I started following Sam Turnbull and her blog "It doesn't taste like chicken" about a year ago. I found her on social media and was mesmerized by not only the creations she featured but her wonderful, bright and happy personality that I challenge anyone not to love! I tried a couple of her recipes and they were an immediate hit so I joined one of her Facebook cooking classes. Everything I made, without exception, was an instant hit with everyone who tried it. Her tips and tricks were invaluable as well. I knew I had to have one of her cookbooks and what better way to start than with 101 Everyday Comfort Food Favorites, Veganized (and tasting significantly better than the non-vegan dishes they replaced). This book is now the only cookbook I use, period. The recipes are so amazing and easy to follow that I will definitely be buying more of her cookbooks in the future. Every single dish I've made has turned out perfectly and as stated above significantly better than what I used to make. This book makes it a sin NOT to become a vegan JUST based on how good everything tastes! Her marinara recipe is my forever go to recipe. Better than any store bought sauce and ready in 30 minutes with just a few simple ingredients, you absolutely can't go wrong with this sauce. It doubles nicely as a pizza sauce as well. I've tried many others (all great) but last night was the pièce de résistance, I made her lighter vegan version of alfredo sauce using cauliflower and it was THE richest, THE creamiest, THE absolute tastiest alfredo I've ever had at home or any restaurant! OMG I will be dreaming of this sauce forever and so much better for you that the whole cream and butter version! Topped with her vegan parmesan topping, you'd be blown away! I'm guessing you get the idea. Buy this book, like even if you aren't planning to become vegan. It's so good your meatless Mondays will never be the same and may spill into Tuesday (dare I say Wednesday?). Sam is without a doubt a genius in the kitchen.
Very pleased
My book was just as described -- very good - like new. I am pleased.
Who knew vegan food can be so beautiful!
Easy, beautiful, various, delicious and healthy. All you want your food to be!
Excellent Condition
I never usually leave book reviews and I wanted to take the time for this special order. Seller violet33 did an amazing job. My book arrived in cute wrapping paper with a bow and all edges completely intact. I can appreciate someone who goes above and beyond for customer service. Regarding the book itself I already own the e-version and have nothing but good things to say. Great experience and product all around!
Sam Turnbull can do no wrong!
Oh my gosh, as a new vegan, Sam Turnbull is an absolute treasure!! I found her blog just a week before this cookbook was released and I was instantly hooked, not just by her and her excellent writing, but also by her recipes! I have always been a very picky eater so going vegan always seemed incredibly daunting to me. I never thought I'd be able to find enough foods that I liked. But thanks to Sam and this book, I'm not scared anymore! Now I know that anything you can eat, you can eat vegan! Now focusing on the cookbook: it is fabulous! It is written in Sam's usual adorably fun style. Every recipe is accompanied by a beautiful full-page photo. Even though I'm a very picky eater, this cookbook has me excited to branch out and try new things! And I absolutely love that it's not just a strict "cookbook". She also gives advice on grocery shopping as a vegan, what's good to keep stocked at your house, replacements for common non-vegan cooking ingredients, and even recipes for staples like vegan cheeses, mayo, whipped cream, etc! None of the ingredients are super crazy or rare, I've been able to find almost everything at my local Kroger. The only thing they haven't carried so far is white miso paste which I was able to find at Walmart! So obviously pretty easy ingredients. And the recipes themselves are truly fuss-free! So far I've made the banana bread, chocolate chip cookies, and the braised tomato burrito (I can't remember her exact name for it.) I don't like banana bread but I make it for my boyfriend who said that it was the best banana bread I've ever made - way better than any non-vegan version. The chocolate chip cookies were absolutely to die for, they were gone the same day I made them! Finally, the burrito was honestly not quite as good as I was expecting but I think that's honestly mainly a mental thing because I was freaking myself out over the tofu! And when I say "not as good", I still ate the entire burrito, I think I may just tweak that one next time I try to make it and see if I can't somehow make it more to my liking. I'm getting ready to make the vegan cheeses soon which is what I'm most excited about, because cheese is definitely my barrier food. Overall I would highly recommend this cookbook, whether you're a new vegan like me, have been one for years, or are maybe just interested in incorporating some more vegetables into your diet! It is a cookbook truly anyone can enjoy!
If you want easy, delicious recipes that appeal to even non-vegans, this is it!
I’ve always loved Sam’s recipes from her blog (her Peanut Thai Salad with Grilled Tofu, for example, is my favorite salad) so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed in her book. And boy, was I right! The recipes are for dishes that seem familiar to most people such as vegan versions of pizza, pasta dishes, blueberry muffins, scones, lemon meringue pie, and even creme brûlée, just to mention a very few (that I can’t wait to try). My husband is vegetarian but not vegan so I was hoping he would find these recipes delicious and so far, he has loved everything I’ve made. In the 9 short days I’ve had the book, I have prepared the Extra Banana-Y Banana Bread (so good but watch the bake time-I slightly over cooked mine though my husband says it is still the best he’s tasted), Best-Ever Waffles (recipe made enough that we froze half and reheated in the toaster oven the next day), Creamy Dreamy Coleslaw, Love Letter French Onion Soup, Absurdly Cheesy Broccoli Soup (delicious flavors-I thickened mine a bit more with potato flakes),Go-To Chickpea Salad, Caramelizd Onion Pizza, Veggie Fried Rice, My Family Favorite Tomato Sauce (made enough for a spaghetti dinner and plenty left over for the pizza recipes), Life-Changing Mozzarella, and Seriously Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies (my husband loved these). And you MUST check out the Carrot Dogs (totally amazing-I swear they taste just like veggie dogs, only better). But I’ve saved the best for last. Her Ah-Mah-Zing Peanut Butter Cookies are mouth-wateringly delicious). I have had to make them twice in one week due to popular demand. So far I have found all the recipes to be easy, accurate, and made with ingredients most vegans have on hand (such as LOTS of cashews) and best of all, appealing to those who aren’t hard-core vegans, such as my husband. As another bonus, all the recipes, have beautiful full-color pictures, so realistic that I found myself trying to wipe crumbs off one of the pages. Just can’t wait to cook my way through the entire book.
