Updated with the latest information on canine breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, this lavishly illustrated volume is a treasure house of information for dog lovers, owners, breeders, and prospective buyers. It begins with a detailed discussion of breed evolution, focusing on the physical and behavioral traits that distinguish one canine breed from another. The books main section profiles more than 150 breeds, arranged in the general categories specified by the AKCSporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group, and Herding Group. Each profile tells how and why the breed was developed, and how selection to perpetuate specific traits affects a dogs suitability as a pet. Advice for prospective dog owners will help them be sure they are choosing a breed that is compatible with their own situation and needs. They will also find information on each breeds vulnerability to specific health problems, longevity, exercise needs, compatibility with children, and much more. Profuse illustrations include color photos of all listed breeds.

A great book for the children

As librarian in a Pre-K through 8th grade school library, I am occasionally asked by students to buy certain kinds of books. The number one request this year was a dog breed book, not a book about dogs, but specifically dog breeds. I looked at all the books available on Amazon and discovered that "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" best met our needs. From the time the book was processed and checked out to the boy who requested it, the waiting list remained steady. Once checked out, the book was relinquished only because of threats by the Library Dragon. All of the preceding paragraph is background to say how valuable this book is and how much students love it. If you or your family are ready to obtain a dog, this book certainly will provide you with information in making good choices. The first chapter begins with the Dog Family and moves to the Family Dog, asks how good the breed is with children , and how to use the Breed Profiles. Then most of the book is taken by the specifics of the various breeds of dogs. Divided into classes, dogs belong to the sporting group, hounds, working dogs, terriers, toys, non-sporting group, and herders. When a book contains over 150 breeds of dogs, the viewer will see almost infinite varieties of some breeds. For example, American Staffordshire Terrier and the Bull Terrier resemble each other. Do you know the Glen of Imaal Terrier? Or the Kerry Blue Terrier or Irish Terrier, Lakeland Terrier? The Manchester Terrier looks like a small Doberman Pinscher. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is one of those with long hair covering his eyes. He's from Ireland. The Working Group are "those dogs that put their bravery or brawn into the service of humans." They can be guard dogs, protectors, sled dogs, cart dogs, and rescue dogs. They are known for their intelligence and hardiness (105). Each breed gets a two-page spread. Here's the Komondor, the large dog that has cord-like tassels for fur. The breed originated in Hungary, where it is still plentiful. It was used as a sheep herder and is being bred for that use in the United States now. However, because of its cords, it must live in a cool climate. Its positive qualities are affection, friendliness, good watchdog, and a great protector. Its negative qualities are its unfriendliness toward other dogs and strangers, and low heat tolerance. Each two-page spread contains sub-articles on history of the breed, temperament, upkeep, health, form and function, At a Glance chart, an illustration showing the standards of the breed, plus a posed, competition-like photograph and a close-up showing the nature of the dog. The last section of the book contains a glossary of medical conditions, illustrations of dog anatomy, and an index. This is a book to sit down with and spend an hour at a time, just browsing the interesting articles, looking at photographs, and picking up useful information for now or later concerning dog breeds. "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" is simply a great book to have!

Great

I had an older edition of this book and because I looked at it so often, it began to wear. I ordered this one and was pleased to find everything in the same format. The dogs are categorized by breed and group, but once you find the breed you're looking for, its great to have full color pictures. Each page offers a background of the breed, as well as comparisons on behavior, size, grooming, etc. I think this book is wonderful, I use it often to determine health expectations for dogs and what to look out for. I highly recommend anyone in the market for a new friend to use this book as a tool in deciding the best pooch for you and how it will fit into your lifestyle, as well as to gain advice for long-term care. The ONLY drawback to the book is that it only contains AKC registered breeds, and there are several other familiar breeds not recognized by the AKC. It also does not offer "designer" breeds, i.e. Labordoodle, however, by looking at each breed in the mix individually you can gain a pretty good idea of how one of these mixes would be.

