I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg was outstanding and inspirational. The book could be helpful to older children and even adults who might benefit from a high-level overview of Ginsburg’s life (beginning as a child), her challenges (i.e., discrimination, inequality, etc.) and her legal career/achievements. That’s because Levy beautifully and simply presents Ginsburg’s life story in plain, clear, yet descriptive language. It’s also a standout for its impressive and stylistic illustrations by Baddelley. As a professional communication strategist, I was impressed by this book because the author did a fantastic job of distilling everything down about Ginsburg into this one easy-to-understand story. She also threaded five important messages throughout the book: “I disagree.” “I object.” “I beg to differ.” “I do not concur.” “I dissent.” She also provides excellent back matter that includes more about Ginsburg; notes on her Supreme Court cases; and a selected bibliography. Such a great resource, especially for older children who may have a school project. This book is very appropriate for young children ages four to eight -- as well as anyone older who wants to know more about RBG.

This book is beautiful in words and illustrations, and gave me chills as I read it to my students. I highly recommend it!

Good read

I purchased this book to read to my 4th grade class. This book is awesome! It is so inspirational. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was such a progressive advocate for equality. My class had the best discussion on how we have a responsibility to stand up for others- how if we want good things for ourselves, we have to also want them for others. I love this book SO much and will continue to share it with lots of kiddos in years to come.

She was a hero! And glad a can share her with my class of first graders!

While this book is geared towards a younger audience, it is worthwhile reading for any age. I bought 3 to give to each of my young granddaughters. The story is written in a understandable narrative and gives tribute to a wonderful person who tried to make this a better world for all. I had to wait many weeks until they were finally delivered. I am certain there was a great demand for this books. They were as described, was well packaged, and arrived much later than anticipated.

Great book with a lot of high level academic language for children! I read this book to my third grade students and they all really enjoyed it. The bright pictures and the bold text really make words pop and give children (and adults) something to ground themselves with as they read. The repetition of the words "I dissent" as well as using it along with other similar words (she disagreed, she did not concur, etc.) is a GREAT way to challenge students to use different, more colorful language without being overwhelming. I will warn teachers that there is a page that has in bold (because it's a quote) "The female sex is ..." and while it uses this speech to be more formal/in the times of the story, students are bound to catch the word and giggle. No worries though because it still has a great primary message about girl power and standing up for what you believe is right. There's even a secondary message towards the end about being able to respectfully disagree with someone and not have it ruin a friendship. I would definitely recommend it! (And the pictures and content pairs nicely with the book, Separate Is Never Equal)

I am a docent at the Maltz Museum for Jewish History in Cleveland, Ohio. We have a new virtual exhibit on Ruth Bader Ginsburg beginning on February 24. I am prepared for the adult audience, but I needed a little support for preparing my remarks for elementary and middle school attendees. This is a wonderful addendum to use with this population of attendees. Thank you.

This was an easy read and really got across an important lesson in a clear way. It important for our children and grandchildren, for all of us, to understand it’s important to take a stand when we don’t agree with general consensus. And we can and should do this in a clear definite manner. All of this is so very important in these days when our country is so divided. And given RBG’s passing, we must continue her legacy.

I ordered this book MONTHS ago and now I see why it took so long to arrive! As a mother of three, a classroom teacher for 25 years, a lover of books and RBG, this book made my week! I'm amazed at the fabulous writing and illustrations. Talented author and illustrator!! I'm going to be purchasing several more as gifts. So worth the wait! I cannot wait to read this to my students!!

My 8 year old son loved this book and even though its on the longer side for a read aloud, its engaging and interesting and does a great job of explaining RBG along with concepts of social justice in a way that children understand. I will be using this in the classroom as well and am excited to share this with my students!

My son is in love with this book and he asks that it be the last book he reads every night before he goes to bed. We have been reading it everyday straight for about 8 months. The message is phenomenal, the illustrations engaging, it teaches and inspires. I truly don't mind reading it every night - which is saying a lot.

