Best classroom management guide I know

I've been a fan of this framework ever since I learned about it almost 10 years ago. I'm thrilled that Kristyn Klei Borrero has written this book to introduce more people to this powerful toolkit for improving classroom management. I'd recommend this book to any teacher, administrator, or other educator who needs to think about effective school culture. When I learned about the No-Nonsense Nurturer framework, I was given a way to see what made effective classroom management work in real life, and it has made me much more aware about the specific, concrete ways that teachers can create happy, thriving classrooms. The author has become a friend since we met professionally as through her work, and I have found her insights to be consistently inspiring and useful. I'm so happy that more people will get to read this excellent book --which I found most informative even with the background information I had, and which would also be completely accessible and useful to someone who was not familiar with this framework. Very highly recommended to people in education.

This is exactly what I have been looking for!

This is the book that I have been waiting for! As I reflect on my years as a parent, teacher, instructional coach, principal, director of leadership development, assistant superintendent of curriculum & instruction, and assistant superintendent of human resources, I have longed for a resource that not only would get straight to the heart of teaching and learning, but could also be used in both high achieving school systems and those struggling school districts. Kristyn has hit a home run with her book, “Every Student, Every Day: A No-Nonsense Nurturer Approach To Reaching All Learners.” This text provides a pathway for educators at all levels and roles to achieve success in facilitating and accelerating student achievement, and continued self-development. Every new teacher should be given a copy by HR, and every veteran teacher should be provided a copy by their site administrator. The No-Nonsense Nurturer helps teachers engage in: • Deliberate reflection • Building deep connections with their students • Effective communication • Changing and building new habits of mind • A simple, yet powerful, approach to classroom management • How to be a strong yet caring teacher It also allows for issues of race, class, and culture to be leveraged as a developmental process of building trust, equity, and effective communication towards high academic achievement. Principals evaluate their staff, but the successful ones also wear the hat of a coach. This book is of great value to principals in both roles. As a coach and evaluator, it supports you in assisting your staff with: • Processing their work and seeing it through an outside lens • Setting achievable incremental growth goals • Framing immediate feedback based upon your observations • Supporting new ways of “being” for your evaluatees. I love the way that it can support administrators to know what to look for outside of (and deeply within) dry standards, and give immediate feedback in a way that a staff member can work on immediately. As a site administrator, this is what I would want to see if I walk in the door of all of my classrooms. It also addresses the “Just tell me what to do” syndrome in a way that balances the instructional (ways of doing) in a way that leads to the transformational (ways of being) development of the teacher and student. I think you can tell just how excited that I am to have found this book! This text should be a part of all Teacher Prep and Administrative credential programs. I will certainly be drawing upon it in my current role as an educational consultant.

If I could turn back the clock! Where was this when i first started teaching!

Where was Every Student, Every Day when I first started teaching! For those of you veterans who have been around a while like I have, this takes the work of Lee Canter to the next level! Grounded in what we know about building well balanced (No-Nonsense Nurturing), high impact, life-altering relationships with youth, Klei Borrero thoughtfully provides the framing and practical, actionable steps that go beyond simply creating well managed classrooms, to cultivating a culture of care and high expectations. A powerful tool for coaches and mentors as well who are looking for practical steps and resources to support their teachers.

Yes! Relationship Building is not just a “buzz word”! It’s time for some No-Nonsense Nurturing!

It’s not a cliché! One of my biggest complaints with educational books is the emphasis on the “what” or the “research” and not enough “how”. Not the case with Kristyn Klei-Borrero’s work. I can pause my reading and try out the strategies for giving precise directions to set scholars up for success. The text presents like a narrative with stories and examples which makes it an easy read. Add the opportunities to process the content with strategies and it gets “down and dirty” and practical. Her emphasis on building relationships is threaded throughout the text. It’s the types of relationship-building that educators need to use as leverage for encouraging students to achieve greater academic success. Again, the focus is on the “how” to build relationships and not just that they are needed. Kudos to Dr. Klei-Borrero for pushing our understanding of just how much depth in relationship-building is required for our students to excel. I agree, it is possible for every student, every day!

EVERY TEACHER needs "Every Student Every Day"

Simply put, if you aren't a No-Nonsense Nurturer, you aren't giving your students all they deserve. If I had this resource in my hands back when I started teaching, my entire journey would have been different. I have had the honor of seeing this work implemented in schools and it is the most powerful, transformational change I have ever seen. When teachers implement this in their classrooms, the culture shifts immediately, students feel empowered, cared for and challenged, and everyone truly can be set up for success. Klei-Borrero walks the reader through the journey of understanding what holds us back as educators from being No-Nonsense Nurturers and then concisely and clearly outlines HOW to get there. The thing is, it seems simple but it's not easy to implement...this mindset stuff she talks about is no joke! It matters and the activities and reflections in the book are an awesome resource not just for teachers but for an entire staff to do as a book study. This is one of the resources EVERY educator needs to have in their tool kit.

A pragmatic and powerful methodology, delivered with heart...extendable beyond the classroom.

