Geared For Firefighters but information everyone can use
Though the book is geared towards potential and current Firefighters, this guide is an essential tool for anyone who wants to improve their health and change their future. Based off of over 20+ years of experience Dan Kerrigan and Jim Moss knows what it takes to stay physically fit. This book has opened my eyes to new information, exercises, and eating habits that have helped me drop 175lbs. I look forward to posting uniform pictures once I'm EMT certified! If you want to change your life and reduce health issues in any public service career, you NEED this book.
You Can Never Train Too Much For A Job That Can Kill You
This book is unlike anything I have ever read before. Firefighter Functional Fitness isn’t a book that just tells you what to do and how to do it, but also why it’s important. The way Dan Kerrigan and Jim Moss have written this book levels with firefighters without sugar coating. It’s relatable! When you can actually see the bigger picture than the number on the scale it really changes your motivation. You’re out there to help people! How can you save someone else if you can’t save yourself. Without being physically and mentally fit for the job causes a risk not only to you, but the victims and your brothers and sisters. To not be fit for the job is irresponsible. What I love about the functionality of this book is that it doesn’t just list a bunch of exercises. Any physical activity mentioned in this book is something relatable to something you may do on scene...aka Functional Fitness. This book covers many topics, such as the four pillars and the Big 8! This book isn’t just straight text. It was carefully thought out and presents itself with pictures, diagrams, quotes, tips, facts, and an incredibly detailed table of contents. I myself am an EMT Student and plan to attend the fire academy shortly after. I decided to take the chance and order this book to get myself fit before I attend. At the end of the day, you can never train too much for a job that can kill you! It’s not about looks, it’s about getting the job done. The authors also have an Instagram page and a website. They care about their work and care about you. BOTTOM LINE: You got this far in my review and you came across this page for a reason. This is a sign. Whether you are training for the academy, a probie, been a firefighter for years, or are just looking for a way to better yourself. You’ve found it! Hands dow: no regrets! Only more motivation and determination!
The RIGHT perspective shift...
Coming from NSCA CSCS and TSAC-F certifications, as well as over a decade as a firefighter in one of the busiest departments in the world, I can completely get behind this programming. We are NOT competitive athletes. So, why would we train like one? How so? We do not have an official season of which we peak performance, followed by a time of rest and recovery known as detraining. Understand, that without a detraining period, such intense programming that we are used to with competitive athletes will only lead us to injury and burnout. That is not an option for us career firefighters (unless you are seasonal, then right on :) Train your body to thrive with this type of programming, with the similar style of periodization that they offer at the most elite military levels now. Become that all around warrior. This kind of programming will get you progressively thriving, and not just barely keeping it together until you retire.
Great Healthy Living Advice Even if You Are Not a Firefighter
I came across this book in one of those Instagram rabbit holes that you go down. I was curious what the authors had to say about nutrition (I have a degree in this), so I bought the book. I liked that they took a realistic and practical approach to eating and so found myself reading other sections of the book as well. I am not a firefighter, and don't expect that I ever will be, but I found much to apply to my own life regarding physical health and having a positive mindset. Additionally, it gave me an appreciation for the challenges and sacrifices that firefighters face and make every day. I think anyone who wants to improve their physical and mental health could benefit from giving this book a read.
Firefighter Functional Fitness
Great book for firefighter fitness! Highly recommended reading for those looking into getting into the fire service as well as those on the job. Provides an understanding on why our workouts must be functional instead of the normal back/bi’s chest/tri’s routines.
Combat Challenge firefighter review of firefighter functional fitness
An outstanding book, perfectly aligned to the needs, requirements and solutions for fitter, stronger and healthier firefighters. I recommend this book for all firefighters, whether you are just starting your fitness program or need to take your workouts to the next level. This should also be required reading for all chiefs and training officers to help design, implement and manage your fitness and health program with your department and firefighters. The organization and development of the program makes it easy for beginners to follow, and for experienced firefighter-athletes to add new variations and challenges. The chapters on nutrition and hydration will be helpful to everyone. As a Combat Challenge and OCR competitor I found the program to be helpful in improving my performance and as an older fire chief (60) key components for long term health and longevity in the fire service. Bill Gaughan. Asst. Fire Chief,
Excellent resource! Highly suggested.
As a primary care physician specializing in providing care to first responders, I find Firefighter Functional Fitness to be an invaluable resource. I keep this essential book in my office and recommend it all firefighters. The authors have covered multiple realms of fitness to include recovery, nutrition, and sleep. The recommendations are practical and come with modifications based on your skill level. A great book for all, from rookie to pro to civilian. I highly recommend Firefighter Functional Fitness!

The book was filled was some great information. A great book for those who are new to physical fitness or those returning to fitness after a long absence. Personally, I felt the book offered very little to those with a extensive background in fitness.
Great book that is very well written.
Bought a copy of this book to help find other ways to work out and stretch without always going to the gym. It has great techniques and everything is very reader friendly, with picture examples of what they are doing. Also mentions progress and egress on each movement and stretch. All in all it was well worth getting and reading. I still go back to it to keep fresh and have had a few friends take interest as well.
