Raised in the ghetto, abandoned as a child, addicted to drugs and women all his life but still able to produce four consecutive #1 hip-hop albums in a row...this is the life and times of the darkest and most dangerously introspective hip-hop artist ever—at the height of his career and completely uncensored
His real name is Earl Simmons. As a child he placed higher on tests than his fellow students, and liked to spend mornings with his mother and sisters playing games and making pancakes. But for young Earl—a boy growing up on the streets of Yonkers, New York—that kind of childhood didn’t last long. Beatings, abuse, and neglect very soon had him moving on to other things, like robbing, stealing, drugs, and, eventually, jail. Along the way, however, he found a talent and a passion for rhyme.
After 27 years of chaos, struggle, and survival, DMX became one of the biggest stories in contemporary music. But his character goes beyond that. He’s also a father, a husband, and more important, someone who never gave up, and never stopped chasing his dreams. He has dedicated his life and his music to expressing the thoughts and feelings of those who have never been heard before—just as he was never heard as a child.

Love EARL DMX X
I Love this book X is a rapper but also kind of person I grow up with only difference there not famous yet...
A Great Gift For The Hardcore DMX Fan
I purchased this book because: 1) I'm a mega fan of DMX, he's 13 years older than me. His birthday is the day after mine, it's a Sagittarius thing! ♐♐ 2) I wanted to get a deeper understanding of why he did some of the things that he did and the reasons behind them 3) I knew that it was going to be a good read. I have been seeing a lot of people saying that after they read the book, they didn't like him 🤦🏾♀️ How can you not like somebody that a) does not know that you even exist or give a damn what you think about him and b) you have never been through the trials and tribulations that he has been through. X had a rough childhood and his trust was taken advantage of by a monster called Ready Ron when he was 14, he's the reason why X was addicted to cocaine. He laced the weed with cocaine and let him smoke it, that monster destroyed his life on top of the fact that his mother treated him like crap and allowed her friends with benefits to beat on him. It's a damn shame how he was treated by the very woman that is his own mother! Yeah he had a drug habit but that didn't make a difference, he was a functional addict that took care of his business and more! He was a good guy and a good friend of my father's, my father was once his bodyguard and for many other celebrities. X was not ashamed to pray in front of others, he did a show at Woodstock and he had the audience in prayer and crying because his prayers were very very powerful. Not many people can do that! So before you go saying that you don't like somebody after reading their autobiography, maybe you need to reevaluate yourself and look back at all of the messed up stuff that you have done and said to people back then. Maybe then you'll see that you're not perfect! Listen to the song that he did with Mary J Blige called Coming From and another one called Slippin', and really listen to the words. You can hear the pain through the lyrics by what he's saying and maybe you can relate to what he said. "Do not judge, or you too will be judged"
DMX FOR LIFE!
THIS BOOK PUT DMX FROM NUMBER 3 OR 4 ON MY ALL TIME RAP LIST UP TO NUMBER 2. I STILL GOT PAC AHEAD OF HIM BUT THIS BOOK IS THE TRUTH! THIS IS A GREAT READ FOR ANY HIP HOP FAN
Book is good; DMX is bad
This one was a tough read. It was written well enough, mainly because it was done by former editor of The Source magazine. But the content was very gritty. I like DMX's music. But Earl Simmons the man is a bad guy. I actually don't like the dude now that I read his story. If you really want to know the history of DMX, this is a good read. You can tell there was a lot of research done, not just interviews with DMX, but with the people in his story from the very beginning. Just be prepared for a hard and mostly unhappy story.
Great Read
DMX is my favorite rapper of all time. This book gave a great insight into his early life and his trials and tribulations.
very vivid and detailed
Dmx provides detailed memories about his childhood, school life, early troubles with the law,his revolving door life in and out of different group homes, his troubles with his mom, strained relationship with his father who left home at a very early age,he explains in detail what he remembers thinking and going through certain times in his life, his book is very impressive with his memory,he explains meeting his ex wife....opening acts for big names in the early 90's all his battles in Yonkers and in other clubs through out NYC.. he explains the birth of his first son,his struggles with his first manager and failed attempts to successfully achieve a record deal. He also vividly tells stories about his love for stray dogs, and his reputation earned by selling his mixtapes in Yonkers to finally getting a deal with Ruff Ryders Def Jam in 97...
Many things that were said made me dislike him. I also read his wife's book
It was interesting, but too violent. Many things that were said made me dislike him. I also read his wife's book, and there were a few discrepancies. I felt he wasn't being completely honest, and wanted to sound tougher than he was & made himself out to be a better husband than he was.
DMX is EARL
DMX-my favorite rapper ever so I already loved the book even before purchase. Fantastic book. I read it in a night. I couldn't stop and just kept turning the pages. Shed a few tears; I felt his anguish and pain. Now when I really listen to his lyrics and watch his musc videos, I have a better understanding and appreciation of his life experiences. Hope one day to meet the artist. DMX-I'm prayin' for you dawg...much love from NYC.