I was first exposed to Klei Borrero’s No Nonsense Nurturing work when I heard the segment about her work with the Charlotte public school district on NPRs “All Things Considered.” I was immediately struck by the methodology's way of striking a balance between being tough on students and holding them to a high performance bar while maintaining an authenticity that recognizes the students' potential. I’m not an educator in the classroom; I am a program manager in a cross-functional role at a leading tech company. In order to be successful in my work, I rely on other teams that don’t report to me to meet their deadlines. In a resource-constrained environment with always-competing priorities, this poses a challenge. I cannot be successful if others do not deliver their work on time. I have applied several concepts from the No Nonsense Nurturing methodology, particularly the accountability systems and ‘stay in the game’ conversations, to create the proper collaborative environment and shared sense of ownership for my projects. Since implementing these strategies, I have observed a profound shift in how these extended team members interact with me, for the better. I recommend this book to anyone looking to elevate the level of performance of their students or teams.

Refreshing and Profound: Why We Need to Be No-Nonsense Nurturers

Klei Borrero’s articulation of why we need this work reignited my fire! She craftily and profoundly makes an argument for why we need to be No-Nonsense Nurturers and how our very effectiveness in this work is at stake without doing so. She describes how educators (who have not been effectively trained on how to create “a positive, disruption-free classroom culture…that promotes student learning”) encounter students whose culture and academic success demand and deserve teachers who will do exactly that. “While this may be unintentional, harm to students is immeasurable”, Klei Borrero frankly states. Yet, she does not leave the reader hopeless and full of guilt. She impresses upon the reader to dig deeper, self-assess, unlearn assumptions, develop a passion for building meaningful relationships, and ultimately, commit to change…for students and themselves. Excellent resource!

Absolutely game changing for teachers and students, parents and children!

Far reaching in its cultural impact, yet close and personal in its approach, Every Student, Every Day gives a step by step system for educators to facilitate the success of every student in their classroom while accounting for diversity of learning styles and educational experiences. The structure laid out gives the educator the guidelines to create a classroom culture of students developing their best selves both in scholastic achievement as well as developing their best selves with their peers. While written for educators, the theory and application easily translates to parenting and helps parents to create the structure and accountability that they need to accompany the incredible love they have for their children. Every Student, Every Day is absolutely game changing for teachers and parents alike, a huge contribution toward our schools developing caring, young minds who believe in themselves and contribute to the wellbeing of their communities.

Every Adult Connected To Children MUST Read This Book!

This book stands out from the rest because it doesn't just highlight the "what", but it also gives educators the "WHY" behind the urgency in the need to challenge the status quo in the educational sphere. Being a No-Nonsense Nurturer is imperative for educators to transform the schooling experience and trajectory of educational spaces for children. This practice is not just for educators, but for parents also. I recommend this book be used in book clubs with educators to unpack the tenets of a No-Nonsense Nurturer, identify an area to grow in, and commit to following through on it. Also sharing the book with parents can bridge and strengthen partnerships on creating safe, predictable structures for children between home and school.

For leaders and teachers who want to make a POWERFUL shift

I've worked in education for years. Started as a teacher, became an Assistant Principal and then became a Principal. During my time in schools, one thing rings true: People think that great teachers have some sort of inherent skills that can't be taught. This book proves quite the opposite. The moves that effective teachers make aren't magic, they are deliberate and they are consistent. The 4 Step Model that Klei Borrero so clearly explains in her book demystifies the moves that great teachers have made habits in their classroom, making it accessible to teachers with varied levels of classroom experience. One of the things that I so greatly appreciate is that Klei Borrero doesn't simply tell you what you need to do to make a change, she tells you HOW.

That said, reading it now has me reflecting on my own role in education and on what exceptional education can and should look like. Precise Directions changed our lives!

Precise Directions changed our lives! I’m a mom to 4 young kids and accomplishing our routine tasks was often challenging with our busy, on-the-go schedule. This book lays out easy to follow guidelines for crafting directions that work. With a little planning, I now let my kids know what is expected of them in a clear and organized set of directions, and they are off an running! I don’t feel like a broken record and the kids are eager to complete their mission. Less push back, shared expectations, and engagement (supported by narration – another life saver) create a positive environment that really gives us a chance to enjoy our accomplishments and each other. I urge parents, classroom volunteers, coaches, anyone working with groups of kids, to read this book.

No matter your position, this is must read for every educator!

"Every Student Every Day" is a must-read for all administrators, instructional coaches, beginning teachers, veteran teachers, and all teachers in between. Kristyn Klei Borrero provides a theoretical foundation along with practical and effective research-based strategies for transforming the culture and climate of a classroom and school. I have observed firsthand the positive impact that Kristyn's work has made on the lives of staff and students. "Every Student Every Day" is also a great book to discuss in professional learning communities with new teachers to help them build awareness as well as provide them with tools in their toolbox for creating and nurturing a positive classroom environment.

A must read for every educator!

This is one of the best books for educators at any level. It provides an understanding of what it means to be a no-nonsense nurturer and supports you in learning to embrace the philosophy through a detailed guide of the 4-step model. The book also helps you to understand how relationships are the building blocks for helping teachers support students as they met and exceed academic goals.

A collaborative read for parents and teachers

As a parent reading this book I found the sections on precise direction and positive narration invaluable. The sections on building relationships and accountability systems have helped me to improve my communication with my sons’ teachers. I love the idea of using this book as a book club for our PTA, including teachers and parents.

The most important book on education you will ever read!
