This is a delightful coffee table book, full of tongue in cheek humor. It might even be readable fare for kids. But you will have to skip over a page or two. But my mother-in-law would have been terribly insulted by a picture of a naked gnome or two, especially a naked lady with exposed breasts (come where the feeding of infants gnomes and physiology of gnomes is humorously discussed. I had this book when I was a kid in the late '70s, so I had to track down a copy for my little kids. This book is marvelous. Whimsical and classic illustrations throughout and great stories about gnomes (and other mythical creatures) that truly spark the imagination. The authors and artists approach the topic of gnomes as if they are real, and this book describes every aspect of their secret lives. We love it.

This book is amazing. I am so glad I sprung for the collector's edition, it was totally worth it. I remember a friend of mine had this when I was a child and she would get mad because I would want to come over and just stare at her book. It is delightful to have it again and is every bit as adorable, beautiful, and clever as I remember. The prints included are stunning, I have three hung on my walls already. My only complaint is a small one; the prints are a really weird size, they fit in an 8x10 frame but they are slightly too narrow. Yes, I realize I can just have them professionally framed and matted and this will solve the problem. Hence the very small complaint.

However, when it arrived, without its dust jacket, I was dismayed to find it in rough condition. There were Children’s scribble drawings inside the cover & the binding cracked as soon as I opened it. I won’t be returning as this is meant as a birthday/Xmas present & I fear shipping this late in the game but under any other circumstances I’d be exchanging at the very least. Happy to have this fantastic book, sad my search for a deal led to such a state of affairs.

Well not only did she find it amazing but so did I. (Yeah I read it before giving it to her) A few things about this book: a) It has amazing illustrations. The pictures make you want to smile or at least I did. b) Has myths about gnomes which I enjoyed c) It is written like a research book on a real species. (I loved this approach) If you are into gnomes fairy tales or just awesome fantasy pictures I highly recommend this book. A+++

Being Dutch now living in Canada I grew up with the Dutch original of this book. Not long ago we were talking about the original Dutch book "Leven en Werken van de Kabouter" and the superb drawings. After that conversation I needed to know if this book was available in English to surprise my wife. And sure it was and ordered. The book is as good as I can remember, however odd to see a childhood memory in a different language. The drawings draw you into the life of the kabouter (gnome) and the way it is written and drawn, you would think Rien and Wil got paid several visits by the gnomes themselves. Absolutely a must-buy for young and old. if you have ever put a gnome in your garden or christmas tree, this is a book you must have! You'll look different at gnomes from then on!

We are not entirely the "gnome" type type of people; however, since our 10 yr old decided to be a gnome out of the blue last Halloween, I decided to get him and his younger brother these similar hardbound editions on their birthdays -- one has the traditional red cover, another blue -- just for kicks! I am not sure it really counts as sexual content. It had a couple of naked gnomes and talked about reproduction. This book was a present for my neice who is a gnome nut and she loves it. She bookmarks pages for some reason so she can go back to them. I think she believes gnomes are real. I don't think gnomes are real but I am sure House elves are real and they like to play jokes and hide your keys, your remote, your hairbrushes and when you reach your final straw they put those things in plain sight where you know you have looked. So I am looking forward to a book on house elves!

This is a great book for any gnome lover. Actually, this was the guy that started it all with his amazing drawings. It's a great book to leave out when company comes. We keep ours in our cabin in Washington state and I always look at it with my son when we go there and we pretend the little gnomes are running around in our forest. This is the book that the show David the Gnome was based off of as well.

Other people have an "Elf on the Shelf" for Christmas. We have a gnome. He left this book for our children, and as it was written as a factual field journal, it has greatly added to the magic. I will need to purchase an additional one so that each will have one when they grow up and move away.

This book was one of those things that I wanted as a little girl and didn't get; a long time of fondly remembering the book I saw once at a little bookstore. Now that I'm a big girl and got a copy for myself, the deluxe edition didn't disappoint at all! The book was newer than new! If it wasn't, I would not have given it. It was a gift, along with the gnome I purchased, people thought I spent more than the limit for the gift exchange, but with the Gnomes Deluxe Collector's Edition being used, I didn't. the receiver couldn't wait to get it home and read it! It even had the inserts in the back. Great volume!! Thank you for making me look good!

The book is beautiful, with wonderful illustrations and content. Unfortunately, despite buying a new copy, it arrived covered in gray and black scuff marks, with tears on the paper jacket. That's pretty ridiculous, all things considered.

The Gnomes book came in excellent condition even though it was previously owned. Jacket was in very good condition and will make the perfect gift for my book loving friend.

This is the wonderful book David the Gnome is based on. As soon as I found out my wife used to own it I knew what her stocking stuffer was going to be! I'm so excited to get her anything that will bring a smile to her face, and give her joy!

For instance, I didn't want to say that it has sexual context, because honestly it doesn't. But my mother-in-law would have been terribly insulted by a picture of a naked gnome or two, especially a naked lady with exposed breasts (come where the feeding of infants gnomes and physiology of gnomes is humorously discussed. Everything in this is humorous. If you have friends who into gnomes in their yards decor, then this would be a great gift. The art is on every single page is the book discusses every conceivable subject you could ever think of. My favorite chapter was on relationships with other animals. It's a large and heavy book. I would tell you the number of pages, but the authors didn't bother to number them.

I can't say enough good things about this book. The illustrations alone are worth the price. Some of the photos were so incredibly heart warming I could frame them! The author goes into great details regarding the gnome life and attitudes. I especially liked the stories at the end of the book and the section on how gnomes think about the world we live in and humans in general. The art in this book is very well done and realistic (for gnomes, anyway) the back story is very entertaining and this used copy came with several prints in the back sleeve! The book is coffee table sized and fun to read and look at if the real world is too much!

I love this book. I remember when I was a child my mom had and I loved to look at it. I got it for a great price the only problem is I had to tape the bottom of the binding as it was kind of falling apart. The inside is in good shape and the pictures are amazing.

I bought a second-hand copy of Wil Huygen's "Gnomes" as a gift. I had read the book before and knew the recipient would love it. Huygen's fictional anthropology of a legendary race is delightful and the illustrations have set the pattern for our understanding of what a gnome ought to look like.

We are not entirely the "gnome" type type of people; however, since our 10 yr old decided to be a gnome out of the blue last Halloween, I decided to get him and his younger brother these similar hardbound editions on their birthdays -- one has the traditional red cover, another blue -- just for kicks! A nice departure from all things modern, great book filled with wonderful illustrations, lots of pages related to ecology and forest stewardship, and of course all the imaginative gnome lore you could imagine. (We do keep it on the top shelf for display, out of our preschooler's reach, as there are a few pages with those bizarre other creatures, ie trolls ... and share the other 95% of it with him accordingly). I have been wanting this book for years. I am very happy to finally get it. Now, I can learn more about gnomes.

I would tell you the number of pages, but the authors didn't bother to number them.

I received the Gnome book in 1979 and have since passed it on to my 7 year old son. He loves it. We are big into Harry Potter and fairies, and all things magical and mystical. I love that this ties in environmentalism, humanitarianism and imagination! We recently purchased this for a dear friend whom, I suspect, loves it as much as we do! A real classic with beautiful text and illustrations. The Complete Book of Gnomes is also in our library and is a perfect follow up to this.

This book brings me back to my childhood. My husband remembered me saying how much I loved this book and bought it for me for Valentines Day. The illustrations are awesome, the text is intriguing. I will be showing this book to our kids, despite the fact that there is some nudity. They are gnomes for goodness sake, not playboy models - Get real people!
