Facing The Lion is an inspiring autobiographical account of a young, non-Jewish girl standing up for her beliefs in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform to the Nazi propaganda machines. Simone refuses to accept the Nazi party and her simple acts of defiance lead her to be persecuted by her school and local officials, and ignored by friends. She is put in a harsh reform school until the end of the war.

Survival Beyond All Life!

This book celebrates how a young girl who loves her family, her country life, and above all, how she loved her God, Jehovah! Highly recommended to any who think the Second World War and the Nazi Terror on common people was faked! Jews, Jehovah's Witnesses, and ANY that got in the way were persecuted horribly, yet this beautiful little girl makes you believe in true Godly Compassion and can even bring a tear to a Man's eye!!

Take note - this is the abridged edition!

Great story! A real-life account of a young girl's experiences with Nazi Germany. Her point of view was different from many of the other real-life accounts I have read. Each person's experiences are valuable as we look back to that very traumatic time in human history . I highly recommend this book, but take note there is both an unabridged and abridged version. Either is worth the read, but I did very much enjoy the extra details added to the unabridged version.

A MUST READ!

It’s has been one of the best secular books I have read. It has caused a major impact on me. My feelings churned and my Faith strengthened. Forward you Witness!

My beautiful spiritual sister.

What a courageous family. The horrors they went through along with many other loyal lovers of Jehovah. Their stories are a great encouragement for us when we face trials now and during the great tribulation. Trust and faith in our heavenly father will get us through whatever comes before us.

Awesome book!

This is one of the most touching books I have ever had the honor to read. It is very human, very real and Simone Liebster does a wonderful job telling her story of when she was a little girl facing tremendous pressure by the Nazis. As a young child she was separated from both of her parents and taken to a "re education" center where she was supposed to realize that her beliefs were wrong and accept that she could have a better life if only she rejected her faith. She remained firm in her convictions. A very good read for anyone looking for a touching "real" story!

Gripping Memoir

This is a gripping true story of faith. I’ve had the print version for several years and wanted to get the digital version.

Bought it. Read it. Intersesting

I had read a short article several years ago, as related by Simone Arnold-Liebster. Now, I'm very pleased to have purchased the kindle edition of the book. An avid reader, I am not. But, once I started reading this book, it was difficult to put it down. I read it in less than a month, in my spare time. And spare time is not something I have lot of. Thank you Simone for making me more keenly aware than ever just how important it is to keep a strong relationship with Jehovah and to stay close to those who do the same.

Outstanding book with pearls of wisdom throughout

This book is not only a book of faith and courage but contains amazing pearls of wisdom. Parents can certainly learn from some of the wisdom imparted by Simone‘s parents. Simone had an incredible amount of wisdom and character especially for someone so young.

Unflinching and Compelling Tale of Integrity

I've read dozens of books on the Holocaust and you can rate Ms. Liebster's right up there among the best. 'Facing the Lion' is Simone Arnold Liebster's personal account of a long struggle to maintain her integrity in the face of unrelenting persecution by the Nazi state. As a young girl Simone makes a sincere decision to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses and in a few short years, the idyllic world she grew up in is turned upside down. Taken from her family in an attempt at 're-education' Simone endures several years of hardships, some of which moved me to tears. The author writes with tremendous feeling and her style of prose is outstanding. The thing I find most compelling is that 'Facing the Lion' is never 'sugar coated' and you never forget that Simone's struggle to remain faithful is exceedingly difficult. You never get the sense that Simone is a religious fanatic. Even as a young teenager, it is clear that her decision is made with complete soundness of mind. And when you find yourself sometimes wishing that she would just sign the papers that would have given her release, you are ultimately moved by the moral stand she takes. A marvelous book and well worth your time.

A favorite book!

One of my favorite accounting of the WW2 atrocities. The war in scene through the eyes of a preteen child and still holds a feeling of innocence. Yet, you get a feel for the times and the prevailing attitudes in the land. And though Simone's faith is challenged, she never loses faith in God. Truly a touching and inspiring story.

Faith In Action: A First Hand Account Of Nazi Opression

This is the most incredible account of a young woman's trials during the rise of the Nazis in europe. It rivals the diary of Anne Frank, but has a much happier ending. More importantly, this is a story of faith. Anyone who has any belief or faith should read this account. There is a powerful message delivered upon the observation and first hand account of a child who a been persecuted and subjected to inhumane treatment because of her beliefs. We can all learn something valuable from this child's faith.

A++++++ READ

Wonderful first hand account! Love this book!y three daughters read it as well, I bought 2 paperback copies and the digital! If you have not read this, you need to!

Courage

For anyone who appreciates a story of courage i recommend this book. You can be young yet strong in your convictions and thus defeat the harshest of enemies. Love conquers all

Captivating

This was a very captivating read for me. True story of trials and triumph in a young girl's beliefs. Would definitely recommend to everyone that wants to stay determined in their faith.

Inspiring ..

Integrity under excruciating circumstances is possible, even for our young people. The book highlights the value of parental training at a very young age in a life lived fully in service to our God. Simone tells her story in a way that is forthright, captivating and encouraging. An excellent history lesson, including in the appendices.

