Watts At His Best
It's an Andrew Watts book, so you know that you're going to get rich character development, intriguing plots, and an ending you didn't see coming! The initial romance on the beginning hooked me clear into the middle of the plot, where a twist was waiting. I really took the bait and loved it! The context of the story revolves around the development of AGI - Artificial General Intelligence - and I have to say that, at times, it is downright scary to read. Watts employs his usual standard of deep, contextual storytelling that is still gripping to a lay reader (you don't need to be a computer engineer). Overall, my only regret with this book, is that it had to end and I have to wait till next year for a new title!
Andrew Watts once again hits it out of the park
I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review. And was I ever glad that I was. I have read a number of books from Andrew Watt. They have all been excellent. He came through again. He digs into the deep hole of AI and international espionage nd how every power in the world wants to get its hands on the technology. Twists, turns, people not who they seems to be and all the great action made this a wonderful read. If you like spy thrillers, this is for you. One thing I look for in books is language. There was very little language here that made me squeamish. I appreciated that. Definitely a plus.
Andrew Watts has done it again
Artificial Intelligence is not coming - it is here. A recent news story reported that a big tech company had fired their AI Ethicist. Why should we care about the ethical implementation of AI? What do ethics and AI have to do with one another? Andrew Watts paints a vivid picture of the implications in Firewall, his newest offering. The characters and the story will grab you right out of the gate and keep you guessing to the end of this action-packed tale. Firewall is a well told story with a core cast of characters that draw you in and hold your attention. If you read the War Planners series get ready for another wild ride. If you haven’t read his other books this is a great time to see what all the fuss is about. Either way you’re in for a treat.
Andrew Watts just keeps getting better
Andrew Watts has taken another step forward as an author with his latest book. He has a strength of putting enough reality into a plot that you begin to think this really could happen. I'm now wondering if Amazon is paying attention to what I type as a review so it can mold my thought and purchasing processes! (I have no doubt they do that!) The plot was realistic. Characters and their actions/reactions were conceivable. The length fit the topic and had an occasional twist thrown in to keep me guessing. I had other materials to read the last couple weeks but this book kept my interest and the other materials suffered. Congratulations Andrew. This is a winner.
Action thriller you can't put down
If you enjoy an action thriller, where you will find yourself totally immersed in the story after the first few pages, this book is for you. Firewall begins with Colt Mc Shane as a CIA operative whose mission is to infiltrate Pax AI the world's leader in artificial intelligence. Pax AI is on the verge of releasing new technologies that will change the world. Ten years earlier Colt as a Lieutenant on a USS Navy destroyer, while on leave in Tel Aviv meets the love of his life Ava Klein. But due to a set of circumstances the love affair ends only to be rekindled years later in San Francisco at Pax AI. The breakthroughs of Jeff Kim CEO of Pax AI has provoked corporate espionage. Ava and Colt find themselves intertwined with spies from all over the World not knowing who they can trust. Tim Watts brings life to his characters, making you feel you are there smelling the smells and hearing the sounds. You really get caught up in the life of the main characters journey. I only hope Colt, Ava and Jeff will have more adventures together.
Anxiously awaiting the next one!
Andrew Watts got me hooked with the War Planners series. Then, I started with Max Fend. Andrew just keeps getting better and better. This time, it's a glimpse of what our technological future might look like. It's interesting timing as there have been rumors of Bill Gates funding research into nano-tech that could be injected with an immunization (for example.) The premise of Firewall has far more frightening consequences and is eerily similar to the sort of activities our mainstream media is being accused of, today. The very idea of the potential for directing the opinions and thoughts of the general population is a dictator's (politician's?) dream. Firewall builds an intriguing yarn around this concept. Firewall is an attention grabbing blend of technology, spycraft, mystery, action. It throws in a little romance, too. The result is a titillating thrill ride, leaving the reader with a hunger for what comes next. What will Kim do to grow his company? Will Colt get deeper into field operations? What will happen to Ava's career and her relationship with Colt? We'll be looking forward to finding out. I was fortunate to participate in reviewing an advanced copy of Firewall. Though I have already read the book, I purchased the release copy for my library, anyway.
A new series and as good as the last
A rather chilling look at possibly our future. Great characters and plot lines, too real perhaps to ignore as I have read about some of this in other places, A I savior or controller. Really enjoyed the introduction process of the characters and the all too human stumbling of the main propenents of the story. No spoilers but as far as I am concerned a must read and I will surely read the next one
A fun Read
Author Watts makes a bold departure from his War Planners series. Like that series, the book is well written, the characters real and the plot guaranteed to catch your interest. You discover that plot along with the main characters, making you occasionally wish for an organization chart to keep plot and people tied together. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. It was not predictable and each turn of the plot was plausible and interesting. As the story progressed, I found myself going back to read earlier events more closely. Obviously, this is a book 1 and a host of interesting characters are ready to take us forward. I’m looking forward to Book 2 Strongly Recommend.
Half a book
I just finished this book a couple days ago. Its general topic, artificial intelligence (AI), is certainly relevant to our time. Driving 14 hours yesterday I couldn't help but think of the AI I was using just in the vehicle - adaptive cruise control, automatic dimming and brightening headlights, collision avoidance, blind spot monitoring - just as examples. The book, however, is slow for at least the first half and probably more. It does not become a "page turner" until far too close to the end. Then the end of course is primarily the big tease for the next book. You may love this book. I did not. I'm frankly sick of books that seem to be just the setup for the next book. Though I may change my mind in my eternal quest for another book or 6, I do not presently intend to buy volume 2.
A fantastic read!
I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this book and truly enjoyed it! I work in technology (my title is "Data and AI Architect" for one of the largest tech companies in the world, so I was pretty skeptical of the plot line when I first saw it. I have to say that Mr. Watts did a wonderful job of balancing the reality of AI with the perils that it brings. This book will be enjoyed by technologists and thrill-seekers alike. I have enjoyed all of his books, but have to say that this one is his best ever! Cannot wait for the next installment in this series!

Well written & Suspenseful
I have read the War Planners series by this author and have enjoyed them very much. This book was well written and the storyline well thought out. I enjoy stories in the techno-thriller and apocalyptic genres. Firewall presented a story that lends credence to those who believe that our rapid advance in technology can-- and might cost mankind their future in cataclysmic devastation from an unexpected source. If Mr. Watts continues to write books like these I will continue to read his works.
Hopefully the 1st in a new Techno-Thriller Series from Andrew Watts
I read and enjoyed Andrew Watts’ War Planner techno-thriller series. Andrew has surpassed his earlier success with Firewall – a complex, riveting techno-thriller revolving around the global race to develop and control AI technology. The story is well developed and fast-paced, with fascinating characters and unexpected plot twists. I highly recommend reading Firewall and look forward to many more books in this series from Andrew Watts. Thanks to the author and Severn River Publisher for the opportunity to read this book and share my honest opinion.
The evils of AI
This book had a great start. Spies meeting to turn another spy but the meeting goes horribly wrong. Then a chapter explaining the backstory of the main characters. After that it fell apart. Too much description, too much explanation, nothing to move the story or build tension. Toward the end there is more action but it doesn't build the tension. This had the makings of a good book but it really needed to be tightened up.
FIREWALL continues Watts exceptional storytelling.
I enjoyed all of THE WAR PLANNERS books, and now I’m anxious for THE FIREWALL SPIES, after reading book 1. Watts has an uncanny way of telling a seemingly complicated story involving the latest technology and making it easy and enjoyable without too many complicated characters. The suspense slowly builds from page 1, until the unexpected climax, which basically sets the stage for Book 2. Thanks Andrew.
