“Stunning, dark, exhilarating and disturbing, Murata's collection of contemporary Japanese comic art gives an inside view of the explosive work happening there today.” ―Publishers Weekly

This full-color collection compiles more than twenty years of comics, cover art, promotional art and character designs from legendary Japanese artist Range Murata. The oversized release contains dozen gate-fold posters, and several comics from the ROBOT anthology along with renditions of each of his magazine covers. This is the most definitive collection of Murata's work so far.

Range Murata is best known as a character designer for Last Exile and Blue Submarine no. 6.

For pedophiles only, creepy. Do not buy.

I purchased this hoping for a cool anime art book (I have many) but this book is nothing but sexualizing little girls and I find it extremely creepy. I literally had to throw it away minutes after opening because not only was it sickening but if anyone ever saw the contents and I had it out like a coffee table book they would probably assume you are a sick pedophile. This is the kind of sick stuff Jeffrey Epstein would have liked. It took it's well earned place right in my garbage just minutes after flipping thru it in disgust.

Great Art Book.

I first noticed Range Murata's work via the anime, "Last Exile" and "Blue Submarine No. 6" and was immediately hooked on his work. I don't have many personal favorite Japanese Illustrators, but Range Murata is definitely one of them. His Steampunk aesthetic is perhaps one of the best I have ever seen and his characters have such innocence to them, but that's just personal preference. Futurelog contains a lot of his editorial work, especially from the anthology, Robot that he edited a few years ago. There are some small 2-3 page comics and quite a few stunning folded double page illustrations. Though a bit of warning that a lot of Range Murata's characters look a lot younger they probably might be so in my opinion, some of his work to some may come off as a bit troubling. There is a fair bit of Nudity but nothing pornographic. Quite a few of his anime work from Last Exile, Blue Submarine No.6 and Shangrila is also present in the book along with book covers he did, most recently of Attack on Titan franchise. Though the book is softcover, it is still solid and heavy enough to be a fine addition to any art fan. So, if you are a fan of Range Murata but cannot afford his Robot Series (which sadly is out of print and goes for insane prices on second hand market) then Futurelog is your best option to own his work.

Wonderfully Presented

First off, the majority of illustrations in this book are of younger individuals, so I wouldn't recommend for someone who is not familiar with Range Murata's work or any anime/manga for that matter. You should view this book as what it is meant to be: a beautiful collection of illustrations by an artist who is world renown and rightfully so. There is a sense of wonder and enchantment to his work, even in the most ordinary of activities taking place. There are several illustrations that are more realistic than Murata's other drawings. They serve as proof that he is a classically trained artist who had to learn the fundamentals before entering the anime industry. This understanding of how clothe moves in the wind or how light reflects off metal is then carried over to his more stylized work evoking empathy and believability to each illustration. Again, you have to view this book with an open mind. As an artist myself, I was able to look past some of the questionable subject matter and appreciate so much more than I expected. Hope you experience the same.
