Fun and easy to read...

Lots of helpful tips and training suggestions. Author sparks this with entertainment. Well worth the money

Loved this book

I love how this book is written in a way that is applicable to both novice and experienced riders. I also thoroughly enjoyed the "bad idea fairy", lol.

Excellent for the new endurance rider!

What I love about this book is the humor and great information for new endurance riders. This book gives you a great insight into what you can expect at your first ride and gives excellent advice on how to ride your own ride. From tack choices to what to wear, this book covers every aspect of the endurance world. I recommend this book to anyone with interest in the sport!

Great for endurance or even camping

Downloaded the Kindle version of this because I was interested in endurance riding but also because I was really Interested in longer trail rides and overnight camping trips with my horse. Much of the information is helpful for camping as well! Really great read and really great attitude that the author has towards her sport. With so much abuse of horses in so many disciplines nice to get a glimpse into a sport that's really gotten it right with regards to its equine participants and puts the horse's welfare above all else, including winning.

Great book for those wanting to start endurance riding!

Lots of great info. Some is common sense but reassuring. It describes rides and how they run/what is expected so there are no surprises at your first ride. I read Aarene's blog before my first 25 mile ride and it helped me a lot! I will be buying the hardcover for gifts.

Witty and good basic information

Easy to read and full of good pointers. Not enough to feel confident to get started but enough to get you thinking. Points you to good places to learn more. Really enjoyed reading this and it made me think about stuff that had not crossed my mind.

The author covers all the nuts and bolts of what a new rider needs to know to get started with AERC rides, plus a bit more. The humor and personal stories are very entertaining making it a very quick and enjoyable read. There are tons of resources listed at the end. This book is both practical and entertaining. The photos do not show up well on my small Kindle so I wish I could have purchased it as a soft cover book.

Endurance 101: a gentle guide to the sport of long distance riding

So blessed to have found this book before jumping into the sport. Such an informative, educational and entertaining book. A must read for all new comers to the sport of endurance riding!

Nice overview

I don't have a horse yet but endurance riding is something I really want to get into when I finally get one. Good overview on what to expect when I do start. Happy to have read it.

Endurance 101

I chose this rating because I loved the book. It is straightforward and for any beginning endurance rider it is a wealth of information. I love the "Bad Idea Fairy" because if you ride long enough, all of us have experienced a bad idea or two. For riders with experience, it is still a great book because as we ride we have to keep on learning to be able to keep ourselves and our horses sound. I think all beginning riders should start with this book!

Endurance 101

This book was fantastic! I really appreciate the authors candor and humor. It's like having your best friend tell you everything you need to know about endurance riding. Aarene gets down to the nitty gritty and saves her readers the pain of learning the hard way. I have read several other books and followed several endurance riding blogs and this book was by far the best information for beginners.

Informational book

I am just thinking about getting into endurance riding. This was full of information on what to do and what to expect. Good ideas on how to start out. Would definitely recommend this book.

Helpful

This book was well written with a good balance of readability and information. Was incredibly helpful training suggestions for every level of starting.

Funny and informative read!

Aarene does an excellent job of breaking it down to your level

I bought this book as an overwhelmed beginner to endurance riding. I was ready to forget attempting to absorb all the information. Out there available. Aarene does an excellent job of breaking it down to your level. An excellent first book to read and an enjoyable one with her added humor. Loved it.

Great introduction to cool equestrian activity

Well written

Good read

I enjoyed the writing style and the pictures. It is a good basic endurance book the author has a good handle on explaining things . My only complaint is that I wish it were longer.

It is the perfect book to give an overview

If you are interested at all in getting into Endurance, do your self a favor and start with this book. It is the perfect book to give an overview, but not overload you with information. I highly recommend it!

Endurance 101

OK, it is a good book for beginner endurance riders. With nice humor too. That's about it. Enough ...good grief. This is taking too long...

Five Stars

Excellent

Too basic

If you've never ridden any discipline it'll be helpful, but it's very basic for someone who has ridden in the past.

Five Stars

I loved this book, very instructional and detailed about many of the areas of endurance riding!

This is an excellent practical book on endurance riding. It is 177 pages long and is divided into 16 chapters, as follows: Introduction: What is endurance riding? Chapter 1: Find the Right Horse Chapter 2: Find the Right Tack (for horse and rider) Chapter 3: Beginning the Training at Home Chapter 4: Getting Help Along the Way Chapter 5: Hitting the Trail Chapter 6: How Long? How Far? How Fast? Chapter 7: Evaluating Equine Fitness Chapter 8: Visit a Ridecamp Without Your Horse Chapter 9: Almost Ready for Your First Ride Chapter 10: The First Ride, Part One Chapter 11: The First Ride, Part Two Chapter 12: The First Ride, Part Three Chapter 13: When Things Go Wrong Chapter 14: Junior Riders Chapter 15: Don'ts and Do's For Your First Year Chapter 16: Many Kinds of Winning Glossry Footnoted Resources Appendix A: Useful Resources Index About the Author, Aarene Storms. The paperback version is 8x11-inches in size, printed on heavy enamel paper, with a large number of colored photographs. The author, Aarene Storms, is a veteran endurance rider and a long-time member of the American Endurance Ride Conference. The paperback version is about $29, and the Kindle e-book from Amazon is a bargain at $9.99. This book is strongly recommended for all endurance riders. My treasured copy has been autographed by the author, Aarene Storms.