Great story, though the deceptions by different people were somewhat unbelievable, people are not that naive
Liked the thesis of AIG being a huge danger, know enough about AI to know that predicting the next few words in NLp and predicting what everyone will say and do is even more than a quantum jump. Should have had the quantum computer already predicting the next few hours, and from there yes you can imagine predicting the future. Not many other readers would doubt it, show it as almost done already, invent something that’s not imaginable now and make it like already a done deal, then people will jump further. Btw, I am an AI person and we have a lot more to go to reach all that, not even clear it’s inevitable.
Captivating
I found this book to be thoroughly captivating. I could not put it down. I was also thrilled by the story and the action. I found it suspensful and exciting. I also found the story to be intellectually challenging and thought provoking. I would recommend this to anyone who likes science fiction thrillers along the lines of Douglas E. Richards!
Book reading just gets better and better
In Reading past Andrew watts book I became a fan of his style the many twists and turns. on each chapter, the depth of each character the plots the books take, and on the firewall the ending. That was a big surprise hopefully going forward this new series will continue be a great series like the past series
CEO Programmer FBI Spy!
Like the real world of espionage, you never what is going on or who to believe. What I especially like about Watts is his uncanny ability to foresee the track of today's technology and its frightening applications. This book will open your eyes to artificial intelligence developments and industrial espionage. Like John MacDonald, Watts uses good fiction to present issues of ethics and society.
Excellent
I read all of it war planners series and this book is just as riveting as they were. I am looking forward to the next book and already pre ordered it.
The best, most fascinating book I have ever read
I read 3-4 books weekly and have for many years. Without a doubt, this was the most informative, most provoking and insightful book I have ever read. Simply fascinating. Kudos to an outstanding author. Please, please hurry with your next book.
A window into our future, and our future may be here today.
I could not put this book down. Today this may be looked upon as fiction, but 20 years from now it will be a description of fact. Andrew Watts is the cause of me losing a lot of sleep. I've read every book in the War Planner series, and am about to start the Max Fend series. There were many twists and turns, and it wasn't clear who the bad guy was and what his motivations were until the last couple of pages. The action was non stop, with only one brief section that I felt was over explained. I would highly recommend this book, and the overall works of Andrew Watts. Well Done!!!!!
Solid Watts
Watts solidly delivers on spy genre themes. The detail is not as technically sound as the War planners saga, but that’s to be expected bc ML is probably not his area of expertise. I also think he planned this book before the AI bubble started to pop. But all in all, very entertaining, a d I look forward to the next one.
Fantastic
Colt must be related to Max. The extensive research Andrew did for this story is extraordinary. He is able to explain concepts in layman's language. Great character development and interwoven stories. His words paint a visual understanding.
Intense!
This is one of those books that grabs the reader right from the start and just doesn't let go! The combination of high-tech and intelligence community with keep readers glued to the book! Fun reading!
Another excellent story from Andrew Watts....WoW
As someone with some exposure to AI, I find the story fascinating. A little bit on the far-fetch end with QC + AI. But it makes the story flow well. Look forward to the next chapter.
A great read that makes you fear what technology is capable of doing to us
Watts has created a new set of characters that I look forward to following in future books (hint: keep writing and do it faster). The scenario is believable and just advanced enough that you don't have to worry about whether this is already happening today (I hope). I can't recommend this book and the rest of the books Andrew has written. Get yours now.
Well crafted with richly developed characters
After reading the War Planners series I wasn’t sure what to expect next from Andrew Watts. What he crafted didn’t disappoint me. Filled with suspense, espionage, spy craft and moral and ethical debates about AI was well written. Characters were richly developed, especially Colt McShane and Ava Klein, leaving me anxious for the next installment.
Another Great Story
Andrew continues to come up with new storylines with great characters. He has a great grasp current world issues and technology while weaving a fast moving story. I look forward to the next book.
Good start
A battlefield for the ultimate power. Probably more real than we know. Fascinating possibilities . Good first installment, interesting to see how Colt will develop
Fast paced and excellent...
I really enjoyed the story's intrigue and the love story of the main characters. It had a satisfying conclusion. Looking forward to the next books.
Another Cover to Cover thriller
I highly recommend anything written by Andrew Watts. This is his latest writing, and it does not disappoint. Very real life scenarios, that one can easily see they could happen in today's world. This should develop into another great series of novels, as I truly enjoyed his War Planner series.
Very Good Fast Paced Read
Interesting twist of recent technology and the usual international espionage intrigue. Recommended for those who enjoy the Clancy type of thriller.
Build up to a fast paced ending!
Watt's did a great job laying out the plot of Firewall. He created characters you are invested in. Both good and bad. I truly like the "good" set of characters and hope to see them in future books of the series. Keep the love interest going! Colt and Ava are hopefully going to have many more encounters in future books. On a serious note Watt's has tackled a subject that will have great ethical and real world issues in the not too distant future. A great read!
Terrific
Great story of espionage. Lots of twists and turns with many players. Surprised by the ending. Looking forward to Book 2. Recommend this.
Good story!
Well written, with good cast of characters. Good plot, not knowing who the bad guys were! Looking forward to more from Andrew Watts!
Firewall
Very intriguing book, keeps the suspense alive and moves around alot. The characters are very real and believable. Also great locations.
Page after page of excitement with barely a moment to catch your breath.
A great example of edge of your seat reading. Hopefully the rest of the Firewall Spies delivers the same level of excess.
Interesting Science Thriller
Good story with an interesting science background. Thought that the story dragged at times. Good enough to be worth a read
Thought provoking concept
Scary to consider this a real possibility, but the idea was entertaining. I found the plot and action somewhat stale.
Gr8 read
An exciting, thought provoking, scary book. A real page turner. Good stuff! My wife couldn't wait until I finished so she could read it.
Excellent
Not the same old same old. Chock full of interesting new(to me) info. Great characters. Highly recommend. Looking for his next one.
I'm ready for book 2!
I caught onto Andrew a few years ago and have never been disappointed... The streak continues!
An absorbing preview of a world dominated by AI
Lots of intrigue and confusion over people’s ambition and objectives. Fast paced and exciting but the author tries to do too much with overlapping narratives whose interrelationships are unconvincingly contrived and simplistic.
Excellent read!!!
Excellent story! Well written, and hard to put down! Andrew Watts has done it again...this one rivals his War Planner series!
Good start for a new book series
It's good to see many of the problems with AI looking into our future.
Firewall is an AI Thrillride!
Andrew has hit it out of the park again! I have read all of his books so far and have yet to be disappointed. Firewall takes on a brand new topic for Andrew, but his research is evident and writing style is fast paced. I enjoyed the development of a new character set and can't wait for part 2.
Not the best
Interesting story and read, but had trouble staying with it. Not your best Andrew, hope the next one is better
great read
Filled with intrigue, mysteries, plots and sub-plots...kept me interested and wanting to read more and more. Can’t wait for the next one- I appreciate the lack of profanity, too. Thanks, Andrew!
Fast paced!
Very well done story.
Great weekend read.
The plot twists and turns throughout the book, making it difficult to put down. The topic, AI, creates a layer of sinister challenges that add a fourth dimension to spy/thriller novels. Awesome book.
Ok
A so so thriller
Scary Stuff!
I thoroughly enjoyed the War Planners, and Firewall is just as good. War Planners dealt with China as a threat, and made a potential scenario real. Firewall does the same with AI. Watts shoves this subject to the forefront using his great storytelling style and structure.
Another compelling work from Andrew Watts
Fast moving with a strong connection to current events. I could not put the book down and can't wait to read more from this author. Thank you
Tight techno thriller with a scary likelihood.
Tightly written with excellent attention to detail. One of the best by the author who is clearly on top of his game.
Thought provoking
Very entertaining and moves at a good pace. Would recommend to anyone interested in spy novels. Looking forward to next book in series.