Facing the Lion

The book starts with the warm family and beautiful, idyllic natural home that surrounds this girl. As Hitler came to power, his regime gradually squeezed all of this from her. However, her faith, even at a young age, helped her conquer even the worst conditions that ensued. I great book for younger readers and older ones alike. It inspires hope and courage.

A must read!!

This book was truly amazing!! I enjoyed every word, and as a person who does not do a lot of "pleasure reading" I was amazed that I could not put it down, I finished it in 2 days!! Those who have accepted pure worship, and have come to understand the truth from God's word the bible will have appreciation for this little girl who at such a young age decided to accept Jehovah as the only true God, and to worship him to her death if necessary. The truth in the Gospels shone through when she and her mother aquired a bible of their own and realized that the teachings they were learning at church were not accurate. Her strength and conviction and complete trust in Jehovah is an example that we all do well to follow as the end of this system draws ever so close, we do well to keep examples like Sister Leibster in the front of our minds as we enter into our time of persecution. This book will strengthen any person no matter what religion or background you may be, I am glad that I had the chance to read about a fellow believer who stayed faithful, and I am reminded too, as we all should that African American decendents, Homosexuals, Gypsies, the mentally and physically disabled, Jews, Jehovah's Witnesses and many more suffered together as a human race. We hear so many accounts of certain religious groups being tortured under Hitlers regime, this book reminds us that not just one but many groups suffered, and we may feel inclined toward the suffering of one group over another, however, they were all people, strong people, and this book reminds us that the ones who suffered were mothers, fathers, someones sister or brother, child or grandparent!! That is what you should remember when you finish reading this book!!

Amazing

Breaks my heart and lifts it up at the end. Has changed my perception forever. I could not bear to put this book down until I finished it. Absolutely a must read.

Moving

Beautiful Faith strengthening I'd recommend this book to anyone, whether a Witness or not. Touches the heart and leaves you with hope.

Five Stars

love this book, amazing story

A True Story of Courage and Faith Under Pressure

This is a story of a young girl who is one of Jehovah's Witnesses and is caught in the crosshairs of the Nazi oppression. She maintains her faith despite being separated from her parents and treated with cruelty. The type of brutal treatment that she received often equates with severe emotional trauma later in life. However, the power beyond what is normal kept her in balance. This power testifies to the existence of a Creator who truly cares. I believe that is her message.

Outstanding examples of faith and courage under the most trying circumstances

Truly an amazing and inspiring account of how a young child had the determination and faith to withstand relentless opposition and cruelty by relying on her God Jehovah and coming through it all victorious! What a sterling example for all sincere lovers of truth!

Amazing and a must read.

How such a young girl was able to stand up for her faith. This is an amazing and yet honest account of what it was like to face a lion.

An Inspiring account of a triumphant and indomitable faith

This moving account through a child's eyes recounts how atrocities to humanity were and can be overcome by faith and love. It presents an inspiring and empowering choice that we to may make - to embrace the hope gifted to us from a most trustworthy source, our loving Heavenly Father Jehovah.

A must-read for everyone.

From a happy childhood, through the horrors of a world war, and onto a rich and rewarding life Ms. Arnold-Leibster shows us all how hope and faith in our Allmighty Creator can help us to cope with life today.

Wonderful

Love this book! Such a wonderful read. It's so sad to hear the things she went through but good for her in keeping Jehovah close to here and obeying him through it all!!! Wish this was the full version though.

shows how amazing the human spirit can be with Gods help

Brutally honest. The depths of depravity that humans can sink to and the unreasoning hatred that takes over people takes your breath away The fact that faith was so strong and a love for the bible and it's teaching is what sustained them inspires me to be more zealous in my study of Gods word. We never know when we will need what is in our memory and the relationship that we individually build with Jehovah to up build us up and keep our sanity

I was so happy to find a unabridged version

As a Jehovah's Witness, I have seen this book float around my whole life. I was so happy to find a unabridged version. It's a wonderful testament to a young girls faithfulness and loyalty to her God. During one of the darkest wars in History.

Very Inspirational

Insightful look into the mind and perspective of the young person. Stay true to yourself and hold fast to your convictions based on truth. I highly recommend this book for both the young and old.

Inspiring.

I purchased this book for a friend. This book is inspiring. Excellent read.

Courageous Story

I love this book! Provides education on our history and pours out faith, courage and love on every page. Simone and her family are an inspiration to all.

The real lion

Excellent publication… So endearing… From the voice of a child… An excellent read for all of us of courage and conviction❗️❗️❗️

A heartfelt story, definitely an Eye opener!

I would like to have known that the book is abridged

I would like to have known that the book is abridged. I really wanted unabridged but they run about $100.00 or more. Therefore I would have ordered this book anyway. I am pleased!

Enlightening Perspective .

I liked the historical information surrounding this horrific time in history. The German perspective from this courageous young girl and her family was enlightening.

Faith Strengthening Book

Absolutely amazing story -

Very good book.

I loved this book. Really opened my eyes as to what happened to our brothers and their families during the war.

