Great Phonics Practice Value
I have not used these to teach reading, but I am using to supplement and for extra practice. This book is wonderful for learning and practicing blends in many different activities. I think it is a great price for wonderful practice in phonics.
Encourages Independent learning
Perfect for my 5 year old after finishing Explode the Code Book 1. Previously she did Kumon Workbooks. We tried Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons and it didn't work because my daughter didn't like me dictating every single step. She loves how independent she is with this workbook, and I love it too!
Love this. but I found this cheaper somewhere else
I absolutely love explode the code. but I found it at christian.com for $6 after I purchased it on Amazon for $17
Recommend using every book in the series
We have slowly been working our way through this series. My daughter started with Ready, Set and Go for the Code books when she was 4. She is progressing through book 2 now, and is growing more confident each day. I highly recommend including the "half" (1 1/2, 2 1/2 etc) books as they provide lots of extra practice. We paired these workbooks with "BOB BOOKS" and some sight word flashcards for even extra practice. Really easy to use, simple program for teaching reading to beginners. Some of the pictures can be a little wonky, but that adds to the overall preschool feel of the program.
Very good phonics books
We love these books. I've used them homeschooling all 5 of our kids. There's also a 1/2 book to each level for more practice. The kids have always especially loved the silly sentence activity.
Great addition to our curriculum
My kids are obsessed with explode the code! They will often do 1-3 pages a day depending- but they truly look forward to doing this book! It is so simple but the review is exactly what they are working on in their language arts program so it is fit to age
Valuable resource for homeschooling!
This helped my son blend his sounds and work independently. He gained confidence as well. We’ve tried so many phonics programs and this one is the best!
Homeschool mom speaks out
These books are excellent. They're fun, thorough, and really drive home the points that young readers need. We are on our second child with these books, starting at A and working our way forward. I'd tried a traditional preschool curriculum but it just wasn't a direct approach that my son needed. These books give that approach and cover handwriting as well. Now that our daughter is using them I can truly see just how great they are. Plus they're generally inexpensive and that's a huge plus!
My kids love this book
My kids love explode the code! They do more pages than asked just because they like it. My oldest daughter is struggling with phonics so I decided to go back and recap the basics and it’s helping😊
Great workbook!
If your kiddos struggles with phonics explode the code is a great series to go through with them if you’re a homeschooler, or as an add on to give your kids extra help after school or in the summer.

... and I can not say enough about what a wonderful book series this is
I have used Explode the Code books for four years now and with three different children and I can not say enough about what a wonderful book series this is! My 6 year old son is using this book now and loves it. He can get a few pages done in under 15 minutes, so he feels a sense of accomplishment while learning valuable spelling and reading skills.
Great product!!
A friend had told me about these books and she was right!! They are amazing for doing homeschooling with your children. They have taught my child how to read much quicker than a few other programs I was using! Will definitely be buying again!!
Supplemental reading help
This was recommended to me by my son’s reading tutor. It has helped him.
Great series for struggling readers.
These are great books with a LOT of repetition. It is great if your student needs that extra reinforcement or has trouble remembering basic rules, this is our 3rd book with my daughter, as we are using the 1/2's as well, and she is doing much better. She can sit and do the pages herself now, as she has memorized the directions based on how the page is set up, she knows what is expected of her, and she is learning the new rules as she goes.

These books are amazing! I have been able to teach my mildly dyslexic daughter (now 5 years old) how to read using these books. We are now on book 4 and have been using them for just over a year. Prior to this, and even after using several other popular phonic reading methods, my daughter just could not make the link and blend letters into words, she could not even read and understand 'at' or 'cat' even after several attempts. But when I started using these books, the repetition and the general structure of the book somehow clicked with my daughter and she began to read. I am forever grateful! There are several exercises in these books that catch out typical dyslexic issues and helps the student to practice the correct patterns (I am a teacher, have worked with several dyslexic students and used to have mild dyslexic as a child that put me behind a couple of years and I can tell you its really hard to catch up with that initial delay, it takes a lot of determination and not every child will have that to overcome this disorder. Many teachers do not have the time or experience to work with dyslexic students and often a schools special ed teacher is overstretched, leaving a dyslexia student to keep falling further behind each year, so these books are very useful to help tutor your child and get them to a level of learning they might miss out on at school).
Effectively combines Reading, Writing, and Spelling
We have been working through Explode the Code and my 5 year old son is really enjoying it. There are many exercises he can do independently, however there is more writing than he has the stamina for. I usually have him dictate to me and I write in the book. Really good combination of reading and writing practice with comprehension and spelling interwoven.

