Imagination has no limit…

Our Heroine: Me. And boy, are we all in trouble. A seventeen-year-old with a love of fantasy and unmanageable hair? Hardly anyone’s idea of the knight in shining armor. I went about life with no idea the world around me was not as it seemed, until one dark night I saw glimpses of things I knew shouldn’t exist.

I’ve got enough problems of my own to deal with, but the glimpses of what I’m certain is a magical world that tantalize me like no other. When I find a pair of turquoise glasses that allow me to properly see everything, I put those bad boys on without a second of hesitation.

I probably should have hesitated. I’m now neck deep in kobolds, pookas, magic castles, youkai, unruly werewolves, talking houses, and an ancient magical mystery in need of solving.

Oh, and magic lessons. Turns out I’m an Imagineer, which was totally unexpected. An Imagineer creates by using imagination, willpower, and magic to form whatever they wish. Their only limitation is imagination, and imagination? Has no limits.
At least, if you’re doing it right.

Okay, but dear gods, HR, please work on your grammar and spelling!

As with most of HR’s stories, this was enjoyable; certainly something to appeal to readers with a penchant for escapism and wish fulfilment. The protagonist (a young woman apparently unscarred by years of benign but unforgivable parental neglect) is remarkably sanguine about her powers. Her stumble into her mystical tutelage, too, was just a bit too damned convenient. I’ll stop there - spoilers and all. But what really detracts - as it often does with HR’s work, are the spelling and grammar. To be fair, the errors are few(ish), but they grate. So, if that sort of thing matters to you, you should brace yourself. Like so many American authors it seems, HR has a problem with irregular verbs. The past tense of the verb ‘shake’ is not ‘shaked’. It’s ‘shook’. The past participle is ‘shaken’... and so on. And spelling: The principal of her school is her ‘pal’ - remember that from grade school - not the ‘principle’ (sic). Things don’t ‘jive with’ (sic) unless they’re dancing. They ‘jibe with’. Don’t believe me, see Miriam-Webster. You might ask “so what? Because language matters and HR knows it. It’s her stock in trade. And for the fee she should get it right.

Another Brilliant world to explore

I'm not sure how many personalities Honor has but as it results in incredible worlds from all over the fantasy genre... I don't care. Her capacity for creating worlds that combine fantasy and believable realism is a joy to read. So many authors loose a sense of internal consistency in order to make their stories more fantastical but Honor Raconteur uses her plot and lovable heroes to keep you engrossed without need for embellishment. Imagineer is a story of a girl who was raised wishing magic was real and when she finds a hint of it in the world we all know she pursues until she finds the place where she has always belonged. It combines extensive mythology with pop culture references and a heavy dose of memes goodness. There are certainly dangers but the soothing of her soul that happens when Rea realizes that she isn't crazy and is no longer alone makes this book feel like a mental hug from someone you love. This story is just an introduction to all the adventures to come but it is an eminently satisfying one. Try this book or any of her others. They are wonderful.

Not up to usual standard

I could not get past the 3 rd chapter. I usually like this authors work, but not this one. Simplistic young adult fare.

A great start to a new series!!!

Imagineer is the first book in a new series by Honor Raconteur. I have read all of books by Honor Raconteur, and I have greatly enjoyed reading all of them, and I could not wait to read this book as well. I was not disappointed when I read this book. From the very beginning, I was hooked, and I read this story very quickly. I basically stopped what I was doing for a couple of days, so I can focus on reading and finishing this book. I thought the magic system in this book was very interesting, and I loved all of the different magical people as well. I thought Reagan was an awesome character, and I cannot wait to see what happens next for her. I cannot wait for the next book to come out, so I can learn more about this world, and get to know some of the other characters better as well.

Something of a disappointment

I've liked many books by HR in the past, and this one sounded interesting in concept. In execution, it felt surprisingly shallow...as well as short, ending without any significant conflicts resolved. It was definitely not to the level of Shingami Detective, and I can't tell whether it was intentionally written down to a younger audience (which I think was a mistake, if so) or was just not given the same level of effort. There were several points on which I think feedback from a good set of beta readers would have been helpful. Some of them were scientific (a fantasy book can avoid science, but if science is going to be directly referenced, it should be correct), some of them cultural (it was off-putting to hear colonization from Europe described as the source of humanity spreading across the world, particularly in a book like this one that draws from a variety of mythologies). If there's a sequel, I'll read it; the author has earned benefit of the doubt with some excellent other books. If the second book also disappoints, then clearly this series is not for me.

One of her better efforts. Hope it continues

Having read several of her books, I believe I liked this one as well as any so far. The characters were engaging and developed during the story. There was plot progression, and some interesting secondary characters, though she needs more work on those. She is developing a more pleasing "voice" in her writing and hope that progresses. Don't usually leave a review on first books in a series like here but maybe others will enjoy this book enough to motivate continued improvement in later books. No romance so far but we'll see in future. She could do with an engineering consultant more than Russian linguist, IMO. Recommended

Very Satisfying!