Excellent
Keeps you thinking and on edge throughout, enjoyed it thoroughly
Imagine the future, and you’re not in it
AGI (artificial general intelligence) is frightening but inevitable. Personally I consider it to be the most probable of the “great filters”, the one that brings most civilizations to their demise before they reach a stage where they can expand out beyond their home worlds and greatly increase their chances of survival as a species. Firewall brings a lot of these dangers into focus and shows how the major players are competing in the arena. The major players in the tech sector are not named pre se but we all know who they are, and you will trust them at your peril. But we are all just along for the ride, whistling past the graveyard. Kudos to Andrew for bringing this hobgoblin out into the light and shining a small light upon it. I’m not going to do any spoilers but the ending did catch me off guard. I read about two hundred books a year and this one will stick with me for some time.
WOW, Another Great Adventure!
Colt McShane is a top Navy Officer who is flagged for advancement and is a great person. On leave at one of their port calls in Israel Colt falls for Ava Klein an Israelis woman who is a concert pianist. Colt’s ship has to leave early due to a terrorist bombing in Israel and loses contact with Ava. With all of the issues he decides to leave the Navy and works now for the CIA and at times works closely with the FBI on terrorist issues. Pax AI the world's leader in artificial intelligence. Jeff Kim CEO and founder of Pax AI is a math and AI genius, and is leading the world in Artificial General Intelligence. With all of the other companies and countries around the world trying to steal any of their technology because it is worth a fortune and the ultimate power and control, they have the most advanced firewalls and controls to keep it safe. Yet with so much at stake the international espionage is finely getting a little taste of their code when one of the top Pax AI scientists is murdered during a joint CIA, FBI sting to recruit an informant for national security. The FBI decides to place Colt into Pax AI because his cover as a financial analyst and because Ava Klein is a top executive at Pax AI at the company. The story is a page turner as we follow Colt in trying to unravel all that is going on at the company and the espionage stakes with top national security concerns. I think you will enjoy this book as the story unfolds with the twists and turns of trying to solve the various mysteries, it will keep you in suspense as to what will happen next. I really enjoyed this series and this book!
There was a prediction that I would read this book
Andrew Watts gave me an ARC of Firewall in exchange for my review. Thanks, Andrew! Here is my review. Andrew has written several books. Most of them are military thrillers. I haven’t read any of them yet. I have wanted to read Andrew’s books for some time, but haven’t until now. Firewall is an espionage thriller. More specifically, a corporate espionage thriller. A company in California called Pax AI is the leader in developing artificial intelligence (“AI”). The value of that technology is incalculable. The owner of the AI will be able to impact the world in many ways, from healthcare to weather forecasting, with obvious business and military advantages. The owner will be able to control the world to a large degree. All of the business competitors are trying to steal the intellectual property associated with the AI. Many of the world’s countries are also trying to steal the intellectual property using espionage. Foreign countries typically try to steal the governmental secrets of other countries. But they also try to steal valuable intellectual property from businesses around the world. I really enjoyed the novel. One layer deals with the espionage and tracking the various parties and searching for one or more moles. Another level considers the incredible impact AI could have on the world in various ways. And it raises the critically important ethical issues related to AI and its implementation. In the hands of an unethical operator, AI could be devastating. There is an example where the developing AI predicts a conversation between two humans before it occurs. This suggests that those who have the right data and the ability to process it can predict damn near anything. That is the scary part about AI. It has incredible power to benefit, but also destroy. I highly recommend this book.
Perfect timing
Its perfect timing for this book, all that is going on today in the world lends a level of reality to the story. I am a big fan of the war planners and this book is right up there. There is a level of detail and fanese about the writing, that gives this book an even higher level of reality. The story line has all you would want, good character development and twist and turns around every corner that keeps you locked in. But for me the main character is a bit weak or maybe its lacking in what I would expect from an operator for the CIA deep cover. I'm not saying that it is right of wrong just different from other lead characters in this type of book, I'm not sure if that makes it closer to what is real or just what I have come to expect. It just seams that I feel a little less sure of the true men and woman that do this kind of work, it seemed colt was more lucky than talented or insightful. It could also be an example of what a team around you contributes maybe your not the sole savior and reality truly is a team effort. Again the way the story flowed was what really kept me it was nice that the writing is what kept me not the strength of the lead character. I think it lent itself to a more well rounded book. It is very much worth the read.
A must read and just as frightening as War Planners
As I'm reading this I'm reminded of Clancy's work. Excellent research an as with the War Planners, somewhat prophetic. It is fast-paced and draws you right in from the first chapter. You feel you know the players and the emotions they go thru as they face the dangers, but also the ethical questions that arise from futuristic hi-tech (okay, maybe not so futuristic). Andrew took us on a ride that at first seemed fictional with the War Planner series, but as events have unfolded after the series launched, you found yourself asking if what you read was actually fiction....the same thing is probably going to happen with this series.
Maybe Watts’ best ever...
Maybe the most visually engaging story I have read in a long time. Andrew draws the characters out and keeps them moving from multiple compelling situations around the globe. This is what feels like the first of many for our newly transitioned heroes. He makes it seem like he has been a fed/spy for decades. And hoping not to give away too much -- the next generation -- the Age of AI is freaking scary! And Andrew does his best to show how critical it is to be kept in check... I loved Andrew's work in the War Planner series -- this is better!
Don't miss this high-octane read
Firewall is the latest effort of Andrew Watts, who continues to cement his place in the first rank of technothriller writers. It introduces Colt McShane, former naval officer and CIA covert agent who is tasked with uncovering a mole inside a leading edge artificial intelligence Silicon Valley firm. Tension builds as a top scientist for Pax AI is murdered, and Colt finds his former lover is now a top executive who may be much more than she seems. Plot threads are deftly interwoven as Pax AI is about to demonstrate world-shaking technology. Strong characters and a plot drawn from next month’s (or next year’s) technology breakthrough combine for a high-octane read. Don’t miss this first of two novels and be aware that it leaves you on edge. This would make a great movie. (Full disclosure – I received a pre-release copy to review. But believe me, five stars are well-earned.)
A well written thriller
Having read the War Planner series and having been offered an early reader option I was looking forward to this book. A completely different approach to a spy novel. Our protagonist Colt, is a CIA operative who moved over to intelligence from a promising career as a Naval officer. I was worried at first, he was a hard charger, evals were top bloc, perhaps this was going to be a spy that was a super hero. He isn't, but he is a believable character who becomes disillusioned with his nave career after a breakup with Ava, who we meet later on. The novel takes us on a journey through the world of tech, possible industrial espionage, possible national espionage all to gain access to software that can change the world. I am an inpatient reader when it comes to thrillers but this book drew me in, I had to force myself to slow down and enjoy the journey. A highly recommended book.
A fast paced and topical read
Unlike some of the others who have reviewed this book; I believe that the characters are more or less the stock characters found in books of this type. They are the worlds beautiful, well off and brilliant people. It is what Watts does with these people that is intriguing. Watts uses these characters to drive a story line which to me was more about AI than character development and frankly more interesting. His perception of the benefits and pitfalls of AI can be seen in numerous TED talks on the subject. What this author does is to place the issues into a realistic - if somewhat over the top - world. The action is fast paced, the plot is tight and yet manages to spring some interesting curves. You are left saying; "I really did not see that coming, but yes I get it". And yes, Watts really is now a writer that can hold my attention throughout this offering. Looking forward to more.
How soon will computers take over the world.
I received a copy of this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review. This is a timely book with all the attention Big Tech has gotten recently. AI, artificial intelligence, to what degree will it control our lives. In this book, the technology is approaching the point where computers will be able to think for themselves. Controlling that will validly allow control of the world. One company, Pax AI and it's genius founder are apparently way in the lead in developing this technology. Unfortunately this makes them the target of both corporate and state spies. When one of their main scientists turns up dead Colt McShane a member of a secret CIA group is dispatched to try to find out what's going on. With all the usual suspects represented you'll be guessing until the end.
