Jesus Freaks: Martyrs: Stories of Those Who Stood for Jesus: The Ultimate Jesus Freaks

My son ordered this book for a book report in sixth grade. It was quite a bit longer than he thought it was going to be (lol)! He's not an avid reader himself but likes to be read to; so, I read the book aloud with him. It's a thought provoking and challenging book for any Christian believer and a good conversation starter for you to use with your kids about their faith. It includes many stories from current times (up to mid 90's) and many stories from previous centuries - even back to Jesus' time and many martyrs from the Bible. It's not a chronological story, so it would be easy to use this book as a nightly bed time- read one or two stories before bed and discuss- book. Each story is on average two or three pages long and as far as I know, all are true events. Throughout the book there are many short scripture passages relating to a specific martyr story. I wouldn't recommend reading it with younger children unless you are comfortable with them hearing about people being burned at the stake and things like children being executed in front of their parents. Hope this helps you make your decision!

Was very disappointed to have been duped into buying a book I already had. How very marvel and DC of you. I won’t be buying any more Jesus Freak books as I just don’t know what I’ll be getting. Which is a shame as the content is spectacular. I just feel I was duped by the title into thinking this was a new release of book series I didn’t have. Probably on me for not researching more throughly but sometimes I just don’t have time to research every damn thing.

I have bought 4 copies of this book over the past week. One for myself the others for friends/family. This book is an eye-opening, enlightening, thought-provoking, shocking reality of what God's people will go through to stay true to Him. When you read these stories, I hope you look deep into yourself and figure out how true your relationship is with the Living God.

This is a must read for all Christians! How convicting and amazing! It has challenged me to be more and more open about my faith and not care about the cost!

This book opened my eyes and slaped me in the face on what it means to truly follow Christ. Most take it for granted here in America and i offten ask myself if i would be willing to die for my faith. After reading this i would be truly honored to lay my life down. Most importantly it taught me to love and pray for those that persecute and tourture me. God gave these martyrs the strength to endure the pain as if they didnt feel it and while being put to death or imprisoned they where praying hard for their tourtures that they would come to know Christ, because as soon as they passed they knew they would be with our Lord in Heaven.

This book made my problems seem small. After reading about what other Christians went through, I was more thankful. If you are a person with a depressive disorder, like myself, you'll need to take your reading in smaller increments or the readings could have the opposite effect.

Really an encouraging volume to read. But it works best if you read a half dozen or so at a time. More than that and it starts to depress, as almost everyone dies. Admittedly that is the point of martyrdom, dying heroically for Jesus. One that I read at random however, before buying the book, sold it to me. A pretty girl chickened out of going for a long prison term and sold out her fellow believers for a much reduced sentence. That was so honest, it convinced me to get it. Not everyone is a plaster statue saint. And it also showed the sort of trickery anti-Christians use.

each person wrote about in this tiny treasure encouraged me, broke my heart, and drove me to share their stories. their love for Christ and the desire to share the Good news. they give themselves totally, to the Lord, strengthened by the Holy Spirit to trust and hang on the the Father to the point of rejection by family, loved ones, mobs of angry people to the point of death to remain in Christ. thank you Toby Mac and all the others that put these stories together. i have given them to friends and will continue to pass them on. shirley

I got my book in a very timely manner and in great shape. This book is suppose to be for Christians to read and understand that many have died and are still dying for Christ. It is a great encouragement for us to do the same. What an honor.

Really enjoyed the book and so many of the historical stories of past martyrs.

3 Teens were not kept interested. All three are excellent readers. I tried & will continue to do so.

I am glad that I purchased this book. It is amazing how strong these people are in their faith. In one exerpt that I read, a persecutee had their hand/arm cut off (if I'm not mistaken it was for carrying a Bible). Instead of wailing in sorrow, the individual raised the other existing hand/arm & praised the Lord!! Awesome testimony of those who stand true to what they believe in without retaliation! Is it the gang-bangers, terrorists or persecutors who are tough? I think not!!!

Change your belief of Christians that are prosecuted. Giving up one's life to place it in the hands of God and the enemies of His, to remain strong and true to your beliefs. May I be this faithful to God when the chips are down. A must read! Dare to share the strong faith of Christians who place God above all else. Freaks? I desire to be so faithfully freakish!

This book is timely, interesting, readable, relevant and all round worth reading. I once started FOX'S BOOK OF MARTYRS, but couldn't cope. It was very graphic and gruesome. This book has short stories, modern, meaningful and thought provoking. It is an excellent presentation, and really should be read by everyone who cares about others who are undergoing persecution. It gives the reader a lot to think and pray about.

This is one of the most moving books that I have read. It’s so good I bought a copy for my 13 year old so that he can see what people have been through to get where we are today. A definite buy for friends and family also.

I think with a book like this, you can't help but compare yourself to the people in the book. It is part of the purpose of the book. I wonder about myself; whether I would have faith strong enough to die for it. Right now, I don't think I would. So it's interesting to me that all the people in this book have died or lived for there faith. Part of me wants to strive to be like them--living for my faith. Another part is confused. I think this is a interesting book for most Christians to read because we all want to strive to be more faithful in life. If you are not Christian, I am not sure it will interest you. It might but I think it is a little strong for non-Christians.

i haven't had time to read much of this book, but it already has me some of it every day, and i think that i will continue to read some of it everyday, over and over. This book will give you the courage to be a better person in Jesus and it's that what.