The Industrial Athlete: Keeping the firefighter fit for service throughout your entire career!
This book is not a self help study on how to get a great beach body or drop 40-pounds in four weeks, it is a book that approaches firefighter fitness from the industrial athlete perspective with an emphasis on getting into shape and maintaining a strong fitness level throughout your fire service career. The exercises focus on ones that can be done with limited equipment and target muscle groups needed by firefighter to do the job. The book also places significant attention on nutrition, rest/sleep and the importance of annual medical exams and on-scene rehab including firefighter decontamination. The chapter for fire chiefs that focuses on overcoming organizational barriers that prevent or limit physical fitness program is very helpful and much needed.

Get the book! You won't be disappointed!!
I have been a firefighter for 10 years and I just started with a new full time dept 2 years ago and decided to take my fitness to the next level. This book is great for a new or veteran firefighters. I use and look to this book for many workouts that I do on shift or at home. The most important thing we can do for a workout besides cardio ( go run! ) is functional fitness for our profession!!! I can't tell you how many times pulling hose during training has become much more easier as I train for it with my workouts. This is a great book for information and has lots of great tips!! Get it! You won't be disappointed for sure.
This will help you become a better firefighter
I got the book a little over two years ago. I have applied the principles in my workouts and training, and I have seen definitive gains in my functionality on emergency scenes. I have an easier time lifting heavy patients. I can work harder for longer on a single bottle of air. My recovery time between work periods on fires has decreased. These guys really know what they’re talking about, and they have workout options for every FD, whether you have a full gym or just your station.
A must read for all firefighters-probie or veteran
I've been a firefighter for 18 years. This book is the best I've seen on the subject of overall firefighter health and fitness. If it is read and the information used, it will make you a better, more capable, more confident firefighter.
Fire Academy textbook
I teach Firefighter Agility and Fitness at fire academy using this as the textbook.
Very informative
I initially bought this book because I saw it on Instagram and wanted to learn more about fitness as a firefighter because I want to be one in the near future after high school. After having read some chapters I've learned a lot not just about maintaining physical fitness but about firefighting as well. I plan on going down to my local station and showing the book to the firefighters. Over all I'd say it's an amazing book for those wanting to be a firefighter or those who already are.
Great book
Such a great book. It's good for everyone because it starts right from the beginning of what you should know about firefighter fitness. To be functionally fit we need to know how to get the most out of our work outs. And it has pictures! It's a great resource for any firefighter.
Lays a great foundation for optimal firefighter performance and health!
Overall, this book has great information and suggestions for firefighting. It's a book that is easy enough to understand (for all those non-exercise physiologists and dietitians) for potential recruits through experienced firefighters. As a student and practitioner of firefighter fitness/wellness, I can tell you that the information provided in the exercise section of this book is backed by more studies and research than you might expect! There are dozens of pictures depicting proper body mechanics from lifting to stretching. Something I was surprised to see were old-school style of static stretching along with a number of fantastic yoga-style compound stretches! On the nutritional side, it does a great job of emphasizing a balanced diet and hydration (majorly lacking sometimes!). However (my only gripe), some of the statements about saturated fats (especially those from animals) are questionable. This book is well thought out and should be read through at least once. It's to the point, easy to read, and will hopefully convince potential and active-duty firefighters to enhance their fitness and well-being!
10/10!
Fantastic book that helped me understand what I really need to focus on to become a better, well balanced firefighter. Nutrition, self-care, exercise - this book has it all and breaks it down to be easily understood. I highly recommend it!
Great resource
I’m an athletic trainer in the sports medicine field beginning to work with tactical athlete and public safety populations. Although a lot of the info was review for me, this book is a great resource to understand the demands of the firefighter profession and daily tasks they must perform. I will continue to reference this book for a long time.
Motivator, life changer
This book is not just information, workouts and tips. This book is a motivator. Even if you do not use everythung in it, just sitting down and reading the passages helps you get your mind set right and get back in the game. Thru my journey it has helped me thru some rough times. I had lost ir but now its back in my collection and I couldnt be happier
Getting fit one chapter at a time
I love this! I can not wait to become a better firefighter! I did not give it five stars because I was hoping it would be more of like a workbook type of layout, track meals and workouts BUT this book offers soooooo much insight and has rekindled my dreams of being the best firefighter on scene! Thank you!!!
A must read for those seeking to gain optimal fitness for fire service!!!
This book has helped me focus on exercises needed to obtain optimal fitness for a career in fire service. It breaks down the various physical duties of a firefighter, how taxing they can be on the body and why being in top shape is extremely important. Best purchase I have made in a long time
As someone who is not yet a firefighter but just at the beggining of their journey I am sure just part of the way through this book that this was money well spent. The concepts in this book are all easily applied to your training and having them all in one place is huge. I look forward to incorporating this book into my training so I can have a long career in which I excel at my duties as well as a successful retirement from that career where my body can still enjoy life.