This is my absolute favorite vegan cookbook
I probably have 2-3 dozen vegan cookbooks, but this one blows them all away. I really don't understand the one-star reviews at all. They musn't have tried any of the recipes. I only received this cookbook yesterday, and in all fairness I have to say that I've only done one of the recipes myself. It was the "Ooh La La Pastry Wrapped Lentil Loaf". When I showed it to my husband, he said, "Oh, yeah, make that one!" It was fabulous and the flavor out of this world good. This recipe was not fuss free, but it was definitely worth the fuss. It makes 2 loaves, and the second can be kept frozen until the day you have company. Just thaw and pop into the oven for a quick but elegant meal. This is the most labor intensive recipe in Sam's book. Most everything else truly is fuss-free. I thing the best thing about this book is that I am excited to make everything in it...That's the worst thing about the book as well because it's hard to decide what to make next. Sam's recipes for basics are what every vegan needs. This nonsense about running to the store to buy vegan this and vegan that in order to cook fuss-free vegan meals is ridiculous. These basics take only minutes to prepare and they are better for you than the store-bought processed stuff. All in all, Sam's cook book is a real winner and so is her blog, "It doesn't taste like chicken". If you are unsure about spending money for her book, just visit her blog and you will receive dozens of free recipes to try which will convince you that money spent on her book is money well spent. Just so glad I bought this book!
Exactly what I was looking for!
This cookbook is amazing. First thing to know, you need a food processor. And a blender, and a place to get raw cashews. I have been trying to cut dairy out of my diet for the past couple of years but lacked some food replacements that I badly craved. Everything I want to eat I can find in this book, veganized. We have tried four recipes so far and they have all been amazing and a huge help in going dairy free full time. I only wish the dessert recipes used more oils rather than things like vegan butter. That can get really pricey! I suggest you look for recipes like the vegan chocolate chip cookies online with an oil base instead, you just have to pop them in the fridge for a bit to harden the dough and they're much less expensive to make. We did try her cookies and they're great! But they do take almost an entire package of Mykanos butter to make so I will go back to my old vegan cookie recipe next time. Besides this, she has some really solid recipes with mostly easy to acquire ingredients. I find this to be the best vegan cookbook I've ever owned as someone who wants to eat everything I did before, just vegan!
Definitely worth buying
Although I have a couple little qualms, I'm giving 5 stars because overall this is a really high quality vegan cookbook and I'm very glad I bought it. One of the first recipes I tried was her chickpea salad sandwich, which she says is her go-to lunch, so I was hoping it could replace my lunches that I used to eat before going vegan (I loved egg salad and chicken salad). But I didn't think I would be a huge fan because I don't like chickpeas all that much. But omg, this sandwich, I devoured it. It was SO GOOD. My qualms are small: one is that I think some of the recipes don't count as "fuss-free," like the creme brulee for example - I get that it's a pretty simple version, but come on, you need a creme brulee torch. Who has that? I would have left that out of this cookbook to make room for something that the majority of people can make. My other issue is with her baking recipes - Sam doesn't seem to use any kind of egg replacer, and this is a real problem! I don't know how she makes it work, but I tried two of her muffin recipes, and they totally fell apart, which is what happens when you don't use a binder. So then I tried it again and added my own egg substitutes (a powdered egg replacer and some apple sauce), and that did the trick. Overall, I recommend this book!
Amazing Cookbook!
I absolutely love this cookbook! My family is nowhere close to being vegans. My goal in getting this book was to ease my family towards a more plant-based lifestyle without shocking their tastebuds. Sam has great ideas that actually taste great! My teenage son literally lives on mac and cheese, ramen noodles and other freezer crap...it drives me nuts!! I came across her version of macaroni and cheese and decided to try it out on my teenage connoisseur. Wow! my picky eater actually liked it! He was shocked to learn it was good for him. Ok so this in it self had me sold but I wanted to try it out on the rest of the family so I made her cheese and broccoli soup and it was so creamy and delicious. Let me remind you this is all vegan so no cheese was in that meal BUT the texture and flavor had my family fooled. Love it! Plus, many recipes use items I already have in my pantry. I don't have to break the bank buying specialty items. Oh and a huge plus is the recipes are short and sweet so no sweating it out in the kitchen to prepare a fabulous meal. It also helps that each meal has a picture so you at least know how it's going to look in the end. I'm a visual person and this helps a lot.