Good breed information, but lacking in presentation

I have an older version of The Encyclopedia of the Dog by Bruce Fogle, and here's how they compare: Dr. Fogle's book has many more breeds, but one complaint I heard was that the information it provided on the breeds was not always accurate (I can't verify this, I'm not a vet). This book here by Dr. Coile is supposedly very accurate, but has fewer breeds (only the AKC it seems); however, I knew that before I bought it so I can't complain. Very few people own or can obtain non-AKC breeds, so reading about them would just be for pleasure for most people. That said, Dr. Coile provides more information for each breed, giving 5-scale ratings for 13 different characteristics (tempermant, grooming, heat/cold tolerance, exercise needs, etc), health concerns, breed history, etc. However, the pictures they provide aren't nearly as professional looking as the ones in Dr. Fogle's book, if that matters to you. Also, the binding is cheaper in this book. One important difference, though, is that this book contains no other information aside of about the breeds. Dr. Fogle's book, in contrast, provides the history and use of types of breeds (such as hounds, herding dogs, hunting dogs, etc, not just a particular breed), anatomy, evolution, care, training, etc. Dr. Coile provides none of that. So, if you just want a book to help you pick out an AKC breed and need accurate, more detailed breed information then this book is the better choice; but for general interest and pleasure, Dr. Fogle's book is better.

5 year old loves this!

Promised my daughter a dog... But said we'd have to research it thoroughly first, to make sure everyone in the family is on board, including a mom who remembers sweeping/vacuuming after my previous shepherd/husky mix, and a bird we've acquired since then. She's been slowly reading through it... She doesn't like reading the bigger blocks of text, but enjoys the summary/breakdown charts, and is happy to share which breeds shed less to mom, or need less attention/exercise, etc. There are a lot of pictures, but it's also VERY even-handed... She also likes trying to recognize the breeds she's read about on the street, and runs home to try and figure out the unfamiliar ones some days. No breed gets more attention/pagecount than the rest, so once she's narrowed in on a specific dog she wants, we'll probably get a second book specific to that breed/group to confirm/assist in training/etc.

Excellent guide when choosing a breed

When my daughter wanted to get a puppy I bought her this book and asked her to read it and find a breed that would work for us. A decade later I still enjoy perusing the book for its concise, accurate, descriptions of the breeds.

Perfect! Very Detailed!

I owned this book as a child and I loved reading it for hours. At some point, we must have lost and I wasn't reminded until recently now that I've graduated from college and living with my boyfriend. We contemplated pets and this book came to mind. It's PERFECT. It's very detailed and cohesive. It's not overly wordy. It tells you exactly what you need to when considering what breed of dog to get - temperament, major and minor health issues for each breed, their origin, how much exercise they need, how well behaved they are with children, other animals, and strangers! All on a quantified scale. It's really one of the most detailed and comprehensive book on dog breeds. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.

beginners guide to breeds

i'm a long time cat owner who's recently become interested in dogs. i know nothing beyond the behavior of my friends' pets, and didn't know what to attribute to training vs. characteristics of the breed. This book is very helpful for newbies who want to learn various characteristics to look for in a breed, and what to expect in general. the needs of the animal are presented as paramount, which i appreciate. For example, each breed is identified by how much exercise they need, how much they bark, and how affectionate they are. As an apartment dweller, it helped me eliminate many breeds using useful criteria, rather than availability and cuteness, which seems to be a common default among first time owners i've met.

For dog lovers

I bought this for a friend who is a dog sitter and she loves it! Nothing she likes better than dogs, she liked all the pictures. I got to read some too and I like how they rate each breed for friendliness, gets along with people and other dogs, trainability, watchdog ability, energy level. It also gives suggestions as to what home situation would best suit each breed. A fun book. My only disappointment was the condition of the book itself. The ad said "Very Good" condition, it was a lot messier than that, not so good for a gift.

Best loved book in our houses

My 3 girls have been reading this book weekly for the past 5 years. It surprises me how much they still love it. They’ve memorized so many facts about the breeds., and they use it in planning their someday farm. It’s one of the most loved books in our house. If you have a little animal lover, this is a great gift.

Fabulous Used Book!

I bought a used copy that was a wonderful price and condition! It had minor damage to the spine, which I was already told about. Love that I was able to save money and get a newer looking copy than mine that my puppies chewed up years ago! Will buy from seller again.

A Great Tool For People Not Comfortable With Dog Breed Identification

We had a 60 dog breed identification test at school and tests over genetic diseases or hereditary traits such as the MDR1 in collies. This book adequately prepared me for that test and I feel this book provides a wealth of knowledge to anyone who does not have a firm grasp of dog breeds.

