It's Okay to Different

Thanks goes to the author for reminding me that’s it okay to different. That message will come through loud and clear to anybody who reads the book, regardless of age. At the moment in United States Children need to hear this message because they’re not getting it from the leaders of nation. Also, the book has an incredible range of subjects. In other words, I don’t think the author misses a subject that a teacher or parent can use at home or school.

Perfect Conversation Starter!!!!

My daughter is 6, she has grown up with one of her closest friends having Down syndrome. But when she made her way to public school in first grade there were difference in religion, clothing, appearances, and language that she was being faced with. And as all children do, she started to ask questions about why her new friends weren't like her old friends. So we bought this book after seeing it in a store, and she loved it!!!! As a mommy, I loved it because t blended serious differences with silly ones, that helped keep her attention. The drawings assist in keeping her attention and created a visual representation of what the book was talking about. Weeks after purchasing and reading the book, she brings it up and talks about it when we are out and about and see things that make every person different. It really helped me explain mental illnesses, religion, and other things that make people different, but not visually different. It also helped her to defend a friend at school that was getting picked on for not celebrating Halloween, she explained to the kids about all of the ways that people can be different. One proud mommy!!!! And a grateful mommy for a book that helped simplify a difficult conversation.

This is a wonderful book that every family/teacher should have in their home/classroom

This is a wonderful book that every family/teacher should have in their home/classroom. It's about diversity and inclusion. I kick off our year by reading this to my kiddos. Then we reflect on what is different about us (having a twin, wearing glasses, being small, having a weird pet, etc.). We then make our own pages about ourselves to display for the year.

Funny while teaching important lessons - Todd Parr books are for children of all ages!

You can never go wrong with a Todd Parr book! Anytime I see this author's name, I know the book will be colorful, engaging, and funny while teaching important values such as acceptance, diversity and love. Here might be Parr at his greatest -- a book that is hilarious, never preach-y, and the title sums up the biggest lesson Parr teaches in all of his work: it's okay to be different! I got this for my 15-month-old who is too young to sit and read with me (well, he'll sit with me while I read but he'll start chewing the book or turning the pages too quickly!) yet every night, when I ask him to bring me a book to read to him, he is almost guarenteed to grab one of Todd Parr's multi-colored books. I'm so very happy to have Parr's books in my young boy's library so he can grow up enjoying quality literature that imparts important lessons. It's Okay To Be Different uses metaphors children will understand to describe or allude to real life differences - it's okay to have a big nose, with an illustration of an elephant and his trunk; it's okay to be from somewhere else - like outer space! Simply put, this book is a muts for any child's collection. Whether you're starting a library for a baby-to-be or adding to a preschoolor's books, this story will be a great addition.

One of my three year old's faves!

This is a fantastic book that goes through all of the ways that you can be different. It is simple and easy to read, gives you the ability to talk through the various ways that someone can be different and has cute illustrations that are bright and enjoyable for a young reader. This not only helps a child with being okay that others are different, but also themselves. I think this is a great book to help little ones to build confidence within themselves.

Must Read

This book is so great for all children. We have been going through some big changes in our family and had a hard time finding books to help our child understand what was happening. He loves the bright colors and simple message of love and uniqueness of everyone. Plus it’s a great message to know it’s okay no matter who you are.

I love Todd Parr!

If you're looking for fun children's books that are progressive, creative, and that send positive messages, these are the books to buy! As the sole parent of a six-month-old, I have been looking for books on alternative families that I will be able to read my son when he begins to discern our family from other (two parent) families. I came across Parr's "The Mommy Book" and "The Family Book," which include a diverse array of both traditional and non-traditional families. I also purchased "It's Okay to Be Different" and "The Feelings Book," which provide simple yet fantastic ideas for conversations around healthy expressions of behavior and identity. I'm now a dedicated Todd Parr fan (you should "like" him on Facebook, if you're a user, to keep abreast of his activities and updates. He resides in the Bay Area and occasionally holds readings out there).

Fun to read, sweet message.

This book is so much fun to read with my young sons - they love the colorful illustrations. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I got the paperback copy instead of hard cover and I'd much rather have a sturdier book than the paperback is.

