Overall Beautiful!

This collection of stories is perfect. I have bought 19 of the Canterbury Classic Leather Bound books. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! The quality is incomparable. The acid free paper. The gold gilded page edges are lovely to look at, and a joy to turn. They all have a built in ribbon bookmark. 2018. My resolution was to start my home library; compiling the classics first. And, these are must have classics for anyone who genuinely loves books.

Beautiful

Beautiful and sturdy. Very nicely put together.

Bootleg

This is the equivalent to a bootleg version of a book. There is no information on who translated it or what year it’s from. So frustrating. Haven’t read it, which is why I’m giving it one star. Maybe there’s hope. Why did I pay for this???

Great comp. Worth the read

Honestly, I purchased this book as an afterthought. After receiving The Republic, it was followed by the immediate realization that I need to brush up on my greek mythology if I am to truly understand what I am reading. This undertaking—and I say so without error—is significant equally in size and context. That being said, it is not an easy one, but if neither of those is a hindrance to you it is well worth the read.

Mediocre Format

I like the idea of this book, but it has a couple of significant flaws. First, the text is rife with grammatical errors. These are easy fixes, mostly basic punctuation issues. It makes me wonder if this version is produced by a non-English speaking publisher. Second, the cover image is pixilated and looks like a middle schooler's literature class project. The book is also very large. These two complex stories are lengthy, but this format is more similar to a textbook than a novel. The translation itself seems fine. It reads less like an epic poem and more like an Aesop's fable. It's readable, though. Overall, I guess it's good enough for the price. If you care about the books in your home library, I would look elsewhere.

Excellent quality! Highly recommend.

Excellent quality. My 14 yo daughter had been reading online versions so I bought this for her. She immediately read for 30 minutes. She does want to know who the characters in the cover are? Random? Or actual characters? Anyone know?

Great feel

I really enjoy the look and feel of this book. When I am tired and not in the mood, I see the book cover on my nightstand and it gives me a small amount of enticement in order to keep reading. Once in the book, Homer takes it from there. Finished the Illiad and now on to the Odyssey.

Nice looking book

I bought this for a gift, and it was enjoyed.

Impressive for the Price

Great, leather bound option for new classics at a nice price point. I’ll be adding more from this collection.

Do not skip reading this in school!! You'll regret it!

I've become so immersed in history, different cultures, different cultural mythology and methods of the way the world used to be. I read this in high school, but now I have such an appreciation for this type of literature. It is a magnificent read. It captures the old Greek world, although some of it may seem 'outlandish', it's a beautiful epic poem.

Great looking Book!

Bought this as a gift for a family member who recently got into Greek mythology after years of struggling with literacy. He started reading The Odyssey, but that is the second half of the story. I bought him this book so he can have both stories. He absolutely loves it. It is so wonderful to have him discover something that he enjoys reading and to see him actually improve his reading and vocabulary skills while doing it.

No pagination

Yes, the book is beautiful. The edges are gilt. It appears to be leather-bound. Everything is fine with one exception: there is no pagination. Yes, I know, the original Butler translation did not offer pagination, but it would not have been so very expensive to hire a scholar to add the pagination and make it suitable for scholastic study as well as reading for pleasure. I have no problem with the fact that Butler does not use the Greek names of the Gods; most translators of his era used the Roman names of the Gods; I was well aware of this before I purchased this volume. If pagination were added to this addition, I would have rated this five stars.

Beautiful book!

I got this for my kid. When it arrived, we were surprised at how awesome the book looks.

this is a good looking book

anyone interested in greek literature and history should own some version of these stories. this one just happens to have both stories with a beautiful hardcover and gold trim on the pages. i highly recommend this leather-bound classic.

Beautiful, Elegant, and a Bargain

This is a beautiful book, the pages have gold on the edges, the cover is incredibly elegant and sophisticated. This is such a cheap price for the quality of the book.

Great and beautiful book

It's really like an old style book. The perfect gift for a 10yo to read a classic

High quality and no damage

High quality, no damage, very happy qith the book.

Love it

Book was in good condition and I love that the Canterbury classics add the piece in the beginning to help inform the reader of the author and give a little background to the books.

great read

Again if you enjoy Greek Mythology or history I recommend this book HIGHLY

Very nice, and a good read!

Beautiful book, well made. High quality paper... nice leather cover.