Best Dog Book

One of the best dog breed books around with perhaps the best illustrations. This book not only contains the AKC breed information but does it more comprehensively. Instead of limiting itself to size descriptions of breeds by either height or by weight, so often done in AKC breed standards, this book gives an average height and weight range for each of the breeds. Great overall characteristic descriptions such as temperament, upkeep, genetic health problems, and form and function. Many highly illustrated dog books have great pictures of some breeds and unflattering ones of other breeds. The Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds has consistently beautiful pictures throughout. If you are more interested in adopting one of the lonely little All Americans out there in shelters, this is a fun way to gather information about the heritage and personality that make up that little guy's background.

Good refresher

I'm newer to the dog training business and wanted something just to look at for casual reading, and reference. I can't say I have a master knowledge of all breeds yet and just wanted something to look at to learn and/or refresh my memory from time to time. It has a quick informative section on breed history, highlights AKC ranking, body type, common diseases, all the pretty common things in breed books. The layout is very nice and easy and enjoyable. The pictures, which I've noticed some breed books skimp on, are high quality imo. The book has some nice extras like a layout of dog anatomy, etc. The only problem was I just wanted more of it.

Great book for dog lovers of any age.

This was a gift for our 8 year old grandson. He is able to read and understand the meaning and facts in the book. He is a very knowledgeable dog lover.

For the dog enthusiast.

This book has SO much information! It tells you where the dogs originated, what the breeds purpose was, temperments, security ability, playfulness.. It's great! I especially like that it doesn't completely focus on the grooming requirements. Most breed books take an entire page to tell you what the coat should look like. While it's not that I don't care, I am just more interested in learning about the breed specifics, personality, etc. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who is a true dog enthusiast.

Perfect for the novice

This is the perfect book for people who are trying to decide on the type of dog they wish to get; and also for people, like me, who just want to learn a bit about the various breeds. There are two full pages for each dog, two good color photos, and the basic information an aspiring owner of a purebred pet would want, such as size, temperament, grooming, and common health problems. Dr. Coile has certainly done her research. It's informative yet fun to just page through. I highly recommend it.

Sufficient Help for Amateurs looking for a pet

Briefly, purchased this product as we are looking at buying our first family dog. The pictures are good, often giving at least 2, if not 3, views of the dogs (not puppy pictures). The information is well organized and helpful, easy enough for an 8 year old to read. There are nice summary graphs for each type of dog, offering quick references for things like "ease of training" and "grooming requirements". Overall, it accomplished its task of providing us with some good basic information. While I did not cross reference every breed, we researched those most interesting to us using other sources, and this book's information was compatible.

Helped us out

We purchased this book when contemplating a dog for our family. Well written, great pictures, our kids loved looking at the pictures too. We ended up deciding to wait to get a dog until our kids get a bit older, but we noted which dog breeds/types would suit our family. We ended up giving the book away to another family as a reference. Would recommend if you want a good solid book of dog breeds to look at and read about.

The Ideal Resource Book

This is a fantastic resource book on different breeds of dog. The descriptions are thorough, easy to read and are accompanied by color photos. Dogs are rated on energy level, exercise requirements, playfulness, affection level, friendliness towards dogs/other pets/strangers, ease of training, watchdog ability, protection ability, grooming requirements and tolerance toward cold and heat. I was able to really determine the best dog for my family using measures I hadn't even thought of! This book is the one for you if you are trying to decide the best purebred dog for your family and lifestyle. Check out "Hot Dogs" for excellent info on some of the newer mixed breeds.

Beautiful photographs; great information

I purchased this book for my daughter who lives in an apartment and would love to have a dog, but isn't sure if the environment and schedule is suitable and for which breeds would it work the best. The photographs and information are so well presented, I spent over an hour looking at the book before I gave it to her. She has it on her coffee table and everyone who comes over picks it up and is instantly engaged by it. People love dogs! What more can I say?

If you Love Dogs, You'll Love this book

I bought the book as I sew dog garments as part of my sewing business. For this need the book provided insights as to size of different breeds. Now when a customer asks me if a certain size will fit their dog and they give the breed I have a ready reference to turn to. But this book is a beautiful book, great pictures, good text...a joy to read. And one I consider a valuable addition to my library. If you love dogs, you'll love this book.

Nice book for kids.

This is a nice book for kids but it doesn't cover all of the recognized breeds in this 2005 edition. The information about the different breeds is good but limited to breeds recognized by AKC. Pretty pictures.