Great Book for all Firefighters
As an older firefighter, I was looking on finding a new way to get myself back in shape. This book is well put together covering everything from how each part of the workout is used including different exercises to use to nutrition and hydrations. I have communicated with the authors and they are very helpful in answering questions.

I haven’t had the book for long, but it’s definitely opened many doors and allowed me to dive into practical exercises that are beneficial to being a successful first responder. Thank you!
A journey begins
This has been a book I wanted so I can help prepare for the journey I am starting. Thanks for the great read and will hopefully post some before and after pics to show how good it was
Practical & Motivating
For awhile I've been saying I want to get into better shape. FFF gives me a game plan and motivation since the exercise is directly related to firefighting. Also I like learning the reasoning behind the specific exercises to make me a better firefighter.
Every day is training day
I've been waiting for this book for over a year. I've been a follower of the authors prior to buying their book. They are both highly respected and regarded in the field. What makes it great is that it's written by Firefighters for Firefighters. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). I enjoyed the straight forward approach. It flows well and was enjoyable to read. Covers the Why, What, and How, to proactively approach your conditioning and fitness. Easy to follow, Big 8, 4 Pillars, 10 Commandments, and a call to action. I like that there is no special equipment needed, you can do this with what's already at the firehouse. Chapters with tips on lift, carry and drag (Injury prevention is so important). Nutritional tips that are realistic and easy to incorporate into your routine. I am sharing with my brothers and sisters, I highly recommend this for all firefighters.
Five Stars

Excellent book. I'm someone's that had no idea what to do in the gym so I just avoided it completely, firefighter functional fitness makes it easy and breaks the tasks down for any fitness level to understand. All firefighters or potential firefighters should read and live by the pillars outlined.

Accessible, easy-to-implement advice.
This book is well-written, easy to understand, and backs up claims with data. It's an evidence-based manual for improving on-the-job fitness as well as overall health and well-being. The sample workouts are a great starting point for creating your own and don't require much equipment. If you're at a firehouse, you have everything you need already. Strongly recommend.

My go to fitness book for setting and completing goals
This book has provide its self very useful! It is my go to fitness book to create my goals each week and how to meet those goals. This book has been very helpful in my career path to become a firefighter
An investment toward career longevity
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to become a healthier and more effective firefighter. The material is presented in very sensible and easily understood ways, emphasizing a balanced approach to total health and fitness. Several quite ingenious ideas are presented for adapting gym equipment to be used in ways that are more functional for firefighting, and the provided workouts are very well laid-out. The simple self-assessment they provide, to gauge what intensity level to start working out at, is very handy. There's great information on nutrition, hydration, and rest, all presented with eye opening facts about how many of us need to improve in those areas. Firefighters of any age, no matter how well conditioned or deconditioned, will find something in this book that makes it worth more than the purchase price to them.
Yes! You DO need this.

If you are or want to be in the fire service, you need this book.
Excellent material and tons of good information.
I'm a volunteer firefighter at a combination department (paid and volunteer) I've only just started into this book and it is amazing! Tons of good information and motivation. I definitely love what this book offers and highly recommend for my fellow firefighters no matter your fitness level career or volunteer anyone can benefit from this book.
Excellent
Very easy to read. Provides an explanation on the full realm of fitness, from the physical work to the diet to the recovery. For everything that you're told to do, there is a reason clearly explained for it. Best part is being able to cherry pick exercises and tips to add into your existing routines.

Great book. Love the message of the book.
This book should be the standard when it comes to firefighter fitness!
The job of a firefighter is extremely physically demanding. In order to be successful, at the most basic level, you must be physically fit to do the job. Dan Kerrigan and Jim Moss have created, what I consider to be, the "bible" of firefighter functional fitness. The keyword here is "functional". There are a specific set of movements and physical elements that we perform as firefighters that the authors call the "big 8". They also go into detail and breakdown the "Four Pillars" of firefighter functional fitness; 1: Physical Fitness, 2: Recovery & Rest, 3: Hydration, and 4: Nutrition and Lifestyle. Not only do they discuss the principles involved, but they give a practical approach in showing you how to construct your workouts and what elements to include. If you're aspiring to become a firefighter or are already one and are looking to build a solid foundation on how to build your personal fitness and mindset in order to be successful on the fireground, then this book is for you! There are few books that I continually reference once I've read them, but this is one that I am constantly pulling down and revisiting! Buy it, learn the principles, and put them into action!
Wish I'd had this sooner!