Another great addition to this series

Another great book people

Beautiful book

Beautiful book, a must have for an English major :) and aesthetically beautiful

Such a NICE book

I already have waaay too many books to read BUT, I've always this in my collection and the absolute BEAUTY this book is makes it well worth the price folks. Sure it's not an Easton Press collectible but this book is just superbly well made, perfect color, nice cover art, gilded pages, etc. I kept seeing it on my list of items to get through the order and just figured "Aw what the heck, just buy it already so you can stop thinking about it!" lol. I'm more than happy with this book and hope to find the time to read this time honored classic one of these days.

Sexy Book

This book looks so damn good on a bookshelf. It’s a work of art. Seriously recommend it. It’s such good quality for the price.

Amazing product

Amazing stories. I’m glad they were put together in a single book

Beautifully Bound

This title was specially requested at Christmas by 15 year old avid reader and she smiled with happy tears when she saw how beautifully it was bound!

Old Book - Just like New

I read this book over 30 years ago. Ordered and delivered and I was shocked at the quality of this reproduction. Simply amazing.

Beautifully Bound and Wonderfully Illustrated.

I read this when I was a kid and it launced my life. Very nicely done in Leather and gold leaf.

Five Stars

Absolutely love it!

Perfect addition to my library of Classic Greek literature!

Two great stories. Beautiful book.

Great book.

On time

I love this book

Like a good manga

Not sure if I’m just lucky but my copy is upside down and backwards. Other than that it is a beautiful book.

Love

Love this book.

Great learher bound edition!

Wonderful edition!

The most beautiful copy of The Iliad and Odyssey you can buy. Trust me

Leather bound, perfect color, perfect font, embossed, gods names changed back to Greek from the Roman. Even the inside illustration has a Greek key border so when you open a page there’s a Greek border on the left. The most beautiful, perfect book I’ve ever owned.

Good overall

(Canterbury Classics 2011 - Yellow cover with man on horse followed by man with spear and shield embossed on a gold background) It's the Samuel Butler prose translation, which is a well-regarded prose version of the Iliad and Odyssey [now in public domain fyi], but they changed the names of gods back to Greek from Butler's Roman. I noticed something like ten or fifteen typos where the word was misspelled as another valid word, for example you might see "all who escaped depth in battle or by shipwreck had got safely home" instead of "all who escaped death in battle or by shipwreck had got safely home". There were no nonsense typos or printing errors, though.

Classic epic

I have read and own a copy of the Iliad and Odyssey. I wished to give a leatherbound copy to my sister-in-law. The best deserves the best.

Very Nice

For those people like me that still need to feel paper when they read, and believe looking at a computer screen is not great for your eye health..This is an excellent buy! The binding is very sturdy, and the cover is of great quality. Reading this book is not for a beginning reader, but a must read if you want to be well versed in the classics.

Bush did Troy

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Five Stars

beautiful, high quality book.

Illiad and Odyssey.

I couldn't get into it as it was written in old English and difficult to read.

Reprint

This is only a reprint-extremely small font & spacing in faded ink. Spend your money elsewhere than this copy

Good quality reprint

Needed for kids' school reading list. I would rather buy the hard copy than the digital version. The book is made well and will be a good addition to their growing book collection.

How I like the book about it

It was an okay book for a poetry book but it wasn't like a poetry book that I'm using in school right now but it helped me pass my paper that I had to write on it and I like it all I can say is I like it

Good deal, small print

Very small print but a good deal. Both books are consolidated to one. Looking forward to reading it!

Get a different version

The print is way too small.

Nice leatherbound copy

This is a high quality leather copy. Homer obviously had an Achean biase. I was hoping to see the Trojans win the war. Oh well.

Beautiful cover for a classic!

Attractive cover for a classic. This was on my daughter’s Christmas list, and we were all pleasantly surprised by the quality. Nice option for a gift.

Size matters...

Fantastic epics however I wish I had paid more attention to the font size. Larger print would have made reading easier.

Haven’t read but good stuff

Arrived in good condition

Great Looking Book

Bought as a gift for my grandson, he loved it.

Had to use super glue

I dropped the book once and the cover came completely off, But since it was so beautiful and the font was nice I decided to just super glue The cover back on and I’ve had no problem since

Good book

This is a great book. It's a beautiful addition to a library of the classics. It's a beautiful book.

Gift

A gift for my best friend The text is tiny

Wonderful addition to my collection

Wonderful addition to my book collection. I had been looking for a nice copy of the Iliad, and this was definitely it. The Odyssey was just a bonus.