Holy crap, it's useful.

#1: I have the attention span of a gnat, and I pretty much only read fiction books. I wish that weren't true, because at the rate I go through books I would be the smartest person alive if I liked non-fiction, but it is what it is. Dude. The book is good - like, really good. I don't know if it was the plethora of pretty horse pictures, or if it is the readability of writing, or what - but it held my attention like a fiction book, all while I actually learned something. I may have laughed out loud once or twice. I've been in the horse world for years, and I figured I'd learn some techniques to help me in endurance, but I didn't actually realize I would learn so much with this book. The best part about it, aside from the fact that it's seriously helpful, is that the information is detailed and solid, presented in easily understood terms from someone who has been-there and done-that, and it never once seems to talk down to you like other horse books I've read. That, in and of itself, made it really refreshing to read. I recommend this book for everyone, from people who are just getting into horses and have no desire to do endurance (the down-to-earth info is that useful), to riders who have been around horses for years. Even veteran endurance riders will find a handful of useful tips.

Excellent Guide to Beginning Endurance

Endurance 101 is probably the most encyclopedic guide to the sport of endurance I have read. Where most books, like "4th Gear" or "Beginning to Winning" are really focused on experienced riders, this book begins with the assumption that you know horses, and know next to nothing about camping with your horse, or participating in long distance riding events. Ms. Storms takes you through the building blocks, giving practical advice with grace and humor at every turn. It is well worth the time and money spent on this book to jump start a long distance riding career.

Thorough and thoroughly enjoyable.

Of course I loved the humor in this book, but even more, it is full of solid, useful information on preparing for endurance riding. I especially appreciate the insistence on caring for the horse, bringing them along in a slow and steady manner. There is so much abuse of horses in the name of competition, it is refreshing to see such a responsible approach. The beautiful photos illustrate the concepts. Thank you for this inspirational book.

Humorous AND Helpful!

It doesn't get much better than this book. The Bad Idea Fairy will keep you on the right track as you learn the ins and outs of getting started in endurance, and Aarene's sense of humor will keep you entertained throughout.

Practical,yet FUN!

Though it's been many years since I did any long distance riding, I recognize the valuable info packed into this book. And much of it can be useful to the non-rider, as well, such as the family-member-turned support crew, or the ride camp volunteer. But what makes this book fun is the author's relaxed way of conveying a LOT of clear info and advice. Plus regular visits from the Bad Idea Fairy (and her super speschul Purploosa) provide hilarious counterpoint to show what NOT to do! Worth it's weight in electrolytes!

Save yourself years of making rookie mistakes with this book!

What a wonderful combination - an experienced endurance rider with world class communication skills. You could spend a few years asking questions and making mistakes as you try to prepare yourself and your horse for the endurance world or - you can just download this book and read it. And refer back to it. And tell your friends. Not all endurance events are for highly skilled riders and world class horses. Many are a nice ride in the woods, with organization and protection built in to make sure horse and rider have fun and get home safely. Trot on over and get this book regardless of your aspirations.

Greatbook and funny

Got the kindle version of this ,, Absolutely perfect for the folks thinking about endurance.. Light hearted but transfers the important info with a sense of humor.

Great book

I ordered this as an Ebook when it was first released. If it was a paperback, it would be dog eared from the numerous rereads. It is a great guide for anyone looking to get into endurance riding and I highly recommend it.

Excellent reference book without being boring!

As a dressage/event rider who would also love to get into distance riding at the low levels, this book was a perfect combination of solid advice and easy-to-understand diction. I felt as though Aarene was chatting with me as a fellow equestrian, and it made distance riding feel like something I could accomplish. The humor and literary/movie references kept me entertained and added to the conversational tone.

Start here for fun endurance

Hands down the best non fiction horse book ever! Super handy to keep around for a fun reference or getting other people into endurance!

Great book. A perfect gift for yourself or someone you know who is learning or interested in learning the basics of Endurance riding. Aarene takes a lot of the guess work out of vetting, camping, and trail ettiquett. Highly recommend

Entertaining and practical

Loved this book from the first page. Not only does it have good information, it has humor to make the reading very enjoyable. I would recommend this book to anybody who loves horses.