A courageous young girl in Nazi Germany

I greatly enjoyed this book! The author writes in a very candid way about her life as a child in Nazi Germany. As Germany becomes a Nazi state with tremendous pressure on everyone to conform without question, she very well tells the story of how her family goes through a change of religion, to become Jehovah's witnesses, and gain strength to remain true to Bible principles in spite of very real threats and punishments inflicted on her family and finally on her personally when she is taken away to live alone in an orphanage where human kindness was extremely rare, especially to anyone who chose to stick to their principles. Her experiences and the courage shown by her and her whole family are very inspiring!

Exceptional

If everyone in the world had the courage and integrity of that little girl to stand up for what we as human beings know to be right, despite persecution, the Holocaust would have never taken place

A must read

Any Jehovah witness should read the ups and downs of emotions while under persecution. Simone remembed well the personal battles she won with Jehovah's help. We don't know what the future will bring but how she got through May help others.

Compelling read for those who "Don't Give Up" 2017

Thrilling, compelling read for any who have dedicated their lives to uphold Bible truths. Recommend for young and old truthseekers.

Awesome!

For a previously owned item, it looked amazing! Slight bends on the hardcover corners but the inside of the book looked brand new!

Incredible!

Absolutely riveting and faith strengthening. What a fine example of strength and courage for all serving the True God, Jehovah.

Bad for a twenty year old turned off from reading this

Inappropriate

Awesome memoir of childhood during the Nazi era

i thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you are interested in the Nazi era and wonder what the children experienced this book is for you. While Jews are the most well known victims of the regime ( I'm Of Jewish decent), this book chronicles the experience of a child of Jehovah's Witnesses that was separated from her parents.

Excellent Read & History

well written documentary on how Jehovahs Witnesses were persecuted durring WW II by the Nazi Regime. Interesting how persecution could be avoided by denouncing their Faith which they would not do.

Tears in My Eyes

What a legacy of faith and endurance! I can only hope that I will be that strong when troubled times come upon us again.

I was so inspired by the courage and conviction shown by Simone and the joy she experienced despite what she endured

Faith

What an amazing example of courage and loyalty. The integrity and deep faith of those dear people is truly remarkable.

Read and learn

Fantastic book. Everyone should read. It clearly tells of the treatment of Jehovah's Witnesses under Nazi rule through the eye of a girl that lived it.

WONDERFUL STORY OF HEROISM

Would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about good winning over evil. I have read this book to our three daughter when they were young and then to my 5 grand daughters. Every once in a while I pick it up to read it again for myself. Enjoy.

This book is so very encouraging. It shows that ...

This book is so very encouraging. It shows that even young ones can stand firm in their faith, and stand up for right principles. I only wish this book was available in England and I didn't have to order it from the States.

Great book.

This book was full of inspiring spiritual faith. I felt that the faith that came from all the family members was incrediable, but the faith Simone showed was breath taking. Great book.

very faith strengthing

Facing the Lion describes the faith a younth girl has to resist the demonic Nazi regime. At a young age she was taken away from her loving parents and placed in a reform school that tried to make her conform to their wishes. It has inspired me to remain faithful to my beliefs regardless of the consquences.

Great read

Good read

A lesson for all of us

The book helped me to appreciate the freedom that I have . She and. her family were true to Jehovah as I hope I will be if I find myself in the same circumstances.. they were brave and they stuck together. I look forward to meeting her in the resurrection. Actually, meetings the whole family. We have a lot to look forward to.

Excellent example of faith and loyalty to Jehovah God!!!

Beautiful heartwarming, encouraging and faith upbuilding. Great example of true love and faith towards Jehovah. Clarity, honesty. emotions expressed in words. The goal for all that worship Jehovah may is to keep loyal to him with a clean conscience.

Superb!

I thought this might be dreary and self-pitying, but it wasn't. It was poignant and sad in parts, yes, but written with a courage and matter-of-factness that I enjoyed. Interesting to see this part of history through the eyes of a child.

As described, timely shipping.

Very pleased with the seller. Item as described, and the shipping was really fast. Thanks!

Faith inspiring!!

The story of Simone and her family is faith strengthening. Their faithfulness to our Heavenly Father, Jehovah, is proof that we can remain faithful despite any attack by Satan & those in his power. What joy their faith must have brought to Jehovah.

She seems very happy with it

I got this book for a friend and haven't read it myself. She seems very happy with it. I did see some of the pages and the print looked kind of small.

Jehovah gives to those asking...

Very faith strengthening!!! Would definitely recommend this book to others!!! This era needs to be explained to the younger generations & then have this book read to them. It will help them realize that no matter how small the prayer, Jehovah gives to those earnestly asking for his help. Also, the ones that endure through this race for life will reap the richest of all blessings!

Awesome book

I thought this was a paperback. I want to return it for a refund. I can't seem to find out how.

A True Story of Courage and Faith Under the Nazi Regime

This is a true story of a courageous young girl from Alsace Lorraine and what happened to her during WWII under the Nazi occupation. I was able to obtain a used copy and only wish that it would be reprinted again. Vivid memories of her happy childhood in Europe also contribute to this wonderful story.

Lovely Paperback, Sad Yet Powerful Story of Resilience and Dedication to Jehovah God

My book arrived in perfect condition and faster than expected. I can't wait to dive into the story of a young girl who professed her devotion to Jehovah God while enduring the critical times during Nazi Germany and it's regime.

