What is the hardest challenge you’ve faced as a student of the German language?

You can work hard on your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, but being able to communicate naturally isn’t easy.

In fact, the toughest part of learning German is knowing how to speak like a native.

Most textbooks are made to teach you the traditional rules and structures of a language and are great for getting around the grammar and spelling questions you may have.

However, how many of them provide you the tools necessary to have a common conversation with a best friend or someone you’ve just met? Not many at all.

Language learners often complain about this – a lack of material that can help you familiarize yourself with the most common phrases used in everyday conversation and in native surroundings.

For this reason, we at Lingo Mastery have developed Easy German Phrase Book: Over 1500 Common Phrases for Everyday Use and Travel for you, our favorite language-learner, so that you may find the best expressions for common usage in Germany and communicate with your German friends, colleagues and client without any issue!

In this book:

  • An introduction with a detailed guide on how to pronounce vowels and consonants (as well as their combinations) in the German tongue.
  • A list of over 1,500 common phrases in German, with an accurate translation in English for your understanding.
  • A phonetics pronunciation guide of each and every word in the phrases, included after every translation.
  • Finally, a conclusion to make sure you’ve learned and supply you with a final list of tips.

Your days struggling with natural communication with natives is finally over. Our Easy German Phrase Book is here.

It’s time for you to take your German to the next level.

SPEAKING GERMAN ALMOST LIKE A NATIVE

During my college days, about 45 years, I had Sociology as my major for which I’d received my BA, and for my minor, I wound up taking German. Back in those days, my oral comprehension had been excellent [I’d received an A], reading comprehension had been a B+, with my writing being somewhat lower. It is the oral capabilities that are the most important that one needs to communicate with others in German. While my oral comprehension of spoken German going from German to English after all of these years is still relatively quite decent after all of these years. However, these days, due to lack of an opportunity to speak German, I’ve got problems trying to formulate what I’d like to say in German. The reason I’m mentioning this is that my dear OH and I plan to travel to Germany got pre-empted due to family matters. Now due to the COVID-19 virus, our plan has once again due foiled. When traveling abroad to any European country, its citizens appreciate it when tourists try to communicate in the country’s language. The best thing about this particular book is its continued use of the phonetic pronunciation of each phrase throughout its pages. The phonetic pronunciation gives the book’s English readers the correct way to speak German in a manner they’ll be able to understand. For wanting to enrich its reader’s ability to speak German as if they’re a native, by providing them with the most useful phrased they might encounter or want to speak, I’ve given the book’s publisher 5 STARS for its endeavor.

‘Schau dir all die Farben an’ – Look at all the colors!

Lucky for us Lingo Mastery continues its mission – to make other languages more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘If you have finally decided to visit a German-speaking country, countries rich in history and culture, you may want to consider the words and phrases that might be of use in certain situations. English is the second language people learn at school in these countries, so you should be able to get through well with English, especially I the cities. In the countryside, however, or with older people, you’ll be thankful for possessing at leas basic-level German language skills.’ After their success teaching Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, Dutch, Russian and now they enhance their previous teaching of German! And it works. Not only are the phrases presented useful, but also the additional experience of correct pronunciation of the German language, umlauts, diphthongs and all, is indispensible to learning proper communication – verbiage and how to use the words correctly. A very impressive guide is provided on how to pronounce vowels and consonants (as well as their combinations) in the German tongue, along with a phonetics pronunciation guide of each and every word in the phrases, included after every translation. Taking it slowly, step by step with practice, German phrases become accessible! The technique is solid and the lessons well taught. This is a very fine introduction to German language that may arise when you visit German-speaking countries, appropriate for all age levels. Take the journey into a new language! Grady Harp, May 20

Great book to learn German!

This is a great book to introduce learners to a new language. The beginning goes through the alphabet and provides the correct pronunciation. Then each phrase is given in English, German, and the phonetic pronunciation of the phrase in German. The phrases go through a large spectrum from easy to more difficult and some of the phrases are really funny like, "You stole my shoes and I would like them back." It was fun to look for these phrases that would actually come in handy in some situations but may not be something you would think of as normal conversation. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn German!!