I was so excited to get my copy last year, and I've had the opportunity to discuss portions of it, as well as the philosophy behind Firefighter Functional Fitness with the authors. Dan and Jim didn't disappoint. Although I'm not yet a firefighter (though that's my career goal), I started in volunteer fire-based EMS, which was close to it except for being trained to put out fires. At the time, even though I was in my mid-20s, I was nowhere near being in great condition for my volunteer duties; I wasn't morbidly obese, but was creeping towards falling over the edge into "overweight" territory for my height. At 133 pounds, most of it fat, that's fairly heavy for a height-challenged person like myself, and my lifestyle and eating choices combined with lack of exercise weren't helping me. Unfortunately, it took separating from the volunteer fire department and emergency squad to finally move past the myopic views that had kept me from seeking knowledge, information, and personal improvement outside the four walls of the firehouse. A few years after that separation happened, I got to meet Dan Kerrigan and Jim Moss through social media. When they began to formulate Firefighter Functional Fitness, first as a series of articles and workout options, then compiling them into the book I now have, I was interested in finding out just how their workouts differed from what I was utilizing, which happened to be mainly isolation-style bodybuilding exercises with some random cardio sessions thrown in. Jim explains things like the need for flexibility, endurance, rest and recovery, ways to build cardiovascular endurance, proper nutrition (after all, firefighters are athletes, too), and the need to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Dan became a master of Russian kettlebells, and he describes a myriad of exercises to help with increasing muscular strength and endurance as well as elements of the fire ground like better forcible entry, raising, dragging, and carrying capacities. Although most would find this a very quick read, I took longer to finish reading because I would read, then re-read, various sections to better understand what the authors were putting forward to me, the reader. I also had various questions to put to them through online chats regarding how to improve one element or another, or get suggestions on how to perform an exercise, get more rest, or hydrate properly. The "Big 8" consists of eight functional fitness elements that firefighters need to perform well in order to be effective on today's fire ground. They are, as follows: 1. Core strength 2. Cardiovascular capacity 3. Flexibility Five elements of muscular strength, endurance, and power are broken down into these categories: 4. The lift 5. The push 6. The pull 7. The carry 8. The drag These all rest on the first of 4 "pillars", which is physical fitness. The other 3 consist of hydration, rest and recovery, and nutrition. Jim and Dan cover a lot in the book regarding all 4 pillars, as well as the Big 8 fitness components, including examples of exercises and how to perform them. However, I've found I've learned a lot more by going beyond what's on the pages and asking either of them, or both, directly about a specific question I've had and gotten some excellent responses that have helped me tweak or change completely what I'm doing to improve myself as a functionally-fit aspiring firefighter. The highlight for me was having the opportunity to meet Jim Moss and Dan Kerrigan at Firehouse Expo 2016, in its inaugural year in Nashville, TN and listening to them explain, in person, what Firefighter Functional Fitness is all about, what it's done for them and what it can do for those of us who choose to shape our workouts, eating habits, and lifestyles around its principles. There's even a bonus section at the back with information for the fire chief who wants to overcome organizational barriers to fitness so that he can have a more combat-ready department, not only in matters of operational training such as putting out fires and making rescues, but being physically fit and prepared to endure the rigors of the fire ground. Wearing 50+ pounds of turnout gear and dragging hose or victims, or carrying tools up a flight of stairs, is not as easy as they make it look on "Chicago Fire"; that's Hollywood. The reality of it is that it takes a lot out of a person and, even after 20 minutes of firefighting activity, a firefighter can feel very physically drained. The authors have also included information about a PAA (physical agility assessment) for fire departments, answers to questions regarding why it's important to conduct them annually for interior firefighters, and suggestions on how to set one up with fire ground-specific tasks that members must complete within a certain amount of time or else they're not deemed physically fit to be an interior firefighter unless they make necessary changes to their lifestyle habits. This is recommended reading for everyone from the day-one probie to the 30-year fire chief or veteran firefighter. The purpose of Firefighter Functional Fitness is to ensure that every firefighter is fit for duty in every aspect of their lifestyle on and off the job because it's important to "train like you fight, and fight like you train." What I like about the book, as well as what I've learned from asking questions of the authors, is the fact that they promote a balance of everything in all 4 pillars and don't go to any extremes as far as what they expect from those who use the book to tailor their workout or nutritional regimens, nor do they promote one form of exercise or one diet over another. The key lies in moderation, giving the body adequate nutrition, rest and recovery, and hydration before getting in that workout (or responding on that second-alarm fire). The exercises and workout plans in the book take into account fitness level as far as how many times a person should work out every week, even suggesting a week off to give the body adequate recovery time before hitting it hard again. From personal experience, I've had to learn not to do so much high-intensity interval cardio training, or else I may end up putting more stress, and wear and tear, on my cardiovascular system than necessary. The exercises contained in the book are not set workouts, but act more as building blocks which can be used to build a firefighter's workout and can be used interchangeably on various days so the workout is never the same two days in a row. The research that Jim and Dan cite backs up what they're explaining to the reader and demonstrates the level of knowledge they have on the subject of functional fitness for firefighters. Acute cardiovascular incidents are still the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service today, even though job-related cancer is quickly catching up, because the fire service is still generally unhealthy. However, we are beginning to turn the tide and, hopefully, this book will make it into the hands of more firefighters, fire officers, fire chiefs, and even firefighter candidates, all of whom want to be able to give many years to serving the public before enjoying a long and happy retirement. If you are considering purchasing the book, do it! You won't regret it. It's an outstanding read, one that you'll come back to again and again for "fitspiration". And tell Jim and Dan that I sent you! ;) Good luck in your Firefighter Functional Fitness journey! ~ Christine
Put A Copy In Every Firehouse
Received my copy the other day and dove into it relaxing pool side the other afternoon. What an eye opener! It's amazing how many firefighters must lose their lives to cardiac issues and still the majority of us will do nothing about it. Dan and Jim tackle this problem head on in an informative and entertaining way. Reading and implementing the ideas and exercises in this book will make you think "why haven't I been doing this all along?". Nothing complicated, easily implemented and most of all if you have been living a sedentary lifestyle and eating way too much putting just some of the exercises and ideas this book offers into use will benefit you greatly. If you have been working out for years changing up your routine with some of these exercises will absolutely take your fitness and flexibility to new territory. Make a commitment to your family and yourself, pick up this book and don't just read it LIVE IT!
