An inspiring, empowering book

First of all let me say that I love Dolly Parton personally and I am so excited to see that this series now includes a short biography on her amazing life. She is girl-power on steroids with the ability to inspire those around her. I love all her talents as a singer and songwriter and especially her ability as a savvy business woman. Dolly grew up in the foothills of Tennessee's great Smokey Mountains, with her 11 siblings. Her family"was poor as dirt." They didn't have much but Dolly was gifted with the ability to sing and compose songs, accompanied by her guitar, at a very early age. She dreamed of "jumping onstage with high heels". She was 10 years old when she started singing on a local radio and television station. After high school she set out to fulfill her dreams and headed for Nashville. She loved country music and that is the genre that made her a superstar. She is known worldwide for her musical prowess and being a very generous philanthropist. She has won many music awards, has sung with the most popular music artists, starred in motion pictures, and is founder of a special children's library, "Imagination Library" which sends books to kids in need all over the world. And if that is not enough, ( and it certainly wasn't for this visionary woman), she built a theme park and has become the most successful woman in show business. She has a wonderful sense of humour and loves lifting people up and encouraging them to celebrate themselves. This condensed version of her life has fun, quirky illustrations and includes a biographical timeline with photos and facts about the entertainer's life. Dolly Parton is a true icon and positive role model for young kids everywhere. I highly, highly recommend the book.

Country Music legend Dolly Parton gets the rock-star treatment in this humble, lovely biography.

Quick Rating: Buy & Keep Summary It is impossible to capture the depth of character and career that encompasses the life of Dolly Parton in a child’s board book. This book, however, does an excellent job of distilling the essence of Parton’s spirit and accomplishments into a satisfying peek for both kids and adults alike. Parton, known for her humor, talent and compassion, is followed from her humble beginnings in the foothills of Tennessee, through her accomplishments in music, to her contributions to children’s literacy–all in a scant 32 pages. No small feat! Dolly Parton was once asked in an ABC interview, “[i]s it true that you once said that it’s a good thing you were born a girl, otherwise you would have been a drag queen?” She replied, “[y]es, it is true. Because I’m so over-exaggerated and I have so many fans in the gay community, and the drag queens.” And yes, even her love of makeup is touched upon in the book. Illustrations Solak, who studied graphic design at the Art Academy in Warsaw and Bologna, captures both the complexity of Parton’s life and the simplicity of Parton’s warmth in the illustrations. Solak’s illustrations, appearing childlike at first, do an excellent job of enhancing the static prose (this is a biography, after all) and reinforce the book’s central messages. The illustrations, however, only appear childlike. Take a look at the where Parton is reading a storybook; stop for a moment and focus on the simple points delineating the characters’ eyes. Where are they looking? All of the Children’s eyes are focused on the book–transfixed by the reading and the world of wonder. Where are Parton’s? Lost in the storytelling. These are not childlike renderings. It’s On My Bookshelf Sanchez Vegara has done an outstanding job of capturing a yet unfinished life and making it accessible for both young and old readers. I do have one quibble. I would not introduce this book before the first or second grade, although the reading recommendation begins at Preschool. I just do not think a preschooler would have the attention span or interest in it (unless they know Parton and/or like Country Music). Otherwise, this is a wonderful board book that doubles as a coffee table book. It is a definite buy and keep. My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review. The views expressed herein are my own.

Another great mini-biography for kids with dreams

I just wish this series had been around when I was teaching. These beginning biographies of famous people have just enough information not to overwhelm young people, yet give a basic overview of their lives. This wonderful addition to the series features country music star, Dolly Parton. It touches on the major points of her life, how her dreams and the support of her family helped her launch her career, and adds what she did to give back. It also shows that making it big does not mean you should forget where you came from. I also like that it emphasized how she did not let people's opinions change what she enjoyed, such as wearing her wigs and makeup. Children are very important to Dolly Parton, so I think this book is an especially good fit for this series about following your dreams. One thing I did not know about Dolly, was that she started the Imagination Library, where children receive books in the mail from the time they are born until they begin school. Another way she shows how important children are as well as reading and education. These books have just a few sentences of text per page, complemented by quirky illustrations that will attract children to these books. I normally enjoy the illustrations, but I am a big Dolly Parton fan and this time, they did not appeal to me as much, but that is my personal preference. I can't praise this series enough. If you have the opportunity, check out this book, better yet, check out the series and recommend it to your local library or school library or buy them for the children in your life. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