Was Kind of Tough to Read
Sorry to be slightly negative in this review, but feel I need to be honest with any review I do. Firstly, the War Planner series were jaw dropping, keeping you on the edge of your seat - this book really didn't start to get interesting until 45% complete. The middle to end of the book did equal that intense reading in other books from this author. Yes, I understand the first part of a book is to lay in the foundation for the rest of the book but feel that could have been done a lot sooner than what I read...
SPOILER ALERT: It wasn’t the butler…
That said the list of characters in this is perfect. The plot is simple and straight forward, good vs. bad. The twists are many and skillfully woven into the story. Most importantly, once I began reading it I didn’t want to put it down. I stayed up too late reading it, ignored the social media for two days, even took it with me to the doctor’s office. Once again Andrew Watts has created a spellbinder, a wonderful work of fiction that has more than enough reality in it as to make you wonder just how much of the story is true or may become true in the near future. And, like all Andrew’s books, never leave a page unread. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did and I look forward to the next installment.
A book to learn with while enjoying the read
Firewall is an exciting thriller, intriguing mystery, and a artificial intelligence (AI) primer compiled in one awesome book. Colt McShane, an CIA agent deeply undercover, is assigned a mission to pose as a financial agent evaluating an AI super-company while secretly working to uncover a mole suspected of stealing secrets from the company. McShane learns quite a bit about what AI is and what those working in the field hope to accomplish. This information is wrapped in some interesting action and does not slow down the plot. The action accelerates as the characters lurch towards a denouement. The ending is satisfying although I’d have preferred a more drawn out and harder to accomplish conclusion. But that’s just me.
Exciting story with action and intrigue
I enjoyed reading this book. It covers a lot of technology information dealing with A.I. and explores the moral implications and questions of the vast power that it portends. The most interesting thing about the story is the wide array of characters and how they react with one another. Many of them are likable characters but everyone has secrets and the plot takes some sudden turns and twists as these secrets are revealed. High technology, political ambition, international spies, along with consideration of the powers of the development of A.I. all team up for a very enjoyable read. I think this is the best of Andrew Watts’ writing thus far. I very much hope that he will use some of these characters to develop a series. I look forward to more of these adventures.
Solid thriller, based upon current technology, gives you a lot to think about
Having read Andrew Watt's War Planners series, I was looking forward to this book. It's a dark thriller, involving artificial intelligence (AI) and a company's efforts to stay ahead of everyone else, along with the efforts of China, Israel, and a host of others, trying to steal the technology. There are a lot of players in this book, but it's a satisfying read, and leaves plenty of room for sequels, without having a cliff hanger ending. The characters are interesting and the plot line is engaging. The AI aspects of the book serve as a peak at the future, much like 1984 predicted our current world. There are some scary potential ideas presented. Well worth reading.
Book about AI
I really liked the book. I know very little about AI, but if even some of the information in the story is correct, it is very scary. While reading the story, I kept thinking, what will this do to our economy? While I know the arguments that AI will also create jobs, there is a certain segment of your population that will not be able to fulfil the job requirement of the teck industry. That said, I did like the characters in the job and found them to be believable. There are enough twist and turns in the story to keep most readers happy and the final turn is unexpected. Although the clues are there if you really think about it. Overall very enjoyable.
A captivating, page-turning, well-written read.
Firewall (The Firewall Spies Book 1), my seventh read from author Andrew Watts. An incredibly well-developed, well-written book that takes off like a jet fighter from an aircraft carrier. The primary characters are well developed. Reminiscent of the best works of Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum. A captivating, page-turning, well-written read. A must-read book! “I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author and the sequel to this book Agent of Influence (The Firewall Spies Book 2). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Beginning of another great series from Andrew Watts
If you haven't read the War Planners series by Andrew Watts yet, you should. It was an amazing series of books. Firewall looks to me to be the start of another great series in the making. Firewall had a great cast of characters, led by Colt McShane, with believable backgrounds that had you engaged in those characters from the beginning. The story line had plenty of twists to keep you excited about what might happen next and which direction the story line was going follow. And just when you think you know what was going to happen, another turn of events has you on the edge of your seat. Some of the high-tech talk was just far enough out there to make you think 'wow,' but not too far out to make it unbelievable. The ending was like a great cliff hanger to a TV series, where at the end, all I wanted to do was set my calendar for the release date of the next book in the series.
Don’t miss this totally believable thrill ride 😎
I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of “Firewall” for review, and one chapter in I was hooked. If you haven’t read any of Andrew’s prior offerings I suggest you get on board. This is a brand new series and blends just the right amount of spy vs spy, technology espionage, action, romance, and plot twists that are not only surprising, but in the end, quite believable. This novel is set in the current day and will help the reader weave their way through the dangers that surround the quest for AI superiority. Be sure to make room on your thriller/mystery shelves for the new guy, Colt McShane 😎
provocative if a bit slow-paced
The beginning and the end were fast-paced but the middle 70% although informative, often dragged. It took me at least twice as long to finish this book compared the War Planner book series and Max Fend. Probably the best aspect was causing the reader to really consider the implications of Artificial Intelligence -- damn scary stuff. Having said that, the same concepts and issues were repeated by various characters multiple times, sometimes by the same character! I think this could have been 1/3 shorter and actually be better. If there were 3.5 stars that would have been my rating.
Excellent Book from an Awesome Author
I'm new to Andrew Watts books so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well whatever it was I thought before let me just say that he exceeded my expectations and them some. I love the mixture of romance, intriguing plots with turns that you never saw coming and the AI that is mixed in. The characters in the book are very relatable and you immediately feel yourself routing for them and getting sucked in to their goals and romance. If you've never read this author please grab this book and get started. You will definitely not be disappointed in them.
Another thriller
I was given a pre-copy and asked to write an honest review. I have read and enjoyed the War planner series and was not disappointed in his newest endeavor. This plot involves foreign espionage and Artificial Intelligence. CIA officer Colt McShane and Pax executive Ava Klein to find out the mole and why the the top scientist in latest AI technology was murdered. There are many twist and turns as they get closer to finding the mole. Does Klein and Mcshanes previous relationship hinder or help in the process? I look forward to the next one in the series.
Artificial Intelligence is here!
First off, I am a huge Andrew Watts fan. His War Planner series was great. His writing has hit a new peak with his release of Firewall. All his books have been timely and well researched but Firewall hit's it outta the park! The characters are engaging, the twists are amazing, and you don't have to be a techno-wizard to understand what's happening. Yes, Andrew is that good a writer. You'll not be able to put this book down so plan time to settle in and enjoy a great, timely, read. I highly recommend Firewall. You will not be disappointed.
A Riveting Spy Thriller !
WOW ! What a ride ! I have not read a book as much fun as this one in a long time. A riveting spy thriller so well written you watch the characters in your mind as you read ! AI (artificial intelligence) is being developed that every power in the world wants. A CIA agent is tasked with getting answers in a super secret company. A truly international cast of characters, non stop action/intrigue/mystery and what should be a best selling story line will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Certainly an absolute must read !
Spying on AI
War Planners has always been my favorite series from Andrew Watts, but I'm now moving Firewall to the top of my list. Having received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of Firewall, I found the scenario completely believable. Maybe this is not a good thing? It has the perfect blend of a spy drama combined with behind the scenes intrigue of big tech's reach for supremacy in artificial intelligence. This AI is not your ordinary AI, this one is different. Grab your copy of Firewall and get ready to look at the world through a clearer lens.
Hair raising computer story
While I did not like this as much as the War Planner series, the novel is well written. His characters, no matter the series, are well drawn and mature as the storyline develops. I found myself asking "Is this really possible?" and unfortunately I think this could point to reality in the not too far future. His interweaving of advancements in the computer field with secret agents keeps you turning the pages. This book will certainly bring up a lot of questions and you'll find yourself reading more computer articles after you finish this book. A good read.