Very good book
I've always had mad love for DMX and his music. Reading this book, gave me a better understanding of him as a man and what he went through. It made want to cry and it also made me mad. Not mad at X, but what he went through and how he was treated. But in the end, got what he worked so hard to achieve. DMX 4Life. Rest in peace King. You made your mark.

One of the Best to ever do it!
One of the best Autobiography’s I’ve ever read! I’ve even given it as gifts to some of the young men in my family.
Amazing read
Learning of his life and why he behaved the way he did was Soo amazing. His mother was horrible and as parents we need to see how the way we raise our kids really effects them for the long run. I definitely recommend this book to all to read
Loved it
J'ai adoré ce livre et comme il parle de sa vie. I grew up listening to his music and he kills it always with his lyrics. Rest in peace/power DMX.
My favorite book 📚
I had this book about 10 years ago and I lost it. I was so glad to get it again. I just hate that I had to get it after he has passed away. This was the best book ever.
Love it
Amazing and it’s my second one to purchase. They only bad thing it came damaged and wet. Couldn’t exchange it because it was the last one. Didn’t want my money back either. So I kept it as it is
DMX Fan forever
I thoroughly enjoyed the Autobiography of DMX. It was a well written account of the Rap Artist and Actor's life. His story was captivating, turbulent, sad, and riveting all at once. Thanks Smokey Fontaine for putting DMX's life into print for the world to take a glimpse into the story, behind the man, Earl Simmons aka DMX.
Good book
I bought this book after his death. It really details his childhood. I’m still reading it but it was worth the money
MASTERPIECE!
Earl "DMX" Simmons was an amazing rapper and father. As we know, from his story of growing up in Yonkers, NY, School Street (home of the brave!), it was NOT easy. For those who judged him because of his past, you never know an individual until you stepped into their shoes. SIP DMX!!🙏🏾❤️ Gone and will never be forgotten ❤️
Great Read
This book was everything I thought it would be. Heartwarming, Funny, and raw. He gives an in depth look into his childhood and what it was like living in a home where he didn't feel loved. I don't want to give away everything but I highly recommend this book

Great quality!

Great book
This book was very well written and is a must read. Learning about where people come from, what causes them to tick, etc. really makes you have a better understanding of that person. I wasn't a huge fan of his music, but after reading this book and listening to the lyrics I have a new respect for him. Now lets hope he recovers from his crack binge to put out good music.
A book for true fans
Chapter 1 already has me emotional. This is truly an in-depth look into the life of DMX. It’s a great book.
O.M.G
I bought this book for my fiance' who is a DMX fan. He said the book was amazing.
X is great
I bought this book on a impulsive thought that there is something more to Earl Simmons (DMX) than meets the eye. Upon reading the first few pages, I just couldn't put it down. The insight he gives the reader into his life is amazing. I've always loved X's music, and now I have a thousand more reasons to respect him as a person, a father, a husband, and an artist. Great book!

The Man behind the Music
I thought I knew everything....we were only touching the surface!
Good purchase (Personally)
What I like about this book was how X didn't seem to hold anything back. All the ups and down were outlined. The only bad thing about this book was that I got it kind of late. It was published I believe in 2003, I got it in 2013. I only hope that X has a more recent one published because since 2003 I know he's had more ups and downs.
Five Stars
It explains so much.

E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX
After being a fan of DMX, I wanted to learn more about him. I had seen that he released a book, so I figured that I should start there. I loved it. It's a book that you could possibly read in one sitting; his life is just that interesting, coupled with the fact that it's written in a kind-of conversational manner. It's very detailed and comprehensive in that he takes you from the day he was born to the release of his first album and rise to stardom. I would recommend this book for any DMX fan or just anyone who is curious to know the man behind the music.
E.A.R.L.

Quick
Received my book on date I was supposed to, there's even this cute note inside the front cover which I'm assuming is from the previous owner.
Bait & Switch
This seller canceled my order & then relisted the book at a higher selling & shipping price. I am not at all happy. Amazon has not even bother to respond to my comments to them about it either. I 'HAD' to give it a 1 star rating because I was unable to list this if I didnt -- Personally I give them a MINUS 10 rating
I dislike it
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, if I could return it, I would. I didn't enjoy this book at all. It was a waste of my time to even finish this book. The only reason I purchased this book, because I had purchase his wife book Tashera Simmons .Well I didn't purchase his wife's book, it was giving to me from my daughter and it was a nice read. So I was curious to learn more about this DMX, and as I said above, I dislike it.
Brutally honest... and by brutal I mean BRUTAL.