I highly recommend Firefighter Functional Fitness.
Firefighter Functional Fitness is a must own book for every firefighter! The Authors of this book, Chief Dan Kerrigan and Lieutenant Jim Moss are living examples of this body of work. I have read several books and how to guides over the years and I highly recommend purchasing Firefighter Functional Fitness. Both Authors have exemplified the pages of this book in their everyday commitment to health and fitness for the profession of the fire service. Read this book and become the best version of yourself. Follow these authors as they continue to improve the level of fitness for the fire service. This book is more than just a guide for optimal firefighter performance; it is a way of life that is quintessential for longevity in this profession. As a former professional athlete, seasoned career firefighter and an educator in the field of public safety, I highly recommend Firefighter Functional Fitness.
Train and Be Fit!
This book emphasizes the importance of being physically fit for the job that does not discriminate. Fire is dangerous and training is vital. However, being physically fit is just as important as the training, which this book does an incredible job describing and focusing on. We can know what to do, but if we can’t physically do it, what good are we. Thanks Dan and Jim, you guys did a fantastic job with this book! Definitely highly suggested for firefighters everywhere! Great guide to training smart for the job.
This book has changed my mindset towrds what it means to properly workout for the job of being a firefighter. Prior to this book I followed work out plans id find online and always felt in pretty good shape. However, through this book I have been able to develop my owns plans using the big 8. I have found doing this to be much more beneficial to my over all fitness level, energy level and performance at work and on the job. The book more than anything has changed my mindset. I have shared it with many of my co workers and would recommend it to any Firefighter at any level of fitness.
Great book for someone who is new going into the fire service to be prepared and ready.
This is a great book that gave me a roadmap to becoming physically and mentally prepared to become a firefighter. I just recently graduated from the fire academy and this book helped me a lot going through it. Whenever I was struggling with an area whether it was; hydration, becoming more flexible or becoming stronger to complete a fire ground task I could open up this book and it would have the information & knowledge I needed, all I had to do was apply it. I highly recommend this book.
The best Investment into your Future Health
I've been in the fire service since 1987, just a few years, and this is one of the best fire department related physical fitness "how to" books I've ever read. Its an easy read, easy to understand, even comes with pictures! The "reasons why" certain exercises are done makes perfect sense and the different ways to do them is even better. The authors also conduct educational classes with practical sessions mixed in to reinforce what they are teaching. I drove 3 hours each way, up hills and through the September Maryland snow to take their class. A great time and a wealth of knowledge in this area of fitness. A+++++ well worth the little money it will cost to invest in your future health.
Life Saver
It's thanks to this book on fitness that I have completely redone how I workout and train. It used to be in a t-shirt, shorts and sneakers, until I read this book and I realized that when I'm on scene I'm not wearing those things. Now workouts mimic activities found on scene, and I can say without a doubt that my performance and endurance while on scene have significantly improved. Thank you so much!!!
Firefighter Functional Fitness...it is life changing!
Firefighter Functional Fitness by Dan Kerrigan and Jim Moss is a game changer. I believe that we have to have a foundation in our physical fitness focus and this book nails it. I am into firefighter competitive stairclimbing and the HIIT and Core workouts focused in the book really help make a difference in bringing my time down. The breakdown of the Big "8" really explains in detail the proper techniques involved. I look forward to each shift I am on at the fire station and I have my copy of the book with me in the gym. I will build upon functional fitness and Dan and Jim will be a huge part of it! Thank you both for writing this book, you definitely will save our brothers and sisters lives!
Potential to become the Firefighter fitness bible
I have always been active most of my life, participating in martial arts, strength training, track, & basketball, but once I made the switch to firefighting I wasn't sure which type of workout to do. Firefighter functional fitness is definitely a game changer! The type of workouts provided show you that some overlooked aspects of training are needed for firefighters (mainly flexibility). The book is an easy read, nothing overly technical, also makes firefighters take a look at themselves and opens your eyes to the fact this a career but more importantly a LIFESTYLE. I would recommend this book to guys on the job, off the job, trying to get the job, or ANYONE looking to become functionally fit. Ask yourself "Would you want you rescuing you?"