Another Touchdown!
This man can write a book! Good character development. Great plot with lots of realistic twists and turns. AI is something I think we all need to learn more about for it’s very dangerous possibilities. But, for someone whose grandchildren must help with computer problems, this book was a real challenge for me. I learned a great deal from research I did to understand some of the terminology, etc. I couldn’t possibly put the book down, so I had to learn! Enjoyed the touch of romance throughout and that the protagonist wasn’t portrayed as someone who could leap tall buildings with a single bound. Read it! You’ll love it!
Watts Best Work Yet!
Firewall is Tony Watts best work yet. I read the entire War Planners series and was impressed by Watts storytelling and great writing. Firewall set a new and higher standard. The subject matter is well researched, thorough, and well presented. Even though it is a fictional story it is well worth the read just to start to understand an important subject we are facing in the not too distant future. Firewall grabs and holds your interest. It is a great read. I wish I could give it more than five stars.
Great start to potential new series
The author was kind enough to invite me to download an ARC, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I've read several others by Andrew Watts and have generally liked his writing style and story telling ability. This book features new characters that evolve nicely as the story progresses in a very scary but believable story about the power of AI technology and because of AI's potential the lengths that some will go to acquire it for perceived global dominance. I look forward to more stories about Colt McShane.
Can AI Run the World????
A new story and character line by Andrew Watts goes into the future development of artificial intelligence (AI) and it's perceieved impact on the world affairs. A new start up company has developed cutting edge technology only to have it's leading scientist murdered on the job. Therein is the story line. Who did it and why.....Character development is tight and limited to a smaller set keeping the story line moving along without alot of outside distractions. The consequences of the AI program falling into the wrong hands will bring destruction to everyone else. Thought provoking novel that will leave you wondering if AI will be the future for all of us.
Andrew Watts is back with another awesome series.
This latest book by Andrew Watt is a definite page-turner that combines AI with an action-packed storyline that feels unrelenting. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there is enough intrigue and misdirection in this story to give you whiplash. I’m not certain I can remember when I have enjoyed a techno-thriller with such a well-developed group of characters as much as Firewall. I can’t wait to read the next episode in this series. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
Pursuit of the Golden Fleece of AI
FIREWALL has the makings of a fascinating series that will best War Games. You have a stunning development of Artificial Intelligence, foreign espionage, a tight cast of characters with a very engaging story line. The technology if perfected will transform our universe. Colt McShane, a CIA NOC is task with a assignment, acting as a analyst for an Investment Banking firm, to access the progress of a firm leading that is the apex developer of AI. Event occur that suggest the technology is compromised. People are killed and spying by America enemies and allies is in every thing that is happen in San Francisco. The story will hook you and it will be an enjoyable and satisfying. One might detect that the story is building the foundation for a great series of fascinating reads.
A new great series to follow!
Andrew Watts has a great new series to expand on. In this, the first book, he builds characters in a plot that draws you in completely. Each location is easy to visualize and the characters are realistic and easy to follow. This book gets you into the world of Artificial Intelligence and the competition and race all the major Countries are in to become the leader. The steps and espionage involved by all countries is what makes this a hard book to put down. The next hard part is waiting for book #2!!!
AI, Corporate High Tech ,FBI, CIA and international espionage collide at breakneck speed
Loved it. Completely different to The War Planners series and Max Fend. Yes, I've read and enjoyed them all. Credible characters, some with interesting backstories woven in to the story, a plot that twists and turns right from the start with the shocking sniper assassination of a Russian AI wonder scientist working for a US tech corporation that is not what it seems. Nothing and hardly anyone are what they seem right to the end. Cleverly done, nicely paced, intelligent writing. Another triumph for David Watts
It’s Andrew Watts, but better than ever!
I’ve read the entire War Planners series, so I knew Watts could tell a tale, develop rich characters and situate them in a tapestry of context. In Firewall, he does it again. The story drew me in, but the sub context about technology and artificial intelligence is timely. Where will technology take us? Just this week a college announced a new degree in Ethical Data Science. Just this week we read about massive hacks and intrusions by groups linked to Nation States and their attacks exploiting flaws in major software tools deployed across many corporations, universities and government groups. How timely is this book? It makes one think about technology, it’s ownership, how we use it, and the things we, as individuals, corporations and Nation States, do to try to control it. Cannot wait for the next book to pick up where this one left off - maybe it will be called Deepfake and be situated in a future presidential campaign. Maybe it won’t and it will tell an even more intriguing tale with more twists. Who is Ava Klein? Where did she go? Will we see her and Colt again?
Not as gripping as War Planners but a good read
Artificial intelligence is the next threat to the world and Colt McShane is the guy to reign it in. I have to admit that cyber stuff doesn't usually hold my attention long. It's abstract and just doesn't challenge my imagination the way a book about the world being tricked into global conflict does (as in War Planners). The plot is good and the characters develop well over time. My bottom line is that you'll love it if you're a computer enthusiast, you'll like it if you're a espionage enthusiast, and you'll never finish it if you love romance novels.
Best Watts book yet.
Andrew Watts has really matured as an author. This is a fascinating book from the first page and just builds to the end. The story line was not just believable it is relevant to todays events. I especially appreciated the fact that the author did not have to make up some new technology or do something that is obviously scientifically impossible. He used current facts and imagination to make a very believable story. A deep look into Artificial Intelligence, which has so many varied meanings, especially by non-specialists. This is a thriller that has everything, from spies, a good love story, espionage, government intrigue, business intelligence and competition, etc. It is fast paced right up to the surprising ending. Book 2 is already set up and I can't wait for it to come out next year.
AI, the road to the new terminator?
If you have watched any of the "Terminator" movies, the plot in this book moves in that direction. It is well written; easy to read; each character is developed to the point that they almost seem like real people. There are many twists in the book that hit me unexpectedly and kept me thinking as to which character was truthfully who they said they were. The book ended with what I thought was a loose end as I thought this was a one and only novel. But, that chapter may have ended, but there is more to come, evidently! I enjoyed the book in that it wasn't filled with expletives-- the plot is always more important than filthy dialogue and the author developed very well without having to resort to vulgarity or even steamy sex descriptions. I would rate the book, if that is permissible, as PG. Looking forward to the next chapter. No "hasta la vista, baby" in the near future. :)
Wonderful novel
Another great book by Andrew Watts – like his prior series, War Planners, this book grabs your attention early on and doesn’t let go. It is well thought out and almost scary believable. Lots of good character development and plots to keep up with as you get involved with the different characters. It’s also a good introduction to what Artificial Intelligence is and what it might become in the future. Firewall will keep you up reading at night, it’s that good. It’s a definite MUST READ on my list.
The best book by Andrew Watts yet!
While I really enjoyed the War Planners series, Firewall is my favorite book by Andrew Watts now. The book is full of so many twists and turns that kept me guessing from beginning to end what was going to happen next - it makes for a book that you don't want to put down! I enjoyed the character development that progresses throughout the book as well and I am looking forward to the next book in the series to see what happens to the main characters. Perhaps the element that I enjoyed most about Firewall is the thought provoking AI ethical issues that are underlying the plot and are discussed at multiple times in the book. It made me realized how little attention I have paid to the kind of changes technologies such as AI will bring to mankind, and the enormous risks associated with some parts of it; this aspect of the book made the story very real, and disturbing at times, and made me want to learn more about what is going on in the world of AI now.
Great timely action thriller
Note that I received an advance copy of this book. This is a remarkable book. It was exciting and kept my interest thoughout the entire book. Something that really struck me as I read was that this book ties in so well with so many things going on today in the nation and the world, politically, culturally, socially. Governments. Big tech. Social media. The Internet. Fake news and deep fakes. Everything I read was plausible, and most if not all the major premises in the book are probably happening right now. I kept thinking as I read and related the story to things in the news, "This is just like (fill in the blank)." The plot was outstanding with many twists and turns and surprises.. The characters were interesting. I cared about what happened with the characters. I should also note, as you can see in the purchasing information, that this is part one of a two-part series. So there wil be a second book. But don't be concerned that Firewall will leave you with an awkward ending. It leaves you at a place where you will be satisfied while wanting to finish the story.