Perfect Coffee Table Dog Book

This book is so valuable to me, it is my coffee table book. I walk dogs at a shelter and often come home to the book to identify breeds. The descriptions, the pictures and advise are the best I've seen in any dog book. Sometimes it's just fun to go through when dog lovers visit. I only wish there was a volume 2 for more breeds. Occasionally, there isn't a breed Im looking for. I then resort to Google, but the pictures can't compare.

Fun book

This is a great book! I got it for my granddaughter who is 5 and although she can't read much of it yet, she likes to look at the pictures and have the information read to her. It's fun to read it together and laugh over some of the funny looking breeds. When we were talking a few days ago she told me how long dalmations live - she has memorized quite a bit of the info!

Just enough detail

The book was used and accurately described. It seems like a thorough, yet brief encyclopedia of dog breeds that will be just right for my 10 year old. There is one breed per page.

Love it!

Got it for my 8 year old puppy loving daughter. She loves it! Pictures are awesome. Lots of information in it. Great gift for the dog lover! Not all breeds are covered, of course, but you can't really expect it in such a "small" book. If you want detailed info on individual breeds you better buy a book on the particular breed. This book most likely won't cover all. I LOVE it!

Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds

I chose this rating because this book was exactly what my daughter asked for...It will be a surprise. This book is so informative...It is a big book, packed with tons of information. After browsing through several pages, I was rather impressed. This book is descriptve and details many canine breeds complete with gorgeous pictorials.See for yourself and see that it is worth every penny! Enjoy, AF.

LOVE it!!!! A GREAT buy1

I would recommend this to everyone!!!!!! Im 13years old and it is very easy to read and understand, and has everything from the breeds history, its description, exercise requirements along with great pictures. The book itself is rather large and that may be a problem for some. Overall a GREAT book, very clear BUY BUY BUY!!!!!!!!!!!

Just like I remember

I had this book as a child and loved learning all the breeds and their characteristics.

Awesome!

Bought this for my dog addicted 7 year old granddaughter. She barely put it down for the 3 days I was with her. Lots of good info (she was able to locate the life span section on each page which fascinated her) and great pics. By now she has probably labeled each photo with a doggy name. Delivered promptly, book better than expected.

Very informative

This book is very informative and reader friendly. It also has many nice illustrated photos. Any pet owner, pet lover or soon to be pet owner should keep a copy of this book in their shelf. The book has a hard cover so it'll last a long time. And kids like to look at all the cute pics of the doggies.

Good book about dogs

Good book about dogs. In a concise description it covers various dog breeds. Even mentioning the problems associated with the individual breeds. Good pictures add to this dog encyclopedia.

Awesome

We got this for our 8 year old daughter. While it has been a dream for her, it is also something that I think would be enjoyable to dog enthusiasts and animal lovers of any age. I think it a must buy for anyone who is thinking about which breed might be the best for their home.

love dogs

Nice review of the various breeds. The profiles are great with great "at a glance" information. I don't have a dog but love everyone else's. Perhaps someday I'll have one of my own; when I can give one my full attention.

On time delivery, but...

This book was delivered on time as stated. I knew I was buying a used book but they advertised the binding would be in good shape. It wasn't , it is very loose and pages 119, 120, 121 & 122 are missing. The book was clean with no writing on the pages.

=)

I need this Book, for the Grooming Salon.. They have the same Book, and so I looked around on AMAZON if I can get it for my own..and I found it =) I'm German and it's a good practice for me, to study all the Breeds in English =)

Great Reference

This book is a really good reference for people that want to learn about different dog breeds. It is a basic, easy-to-understand book, that provides a quite impressive summary on each breed - referencing to temperment, maintenance and even affection level of each breed based on a 1-5 scale. I would definitely recommend this book - especially for first-time dog owners.

Nice reference book

This is the third copy of this book I have bought. The first two were gifts. They were enjoyed so much I had to get one for myself. It's wonderful for identifying a breed & a good resource for general traits & what to expect in a certain breed.

We love dogs and I have always been a dog person

We love dogs and I have always been a dog person. I got this to give to my daughter because she loves dogs and wanted to read more about them and it has been a great refrence book.

Fantastic Book

An absolutely fantastic book to have when you are thinking about getting a dog and want to narrow down your search. Also awesome just to have around and peruse when you are bored and if you like dogs. :)

She loves it,

I I bought this for a friend who is a breeder, trainer and groomer. She loves it. She has an old AKC book but this is an update. She likes it because it may have dogs that have not been accepted in the AKC yet.

Excellent Book!