Classic

A hard read but the Iliad and Odessey are amazing tales. I’ve tried many times to read them but failed. I finally read them and am so glad I did.

Beautiful Addition to Home Library

Very nice copy of these two famous poems. It makes for a beautiful display piece in a home library. It has an attached ribbon bookmark that my daughter loved using as she read this book. There’s a nice preface before each story and a nice listing and explanation of the many characters in each book which we found extremely helpful.

Classic

It's a classic book. If you like classic books you'll like it....

Long book

Long book hard to read for novice

Great book

A great book and I was really impressed with the condition no bins and no tears

Amazing classic

Great book! A must read for everyone, especially those who enjoy Greek mythology

Classicly Classic

Ancient Western perspective

I should have read this year's ago

Modern writers have nothing on the ancient Homer. Action, adventure, valor, all in two engaging epicenter kept me reading in spite of their length.

For a class

I read.this for a class i took on The Odyssey. Maybe someday I'll read the poem. You can see from this how the plots of literature were formed

Loved it!

Beautiful book.

Iliad book

Great quality book

✨😊

Amazing book. Amazing story.

Tiny print

This review is for the paperback version. The print is tiny.

Poor translation with typos!

This is an awful translation and would never bring it to my students.

ancient Greece

I read these books in my youth, I found them again today, it's a real pleasure, I really like translation. I recommand it

Stunning book! Couldn't be better.

So gorgeous, my sister geeked out when I gave it to her. The outer edges of the paper are outlined in gold too, so gorgeous! Definitely reliable and worth buying.

My boyfriend order book for school and is very disappointed feels

Seems like a very generic version of the text. My professor had specific reading assignments that I am not able to complete because of the layout of the book. I had to order a different book

AMAZING, WORTH THE BUY!!

Beautiful, great quality, beautiful illustrations. Homer is my favorite literary genius of all time. Definitely worth it. Only complaint is some glue on the book mark. Otherwise wonderful.(I got mine brand new, can't speak for the users who bought used).

No Roman Titles

Butler is a longstanding and famous translator of Homer. I find his translation to be quaint, and I personally have no problems reading some rather archaic turns of phrase. However, where this particular edition goes wrong--and I am not at all sure why Butler would have done this, nor am I a Homer scholar, so I don't care overmuch to find out--is that the Greek gods are addressed by their Roman titles. So, for example, Zeus is not the king of the gods, but "Jove." Even some of the mortals' names are treated the same way, e.g., Odysseus becomes "Ulysses." I can think of no good reason to do this. Not all Butler translations are this way, but this one is. Otherwise, if you don't mind converting the names in your head, or if you prefer the Roman titles, then this is a cheap and easy kindle read.

Standard Greek Classic

Another comparative version of classical Greek heroic epic literature

A true classic.

It's incredibly long but a very good read. I highly recommend it to any one who is interested in classical literature.

book is too big and font is too small, faded text

i would have rather received a smaller thicker book it like the tried to fit 4 pages on one page and all of the text is faded almost impossible to read in low light

Fake

Tiny, blurry text. Must be a counterfeit.

Writing too small

the text is just really small, haven't read the book yet though so this isn't an assessment of that

Small text and almost no center margin

I guess I wish I would have went a little bit deeper into the reviews on this. I gave the bad reading because of the book itself. The font or text size is extremely small. That makes it hard to read and focus on. Also there is almost no inner margin on the page so I find that when reading and I get towards the center of the page I keep having to flatten the book out so I can read the words. It's way worse once you start getting towards the center of the book. How to recommend finding a different copy with larger font size and a better indentation or margin in the center.

Broken spine!

It came split in two

Something to sink your teeth into

Something to sink your teeth into…

You have to like Greek

I really enjoyed this translation. It was difficult reading and you had to pay attention. It was great to read the actual stories that I had heard all my life. It was easier to follow in the prose format than trying to read it as a poem. It was worth reading if you have a real interest in the stories.

Terrible!

This is the lowest of quality. Unbelievable that this item actually cost money.

Leather bound book

Bought for my son. He was very pleased.

all should read

two classics

Excellent edition

The edition is really good. It has no illustration.

Fine print

Print was way too small for me to read.

This is merely a printed copy of the text from the book; not at all what I was expecting!

Not a pleasant copy to read; if I wanted something that looked like a term paper instead of a commercial book, I would have ordered that.

Beautiful gold-leaf book!

Beautiful book with gold-leaf pages, a page marker, and a nice textured hard cover!