We love this book. I bought it for my son right after he was born and it is still a regular in our nightly story reading. Not only does this book do an excellent job of explaining the courts system and the importance of equality (which is by far the focus, it discusses how Ruth’s husband did much of the cooking and housekeeping, and men should have the right to do that without turning heads) but it also discusses other prejudices, such as the problems Ruth faced being a Jewish woman. It also has a few pages in the back after the story is over that gives a more informative, statistical overview of her life, however the story itself if beautiful. I have read it to many of our friends who all love it as well, and it’s now one of my go to gifts for people with children!

I read this to my 2nd grade class for Women's History Month. I was not sure how much they would relate to points made in the book. I teach in a school with a diverse population. We are a Title I school due to the low income of our immigrant families. Last month my students learned about r. Martin Luther King,Jr. and Cesar Chavez. In the beginning of the school I explain that I am Jewish and so celebrate different holidays than they do. My students are fromMexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Armenia and the United States. All of them have mommies who work outside the home. After we discussed what "Dissent" means, I read the book. My students reacted , rather boisterously, page after page. They love this book! Me too!

A beautifully written and illustrated book—I love sharing it with my students and introducing them to a new hero to look up to. I always add that Ruth not only went to law school with a new baby, but she also took care of her husband while he was treated with cancer at the same time. She is a rock star.

Another gift for my granddaughter because I want her to know the legacy of the notorious RBG and the other women who have paved the way for her to be able to be anything and anyone she wants to be.

I had been wanting to get my hands on this picture book about RBG's life for a while now. When I first saw it in a colleague's classroom, I knew I had to have it. I was able to incorporate this into a lesson about biographies, but I think it is such a great read to share with kiddos for any reason at all! There are so many great vocabulary words and life lessons within this one picture book!

I would highly recommend this book to young readers; as well as adults. It contained interesting facts about her life that I did not know, and the illustrations were beautiful.

I was concerned that this book would be a bit too dry for my 5YO daughter, but she is fascinated with it. She has a few other books with strong girl characters, but I think she really likes that RBG is real! And alive, right now, still doing important work. I love the way the book presents the various challenges RBG has faced and how she very matter-of-factly disagreed with whatever she was told she couldn't do. The part with Scalia was also very good, showing that we can disagree with our friends and still respect and enjoy them.

Excellent book!!! Lively pictures. Beautifully written. My 7 year-old loved it. A fabulous way to teach kids about this outstanding human being, RBG. RIP.

LOVE this book! It teaches young women that they do not have to be "agreeable." The story of Ruth Bader Ginsberg teaches us that it is important to stick up for the things we believe in and to stand up for others who are oppressed and facing injustice. I really love the end where it talks about how we can still be friends with the people we disagree with. It addresses anti-semitism, racism, and misogyny head on, so be prepared for such discussions with your child.

Great pictures, engaging story, and now my son knows a lot about her. It’s a good jumping off point to start discussions on her.

I bought this for my six year old daughter and it has more or less served the purpose: an introduction to an important figure, an introduction to history, and a positive role model for a girl who is being raised to have ambition and grit (we hope!). She enjoys it well enough (and I think my partner enjoys it even more!). The art is good. I'm afraid though, as story-telling, it isn't all that great: there is too much information packed in and not enough story. We get an understanding of Ginsburg's life, but for a young girl, I'm not sure there is enough emotional content to really connect and understand. The author tells rather than shows, as it were. I don't regret the purchase and have read it several times. But I'm not sure that it is as successful or impactful a work as it could have been. It is a good choice for children between the ages of 5 - 8, I would think.

What an excellent children's book about the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Gindsburg. Ginsburg fought for equality for women and for marginalized racial groups. Ginsburg's mother wanted her daughter to be educated in a time where few women went to college and especially Law school. Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her family encountered prejudice because they were Jewish. I didn't know that before I read I Dissent! I admire Ruth Bader Ginsburg and I am inspired by her story. She hasn't retired yet. That says a lot about her, I think.

This book is written for 8-year-olds and I was wondering how would the biography of a judge be of interest to children that young. It turns out that this is a very fascinating modern day story about a modern day hero, and stories about heroes are just what children enjoy. It is probably suitable to even younger children who might require their parents to read to them - but guess what? I think the parents would love it.

This was a gift to my daughter and it’s a great book for kids about an incredible woman! She’s such a wonderful role model for the American people; not just for young girls, but boys too.