The book is easy to read and has great pictures. It gives a great overview and quickly learn and understand about the breeds. I like the chart it gives about grooming, exciteablity, exercise needs, etc. Very useful and very pleased!

beautiful pictures

So yes, I am a dog lover and there are sooo many breeds here that I have never even heard of before so this is quite fun! There are two full pages for every dog, more than 150 breeds and so many beautiful pictures. Well worth the price.

I liked it so much that I'm buying it for a ...

My husband bought me this book for Christmas one year. I liked it so much that I'm buying it for a friend's 11 year old daughter so that she can learn the different dog breeds.

Great coffee table book

Great book for looking through dog breeds. Has great pictures and a nice rating system for every dog. Very comprehensive and fun to either flip through quickly or use for more in depth references.

Studies of dog breeds

Its a gift for my goddaughter whos studying vet tech and grooming. She likes it.

gift for granddaughter

I was told that my granddaughter was very happy with her new book! (She said "I LOVE it!!!") My granddaughter had visited me recently from Florida and fell in love with a similar book I own. I told her I would try to find one for her 'something like it', as my book is old. I was very happy to find your "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds". Your book was much bigger, and I am sure, contains many more Dog Breeds.

Great book with definitions and descriptions of all breeds of ...

Great book with definitions and descriptions of all breeds of dogs, pretty much to fit the description of what it says on Amazon - nice pictures of all the dogs, etc.

Great Value!

I paid $20 for this book and it has been well worth it. The pictures are great and serves as a great reference. It's sure to grab your guests' attention also as the pictures and information are well placed.

Everything is good!

Book came today, I am quite happy with how it looks! Great information and full page color pictures! A great gift for anybody who is a dog lover! A lot of information in the book as well!

Dog Info

Wonderful book! Tells you about each breed of dog. You can check out what specifics you are interested in (i.e., how often needs grooming, exercise, etc...) If you are thinking of buying a dog, this is a must read, you won't regret buying this book.

Very nice reference book

The "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" is a good book for use in my career as a dog obedience trainer/consultant. I also use it to assess some one the dogs in my other job with the Humane Society.

Bringing the "know-how" to picking the dog for you!

I really thought this book was a wonderful tool. I'm a beginner when it comes to dog breeds and this book was perfect. I could walk through the pages and read the specific information I wanted and mark the page if I liked the breed, then come back to read the full review on each of the breeds I had marked. The book is separated by sizes in a sense, hunting breeds, toy breeds, miniatures and so on. I loved it. The book really gave me a feel for what my family needed. We successfully chose a dog too.

Great reference book!

My son is 9 and he loves this book! He has learned a lot about the different breeds of dogs. He brings it with him everywhere. People are impressed at how much he knows about the different breeds of dogs.

One of the best dog breed books there is...

I purchased this book for a class I took on all the different dog breeds in vet school. Although this book did not have every single breed we covered, it had the most information, pictures, and diagrams for the breed standards in each dog.

Priced great.

Great photo's and illustrations. Didn't have as many breeds as some others, but a nice book for the money.

Very nice.

While it doesn't cover every dog breed (not many do) it has great useable information on a wide variety of well-established dog breeds.

Qnwoof

I was looking for a book that would help me explain dog breeds to y friends. I compete with my dogs and many of my friends ask me about other breeds. It's nice to have a book with full color photos and good descriptions about most AKC accepted breeds.

Love it!

My 9 year old daughter loves this book. The pictures are great and the info box about every dog breed that comes along with text gives them a quick overview. Very good book for that age.

Excellent!

Couldn't ask for a more better condition book, great price too. It arrived very quickly. I'm happy with my purchase and glad that the book looked like new!

Five Stars

Great book to help you discover which breed is best for you.

Great Book

This is a great book for Dog lovers. It has information comparing breeds. You can determind if a breed will get along with your cat, love children, and is suited for the climate you live in. Their is a wealth of information at a glance. If the book has any problem is that it is limited to the accepted breeds of the AKC. Their are some 400 breeds of dogs ,the AKC only reconise 160.

Dog Lovers book

My Daughter absolutely loved this encyclopedia. She reads it every day. It has great pictures and is perfect for any dog lover.

For a Gift

Very beautiful book for a gift. Lots of information and the pictures are very good. My niece loved it as she hopes to be a vet someday

Amazing

This book is a great way to find a dog you want and what is good and bad about certain breeds. We used this guide to pick our dog a black lab and we are very happy on our choice. So far the book is correct about everything they said was good and bad about our breed.