Yet, you get a feel for the times and the prevailing attitudes in the land. And though Simone's faith is challenged, she never loses faith in God. Truly a touching and inspiring story.

Facing the Lion

Awesome faith inspiring book. Nevery bought such an expensive book Totally worthi it as it inspires integrity, faith and courage

I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in knowing how ...

This book tells a story of a young witness girl who kept her faith in the face of very harsh treatment. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in knowing how Jehovah's Witnesses were treated during that most horrific time in history.

Very encouraging of how a young girl stood for her ...

Very encouraging of how a young girl stood for her values and kept her integrity to her God Jehovah despite the Nazi Regime and the nuns trying to break her.

Five Stars

Just started reading

Empowering,

This book highlights the power and value of hope. I enjoyed the writing from a child’s perspective. Faith building. Bravo

Memorable

Unforgettable true story that everyone should read! All JW's should read. Disturbing history but very faith strengthing at the same time.

Amazing

Such a good example and so faith strengthening. I am encouraged by endurance and faith of our dear friends and will lean in these examples in the times to come.

Five Stars

This is an amazing book, this young girls story touches your heart!

Strength and faith

Beautiful story of survival while remaining faithful to the Lord against all odds. Presents Jehovah's witnesses as the only faithful doctrine, but otherwise, great book and story. Very inspirational and uplifting.

Interesting reading article

Still reading this item I was told about it and actually have enjoyed the first couple of pages.

Inspiring! A wonderful read. I recommend it and gift it to every young person I know. It teaches courage, integrity and finding focus in life.

Five Stars

A great example of a young person remaining true to her principles in defiance of the Nazis.

As one of Jehovah's witnesses I was able to feel the love for our God come through.

I would recommend this book to all my brothers are sisters in the truth. I know that it will strengthen their faith

Lovely book

What a strong book. Full of faith and so encouraging. Jehovah will sustain us with peace and little vitamins when we need it.

Very inspiring!

Great read

It is the best book I have ever read, I shed tears and felt so bad for the things she had to go through, I just hope I can be so steadfast if ever there is persecution of the JW's in this country.

Five Stars

Excellently written.

Easy to read

Easy to read. Very evokative giving a detailed picture of the experiences she had and the suffering of others at this dreadful time.

Love this book!!!

Great book, well written and heartwarming

true courage

Great book even better because it is a true story no one can deny the horrors that Satan visits on this world, We should all have the faith that this woman expressed throughout her life not just during the war simone lived her entire life this way. The average person would crack but because of true faith her, her husband & almost 7000 other witnesses survived the nazis.

Very inspirational. This book takes an inside look at a Witness family's traumatic experience during the Nazi era, in what is predominately known as persecution of mainly Jews. Their strength and faith is unshakable. Definitely renews my faith!

Amazing

Heartwarming, encouraging, and inspirational! A story that reveals the inner strength and faith materialized amidst adversity through the blessing of Jehovah's holy spirit.

2 Thumbs Up

This book was heartwarming and extremely inspirational. It's shows how the strong faith of a very young girl gave her boldness and courage even against the Nazi Regime. I would highly recommend reading it.

MC

This is an outstanding book. It shows how important it is for parents to train the children early in the way they shoud grow up. This girl was not baptised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses but she conducted herself in an a manner that showed she had dedicated her life to God, (Jehovah)>

Facing The Lion

Incredibly faith-strengthening. I am recommending it to all my friends. Shows how everyday humans can triumph over evil with Bible knowledge and holy spirit.

This is an inspiring book and encourages all to endure adversity with courage. What Simone remembers about her mother and how her mother counseled her is a good example for all mothers. I couldn't put it down!

Her love for God is what saved her

The book is an example to all parents that whatever religous morals you teach your children and show them by example will help or hinder them when they face difficult times.

Her fortitude is amazing

So much appreciated this young girls strength. She had excellent training and shows what each of us can do if we stay close to God.

Simone's story was so encouraging. Every young witness should read this. Even in youth, our children can take a stand for Jehovah and their brothers and sisters.

Excellent Book is getting harder to find in Hardcover

A hidden gem, worth it’s weight in gold!

This is such a great book!!! Most reviews have already covered what I would have pointed out. But what I will say is that this story (that of also many others living around the same time and under the same regime), shows 1) why man cannot rule itself, and to the inhuman extent that a government made up of imperfect people can go when it takes the place that legitimately belongs to a higher power 2) the motivational power of true faith, a good parental education and the shear goodness inherent to mankind, and finally 3) how love can truly overcome and forgive and forget (remembering without pain or resentment) just about anything in life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing such an amazing and faith-strengthening account. It truly touched my life.