Favorite Book!

I love this book, so I am gifting it to a new mom to be. Its got a great lesson that can be used for many years. I used to bring this book to elementary school when asked to be the parent reader and I would act it out with props from the book.

great info and illustration

This is excellent for children. The pages are appropriately colorful and repetitive. Representation of lots of "different" situations. My kid asks us to read this an annoying number of times each week which is my measure of child "likability"

Great book for kids!

My almost 4 year old just LOVES this book. It teaches kids that is OK to be different and to have different families and it's colorful and fun to read. Would HIGHLY recommend!

Wonderful book to explain respect to children

I am a girl scout leader for a group of Kindergarten girls. I needed a book to help teach them about respecting themselves and others. I searched in the library and found this one, which was perfect. The children could relate to the content, and they loved the pictures. There were also some funny lines as well as serious ones to keep them interested and entertained. I loved the last page, which said that it is ok to be different because they are all special. Despite of their hilarious 5 year old comments (one page explaining that there are different moms and dads elicited a comment about how dads are weird and mommies are fancy), I think they are starting the grasp the concept that people have their own issues, ideas and preferences, and that is ok. The only reason I gave it 4 starts is because it is a little too long for this age group.

Teaches acceptance and love for yourself and others!

I teach a 3-4 preschool class and love the lessons and messages that Todd Parr shares in all his books. The children love the images and the stories are easy to use when creating lessons plans. I recommend any of his books!!

Great Book for Inclusion!

I love this book! I teach at a daycare facility and we need books that talk about inclusion. This book does it in such a simple, yet fun way! The children always enjoy reading it It is a colorful book that has a variety of differences from "It's Okay to Have Wheels" to "It's Okay to Have no Hair". I recommend this book to anyone who needs a simple but creative way to show that it really is okay to be different! The book is great quality with bright colors!

I really like Todd Parr's books for my youngest

I really like Todd Parr's books for my youngest, but this particular one is not a favorite. He loves the bright colors and drawings but does not seem to be drawn to the subject matter as much as some of the others. We like the feelings book and the its ok to make mistakes book better then this one. That being said, Todd Parr books have been a staple on our book shelves for all of our kids when they were young.

Poor Quality for the Price

I purchased this book for my 3 year old son. I try to always buy used because he is very hard on them. The book i received was in terrible condition. Pages were ripped completely in half and taped together, sections had been pulled loose from the spine and it had an overall dingy look to it. This is a 2 or 3 dollar book. My son loves it, so I will keep it, however it is below my reasonable bar for acceptance.

Great book to use when teaching children how to respect ...

Great book to use when teaching children how to respect others and understand that not everyone is the same. I work with 4-5yr olds and as they listened all of them found something in the book to relate to. Which lead to a discussion afterwards about how "people can be the same but still not the same" (their words). After reading this story I noticed the children respecting each other more.

LOVE this book

LOVE LOVE LOVE Todd Parr books, but this one is SO good!! Definitely a must to help our kiddos understand that we are all made differently, and that is a beautiful thing.

Perfect for Getting the Younger Set Thinking

Todd Parr has an amazing way of simplifying a concept but with incredible depth. This book in particular is helpful in talking about the differences we all have and how that's not a big, horrible scary thing. The images are simple, but convey the idea perfectly. Mr. Parr has an uncanny ability to communicate ideas, thoughts and social issue in a clever, thoughtful way that takes his books up a considerable notch from the bulk of children's books. The page with the words, "It's okay to say no to bad things," with a fish hook and two fish pondering it is an example of how perfect he captures many of the feelings, issues and situations that confront children and adults alike. All of Mr. Parr's books are truly special.

They loved it and I did (and do) too

Used to read this book to my daughters all the time. They loved it and I did (and do) too. It's quirky, for sure. But it encourages acceptance of difference in a way that, years later now, I think made a difference.

Love this book

Such a great book about all the ways that we are different. So many different examples of beautiful differences and so easily explained. Great as an intro for littles.

