Praise for Educating Nurses

"This book represents a call to arms, a call for nursing educators and programs to step up in our preparation of nurses. This book will incite controversy, wonderful debate, and dialogue among nurses and others. It is a must-read for every nurse educator and for every nurse that yearns for nursing to acknowledge and reach for the real difference that nursing can make in safety and quality in health care."
Beverly Malone, chief executive officer, National League for Nursing

"This book describes specific steps that will enable a new system to improve both nursing formation and patient care. It provides a timely and essential element to health care reform."
David C. Leach, former executive director, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education

"The ideas about caregiving developed here make a profoundly philosophical and intellectually innovative contribution to medicine as well as all healing professions, and to anyone concerned with ethics. This groundbreaking work is both paradigm-shifting and delightful to read."

Was for school but great read

I read this for my MSN in Nursing Education but really love this book and believe in what it calls for. Great read.

Well done

A cohesive set of observations and recommendations. More than anything else, it’s frankly reassuring to me that after all these years of nursing education, I’m not alone in the observation that our focus on fact memorization is misguided and impractical. Thank you for having the courage to address these issues.

change is inevitable, lets make it good change!

Purchased this for a class, but really enjoyed the book, Change is inevitable, but we need to be able to make positive change and as leaders help others adapt to the change. This book is a great resource that I will be keeping on my book shelf

another classic - a standard if you are an educator....

New

Will critique later have not had a chance to thoroughly read this the beginning of the semester my professor highly recommended

Book needs updating.

As expected, but information is outdated.

Pat Benner is a Queen

One of my favorite scholars, Pat Benner brings it. Her work is thoughtful and complex, and this book unites the best of all minds to take a hard look at modern day nursing education. The authors fearlessly assert that it's just not good enough, and thankfully, clearly offer the suggestion of where to go next. Well written, easy to follow, and fodder for the contemplative mind. Excellent!

Theory into Practice

One of the most difficult efforts we engage as educators is to move theory into practice. It certainly does take a great deal of educated understanding to see the underlying fabric that Benner is attempting to highlight. She makes an important point that plagues not only nursing educators, but educators in all disciplines: Few are ever taught how to teach. This book summarizes the result of 10 years of research sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation. It has a Foreword by Carnegie president emeritus Lee Shulman. Saying this brings to mind the increasing importance of what is called "the backstory." As the educational environment becomes more and more technological, more demanding, more thick with current and developing knowledge, it is important to be able to evaluate the sources of pronouncement: Ask active, What are their warrants? Benner & Shulman have those warrants. This book is not a warm-fuzzy; it is a clarion call to educators that coffee is brewing (in the form of reduced clinical sites; more complex information; increasing standards for certification) and that they should check it out with the goal of responding proactively.

Nice framework

I was hoping the book would be more of a blue print on how to improve the profession. It would have been more helpful if there were tables and algorithms on how to get from where we are in nursing to where we need to go.

Great book!

This book by Dr. Benner is a great read. It presents wonderful recommendations to promote/advance educating nurses.

Pat Benner scores again. Thank you for publishing this very valuable work

Patricia Benner wrote a landmark book, "From Novice to Expert." In this book she follows through with advice to fellow nurse educators. Benner is always worth reading -- and taking to heart. A must have work for nurse educators, administrators and graduate students.

An important commentary on modern nursing education

I enjoyed this book, both as a nurse, and as an educator. I would recommend other nurse educators read this and consider the ideas for change the authors offer. It was written in an engaging manner, making it an easier read than a textbook, but with the evidence and professionalism expected from a book written for changing educational practice.

excellent contribution to nursing

Excellent book with very essential recommendations for enhancing nursing education. A national conversation has finally taken place about this necessary reform of our nursing curriculum. Once again Dr Patricia Benner has written an honest, cutting edge book which criticques our current education system and offers suggestions for transformation. Thank you Dr Benner!

A Catalyst and Guide With the Potential to Transform Modern Day Nursing Education

Educating nurses: A call for radical transformation (Benner,Sutphen,Leonard,& Day, 2010) is not just another book about what needs to be changed in nursing education curriculums. It is not simply a descriptive summary of the findings from a multi-site study of nine different nursing programs across the country. The scholarly work presented in this book is a collection of what nurses really are, do, and need to be. The authors discuss the issues most urgent for nursing and nursing education today, including: prerequisite courses for entry into nursing schools; licensing and minimum degree requirements; descriptions of best practices in nursing instruction; the need for workforce diversity; and a description of the multi-faceted knowledge base and skills required to provide comprehensive nursing care, are but some of them. It is my opinion that this book has great potential to serve as a catalyst and guide for the implementation of transformational changes in professional nursing education. The book accurately depicts shortcomings and problems present in modern day nursing education. By utilizing theory and clinical knowledge, followed by the identification of those needs most relevant and urgent, it reflects the sense of salience referred to throughout its pages. This scholarly work is not merely a comprehensive assessment of modern day nursing education programs. True to the professional expectations of nurses, the authors effectively share what needs are not only identified, but those that are anticipated and most urgent; while also providing viable solutions to the issues identified. The question remaining is: will nursing leadership will merely note the assessment results, or make the time to take that action which is in the best interest of our patients and colleagues? This book is a must read for all present and future nurses!

Important to Read

As a nurse and educator, I am finding this book validating and filled with insights. Many educators today, like me, were educated when the healthcare environment was simpler and nursing care was less complex. Today's needs are much different as are the students. "Educating Nurses" defines the need for change as well as the change needed.

Great resource

This book is very helpful to not only new nursing faculty but older faculty. The book is a great resource in why and how nursing education needs to be revamped for the future of the profession. I am using material from the book as a source in my dissertation. The expertise of Benner's knowledge is displayed in the book.

Attn Nursing Educators!

Fabulous

Benner and associates do an amazing job describing the faults with nursing education that exist in relation to the rapid changes in actual nursing care occurring over the recent 3-5 decades. Well-written and inspiring to nurse educators to do better.

A must for all nurse educators

New and innovative ideas to help nursing students learn. Focuses on the learner not the teacher. Excellent examples of innovative ways to teach in today's classroims and ways to deal with lack of clinical sites

Nursing Education: A call for Radical Transformation

A great book! will be another timeless classic on every Nurse Educators shelf. It is not a light read; It initiates the conversations in Nursing Education that need to be addressed and calls us to rethink the way we are teaching. It reminds us that we have much work to do in terms of Nursing Education Research. The paradigm cases are phenomenal. Unfolding cases by Dr. Lisa Day are also exceptional. I bought this direct from the publisher last fall before it hit the Book Retailers at full price because I could not wait.

Required reading for nursing educators!

Pat Benner and her colleagues have brought to the forefront the many issues and challenges of our current nursing education system. They haven't stopped there though. They have also provided a blueprint for changes that need to be considered and implemented if we are to continue graduating qualified nursing candidates. This book should be required reading for all nursing educators.