Here’s a book that really makes you think.
I had a little trouble getting through all the technical AI jargon at the beginning of the book, but the middle to the end of it more than made up for it. With spies from every major country working for Pax AI and trying to steal their work it was impossible to know who to trust. The suspense was so intense that I kept turning pages late into the night. The surprise in the last chapter gave me goose bumps and a lot to think about. An excellent story.
Andrew Watts did it again.
This book is really great. Watts gave time for the reader to understand the backgrounds of the characters. The story line has twists and turns that keep you guessing. It is up to date with all the attention on AI in our lives now. I usually don't like books series if there to long, but I think this is one that I would make an exception. If you like fast action, great story line and good characters this is the book for you. Try out, I don't think you will be disappointed.
Interesting High Tech
First time reading anything from Andrew Watts. Was an interesting read although lots of technical language and one had to read at a steady pace. I am somewhat familiar with most of the jargon but a layman would have to go slow to understand all that is happening in the story. I believe that GAI is here already and that in itself is worthy of seeing how problems can arise in this novel. I will read this again in a couple of weeks to see if and what I might have missed in the language.
First book in a new series by this author
This book is awesome. Probably his best writing to date and I am a big fan of Andrew Watts' military books. What makes this special is the timeliness of the story. It is about AI and provides a fictional description of exactly the kind of mind bending that big tech is doing to the public right now. Read it or listen to it. Either way you will enjoy the plot and begin to have a better understanding of exactly what big tech is doing to us.
Outstanding story that is hard to put down
First, this made my day, now there is competition with Tom Clancy's character Jack Ryan. Love Clancy's books, but to long between new releases. Now Andrew Watts has stepped into the ring with Colt McShane and his adventures. This story keeps your head on a swivel, look here, no there.....no way! Loved every page and cannot wait for more to come....please say there is more to come Bottom line, a great piece of work. Congrats Andrew
An Edge of the Seat High Stakes Thriller
Imagine a tech company with AI so advanced that its own scientists have ethical concerns. Add in the spy agencies from China, Russia, and Israel, as well as the United States which has investments in the company, and you have the ingredients for an edge-of-the-seat high stakes thriller. The author delivers, and readers will want to be prepared to read into the night. If you are not well-versed in AI and its promises and perils, this book will inform and, most likely, raise appropriate concerns.
Another captivating, excellent book from Andrew Watts
I received an advance review copy of the book, and as has been the case with Andrew's other books, I wasn't able to do my usual practice of having 2-4 books at a time in progress. There have been a few editing issues in prior books of his I have read, and I found none in this one. It was captivating in many ways, and I feel that I can recommend. I have had review copies of a couple of his books, and have liked them so much that I have bought them once they are available, and will do so again with this one. Highly recommended.
Worth the read
I enjoyed Andrew Watts' series the War Planners and Firewall was also highly enjoyable. Firewall has characters similar to many thrillers; former military officer who now works for OGA as non-official cover agent; a love interest from another time; in addition to Russian & PRC bad guys Firewall examines competition around world changing AI created by genius. If you watched the Nick Offerman series, DEVS, some of the locations and personalities will be familiar. In all a fun way to spend a few hours.
AI - it is here. Now. And it is smarter, faster, and virtually unassailable. Be scared.
Watts starts a new series (Max Fend -are you coming back sometime??) with an eerie description of reality that has arrived without concern for its logical conclusion. We as humans, petty, irrational, emotional.. are (and perhaps rightly so) soon to be a minor annoyance to a self aware artificial general intelligence. As Mr. Spock said - we are irrational. All of that said, I truly enjoyed this novel, and was privileged to be able to read an advance copy. I won't spoil the surprises, but must say I am enamoured with Ava, and look forward to more brilliantly written novels from Mr. Watts showcasing Colt!!!
Amazing Thriller
Firewall (The Firewall Spies Book 1) by Andrew Watts is an amazing story that I really loved reading. This is book number one in this amazing start to a brand new series that I am so hooked on and can not wait to read the rest. i highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about thrillers. I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
One of the best tech spy thrillers that I have ever read.
Without a doubt one of the best tech spy thrillers that I have ever read. Fast paced, great characters, interesting plot with several unpredictable twists in the story line, and loads of action to make this an entertaining and highly recommended read. Appreciate the clean style of writing and is testimony that good authors don’t need to resort to smut. I did receive a free ARC but was under no obligation to leave a review.
Very engaging--I hope it becomes a series!
I found this new book by Andrew Watts to be VERY exciting; it was full of the kind of technical details that Michael Crichton used to deliver, and the characters in the book were interesting and made me want to know more about them. The book was written such that it was easy to suspect nearly EVERYONE of being "the bad guy", and there were quite a few surprising twists and turns. I hope this is the start of a new series!
What to believe?
Colt is in the midst of an international take over. How does he figure out who are the good guys? and the bad guys? This is the best (so far) from Andrew Watts! Every page brings a bit of information, challenging what was considered fact from a previous page. Intricate plot, lots of technical information, spies, counterspies. It doesn’t get much better than this one! Hold on to your seat and enjoy the ride.....
Great characters and a "scarily" realistic storyline
Per usual, the character development in Firewall is spot on. While the story is good, the characters make this book great! Quite honestly, the plot in Firewall scares the he'll out of me. The fact that some of these things are actually going is what does it. Watts definitely created a page turner. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, you are skillfully turned a completely different direction. I can't wait for book 2!!!!
thriller from beginning to end
A fairly creative and original novel of artificial intelligence, mixed in with a murder mystery. Great character flow and good back story mixtures. The plot moves smoothly and has a perfect arc with multiple twists and turns. The main bad guy character/country seems to be the Chinese, as in previous novels by this author. Always a very enjoyable read and cannot wait till the next novel from this author.
Another outstanding winner!!
This book is so good I stayed up late reading it and was not ready to work the next morning. Wow is the summary of how much I enjoyed this book. I do not know much about the world of Artificial intelligence as a consumer but to read how it could evolve was amazing. It leaves me wondering if that really is the future ahead of us. The characters were all excellent and the twist and turns kept me glued to this book. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
Excellent
As soon as I started reading Firewall I was unable to put it down. Each page just kept you wanting to read more. Excellent explanation about Artificial Inelligence and the implications in can have on our lives. That combined with the incredible mixture of the best spy stories written in a very long time. No doubt in my mind that Andrew Watts is one of my favorite authors. Along with his other series he has certainly impacted the reading public. Highly reccomended for good and exciting reading. Thank you.
Firewall
Wow...at first I didn't think I would even continue reading this book...the next thing I knew I'm drawn into the story...riding the rollercoaster storyline...with many twists and turns... And just when I thought I'd figured it all out... An unbelievable , major, what the neck twist happens at the very end...now onto the second installment...this is the only rollercoasters I'm ever going to ride!!!!
Watts best book yet!
Wow! An insight into the near future as the author takes us inside to the development of Artificial General Intelligence. I found it both fascinating and scary. There are so many ethical considerations and so much that could go wrong. It took my mind into new explorations and knowledge. A great read with a love interest throw in for a little relief from all the serious mind twists.
The future is now
After reading Firewall, I really think the future could be less safe with technology. Could one person rule the wold with it? The twists and turns and jus how deep the plots are to achieve AI superiority kept me reading page after page. I have not read a book in a while and glad o have rea his one. Andrew Watt always has book to make you think and be involved as the main character.