Interesting read for the more part. But I must say, DMX have been one of my favorite rappers of all time. Reading this however made me change my opinion greatly of a guy I kind of considered a youth hero of mines. He pretty much went from hero to villain with this book, I never realised how much pain (physical and mental) and suffering he selfishly has caused to so many people (and animals) throughout his life and it doesn't appear that he feels much remorse about it. So yeah, while I appreciate the honesty, I almost wish I hadn't read it now cause I'm not sure if I'm able to listen to his music in the same light again or feel the pain in his emotional songs which was one of DMX strongest points as a rapper. Actually reading the book made me think DMX was more and more unlikeable by the chapter starting off thinking he was a bit of a victim, then a bully then eventually a full out monster more or less... Came to the point when I actually started finding myself smiling whenever he got into trouble and Karma got back at him.
Read it years ago
When the book first came out I read it. I never read books, it's not a hobby. But I couldn't put this down. So much that 15-20 years later I still talk about it to people and WANT to read it again. DMX kept it real. I've always been a fan from day 1. Seen him in concert many times and met him in person. He had skeletons as we ALL do. Not everyone has a great life. For someone to say they don't like him after reading this says a lot about them. He had an amazing talent. He was a humble man. And this book is a great read for any DMX fan.
X Tha Great
Waiting on my copy. Rest in heaven DMX the Great! We will never forget you 🕊💙
Great book
In my thoughts and/or opinions I had read this particular novel couple of years ago, and I had read it 1. I enjoy 📚 it 2. Was stunning and amazing 3. The trails and tribulations ( but then again everyone's goes test and tribulations) 4. The raise and fails 5. Success and pain Every goes through pain, struggling, test and tribulations . Despite what he went through God came first and/or was cautions of God
Animal cruelty
I’m a fan, and I am glad to gain insight from this book. That being said... DMX flat-out admits to torturing animals; he writes candidly about how he would sic his dog on cats they’d come across and laugh while said dog mauled cat to death. IIRC he did this with more than one dog. WHEN has training a dog to rip smaller animals apart EVER been good for the dog?? Makes those animal cruelty charges a little more believable now
So R.E.A.L
This book is about LIFE more than it is about anything. DMX isn't just a rapper...he's an enlightened soul. His experiences are the experiences of many who've walked a difficult path and been tested and come out of it to say something meaningful and show the world something real. I know now why is music has always held such an energy for many: because it's real. The truth is in the details. The book shows how physical abuse and emotional neglect at the hands of a care-taker can turn a potentially gifted, beautiful young mind into a delinquent by the age of 10 who ends up being abused over and over again in the streets and in the system. His story is the story of many and should be taught in schools. That he survived what he went through is a testament not only to his greatness and originality but to his higher angels (which he talks about in part). Everything comes together nicely- his thoughts, his words, the raps, the humor in places... The last few chapters in particular hold great meaning. It's the turning point where he realizes an important lesson in karma. During the middle passage of this book you shake your head over and over again as page after endless page he does nothing but terrible things (which he is paradoxically very aware of) and you worry for him that one day his chickens will come home to roost. Then finally... Reading this book was therapy for me. I felt that if someone like him could go through what he went through and come out of it, maybe there's hope for me too though my life experiences are nothing like his. DMX is still battling his demons and understandably so. But I wish him the best of luck because clearly he is on the right path and is inspiring many. Keep being real! And stay alive...because you're an earth angel to others whether or not you realize it.
This book changed my life
The headline says it all, it gives you a raw perspective of life on the streets. He had no chance but he made it. RIP DMX. You truly was a motivational person, loved that about you.
Surprised!!!
This book really surprised me. I like DMX as a performer, but my admiration for him subsided when I read an article about him in Vibe magazine. I read how foul he is to his wife, by cheating on her with several different women; I guess that comes with the lifestyle, but whatever. After that I really didn't listen to his records that much because they seemed to have been getting corny, I think his first album was the best. Then I read this book and I was shocked to and intrigued when I read about his life, from a toddler to who he is today. I respect the way he talks about his wife now and his kids and how much he loves them and that they are his life. I didn't not know that he had a drug problem, for some reason that really surprised me. I was also surprised to find out that he was the one who came up with the "spelling" style of rap, that K-Solo bit off of him, for some reason I found that hard to believe. I didn't like when he said that he was going to teach his son how to smoke his first blunt and that he was his dog first and his father second. When I read that I felt sorry for his son, because that means he is taking that dog stuff to seriously. He also bragged about giving his brother his first blunt and got him hook on weed. I wasn't too crazy about that but I guess that was the realness of the book. Overall, the story was very interesting and I like to see autobiographies from my generation, especially those who game straight from the ghetto, like me. Later!!!
EARL-Ever Always Real Life
In E.A.R.L., rapper/actor, Earl Simmons AKA DMX gives us an uncensored look at his life. From an abused child with severe asthma to a mischievous young man who had to rob to survive, DMX allows us personal glimpses of his life, to allow us to see what he endured to become the man he is today. Like his life, the book is filled with ups and downs. DMX discusses his stints in jail and his addiction to drugs, yet he still talks lovingly about his family and the support that his wife, Tashera, always provided him with, in addition to his love for dogs. Readers who are fans of rap and DMX's music will appreciate the stories of all the rap battles with some of today's biggest stars, as well as dues he had to pay to make it into the music industry. Although the book tells many extraordinary stories, the stories are often told out of sequences, which makes the book choppy and a bit confusing at times. Overall this was a gripping novel that shed light on one of the most prolific artist in the rap industry today. Reviewed by Latoya Carter-Qawiyy ...