Probably my all-time favorite book outside the Bible. I use it for devotional reading most every night. It has removed the fear of what will happen when "politically correct" America turns completely against true believers and we finally begin to experience the "suffering" the Bible equates with knowing Christ (Philippians 3:10). Only wish it came in a less expensive format so I could buy it by the case it pass it out. Even so, I've bought dozens of used ones and given them to jail inmates, who also devour it as I have. I say this as a suggestion for others to do likewise. Become a prison/jail chaplain volunteer!

You can't just read this book. If this book, which gives account of our brothers and sisters in Christ who boldly gave up their lives for the cause of the gospel, does not call you to that same place you must take a look at your faith... Your walk... Your life. Most amazing book apart from His Word I've read.

Inspiring

A great book to read and to give as a gift

I gave this to my 16 year old daughter for Christmas and she loves it! It is full of interesting stories of real-life martyrs and is motivating to her to live a life sold out for Christ.

This is a super book! All Christians and curious people should read this. We need to appreciate the written "Word", and the people that have gone before us (sacrificing their lives), to spread the news about Christ. Reading this book will also prepare us to be "ready" when we are questioned or persecuted for our faith.

I read this about 10 years ago and it gave me real appreciation for persecution throughout history and inspiration from the stories of those who see living for Christ the simple and most important way to live despite incredible threats.

As I read the stories of people giving up their lives or enduring unspeakable torture because of their faith in Jesus, it made me ask myself over and over again, "How would I respond to that kind of treatment"? It certainly made me want to love Jesus more and to be more bold in my walk and talk so that people will view me as a "Jesus Freak". I know for certain that in the US, we have not had to face this kind of persecution for our faith, but there are no guarantees that it will remain that way and those of us who are followers of Jesus may very well be facing these kinds ordeals. The time is now to ask yourself, "Will I die for my belief or will I denie my Lord"?

I own this book, have for years, and love it. The stories are heart wrenching, but in a good way. I bought it for my dad, and he is enjoying it also.

Best book ever!

And it was humbling too, considering what those long ago had to endure and what the church in China and Muslim countries has to endure today. It is a wonderful book but not for the faint of heart. Thinking of what those martyrs had to endure for their faith makes you truly thankful that we live in a country that doesn't persecute Christians for their faith. The media and the government don't like references to Jesus and what His Word says but regardless of whether they like it or not, one day He will return. Then everyone will see! Romans 8:28

Awesome! Hard to believe some of these stories are true, just the love these martyrs have for their Savior. They are real life examples of what it means to be unashamed of the gospel. These stories make you examine your own walk and faith in Christ and makes you ask yourself, not only would you give up marterial things for Christ but are you willing to give up your life for the One who gave it up for you? "I'd rather die like Christ than live unholy"

The book is about persecuted Christians. The authors gathered several short testimonies throughout history. In the end, there are specific contents like information about the band dc Talk - Toby Mac, Michael Tait (Newsboys) and Kevin Max (Audio Adrenaline). The paperback includes some resources for prayer groups, an index, and some book references. The handbook denounces the worldwide hate crimes against Christians. The authors’ purpose is to expose the ugly truth. The authors used a plain language that is easy to understand. The testimonies are heartbreaking but very inspiring. It is very challenging to realise that in some countries, the Christians fear for their life. The book is interesting. It is accurate because it provides the dates and names of the victims. The authors explained the way the Christians were tortured and often killed. The title grabbed my attention. And the book’s cover looks like a parchment. The message is uplifting. I also grasped that the mainstream media don’t talk about the persecution of the Christians - reality check. I really enjoyed reading this book because that strengthened my faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The book respects the interpretation of the Bible. To conclude, I praise the authors for their investigations. I give 5 stars out of five for this compelling book. Bravo!

I would like to encourage everyone to read this book. Do not be afraid of it!! The reality that Christians are tortured relentlessly every moment is tragic. However, this book is anything but a tragedy. This book is an account of Christians whom radically love the Lord. It is a story of joy. Joy that is found in the hearts of Christian men and women who joyfully serve the Lord, even in the most dark of circumstances. Hope, that even the blackest of hearts will come to Christ because of Christ working through the martyrs. Hope, because, despite a martyrs circumstances, nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. I invite you to share in the joy of the martyrs. As they show the love of Jesus to their persecutors as Christ showed His love toward us. I repeat, this is not a book of tragedy - this is a book of love. P.s. I know that this book holds and account of persecution and could therefore be interpreted as being much to graphic for most people to handle. However, I would like to say that as I read this book I found myself caught up in the joy in the hearts of every martyr. And as I experienced this joy, I realized that(as I said above) this is not a book of tragedy. This is a book of love. Please comment! I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

The stories are 5 star. BEWARE THAT THIS IS A NEW TITLE TO THE SAME BOOK "Jesus Freaks VOL. TWO. " I thought it was the third in a series. The site does not indicate this is the same book. However - Amazon was awesome and quick to let me return it and they paid the shipping.