I discovered and grew to like this author when she created medieval worlds. I believe that this may be only the 2nd of her novels that takes place in a modern or futuristic world that I have read. I look forward to many more of her "urban fantasy" works to come. It is a very good place for her to display her talents if this book is any indicator. She is one of a very, very select group of authors that I read who ALWAYS hit a home run with each book release. I would say that she would do well with a "mainstream" publishing house, but I am selfish. I want her to keep releasing books exactly as she is doing so now. Going with "Big" publishers seems to ruin authors these days. As a result, I have not purchased anything for pleasure reading from a mainstream publishing house in almost a decade now. I even stopped buying Kevin Hearne's books (and I love his writing). I suspect that Indy authors of this caliber will eventually destroy the mainstream fantasy/science fiction business model as we know it today. ...and that may not be a bad thing. :-)

Great start to a new series

Looks like another winner for Honor. It is a completely different story line than most of her other series except for the magic, of course. This has the usual set of interesting characters and does a good job of introducing the MC and the magic principals that will govern this universe. It also sets up for a nice long series that will keep us waiting for the next story. It is perfectly suited for readers of all ages and I highly recommend you purchase it immediately so you don't fall behind the rest of us.

Imagineer A Great Start to a New Series

This book was a wonderful ride through childhood, when we first believed in magic and had a wonderful imagination. I could so relate to the main character and her dysfunctional family. I wish I could have found the magic like she did. I can hardly wait till the next book comes out. I want to learn about all the magical races and find out if they can fix the portals, so magical races can once more travel around the world again.

Great concept, fun read, but ...

I enjoyed this book, and will read the sequels, when available. Imagineering as a new type of magic concept is intriguing, and the storyline is interesting. There are two thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars. The first is that things happen far too conveniently for the main character, which strains credulity. If there were limited luck for an individual in this books version of reality, then the main character must have consumed most of her life's supply in this first book. It is not that nothing bad happens, but the balance feels off. The light tone of the book is a great, but it could be more balanced and still be light in tone. The second is that it seems like the supporting characters cannot have any good/novel ideas; they all have to come from the main character. I get that she is supposed to be a prodigy (or something like that), and many of the ideas coming from her make sense for her to contribute, but really, are we supposed to believe that none of the adults would think of using Google Docs to share info or that some of the adults might not all be so gracious towards her? That's just a couple of many examples, which make the supporting characters less believable as real people.

Very enjoyable read!

The world-building is believable, the characters are three-dimensional, and the premise is thoroughly intriguing! I very much look forward to the next book in the series. My only complaint (and it involves a major pet peeve of mine) is that the book ends with a cliff-hanger. I loathe cliff-hangers as a low, underhanded tactic to ensure the reader buys the next book. And, quite frankly, Ms. Racontour has no need to resort to such methods to ensure reader loyalty.

Another fun World from Honor Raconteur

The first of a new series by a master storyteller. Honoer has put her unique imagination on paper again and created a world where magic is real and ordinary people can become Imagineers . Imagineers are magical beings who can create anything they can think of. Right now, the Imagineers are trying to fix a magical portal system that broke 2 years before WWI. I can't wait for the next book to see how they fix and and find out what happened to the clans in Finland and Brazil that everyone lost contact with.

I like this one. Reagan comes alive for me

I like the most that Reagan came alive in the beginning paragraphs of the story, during the fright she had which introduced her to the world that most humans don't see. I like how she approached learning about this world. I like how our awareness of her relationships with other people unfolds. This is multi part story which continues into the next part of Reagan's tale so be warned. I'm glad I bought and read it, but it does have an okay cliff hanger at the end.

New fantasy favorite!

I love the worlds she, Honor, creates. I've just finished her latest -- Imagineer. But, I'm writing this review to shout out to Ilona Andrews for introducing me to this wonderful writer -- through her suggestion in her blog to read The Shinigami Detective. Since that first book I've read every single book she lists in her fantastic fiction listing. I've enjoyed every single volume, and, I hope she'll quickly continue this new series.

This is Not a Disney imagineering book!

What trash, it is a fictional fantasy story that is stupid. That they prey on the word IMAGINEER is a shame, this author does not deserve this book to be a series, it should dye alone. I am so angry that I was sucked in by the word Imagineer.

Cool

This starts off kinda slow, but gets good about 15 percent into it. Ends on a cliffhanger (curses). I'll be putting this on my reread list, and hoping for a sequel soon. Also, minor rant about factual accuracy: the MC magically makes a giant wall of diamond as a shield. While diamond is very hard, it's also brittle. In fact, jewellers regularly smack diamonds with special knife things to break them into smaller pieces. Diamond would make a horrible structural or defensive material. Metal is better. End rant.

When is the next one?

As soon as I saw a new book by this author, I quickly bought it. This is a bit of a change in genre for her, a little different than she usually writes, but it was well done. Still clean language, a sense of humor, and creative word building. The story pulls you right in. I look forward to the next book. But first, how about a sequel to Call to Quarters?