Great Translation!

Superb translation of an old but wonderful Classic. Worth the money and definitely the time to read and enjoy this. Great for the teenagers who need to read for school.

It is in excellent condition and looks new

I would not have believed this book was used if I had not been the one who bought it. It is in excellent condition and looks new! I made a very good buy!

Still a nice version of the Iliad & Odyssey - and attractively presented

This is a version of Butler's late 19th century translation of the Iliad and 1900 rendering of the Odyssey. His is a prose version for both and, despite its age, it still reads well and should be considered by those looking for a prose translation of the Homeric epics. The book itself is also attractively laid out - with gilded page edges, spine and covers. Despite its cheap price, the book itself is not presented "cheaply" - it is thus not only a convenient edition of both Homeric poems, but also an attractive addition to your library.

Leather bound isn't leather bound

The book arrived and the condition was great. HOWEVER, the book I bought was 'leather bound'. It's not. It's hardcover which I'm ok with, but if you advertise the book as leather bound, I expect that.

Still the best

The old classics are still great.

Great book

Had to get this for my mythology class. I enjoy reading about Greek and Roman mythology. Durable pages and doesn't bend easily.

Hi

Love it

Worth Every Penny

I loved the translation, the quality of the pages and binding. Truly a most have in one’s library.

Nicely bound classic

Homer, what more to say? Nicely bound.

A Huge Hit

This was purchased as a gift for my grandson who likes all the Hunger Game novels and other similar current stories. His interest was piqued when I told him many of them have their roots in the Iliad and Odyssey. This is a beautiful version, especially for the cost. The paper is quite nice, leather bound, gold trim. All in all it makes a nice presentation and my 12 year old grandson loved it!

Grrrreaaat

Great quality a great collectors

Perfect.

Just what my granddaughter wanted. Received quickly.

Nice book

A very good read, nice made book! Would recommend to anyone. Better than others out there, I have already looked!

A classic to show the duality of many ancient man.

I find the story fascinating and intreguing. Although the translation, as with most old texts I've read are difficult to follow. Insights into characters of the story show vast differences in their personalities compared to some commentaries I've heard and read. All in all, a good read.

Gorgeous!!!

Pics don't do it justice. Beautifully done..

Made a nice presentation with its gold edged pages

Lovely book! Made a nice presentation with its gold edged pages. My GrandDaughter loved it.

You got to respect the classics man. This is a great read. Beautiful book cover. Just what I needed to add to my collection.

IIT IS ACLASSIC I HAD NEVER READ BEFORE. NICE INTERACTION BETWEEN MORTALS AND THE GODS

Good translation sadly poor binding printed in China

Poor quality binding. Of course it’s printed in China. I just took it out of the packaging and the second page has come apart from the binding. This translation I like so far.

It’s really bad

Really terrible I disliked on how this is a summer reading book it is a really bad book and boring

Fantastic

Everything from the cover to the pages, the ribbon bookmark, to the art and translation looks and feels great. I love it!

Highly recommended

Gorgeous book cover and book.

Three Stars

Book used for the World Literature book we purchased

Iliad & Odyssey

Beautiful book. Great addition to anyone’s library/collection/ bookcase.

Five Stars for Homer's Epics

What can I say, these are two classic ancient epic poems. I am in my 50's and just getting around to reading them after taking Hillsdale College's online course - Great Books 101: Ancient to Medieval [...], wherein I was introduced to these and others such as The Aeneid and Oedipus Rex. Whether this is the best translation of these epics is beyond me, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Beautiful binding

Nice leather book, gold trim, and a beautiful ribbon inside.

Five Stars

Very nice addition!

Perfect

Perfection!

The Poetry of an Oral Tale

I have read the versions of the Iliad and the Odyssey by Robert Fagles and Robert Fitzgerald. I like the Samuel Butler much better as it reads like an oral tale told around the campfire at night, especially the Odyssey. While the Butler version is written as prose and both the others are poetry; I found the Butler much more poetic.

Five Stars

My favorite book on the shelf

A True, Original Classic

It is Homer, what else need be said?

Poor quality

Just received and the binding is separating from the pages. Pretty disappointed.

Not want I wanted

Not what I expected

Good quality

It came exactly as expected. Good read!

Quality Construction for a Great Classic

I purchased this book to add to my collection of Hardbacks worth having. I do own a Kindle, however it is something about owning a classic in a quality bound book that cannot be replaced!