My school resistant child loves these books. They are his favorite part of school and he asks to do them first. He has gained a lot in fluency from these books and they are working great for him! Highly recommended for struggling or beginning readers. Kid's really appreciate the drawings😊
Finally a program that makes a difference!
It's working SO well. We've got a struggling reader, and have been through so many reading programs. I was very hesitant to try yet another program, thinking that it couldn't really make that much difference. But it has! The teacher's manual is very thorough and walks you through step by step for each lesson. It covers the material well, making sure you don't have gaps in your teaching, is easy to use, and is very parent friendly. It isn't my sons favorite program. He doesn't hate it, but since he struggles so much with reading and writing, he doesn't really enjoy it either. However even he has seen a noticeable difference in his abilities and he is really enjoying that! We are just about to finish up book 4 now and will continue with the program. I would recommend this to any parent of a struggling reader!!
Love these books
I home school and am teaching the last of my five kids how to read. Love these books. They progress in nice, incremental levels. The student gets satisfaction as they figure out the words. I recommend this series to all my other home schooling friends.
glad i found explode the code
i originally worked on sounds with my young reader using flashcards and these books are so much better. it's a really engaging system and keeps him moving quickly to new combos which keeps him interested. i am really glad i found these books and rec them to anyone teaching reading at home.
Great phonics series
Love these! They make phonics fun and easy for kids. My 4-year-old (nearly 5) just finished this book and has improved her reading greatly by going through the program. We will start book 3 next week and can't wait!
Excellent for spelling skills
My son is an advanced reader but his spelling has always lagged. This was our first book and first try with Explode the Code. It's awesome. Each lesson gives him enough practice time to really learn the spelling of each word and memorize it. I'd highly recommend this to kids who can AND can't read well.
The best!
Love these books! My daughter is getting so much more from explode the code than she ever dogs from teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. It's quick and painless and spot on!
educational and the kids enjoy it!
very educational. We use these books for our children ages 5 & 7. The Explode the Code series has helped with reading and mathematics. Highly recommend even if just as a supplement to schooling, or let them just use them for fun.
Great books
These books are really helping my daughter read.
Explode the Code 2
Great book for my daughter, she is in first grade and has already completed the book we have Explode The Code (ETC)3 on the way. I do understand that they have ETC 2 1/2 however my daughter said this one was really easy for her so I want her to be challenged. I highly encourage to buy these books for your kids. I also have a son who is in preschool and He has already completed the book Get ready for the code and is currently working on ETC 1.
Thumbs Up
We love these books. My son works these independently, enjoys them and learns a lot.
Great books
These books were referred by our teacher and they’ve been awesome to use at home.
Looking back over the years--irreplaceable.
I have been using these books for 15ish years? Love them. Always do my due diligence on curriculum and cannot find anything better for decoding skills. Have had one child that needed some of the half books, and, others skip them. Had early and later readers, but, so far, all go to college early and do well. Good, solid program. Do not be discouraged if your child is struggling with reading, if your doctor has ruled out every issue. I have found that reading acquisition is like potty training or tooth eruption. There is an acceptable age range and it doesn't matter when you're grown when it happened. These books cover all the decoding skills very well, so you can be sure it isn't because there is an educational failure, if your child still isn't reading. I have also looked at the guidelines and skipped books for my developmentally ready readers when I knew they had the skills covered in that book. You know your child. Mine did worse when they had too much busy (easy) work. Maybe you do the half books, then, reading takes off, and you don't need them. Don't be afraid to use your judgment. Maybe you feel your child needs to do every book, just to be sure. I cannot say enough how easy it is to adjust the work to where the student is now, then adjust again for where they are later. Did I say I love this program? Check out the Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code books, too, and, don't forget the teachers' guide. You'll need that to complete the all-important "following instructions" pages, which I can't recommend you skip, even though there are only a few. To me, it was worth the expense.
Great phonics practice
Gradual and predictable phonics sheets children can follow easily.
love it!
So glad that I have this. Its great supplemental work and there are so many others who trust this for supplemental work. My son loves get ready, get set, go for the code and so this is a step up from there and i'm happy to have it.
Excellent phonics lessons!
Explode the Code books are excellent for teaching phonics! Makes it fun to learn. My daughter has really thrived with these and we will continue to use the entire series.
Really like these books
Really like these books, even though they can have some really silly art in them. It really takes that difficulty out of learning to read because it builds to naturally. I'll keep using these books!