Outstanding Start of a New Series

I love this book. It comprehensively covers the problems of a person joining a new world. The heroine is adult enough to avoid most of the teenage angst that would normally drive me up a wall (thank you so much for that). I can feel the pain and joy and most of all the sense of wonder in discovering magic is real, and dealing with it as needed. The different magical races are pure fun. The sense of family building makes the pain bearable. The story is wonderful. I'm already waiting anxiously for book 2. Hurry Honor, HURRY!

Super Teenager Steps Out

I have been enjoying the communities in Honor Raconteur’s books for a year, and starting this book, I thought that the self-absorbed teen would be a different generator of plot and character development, but Honor introduces a very rich community and returns to her familiar strengths of engineering, interaction, and compassion.

A wonderful new urban fantasy from Honor!

I loved the premise of suddenly seeing the magic in the world around you. The characters are great and the plot is very interesting. I'm looking forward to the sequel. I really want those glasses and that is an incredible magical power! As someone who has spent a lot of time in Astoria Oregon I was quite confused at first but if you don't try to make this imaginary town match up with the real one you'll be fine.

Bravo!

I’ve read a lot of Honor’s work and love it! This one though made me laugh out loud til I cried! The story is great and I look forward to the next book. Please say there’s a next book. “Fear not, fair maiden!” my pooka guardian assured me cheerfully. “I will banish the foul fiend forthwith. En guard, Duck!”

More Please

I really appreciate the logical and thinking-based female protagonists this author creates. I very much enjoyed the prickly character of the Artifactor series and am happy to move on to this Imagineer series with a very clever, kind, and softer heroine you want to hug. I gave this five stars for the imagination, great variety of myth as well as fantasy represented, and some very nice universal truths included. More please and thank you.

I enjoyed this fluff story on magic

Reagan is a young teenager who has a high interest in magic and the supernatural. When she discovers that the realm of real magic is in fact something she can interact with she jumps in with both feet. As an Imagineer who surprises her trainers, Reagan shows courage and fortitude not letting her lack of experience stop her. From what I have seen so far Reason will go far.

Iffy

I was iffy on reading this book because I’m sick and tired of cliff hangers and waiting because the author has ADHD and can’t focus on one. Fricking. Series. Like ever. But I loved it and now I have to wait two years because, again, ADHD. Or multiple personalities. It could go either way.

Love the story

I have enjoyed this authors other series so I thought I would take a chance on this new one. It didn’t disappoint at all. Great story and some fun characters help the heroine learn and survive in a new world she has discovered. Hope to se the second one soon.

Wonderful roller coaster ride as Rea learns their are no limits but self doubt

Fully developed characters that you get to experience as they meet and develop connections. The storyline exploded into action and just continued. Can’t wait for the next installment! Oh! Please pull in the werewolf boys- they were just so precocious and need more mischief!

WOW!

A fantastic book! A FUN read! It was sooo good that I had a hard time putting it down...Less that 24hrs later....finished..:( Will be looking forward to the next installment of Imagineers! Thank you SO much.

This Book Will Suck You In

I enjoyed everything about this novel. The next novel in this series (?) could do with a bit of romance, but not necessarily. A young woman struggles to cope with a new reality, that she had been told repeatedly didn't exist. Along the way, she discovers the love of family, true friendship, and magic. Doesn't hurt that there's plenty of suspense included. Did I mention the magic?! Every single kind of critter that is mentioned in the mythology of different cultures has been included.🤙

More intriguing than you expect....

I waited to read this book, though I do love Raconteur's books, because I had my doubts about reading a book about a teenager. Have no fear....this is not you average teenager. I loved the characters! There was a good vein of humor with action, pathos and good character development. I look forward to the next book in this series, which I hope I will read before another year passes!

I wanted to hug Reagan

Reagan, the main character, has been alone for most of her life until she discovers that she is an imagineer and has magic. In the magical world she discovers her true family and learns who she is. A wonderful coming of age story.

A great beginning to a new series

Honor Raconteur is quite a storyteller. She excels at creating likable characters, interesting worldscapes, and compelling storylines, all of which you can find in this new book. Why wouldn’t you buy it and read it? Enjoy!

Loved It

I bought this book on a whim and paid more than I normally would for a kindle download. However, it was totally worth it. This story is wonderful, has a refreshingly different concept, and is well-written. I spotted a few small grammar issues, but not anything to reduce my enjoyment of the book. I look forward to reading more by this author and hope to see a sequel soon!

Excellent new series

The MC Reagan manages to capture the essence of wonder at the magical world- and isn't that why we read fantasy? Wonderful story looking forward to a long future series. Great work Honor!

Go ahead and read it

Another new world from one of my favorite authors. Although this story could be considered a young adult title, as a jaded grownup I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next book and a resolution to the situation at the end.

Way fun

Totally believable back to front entertaining fast paced reading. Many twists and turns to keep up with and easily the best modern day fantasy I've picked up in a long time.

Enjoyable read

I really like this book; I wasn't sure about it at first, but then I got into it and remember how great of an author Honor Raconteur is. It's not very fast paced or action filled; it's more calm and you really feel like your living the experience with the main character (very world-buildy). And despite not being fast paced, it's very interesting and holds your attention. I would recommend it to anyone who likes stories with a lot of magic theory or mythical creatures.

New story!