A testimony to faith

In just a matter of days, I've completed reading what I consider to be one of the most moving books I have ever had the privilege of reading. It touched me deeply, personally...beyond mere words. "Facing The Lions" is an autobiography written in the voice of a young girl, Simone Arnold. Growing up in Alsace (a location on the French/German border), Simone is an astute and happy child surrounded by a close-knit and loving family. In time, her parents become Jehovah's Witnesses and Simone too makes the personal decision to embrace the faith with a fiery zeal and enduring fervor beyond her years, that would make any parent swell with pride. However, WWII is just around the corner, and trouble strikes when the Nazis annex the bordering French territory of Alsace, the home of the Arnold family. The Bibelforscher (Jehovah's Witnesses or "Bible Students" or as they were known then) in all of Nazi Europe are quickly put under ban. Being conscientious objectors in line with the scriptures' admonition "You must not murder", the steadfast Bible Students did not support the war effort in any way whatsoever. They refused to "Heil Hitler". As a result of their bible-based beliefs and their neutral standing, thousands of Jehovah's Witnesses were sent to concentration camps to suffer cruelly at the hands of the Nazi regime. Even though the Bibelforscher were given the opportunity to be released if they "simply" renounced their faith by signing a legal document, these ones remained steadfast and unmovable. Because of their unbreakable allegiance to God alone, and not the state, they became targets of the Nazis' rage and even their fellow citizens. However, their beliefs and firm reliance on Jehovah God helped these students of the Bible endure the oppression of the camps, some even to the point of death. As unwavering "Bibelforscher", the Arnold family was not immune to such horrors of the war machine. Soon after the war's outset, Simone's father is arrested and is taken away to the Dachau concentration camp and thereafter the infamous Mauthausen. Shortly after Simone is extradited to a strict Nazi reform school, her mother and aunt are also deported to the Schirmeck and Gaggenau camps. "Facing The Lions" is full of heart-rending experiences as Simone recounts physical and mental abuse at the reform school by those who outwardly and secretly conspired to break her spirit. Yet, Simone maintains her strong faith amidst such persecution, and throughout maintains her spiritual and moral conviction. Excerpts from personal letters, documents, photographs of family and detailed drawings by the author herself serve to personalize the events, making for a poignant vicarious experience. Inspiring, encouraging...this moving life story of a courageous and steadfast young girl has added to my respect and admiration of my rich spiritual heritage; and to all those, including Simone and her family, who struggled courageously to endure man's inhumanity to man.

Reality Check

I found the book both inspiring and informative. In a world gone mad this woman painted a picture of a young girl trying to make sense of it all while fighting not to become just another victim. Her strength while facing impossible life decisions inspired me to review how I personally handle stress in this time of relative peace. As a young person, I had read the Diary of Anne Frank and was deeply impressed by her resourcefulness. Unlike the Jews during Nazi occupation, Simone Arnold could have chosen not to be tortured for her beleifs. Her family could have chosen to remain together and compromise. Yet they didn't. They held on to values in a time when there were few to be found. I think everyone, young and old, would benefit from comparing their convictions with the history of this amazing woman.

Inspirational

I was so overwhelmed by the excellent writing of this autobiography, that I only took two days to read it. The historical facts, emotions, persecution, conversion of religions, - everything was so very vivid and inspirational. I was raised a Jehovah's Witness and then took the wrong path for awhile but now I have come back and I am planning on baptism this year and when I read Simone's story - I cried and asked Jehovah for forgiveness for being so closed minded as to believe that I have had it hard because it pales in comparison as to what so many people had to go through when Hitler was alive. I have read other stories, been taught in school the so-called "facts" but when someone like Simone writes as well as she did - it is truly awesome and brings it right into your own home. The best thing I love about it is that I know we have examples of Jehovah's love and forgiving natures, wisdom, and power through the scriptures and we have real people giving real life stories of persecution and sacrifice but they are all dead and have been for a long time. Simone is still alive and this was actually a recent event (considering the age of the stories in the bible) and so many people today ask me "Why has God left us, deserted us - He provided so many miracles before Jesus died and now He shows us nothing" well this real-life story is a perfect example of Jehovah's love and guidance and that He is with us everyday and provides us with blessings and miracles more often than not - so the next time someone mentions that they are alone or have no reason to believe in Jehovah, I will ask them to read this book before they set their opinion in stone. She strengthened my faith beyond words. I recommend that everyone read this book - no matter what faith you are - and pass it on.

Love of God, our Creator, triumphs over Hitler, pain, and torture

I have read this book between six and ten times. It is a book of encouragement to see the life story of this little girl over a few years of her young life. Her love of God and her family. Her loyalty to God's Government and wanting to please her Creator. It was an eye opener to see what people endoured and are still endouring in some countries today because of loyalty to God instead of men. I cannot read this book without crying, not only at the pain and suffering, but tears of happiness over the total loyalty to God. It is faith building and encouraging. Not including the Bible, it is one of the best reads for anyone who truly loves God.

Outstandingly beautiful!

The experiences all of it touched my heart and was really faith strengthening! Helps me to endure now and to the upcoming great tribulation! Thank you Simone for your wonderful experience! I thank Jehovah most especially for sustaining you all and blessing all your efforts! Would now be more determined to copy your example to remain steadfast and faithful despite difficulties and hardships!

Excellent read

Well worth reading. Such an encouragement to me those who stand strong for their beliefs.