This is the third book my daughter has done. Simple enough for her to use on her own, it reinforces her phonics skills.

Explode the Code is a homeschool must in our home. Great review and teaching without being too overwhelming for my reluctant reader.
Perfect for supplementing the self starter and homeschooling!
Explode the code books are a huge favorite in our curriculum selection. They are easy to teach with and easy for children to use and understand. While these books do not have colored pages our children still very much enjoyed them and were easily motivated to keep going. I used the Explode the Code Book 2 in the the 3rd and 4th quarters for Kindergarten and with my first grader through the summer. We highly recommend this book and all of the other Code Books.
Love this series!
My son has dyslexia and loves this series. Reading has improved tremendously!
We love Explode the Code
We love Explode the Code! Teaches so many concepts, but you don't even realize you're teaching them and the kids pick up on it so quickly.
Great for my Kindergartener
My little boy LOVES Explode the Code. We bought Book 1 when we started homeschooling kindergarten. We don't use it everyday, but he loves the days that we do. The directions are pretty self-explanatory, so he likes that he can pretty much do them on his own. We finished book 1 and now we're on to book 2. It's a great way to reinforce the reading-writing connection.
Great challenge!
This book is amazing! Lots of four letter words, but still a CVC sound, with blends. It is perfect for my advanced 6yo.
etc
Awesome books for my son. He is only 4.5 and reads sooooo well, partially due to this series! I can't say enough about this series!
Good learning books
Go for kindergarten

Great way to teach reading
Love this series of books for teaching reading and writing. Have used with many children and always recommend it to others.
Great for my daughter who is 5
We love this book. We started with #2 because she had already mastered the previous levels. I like how it is not repetitive. Each page has new activities.

Students love this!
Great for follow up lessons in phonics. Students love this workbook. I highly recommend this workbook for class or homeschool.
Love this program!!
Started this with my son summer after Kindergarden because he struggled with his reading and phonics. His reading has improved tremendously!! Even started my 3 1/2 year old on Get Ready for the Code. He is doing great!! He can read and write every letter we have covered so far! Can't go wrong with these books! You do not need the teachers guides, the books are self explanatory.

Highly effective
My five year old daughter is homeschooled, and from a very young age we started with this series. I highly recommend and it has taught her so much in the realm of ELA. My husband is a teacher and also has noticed a difference in her learning.

My daughter really loves these books and we are using them for a dual purpose of phonics and penmanship practice. They are simple enough that she can work on them independently.
ETC is a great resource.
It's been around for years for a reason, it works!

I love the way that all of the Explode the Code books are laid out. They're easy to use. They have enough pictures that my children enjoy them but not so many that they are busy and distracting. They are very effective in teaching phonics to young children. I've been delighted at how quickly my son had picked up the letter sounds!

I love Explode the Codes. Their great short lessons are wonderful!
Kids love it
Easy to use, ( going w/o the teachers manual right now ). Kids enjoy doing it! Will buy the next books to continue.
ETC is a great resource!
Explode the Code takes learners through word / sound recognition, then practice in spelling and writing and finally checks for understanding/comprehension. I highly recommend it!
Outstanding service
It was just as advertised and very punctual, thanks, I will totally buy from this ve3nder again when I need something
Excellent
Like new!! No writing in it. No coloring. No page ripped or turned over. The cover was in top shape.

