"Do not do to others that which would anger you if others did it to you."—Socrates (the Greek philosopher), circa 470-399 B.C.
Mr. Rabbit's new neighbors are Otters. OTTERS! But he doesn't know anything about Otters. Will they get along? Will they be friends? Just treat otters the same way you'd like them to treat you, advises wise Mr. Owl. And so begins Mr. Rabbit's reflection on good manners.
In her smart, quirky style Laurie Keller highlights how to be a good friend and neighbor—just follow the Golden Rule! This title has Common Core connections.

Probably better for older kids.
I love the idea of this book more than the execution. A little too 'much' content for young kids (3-years), and not really conducive to reading aloud. Maybe will be more interesting when it's a 'read this yourself' type of story. Doesn't mean that my toddler doesn't enjoy it, though, so it's still a win in general. Not so much for me right now though unfortunately. I find myself trying to explain more than anything else.
7 yo grandson loved reading it aloud
I hadn't yet previewed it but one night when I was visiting & he needed a more challenging book, this did the trick. Just that day we'd been discussing the importance of honesty. Along with that, other topics regarding good manners & ethics are presented and discussed in VERY humorous ways kids will recall FAR better than any "lecture" could. I highly recommend this for kids 5 to ~9
My kids love it.
Super cute book, my 3 & 5 year old love it and think it’s hilarious. I like what the book teaches, treating others with kindness and respect. I’ve also given it as a gift. The only very minor complaint I have is some of the pages have a lot of text and it can be difficult to get through the book with squirrelly kids.
Beautifully written and illustrated!
I bought this book for my five year old daughter after we had originally loaned it from the public library and she fell in love with it, requesting that I read it to her several times a day. I feel it is very age appropriate for a child 4-8 years old depending on their maturity level. This book is excellent for teaching without lecturing. It also has a lot of humor in it that makes it enjoyable for adults to read to children too. It is beautifully illustrated and entertaining, keeping children's attention throughout the whole book. This is a book that I am thankful my daughter enjoys as it does teach the important lesson of doing unto others as you would want done unto yourself.

Great, colorful pictures but definitely not a good storytime book! The book was way too long and all over the place.
A Good Book With a Good Lesson
Our word for the week at school was respect, and I read this book to my 2nd graders, because it fit well under that topic. The concept of the otters is really funny and had my students laughing. It also provided opportunities for them to make connections and share ways that we could show respect to otters...er...I means others. LOL
LOVE this! And so did my first grade class!
My first graders absolutely LOVE this book! A lot of explaining was necessary with puns and jokes but after discussing certain parts they were roaring with laughter! Also has a great message about treating other people nicely... along with lending itself to discussion about being kind to animals. ❤️
Loved The Illustrations
Bought this as a birthday gift for my 6 year old nephew but I read it with my 6 year old daughter before we gave it to him. It was funny and I loved the illustrations. It was a very nice book. We also bought the other Laurie Keller books and the DVD to go with them.
Teaching kids not to pass judgement before getting to know the facts.
An adorable story about tolerance and new friendship with great play on words and opportunities to teach children a variety of skills. I read it to a group of second graders and we had a great discussion and interactive activity after the reading. Key phrases like “Please,” “ thank you,” and “Excuse me,” are used in different languages. Highly recommend this cute book.
Cute way to teach kids about manners!
Laurie Keller certainly has a vivid imagination, and all of her books play to kids' silly sides. This book is a great way to teach kids about the importance of being polite, without being preachy. My son and I laugh out loud when we read this book. She covers being friendly, saying please, thank you, and excuse me, honesty, cooperation, fair play, sharing, not teasing, forgiveness, and apologizing, and she throws in how to say some of the words in 5 different languages (one being pig Latin!) For those reviewers that slammed her use of passing gas, I feel that this is blown way out of proportion to the book as a whole. It is on one page of the book and it is only one side-bar illustration. And, let's face it, passing gas is funny to a 6 year old, but she shows the importance of having good manners about it if it happens to you. Please, thank you, and excuse me are oftentimes not heard uttered by the age group that she targets, so it is great way to share a story with your child while driving the point home that EVERYONE needs to have good manners. You and your child will thoroughly enjoy this book.