Dolly Parton is a True Role Model

Isabel Sanchez Vegara does it again, and this time with the support of illustrator, Daria Solak. One of the best series to come out of KidLit in the last few years is ‘Little People, BIG DREAMS.’ While most nonfiction books for children typically pick well know historical figures as their subjects, LPBD highlights Women, People of Color, Scientists, and Artists. The newest title, and my very favorite so far, lets us discover and adore Dolly Parton. Even I, a long-time fan, learned a few things about her while reading, such as, her regular slot on a local radio station at the age of 10 or that her husband’s name is Carl. (How did I not already know that?) This book truly shows its readers what an unstoppable force Dolly is. Her kindness shines through in everything she does, whether it’s the work she does for her own community, or providing books for children all over the world, or showing us all how to be happy with yourself, just as you are. Dolly Parton is a true role model. So THANK YOU Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Daria Solak, & Frances Lincoln for telling the children her story. Thank You to Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books & NetGalley for the digital copy of this book to review.

4 stars!

I love the books in this series and I couldn’t wait to read this one on the fabulous Dolly Parton! I love that these books give an insight in to the back stories of some of the most influential people in the world. The Little People, Big Dreams series is one I always look out for. I love Dolly and think that she is an incredible lady, I did know most of the things mentioned about her in the book, but for me it didn’t really show her full personality which is what makes Dolly Parton so remarkable and special. I felt it was a little lacking compared to some of the others in the series and I didn’t think that the images really did Dolly justice, but it is still four stars from me for this one, I loved that is shared about her charity work and her “as poor as dirt” story; even with my slight niggles, I really enjoyed it, highly recommended!

I like Dolly, but the book is just okay

I wonder if Dolly was interviewed for this book, or if the author decided which facts should be included. I know faith is a big part of Dolly's life, but there was no mention of it in the book. I also wonder if facts were used to make the assertions Dolly became the most popular country music star, and Dolly is the most respected country performer. There is not reference for these statements. Is it just the author's opinion? The book is necessarily kept on a superficial level since the target audience is 2-4 years old. This is a great read-to-me book for an aspiring young singer. This book was provided by NetGalley for an unbiased review.

Best books out there. You won't regret reading them to children of all ages!

I haven't read this book in particular, but it is on my list to get for my granddaughter. We have pretty much bought her the whole set at this point, and at 3 years old, she really get it and loves learning about these women! If you ask her, she will say she Loves Frida Kahlo the best, and yes, she really know who she is and what she is famous for. I think it's incredible how these books have started her down, not just a road to a love of reading, and not just a road to learning about other people's culture and lives, but also how to be a strong woman herself, to know that her life has endless possibilities at the age of 3! Noone even cared that I thought about those things in my whole life, much less when I was a toddler.

Great first time reading this series

I have always been a fan of Dolly Parton due to both her music and her love of sharing books. I'm glad that with Dolly Parton by Isabel Sanchez Vegara I now have a chance to share her story with the children in my life. I really enjoyed the illustrations by Daria Solak as well. This is the first book I have read out of this series and I am looking forward to reading many more.

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara & Daria Solak is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early May. Penciled and watercolor, collage-like illustrations with a quick, lite, condensed version of Parton’s biography. Aww, I didn’t know that she met her husband at a laundromat.

Cute

I enjoy reading these Little people BIG DREAM books. They give just enough information about the person for a child to absorb / regurgitate. The illustrations that accompany these are soft, child-like drawings that go along with the "little people" aspect of this series.

Dolly Comes to Life!

Great for all ages. Inspiring read.

My daughter loves this book (age 8.) The book shows Dolly's childhood and how she always was herself even when other people judged her. It shows how determined she was and what a great role model she is. We love Dolly!

Lovely images + writing

Lovely writing and all paired well with images. These books would make great additions to a personal, classroom, or school library. Engaging biographies with a visual element!

Fan of Dolly? This book is definitely for your kids!

Excellent! The perfect Gift!

Fantastic series!

I started my collection with Dolly Parton and have got another 5 titles since then, all in the music theme. These books are enjoyed by students from grade 1-5 in my music classroom. The information in them has really piqued the students' interest and curiosity. Will be ordering more as they are published!