Praise for prose...

An excellent translation of Homer into modern prose that is both easy to read and enjoyable.Immerse yourself in a long ago time and wonder. A must read of two of the great works of the West....ah, that "wine dark sea".

Haven't read this since 8th grade - a long time ...

Haven't read this since 8th grade - a long time ago! A classic and worthy of reading again. Very violent - I'd forgotten how much. Gives an insight into the culture and attitudes of the early Greeks. Should be required reading.

These stories are some of the most famous, and ...

These stories are some of the most famous, and intriguing that we have. Reading these will help you understand even more about things that we say/refer to in our culture.

Five Stars

This is a great service- it worked very well.

It is a good read, but details and versions of the story ...

There are several versions of Homer's epic novel and this one falls in the average category. It is a good read, but details and versions of the story you might have understood growing up will be a bit different but overall an acceptable read.

POOR PACKAGING

Did not buy this book for the author, he wouldn't be in my top 3. Bought this book for the look to display and this is how it showed up!

Excellent!

A wonderful classic! We read this with our History class. We enjoyed reading along with a dramatized audio version of this book.

Five Stars

Bought this for a teenager, it's everything we expected.

Five Stars

Bought this as a gift for my boyfriend. It is exactly what he wanted, and he loves it!

As easy to read as The Illiad and Odyssey can be made for the modern reader.

It's a little difficult to read for someone not familiar with the story due to all the Gods listed, etc. It's about as easy as the original story can be made. I would recommend this version to anyone who is willing to invest the mental effort.

Classic

I only read a few pages and found it was OK if you needed a soporific to help you sleep.

This is the Samuel Butler translation - not the Fagles translation

Despite what's stated on this product page, this leather-bound Canterbury Classics edition of the Iliad and the Odyssey is NOT a translation by Robert Fagles. Rather, it's a one-volume Samuel Butler translation. I ordered it because the description said it was a two-volume Fagles edition, and am now returning it. Until the copy on this page is corrected, potential purchasers should be aware of what they're getting. My one-star rating is based on the misleading copy, not the quality of the translation.

Five Stars

Beautiful book easily worth the low cost

Great stories, bad translation of the Odyssey

This review is split into 2 sections, first a review of the translation itself and then a review of the Kindle edition. Translation: Homer's stories are great and in this translation extremely easy to read. They were originally written in dactyllic hexameter, a very difficult-to-read metric. Some translations (Chapman's and Pope's) attempt to maintain the rhythm and while they succeed in maintaining a rhythm, the convolutions necessary to make the story fit make them very difficult to follow. The Butler translation does away with all attempts at poetry and is written in prose. This makes the story very easy to follow. One glaring problem is that while the Iliad follows the original Greek (and hence the Greek names), the Odyssey suddenly changes and Zeus becomes Jove, Poseidon becomes Neptune and so on. This makes the story extremely difficult to follow as every character "changes name". Kindle edition: In terms of the Kindle conversion, this well done. This edition does not suffer from broken lines as other Kindle editions do.

Questionable

I have not bought this book. But I doubt that I would, given that the names of the translators (Greek => English) are totally absent from the title page. Yes, we are told there who wrote the introduction. Wonderful! But that is tangential information at best. Perhaps the names of the translators are buried somewhere in that introduction, or elsewhere in the book. But that does not work for me. That is essential information that should be displayed very prominently -- on the title page.

Fraudulent, not translated by Alexander Pope

The cover said it was translated by Alexander Pope. When I got the Kindle version it was translated by Samuel Butler.

The Past Revisited

I read the Iliad and Odyssey in high school 50 years ago and wanted to read them again. Although I enjoyed both books long ago, I have a greater appreciation of them now. Reading these books in their original poetic format would have been difficult. These editions of the Iliad and Odyssey have been translated as prose and were a pleasure to read, especially for the price.

Classic you wont ne disappointed

This is a timeless classic everyone should read before they die

Great story but poor editing

The story is classic but the editing mistakes increased throughout the book and became distracting.

Great book

Just great

Where’s the glue.

Received my book after much anticipation. Unfortunately the book was not glued and fell apart as soon as I opened it. Great customer service though. They shipped a new one to me immediately.

Beautiful yet broken

Beautiful cover but like mentioned in other reviews, the binding of my copy is broken too.

Nice leather bound book

Grandson loves it

Great Book

Purchased for my son, he loves these book. Great quality!