A new storyline, new characters and new places. Catching glimpses of people and places around you, and finding out that magic is real! What?!?! 😀 Love this new book, and I`m ready for the sequel!

Oh how I wish this was real! If it is, please let me in!!🙏

Super fun read! Strong young voice, who DOESN'T secretly wish magic was real😊 can't wait for the follow up, I hope there are many more stories of Regan to come.

Interesting take on mythical beings

It took a while to get into the story, but very interesting. The ending was too abrupt, but looking forward to the next book. Nice to have a main character who was young but not bratty.

Encore

Honor has consistently engaging plots and characters. I love that none of her series are a regurgitated plot of the last. This book is a look into what is your limit to imagination in a magical world within our own.

Great read

Fast pace.Easy read. Complex and interesting characters. Welcome to the land of magical world meets teenage girl. Lots of magical creatures to discover. Story led me to really want to know what happens next.

Loved it

I hated that the book ended and I have to wait for the next one in the series. It is my favorite book so far that the author has written. The MC is so relatable and I like her magic. This book absolutely rates a 5 star.

Looking forward to next in series!! More, please!

Enjoyable. Interesting premise. Cliffhanger at the end promises continued series. Love to see more of Reagan et al!

Really!?! Thats how you end it??????

Fun book, but WHY!!?!?!?! Can't wait for the next one, its an interesting take on the world within a world.

A good start to a new series

This promises to be an excellent new adventure. The world-building is, as always, detailed and complete and subtlety inserted into the story instead of dumped on you all at once. The characters are likeable and well rounded, and their reactions are believable and consistent.

Good YA

Unlike most of her other books this seems to be young adult fantasy. Like all her books it is good and well thought out. Like some anime, high school kid almost raising her self which shocks her new magical friends. Mundane friend just wants her to conform, false friend.

Another winner!

Another winner by one of my favorite authors. I could see myself right along with Rea being fascinated by everything I’ve ever believed in taking life before my eyes. The technical stuff could have been confusing but Ms. Raconteur made it pretty straightforward. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

A great opening to a new world

As a longtime fan of her past works I immediately picked this up, while in my opinion a bit slower than i would have wanted, it reminded me a lot of Advent Mage Cycle book 1, where not a lot actually happened, but it was almost a purely world-building experience, but one that I felt perfectly captured the feel of the world she was creating. I look forward to the next book with impatience!

Another Great Read

It's an Honor Raconteur book, not much to say except it's good reading. Waiting, waiting, waiting for Book 2

Loved this book!!!

I loved it!!! It's shows that it's okay to be different, & that there is a place for all of us!!! Great read.

Great book, cliffhanger ending

A fun book, with a likable main character and dynamic supporting characters. A bit of a younger voice than most of the author's main characters, and a change from a lot of the author's otherworld fantasy, but I still really liked it. It very much reads as the first book in a series with a bit of a cliffhanger ending, but the cliffhanger isn't brutal, just curiosity-inducing.

A new series from Honor that provides a glimpse into magic

Honor has done it again, reaching into a word of magic. This time through the eyes of a young lady, and this time in the modern world. I can't say much more without spilling the beans so I'll let you find out yourself.

First time

First time with this author. Pleasantly surprised. Really good story. Can't wait till the next book.

Great world building

I really enjoyed the introduction to the urban fantasy world that the author created. The characters were realistic and magical, which is hard to do. Can’t wait for the next one!

Nice though the abrupt end makes it feel incomplete

Overal a very nice light read, my only problem with it is that the end is too abrupt. It makes the book feel incomplete, it's also very annoying.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to the next book.

Another adventure begins. Ms. Raconteur has created a new storyline that is set in a more contemporary setting. The story draws you in and makes you excited to read the next book. Hopefully she won't keep us in suspense too long. I feel it will be another enjoyable series, even if we have to wait. This first installment gives plenty of food for thought.

A brand new series from Honor Raconteur .

Imagineer proves again that Honor Raconteur not only has a vivid imagination, but has the ability to craft an absorbing tale. I couldn't put it down.

Good stuff

I enjoy ed the story and look forward to the next in the series. As reader for over sixty years

To thine own self be true

Good coming of age story. Emphasis on choices and dealing with the consequences. Very much of not allowing others to make what are our choices.

Top 3 Favorite Author!!!

I love Honor Raconteur as an author and have read many of her stories; this one was no exception to the witty, remarkable writing I have come to love!! Keep going Honor Raconteur and know that I am 100% behind you buying the books whenever I can!!

dissappointing

I guess I had great expectations, I love Honor's books, this one felt like her heart wasn't in it.

Great book

I love her books. I can't wait for the next on in this new series. She has the most interesting characters. Please try one of her books and you will want to read all of them.

Crying for more.

I love all of Honor Raconteurs books, and every time I finish one I feel like crying out for more! This book has been particularly enjoyable for me because I love the relationships between the characters. They are so heart warming or heart breaking, but they are full.

Finding new friends and adventures

Good YA book. Finding new friends and adventures in a place of magical creatures and discovering ur secret talent .this could be from my dreams when I was much younger. They were great

Exciting, fun, new

I love the stories Honor creates. This was a new world , group of characters, and adventure I instantly fell in love with!!!

