The Instrument Procedures Handbook is a technical reference manual for professional pilots who operate under instrument flight rules (IFR). It provides real-world guidance on how instrument-rated pilots can best use the system they've trained for, as well as in-depth coverage of instrument charts and procedures for IFR takeoff, departure, en route, arrival, approach, and landing.

For every navigation receiver and phase of flight, this handbook details the required precision that is needed to stay within protected airspace and make a successful approach. Safety information for relevant subjects such as runway incursion, land hand hold short operations, controlled flight into terrain, and human factors issues are covered here. the emphasis is on airplane operations, but the book also contains a chapter dedicated to helicopter instrument procedures.

The Instrument Procedures Handbook expands on the FAA's Instrument Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-15). This handbook introduces advanced information for IFR operations. Airline Transport Pilots (ATP), Instrument pilots, Instrument Flight Instructors (CFIIs), and students preparing for the instrument rating will find this a valuable resource in studying for the FAA Knowledge Exams and getting ready for their checkrides. Illustrated throughout with detailed, full-color drawings and photographs; also includes acronyms list, glossary and index.

Last updated in 2015, this 2017 edition includes editorial wording changes for clarity and consistency, updated terminology to reflect current rules and procedures, while updated graphics and illustrations improve the appearance, readability and understanding. In-depth sections on instrument charts and procedures cover all phases of flight from takeoff to landing. Each topic covered is well-detailed and explained in user-friendly terms.

Printing quality issues

The text and figures are overly dark and blurred on many of the pages, as if it was stamped on twice but the second time was offset by a millimeter. The pages with this printing error are very difficult to read. I would request an exchange for a copy that doesn't have the printing errors, but not sure if it's a bad batch or if they're all like this.

Mandatory reading for Instrument Pilots

The official standard Instrument Procedures Manual. Make sure you choose the version that comes with the eBook coupon. Available next to the standard version

Great Information but Can't Read It!

I purchased this because its a wealth of information, but the book is poorly printed. Images are very dark and the text is blurrly on about half the pages, which makes it very difficult to read. Also, it takes longer to find whay you're looking for as the subheadings aren't bolded or italicized as are in other ASA books. It's the text, not the knowledge, which is the source of headaches. I highly recommend a reocurring subscription for tylenol with your book.

A must buy for every IFR student

Complete, useful, well made, easy to understand and well designed IFR handbook... it’s very useful for pilots that want to start they IFR training and for general aeronautical instrumental knowledge... I did my IFR rating with this book... ASA is a warranty of success! Highly recommended.

Be sure you can return it after a look.

I got this edition hoping for lots of good info about modern GPS/WAAS procedures and tips. Disappointed. There is lots of info , but it is poorly organized. There is not even an index!! This was the more expensive - color pictures - printing. However, the print quality is very poor and so fuzzy it is difficult to read many pages.

Good quality print, little bit pricey though

Pros: Good quality printed. Cons: $30 bucks for an FAA education book is little too much. Sad thing it is priced that way.

Only problem

Book came in good shape only thing I dont like is that over charts it says not used for navigation in large red letters. It wouldnt be a problem if it didnt block the chart. You can still read most of the information but it is slightly annoying.

A must have for any instrument pilot

If you have or are working on your instrument rating, this FAA publication is a must-have to add to your aviation library.

Must buy!

Recommended for sure! I went from very little IFR knowledge to understanding it very well!