Bought this for a secret santa gift for a law school student. Was worried it might be a little weird to give her a children's book, but she LOVED it and now I kind of want to buy one for myself (because, of course, I read it before gifting it). Beautiful illustrations, and a great empowering story. I especially love the page on her friendship Scalia (RIP).

My granddaughter is 10 and I bought this as my suitcase gift on my recent trip to CA. I am sure distant grandparents will identify with the "suitcase gift". I would suggest reading it together as I was able to fill in parts of the history that otherwise might have been missed. She loved the book and I enjoyed our together activity.

I ordered this for my little sister's 4th birthday. I'm Jewish and she isn't and she is always wondering who is also Jewish. I really wanted give her a book on someone she could look up to and I couldn't think of anyone better than RBG. She absolutely loves this book. My mum reads it to her at least twice a week.

This is a brilliant book. It's well-written for a grade-schooler to comprehend, and the illustrations are well done. The message of the book is strong and clear, and there is a sense of purpose and justice on every page. The book doesn't pull punches or sugar-coat the discrimination and struggles RBG faced. You want a book that communicates a message of justice and strength to girls (and boys)? This is a great choice.

What a fantastic book!! I read this tonight with my 7-year-old son. He had a lot of questions and thoughts, which provoked a thoughtful and important conversation. I'm also an attorney but his friends' moms aren't, so it was great to show him that I'm not the only lawyer-mom and that lawyers do important work. I appreciated the language and writing style, and we both liked the amazing illustrations. Kudos to the author, illustrator, and publisher!!

I loved the concise, expressive brevity. I would recommend this to ANYONE who is raising children with a sense of purpose and meaning. I would especially recommend it to young girls or parents of young girls, but it is equally suitable for both genders. I chose this rating because the book was a superb use of my money and my time.

I bought this book for my 5 year old son. He was rather riveted with the story, and said, "Mom, girls can do anything they want to!" at the end of the story--exactly why I bought this book for him. Objective achieved! It offers a simple and clear story about RBG (my personal hero) and it is well-written. I'd recommend this book for any young child. And adults.

Amazing book and super fast delivery!!

Such a great story of RBG with wonderful illustrations and layout. It's written very well with children in mind as opposed to some I've seen that are poorly executed boring reads simply paired with illustrations. I love that they included situations in RBG's life that children can connect to now.

I dressed as RBG and read it to a 5th grade class for a guest reader event. It’s rich in detail, and gently passionate, but there’s not an overwhelming amount of text per page. The illustrations are large and beautiful.

This picture book is an introduction to the life and work of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The illustrations are wonderful and support the story well. There is a flow and direction that are easy to follow. Well written and thoroughly enjoyed by my 9 & 6 year old children. My son and I read this together tonight. He gave it a big thumbs up!

My daughter and I LOVE this book. I saw it on facebook and immediately went out and bought it. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is such an important figure in our current and past history. My daughter and I have read this one over and over. It's so important to show that we all can make a difference and this book shows how she did that her whole life.

An awesome and inspiring book. My 3rd-grade daughter read it in school and liked it so much that she encouraged us to get it. Manages the tricky task of concisely covering the facts of RBG's biography in a way that also conveys the essence of her personality. As good as the best of the Who Is/Who Was books (which I also really like).

I bought this for my three year old niece for even she’s old enough to read it. I read it and enjoyed it thoroughly. Great for about 8 years old depending on their reading skills, but as an adult I loved it. Terrific illustrations too. Highly recommend- and she resisted!

This book is amazing. Would be a great book for a child. I actually bought it for my adult cousin. It's kind of a running joke between us that we are the only liberals in our family and both really admire RBG. She loved the book, especially the back section that went into more detail.

I bought this fabulous book for my 5 year old twin grandchildren and we all loved it! When I read it to them I skipped the page where her mother died right before her high school graduation because of their age but the rest of the book was great! They understood it and asked questions and it was a wonderful learning experience about one of the greatest women of our time!

A perfect book and beautiful tribute to RBG!

Gift for three granddaughters.