Wow!

I absolutely loved this book! I could not put this book down. It was so worth loosing sleep. I need the next one!

Good read

Enjoyable story

Wonder romp

I am Loving the world building, a good mass of serval mythologies. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Very meh

Honestly, this book bored me to tears. There were brief reprieves of humor or excitement, and then back to mind-numbingly dull. Which is a bummer, because I really wanted to like this book.

Fantastic!

Such an exciting beginning to a new series. It's a very good book and the characters have depth and interesting stories. The story flowes beautifully and doesn't skip ahead during her studies, wich is somewhat common in fantasy. Looking forward to the next book.

Great story! Wonderful heroine. I love her attitute and relationships she builds with other key characters.

Loved the character development along with the relationships. Her parents are absent but as she grows with the encouragement of her newfound family. It is a joy to see her blossom!

Great new series!

I’m very exited to see where this series goes. With a brand of magic that can be practically anything you can imagine, the possibilities are endless! Can’t wait for the next one.

Great start to a new series!

With belief all things are possible and perhaps the fantastical real, sorry don't want to spoil the book. Well developed characters and interesting situations.

Great book in keeping with Honors style. Imaginative and exciting without the gore

Great first book in a new series from a great author. Honor keeps you hooked through imagination instead of violence and gore. She's a great character builder and invents unique but relatable worlds with each new series.

Need more of this story...

A delicious book that had me laughing and telling excerpts to my wife to her confusion. Looking forward to the next installment. Honor nails it again.

Loved it ❣

This is my favourite arther❣ and I love her books. In this book we meet a new world and creatures I hadn't heard of, you must read it❣

Needs more

Probably great as the start of a series, not so much as a standalone.

Love the new series! Thanks Honor!

I really enjoyed this book. I’m looking forward to reading the next book and find out what happens with Reagan!

Love!!

I love Honor's books. They are funny, adventurous and her characters seem almost real to me. The best part is they are clean. I can't get enough.

Enjoyable introduction to a new world.

I enjoyed reading Imagineer. It's just what I was looking for, an uncomplicated escape. I look forward to seeing this world fleshed out in subsequent books.

Good Story

Loved it, just the right amount of magic, and the creatures of magic with the human world. Waiting for the story to continue.

Fun read that keeps you interested.

Excellent story! I hope there is a lot more!

Great new series

I love this author and all here works. This book does not disappoint.

Very Disappointed!

I will start out by saying I am an ardent fan of Ms Raconteur and when I downloaded the sample, I was more than prepared to buy this book. Until I actually read the sample. I'll start start by saying that clearly, Ms Raconteur has far too many irons in the fire and trying to do too much and here's why. As I read Imagineer, I was taken by at how very badly written this was, how awkward and poorly written and was utterly baffled how so many people could give it 4 and 5 stars in the first place. It did not have her usual seamless flow that draws you in and I quickly realized why. She, more than likely did not write this anymore than she truly wrote the Warlord trilogy, the followup to Garth and his series. I strongly suspect that Imagineer, like Warlord, was mostly written by 1 more, instead of Ms Raconteur. No matter how good a ghost writer is, like finger prints, no one author can truly emulate another author's style, period. Compare the writing of the Shingami Detective to that of Imagineer. Shingami is HER story, written from her hand, so to speak. They are worlds apart and frankly, I'm not paying $8 for a novel that she did not actually write and was written by a damn awkward hand. I'm very disappointed. And to return to my previous statement that she's got far too many irons in the fires? If you're that busy or have lost that much interest in your own works that you've brought in what is essentially a ghost writer, you seriously need to rethink what you're doing. I love and adore her works, but no, just plain no.

WOW! Best book I've read in awhile!

"Imagineer" has everything I'm looking for in a book - fantastic world-building, interesting characters with depth and humor, laugh out loud dialogue and situations, and heart - lots of heart. I also love that there is not a bit of romance. The MC is in high school - let's leave romance for when she's older! One of my main problems with a lot of fantasy is how dark it can get. Many times the good guys are as morally bankrupt as the villains. This book does NOT have that issue. This is a great book to read during the challenging times we live in because it reminds you of the good things about life and the importance of solid relationships with unconditional love. I love the MC, Reagan. She's smart, she's not whiny, and she doesn't fall into many of the teenage angsty tropes that plague literature. The supporting cast of characters are fun, and I really can't wait until the next book - I already miss the characters! I was really surprised by some of the reviews that called this book shallow. There is nothing shallow about this book. The MC has to deal with real life challenges, several of which are deeply painful. I think sometimes people confuse darkness with depth. Just because the author decided to create characters that work through their challenges and choose to do what is right in spite of how they feel does not mean that it is shallow. Honestly, I find books with MCs who whine and cry all the time to be shallow. Thank you Honor Raconteur for an amazing book! Thank you for an MC and supporting cast that are lovable and just plain hilarious!

Ummm...