A great lesson in developing a Conscience

Facing the Lion by Simone Arnold Liebster is not only a great book for Jehovah's Witnesses to read, but for everyone with pre-teens. Simone goes into great detail on how she develops her sense of right and wrong about all sorts of day to day issues - honesty, morals, etc. I especially liked the part where she explains how her parents handled her when she took some money to buy a doll for a friend without asking permission. She writes from the child's perspective which can give parents insight on how their own child can be influenced by peer pressures and how to better inculcate higher standards in their children. Additionaly, this book is a must read for all children that face peer pressure on a daily basis as Simone gives all sorts of ways to cope and refute such pressure. The fact that it is written during the Nazi takeover of France only increases its value in the lessons to be learned. My teenage son is currently reading this book and has already found several experiences of Simone's, helpful for him to say NO, firmly but kindly, to issues going on at school. The other great item that this book has, is a lot of the original letters going back and forth from the camps, as well as the legal documentation that Witnesses were asked to sign denying their faith in order to be released from the camps. Many other books have referred to the paper the Witnesses could have signed to be freed but none have ever actually shown the wording. Very powerful material to show how brothers and sisters of all ages kept their integrity to their beliefs.

A Side of World War II rarely heard about

I do not spend much time researching nor reading about WWII but one thing I have noticed is the lack of information on the groups persecuted during this time frame. Even rarer is the plight of the children. Having known many Jehovah's Witnesses I see why this book is so strengthening and enlightening. This was a autobiography of a little girl in Nazi Alsace. She talks about how her dedication to Jehovah strengthened her, encouraged her, and gave her hope when the people turned against her because of her love for Jehovah. Miracles like in Bible times do not happen now but there were miracles performed in Alsace that kept Simone and her brothers and sisters strong in the face of the Lion even to death. Nothing is more courageous then standing firm agianst persecution on account of your love for your God.

An important and inspiring book!

This book paints a portrait of life under Nazi rule that most people would otherwise never see. We are all aware of the treatment of the jews in world war II but this is the first book I've read concerning the treatment of Jehovah Witness's during this time. I knew very little about their faith when I started reading this book and even less about how they were treated by the Nazis. This book was not only informative but the story is very compelling and very hard to put down. The writer has a wonderful writing style and many times I felt I was actually reading the thoughts of this young girl as she struggled on a daily basis with her life as a prisoner while at the same time tried as best she could to live a life that her faith required.

Simone's story recounts victory over tragedy

Simone's story is honest and heartening, a tale of spiritual and moral victory over the tragedy of the Holocaust and Hitler's third reich. This wonderful little girl would not, could not, and did not compromise, and suffered greatly for it. Her two years of "reform school" from age 13-15 were an inordinately large part of her short life, and that right at puberty, an exquisitely sensitive and formative time. Her great love for her father and mother and the respect for what they taught her carries her through, all of this in the context of her devotion to God and her religious beliefs. Like myself, most of Jehovah's Witnesses have for many years been aware of Simone Arnold and other Witnesses incarcerated during the Holocaust... Simone's story is all the more important forits length, depth and breadth of scope, including her psychologicalinsights. Facing the Lion is unique in that it tells us about a child, but morethan a child, a child on her own. At least my relatives and the majority of Witnesses incarcerated during Nazi times had each other in their barracks. Highly recommended reading for young people and their parents.

Creates a picture of life in Alsace-Lorraine

Simone Arnold Liebster creates a vivid picture of her early life pre-World War II. She's a fierce-hearted, loyal and caring little girl who buys treats at the bakery to share with her hungry school friends. As she grows, so does the Nazi threat, but she is unbowed by the attempts to force her to compromise her integrity. This is an absorbing story that I did not want to put down. There are some fascinating appendices included which feature information about some of the concentration camps.

Hope is an anchor

I loved this book. The example of Simone and her parents and so many others gives me strength. Who knows what the future brings, but having their example in my heart strengthens my faith.

Good Read

I enjoyed reading the life story and experiences of Simonne. Her example and the way she dealt with the religious persecution she faced made it a a very faith strengthening story!

I have read this amazing book of the ultimate example of how to resist ...

I have read this amazing book of the ultimate example of how to resist the trials of persecution in the Nazi war and I can't wait to get my newest copy of it having misplaced the last copy in a move...if you want an example in courage this is the perfect book...

Engaging Required Reading

Addictively engaging. Required reading for all, including parents & children. Reads like a Jane Austin novel.

Faith Stimulating Encouragement

I stumbled onto a site recommending this great autobiography, ordered it and was left in wonderment at what we can learn from the experiences of one of such tender age. Simone will long live in my memory and took me back to the days of my youth when I first saw the film "The Diary of Anne Frank". I remember walking the streets in deep meditation. This publication should be on the 'must read list' of youths and adults and anyone caring about their fellowman. I have since ordered another fifty-two books and I'm gifting them to important persons in my life. Drink deeply on this material....and be prepared to ENJOY! I'm pleased to see it now available through Amazon.com. Thank you!

Of all the books talking about this period of history ...

Of all the books talking about this period of history, this one is different in a sense that you feel what she felt from the eyes of a child with no judgement. Very encouraging, and inspiring. I also bought her husbands book "Crucible of terror", and wow what a couple.

Couldn't put it down.