A story of the complexities of the American experience....
This book is a story that demonstrates the complexity of the human experience. It provides an insightful and attention-grabbing look into the innerworkings of the American urban experience, highlighting the impact of poverty, unemployment, hopelessness, failure and also perseverence, vision, triumph and success. I decided to read this book because I saw an interview with DMX that revealed an interesting person who was a loyal and devoted husband and father, a man with depth and a unique message to tell. While I think the substance of this book is definitely of 5 star calibre, the overall delivery (particularly the language), does not reflect the highly articulate personality that I saw when DMX was interviewed. On the one hand I can understand that the "keep it real" language was used in order to engage readers that may not normally read on a regular basis, I feel like this strategy has some shortcomings. DMX's story deserves to be heard by many and I feel that some readers may be turned off by the language in the book. In the middle of the book, I was tempted to discontinue reading, having reached the point of saturation with regard to the same old four letter words, hyphenated expletives, etc. However, I continued through and was rewarded by the poetic, powerful and thought-provoking ending of the book. So, that said, I say read this book and digest the fruits of this satisfying life story (and the accompanying lyrics). I hope that more such stories get told and if you are left feeling angry about some of the things that are done to DMX (and that he does as well) and frustrated by the shortfalls of the American experience/dream for many young Americans, suggest the book to a friend. I hope you find this commentary useful ;).....
E.A.R.L.- Ever Always Real Life
This book was one of the best books that I have ever read, and I am a very avid reader. Most autobiographies read like television documentaries and tend to leave out a lot of stuff. DMX keeps it as raw as could be. Starting out talking about how he constantly still has nightmares,Earl takes us on a journey through Yonkers where he grew up without a father and a mother who didn't care. Growing up people always referred to him as Crazy Earl and problem child, and he made it true for them. Resorting to robbing and stealing, Earl began his incarceration at the age of 10. Going from groups homes to the hole, he found lyrics to help ease all of the pain that he suffered. The only solace in his life came when he found his wife, Tashera, and then he was shown unconditional love. She stuck by his side through his drug addiction and was there for him when he got beaten up so badly his jaws were wired shut for four months. This book is a must read for young boys who think that they want to live a street life. This could also be an eye-opener for a lot of adults who don't understand rappers and "hoodlems. Most of these people don't chose this lifestyle, it chooses them and they have to live with it. In the words of DMX, "To live is to suffer, but to survive, well, that's to find meaning in the suffering".
I would not consider this an autobiography...
This book is short stories about different times of his life. I really wanted more..more about the "pain" that followed him til the day he died. I think there is more to his pain story that he is willing to tell
Universal Story
"E.A.R.L." in my opinion is what you would call a universal life story. This book is an autobiography on Earl Simmons who is also known by his rap career name DMX. I say his life is a universal story because the book tells his story, from his life as a kid living in a unstable home with only his mother, and getting beaten by many of her short term boyfriends. All the way through his teen years after he ran away and was involved with drugs, gangs, sexual assaults, and numerous jail terms until he was discovered by Def jam records. His life took so many turns in either the physical, mental, or spiritual states through out the book. He dealt with most problems that a every day Joe would have to deal with as well as internal habits and traits that some people wouldn't dream of. "E.A.R.L." is also a inspirational read for any and every one who comes from a bad neighbor hood. It shows it doesn't matter where you come from it matters what you learn and how you apply it to where you are going. "One time always f***s with n*****s cant keep they d**n hand out the biz, but can get away with it. Cause white is right." The author used this as a form of stereotyping. This is trying to say that since the cop or cops are white whether they are right or wrong since they are white it automatically makes them right because of our crooked form of "justice". God bless Earl Simmons aka DMX
I actually been a fan to DMX since beginning to hear the song "We Right Here" from the CD in 2001 "The Right Depression". Boy I was amazed when I heard him rap about God and everything. That's why I became a fan to him instantly. I can remember 1 time I wasn't even into him as much 'cuz he maybe kinda cool but made the difference to give him a shot even tho he talks positively in his rhymes. I praise DMX for being such a good prophet to the Lord and hopefully he'll come back and release another album ASAP. 'Cuz the last CD he dropped was "Grand Champ" in 2003. I believe he's taking time off from the mic 4 a minute to focus on his acting career and everything. I heard that he may become a minister in a church or in a prison. Long period of time, I luv to go pick it up even tho I don't have it yet. I'll still get it used at amazon.com ASAP. Well gotta run. I look forward of DMX putting another 1 in the future. GOD PRAISE YOU FOR YOUR WILL DMX I LUV YOU. KEEP YOUR MIND IN THE LORD BUT NOT MAN.