I did not see this coming
There are so many thousands of spy thrillers out there that how can one stand out? 1) innovative story. 2) credible plot. 3) story is told convincingly. 4) you can’t wait to get back to reading it. I rarely think this but I am grateful the author wrote this book. It was at times thrilling, thoughtful, believable, funny, romantic, and the prose the author uses is smooth and adult. Can you tell I loved it?
outstanding start to a new series....
I was fortunate to receive a pre-pub copy of Firewall. As a fellow military pilot, i loved this new series. Artifical Intelligence is the future NOW. Andrew Watts has created a very believable "what if" of what we will be experiencing in the near future. The action is swift and never-ending...and just when think it is over...it isn't. Brilliantly done. I am onto book #2....
Best Andrew Watts book yet
I am a big fan of the War Planners six book series. I didn't think it could be topped, but I was wrong. Firewall is the beginning of what I believe to be Andrew Watts' best series yet. Can't wait to read Book 2, Agent of Influence. It kills me to have to wait a year for it to come out. C'mon Andrew; drink up some more of that bourbon and get us this next book earlier.
Fantastic thriller!
Another fantastic thriller by Andrew Watts! Anyone familiar with his previous books will be enthralled with this story. Anyone not familiar with Andrew Watts, this is a great place to start. The characters were engaging, and the plot was exciting and full of unexpected twists and turns. The only negative was that I read it to quickly. I can’t wait for book two!
Here we go again ...
I picked up on Andrew Watts with the first three books of his War Planners series. From there it was literally "when do we get the 4th?" ... "where's the 5th?" ... and "how long do I have to wait for the 6th?" I enjoy his writing, his plots, his character development, and the twists and turns he weaves into the story lines. Firewall does not disappoint. Good writing, terrifying plot, excellent character development, and yet again, more twists/turns the reader won't see coming. Sure it's a work of fiction, but then again, how close could this be to what's really going on behind the scenes in the tech world right now? I can't wait to see what comes next ...
Great read, highly recommend!
Andrew did a superb job as usual. He waste no time creating a great story line. The love story first then on to many twist on the story. The AGI information is very disturbing to say the least and surely makes me think about all that is going on in the world. I never expected the story to end as it did. Great read, love all your books. Looking forward to the next one.
Wow another Watts book
This has it all. Murder, love and intrigue A CIA agent McShane is sent undercover to find out about a company called PAX AI. They are working on Artificial super intelligence . In the wrong hands this could be the start of a new kind of war. McShane meets an old flame who works for PAX AI. Is she a traitor or is she a counter intelligence agent for Mossad.
Excellent Start For a New Series
Andrew Watts has done a great job starting a new series. If you enjoyed his War Planners series, you will enjoy this one as well. Similar writing and story telling but from a differing point of view and on a fantastic new topic. The only reason for 4 starts is there were a handful (3-4) times that some parts didn't quite make sense right away because the plot or character wasn't either fully explained or was confusing. Didn't detract from the story though and I'm exciting for all the subsequent books!
A Thriller That Gives One Pause......
A well-written nail biter that will surely satisfy all those aroused by the mysteries and intrigue of spies and counterspies. The object of all the excitement is technology in existence today in a get crude and unrefined form but with mind-blowing future potential that could - no, SHOULD make the reader reflect on what could possibly be in store for us in the not too distant future....
First time reading an Andrew Watts book. Won't be the last!
"Firewall" showed up in my Kindle Unlimited recommendations. Often, many of the recommended books are not very good but I gave this one a try. So glad I did! The story was well written and I was hooked from practically the first chapter. Wish it weren't almost a year before "Agent Of Influence" is available. I will definitely be reading his other books.
Great book, great new series!
Firewall the first book in a new series revolving around artificial intelligence and the damage it can cause if the wrong person or country decides to use it. I found the first part of this book lays out the story with it picking up with non stop action and very likable characters. I can see this being a great new series and would highly recommend it.
Welcome new characters
This latest novel from Andrew Watts is a cross between an espionage story and techno-thriller with fast-paced action from believable characters. Not everything is cut and dried — just as it is in the real world and that lends the novel even more credibility. The explanations of the technological aspects of the story were well-done and educational, which again lent credibility to how AI development is likely to shape the future — for better or worse. I enjoyed the inter-play between the "good guy" agents and I look forward to more books along the same line.
Right out of Today's Headlines
This story provides an interesting and gripping view into the emerging high-tech world. Well written and hard to put down. This novel will keep you on edge till the very end. If you haven’t heard about the advancements and risks of Artificial Intelligence then this story will bring you up to date in a compelling thriller from a terrific author.
AMAZING
Another amazing read by Watts! The story revolves around the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The characters are well developed and the plot is solid. The chapters flow together very well and are fast moving. You do not need to be a "Computer Geek" to get caught up in the roller coaster ride to the end. This has to be my most favorite of the Andrew Watts books I have read!! A MUST BUY!!
If you like spy thrillers, you will love this!
What a read! This is one of those books that is hard to put down. I found myself reading this book way past my normal bedtime because it is so engrossing. Great premise. Who isn't worried about artificial intelligence? This book takes that concern and builds a great story around it, with lots of twists and turns. I highly recommend the book!
Great book
This is the kind of book that keeps you up at night! I couldn't put it down. Don't want to spoil it for anyone else but the book is awesome and the fact that it's the first in the series left me anxious for the next installment. Andrew Watts is a great author and this book is another example of his ability. Can't wait for the next one.
The future is right around the corner..
Andrew Watts has written a story that might be very plausible before we are ready for it. Artificial General Intelligence is something the world must be prepared to handle, or the results might not be good. The characters are believable as is the premise. Along with the fact that state actors do engage in industrial espionage, Andrew weaves a good plot with the inclusion of a interesting lead character and his 'friend'. Now, I await a follow up story with Colt.
Definitely 5 stars, plenty of action with an interesting plot
Definitely 5 stars. The entire book was interesting and kept me wanting to read more. I did guess what was next a couple of times but not at the end. I enjoyed Firewall as much as any book I’ve read. Plenty of action, a very interesting plot and twists all the time. I don’t want to give away the story line but a very good read.
Good thriller for covert/espionage aspects until it veers off into too much detail on AI
I enjoyed the standard thriller aspect of this novel and especially the backstory behind the two leading characters. But the text bogged down when it went into too much detail on the AI aspects and the psychological profile of the AI CEO. The author should stick to the espionage and covert operations side of the house!
Plot, characters, artificial intelligence and a fantastic read
We have all read about artificial intelligence so we are familiar with the term. However Andrew takes it to a whole new level. Lots of intrigue, a little romance makes for an intriguing read. Is it here already? Of course it is. How far has the level of AIG reached? Only time will tell. Do we need to be concerned? YES!
America Dodges A Bullet
A girlfriend becomes a Mosad spy. A rising Navy officer leaves the USN and becomes a black ops operative. Super SI software draws several Nation 'Players' into battle. Allegiances are confused. Ava & Colt save the day with help from an Israeli spy. Non-stop action. Great character profiles. Don't miss this story.
This could be tomorrow’s reality
This is the first installment of a brand new series by Andrew Watts, and what an opener! This high octane story comes right out of today’s national security headlines - cyber warfare, AI, Russian and Chinese spies and Silicon Valley billionaires. There are twists at every turn, so read this if you you think you have what it takes to hold on!
Thought Provoking Thriller
This is a deep dive into the world of artificial intelligence interwoven in a fast paced plot. It combines moles, foreign intelligence plots, intrigue along with plenty of twists and turns. It was a great thrill ride that made me think about upcoming technology changes and ethics. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
The Future’s Not What It Used to Be...
With this new series, Andrew Watts shows the new challenges facing the world and how complex the Intelligence Community has become. He perfectly combines the old school “bang, bang shoot’em up” action thriller with cutting edge technology and contemporary spycraft to create a thoroughly enjoyable ( and educational) exciting read.