Very helpful
Good but....could someone work on the illustrations?
As with all the explode the code books, I have one complaint. The pictures! Seriously, other homeschool moms and I laugh at how horrible they are- sometimes the child can't tell what it is, and mom can't either! It doesn't happen often enough to chuck the whole book out the window, but it can be annoying. I love that my child can work independently, and learn spelling. You don't even need the teacher book.
Great Phonics
Great support with repetitive work in developing phonics skills.
Good workbooks!
I cannot say enough good things about these books. Yes, they have some "silly nonsense" but 5yr olds love that "silly" stuff. We have been very happy with all the Explode the Code books and this one is no exception! After introducing a new phonic sound, etc my son can sit, follow the directions and practice independently. As some other people have said, I do agree that the pictures can be somewhat confusing and need some explanation. Multiple times a week (we do 2-3 of these worksheets a day) my children have to stop and ask what the pictures represent. I can see how that may be frustrating for struggling readers also. That is why I gave this 4 stars.

Recieved the book today. Haven't used it yet. The description for the book stated it was part of a set being purchased but upon arrival it was only this one book. Don't let the description fool you. This is only book 2
Perfect
Great supplemental reading book
Great Workbook
I have used Explode the Code with all my children and feel like they do a great job at building concepts. My daughter is 5 1/2 and is doing well with this book. We started off in 1 then progressed to 1 1/2. They build upon each other. She is probably more advanced than others her age, but she is my youngest and strives to be like her older siblings, so it is hard for me to gauge her among her peers. My only complaint is that sometimes the pictures are difficult to convey not only to the child but to the parent!
but I really dislike the pictures in the book
I think this is decent, but I really dislike the pictures in the book. They look more like scribbles (if you can't tell from the cover) and are hard to decipher sometimes. This makes it hard for a child to understand what's being asked if they can't figure out what the picture is showing. Even so, we're continuing to use these for our homeschool curriculum for the time being.
Good workbook for the auditory, kinesthetic child
My daughter is a auditory learner and like almost all kids at five years of age learning is enhanced by a "hands-on" approach. These books are a good combination of both. Children have to mark their selections with X's and circles and introductory spelling of short vowel words. Book 2 focuses on beginning blends as well. They must also read simple sentences aloud to answer yes/no questions and to choose the sentence that best describes a picture. My daughter and I enjoy these books. They are a good complement to our homeschool phonics program.
Amazon! ship books in padding please!
Book is excellent. But it arrived bent, curled up between 2 larger products. Please ship books flat and wrapped in bubble wrap!
A great variety of worksheets that go over initial and final ...
A great variety of worksheets that go over initial and final consonant blends. I didn't, however, expect to have to create my own spelling lists (they aren't included) but great practice just the same!
We like this series
We like this series. Doesn't require much parent input and child can work on his own. We use as a supplement to other Language Arts Program for review and reinforcement of concepts.
Exactly what we needed
My first grader can read more than he thinks, and is lacking confidence. The incremental approach of this book seems to be just what he needs. I plan to buy the rest of the series!
Five Stars
Works to mastery with consistent use.

Big fan of the entire Explode the Code series <3
Mostly good overall experience
We received this work book on time and in the condition the seller had described. I would buy form this seller again but I would inquire about the book before I purchased. I would have given 5 stars had they been a little more detailed about the condition of this work book. They said "..and perhaps considerable marking on inside". In my opinion this description was a little misleading. I wish they were a little more detailed about these markings. For example "There are many pages that have been completed in crayon and pen. " Or at least to say that "The workbook had been partially completed". I do admit it was my responsibility to inquire about these potential marks and will do so in the future.
Four Stars
as advertised