The concept was exceptional! The beginning of the book kept me intrigued.. once she was actually able to see and interact with the fantasy world came to a screeching halt. I get it that this is a series and things have to be explained but I don’t get why everything becomes dull. Saving a new adventure for book 2 but I just started flipping pages to get to the end. I’m so harsh because I was disappointed. This story had so much potential. I will leave it at that..

Mary sue to the nth degree

I like the world-building although I didn't find the magic system very well designed. It implies that anything is possible, but possible depends on the author's whims and the need of the story at the time. It has no consistency. Second, the characters are flat as a pancake. Really 2-d, the motivations not well defined. Lastly, and the reason for the one star is the main character is sooo Mary Sue it's painful. She is never wrong, at 17 she is always the person in the room with the best idea, everyone loves her almost the second they meet her for no apparent reason. At one point Reagan asks why do you love me and the answer is because you were nice to us. Really!! These were not lonely abused orphans. They were mature centuries-old beings. I guess it doesn't take much to inspire devotion when you are a Mary Sue. I wanted to like this book and the story plot is very good, but the whole main character is the solution to every problem finally just got to me and I couldn't finish the book.

First in series

Nice young adult series about an isolated teenage girl who starts to see mystical beings. Formula setup with magical beings living in plain sight. The idea of some people using imagination to create is thin and needs more structure. Uses the idea of magical highways in an interesting way. Have to see if it developed in to anything

I wish to be Reagan

Love this new series so much. I think Reagan could of been me as a child, I remember (after watching "bewitched " and "I dream of Jeanie" ...yes I'm old.. I was very young then lol) I used to concentrate so hard on moving an object to come to me , a toy. If I could just will it to be a little harder it would MOVE. This is the feeling this book gave me, like it was right there at the tip of my fingers, the edge of my mind. I was immediately transported back to this time in my childhood where IT COULD REALLY HAPPEN. I was happy for Reagan that it did. I see so much more story to tell, like another reviewer mentioned, PLEASE bring back the werewolf teens, more of her new body guards/family histories ,and the little Kappa (?) guys that jump started Reagan's new life and showed us her utter kindness. This is what sucked me in. The surprise of where her glasses came from, I loved that. I also am off my game and did not see it coming. Great set up for the DUCKS. Hurry up and get the next book out! Thanks for an entirely joyful read for me.

So VERY good!

I don’t generally write reviews. Especially because I feel imbued with the power of the author when I finish a book and expect my writing to be as good... but it’s so very not. But this time I’m doing it anyway. If you’ve ever knocked on the back of a closet and prayed it would take you to Narnia, or stared intensely at a train platform column imagining you saw a shimmering sign of a magic doorway, READ THIS BOOK. It’s smartly written, funny, relatable, and, for once, I don’t feel exhausted by the insurmountable odds that seem to be against the protagonist. It’s mostly a happy, wonderful introduction to a world I refuse to believe doesn’t exist. Never fear - there is conflict and a set-up for what I hope is a long and rewarding series, but you’re welcomed to the wonder in a more positive way than I’ve become accustomed to. I will be recommending this book to every friend who loves young adult fiction, magic, strong female lead characters, history, mythology, or even just escapism with a dash of optimism. If any of that describes you, READ THIS BOOK. You won’t be disappointed.

3 stars = an entertaining read

Favorite parts: A fascinating alternate universe with a dose of mystery and unseen depths. Interesting development of the concept of family. Imagination is awesome (of course)! A fun mix of cultures and mythologies. Not so favorite: Too many side characters to keep track of them all. I hope someone reminds me of where I saw them last if they turn out to be important. Petty best friend syndrome is only tolerable due to the context of her family dynamic. A tendency to treat nonmagical individuals as lesser beings will hopefully reveal itself as a mere plot point to be outgrown in the sequel.

2.5 - 3 Stars - Felt Incomplete

First, I want to say I enjoyed the premise of this and the characters. I love the side characters and how they interact with the heroine. The heroine is kind and geeky and very lonely. I like the idea of magic having to do with the imagination and that anything you can imagine can be true. The reason for the lower review is because it starts off very slow, and it's slightly boring because of that, in addition the book ends very abruptly. I expected this to be a part of the series but with each book have a plot while also contributing to the overall arc, this book however cuts off and it feels like 1/2 the story is missing.

Surprisingly boring

Not a great read for me, unfortunately. Girl in adverse friend/family situation finds magic, friend/family situation immediacy resolves in the most bland way imaginable, girl becomes the best at magic to ever magic and is in no way really challenged by either the people or situations around her, and then cliffhanger. I’ll be skipping additional installments.

Slow start but really enjoyed the story

I've read many, many of this author's books, and I enjoy them very much. That being said, this one took me a bit to get into, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Fun secondary characters, likeable young woman, an awesome and supportive grandmother, and just a bit of suspense. One of the things I like about most of HR's books, is that the writing style is not formal, but more reflects how people these days actually speak. Bring on book 2, please!

Where's the next book?

Imagineer drew me in and kept me attentive to its conclusion. Reagan is a likeable narrator, surrounded by a variety of support characters, loving, neglectful, human, and magical. The world building of a magical realm within the reality we can see was interesting. There is such a blend of different mythologies going on here, but it was never overwhelming. A fun first in series. Looking forward to the next.

