Bill Peet is one of my favorite kids book authors. I read these as a kid, got them for my kids, nieces and nephews and have put away a set for for my grandchildren someday. The stories and characters are always well designed and draw kids in. The illustrations are bright and colorful while still being somewhat simplistic giving them a lovable cartoon appearance. The stories have great moral and life lessons told in a fun way. These stories have stood the test of time and have been loved by many in my family

This book is delightful. As always, the illustrations are great and the story line is as cute as can be. It shows Hubert has many friends, but only one that is a "true" friend - willing to take risk for him. A very funny story that children able to stick with a story will find engaging.

I have taught for 44 years from 1 to 9th grade and have used Bill Peet's books in every grade. They are also great for storytelling.

The kids (5yo and 3yo) really like this book and I admit it is one of my favorites. The copy we had was given to me when I was 7, and after that wear and tear, and that given by my kids, I purchased a new copy. I'm always a sucker for great stories in rhyme.

This is the same classic story that you might have read yourself as a kid. Although not an original print, it is nice to be able to buy these books for the next generation to enjoy.

What a fun book. It came in excellent condition. We had read this story several years ago, and couldn't remember the name of it. When we found it, we were very excited. It is a great story about friends helping one another, and has a great moral.

This is a wonderful story! I use this in teaching pre-k literature enrichment. Learning can be adapted for all elementary grade levels. Students discuss fire safety, wild animals, animals of Africa, geography, Being proud, feelings, friendship. Students make paper bag puppets of the characters and act out the story! The students have animal crackers for snack and play with wild animal figures.

Precious! And impressive--the whole book is one long rhyming poem. My children really liked it!

I used to read this book when I was young with my siblings, now we're grown and reading it to our kids. Funny story, a bit long- but when you add different voices along the way- holds kids attention. My 3 year old enjoys this one!

We have quoted this book in so many of our life situations. It teaches such great personality qualities that are used to help others.

Fun book!

Great story to read and enjoy with kids. We love the characters facial expressions. We have a few neighbors we have labeled "Mrs. Hornbill" over the years. Anytime someone starts making excuses we add in a few from Bill Peet. Delightful author.

This is one of the best children's books ever. It speaks to the children, rhymes similar to A Zeuss book but vocabulary is very interesting. Bill Peets' books were part of my children's growing up. I ordered reently so that my grandchildren could have them too.

Hello, this isn't a review but rather a question. I love this book! I recall there being two other books at my elementary school library that were similar. I always thought the artwork was the best and similar so I am thinking they were also by Bill Peet. Does anyone remember one with a crocodile (and tears?) and then I think there was one with an octopus (I recall it being purple). If anyone recalls these I'd love to find them. Thank you!

This is absolutely hilarious as a read-aloud, and the listeners will be engrossed in the creatively silly problem solving for the lion that lost his mane. Although it takes about 15 minutes to read this book aloud, the students will not forget through the meandering tale the problem that has to be solved to the lion's satisfaction.. Solving that problem creates another problem which is a delight to read about. The rhyming story is both a delight to the tongue and to the ear. Yes, it does remind one of Dr. Seuss, but Bill Peet is often an equal to Seuss in Illustrating and storytelling Picture Book (as a read-aloud): Grades 1-4

First published in 1959, this is one of more than 30 books written by the great Bill Peet. In it, a proud young lion loses his hair in an accident, and his animal friends come out to solve his problem. An elephant remembers a cure (crocodile tears), but no animal is brave enough to collect them except the clever elephant. However, the croc tonic works so too well, and a baboon is dispatched to trim the overgrown mane. The resulting haircut is a tribute to nonconformity: "You can search every jungle, each circus and zoo, From San Francisco to Timbuctoo But I doubt that you'll find though you look everywhere A lion whose main is so perfectly square ............So there!" The rhymes are delightful and the pictures are fun, relaxed, and absorbing! Peet worked as an illustrator, scriptwriter, and producer for Walt Disney, so you may see some Disney-esque touches in the expressive animal drawings. It's a great children's book (38 pages long). Recommended!

I loved Bill Peet books as a child, and I still really like them today. I recently bought the whole set so that my children will have them, and realized that I remember every character and every plot from 20+ years ago when my parents read them to me. They really made an impact on me. The illustrations are cute and captivating, the characters are engaging, the stories and well told, and each book has a meaning. There are few authors who can create such a fine balance in childrens' books.