Firewall is a winner!
I thoroughly enjoyed the War Planners series and I was not disappointed with his newest novel, Firewall. As a fan of Clancy, Coonts and DeMille I now include Watts in their company. I started this new book and soon discovered that I would have a hard time putting it down. From start to finish this latest book excels. Well done!
There has to be a next book!!
What a thrilling ending to this book!! I hope that there will be a continuation to it. The plot was great, the main character in the book is not one of those super-heroes, just a plain individual with a bit more brains and insight solving issues without, necessarily, resorting to violence. Great book!!!
Intriguing. Will it happen?
“Firewall” contains a variety of compelling story lines, any one of which can engage you in reading this well written book. You’ll delve into international spy organizations, intelligence agencies, murder, technology wars, how artificial intelligence might impact the world, and even a bit of romance. All of these elements are woven into a cohesive intrigue. Like Watts’ War Planners Series, “Firewall” is full of action and a very worthy read. Enjoy!
A work of fiction? A lot of it is actually believable
Sometimes reading stories like this used to seem like sci fiction, but now it's like reading the headlines. Fast paced action and realistic happenings put you right in the middle where you , duck, reach for a weapon or jump out of your seat ready too run. I look forward to reading the next book.
Outstanding
Great first book of a new series. Well written, thought provoking, and page turning. Doesn’t have a ton of characters to get to know, but you get to know the primary characters very well shortly into the book. Definitely should send a chill though every reader about even the most benign future of AI, to say nothing of the terrifying consequences of AI in the wrong hands.
Artificial Intelligence, Corporate Espionage non stop action
The only bad thing about this book is I read it in one day because I had to know how it was going to end. Scary and probably a very real premise when it comes to AI. Thought provoking storyline, compelling characters and unexpected twists and turns. Well done and I am ready for book 2 right now.
A cure for a pandemic reading funk!
I knew Andrew Watts would get me out of my pandemic reading funk and I was right. Andrew Watts never disappoints - with his fast paced dialogue and constant action not to mention the clever twists and turns. I’ve read several of his other series and this one is the best so far! Thank you Andrew Watts!
Excellent read - suspense at its best
Excellent long story. Full of suspense and many twists and turns. The author cleverly centered the story around AI. The AI developments were realistic and thought provoking. Could this happen to us in the near future? When I reached the end of the story, I was shocked. I am seldom surprised by an ending, but there was one more twist and turn at the end. Excellent book. I loved it.
Outstanding
An eye-opening and frightening novel that points out the danger of AGI in the wrong hands. It could happen - is there anything we can do to protect ourselves? Dynamic characters and powerful scenes will draw you in and keep you hooked. It is addictive. Very Highly Recommended.
Taken from tomorrow's headlines.
The technology is Artificial Intelligence but the story is about the world of espionage and trade secrets. Knowledge is power and that knowledge comes from research and hard work. When you're working with revolutionary, cutting edge technology how do you keep your secrets safe? Who can you trust? Losing those secrets, that "Intellectual Property", could mean the end of your company, or worse... if the wrong secrets go to the wrong players. The book was very enjoyable and believable. The technology is so real that you'll be thinking about it long after you've turned the last page.
Excellent storyline
The plot is complex, the characters likeable and dis-likeable as appropriate and there are many twists, turns and surprises. In the world of AI the subject opens the door to the dangers as well as the benefits of the technology and how it can be abused. There is also the general criminal element where the quest for power overwhelms any amount of decency. An excellent and engaging story!
New Thriller from Andrew Watts
Those who read his "War Planners" series will like this new espionage-centered book focused on artificial intelligence technology and the race to acquire a dominant position through research and espionage. The characters are well-drawn, especially the protagonist and his love interest, whose relationship seems very real despite their being on different sides. A well-paced thriller that anyone who likes this genre will appreciate.
Exciting!
I got hooked on this author with the “War Planners” series (if you haven’t read that yet, check it out). This book is very exciting, and very well written. Well developed and interesting characters vs some thrillers with rather thinly developed characters.
One of my favorites
Another great book by Andrew Watts, this book was well suited for my taste. I read several books a year of this genre. My library has over a hundred books. Firewall rates among the most enjoyed. Well written with mystery and action that makes this one hard to put down.
A riveting story, I had a hard time putting it down!
Work be damned, I've got reading to do. :D Firewall is one of those books that is hard to put down. The characters are believable; people you love and people you hate. The plot involves a timely subject, and enough research was done to do it justice. A great read!
Another page-turner by Andrew Watts—Firewall was outstanding
Those of us who don’t live in the fast-paced world of Silicon Valley, can only imagine the intellectual stimulus and power brokering that goes on every day. Wonderful character development, and shifting scenes that keep you hooked and trying to figure out the next twist and turn. Looking forward to his next!
Wow! Mr. Watts Hit It Out of the Park Again
I thought nothing could top the War Planners; but Mr Watts has done it again. The plot in this book is a very prevalent issue for today's Tech Community, and his storyline and characters pull you right in. Bravo!!! Cannot wait to read the next chapter!
Great first book in a series
Colt is a deep undercover CIA agent investigating an AI company as an investment banker. Intrigue and action occur every page as Colt tries to figure out who is spying for which country and who is stealing what technology. Fast paced and great reading.
Exciting blend of technology and spycraft
Andrew Watts has once again spun an exciting tale of intrigue, twists of fate and cutting edge technology in his latest book Firewall. Artificial intelligence will emergence as either a savior or perhaps the cause for human life to be relegated to a lower standing in place of superior machine learning. The plot keeps us guessing as to the real culprits and put before us some frightening aspects of how AI could be weaponized by countries or organizations to promote their superiority. Much to think about and looking forward to the next book from Andrew.
Interesting read
I liked the book. The the premise was good, although it got a little too 'in the weeds' about AI. However, the thinking behind the plot and involved technology was incredible and justifiably so. There was a good amount of action, which also kept me interested.
Watt's best yet.
A plot that is both enlightening, scary, and a believable progression of the controlled minipulation of the media in the future. Very well written. Great new characters. Watt's best book so far, and I've read most of his novels to date. Highly recommend.
Double Triple Dealing and Cyber Technology
I enjoyed reading about Colt and his interagency experience both with US and international organizations. AVA spiced up the story with her abilities, Mossad membership, and her feminine appeal. Recommended reading for tech and spy fans
Fast Paced Read
Andrew Watts has once again written a great thriller. This particular book is about artificial intelligence and the fight to control it. The author paints a picture of cutting edge technology and a possible scenario that is pretty close to what we are seeing as our technology advances. Once you start the book, you will not want to put it down.
Great book, spies, leading edge technology and lots of thrills
Best Watts book yet. The technology bit is very futuristic but just on the scary edge of realism. So much about this book very much like what is going on right now! And that is scary. Add in an investigation CIA, China you get it right.
Not necessarily his best.
I have read all of Andrew's previous books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. In fact I have had email conversations with him regarding the earlier War Planner series. I was a bit disappointed with Firewall however. I found the characters a bit weak and the plat thin. The book was like a primer on AI and in my opinion did not all tie together. It was like he had done extensive research on AI and wanted to work it into a novel. In any case I'm sure I'll read the next installment and hope for the best.
Wow
I don’t do spoilers but I will say that this book hooked me from the start. There is action, espionage, and even romance. A very well written book that sticks with you long after you’ve finished it. I can’t wait for the next book.
I gave up
At the 44% mark, I stopped reading. I kept nodding off. No action, just bureaucratic strategy sessions. Character development was weak and uninteresting. I did enjoy very much his "Glide Path" novel. This one was a tail dragger.
Must Read
Most Excellent!!! I could not put the book down. I love all the twists and turns in the plot. It definitely makes you think about the pro’s and con’s of AI. The ending was....well lets say read the book and you will be amazed!