Great book

My 12 month old daughter LOVES this book. All of the bright colors and big animated pictures are very appealing to her. We bought this book to add to her collection so she knows from an early age that everyone is different and it's okay. She was born with a rare bone marrow failure disorder which caused her to be born without a thumb on her left hand. She will be spending a lot of time in the hospital; especially leading up to her transplant. It is very important to us that she is happy, and views herself positively, and loves herself just as she is; like we do. This book does a good job of teaching that we are all different and it's okay.

LOVE his books

I LOVE these books! My 4 year old loves them too. They are great for teaching little ones lessons about differences, acceptance, kindness, etc. I have bought 8 of his books and we love all of them. They have some great funny parts that crack my 4 year old up.

Differences are Okay!

Not only do I love the bright, colorful, cartoonish illustrations, but I appreciate how easy this book is to relate to. All of us feel different in one way or another, sometimes in good ways, sometimes in not so good ways. Parr does a nice job pointing out that most differences are okay, that these differences don't need to be hidden or run away from. He refers to things that children experience on a regular basis, things such as size differences, feelings, likes and dislikes, appearance, etc. I enjoyed using this book and I hope it helped the children to realize that being different is okay.

A classic

My children loved Todd Parr's books and now I always give one at baby showers. Simple, loving messages that children respond to.

Great, Inclusive Story Open to many Interpretations.

This book shows young children that it is okay to be "different" in many ways. There are colorful, interesting pages with examples of people with different color hair, someone in a wheel chair, and my favorite--different types of families. This is especially important for children who come from non-traditional households like single parent households, same-sex households, or whom are adopted. There is a page on being adopted but you can basically add any story to that page if adoption does not apply. The words are simple and because the pictures are open to interpretation you can add your own story to them. Whatever you need to explain--for instance a disability in addition to the wheel chair, or a non-traditional family arrangement on the pages with two "moms" and two "dads" that can easily be interpreted as gay parents or a birth mom and an everyday (or adoptive) mom. Or, any two caregivers if a child comes from a family with no mom and no dad (for instance grandparent and aunt or uncle). I really like this book because for small children it is often difficult to understand these kinds of differences and this book makes is okay to talk about them and opens up space to discuss them in ways appropriate to the child's age. It also gives them the ability to start piecing together their own story to share with classmates, because these things inevitable come up in school. I first ran across this book in a preschool class. The teacher used it to discuss descriptions (like hair color, clothing, etc.) because of the colorful pictures but also to make the point of the book and it is a great resource for both academic learning and social learning. I'm very happy with it and it keeps my 4 year old's attention and sparks more conversations, which let me in on how he understands his relationships with other people.

A great start to teach your child diversity!

We got this book from the library and our three year old daughter loved it so much that we had to buy our own copy. It helps lead into questions about people that she sees who are different. It helps her to not be afraid of someone who looks different from her and to know that we are all just people.

Worth it

I have a mixed child bought it for that reason she loves it asked me over and over to read .

... my friend raved about it and how her son LOVED IT it was his favorite book

I bought this book bc my friend raved about it and how her son LOVED IT it was his favorite book. My son didn't have the same vibe. Granted he did love the silly pictures and colorful pictures but thats it. We spent more time talking about the pictures than the lesson of the book.

Not ok

Some of the statements like “it is ok to eat Mac and cheese in the bath tub” and a couple more, not agree with

Exactly what I expected

Cute book! Bought it as a gift for a baby shower, but I will need to buy another copy for my own daughter. It can apply to all ages. It arrived in perfect condition.

Great basic premise-parents do the rest with your own messages

This is a great book for kids... each page is "it's okay to..." with any number of issues listed (have a big nose, lose something, be mad, etc.) I like that the rest of the message is up to the parent to insert. It helps you raise the issues, and then you can talk to you own child about how to handle that difference, since the author doesn't manufacture that message for you. For fun, I'd love to see the author do a book with suggested ways to respond to others who point our your differences... just to have something to work from. But as it stands, you can shape this book just about anyu way you want to.

Excellent book for small children in being different.