Delightfully imaginative

I liked the presentation of all the magical characters. I saw an underlying theme of Regans sorrow ,anger and loneliness at her emotional and physical abandonment by her workaholic parents .Unfortunately this is a reoccurring problem in our society. Hopefully this book will help young readers to recognize these are very real issues .Then find someone to validate them and love them . This is a great book for all those that love magical fantasy. It is a wonderful way to let a teen know there is love available if only they look for it and believe .

Love, love, everything

I have read and enjoyed everything Honor Raconteur has out there and this was no exception. I also wanted and still want magic to be real. The characters are real. My grandmother shared her Irish stories with me and helped my imagination grow. If you're looking for good story and interesting characters, I think you will enjoy this author.

Great read!!

I truly enjoyed this story. It was an honest representation of how a teenager would actually act if she all of a sudden found herself with an amazing ability. The emotions that you’re able to experience right along with our heroine causes you to feel like you’re right in the middle of the story. And I seriously love diamonds. That was awesome!!

Why did I wait so long!

Seriously, I only have myself to blame for waiting so long to start this book. I actually felt like the writing style was slightly different then the authors usual in this novel but equally as good and unique. I devoured this book and literally gasped m shocked maiden style and the sudden ending. I want book two ASAP please!!!

Excellent!!

This is another fantastic and fantastical entry by Ms. Raconteur. I think what I like best about her books is their everyday acceptance of magic and their humor. In this book, Reagan is easy to like and sympathize with, and the clan she stumbles into, also likeable. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and the evil machinations of some horrid villain to become apparent but not yet. I truly like this book and look forward to the next one.

Fell in love with this book!

Where to start? The Imagineer weaves mythology and magic from diverse cultures in creatures who live among us here mortals. The main character is very relatable no matter your age. And the premise is totally original. It left me wanting a lot more, so all I can say in...where is Book 2?!?

Clever concept

I really enjoyed the writing of this book. It was well written. I am hoping Honor writes more about imagineers. I love the idea of gift that manifests an idea into concrete object. The heroine was young but engaging. Quite enjoyed the book.

Wow! Excellent beginning!

Love this opening to a future/alternate earth! The mc is fun to follow from an unmagical into a magical awareness and reality. Love the characters from all over the reality map! This is going to be an exciting series! Thanks in advance!

Good YA

It's a nice start to a young adult series. Be aware, it does end on a cliffhanger. I like the Henri Danforth novels more, because they're more complex and richer, but I think the YA crowd will love this.

Once again, Honor Raconteur delivers.

I've found that Raconteur's books give original stories, enjoyable characters, and a downright fun read. Consistently and repeatedly. This book is no exception.

Great Fun

I love this author. Her characters just come alive and leap off the page. The humor, the banter, the fun plots with twists and turns along the way make for an engaging experience.

Another great start!

This lady just can't write a bad book! I love the supporting characters, and the urban fantasy setting. Looking forward to the next installment.

Worth the read!

Slow start, but I had faith and it paid off. Really neat to see so many different mythologies represented here. As a daughter of a real (Disney) Imagineer, the title was a bit off-putting, until the scope of the term was explained in this book. Perfect term.

Interesting series.

Just finished the first book and will definitely read the next one. All of the different kinds of magical peoples is a bit confusing, but it is a fun premise.

Beginning of another great series!

Truly original series with mythology from all nationalities! I very much enjoyed the story development and the family dynamics too.

Good story

This is a good, unique story. I thoroughly enjoyed. It got an extra star because the heroine is relatable, likable, AND not stupid.

Interesting story line. Good character development

Ending kind of just dangling out there. Is there a second book? A few grammar quirks. But overall a good read.

What a great premise

My initial reaction on what turned out to be the last page was NOT YET! I wanted so much more of Raegan's journey. Now we wait.

Stop and read this

Another excellent story can't wait for the next book, worst part is always waiting for the sequel to a great read

Loved it

doesn't take long to latch onto Rea and the story keeps you turning (swiping) the page looking for the next obstacle to be over come. Eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Another winning tale

I do love this author's gift with language. It's always a joy to start another series written by H Raconteur. It was a fantasy of my youth that magic might be real. Somehow some way. This tale is wish fulfillment.

More please!

Amazing writing as always! I've been a fan of Honor's work since I discovered the Familiar and the Mage series. No spoilers but I really really want book two out now 😁. Please keep up the amazing writing!

Great Book

I liked this book a lot. It was very creative and very clean. No bad language. I will have my daughter read this. I can't wait for the next book in the series

No constant warring

A refreshing read. This focused on the joy of discovery. The main character still dealt with the rigors of reality but did so in a healthy way . Hopefully this could help readers learn to apply it to their own lives and still focus on joy. I love fantasies that teach.

Brilliant and engaging

Another fantastic creation - it's time we figure out how to make this one come true! Honor has an incredibly fresh way of presenting magical worlds that keeps me coming back over and over. Well worth the read!

Mongolian Metal, Magic from Imagination, I love it!

Officially hooked on Mongolian Metal now. Our lovely heroine has excellent taste. I love both the premise and execution of this book, and can hardly wait for more!