Highly Recommended
If you really want to read a book and find out a brother's psyche and why he do the things he do, then read this BOOK! Now, I know who DMX is, I don't listen to his music. But I appreciate the time he took to write his life story because to be real, because we got some brothers like DMX out there, and they need to take the time and read this book. We need to know why some brothers go bad and some go good. Why is it that he did? Mind you, this book is raw, you may not appreciate him cussing up in here, it seemed that he kept going to jail and group homes and not doing well in some school and yet, he did do something positive with his life, then check it out.We need to take this book to these young brothers who don't know what they want to do and show them that it don't have to be like that. I would recommend it along with Judge Greg Mathis' Inner City Miracle.
DMX The Great
The book EARL is one of the most appealing books I have ever read. I don't even like to read. But I really liked this book. What got me going as I was reading are the good beginnings of each chapter. The book is about a boy named Earl who lives in Yonkers, NY with his abusive mother. The ghetto, he was living in at that time inspired him to become a rapper because of all the MC s around the streets. It tells how Earl grows up gradually becoming a well know rapper today by the name of, DMX. I thought that was interesting, especially since it's a true story. Plus I like his music a lot. So I thought that it would be cool to learn more about him. However, EARL is a book that junior high - middle school kids should read because the book contains explicit content (foul language and some violence). But I know they will enjoy it! -Molly
Glad to see E.A.R.L has an average 5 star rating!
Man, this book was off the hook. I was stuck to this book. I read it 2 years ago. I bought a copy for my cousin and two of friends just because knowing how good this story was I new it would be a good gift. One of my friends I bought the book for was speechless, he said he had no comment it was so good. I had no idea D.M.X had this type of life. You never know what anyones life is like until you read or hear about it so thats why I had no Idea about D.M.X life. But I am glad he decided to put of a biography. The only down side to the book is that since he wrote the book there has been more things that have happend with him that is all book wirthy, Im sure. He may have to follow his book up with a continuation book. I would read it. The whole book is interesting and intense from his days as a young boy hearing his moms friend cuss and how she cuss good. he said some people cant cuss right but this lady cuss perfectly. To when he escaped from a juvinile facility and was staying with some boy who left him in his basement and never came back. And DMX ended up getting to know the boys family and he said the mother sat on the couch watching to much T.V. To later on in the book when he got jumped by some guys family members because they thought DMX jacked him, which he did`nt. But it was like the boy that cried wolf story with this incident, because DMX robbed so many people it was hard to believe that he did`nt rob this boy. Those men really beat DMX up! His song was Debuting on the radio when he took that beating. Got his Jaw Broke and much, much more. The book was one of my favorites!
Surprisingly Impressed
I just grabbed this book out of curiosity. I knew of DMX and his music but no fan. Wow, was I impressed. To be completely honest, I figured it wouldn't be so good because frankly, how good of a story can a ghetto playa bring to the table? Well, a very good one in fact. My favorite part of it was that he didn't restrain himself from sounding intimate. He would describe how he was living with nothing and then he had bought a little bouncy ball and that was the shiznit! lol I love that. He appreciated the small things. He still had a heart and needed love no matter how roughed up he was. I got mad respect for him and I feel his story was genuine. DMX did not try to make the projects seem cool or anything. I had a picture the entire time reading it. Dark, gloomy, dirty streets and bad vibes. I recommend this book. Seriously, just read it with an open mind. WOW.
Close, very close
I wanted very badly to like this book more than I did. I enjoy DMX's rap and his ruff delivery style. With that in mind I though this book would give me insight into his life and music, which is does....kind of. First if you a big fan of DMX get this book, I think you will not care about the problems I had with it. For everyone else, this book has some problems. First he seems to glaze over anything that sheds a really bad light on him. For example the shoot out he had in front of his house. He talks about it as if it nothing really happened, but I find that hard to believe. That's just one story out of many where details are left out, leaving me feeling empty and in the dark. Another problem I had was the utterly bizarre chapters and flow of the book. There are strange points of jumping around and side stories that I felt like were unneeded at the point they were inserted. Maybe this has to do with inexperience writer of the book. I don't think he has written many full length books. I think this book should have been edited and polished some more before being sent to printing. But this book has some great stories in it about him. It shows unapologetically his gritty life. It also doesn't REALLY talk about his songs that much, and ends as he is releasing It's Dark & Hell Is Hot. So that was another let down. But I still feel it deserved 4 stars because of everything else it did talk about. So if you can live with the problems I had, you will like the book.