Great book

Very nice book, very informative, or in other words - exactly what I was looking for. Very recommended. One thing though is that D. Caroline Coile likes to use a lot of words that might be a bit hard for a non-english speaker (or a not-so-good-english speaker :)

Bought for my elderly mother

Entirely adequate for the purpose. Mom has been a dog lover all her life, and she was upset that she didn't have an updated "dog book." Since she passed last January, I have given the book to my grandchildren.

A real Encyclopedia

This is the best dog encyclopedia I have ever seen. Filled with detailed description of about 150 dog breeds and with many pictures. Simply amazing.

Excelent!

Excelent book with useful information about most of breeds. Good quiality and excelent pictures. I recomend this product without a doubt.

Five Stars

I love this encyclopedia. It is very comprehensive! And it came in great shape.

Very pleased

I was very pleased with the quick responce and the excellent condition of the books. I would recommend this seller to anyone.

For dogs lovers

The the book told me lots of new things. I did not know about dogs and that now i know and i love the book.

OK, but not thorough.

The book is well done and well-photographed. Howewver, I manage volunteers that help hospice patients who have dogs (in home). I need to know the different breeds. The first two I looked up, Schnauzer and Yorkie, were not in the book! Disappointing since these are common breeds.

Great Introduction to Dog Breeds for Children

My 4th grade daughter loves this book. She can spend long periods of time leafing through and looking at the dogs and their information. The author has broken the dog breeds into 6 groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-sporting and Herding groups. The presentation of each breed is standardized on a 2 page spread. There are 2 photographs, and an illustration highlighting the breed's characteristics. The text is divided into sections on History, Temperament, Upkeep, Health and Form and Function. In addition, to be able to compare the different dogs, there is a handy table of 13 characteristics, rated on a 1 to 5 scale for such things as Energy Level, Affection Level, and Grooming Requirements. This book has more than 150 breeds and is a great way to get an overview of the different types of dogs. It can then be used as an entrée to get more information about the dogs you want to learn in depth about.

Very pleasing and very well done!

I am so glad I have this book. I will admit to being an obessive personality, and one of my obessions is the subject of dogs. I really love them, and I love to learn about them. This book is great for anyone looking to purchase or just learn about easily obtainable purebred breeds in the USA. It has good pictures, a nice amount of information on temperment, phyisical characteristics, grooming and medical needs, and history of each of the 150+ dogs included. (And, just in case you've read the review that claims this book doesn't have Pit Bulls, you don't need to worry, it does. They are offically called Staffordshire Terriers and that is what they are called in this book.) I gave this book a four because I really enjoy it and find that the info is a great starting place. It kind of sets you off in the right direction for what dogs you may want to research more throughly. I didn't give it five because I felt it should have had pictures of puppies of the differing breeds and more pictures of the varieties. (For example, both pictures of the Collie are of the rough variety, though their are actually two: the Rough and the Smooth.) Other than that, it's a great book, wonderful for basic dog knowledge and captivating (though please remember this book isn't about rare breeds).

One of the best dog breed books

I had been looking for a book of dog breeds but none quite measured up to what I was wanting. there are many that include lots of information about dogs in general, like health care, training etc. but this made the section on breeds smaller. I like this book because it devotes two pages to each breed mentioned. It provides a pretty good history, good pitures, and a handy "at a glance" chart. While I still wish the temperment section would include more info (some breeds only have 2 sentences) it provides more info than any other book I have found. Overall, this is perfect if you just want information on the breeds in an easy style.

Bad selection of dogs and inaccurate

This book has 150 breeds listed in it, but is missing a few common breeds. Most glaringly Siberian Husky is missing! As well as other American breeds: Peruvian Inca Orchid, Xoloitzcuitle and Fila Braseilero. These are uncommon breeds but have interesting backgrounds that I think people would like to read about them. There are other extremely rare dogs included. So, I don't like which ones they chose and which ones weren't. Also, what is written, regarding the history of some of these breeds in this book is questionable. For example, the books continues to perpetuate the misinformation that the Pharoah Hound is an ancient egyptian breed. This book is more for people that go to dog shows than for people that want to identify breeds at there local dog park.

Very good book!!