I bought this book on the recommendation of Jane Yolen, who does not steer me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written biography of Ginsberg and can see why it is such a popular book. It also served as a mentor text for me for the biography I was writing. Every school and library should have a copy of this book.

This is an important book for upper grade elementary students in 2018 and beyond. It clearly shows the power of the presidency in nominating these judges who make decisions that affect Americans for generations. It's a compelling story, wonderfully illustrated, that highlights determination, resilience, and tenacity. A great companion to the movie!

This is an outstanding picture book biography. I love the way the author has identified a central theme of RBG's life -- refusing to tolerate injustice -- and used that to tie together a narrative of her life. Obviously, it's brief and incomplete, but it conveys the essential truths of her story. Brilliantly done. I'd recommend this one for all ages.

My seven year old daughter loves this book. It had prompted some great conversations about women in history and in movies.

My daughter is seven, and an avid reader. We read this book together (because I wanted to learn myself) and we both loved it. The book does a fantastic job of introducing kids to the incomparable Ruth Bader Ginsburg. My daughter has gained another great role model. What an amazing and inspiring person and a VERY well written and illustrated book for kids as young as 4 (or younger depending on how quiet they can sit through longer books). My 6 year old daughter enjoys reading it on her own as well as having it read to her. Very inspiring and RBG is an incredible role model for anyone!!

She's asked some tough questions to answer these days, but I'm so proud of her for taking an interest and asking. No better way to learn about our government than through the story of RBG -- the ultimate SuperWoman.

Great learning information

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the heroine of our time. I bought this book for my granddaughters. It is my fervent wish that they never accept anything less than "Yes--whatever you want" as an answer to their quests in this life before them. Thank you, RBG. Live long and prosper....

I ended up buying this for two friends because it was so well done and good for eight year old and nine year old girls. It exceeded my expectations with the illustrations and being age appropriate and not boring.

Its important in this day and age (especially in the U.S.) that we teach our girls how to be strong, brave and confident. Reading these types of books to our daughters helps to send the message that are just as valuable, strong and brave as boys and that they can also be leaders in our world.

This is a wonderful way to introduce young children to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her story of persistence, hard work, and determination is inspirational and should be shared with boys and girls alike. I especially appreciated the pages dedicated to her friendship with Justice Scalia, as it served as an important reminder that disagreement can be done respectfully and even with friends.

I absolutely love this book. I am in college to be an Elementary School teacher, and all of the students I've read this to have found it enjoyable and educational. Students of all ages, elementary to college, loved the illustrations and the no nonsense storytelling. I recommend it to everyone.

This book was excellent. I use it to teach perseverance and over coming adversity in my 4th grade classroom.

My sons brought this in on their snack day to share with their preschool class. A couple weeks later, one of the little girls went out of her way to tell me she loved this book and wants to be a girl judge when she grows up too.

One the best books I've read in a long time. It teaches important lessons about dissent and how it can be both handled without hostility and bring about change all while educating kids on the life of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. What a fantastic buy!

Great story and illustrations for boys and girls alike. Heck, this is a good book for adults, too. It’s tough to read through the prejudice she faced, but it’s a reality we can all fight with information and action.

I bought this for my 2-year old nephew. I figure it is never too early to make him a little feminist. I'm giving it to him for Christmas and I'm sure he won't appreciate it for a few more years - but it makes me smile and the message is fantastic. Very well done book.

This is a good non-fiction picture book that introduces kids to the concept of prejudice and standing up for what’s right. My 5 year old and I both enjoyed reading it.

Great book to provide real life history for my 8 year old grandson. We both learned about RBG and how the court system works.

This is an amazing book that tells about the life of Run Bader from childhood, to her life as a supreme court justice. It does an excellent job showing that while we can disagree, and have strong opinions, we can still be friends.

This is a wonderful book! I read it to my 6 and 9 year olds tonight. They loved it. Thank you Debbie Levy for writing such a wonderful book for introducing children to the courts and to women's rights. I can't recommend this book enough!

The book was purchased for my grand daughter who is six. She read the book with help from my daughter-in-law. My grand daughter asked a lot of questions so it maybe the last time I'll be allowed to buy books for her unless I read them to her although my daughter-in-law also loved reading the book.