A fantastically funny book. The drawings are amusing, and the rhyming text is memorable. My favorite part is the scene where the elephant asks who wants to come along to the swamp to help look for the crocodile tears. The other animals all come up with hilarious excuses, so the elephant ends up going alone. A useful introduction to real life, that. The text is a bit too long and complicated for preschoolers, unless you have a child with a long attention span. Better for children 6 and up.

Well I think that pretty much sums it up. I thought it so so so funny. Hubbert was a vain lion who due to his vanity lost his mane. And then some old crow/vulture-bird which is the town gossip finds out!! The only thing that could make the worst of the worst worser is having Mrs. Hornbill find out. Thus now he goes quickly from being the king of the forest to the shame of it. Not a good hair-day for Hubbert at all. I do not know of any other author that can capture kids and adults attention like Bill Peet. Yes!!! These are books that make parents look forward to story time as much as kids vs putting you to sleep trying to drone through it after a long tiring day.

Not Bill Peet's best work, but stil a good story. Hubert the Lion experiences a downfall when he loses his beautiful mane and is forced into hiding. A chivalrous elephant comes to his rescue by setting out on a difficult journey to retrieve the hair tonic that the Lion needs. But the fun just begins.

This is the book that taught me how to read! I was given an anthology of stories by Bill Peet, and this story was the one I remember loving the most! The rhymes are ryhthmical and fun! I remember it being easy enough to give me confidence with plenty of challenging new letter combinations to keep me learning. I have a vivid memory of stumbling over the word 'knee' and being frustrated that the old adage to 'sound it out' wasn't working. I am a lifelong voracious reader, and I give this book a great deal of credit for that.

This is an amazing book. When I was born in England, this book was bought for my older brothers entertainment, then in my time I read it, then my younger sister as well. As we grew up, we each retained the ability to recite bits and pieces of the now familiar tome. In that it was so special to each of us, we all tried to lay some claim to ownership of the one original. So, I went and memorized it, and was granted the original by my siblings. Now I buy this book by the case, and give it out to raptured children (and adults) after recitations. This book never fails to amaze everyone whose been exposed to it! Too bad its so regularly out of print. Like right now which is why I'm writing this!

The Author Bill Peet has the gift to spark the imagination of all children. His stories are amazing. There are over 30 kids books by him and I recommend them all!

Bill Peet is one of my favorite kids book authors. I read these as a kid, got them for my kids, nieces and nephews and have put away a set for for my grandchildren someday. The stories and characters are always well designed and draw kids in. The illustrations are bright and colorful while still being somewhat simplistic giving them a lovable cartoon appearance. The stories have great moral and life lessons told in a fun way. These stories have stood the test of time and have been loved by many in my family

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my 6, 4, and 2 year olds after reading other reviews. It was a last minute purchase and I did not read prior to wrapping so I hoped they liked. Well they loved! Three months later it is still our number one read book and Mom enjoys too. Each age finds entertaining which is a very big Win in my book. This hilarious book was a favorite when my children were small. I can't wait to share it with my grandson! The rhythmic wording and absurd adventures poor Hubert has while regaining his lost mane always had us laughing.

This was one of my favorite books growingup. So i just had to get it for my kids. The also love it. They laugh at the brilliant writen story and love looking at the pictures. My 17 even laughed at the story as i read it to my 8 and 4 year olds. Great book.

And the vanity leads to... a thoroughly delightful story, with vanity, challenges, excuses, courage, service, and some laughs built in. Lots of fun. We love all things Bill Peet, and this is one of our very favorites.

Loved Bill Peet's books as a child. Now I'm reading them to my children and they are loving them.

This is a delightful story told brilliantly in rhyme... as good for the adults as the kids!

I read this book when I was a kid. I think it might have traumatized me. I really don't like hair and I always think that I'm going to get tangled up in it. Is that weird?

Bill Peet was an incredibly talented author and illustrator of children's books. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a writer's convention many years ago. He began his career at the Walt Disney studios where his skill approached Disney's. His books are whimsical, clever, and adventurous. The pictures are lush and full of fun. They engage youngsters, making them laugh, enchanting them with their surprise plot twists. The stories are timeless. I passed down my sons' Bill Peet stories to my grandchildren who loved them so much, they asked for more stories by him. So, I bought about a half dozen more Bill Peet books. These stories appeal to girls and boys, and grown ups enjoy reading them aloud to their kids. I suggest saving your copies even when your kids grow out of them - the next generation will love them too.

This is fun and well illustrated. I bought it for a dear friend of mine who is 4 and a half. It's been read at bedtime multiple times--the grown-ups like it. Bill Peet has a great sense of humour and a nice touch with a coloured pencil. I recommend.