I like the way this book is put together but it only has 150 dog breeds. It lists everything you need to know about the breeds in a concise format. The only other thing that I can think of that it could use is a few pages that has all the dog breeds and even smaller details such as weight, height, area of origin, date originated, and other things like that. So that way you wouldn't have to read through the whole book if for example you wanted a small dog. It could save alot of time. Other than that this is the best book I have ever seen. Nothing has been missed with the breeds in this book.

Awesome

one of the best dog books out there, and believe me i've read quite a few. i think what i liked best was that each dog breed was given a review on a number of different qualities. 5 stars being the highest. they were judged on energy, "hair care", friendliness towards people and other animals, among many other things. being a dog lover and avid dog guide book reader, i thought i knew just about all there was to the different dog breeds, but this book proved me wrong. i learned more about dogs in this book than i've read in 25 other dog breed books.

a question of clarity, accuracy, and visual completeness

We bought this book to help us decide which breed would be best suited to us, and it was very helpful in that regard. It provides a two-page spread on each dog, discussing history, temperament, exercise requirements, health concerns, two photos, and a diagram pointing out aspects of breed physique (conformation). Finally, there is a chart that awards points from 1 to 5 according to how much a dog demonstrates, or lacks, a particular quality. The structure of the book is thus very sound. However, I do have criticisms of the book. First, the ratings chart, awarding points for sociability, cold tolerance, trainability, and so on, does not always seem to match the written description of temperament or exercise requirements. This sense of disjunction is reinforced for me by my own knowledge (gained since choosing a Boxer last year) of specific breeds, since I often find myself agreeing with the written statement but quibbling with the number rating: I just don't think, based on my experience and other reading, that those numbers are especially reliable. To name one instance that I'm very familiar with, I think that Boxers are actually friendlier to strangers and other dogs than the number rating would suggest: it gives a 3 rating, where I would make it a 4 (and I live in a neighbourhood bursting at the seams with dogs, including several Boxers). Similarly, the Boxer rating for 'watchdog ability' is a 3, but I wonder why: my dog knows when a delivery has been put by the door, or when anyone approaches, or even when the local cats are across the street. If there is a degree of watchfulness greater than this, such that a 3 is merely average and 5 is extreme, how so? Being more of a barker doesn't seem to me sufficient to up a dog's score, and this could all be misleading to someone trying to make decisions on the basis of the ratings. Most people that want a watchful dog would be well pleased with a Boxer, but the rating suggests instead that they are just OK in that department. But again, whether you agree with the specific ratings or not, they themselves don't seem to agree completely with the text. Another flaw is that, while each breed has two photos to represent it, some breeds are represented by only one individual. Going back to the Boxer again as my example, only a fawn Boxer is shown--apparently the same dog. It would have been more helpful to have a second photo of a brindle coat (dark streaks) and/or different white markings (flashing). Further, many dog owners these days prefer Boxers and other dogs with uncropped ears, but only cropped ears are shown, even in the diagram. That is just a refusal to show the dog as most non-show people see it! The problem is not just with Boxers; several other breeds I think are not represented with sufficient variety of photographs. In sum, this is a good book but it is far from being the best, and leaves much scope for competitors in a popular subject.

Only 150 breeds?!?!

I already have some encyclopedias on dog breeds, including Bruce Fogle with over 400 breeds, but they didn't really have enough facts. Mostly pictures and some core information about size, color and origin country. So I needed a book with more in depth information about history of origin and bred abilities. This book at least had more of that information than most others. The really huge disappointment with this book was that it only had 150 breeds and there were so many missing. None of my own dogs are included and neither are many of the dogs I am working with. Many dogs common in Europe are left out, which makes this book not as useful outside of America. 150 breeds is not even close to covering what it should to be called an encyclopedia. I understand that there has to be a trade-off between information and the number of breeds included in a book, but AT LEAST there should be a second book with 150 other breeds to compensate! I am requesting the second book with the left out breeds before you write a third edition of this one.

Two paws up, way up!

This is an excellent book which provides just enough insight and expertise for casual dog fans and owners without overdoing it. More intense, information-hungry dog aficionados might want more but that's not what the book delivers. The quality of the pictures is outstanding and give an accurate representation of the dogs appearance, although there aren't too many (if any, as I recall) of the depicted breeds as pups. The rating system for strengths and weaknesses of each breed is an extremely effective way to quickly educate the readers, especially on types they may not be familiar with. I'd give the book a five star rating, but then Dr. Coile would have nothing to shoot for.