As a leader in the fire service this book helped me set the example
Simply put, this book works. From practical workouts, routines and food suggestions this should work for anyone who applies themselves. While geared for the fire service everyone can benefit from it. After about 5 months of following this book, not eating like a horse and yes working out everyday because I needed a change I was down 30 lbs and now at the 10 month mark, 44 lbs down, some good weight back on I’m 164 at 55 yrs old. Again easy to follow and it works
Its not personal, it is professional.
Showing up out of shape is unacceptable. Its not personal , its professional. This book is full of useful information irregardless of whether you are experienced in your fitness or starting out. Really emphasizes work related fitness. It is a great read and a wonderful tool for anyone in the fire service. You owe it yourself, your family, and to those you've sworn to protect to keep yourself ready.
EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS!!!
I was hesitant to read this book at first because I just figured it was more of the same fitness information that I already knew. I am glad that I decided to open it up and give it a chance. Yes it is filled with fitness info along with much more. I really enjoyed how the book was organized and put together. I look forward to implementing what I have read and sharing it with the guys I work with (150 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise a week). I highly recommend this book to both the beginner as well as experienced firefighter. Thanks again Firefighter Functional Fitness!
Dan and Jim have provided us with a wealth of information and knowledge that firefighters need to better prepare themselves ment
Firefighter Functional Fitness is the fire service book that has been missing from my shelf along side the latest Strategies & Tactics and Fire Officer Leadership Skills. Dan and Jim have provided us with a wealth of information and knowledge that firefighters need to better prepare themselves mentally and physically for the challenges we face with our line of work. From the rookie to the Chief, you will benefit greatly from this regardless of your current level of fitness. We tirelessly train our minds to learn the dynamics of fire behavior, adequate pump pressures, and how to force and manipulate every type of door we encounter. It is time now to start focusing some of that effort and train yourself to be firefighter fit. AB Turenne - Electric Boat Fire Department Groton, CT
So Excited!
I've been waiting for this book to be available and I couldn't be more excited! There isn't anything else like this for firefighters. The authors are really doing what they can to ensure we all stay fit, healthy and be the best we can be when we show up.
An outstanding book!
An outstanding book! Dan and Jim knock it out of the park with this practical and easy to follow book to improve the functional fitness of today's firefighter! Dan and Jim give real world advice and simple exercises and lifestyle changes that dramatically improve your ability to safely respond when needed. Great as a gift to the firefighter, or aspiring firefighter, in your life or buy a copy for yourself! Dave Cline Deputy Chief
A must read!
I actually won this book in a giveaway. This book is loaded with tons of useful information. I've totally revamped my workout schedule because of it. I've seen alot of preformence improvements from heavy lifts on ems calls, to everyday fire ground activities, and training. Our job requires a higher level of fitness. Make sure your doing your part to properly serve your community and give this book a read! -Jeremy J Newman Firefighter/EMT Idaho Falls Fire Department
Long and Healthy Career
Great application of the word fitness. One thing I really like about this book is that it emphasizes fitness at all levels regardless of age, gender, or current level of fitness. It’s unrealistic to expect an individual to make a transformation from being out of shape to looking like David Beckham overnight. This book focuses on continued work towards improving ones fitness level and ultimately having a long and healthy career in the fire service by taking a very encompassing approach.
Get some!
Our fitness is a matter of life and death for others. That's why training and fitness is vital. However, many are lost in how to train and workout to be better firefighters. This book will help educate, encourage, and correct in the area of proper health and fitness for firefighter's. It is packed full of practical information on exercises, nutrition, and how to implement it all in your department. This book is a must read for any wanting to get in to the fire service, rookies, and those who have been in the service for years. Honor your oath and earn your Maltese everyday...get this book. Devour it. Then get after it!
If you are serious about firefighter fitness, you must have this book!
I have been listening to Firefighter Toolbox, and other podcast for awhile and that was how I first learned of Jim Moss and Dan Kerrigan. When I heard they were writing a book I knew I must have it! The information in this book is easy to read and follow. I have really taken firefighter fitness seriously for the past few months after being promoted and wanting to set a better example. My journey in fitness has not been easy, but the rewards are truly amazing! I have lost 55lbs and 4 pants sizes since taking fitness more seriously and a large part of that is following the plans found in this book! If you don't have a gym, that is not a problem, because if you have a fire engine and tools on it, you have a firefighter functional fitness gym! If you want to be fit, and ready for anything the job will throw at you, buy this book and follow the advice and programs in it, you will not be sorry!
"The more we continue to choose "recliner time" over "fitness time" the faster and deeper we will dig our own graves."