Words and phrases grouped by topic

The book provides single important key words as well as phrases and questions grouped by topics, from colours and numbers to phrases asking for direction or at the doctor. It covers a wide variety of topics. Each word/phrase is first given in English, below that in German, and below that again an attempt to write a phonic version of the word/phrase, based on the English pronunciation. As long as you are familiar with English phonetic rules, it kind of works - in not - ignore the last line and figure out the pronunciation on your own. Personally I am not keen on this kind of approach to learn a language, but I understand the need, that when you travel or have newly arrived in a country you have no language knowledge of, to have a quick guide at your finger tips.... I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Many helpful and useful phrases!

I love phrasebooks! Typically, I scan through them quickly and find the ones that are relevant to me, my goals, and if I'm traveling. Then to make sure that they stick, I put them into a personal flashcard software like Anki. I've not finished the book yet, but I've read the lion's share. It takes awhile to create hundreds of flashcards! Lingo Mastery is helping to pave the way for easily digestible and graded readers to assist people to acquire a foreign language. Reading is one of my very favorite ways to soak up a language! However, you typically need to know several hundred words over 1,000 before reading can be enjoyable beyond stuff written for children. Lingo Mastery bridges this gap onto more interesting content. Weiter so mit der großen Arbeit!

Every Play Scattergories? Use this book to make a homemade German edition!

The entire phrasebook is broken down into 27 categories. This is your everyday standard language use. It also includes common phrases someone who doesn't know German but finds themselves in Germany may want to use. The only fault is in the kindle edition there are no page numbers. Not entirely necessary but sometimes nice to have as a reference point. My favorite part about this book though is the fact that is makes the pronunciations a little easier by breaking them down per syllable. And of course the book's introduction starts off with explaining what letters and syllables are different from english. Take the time to work through this book and you will feel more comfortable stuttering out "Kann ich eine Speisekarte haben?" when you walk into a restaurant. Take advantage of the audiobook too!

I think the books and audios from Lingo Mastery are great. This book is no exception.

The introduction covers the different pronunciations of vowels and the helpful phonetic interpretation of the symbol they use for their phonetic sounds, which they use throughout the book. There is a beautiful array of English phrases that have the German translation and the phonetic representation. things like, "what times do these shops open in this area," "I would like to set up an appointment with my doctor," "is there a lawyer who speaks English?" There are great examples of the myriad phrases that one needs to interrelate with other German-speaking people.

Practical Phrases

Liked that the phrases were one line statements The questions were making sure that the reader understood the statements. The best benefit of the book is that answers to the questions were provided. The brief statements were categorized to areas of concern (if you were visiting Germany) I would probably follow this author to assist me in learning German.

Another useful tool for German study

As with all the Lingo-Mastery publications, this phrase book is chock full of helpful material. The organization is convenient by topic and the translations natural and intuitive. Students can find patterns throughout that can be applied to figure out new phrases with word substitution, etc. Highly recommended!

Fun companion

I did not expect this to be a road trip favorite but our two kids took to it, having fun with repeating German phrases and playing around with the language. German is like the Lego/Minecraft of languages.

Lots of Good and useful Phrases

Just like it says...the book delivers in the way that the locals would speak and is translated so us in a manner easily understood so you'll sound better in a foreign country.

Excellent Beginner/Intermediate Resource

This book takes you through 1500 common phrases in German in an organized fashion and for students who have not yet acclimated to German pronunciation it includes a pronunciation hint with each entry. This makes for an effective tool for studying German as a spoken language in particular and would work great with partner drills in a class or within a language learning cohort.

Such a helpful book!

What I love about this is that it tells you HOW to pronounce words. As someone living in Germany, I struggle with seeing a word and knowing just how to pronounce it. So many words are similar to English, but pronounced completely differently. This is an awesome book to help you with the basics of learning how to communicate in German so that people can understand you. Highly recommend!

It is extremely helpful in learning these phrases for future conversations!

I really learn a lot from LingoMastery books and they have helped increase my conversational skills. Their books are step-by-step and in an order that really helps you learn. I highly recommend this book!!

Going to Austria

We are hoping to get to Austria for the Christmas Markets. This is a very easy book to use in learning German for travel.

Learn smarter, not harder

A nice wat to spiral your language in from basicto more complex.

Just another great book

Lingo Mastery is always giving great resources for a fast grasping of the language. It's fantastic.