Gregg L. Friedman MD, Psychiatrist, Hallandale Beach, FL

This book provides an excellent overview of the various breeds including their positive and negative traits and well as health issues that are unique to certain breeds. By Gregg L. Friedman MD, Psychiatrist, Hallandale Beach, FL

A Good General Overview

A good reference book for various dog breeds. Obviously, it does not go into great detail about all of the breeds BUT it does provide a good overview of the various breeds in question. If you are buying it to obtain information about a specific breed, then this is NOT the book that you need. A breed specific book would be much better. If, on the other hand, you want a good starting point for the various dog breeds, then this is the book for you. Provides ideal information if you are thinking of buying a dog but don't know what breed to get.

Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds

Fabulous coffee table book with excellent pictures of every dog breed. More importantly, a must get for the person (like me) planning to get a puppy. The thorough text told about characteristics of the breed so I could narrow down the options and get the puppy that really suited me. Now that I have that puppy (Havanese) I continue to refer to the book as I hear about or see other breeds that I want to learn about.

Great for a Beginer to the Dog World

this is a great book for those who are new to the dog world, has great pics and accurate info on the breeds,if you are looking to see which purbred is best for your family this is a Very good guide, the only drawback for me is that it only covers AKC registered breeds,if you are looking for the lesser known or non-AKC breeds(which are just as good as a AKC breed)this book will not give you what you want.all in all though it is a good book for a beginer.

EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!

IS THE BEST COMPLEMENT FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME, THAT NEED TO REMEMBER SEEING COLOR. IF YOU HAVE THE AKC BOOK AND NEED TO STUDY, THIS ONE IS A MUST TO ADD IN YOUR LIBRARY.

My first purchase

My 6 year old granddaughter loved the book received as an Christmas present. last seen she was busy comparing her list of desirable traits to vfind the right dog for her, which she may get when she is 13. I found this , my first purchase from Amazon really easy.

great book worth twice the price

I bought this book for my son's tenth birthday. He is crazy about dogs. This is a fantastic book-very informative, great photos, good quality and basically a nice read. It is easy to pick it up and flick through it.My son spends hours reading and rereading it. We have similar books that are not opened now that he has this one. Well worth the modest price!

Excellent Reference Book on Dogs

This book is easy to read and has all the good and bad right there for you to see. The descriptions are accurate and it is very easy to make comparisons of the different breeds. Overall this is an excellent reference book at a very reasonable price.

It was a hit!

Our dog-loving daughter begged for this book after she checked it out from our local library. The book came in great shape and she loves it!

Colorful and informative

This is a great overview of AKC breeds. There are 2 full color photos (not drawings) of the dogs. I refer to this book all the time. It covers the history of the breeds, statistics, temperment, personality, health isuues, and much more. I bought one for me and one for my sister. I highly recommend this book!

takes the mystery out of buying a dog

This book was well organized and helped take the mystery of which dog breeds were right for my family when we were purchasing a dog. I more than paid for itself in that task alone.

Nice Quality Reference Book

I bought this book for my wife who is training to be a vet tech & absolutely loves dogs. Good general information plus several pictures for each breed. Well worth the price.

A dog gone good book!

As an avid fan of dogs and other things related to general caninery, I have found this book an absolute joy as both a research companion, and a flotation device. I have a mixed breed daschund/pomeranian, and he's quite the fetcher! This book gives him something fantastic to chase, and if and when I choose to stud my dog, I'm sure the nice pictures of bitches in this book will get him ready to reproduce. An excellent read all around.

A great resource

I found this to be very helpful as my family was searching for a new puppy. We were able to see and learn about breeds we had never even heard of.

Good Dog Book

Great book with lots of information but a bit large and heavy.

Nothing special

Skip this book, buy The Original Dog Bible: The Definitive Source to All Things Dog instead, which contains all the info you might find in "The Encyclopedia" plus much more.

Excellent source of information

I really enjoyed going thru this encyclopedia. It helped me judge which dog was right for my family.

Not quite as billed

Although item was billed as "like new," back of book had been bent; spine was rather used. Book condition was decent though not new.

Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds

The book is wonderful. It has a "scoring" system which enables the reader to determine how much affection, exercise, intelligence etc. the particular breed has/needs. We chose the breed we want (Golden Retriever) by comparing it with the others. Only problem with the book was that the binding was upside down. When you open the book, the "guts" are upside down. Other than that, the book was great.
