Frosty, the second book in the Morgan Horse series, continues the adventures of Heather Richardson and her horse Blackjack. In addition, the story introduces a new character, a rare gray Morgan named Frosty. Through Frosty, Heather realizes that not all horses are meant to be show ring stars. Although disappointed at first, she soon discovers that Frosty's real talent lies in the area of trail riding, and it isn't long before Heather loves this sport. She and Frosty become trail buddies and must learn to trust each other if they are to survive the woods of Vermont...

Wonderful book series

Sequel better than its predecessor, but still left us wanting

16-year old Heather earns $450 and her parents agree to match her $450 so she can buy a second horse. They let her go off to an auction with her college-aged friend, where she bids on and wins the auction of an ill-treated, skitterish Morgan mare for $800. Thus begins the sequel to "Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse", the second book in Ellen Feld's Morgan Horse Series. This book is a vast improvement over the first. The pacing is much improved, the writing far less awkward and repetitive, and the story elements are more varied and intriguing. However, it still lacks believability in places (e.g., a teen's parents let their daughter buy a horse without any oversight, as long as she doesn't spend more than $900?), and the finale is overwrought. I also was hoping it would include more information about the origins and unique characteristics of the Morgan breed, its historical and contemporary uses, etc., but was again disappointed. There is only a vague reference to Frosty's lineage, the fact that gray is not a common Morgan color, and a description of her extended trot. Like its predecessor, it also suffers from poor editing. Here is a sample of misspellings and incorrect punctuation: p. 6 "...a tall, lanky bay horse made it's way..." p.14-15 "If you're looking for a good reining horse...than start bidding!" p. 60 "Oh, no," whispered Laura to herself, "he's going to loose it." p. 95-96 "...and with lightening speed..." p. 192 "Another lightening flash appeared..." p. 194 "A few more close flashes of lightening..." p. 213 "Frosty, meanwhile had begun to breath louder." I find it distracting to read a book with so many errors. My 10-year old horse-crazy daughter's summation: "It was better than the first book, but still not worth the money. I couldn't believe her parents let her have two horses, and all the dumb things she did when she got lost." Apparently Heather is going to become a Morgan Horse breeder in the next book, since her parents let her buy a stallion (!) as her first horse. Unfortunately, my daughter and I aren't interested enough after the first two books to find out how that goes for her.

For any reader who owns a horse, has ever owned a horse or was once crazy about a horse.

The main character in this fascinating book is Heather Richardson. As the book opens, Heather and her friend Laura are attending a horse auction. Heather is in the market for anew horse to show and finds a Morgan mare that is the unusual color of grey that is apparently very rare in that breed. Heather is already the owner of Blackjack, another Morgan horse that she does show in the ring but, is on the lookout for another to train. The mare is not in very good shape and hasnot been very well taken care of. She does end up buying the sweet tempered horse and names her "Frosty" because of her coat color. Frosty's training doesn't go too well as she has trouble in the show ring. She cannot seem to follow Heather's instructions or she doesn't want to but, as luck would have it the horse seems to have a talent for trail riding and Heather starts training her for that. When Laura invites Heather on a three-day trail ride the girls and their horses start out with good humor and looking forward to a great three days. Things go well at first but start to slide downhill when Heather and Frosty get mixed up on the forest trail due to a heavy fog and get lost in thewoods. This great adventure tale is the second book in the author's Morgan Horse series and very true to life as there is an explanation for every move the horse and rider make and it helps the reader to put themselves in Heather's place during her trials and tribulations and her good times, too. Any reader who owns a horse or has ever owned a horse or even was crazy about a horse will be able to understand all the terminology concerning training a show horse or just loving this beautiful creature. A definite keeper!!!

A Fun, Vivid Adventure!

I begin with: For those who missed the first book in this series…go back and read it, because although these are standalone tales, the characters, storylines and stunning horses are a must for kids AND adults to enjoy. And, yes, the writing is so lovely, and the author such an obvious aficionado when it comes to these noble creatures, that they literally jump off the page. Heather Richardson is the young girl this tale wraps around. And at the very beginning, she and her friend, Laura, are knee-deep in an auction. Heather is very excited because she is looking for a brand new horse and finds a very unusual grey mare among the mix. This Morgan is very rare because of its color, and Heather is already a lover of Morgan horses, seeing as that she already owns one named Blackjack. Unfortunately, although this horse is beautiful in color, she is also out of shape a bit and whoever took care of her originally did not do a very good job. Heather falls in love, however, and names the mare, Frosty. The training isn’t simple where Frosty is concerned; the horse has trouble following directions when it comes to working in the show ring. What Frosty does seem to have a penchant for is trail-riding, and since everything happens for a reason, when Heather’s buddy invites her to come on a trail ride that will last three days, Heather and Frosty are up for it. But the adventure and suspense come forth when, during the ride, the team of Morgan and Owner get lost in a heavy fog that has them a bit scared and confused as they go deeper and deeper into the forest…with only each other to rely on. This Morgan Horse series is so realistic and extremely vivid that readers will find themselves out there on the trail (or wishing they were), helping Heather and Frosty find their way to safety and loving the friendship that is built along the way. Whether a horse lover, owner, breeder, or “wannabe” of all those things, this is a book that will not only bring fun and adventure into your life, but will also allow for better understanding when it comes to the ins and outs of horse training. I can’t wait for the third one

This is an exciting book that all young horse lovers will be captivated by!