I read this one in a day. Easy read. I especially liked the fact that it tells Simone's whole story, not just the bad parts. I enjoyed hearing of her life before and after the Nazi era. As a parent I found an excellent example in her parent's training of Simone. I suggest everyone should read this one. I encouraged my teenage daughter to read it and she did. Her faith as well as mine was strengthened. Simone proves you do not have to be superhuman to do the right thing.

Faith strengthening. And shows how forgiveness can heal.

Strong and Emotional a Must Read

This story will change your life

This book is so faith strengthening, it will change your life, change the way you view the world. It tells through a child's point of view what she had to go through...from a happy care-free childhood into persecution and despair. Torn away from her parents and into the mouth of the "lion," this is a story on conviction and strength. It is a must read for anybody. I am not a reader, but this book has absorbed and consumed me. It is beautifully written. I could envision myself there and feel what she felt. It has opened my eyes to what real persecution is and how we all must strengthen ourselves to stand up for what is right.

Facing the Lion : Memoirs of a Young Girl in Nazi Europe

A fascinating read. Never wanted to put it down. The life experience of not only a young girl dealing with the Nazi regime, but the experience of someone standing up for their beliefs, no matter what the cost. Also, this book shows the importance parents play in the moral and character development of a child. We learn that Simone, even at an early age, could not only identify truth, but make a solid decision to hold firm to what is right even though it meant persecution for herself and her family. There's much one will discover about themselves as they read this book. Definitely add this to your list and your children's list of "must read" books!

OUTSTANDING autobiography!! Please READ!!

This book really touched my heart and it kept me thinking way past the ending when I put it down. I really loved the mother and father in Simones life and the personal integrity that they had inculcated into the little girls heart. Be prepared to go to a place in the past that will never be forgotten. Very well written and even though i had read it several months ago, I still find myself from time to time thinking of the caliber of people in between the pages of this book. It is definitely a re-readable book!!

Unbelievably Good!!!!!

Wonderful! A must read!

The faith of a little girl

I was very impressed that a girl of just 11 years of age, taken away from her parents and put into a home could continue to have such faith in God and her religious views. Especially when her parents were both put into concentration camps and she had little likeley hood of ever seeing them alive again. I especially liked the honesty and the way she expressed her feelings, even after meeting her parents agian. It is a book that stimulates faith and helps a person to see that even under such a terrible dictatorship how even young people can stand firm for their faith and how Jehovah God supports them.

Incredible Experiences

Having just finished this book, I am amazed by the courage and endurance shown by the Arnold family. I would have thought that the emotion would surface as I read through these horrific experiences, however the true, deepest emotion and appreciation for the people in this book came as I finished the last page. As I read this book, I asked myself throughout "Would my own faith stand up to such trying times and circumstances?" If anything, this book has strengthened my resolve to remain faithful under trial.

Tearful and heartfelt

I found this book to be a very tear-jerking book and loved it. It took me only three days to read the book and helped me to do a school report. Simone was a girl just under my age and I could not imagine going through something like that. I have often wondered how Witnesses made it through that terrible time. I have come to realize that God does give us the strngth to carry on and that he gave Simone and her family that strength as well. This book was a very good book to read and I would recommend it to many.

A moving and vivid account

This is a truly moving book. I was given a copy by a friend, and was enthralled. I couldn't put it down. I want everyone I know to read it. Such a fresh persective of the Nazi regime. From a young girl that was "delinquent" because she would not be molded by the Nazi machine. The triumph of good conquering evil, in a seemingly unwinnable fight. Thank you so much for your story Mrs. Liebster.

Captivated

This book gripped my attention from the very beginning! It was wonderful to hear the story, of the Nazi terror that swept Europe, from a young girl's point of view. Through her, Simone, it was clear that true faith triumphs over evil in that not only did she remain firm in her beliefs, but they could not make her hate her fellow man. It was a testimony to the truth of "...out of the mouth of babes and sucklings you have furnished praise?" Matt. 21:16.

$196.00????

This is a wonderful, wonderful account, I've read the book and given it as a gift over a dozen times - why is this book priced at $196.00? Is it signed by the author in gold?

Five Stars

This book is wonderful.

LIFE - - thru the eyes of a "little??" child

The memories and emotions of a girl, could only be put into adult words as she grew up. What a world it would be -- if all children were raised as she was. Religion that can affect children so powerfully; deserves a second look. I have not read a novel since my school years 33 years ago -- this one, I cannot put down. It will be "required reading" for all my girls.

Facing The Lion: Memoirs of a Young Girl in Nazi Europe

This is a very encouraging book. It stresses the importance of integrity, and the seriousness of our paying attention to ourselves to keeping our spirituality secure. It champions accurate knowledge and truth. It puts a hightened perspective on cheerfulness, humility, fatigue, and pain. Reminds us of challenges which we have not yet faced but could at any time.

Endurance of young ones undergoing extreme persecution

Clearly a heartrending account of what effect our spiritually training our children from a young age can have on their resolute determination to maintain faith under the most extreme conditions. The Truth prevails in this true real-life account of the brutal attempts to 'break' the resolve of this young girl.