Earl...The Life of DMX
It's amazing how Earl Simmons aka DMX can overcome such a problemed childhood and become one of the most admired Icons. When you watch a famous person on T.V. or listen to them on the radio the first thing that you think about is how rich they are and how famous they are, but you never think about how much they've been through to get this far in life. As a child DMX was abused by his mother and didn't have anyone to take care of his except for his grandmother, which his mother rarely allowed him to go see her. Growing up in the Projects in Yonkers didn't make it any easier for him. Life was very rough for him, but his passion for music opened a brand new life for him, which completely turned his life around. Reading this book was one of the best things i did in my humanities class this year. I couldn't stop reading this book once i started. Reading autobiographies was always one of my favorite things to do because they can teach a person a lot about life in general. Learning from peoples mistakes can help you in life by teahing you not to committe the same mistakes they've made. I would recommend this book to everyone who's a DMX fan and everyone who likes to read about someone else's life. In my opinion i think it's one of the best autobriographies out there. So go get it ASAP
E.A.R.L.
Earl Simmons, the rapper better known as DMX, has had his first four albums enter the charts at No. 1. He is the only artist ever to start off on such a successful streak. That record is especially notable because, in a hip-hop world rendered blindingly bright by a diamonds and bling bling atmosphere, DMX keeps it ruthlessly real. His songs are ferocious, street level battlegrounds, charged in equal part by explosive violence and a desperate yearning for spiritual redemption. Those same currents drive his autobiography, a collaboration with the journalist Smokey D. Fontaine. DMX makes no effort to justify his violent robberies that provided his livelihood for long stretches of his teens and early twenties. He depicts himself in such incorrigible terms, that by the time he's beaten so badly that his jaw needs to be wired shut for three months, you feel he's gotten only what he deserves. Somehow, you're rooting for him every step on his long, slow climb to stardom. That contradiction sums up why this book is like hip-hop at its best. It's a fearsome narrative that raises many more issues than it resolves, and leaves the reader feeling both exhilarated and deeply unsettled.
A very good autobiography.
This book covers the life of the rapper known as DMX. From the moment as a youth to his days as an adult his life story is told. You'll learn the beginnings of current hip hop stars and their associations with DMX. One interesting fact was DMX's constant rap battles and his winning record. One foe was K-Solo who he first met and defeated in prison. K-Solo went on to steal his new type of rap titled Spellbound a form of spelling out words. I remember hearing spellbound on the radio a lot in the early 90's; K-Solo took DMX's idea and made it his own. DMX was determined to get a recoding contract that he lived with his producer, lived in B-more for awhile, moved back to Yonkers, NY. Until he made it big in the rap game DMX moved his family to NJ. DMX noticed that girls began to change after his first album was released. Girls that didn't speak or give any attention started to take notice. One girl asked him to come up stairs, DMX said no you didn't asked before I made it big.
I loved the book..
This book was well written in my opinion. It definitely gives the reader, an insight on who DMX is. I thought the book was written with honesty and it took courage to for X reveal certain things about himself. He had me sitting in AWE a couple of times while reading the book. I listened to all his cds over and you can hear about the struggles he talks about in his book. Much love to X and the "beast" within that he refers to in the book.
Ever Always Real Life
This is the best book I've ever read in my life, which says a lot. I recommend this to anyone who likes DMX, but this ain't for your lil' son or daughter. It'z an all to real view of his life, unaltered. It tells in graphic detail the abuse he went through, and how he overcame all of life's struggles. It's all too real, the storiez he tells. It totally changed my view of DMX, I respect him so much more. He's gone through a lot. some of his comments are quite disturbing- "I found out that if you but 2 roaches in a jar with a piece of hot dog, all of a sudden you'll see little white eggs all over. Baby roach eggs!" There's only one thing I didn't like bout this book- he describes in 100% completely graphic detail how his pitt tore up a cat and racoon. But overall, I believe this book is a great eye-opener to the "real" street life, a must read for many.
R.E.A.L.
There aren't many people who possess the energy and resilience that DMX has. He connects with his audience in ways beyond belief. I met him at a recent performance, was on stage with him the whole time, and was literally blown away. He is one of the greatest performers in the industry today and should be recognized as such. I appreciate his honesty in his book and in his life. What a great man!!
DMX will forever be my favorite
I just ordered this book I can’t wait to read it Rest in Power X
the best autobiography i ever read!
man this book is great, dmx is one of my fav. rappers, before i bought this book i just didn't know most of the things he was talking about, but after reading this you just get everything he says. this book has eveything his been through in his life, from when he was a kid, coming up doing crime, how he got into rap, and how he struggled to get a record deal. anyway even if you don't like X that much i'd still suggest you to buy this book. Peace OUTLAW
Bravo Earl bka DMX!!!!!!!!!!
I Looved this book! He details his life from dam near day one to present day and ur mouth will defintly hang open! He is honest and real as hell in this book rather your a fan or not you'll enjoy this read! Go Get This Book ASAP!!!!!! p.s.= I truly hope he gets his act together as far as crack goes! Too talented to abuse your mind and body that way D!
DMX can you hear me??
