In 1963, Enzo Ferrari let it be known that he might be willing to sell his firm. Ford Motor Company, looking to upgrade its image, sent emissaries to Italy to arrange a corporate marriage between the two automakers. But after laborious negotiations, Ferrari got cold feet, and Ford was left standing at the altar. Henry Ford II - the autocratic CEO known as the Deuce - took the rebuff as a personal insult. "If that's the way he wants it, we'll go out and whip his ass," he growled. Thus began the biggest and most expensive assault on Le Mans the sport had ever seen.
Because support for program came from the top of the corporate totem pole, Ford lavished unprecedented resources on the groundbreaking Ford GT. Only the best would do - the best drivers, the best designers, the best engineers, the best team managers. The cast of characters included legends such as Carroll Shelby, Dan Gurney, Phil Remington, Ken Miles, John Wyer, A.J. Foyt, John Holman, Bruce McLaren, Eric Broadley and Phil Hill. Ford GTs finished 1-2-3 at Le Mans in 1966 and followed up that win with an even-more-dominant all-American victory the next year. Ford GT40s also won Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. By the time the Deuce retired from sports car racing, he had indeed whipped Ferrari's ass. In so doing, Ford also established the template that's been used ever since by just about every manufacturer that's created a big-time factory racing program.
Ford GT: How Ford Silenced the Critics, Humbled Ferrari and Conquered Le Mans celebrates the 50th anniversary of Ford's historic sweep of the podium in 1966. Author Preston Lerner details the program's progress from ground zero to the pinnacle of the motorsports world. The book covers the personalities and the politics as well as the technical nuances of the bad-boy V-8-powered prototypes that changed the face of road racing. Meanwhile, Shelby American and Ford Motor Company photographer Dave Friedman's iconic images bring the cars and the people who raced them to life.

Excellent History on Ford GT
This is a big book with lots of pictures telling the true story of Ford's desire to beat and success in beating Ferrari at Le Mans in 1965 & 1966. It's big so hard to hold and read. May need to read it resting on a table. It provides insight into racing, in general, how people recognize and handle challenges so there is a broader educational thing going on here. For me, the min-1960s do not seem that long ago but it was almost 55 years and reading tis story tells you also a little about how auto technology has advanced and how much trial & error was a part of technological development even 55 years ago. This is a good read if you are interested in the Ford GT or automobile development in general.
A very good book for readers wanting to learn the story and politics behind the Ford GT.
I have about every book written about the Ford GT, both factual and in fiction. There is very little that I don't know about the Ford GT and the story of how it materialized. Yet, I really enjoyed this book. For anyone that wasn't around during the Ford GT years, this is the book to read to get up to speed. And for the people like me, it still is good reading. I learned some from the book and it brought back a lot of facts that have faded from my memory. I highly recommend this book.
Eyecatching, informative book. Great addition to one's automotive library.
Delivered on time as promised, new in original plastic wrapper. Pleased with book, the text, photos, cover, etc. However I am once again upset at the lackluster packaging Amazon affords my purchases, even after I have repeatedly requested for more care. This book arrived with absolutely no protection other that the box it arrived in,...loosely bouncing around to dent the upper book corners. Crushed construction paper would have alleviated this at minimal cost. I will keep this in mind in any future purchases from Amazon.
Most complete history of the Ford GT
Very interesting and informative. Covers the entire Ford GT program from start to finish, why they started the program, why they ended the program and how they did it. This actually is a large picture book with an accompanying story. My only complaint is that the pictures sometimes don't match with the story on certain pages, but it is a very complete history and it includes quotes and interviews which were new to me. This is the most complete history of the Ford GT and it answered several questions that had nagged at me for many years. If you were a big fan of the Ford GT-40, MK. II and MK. IV like I was then you will enjoy this book.
Very good book!
As the owner of a 2019 Ford Mustang GT (yes, with 6-speed lol) I promise you will enjoy this book if you like Fords, Shelby, racing or racing history! The author does a really good job explaining the history of Lemans and Ford vs. Ferrari. The movie is good of course but the book has much more depth and facts and is at least as exciting to me. Get this book! You will enjoy it for sure.