Dan and Jim did a great job with this Text. "The more we continue to choose "recliner time" over "fitness time" the faster and deeper we will dig our own graves." Great stuff! I really appreciate how they addressed more than just training as well by including the "4 Pillars" Fitness, Recovery, Hydration, and Nutrition. Its all much needed information in the fire service, and we can all do better in addressing all of the "pillars." If you are a firefighter and want to gain fitness relative to your job this is a great resource. -Paul Roberts Firefighter Gym Jones Coach
Complete guide to achieve success
Best book for working out for anyone even if you are not a firefighter. I love that everything has been described and explained to let you understand why and how. Workouts are indicated step by step but more important, lets you play with your own creativity so you can build your sessions with what you have at home, gym or fire house. I am 2 weeks in and I feel improvement cannot wait for the 6 weeks milestone. 5 stars all the way! Thank you so much for all the research and hard work you guys put in this book!
Awesome if your planning on becoming a firefighter (like me) or if your already one!!!
If your getting ready to take your state physical exam or just trying to stay fit this is the book for you! Functional is an understatement, you can do this workouts anywhere! If you dont have the equipment with you, no worries you'll still feel the burn! This book is a MUST when preparing yourself for the fire service! Thank you
A good reference guide
This book is a practical guide for firefighter fitness; the most valuable aspects of it are the authors are actually firefighters, seasoned ones at that, and they have the longterm career viewpoint in mind. If you are interested in fitness, it likely won't provide any whoppers of knowledge, but it will reinforce what you have come to learn. I appreciate the authors and their entire philosophy, which is the betterment of firefighters in general. Their book, in combination with their social media, has been a great motivator for me and given me some new tools to make fitness more approachable for myself and my coworkers.
Love this Book!!!
The authors outline a fitness program that will take any firefighter, no matter their level of training, above and beyond their current fitness level, while laying down a foundation that leads to athletic lifestyle that a firefighter should embrace. The authors know their limitations, like nutrition or yoga, but they also lay a strong foundation that leads us to grow in our understanding and seek to increase our knowledge in all areas of our fitness journey!
A must have!
This book literally goes with me everywhere I go. It has become sort of like my bible in my journey to becoming an [elite] firefighter. I highly recommend and endorsed this book to anyone interested in becoming a firefighter; even if you are already part of the fire service you need to read this book. Yup! I said “endorsed” because I am a ‘no bull sh*t’ type of person and I would not recommend anything I don’t believe in wholeheartedly.
More than just working out; recommended to ALL firefighters
Great book that covers so much more to fitness than just working out. I felt that when it came to physical fitness I stood out pretty well. However I’ve learned how much better I could be if I focus on the other pillars, especially recovery. The Big 8 is an awesome concept that I’ll be implementing more into my routine. I highly recommend this book to any firefighter, whether you’re going through the academy or have 15 years in. We can all get better and make those around us better as well
Outstanding firefighter supplement
I've been a firefighter for 9 years and I consider myself to be advanced with regards to fitness. This is one of the first firefighter fitness books that has taken my knowledge to another level. The authors do a great job explaining injury prevention, hydration, and tips for new exercise moves. It's a must have for anybody in the fire service looking to have long lasting fitness
10/10
Fitness isn’t an option in the fire service. It is your job. As a fireman, you’re held to the highest of standards in everything you do, especially fitness. Wouldn’t you want a firefighter that’s strong enough to pull you from the flames?? This books helps you being the fireman!
What Can I Say, I Really Like It.
Here is what I can say about this book. The author is a man who is courageously committed to increasing the strength and health of the firefighter population. And so he has concerned himself with getting down the rudiments of fitness and making them accessible to anyone. His methods are blue collar and basic, and well researched. (They are also fun.) His approach general and specific. You'll get fit over broad domains with the concepts in this book, yet prepare your body in a particular way just for firefighting - he has done a great job of that. As a fitness professional with many friends in the field, I intend to recommend this book to all of them, as I am recommending it now, to you.
Going into every Firehouse in my city!
This book is HUGE! I thought it would be a smaller book, its got something like 300 pages of fitness material! Very well written to! This book is a must for every firehouse in america, I know I'll be placing them in all of my Firehouses for my city. This book really breaks down fitness for firefighters to a super simple level. Its not just a book with a bunch of workouts (although those are in here) it covers the why and the need of "functional fitness" for firefighters. Many firefighters think that getting on a treadmill for 30-60 minutes is great fitness. WRONG and these guys teach you why and what to do to make yourself a top Firefighter candidate.
A book to use your whole career!
This is a great book to have whether you want to get in firefighter shape, starting a program at your firehouse or are a PT Instructor for your recruits. This book uses functional movements in workouts that one would be using on the fire ground. As a PT Instructor myself, I tend to refresh myself on certain movements and workouts to introduce and use during our recruit school. I highly recommend this book.
Awesome Gift
My daughter wanted this book, and now that she has it, she absolutely loves it! It was for sure her favorite Christmas gift. Since she's been reading it, she has learned a ton and so have I just based on what she's told me from reading. It's amazing, a super great book and extremely worth it!
A must for your bookshelf!