It's OK to be Different is one of a series of books for small children by Todd Parr. All of these books are about important topics and are colorful and appealing to children. Parents and pre-school teachers will especially find them valuable. In a world where many people find that it is not OK to be different this book sends an important message that even adults should heed.

Different IS OK

Even my grandson's Head Start tutor thought this was an amazing book. It identifies multiple things that can make an individual different, It's written so young children can relate.

Beautiful

The book is beautiful, but I had to ask for a replacement because it came destroyed the first time.

great product

A++ came as described and arrived on time.

Children DO deal with these issues

I am a Lutheran Church librarian in Florida who bought this book for our church library. I think the work of every child is to figure out where he/she fits in the world. Why are some people this way and others that way? Is one way right and one way wrong? As we grow older we realize that there is right and wrong and also many shades of grey. We call this ethics. That is not really what this book is about. This book is about differences that children perceive and wonder about: differences in appearance--tall, short, chubby, thin, physical challenges, racial differences, and silly little things like freckles or hair color or wearing braces or glasses. I think Parr's heart is definitely in the right place. He tries to send to our kids a message of acceptance of these sorts of superficial differences but which kids (and adults) often blow way out of proportion. He's trying to at least let all kids begin life on an even playing field. Instead of seeing such traits and characteristics as detriments this book recommends that we just consider them unique traits and no big deal. This is a good message. Most of the reviewers who dislike this book take it as a comment on ethics when I do not think that is really what it is meant to comment on. We all know that there are things that are right (telling the truth, being good peaceful neighbors, etc.) and things that are definitely wrong (lying, taking a weapon to school, child abuse, etc.) But this book is not about that. It is on a much, much simpler level. Since most children learn bigotry and prejudice by the age of THREE (!) it is imperative that we "bigot-proof" them very early in their lives, preferably before they begin school. This is a book meant for early childhood, when children become more aware of differences and wonder about them. Just take it at that level. And if you do not like to eat macaroni in the bathtub, then for heaven's sake, discuss it with your child!!! That is what books are for--to promote dialogue and thought. If eating macaroni in the bathtub is the oddest thing your kid ever does in life, you do not have a very curious or flexible child! As a former art teacher, I like the bold colors and drawings--very nice. I think most kids who read this book come away with a rather happy attitude about the message. Most would probably think it whimsical with a hint of truth.

An Empty package showed up

1. The Item was not "handed" to the resident, it was on the doorstep. 2. the package was empty.

Convincing

Liked this book. Cute rhyming.

OMG ... A Must For Your Child's Library

Kudos to Todd Parr! What a clever, brilliant and fantastic book. One of my two-year-old daughter's first phrases was "That's Okay." * It's okay to help a squirrel collect nuts. * It's okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub. * It's okay to have no hair. Very touching and sensitive. I like to explain the pictures to her to show her why the blind girl needs a dog, or the boy in a wheelchair is just like her uncle. She's a little young for all the topics, but it's never to early to start seeing all the variations in the world.

Awesome

Omg I love this book and so do our grandkids!

Love

We love the simplicity of Todd Par books and the ability to teach children valuable life skills - emotionally and socially. My little guy is drawn the illustrations and the playfulness.

Every child must read—over and over.

Love this book...and his others. Before retiring as an elementary counselor, used it always, in 1st grade, as a lesson. Now, my 4 year old grandson knows to look for “ToddParr books” and loves Mr Todd’s picture with his dogs.

A wonderful book

I love Todd Parr! This book is very easy to read and has a great message ! !

Worth it

very large text with brilliantly colored pictures. Enjoyable for early readers

Excellent book

Every classroom needs this book! It's funny, relatable and so, so important! Todd Parr never disappoints.

Simple and Meaningful

We love Todd Parr and this book is fantastic! Simple sentences to teach a very big concept. I agree with all, except eating Mac and Cheese in the bathtub...that is not okay in my house ;) but when you’re an adult you can eat whatever you want in the tub!

Great book to remind kids of differences.

Great book for all ages!

love this book

This book is great. It really is straight forward at sending the message that everyone is different and that different is okay. It has silly parts, and more realistic parts. My kids love it.