Fascinating and detailed account of this effort by Henry Ford II to embarrass Enzo Ferrari at his own game. A wealth of photographs, and a lot of biographical info on the principals involved, the ones who made it happen. A highly recommended read.
Very enjoyable book. I learned a lot
Great read on the background between Ford and Ferrari. Many period photos in the factory, pits, racing and testing. If you’re a car development fan or racing fan this is an enjoyable book.
A good addition to my GT40 library
A good addition to my GT40 library, unfortunately though, as expected there are too many photos seen before published in the other GT40 books.
Good book - great
I liked this book, I actually bought it as a birthday present for myself. And I’m pleased with the present I received. Great pictures of the sixties cars And interesting well written story. I look forward to the Ford vs Ferrari movie coming in a few weeks.

This is a big book celebrating Ford's historical triumph in world class sports car racing, a shining moment for US auto enthusiast.
Great selection of vintage photographs.
Even though I have read and know the story very well I found this book to be excellent. It is different than Ron Spain’s book, but is very well detailed. It is a must have if you are a Ford GT 40 nut like I am.
Excellent source
One of the most comprehensive books written on the GT 40 with many good pictures, both color & B&W
Great read!
Good history
Great book.
Wonderful book with great photographs as well as a lot of information.
Another Ford GT book?
I solid addition to my automotive history library. It doesn't have much for color photography which is appropriate for the time period. I like that it came shrink wrapped to protect it from damage.
Great book. Great story. Well Told.
I am reading this for the second time. Great job. Thank you.
Great History of Ford's historic win over Ferrari at LeMans

First-Rate!
An important book for any lover of the Ford GT and the story behind its development.
Great story and outstanding photos
What really makes this book is Dave Friedman's photographs and the quotes with many of the principals that were involved in the first Ford GT program. It's a great story of ego, innovation, engineering, operational excellence and persistence in the world of auto racing.
Great book
Bought this for my father for Christmas after we saw Ford vs Ferrari. Great book with plenty of awesome pictures.
Wonderful book full of era correct photographs.
The book is high quality, heavy paper, and full of wonderful pictures from the era. Written well in a non-pedantic voice.
The story behind the movie.
For more context and the larger story, this is a fascinating read.
Grandson was happy with the gift.
He loved the book, poster and was excited.

I came, I saw, I conquered: Ford style!
Best Ford GT book ever written! Full facts, details, and many photos illustrate the true story how Ford beat the Europeans at their own game. Simply outstanding!
Great book full of racing history.

Great book, crazy fast shipping!!
Amazing book, my husband and father both loved it!!

