud that he played football at my Alma Mater. Going thru this book and viewing all the great photos helped me understand who this man really was.

The Best John Wayne Photography Book Ever Written

I must have paged through this book over a half a dozen times already and still keep going back to go through it again and again. The family has done their father proud to publish photos from his childhood all through his film career including candid shots with his family, friends and fellow actors/actresses. Photographs from all around the globe this book will be in the hearts and minds of Duke's fans for years to come. Every John Wayne fan should have at least one copy of this book. I bought two just because I knew I would eventually wear the first one out reading through it and showing it to other fans. Well worth the money and then some. Thanks go out to his children for sharing photos from the family archive. Happy Holidays!

A keeper.....

Seems like a lot of books related to John Wayne out recently, and more to come. In part because of continued fan interest, and I suspect, in part becuase somebody thinks it's time to release before this icon fades from the collective memory. Regardless of motivation, this is one fine volume and should appeal to anyone who was a fan of the big guy and I must confess to being amoung that crowd. Great pictures organized on a coherent fashion. A nice visual history of an actor the caught the imagination of several generations of the movie going public. No, there are none out there that can match the power of the Duke. He came along in a time when there were limited avenues of entertainment and he filled one of them, movies, to the brim. Long live the Duke.

John Wayne the Legend the Man

Not quite done with the book yet but it is awesome. Of course, since I was a kid, John Wayne has always been my favorite actor and still is today. So far there is only one page in there that was a problem and it is page 115 where Pilar talks about John and it says continued on page 76 and there is no continuation. It doesn't take anything away from the book as far as I'm concerned it's still worth the money I paid for it. Love it.

It is a beautiful book that should be left out and displayed

I bought this for my Dad as a gift and he absolutely loves it. It is a beautiful book that should be left out and displayed.

Great

Great

Lots of previously unseen pictures

This book is a delight. So many pictures of a beautiful man plus both candid and posed shots of his family, including his rarely if ever depicted first wife. I first saw this book offered for sale at the Phoenix Art Museum for $45. Luckily I walked away since it was termendously cheaper on Amazon.

Five Stars

It was excellent