Ah youth

I liked the new ideas about magic. Weird family and some would appeal more to a younger reader. Oh well

I didn't want it to end.

Delightful

Good story as always

Very well written with good character development. A bit simplistic but fun! The ending was a bit abrupt but I will be waiting for the next installment.

Fun read

It is a fun read, although the world seems a bit too quickly thrown together, the story happens a bit too quickly.

Very fun!

I really enjoy Honor Raconteur's books. This one was fun, clean, and very enjoyable. I look forward to reading the next one.

Book review

This book is awesome. I can't wait to read the next one. Most of the books by Honor Raconteur are a great read.

Enjoyable

It took a moment or me to get into it but overall an enjoyable story. No drama and fun characters.

Slow start but gets better

A new series from Honor Raconteur! Yippee! I've read everything of hers I can get my hands on, and always enjoyed it. Her books are imaginative and fun, and peopled largely by characters I would like to spend time with (though in some cases in setting where nothing is breakable...). They're always well-edited, too, so free of annoying spelling, punctuation and grammar issues, though I would characterise her writing as colloquial, rather than formal, which is part of the fun. All of which explains why I bought this as soon as I saw it. For the first time, I nearly quit reading a bout a quarter of the way in. It is common enough for a fantasy book to start with the main character in an unaccustomed situation -- it's the perfect way to introduce the reader to the new world. But this time this section seemed to drag, for me. Maybe I'm getting to old to sympathise with high school characters feeling isolated and weird (or maybe the memory is too painful to revisit), but I really wanted to get to the action sooner. Once we did, it was fun and interesting and touching and sometimes exciting, so I'm glad I didn't stop, and I'm looking forward to the next installment. So If you're looking for light, clean entertainment, I can recommend this, but if you're like me, just plow through the first quarter, and you'll be fine.

Fantastic new series from a favourite author!

This is the first in a brand new series and one I'm looking forward to continuing! The amount of mythological research that has gone into this book is incredible and I love finding out about all the different creatures from around the world. Reagan is a great main character and I defy anyone who hasn't at some point wanted to be able to 'imagine' something into existence!! A wonderful start to the series, definitely recommend reading.

Lightweight Fantasy

This author can be relied upon for enjoyable lightweight fantasy. The writing is getting better with each release, This one is a little slow to start but enjoyable when it got going. Ill look forward to the next one.

A fun, imaginative book

A new series full of creatures from myth and legend, the ability to create anything that can be imagined and trouble brewing. A very engaging lighthearted fantasy book that was extremely enjoyable to read and of course we have a likeable heroine and some interesting characters.

Fresh and lively new series

I really enjoyed this - fresh and entertaining. I was losing interest in HR's other series by the end so this has revived it. Hope it continues.

A very good read.

This book cost me sleep! An enjoyable read which pulls you in. Quite a lot going on but it's well managed. Thankfully, unlike some authors, Honor Raconteur doesn't spend too long on the training part of the story and just has it bubbling along in the background. Just about to start going through it again just in case I missed anything.

Always a pleasure

Once again, Honor Raconteur has delivered colourful characters, humour, drama and no heavy-handedness. I'm looking forward to the next adventure!

Lightweight fantasy for teens/young adults

This book fits perfectly for its target audience. Fairly young adults and teens with the attention span of a fruit fly. While the start of the book is intriguing enough, with the heroine discovering more and more about the (strange) world around her, it drops off significantly later in the book. SPOILERS AHEAD. WARNING! AGAIN, you have been warned! SPOILERS! OK, here goes nothing. The imagineers are one class among the whole slew of magical and supernatural beings that co-inhabite this Earth, all hidden under fairy-glamour. They are the only ones who can create objects out of thin air, just by, you guessed it, imagining them into being by an act of will. The more you understand about the underlying principles of an object, and the better your concentration, the more and better you can create things. That's basically it. No limits on the ability. Yet either the heroine has completely failed to understand this basic principle, or she is an incredible airhead that looses concentration and imagination by the page-turn. Because after exactly ONE good idea how to see something inside a stone item, she completely fails to solve her problems in anything even remotely approaching an imagnative way. She barely produces stone-age items to solve a crisis, and her nearly half-a-dozen co-imagineers aren't any better. The problem with a premise in a fantasy or sci-fi setting is, that is has to adhere to logical deductions within the frame of the setting. Yet despite at least two-thousand years of nearly identical history on Earth, resulting in a nearly identical modern society, imagineers during those two-thousand years failed to advance their craft ONE SINGLE STEP. Despite imagineering being supposedly limitless in its applicability. That's the point where this book lost it for me. Yet I still gave it three stars. Why? The characters, despite their flaws, are still loveable, the problems are relatable, and not inherently world-shattering. Yet the problems of our heroine soon devolve into something much too big for her, yet SHE is the one called on to solve them, even when older, more sane, more attentive, logical, experienced heads surround her. So, basically a Mary Sue situation with no releveant reason for it. While the premise is good, the solutions shown are poorly imagined. Yet it isn't as bad as the second book. More to be found there.