My guy loved this book
Good gift
This was a gift for my uncle, and he loved it.
While this is a good factual account of Ford finally winning Le Mans
While this is a good factual account of Ford finally winning Le Mans, along with great photographs, I give it only four stars out of five because there is a 5-star book out there that tells the real story, the whole story, and the story behind the story in a very gripping, suspenseful way. The book has the unlikely title "Go Like Hell" and was published in 2009 by A.J. Baime. When I ordered this book my expectations were not high, as the author was unknown to me and the title, "Go Like Hell", somehow did not seem appropriate. However it far exceeded my expectations. I will quote one of the reviewers, Art Evans of Vintage Racecar, whose comments echo my own. He said "This is truly the very best book about racing I have ever come across. Even though it's about real events, it reads like a novel". The subtitle of the Ford GT book contains the phrase "how Ford...humbled Ferrari..." This makes the book sound like a Ford propaganda piece. Those of you who know the whole story know that Ford, in the person of Henry II, had his ass handed to him in 1964 and 1965 as Ferrari finished 1-2-3 both years, winning Le Mans for the 5th and 6th years in a row while all of the Fords failed to finish. Sports Illustrated described the 1965 race as "Murder Italian style". Ford had spent 6 million dollars on the 1965 race alone (about 50 million in today's dollars) and was going to abandon the project if they failed again in 1966. Of course they did not fail in 1966 but it was not a blowout as some would have you believe. At the end of 6 hours, Ferrari was placed 1-2, even with their 3.3 liter engines against the 7.0 liter Fords. The rest of course is history. Unfortunately, Ken Miles, who had done all the development work on the car for Ford, was cheated out of a victory by the Ford "suits". He was driving the #1 Ford and had more than a lap lead in the closing part of the race and was ordered to slow down and let the other Fords catch up so they could all cross the finish line in tandem. Apparently, this was Henry II's way of giving the middle finger to Enzo Ferrari. Miles complied and the officials ruled that Bruce McLaren had won, as his car qualified slower than Miles, and thus started 20 feet further back and so had traveled 20 feet further over the 24 hour race. In summary, I would recommend both books but read "Go Like Hell" first, for the story, and enjoy "Ford GT" for the photos, facts & data.
Incredible History of the Ford GT!!!
This book is a wealth of history both in text and photographs. I just got it and am already deep into reading it. The only fault I came up with, is the placement of the photograph of the Ford GT40’s finishing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of LeMans....the photo is placed between pages 126 & 127....the 2nd & 3rd place cars fall right in the crease of the book! I can’t believe the publisher would botch the placement on one of the most iconic photographs in Motorsport history!
Ford GT:How Ford Silenced The Critics,Humbled Ferrari and Conquered Le Mans.
Ford GT:How Ford Silenced The Critics,Humbled Ferrari and Conquered Le Mans. I Knew I had to have the book when I saw the title specifically Humbled Ferrari although I recall differently that the titled included Embarrassed Ferrari?Perhaps the change was for legal reasons or not to offend the Prancing Horse Tifosi.Regardless,There have been many books done on the Ford GT/GT40 or As I call It the Lola GT/Ford GT40 then Ford IV. The Author who has done excellent books such as the Scarab book which I cherish, and the Photographer Dave Friedman of who I have all three editions of his Corvette Grand Sport/Lightweights book have done it again this time together in this wonderful big Hardcover that commemorates the 50th Anniversary of America beating Ferrari at it's own Game.Personally I hate The blue oval, and I do like Ferrari but have always loathe Enzo and the way he operated,However there are many aspects to any one story which here is covered for the first time from neither a Pro-Ford stance nor Pro-Ferrari and seems pretty unbiased. The photography of the period is top-notch the new GT is mentioned briefly and a photo or two but the focus of the book is neither the Modern so-called Ford GT's or the Politically Correct and Gasp V6 Powered(No V8?Blasphemy!)GT. Instead it's the story although not minute by minute but the overall of the development process. The Fact the Lola GT was Chevrolet powered(Still one in existence, the Mecom Car)is not mentioned.Although Eric Broadley's involvement is told and there are some interesting details that have been presented here in this book and not in any previous Ford GT books.I do not like in the start of the book the author's tone regarding corporate involvement/corporations to that effect as if it was bad or the anti-establishment mumbojumbo speak of which I see as the only flaws of this otherwise great book even for this FordHating Fan, (Corvettes and Chaparrals Thank you). The enemy of the GT is covered such as the Chaparral 2D AND 2F and of course those pesky Ferraris. I would love to see A Chevy(Chaparral)VS Ford GT Vs Ferrari Book to compliment this book. The book also shows the brief "Mercury" GT logo'd (one appearance only)Cars from Daytona which I like. This book is better than Go Like Hell which is more like a Soap Opera style book than a book of facts. In fact I would say this is the best Ford GT VICTORY BOOK(Since the street cars are mentioned but glossed over)I have ever read and have had to pleasure to own my bias aside I highly Recommend it.There is too much to do justice in a review for this book!Bravo!
FORD GT....a true legend in motorsports
FORD GT is undoubtedly the best documented photo-narrative history of Ford's GT project...most fitting to represent the 50th Anniversary of Ford's domination in motorsports competition. Kudos to author Preston Lerner for his dedicated work and to photographer, Dave Friedman, for his legendary images. Ford GT is the perfect gift for a true motorsports enthusiast....Vroom, Vroooom!
Ford GT
This was a Christmas present. My fiance' is a major car fan. He loves fast sports cars. He owns fast sports cars. I thought he would enjoy reading about how Ford GT blew away the competition then. Amazon had the best price and free shipping which blew away the competitiion.
The Great Ford GT40
This is a wonderful companion for "Go Like Hell" which is the premier history of the Ford vs Ferrari duel. Excellent photos with a very slightly different spin on the story. Highly recommended. The 1960's was certainly a time when American industry could achieve great things from winning Le Mans to going to the moon.
Great read !
Great read on/for Ford history. Packed with great info and great pictures. If you're a Ford fan and especially a Ford GT 40 fan, you need this book in your library !
Five Stars
Very happy.