Life-Changing

If you read this book you will find yourself asking "Do I have conviction and strength of this little girl?" It is a gift of introspection for all who pick it up. It will change how you view the world!

Facing the lion

This book shows hope in life..Even if your suffering is not the same. Pieces and prayer in any religion you are serving

extraordinary courage and faith

I recommend this book to people regardless of their religion. It is a shining example of the human spirit. And how good can triumph over evil, even when a world has gone mad.

Great inspriational book!

Loved the book- great reading for faith-strengthening and appreciation for those that have truly struggled to keep their faith! Very informative and hard to put down!

The book was in perfect shape.

Thank you so much for sending me a book that was in perfect shape. The book is nice and clean. Thank you again.

Important first-hand account, with supporting documentation

September 2009 marks seventy years since the outbreak of World War Two. The passage of time makes it ever more important that those who witnessed the events of that terrible era, commit their experiences to paper. Such accounts, along with supporting documentation where available, help to preserve truth and to form a bulwark against "revisionist historians". This account by Simone Arnold Leibster is a very good example of what can and should be done. As a little girl growing up in Alsace-Lorraine, (a region it has been my great pleasure to visit) Simone's parents became Jehovah's Witnesses, and Simone learned and followed their Christian faith. The early chapters of the book describe their happy, loving and nurturing family life. While the pace of the early chapters may seem a little slow, these chapters are important in building a detailed picture of life as it was then, and in showing in detail the developing effects on people of the looming Nazi war machine. The refusal of Jehovah's Witnesses to become part of that war machine brings the break-up of Simone's family, as her parents are arrrested and she is put into a centre to be "re-educated". The re-uniting of the family at the end of the War shows that the horrors they have each experienced left each of them emotionally deeply scarred. This is very well described in the closing chapters. The developing changes in the attitudes of people around the start oif the war are very well described. It is particularly useful, too, that Mrs Liebster has a generous Appendices section, with background information about Alsace-Lorraine, and official documents relating to her and her family. The extract reproduced from her High School Biology Textbook is particularly fascinating and chilling, showing how attitudes of racial superiority were fostered in schools. Reproduced school class photos, and family letters, are very touching. It's important that this book was written, and especially interesting and important that such good supporting historical and family documentation is included. As the World War Two generation ages and dwindles, it is to be hoped that others with stories to tell, and personal documents to support them, should get them onto paper, and published.

An amazing story

An amazing story, made me cry. We’ve no idea what it must’ve been like in one of those horrendous camps.

a moving and faith strengthening account

Recommended reading for all who serve Jehovah, especially good for youths, makes us appreciate the freedom we enjoy today and also helps us to be prepared for the future.

Great courage and faith

Could I cope with such challenges? The love of family and faith in God shines through each experience. Like the life of Job when tested the Arnold family were rewarded with good things when their faith held out. A good biography of what was endured by a young child.

excellent service by both of them - 5 stars

simone liebster's story is an inspiring account. It teaches all of us to not just blindly follow the crowd but question ourselves as to why we believe what we believe. only then are we able to stand up for it. as to delivery and service by both bookstore "Paulv books" and amazon: excellent service by both of them - 5 stars!

Compelling

Hard to put down. Beautifully expressed and amazing courage of someone so young yet her faith was what got her through such difficult times

A Relevent History Lesson

A True life story of courage and faith. Now at the age of 86 Simone is still serving her God Jehovah.

Uplifting and a real encouragement !

What a truly remarkable insight into life during the Second World War. A story to rival The Diary of Ann Frank - a lesson of courage and loyalty

Five Stars

Fantastic book. Couldn't put it down.

Important first-hand record.

Elapsing time makes it increasingly important for survivors of the Nazi era to commit their first-hand experiences to record. The more this happens, the better bulwark there will be against the claims of 'revisionist historians' Simone Arnold Liebster's first-hand account is an important contribution. It seems particularly useful as a record of how attitudes came to develop and change. Of great interest, for example, is the facsimile of her official school geography book, which referes to the 'different species' of humanity. As a first-person account, this work necessarily dwells on the Author's own family situation, but it's little the worse for that, though perhaps the pace is sometimes a little drawn-out in the earlier part. This is a valuable addition to holocaust literature.

Simone is an example of great courage and worthy of our imitation when facing opposition ...

Simone is an example of great courage and worthy of our imitation when facing opposition from bullies young or old.It was very interesting to see how even her aunt became a Jehovah's Witness because of Simone's steadfastness.May none of us ever experience any atrocities like what the Jehovah's witnesses,Jews and others did during the reign of Hitler in Germany and Stalin in Russia against those that they referred to as extremists.Russia is still treating Jehovah's Witnesses and some minority groups in a similar way today.Shame on them

Heartfelt and relatable author

Hard hitting story of oppression of innocent people due to prejudice and injustice. Excellent for study of herd mentality and it’s effects on unsuspecting people. Excellent stimulus for higher order reasoning and critical thinking.

Amazing faith helped them survive!

Every survivor has their unique story, this one is exceptional! Showing tremendous faith helped her survive. Heartbreaking and faith strengthening at the same time!

Very interesting book!

Very good book for anyone who needs to find courage in the face of oppression!

Must read!