My little's favorite author---she's 3 months old

My little's favorite author---she's 3 months old. She loves the bright colors and the simple pictures. We spend a lot of time just looking at each image and telling her about colors and shapes. Really awesome!

Fun book with a message

The wording is simple, so younger ones don't lose interest but new readers can tackle. The colors are bright and eye catching. It has the potential to open the door for some interesting conversations. I enjoy reading it to my daughter and she enjoys the colors and pictures.

one of the best Todd Parr books

We are big fans of Todd Parr in our house, and this is our definite favorite. It's a really great book for anyone who has a unique family situation, such as same sex parents or adoption. However, our family has none of those circumstances. We just like the book for its loving and accepting messages. I wish this book were required reading for all families!

We LOVE this book!

My 3yr old recognized Todd Parr as the author just by the illustrations. We have one other Todd Parr book, which my son also loves. I was quite impressed with Liam's memory of the author and his dog - we had to find the dog's picture at the back of the book right away! Great book, great examples of differences, and we welcome every chance to talk to our son about differences being NORMALS. Todd's view of things, simplifying differences to show similarities is fresh and easy for kids to understand. I highly recommend this book, or anything by him.

Highly Recommend

Todd assures is all that it is okay to be different

Large drawings and bright colors.

Bright colors, interactive for babies.

I am different, and that is ok!

I love Parr's books. They have few words but have a deep message. I also love the drawings. I think this book would make kids to be more tolerant to difference.

great gif

for my granddaughter

Great book!

Great book, very colorful and all kids enjoyed reading.

We are so different!

And we know how difficult it can be for a child to simply accept who he/she is. Every kid should have a little library full of Todd Parr's books. They teach introspection and empathy, acceptance and confidence, in simple words and concepts that children can easily understand. We just love this and the other books written by Parr.

Great Book!

I love Todd Parr! All of his books are amazing! This one is no different!

Five Stars

Todd Parr is the best kids author. He helps children reflect on who they are and own it.

Fabulous book for young kids

The perfect book to teach kids we are all different and all are great. Great self confidence book and understanding of others.

It's Okay (and GOOD) to be Different

I bought this book along with The Family Book to reiterate to my 3 year old that people are different, and that's a good thing. I like both books for their simplicity and easy reading. My 3 year old is also a fan. I would purchase them again, or for gifts.

It really is okay!

Beautiful book!

Its OK to be GReat!!

What a colorful & wonderful book. This is the third copy I have purchased. I am a elementary school counselor and I love seeing the children's eyes light up when they hear a page that applies to their own little life. It is even more interesting to see teachers who are furiously at work on lesson plans, lift their heads and smile as they can't help but stop and listen to this heartwarming little book that makes us all feel special despite our challenges. I have four kids of my own and we enjoy it here at home also. Todd Parr hits us right in the heart and makes us all sit up and take notice with this simple yet powerful book.

Great book

Love this book. The colors. The rhyming. The meaningful story. Highly recommended.

Excellent book. My son can't read it enough!

Alternative family book

Colourful, high contrast children's book applicable to a large reader base. Depending on listener age, varying levels of message can be drawn out with relevant questions/discussion. Our kids do not have a 'traditional' family unit, this book has helped them understand that there are all types of ways to be different. It's about diversity. Our youngest children love this book. They have taken it for show and tell for the 'me, my family and I' unit at school.

Outstanding

Todd Parr has a wonderful way with words and drawings to pull everyone in. This book is one I buy over and over again, as it represents the act of Adoption (A one time event, like birth) and the forever family in a positive way.

Awesome book

This book is great for young kids!

It's okay to be different is excellent!

We originally got this book from the library. My son has some speech issues, but let me tell you, this book he knows by heart. He can't read yet, as he is only four, but he knows all the words. He feels good because not all the people in the book are perfect. Everyone is special. And the bright colors make the book so fun to read.

Great message and colorful pictures.

My little one loves the colors and pictures in this book. Mama loves the message. We will definitely be purchasing more books from this author.

Great for adults

Love this book. I use it for staff training and even customer service.