It's a naseauting example of our twisted popular ideology to see so many people relieved, elated, that DMX is now "redeemed" or relieved otherwise. Spiritually yearning? You bet. But spiritually satisfied.... "out of the woods," if you will? Nuh uh. Go read the book of 1 John. I pray for this man; though accepted into the beloved of THIS WORLD, there is not one reason to believe his soul has yet come to God's waters. Please pray for him, especially through Isaiah 55, and examine yourself according to Ephisians (and 1 John) that you also are not plummeting toward Hell at terminal velocity. I am a Christian minister of the true God. That said, go ahead and judge me- call me all the names a sinful unregenerate lost person calls God's servants. I've heard them before. Then accuse me of doing what you do; you always do. But after all that, stop bowing to the god of fame and money and worldly success and go to the Bible, or men and women who know the BIBLE, and "count the cost" beloved!
An Even Darker Side to Dark Man X
I was intrigued by this book after I read the first 5 pages. I never knew how much he went through until I read this book. DMX pours his heart and soul into this book and left no stone unturned. He talks about his days as a robber, an addict, and even falling hard for women. Before I read this book, I thought that what he said in his raps were mostly fiction. Now, I know that X is spitting fire from his heart. Cats who say X is the best, know he still is and thats the truth.
I LOVE THIS MAN
DMX is so refreshing! As a rapper I enjoy his style because it's original and he is not all about the flash. I purchased this book as an adoring fan and I was not disappointed. He details his life and how he came to be and where he is today. I truly appreciated his honesty. I got "DOG LOVE" for this brotha!
truth
simply loved it. read it more than once.
The book belongs in the garbage.
This book offers nothing positive at all. DMX lived a negative life and he speaks negative rap. He robbed people (mostly women) as a youngster. He robbed other kids by using his dog. He stole cars. He stole for the thrill and because he wanted nice things without working for them. And he didn't care who he stole from. He stole a chain from his friend (TQ). He would offer his home made tapes for sell to people, take their money and not give them anything. He promotes violence. He spent most of his life victimizing people in and out of jail. At one point in the later chapters and in one of his raps, he implies raping men in jail. He summarizes quickly what his jail time was like, he avoids going into alot of detail about those years. He's showing you the slice of his life that he wants to show. He spends too much time on the earliest years of his life which are uninteresting. He doesn't really cover the parts of his life that most people are interested in. He doesn't talk much about the actual business of music. He doesn't talk about how his life changed with the music business success. He doesn't talk about how he grew as a person or what he learned from his incarcerations. Did he spend his time in jail doing anything positive? Or was his jail time just fighting people and rapping about it? I do appreciate his talent, but not his messages. There were alot of DMX songs that I used to listen to. After reading this book, I see him more vividly now. I see him as a horrible person who I would want nothing to do with. He isn't a person that should be celebrated, he should be ashamed for the life he has led. You shouldn't buy this book. You shouldn't even borrow it. It's a waste of time to read, there are much better, more positive things that you could be doing with your life.
Autobiography of X: Get at it DOG!!!
Just finished the book and man is it deep. X is one of a kind. It's his soul expressed to us in a book. I went back and started watching his old videos and noticed that the book mirrored some of them (Slippin). The guy is off the chain. Brings back memories of when i first heard 'Get At Me Dog' but what makes it great is learning how long and what it took for him to get there. You gotta pickup this book.
E.A.R.L.
This book is a MUST read for anyone who loves hip hop and is intrigued by rapper DMX. I admit when I got this book I put off reading it for awhile because I thought it was gonna be your average biography type book BUT was I suprised!!! This autobiography read like a novel and as you turn each page you want to read more and to know more about DMX. He holds nothing back and is just as raw as his rhymes; you will learn alot about him you would have never even believed if someone else told you but this IS his story. Read this book and you'll feel like you've known him all your life. He definitely has earned his place in the spotlight. Much luv, X!
The Best Autobiography Ever...
This book was the best autobiography...no the best book I have ever read. I read all the other reviews, and they weren't sayin' what they should have been sayin'. Did those people even read the book? Anyway, like his music his book is deep. You can't just read the book and judge it, you also have to know his music and his lyrics. If you know his lyrics before you read the book, then as you read everything his lyrics are saying just kind of falls in place. If you have second thoughts about this book than F**K you, just get and read it...i promise you won't be dissapointed.
Great
This Book Has To Be The Best Autobiography Ever Written About A Rapper Period. The Journey Of DMX'S Life And Trails He's Been Through Maaan!! God Watch Over This Guy The Demons He's Fought and Still Is Fighting To This Day I Think Whoever Reads This Book Will Understand The Passion & Strenght He Puts In His Music And Understand The Trails He Still Goes Through Now In 2013 GREAT READ!!

Its easy to read too because i just got attached to it. I recommend it to anyone who likes rap music or likes DMX.
Great!!!
This book offers an inside look into the life and mind of the ever popular DMX. He has proved himself time and time again, and made the best of a poverished and difficult childhood. DMX is not only a great rapper and entertainer, he is a admirable man. I've read this book four times since buying it (the day it came out) and each time I learn something new about him. This is a great buy that every hip hop fan should have.