Book review

This book is amazing for learning every-day sentences and how to pronounce these every-day sentences I recommed it for new german lerners

Great reference

Great reference and instructional book. I keep available whenever I am working through my German worksheets

Misprinted and 56 pages cut short

The first 56 pages are upside-down and off centered, so what should be the bottom of the page is missing.

Insightful and simple

The tips are simple and insightful and give you all the guidance to do what you want and need to do while traveling or working in country. They say: Man spricht Deutsch (He/she speaks German) Now you can too! At least what you need to in order to shop, negotiate and know what you’re eating or buying- and how to find a pub, train, toilet or hospital.

Good resource

Learning a foreign language is challenging but having a good resource to learn basic phrases and words is very helpful. German is difficult but learning basic common phrases is important. Good resource. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Great

This is a good book. I learned a few things, and the pronunciation guide is a terrific supplement to an online learning course (like Duolingo). It is also very clean.

Transparent and easy to follow

This book is another well-written establishment in the LingoMastery library! This book is very helpful for those looking for quick and easy access to dialogue that is helpful in many different situations. I highly recommend this book for those travelling to German-speaking countries as well as new students of the German language!

Must have study companion

I find this book really helpful with my studies. I like to write a daily journal and I am always looking up phrases to use. It is an excellent book for travel, for general conversation, and to help with German Language studies.

Difficulties with Easy German

As a teacher of German I found the pronunciation guide here very helpful. I was less impressed by the other sections. The phrases are certainly useful and cover a whole range of situations, but I think they could only be put into practice by someone who already had a basic grasp of the way German works and would be able to understand any response to the questions asked. Although the introductory section explained the distinct formal and informal modes of address in German, some of the phrases were in the "du" form and others in the "Sie"form and I think a beginner would have found this confusing. Especially where only the "Du" form was used in a phrase it should have been indicated that this was informal use and the formal "Sie" form should also have been given.

A bit bonkers

Features such everyday phrases as: Are the roads paved in this area? Don’t sit on my car and stay away from it. You stole my shoes and I would like them back. I don’t think we should see each other anymore. It's the ultimate insult, breaking up with someone via German Phrase Book! Although if they've stolen your shoes, fair enough. Possibly worth buying for the comedy value alone

A very useful guide.

I've just started out on my German learning journey. I've downloaded a Paul Noble audiobook for when I'm walking, and use a couple of Apps on a daily basis. I've found the book to be a very useful addition to this

Common Phrases for Everyday Use

I found the book helpful for the more common phrases. The phonetic pronunciation guide is very useful. The English is aimed at American Speakers e.g. sidewalk instead of pavement, but this does not detract. Occasionally the examples given are odd e.g. ˋ I would like you to paint my house blue ' but most are useful. A useful book to use in a group setting.

Lingo Mastery....says it all.

This book has been very useful to my wife and I as we come to terms with basic German in our adopted 'home' town in Austria. We have encountered situations in the village and (for myself) at work in Turkey (with German-speaking colleagues) where exposure to the book have served as reminders of how to phrase sentences for specific situations. I love it. Apologies for the delayed revision.

a useful guide to take on travels to Germany

Having only just started learning german for traveling find these guides really useful and handy.

Making sense

Good book.. Helpful

Nice to have

I ve just started to learn German , so any aid to pronunciation and every day expression is extremely helpful. Was relatively cheap and would have been free if I had opened my email sooner!

Excellent Pronounciation Guide

This book starts with an excellent pronounciation guide, which I found extremely useful

Good German learning tool

Excellent and easy to use alongside an audiobook

Does what it promises to do !!!

Easy German Phrase book is a great starting point for somebody who has just started it journey towards learning German language. It's equally good for someone whose at the advance level or wants to improve his or her pronunciation. I have learned a lots of new things from this book & looking forward to the new & revised when it's available.

Great insights into the German language

For both Beginners and those looking to master the German Language I would highly recommend investing some few Euros into buying this book and reading it often at least a few pages per day. It really helps.

It's ok.

Some of the translations aren't accurate, but they will work. I was hoping for better accuracy to be able to modify them for different situations.

A must have

excellent for intermediates

great book for beginner!

Very helpful, well-organized phrase book. Helps me a lot, thank you!