Five Stars

My favorite Todd Parr book!

Silly, Cute and Real!

This is a great kids book for helping them feel ok about whatever it is that makes them different! It's silly, cute AND real. It's always a good baby shower gift for the future mom to be who wants to start a library for her child.

Good book to introduce ideas about diversity

This book is a good way to start a conversation with young children about the differences between people. I bought it for my sister's child. They live in a small town in Ohio that is primarily white and Christian and (based on my childhood experiences) that is also racist, anti-homosexual, etc. -- i.e., totally intolerant. I'm hoping this book will plant a seed in my nephew's head that "it's ok" if some people don't fit into the majority. I think this book presents that idea in an easily digestible fashion.

Pretty sure my daughter (19mths) currently thinks this book is about colors-lol. It is great and although some of the message is still not clear to her, she loves it and I suspect will continue to.

Thank you

Book arrived damaged

My book arrived with a bent front cover and dirty pages with some kind of oil that soaked through on every single page.

Another GREAT Todd Parr book.

Colorful illustrations will hold kiddo's attention while the message of tolerance and acceptance is communicated. Todd Parr books are wonderful ways to introduce values to kids.

It was very good resource used to teach differences

I used this book to read to my students. It was very good resource used to teach differences.

Great book

Another wonderful book! It teaches kids that everyone is different in one way or another that's okay. It also has some silly things thrown in which the kids like.

Cute little short story with great pictures

I got this for my friends child she seemed to love it so I would recommend it. Just teaches children that being different is fine, I think its a great idea and a good book.

Great Gift!

I purchased this book to give as a gift at a baby shower. The mother-to-be is a teacher, so I knew I had to be picky about the book I selected for her baby's library. This is a great one, recommended to me by another teacher. It is colorful and amusing, and has a good message. Though some of the reviews mention having concerns about the "macaroni message," I think that kids understand the difference between what is supposed to be amusing and what is not a good idea.

What a fun book!

The message is so strong but presented in such an honest fun way that the reader will find it normal and accepting to not be like everyone else.

Can not say enough great things about this book!

Great for young children

I love this book. I use it in our 1st grade Faith formation classes at my church. It is bright and colorful and grabs the attention of my 6yr. olds. It gets the point across that it is okay to be different in a child's way without any preaching.

Love this book!

My 6 year old loves it he laughs and reads along. He's checked it out of the library three times. So I broke down and bought it for him for Christmas. I think teenage girls (and boys!) should read this daily. We all need a reminder that we're all a little different and it's okay :).

Great book on Diversity

Title says it all.

My grand daughter loves this book and has already memorized it by the pics!

It's okay to be you!

This is probably the best book in the whole world. Kids especially like "it's okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub." This is the best approach to diversity I've ever seen, and it's cute and funny as well as having a serious undertone. Buy it for someone unique!

Great book for preschool classroom!

This is a book I will use over and over in my preschool classroom. The message is exactly what kids need to hear and the bold pictures will capture their attention. I recommend this book to all parents and teachers!

straight-forward treatment of respecting differences

My kids thought the book was a bit long, but I was happy with the variety of "differences" mentioned in the text. I'd use it again.

Great message!

I got this book for my daughter's preschool. So important for kids and so wonderfully written. This is a book that modern day children need to be exposed to.

Perfect for my 5 year old. This book gently lets kids know being different is ok.

Kind of familiar

A great book about acceptance of diversity that a kid can grasp! It casually deals with our differences and helps kids to realize that we all come in different shapes and sizes, and that is OK!!! P.s.-If you have this book, no need to pick up,"The Okay Book" It is very similar.

Love this book

Love this book! It's one of the great things I like to teach to children, it's ok to be different!

It's Ok to be Different

wonderful resource for children in K-3 or for older children to read to younger children. We need more tools like this to sensitize human beings at an early age, that we are all different.

Todd Parr

Any book created by Todd Parr is, in my opinion, a necessity in a classroom. His books inspire acceptance of all people and all ways of life. This book in particular shows that all people are different and that being different is okay. The colors excite the children and the words make the children want to read along.