Fantastic

Visually a very nice book. One of the best I’ve had actually, and a shame proper books don’t come like this anymore. Well translated and written, cogent and descriptive. Very happy.

Beautiful Book.

Just as I expected - a beautiful book and welcome addition to my library. On the shelf with my other Greek themed books. I will enjoy delving into this book in the years to come.

High quality. Looks great

Like all the leather bound classics it's very high quality and worth the price if its a book that your particularly interested in. If the story is appealing to you and you want something nice looking for your book case it's perfect.

It’s written in prose and not verse!

The book is charming and pretty, and the translation is really very good too, though I wanted to get a text something similar to the original/written as a poem. I’m still very happy with my purchase, because of its quality in everything.

Looks good

This book has been really well translated. Lovely to have both books in one volume. Easy to read.

Simply marvellous.

What a beautiful read this book is. I feel like I am there. A book of prose which affects you like an epic poem. Simply marvellous.

Nicely bound

Book was of high quality with leather binding and gold page edging. Bought as a gift, it felt good giving such a quality item.

The beauty of the cover really took my breath away

Arrived on time and in perfect condition. The cover is beautiful and the pages take you to another world, highly recommend this product to any fan of the ancient period and collector.

Pleasantly surprised.

Can't believe the quality for the price.

Superb quality

Haven't read the book yet but the quality of this edition is simply outstanding.

Fantastic product

Classic stories in a beautifully presented, leather bound book. A must have for any book shelf.

Five Stars

Excellent condition, looks great

A keepsake

Solid and beautiful keepsake book. Samuel butler's translation is easy to follow even for earlier literary style

I wish all my books had such a nice cover and feel to them

I wish all my books had such a nice cover and feel to them. I love everything about it physically from the golden gloss on the paper sides and the imprinted hardcover design. Very nice feel, and the bookmark is very nice too. The content of the book itself is classic and a great read for all. Very well worth the money!

Fantastic book

One of my favourites. A must for any collectors. Love the illustrations and leather bound cover.

Prose Translations

This e-book edition contains the prose translations of The Iliad and The Odyssey as translated by Samuel Butler. Although rather embarrassingly a lot of people in this country do not seem to realise that the originals were in verse these prose books are still good to read and will probably appeal to people who do not particularly like reading poetry. Although there are some typos in this, they are not serious enough to really affect your reading, and mainly come down to at times a full stop instead of a comma appearing in the text. If you are wondering if the translations themselves are any good, let me put it to you like this - people even making modern translations still refer to Butler’s work. The Iliad Homer’s epic of the Trojan War is a powerful piece of writing and has influenced so many from ancient times up to the present day, and long may it do so. Taking place near the end of the war, so this also goes back to the cause and previous battles in the war and siege, and so we read of what has happened, as well as what is happening, making this an absorbing read. With tensions between members of the same sides as well as the actual war, there is also the intervention of the Gods, as they seek to redress their own squabbles with each other by aiding different sides, to get one up on other gods. Despite its age this still has some of the best scenes of battle, that can be quite visceral and realistic, reminding us all of how bloody things can get. A tale that has then romance, war, heroism, trickery and scores to be settled, this always makes for a great read and is something that is a cornerstone of Western literature, and a pure reading pleasure for those who are interested – and let’s face it, who wouldn’t be? The Odyssey With The Iliad we read of the Trojan War, but here it is over and thus we read of Ulysses’ return home, which takes many years. Whilst he is away so his son is brought up seeing many men living off the wealth of the land and wooing his mother, Ulysses’ wife. With only two episodes recounted by another, the majority is thus what we are told by Ulysses himself, and thus we read of adventure and intrigue for our hapless hero. But the question always sits in the back of your mind – is this what really happened, or was Ulysses more likely having dalliances with other women? Because although his journey wasn’t too long across the sea, so he seems to travel everywhere thwarted by the gods, in his efforts to get home to his loving wife. So, although this is serious in structure and plotting, every time you read this you feel like this is a tall tale, and one that would have been told in the taverns of the day, by someone who was perhaps a little inebriated. So, if you want to read this as being what happened, or as a series of porkies, it doesn’t really matter, as it is still enjoyable; however, if you take it as the latter you may come up with ideas to explain to the missus why you have been a bit too long down the pub. In all these books are well worth reading, and as I have already mentioned may be easier for some as they are not in verse. Personally, I have read both of these over the years in prose and verse translations and happily go between the two, so even if you do actually prefer verse translations you will still find yourself enjoying these.