Great supplement to another curriculum, but probably not enough by itself if you are homeschooling.
Overall good book....will use with future kids
Sometimes the lesson seems a bit long....but they are great! Quick & to the point....illustrations are basic & daughter doesn't mind the lesson
Helps
Pretty good, but costly ......
Explode the Code
I got this for my six-year-old. We haven't started it yet, but I think he'll enjoy it. It looks like it's right at his level.
Used not new!
Received a used product when it said new. Haven’t heard back from the shop.
One Star
this book is stupid!!!
Very easy to use
My son is an early reader at 4.5 but was at times guessing what certain words were because he was too excited about reading the story. This book teaches not to cheat because they have similar spelled words and you have to read and understand the whole sentence and match it with the picture. It's very good for teaching comprehension. It also teaches spelling in a few different ways while learning phonics. There is lots of review for words learned. I really enjoy this book. It is black and white with minimal graphics. This helps my son because he gets distracted by neat pictures and begins to guess the story line instead of reading. It's a very crisp clean teaching book. If you child is not yet feeling comfortable with writing this is also a good book because there is some writing but not a ton. We do writing areas orally as suggested by other experienced teachers until he feels more adept at writing.
Former K teacher says this is the best!
I'm a former Kinder teacher and home school mom. I discovered these books when homeschooling my 5 year old twin boys. They LOVED Explode the Code! At Kindergarten they were tested through the school district as reading at a fifth grade level. ETC is spot on for phonics instruction, kids can work through it independently, at their own pace, and kids like it. The pictures and situations are funny! In my opinion as a former Kindergarten teacher, these workbooks along with a rich read aloud and independent reading "program" are better than anything the schools have to offer.
Bottom Line - It Works!
The progressive phonics introduction, the engaging little drawings, the repetitive tasks, the systematic skill progression, among other educational objectives, all boil down to one fact ~ THIS WORKS! I've tried several other methods to assist my special child in spelling and reading. While these workbooks are marketed more as a supplement to a reading program, nothing has been more influential in my daughter actually GETTING IT! She is always eager to pull out her Explode the Code book first. The progess is consistently steady. My friend's child who is not learning challenged feels the same enthusiam. The publisher of this series also produces the wonderful Wordly Wise 3000 workbooks which are equally successful and well-received by my students.
Uses Blends
My 5 year old has already went through book 1, and while I was a bit apprehensive, I liked the easy structure and the practice that it allowed with (mostly) cvc words. There were some doubles at the end of the words near the end of book 1, such as in the word "bell." However, my 5 year old understands that sometimes sounds are made of more than one letter, and that the same letter sometimes makes different sounds. We do a lot of practice breaking apart words into their separate sounds. So onto book 2 we went...The first 5 pages went fine, with my child being asked to do things like look at a picture and choose whether it represents "club" or "cub" for instance. There's also fill in the blank (from a word bank) exercises for writing practice, and all with the big lines for beginning writers. However, on page 6, you are shown a picture (of a glass, for instance) and asked to circle the sounds that make up the word. There are 3 columns of choices. For glass, the first set of choices are "cl" or "gl," the middle is "a" or "i," and the end is "ss" or "ff." The only problem I have is with the first choice. "Gl" is a blend, and I would have liked it better if they had separated the sounds. "G" and "l" make the same sounds sounds separately as they do when together, and "gl" is not a new sound that needs to be learned. However, I know that blends are the method a lot of schools still use to teach sound relationships, so I guess it DOES work. I will probably continue to use this method regardless of what I think about blends, but I thought that it was worth mentioning.
from a first grade teacher
I have taught with the Explode the Code series for years in private schools, especially in first and second grade. The lessons are very easy to follow - each 8 page sequence introduces a new phonics pattern; the exercises get more challenging as the child moves through the lesson. The directions are very simple and the format is consistent throughout the series. The "1/2" books provide more practice with the previous book's lessons before your child moves on to the concepts in the next book.
Fantastic for Early Readers!
These books are fantastic! My 5 year old loves doing these. The instructions are easy, so she always knows what she is doing. This book was a bit of review for her, but I think it was a good choice to reinforce her knowledge and build her confidence!

Love these books to practice phonics!
A great learning tool for phonics programs!
My six year old is almost finished with Explode the Code 2; her decoding skills have increased 100% since starting this program. She loves the simple illustrations and the easy to follow instructions, and I love the pace she is learning at-not too fast, not too slow. She actually loves doing her lesson each day, since the worksheets have a predictable format but aren't boring. The lessons are also short, which helps to keep her attention. Overall this is a wonderful foundation phonics program for beginning readers as well as for those readers learning the more complicated rules of grammar.
Thanks for the great service.
Thanks for the great service. I will come again to buy the other books in the series.

Thumbs up!
My homeschooled 6 year old daughter loved Explode the Code book 1 and is excited to move on to this 2nd book in the Explode the Code series. Explode the Code books are a great accompaniment to a phonics programme and work particularly well with reluctant writers.
Great!
Very happy with this book. I home educate my son who is in yr 1 and he is using this as part of writing and phonics. We will definitely be buying the follow up books