An outstanding book addressing a vital part of the profession - Fitness. The authors have clearly shown they have a passion for the betterment of their fellow firefighters and a strong foundation of knowledge in the trade to back it up. If you want to build the fitness to survive in the fire service - this the book for you, if you want your fellow firefighters to be able to perform at their highest level - this the book for you. The perfect gift for a firefighter but also a must for your personal bookshelf.
Good Information
While the book tends to be repetitive and wordy, the content is excellent. More charts, fewer lectures would be my preference.
Its the best way to get in firefighter shape
This book is everything i was expecting. Its the best way to get in firefighter shape. I am a person that doesnt know an awful lot about fitness and this book has helped me alot. I am recovering from surgery on a labrum tear in my right hip and the core exercises along with the stretching has done a great deal for my recovery. If you are a firefighter career or volunteer this book is a must have. Thanks to the authors for spreading their knowledge and leaving the fire service better than they found it.
Awesome book!!!
Great book very informative and great for beginners! Everything is explained in detail. Great for the firefighter that wants to learn the purpose and reasons for each exercise. I recommend every firehouse to have a copy!!!
The Gospel for becoming a better fit firefighter.
If you are looking to build muscle, and sculpt your body, this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking for ways to improve your workouts to revolve around firefighting operations (career, or volunteer), then this most certainly is the book for you! Many helpful tips and workouts to make you more agile, fit, and build overall body strength to help you improve your physical ability on the fire ground. Every firehouse gym should have a copy of this book in it, or very close by!
This is a must have tool for the toolbox
This is a must have tool for your firefighter toolbox. Jim and Dan has put so much great information about functional fitness in this book that it was hard for me to put down once I started it. I am now passing it around to the other members of my department to read because I believe fitness is a key role in our tedious and strenuous job we do and the force we exert on our bodies at any given time fulfilling the orders we are given. I believe every fire department should have a copy of this book to get people motivated and excited to maintain or begin their fitness regimen Thank you Jim and Dan for this great read!!!!!1
Occupational Athlete
A fitness guide that all Firefighters should own. It breaks down the importance of fitness, nutrition, rest and hydration, and most important examples of each ( like your own personal guide) I decided on taking my fitness to the next level, hence the “occupational athlete” Title , One should always train like their life depended on it, (which it does). I recommend this book whole heartedly!
Transformational and life changing.
Very practical information about fitness and the fire service. The authors are firefighters and their experience and knowledge for the fire service and fitness add immeasurable value to this book. It’s a great way to get in better shape for a specific purpose. A must have for every firefighter (or anyone else in any profession who desires to better their health and life).
Good information, terrible binding quality.
I received this book as a gift, shipped from Amazon. The information in the book is useful, especially for those who have a hard time putting together a solid workout routine. Unfortunately, the binding quality is terrible. The book immediately started falling apart and it is unusable in the traditional way that books were intended to be used.
Muy buen libro
este libro a ayudado a mi esposo a cambiar sus hábitos alimenticios y a aprendido a ejercitar en forma práctica y eficiente para su área de trabajo.
Great book for firefighters looking to enhance their fitness for the job
This book is a must read by all firefighters. As a lead instructor for the fire-rescue program at the local college, I'm looking into making this book a part of the curriculum for the fire-rescue students. This book has validated what I have been doing for my workouts/trainings over the past few years. The information contained in this book is very accurate as what is needed in order to perform the tasks as a firefighter.

Fire fitness
I’m honestly speechless at how good this book was on fitness and not just any kind of fitness but firefighting fitness it’s helped me a lot in my fire training very good guys.
Amazing!
I loved that this book really appeals to all those in and wanting to be in the fire service. It educates individuals that being strong or having the best endurance doesn’t make you a great firefighter but rather the functionality of both and science to back it up! This Book is a hot topic in my city department, and I see why!
Fire Service Fitness
A great book for everyone in the fire service and a must read for anyone starting out in the fire service. I have been utilizing Firefighter Functional Fitness as the reading requirement for a college Fire Service Health and Fitness course since it was published. It’s an excellent foundation for fitness in the fire service.
This book is an amazing all round guide
Before reading this book, I understood that it was important to be physically active, to be in shape, but did not really know where to start. I was a gym wanderer, from one machine to the next, not stretching, not warming up, and also not watching what I was feeding myself. This book is an amazing all round guide! Great information, to the point, and great illustrations!
I would also highly recommend it to any first responder that needs to be ...
This book is a must-have for every firefighter! I would also highly recommend it to any first responder that needs to be regularly active during shift. Great full, comprehensive guide on how to get functionally fit for the job and how to stay there. Jim and Dan have left no stone unturned! I'll even be grabbing a second copy so that I can have on on-hand at home and at work.
Great book
As a CrossFit L-1 I find that this book gives me more tools for training me, and my colleagues. Great reference to have available!

Find a workout (related to the job we do) and a lifestyle (proper nutrition, hydration) that will increase your ability to do your job and prolong your retirement.
Best book for firefighters
As a volunteer firefighter I really learned a lot from this book! I highly recommend it! Good training exercises and information about health for firefighter.