Ellen F. Feld, award-winning author, equine journalist and phenomenally passionate horse lover, once again reaches out to the hearts and dreams of the teenaged horse loving set with her newly revised book, "FROSTY: The Adventures of a Morgan Horse." Laura and Heather were best friends. Best friends know everything about each other, but for the life of her Laura couldn't figure out why the heck her pal would ever want to bid on such a bedraggled looking horse. Heather already had a great Morgan horse named Blackjack, but another one, a dirty mare with burrs in her tail no less, was just too much. "What? Are you crazy? " Heather heard her friend, but she heard this little mare calling out to her more. There was something very special about this little gray gal and she knew it. She just knew it. The bidding was on and her stomach was in knots. Going once, going twice . . . Frosty was hers Heather Richardson had high hopes for Frosty. She was anxious for her to be her second show horse, but soon found that her new purchase was clueless when it came to commands. She was gravely disappointed to find out that Frosty had been "ruined" by an unscrupulous and cruel trainer. Coupled with the fact that Blackjack had a mysterious illness her problems and discouragement continued to mount. Her rare gray Morgan was useless But was she? Heather, much to her delight found that Frosty just might have the makings of a great trail horse. With this new discovery the girls had been anxiously looking forward to going on the Mountain View Trail Ride, a three day ride in the woods of Vermont. When they arrived at their destination they were raring to go. Heather and Frosty were doing fine until a quirk of fate separated them from the rest of the riders. Lost in a lingering fog and separated from the group Heather became fearful when all of a sudden then was an accident. Frosty, desperately trying to lunge out of a swampy area, awkwardly jumped forward. Heather lost her balance. To her horror she found herself trapped under her mare! Reading Frosty instantly transported me back to my childhood days and returned to me the wonderment and awe I used to feel when I'd hide under the covers with a flashlight, turn page after page of a favorite book and read to my heart's delight. This is one of those rare timeless books that can be enjoyed and read by all age levels. It's very easy to see why this is a Children's Choice award winner because this reviewer thinks it's a winner too!

Great Book for Tweens!

This second book in the series begins with Heather, our leading teen horse-loving protagonist, at a horse auction. While there, she spots an unusual looking but rather shy mare in a corral, near an anxious and excitable show-offy horse. Heather eventually coaxes the mare to come to her, where the two establish a connection.Later, Heather buys the horse, only to discover the horse just might be a rare gray Morgan. Heather calls the horse Frosty, after her gray and frosted coloring, and once she brings her home and cleans her up, she falls in love. Unfortunately, Frosty knows nothing of training for showing, and worse, was likely abused or at the very least mistreated by her previous owner. It's up to Heather to train and prepare this horse, and she learns a lesson in patience doing so. She also learns that not all horses are made to be prize-winning show horses. Then, on a fateful ride, there is an accident, and Frosty spooks. I won't go any further so as to not spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the book, but Heather fears for her life and this is a big turning point in the book as well as for Frosty and Heather together. There are multiple lessons to learn in this book for pre-teens and teens reading Frosty. Readers learn the value of patience, acceptance of each person (or horse) for their natural talents instead of trying to push someone or something into pre-assumed labels, and also we learn to accept disappointment and turn it into something better, how to set aside expectations and let trust and talent shine through. Cons: It's a relatively well-written story, though there are minor grammatical issues that as an adult I'd prefer to see improved, since children learn to write from what they read. However, these issues are minor and do not interfere with the pleasure and enjoyment of the story. Also, the characters seems to tell the story in the dialogue, and this gets a little tedious at times, because it feels unrealistic to have the characters telling the reader things that should probably be in the descriptive text. Lastly, though also minor, while it's understandable that a teen girl who works with and handles horses in the capacity that Heather does would have more responsibility in this area than some teens might, it seems Heather makes many grown-up decisions, including purchasing a horse at auction, without ANY adult intervention or supervision. To me, that also seemed slightly unrealistic. Pros: It's a good story, with several good lessons to be learned. It's entertaining, and I believe it will keep most pre-teen, teen/tween girls reading and turning pages, especially any girl who has ever dreamed of owning or caring for a horse. It provides some realistic expectations about horse care and how much time and attention and devotion taking care of a horse really means, something many girls who dream of owning a horse probably don't consider. It also provides some great horse-related vocabulary that might be new to young readers, stretching their reading skills but not so much that it's difficult to read and understand if readers don't know the terms. The cover art, while muted in color and vibrancy, is pretty. I'd say the book is more for the middle-grade fiction reader, starting around third or fourth grade, best for sixth-eighth grade. By high school, the book is likely too 'young' for teen readers. Overall, a quality book that I'd recommend for tween/teens. The author provided me a review copy in order to write this review, but the opinions of the book are my own and no compensation has been provided in exchange for this review.

Wonderful Morgan Horse Book Series!

My 11-year-old daughter loved all of the books in the Morgan Horse Series. She typically prefers to listen to audio books, but after finding the first two books at a library sale and having me read the first chapter out loud to her, she took the books and finished them on her own quickly. We then purchased the remaining books in the series, and she could not wait to read each one. We are so thankful for this wonderful series for horse lovers!

Great choice for any animal or horse loving teens.

Great choice for any animal or horse loving teens. This book draws you in from the first chapter; with anticipation you hope that Heather can buy the beautiful gray Morgan Horse, and if she does, what will the horse be like? It's a wonderful story of love between an animal and her human, and what listening to your animal can tell you. I also loved that Blackjack is still a vital part of the story, and his mysterious illness keeps the reader coming back for more. I appreciated that Ellen Feld researched and made sure that her terminology of the horses illness was accurate. All the way to the end I was intrigued and entertained.

Well written and easy to read

These books are a great read for any young equestrian. I loved them growing up, and still do! I passed on my copies, but am seriously considering purchasing another set to have for when my niece is older. If you have a horse loving kid in your life, they will love these books!