For true DMX fans
Have you ever wondered about the rage, passion, and intensity of DMX, well this book will answer all your questions and more. I read this book cover to cover in one day--then I read it again! This book is full of ups and downs, slips and falls, and enough sruggle to make you look at your own life and try and find answers to the questions that have always been in the back of your mind. Read this book you will not be disappointed.

Feel his PAIN!
I read this book in 1 day, i was drawn to his story, his truth, his journey but especially to the love, loyalty and friendship he and Tashera share. He honors her in this book. I pray they keep it tight. This is a true testimate to the rap game, it's a grimmy business and only the strong survive just like in the streets. DMX is to me the BEST rapper out. GOD HAS A PLAN FOR HIM!
Yep Yep!
DMX spits fire in all his raps! This is one of the realist ni&^&'s in the industry. He could do it all. He could rap act and write. One love to DMX for life
amazing...
this is one of the best books i've read in a while, it tells DMX's story like i've never seen it before. I was just a casual DMX fan before i read this, but now I want to get all of his CDs, this book has given me a new respect for him. highly reccomended
Dis is a very good book
This book is incredible. It shows DMX's struggle and how he survived the streets of Younkers. It showed in very good detail the pain he felt after ceartain events. That book pointed out his rage and why he is who he is today. I am very very very very glad I read this book and I hope you guys will be as happy as I was.
Great Book
The Autobiography of DMX is one of the best books I've ever read. It reminds me of my hood now and gives me inspiration to keep my head up. You won't be able to put the book down and will be raving do your friends about. If you want to experience the greatness of the book buy it at BarnesandNoble.com

Never could have imagined what a rough life DMX had. He has truly defied all odds!
Knowledge
Im more interested in the story, the cover well the pic on it is beautiful. But outside of that my copy was poorly made.
Good book
Very good read..I could hear his voice as I read the book
Must read
I didn’t realize that he wrote this book in the beginning of his star days I would have loved to read a book about the rest of it. The last 20 years. But long live ❌
Dogs for life DMX live forever
Everything was great even the the intro to the book I'm definitely gonna read more than 1 time
Must read
Second time reading this book, ordered as I wanted a copy on my bookshelf. X is a complicated person but his easy reading style makes him understandable and relatable. This book also captures the momentum of the golden era of rap. A must for any DMX fan.
The book shows how physical abuse and emotional neglect at the hands of a mother can turn a potentially gifted, beautiful young mind into a delinquent by the age of 10 who ends up being abused over and over again in the streets and in the system. I felt that if someone like him could go through what he went through and come out of it, maybe there's hope for me too though my life experiences are nothing like his, growing up in a middle class suburban family. DMX is still battling his demons and understandably so. But I wish him the best of luck because clearly he is on the right path and is inspiring many. Keep being real! And stay alive...because you're an earth angel to others whether or not you realize it.
AMAZING...
I had read so many reviews around this book before I bought it, but I was still skeptical of whether or not I would even enjoy it. I've always liked DMX on the fact that he was so gutter and raw, and his lyricism was real, no compromise, so I didn't really know what to expect from the book on a whole. Once the book arrived I immediately fast tracked my way through the book I was reading at the time just so I could start this new book and my god I'm happy I didn't leave it to sit like countless others I've bought. This book was amazing from beginning to ending, you find yourself thrown into the depths of DMX's childhood and immediately you begin to question yourself and your own life and upbringing. There were countless times where I felt like X should have had more luck and people on his side, but there was times when he did people dirty and deserved the comeback. It was just eye opening to see the passion he had for rapping and the energy and rush he got from certain things just to keep himself going and denying the pain. "After The dark Comes Light" If your a fan of Hip Hop or specifically a fan of DMX then this is for you.
I don't enjoy reading but....
I am not a reader but this had me hooked and the book was finished in no time. DMX was always an intruging character and this book provides all the context to his music and his life that you will need. I believe anyone could enjoy this book, not just fans of the artist - it's as much about life than it is anything else. Fantastic start to end...
REAL RAW AND AUTHENTIC GREAT READ
This book is so real. I basically finished it in one day, I was glued to finding out about DMX's life story and his experiences as soon as I began reading this auto. He's been through a lot but in my eyes it all contributed to him becoming the dope rap artist he is. Real Raw and authentic, I haven't read a book in a while but this was one hundred per cent worth the read. Respect D
Great buy. Love it

DMX’s unrelenting battle...😢
Recently bought this book after hearing about DMX being hospitalized on April 3, 2021. I hadn’t known he had written a bio. Just started reading it and it’s well written. Always wanted to know more about him. For years, I have wanted him to overcome his drug addiction. I was sad to hear he’s still fighting this battle. He’s such a great musical artist and actor. I love his raspy voice! I do hope he wins this battle. Praying for him and his family. Don’t want to lose another icon too soon. I hope he’s able to find peace.
