Move over traditional sightseeing, throngs of visitors, and tourist traps! Explore Europe on Foot gives travelers an alternative way to discover Europe. A hiking vacation offers countless rewards: the time to admire the tidiness of a village farm, soak in the rugged alpine view from a rocky perch, and absorb a country through the smells of its landscape and encounters with locals. Explore Europe on Foot is a complete guide to conceptualizing, planning, and executing the slow-travel hike (or hikes!) of a lifetime. Author Cassandra Overby tells you how you can spend all, or even just part, of your vacation enjoying scenery, small towns, and cultural experiences most travelers miss—all without carrying a big backpack. This guide offers all the nuts and bolts you need: how to choose a route that is right for you, how to plan, what to pack, what to expect, how to find accommodations and food, how to deal with challenges along the way, and so much more. Travelers will also appreciate overviews of fifteen long-distance trails in Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey, with itineraries that range from one to fifteen days. Excellent Resource on walking Europe

As I get closer to retirement I think more and more about one of my favorite activities, walking. In one of my favorite places, Europe. Initially I was only interested in this book for the dozen or so walking paths she describes but as I read the book I realized that it would be helpful for me in preparation for an extended walking tour. Even such details as the types of socks to buy, the type of towel to carry with you and so many more little details are spot on. Thank you Cassandra!

Wonderfully detailed and inspiring

I enjoyed Cassandra's encouraging style as she describes how to get the most of a physically active adventure in Europe. You will want to visit your local mountaineering store and renew that passport that's been gathering dust since before the pandemic!

Excellent all around travel book with focus on Foot Travel

I love this book! I saw Cassandra on an episode of Rick Steves where they were hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc, which inspired me to buy this book. It touches upon everything you need to know to do a walking/hiking tour in Europe. She highlights 10 of her favorite Europe walk/hikes but also covers how to get there, what to pack, how to pack, what to do to get in shape ahead of time, European customs, etc. I have done both traditional city sight seeing travel in Europe numerous times and once hiked in the Swiss Alps. I still found this book incredibly helpful and exciting to read!

Inspirational

We met Cassandra and Mac briefly for the first time during their travel through France and greatly enjoyed our time biking and wining around the beautiful city of Paris. I didn't know at the time what an amazing writer Cassandra is. For me, this book feels like an extension of some of the great stories they told us about their travels around Europe. At the time, my partner and I listened in awe and envy as they explained their planned adventures. And then the next few days my partner and I talked about how we could go about being in their 'shoes' but weren't clear on the path forward. It's an intimidating thought, especially going to countries where you don't know the language and trying to pick the best destinations among the thousands of options. I'm so glad I bought this book as it's the perfect collection of exactly how to go about that. Cassandra's stories and descriptions about the best walking trails throughout the continent are entertaining and incredibly insightful. Her advice and suggestions throughout are digestible and most importantly, actionable. Even had we not met them personally, the book stands by itself as an incredibly inspirational, entertaining, and thorough account of the best trails and best approach to walking them.

Lots of options when the world opens up

I’ve walked the Camino de Santiago over 7 different routes and was looking for something new…. Lots of new walks now..

Inspiration for future travels

I heard an interview of Cassandra with Rick Steves. She came across as very enthusiastic and passionate about hiking. That was the same feeling I got when reading this book. She highlighted a number of her favorite multi-day (and some one day) hikes in Europe. She included general hiking and travel tips and tips for each specific trail. If there was anything left out in this book, I'm not sure what it was.

Truly a comprehensive, extremely well-written book!

This book does a fabulous job of describing soup-to-nuts how to have a wonderful walking vacation in Europe. The author describes fifteen terrific walks that vary in duration from just a few days up to fifteen. The pictures, the writing, the breath of information about the countries, regions, accommodations, and trails are all top-notch. In addition to sections about planning and packing, she provides information about exercises to do for getting and keeping in shape. There's also a wealth of additional resources included, both Internet-based and beyond. This is easily the best book I've read on the subject. Way to go Cassandra!!!

Perfect book for that authentic European travel experience

This book is unique in the manner it encourages travel not as a regular tourist but a visitor giving you a more authentic experience. I found the trail descriptions to be enticing and very descriptive. The remainder of the book gives you all the tools you need to plan your trip. Loved everything about this book and couldn't put it down. I just wish I had more time so I could travel all the suggested routes.

I wanted more about the European trails and footpaths

There was a lot of general "how to hike" info in this book. I was really hoping for more of a guidebook for the hiking opportunities in Western Europe (with pictures and some tips on points of interest you might otherwise miss).

Would like more detail on the trips.

The book is good...well written, good pictures, interesting trips...but each trip is only given a few pages. I would have liked to have seen a bit more detail on each trip.

Great Guide for planning a European adventure.

I love love love this book! It has a great variety of hikes in Europe. She gives you just the right amount of info to get you going on your hike, but still be able to make it your own experience. I love the “Training for Trails” section. This with definitely be useful for our Spain hike next summer.

Thoroughly enjoyable!!

I actually bought two of these great books to give as gifts. Now I have to buy another to give myself. I have never traveled to Europe. "Explore Europe On Foot..." makes it seem completely do-able. The author, Cassandra Overby has created such an enjoyable and useful guide to hiking. Well done!!

Must-Have for Hikers & Adventure Travelers

This book is not only a great escape for anyone craving an adventure, it will also help you make it a reality. From what you should pack, to what you should consider when selecting your journey + destination, it'll lay out everything you need to know as you plan your next hike in Europe.

Great read and very informative!

So many great tips, tricks and nuggets of information. My wife and I have done multiple European vacations but can't wait for our next trip where we can try out some of these great hikes. We loved the idea of the extended Cinque Terre hike....a wonderful modification of the standard 5 town hike.

Great read and information!

My husband and I LOVE traveling every summer and just about whenever we can! This was a great read and an excellent guide to many of the places we've been and want to go! Two thumbs up!