Good book. Similar to Foxe's Book of Martyrs.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I'm normally a fast reader, but this book took me a REALLY long time to finish. Why? Ummm, I guess it's because on almost every other page ... someone dies. Not just dies, but is tortured to death in most stories. Then you feel like you HAVE to stop reading, out of respect for their sacrifice, or sensitivity or maybe trauma? BUT despite the disturbing - challenging - nature of this book, everyone should read it. There are a gazillion books out there that tell you "God loves you." But how many declare that YOU can (and should) LOVE GOD?

So heart warming & heart wrenching that I cried through most of this book. Lent to my sister and she cried through it also! I have reread this several times.... A book you won't put aside very easy!

This book changed my life. I was in high school and right during Cassie Berdnard time. I am a Jesus Freak.

This a great book to read, it reminds us, here in the states that we are blessed to worship God; while others are not! It also show us how selfish we are, this book will open your eyes and heart to pray for other and their lives and make you realize that there are more important things then money and material things. Story after story of fearless believers and their boldness in face of trials and persecution will motivate and encourage the reader to reach deeper in their love and devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ. I bought this book for my daughter and she has read it cover to cover. She was interested in it after our Youth Minister read excerpts from it. I give it 5 stars, because it really makes us think as Christians today what they went through to just believe in God. It's kinda like what our children are going through today to just try to have God in schools without "offending" others. Our nation is "one under GOD!!"

I read this along time ago, and then lent it to a friend who never returned it. Probably because it was just too good! Anyways, reading this book has really challenged how I think and act, and truthfully, these martyrs' actions speak louder than words although they were equally striking. In addition, I bought this for my youth group to encourage them to become more confident in their faith.

No matter how bad off you think you might have things, it's hard to imagine that it could be as bad as some of the stories in this book. It is an inspiring book that can provide perspective on your Christian faith and how it compares to those in the book. Great book!

I love testimonies. I love listening to people I know - people I trust wont lie or mislead me - telling me about how God has worked in their lives and how God has come through for them. Testimonies build faith and hope. I was really looking forward to reading this book for that reason. I wanted to hear the testimonies of Christians in horrific situations refusing to recant or exchange their savior for the empty promises of the world. Reading about situations that I can't even imagine and how characters in the book respond was inspirational! The problem is that since this book suggests that the stories are real I was expecting authentication. When I watch religious TV (rarely) I see people who claim miracles. I hear preachers saying that their ministry healed a bazillion people this year alone! I see people jumping around on stage and the "healer" saying that they couldn't walk previously. My first thought is always, "show me the proof." If these "healers" heal so many people wouldn't there be some kind of evidence? Wouldn't there be documentation of the before and after of each of these "healed" people showing miraculous change? I'm not saying that I can't believe in miracles. What I am saying is that I want to be discerning in who I trust and what I believe. This book, unfortunately, ended up like the TV healers to me. So many of these stories were far fetched, had only first names or even no names, were about people and situations decades ago and seemed to have no way of knowing what was written was true. I remember stories that were written about a person who was in jail who had no way to communicate to those outside yet somehow the authors of this book were able to know the inner thoughts of the soon-to-be-martyred Christian. The authors also knew what the jailers said and did. How? Where is the evidence that this isn't just an inspiring work of fiction? Situations like the above example aren't the exception in this book. Unfortunately, instead of testimonies from people we can trust with information we can verify what we get from this book is simply nothing more than stories. If I am going to spend my time reading Christian fiction, I could go with Ted Dekker or Janette Oke or Francine Rivers (depending on genre preferences) and get a better story that also includes Christians in situations that give opportunity to prove out their faith. this is a good book to take with you. The stories are short, so if you are waiting somewhere, instead of getting irritated, you can spend your time reading this book. It would also be a nice gift to give to someone.

This is a great book for any believer, new or old! My kids love me reading to them about the martyrs of our faith before they go to bed. It’s great quality and wonderfully put together.

I can highly recommend this book. I read it a little every night. The real life stories of people who were martyred for their faith are compelling and thought provoking. I have come to realize that i want faith like those in the stories. Read it. It will change your prospective about what is important in life.

Having read the book every Christian should read after the Bible itself, namely Foxes Book of Martyrs I recomend this as a modern version of that book. It is not as extensive as Foxes classic but contains some amazing testimonies of steadfast believers under terrible persecution for their faith. It contains many modern day examples from around the world and is an encouraging read for teens and adults alike.

Great book , I found reading these testimonies very powerful great how the book is put together. All christians should have a copy.

The best book for children, teens and adults to learn of what Christians had to sacrifice. Stories are one page and short, but long enough to take away a message. Bought 2, one for my 10 year old son, and another to give as a gift to his friend.

I have fallen in love with the Jesus Freaks series. They are encouraging, faith building, and really put things into perspective. I love that each story is not too long either. I found, because of the length of the stories, it makes perfect bathroom reading!

Great short stories that I use for family devotions. Easy English for beginner readers and an incredible encouragement and challenge to take up the Cross and be a "Jesus Freak"