Simply perfection!
Purchased for a unit on character building for my 5th graders. They absolutely loved the story (even though it is geared to younger kiddos). Illustrations and story line were fantastic! I will use this sweet story for years to come!
Well...I love it!
Personally I love this book and think it is hysterical. I tried to read it to my second graders and they didn't find it as funny. It has a lot of "punny" jokes that my students just didn't have the language for. But it's a great book for the beginning of the school year.
My 6 year old and I love this book. It teaches you all the great social skills, while addressing anxieties and fears, and is playful and entertaining in its delivery.
We love how the bunny is so relatable, and how it shows manners not as something we have to do for someone else, but, instead from an inspiring perspective of how we would like other s (otters) to treat us and by doing so allows a true understanding and appreciation for the thoughts and care behind manners.
Cute story
This is such a cute book! It has lots of funny captions and comments. And I love the message that this book sends to young minds. The only thing is that this book is kind of long, so I would not use as a classroom read aloud unless you split it up by sections.
Funny, cute, and good message to give kids
Got this for my 6 year old girl. She likes funny, quirky books and this one has a good message in it. She giggles though the book and has asked to read it several times. Other books she likes are the Fly Guy, Elephant and Piggie, etc.

Kindness Counts!
This is a great book for teaching manners and the importance of kindness. My 6 year old and I both like this book, and I plan to start reading it to my 3 year old soon. It's super cute!
Love this book!
This was such a great choice for our daughter to explain the "Do unto others" we should all live by! The artwork is really cute and our daughter has memorized just about the entire book. Definitely one of our favorites!!
Funny and Character Building
This book is really cute! I like to read at least one social story type book during our nightly routine and this one is a true hit! It teaches manners in a fun way so the kids don’t feel like they’re being lectured about behavior. Lots of puns and has some pop culture references as well.
Great little Read!
Great Read!!! So cute and really has alot of teaching and talking points about manners, different languages, common courtesy and plays on words. It is great for the beginning of the school year to help set your classroom culture and expectations. Great for any grade. I teach middle school and my kiddos loved it!!
A classoc for any Primary classroom.
I love Laurie Keller!!! This is a great book to read at the beginning of the year and again any time the students forget how to be nice. There is a Scholastic video of this that just has the kids( and us as teachers) laughing non-stop!!!
Three Stars
Great concept but not any easy read for smaller children. My 9 year old called it "boring"...
Fantastic and cleaver book
A wonderful take on Do Unto Others As You Would have them do unto you. Very cleaver. I am an elementary school counselor and my second graders really enjoyed the story.
Great book. My 2nd graders loved it
Great book. My 2nd graders loved it. Used it as a part of my lesson on community building the first week of school.
Five Stars
My kiddos loved the rhymes and humor. Great text w a great lesson without being exceedingly didactic.
The children love it. I would recommend this book
This is a cute way to teach children about the differences in others and how we can be friendly to everyone. I am using this book to add to the teaching of "Do Unto Others" in the Church Class that I teach. The children love it. I would recommend this book.
Great book for manners for kiddos
Great book for introducing kids to manners. Love using it in my classroom with my kindergarteners!
Such a cute, creative book!
I love this book so much!!! It’s so clever and cute and I know my class will love it for a read aloud! It’s such a cute way to help kids understand manners. So many cute puns! I am in love with this author! She’s amazing !!
Wonderful book!
Such a great book! Bought for the beginning of the year in the classroom to teacher Do unto Others!! PERFECT BOOK! There is some humor that only some kids offers kids would get. But my 3rd graders loved it!
Important lessons being taught.
This is such a cute book. It is suitable for anyone, not just kids. I can't wait to read it in church. Really recommend.
Fun resource.
Great book for teaching the golden rule. The children loved the story, and I loved the rabbit! I've already lent this out for another class.
Teacher read aloud
Used this for a lesson about treating others the way you want to be treated. My kiddos ADORED it. They always quote it and ask to read it. 1st grade teacher
fun book
Very funny and well written. Ms Keller is a wonderful story teller. Zzmy Granddaughter loved it.
Kids will love this book!
A story with another story and as kids can't get enough there is always something else to find on these very brilliant, very funny pages! "She could have drawn less heavy boxes!"
You and your child will laugh out loud together
I've never seen a better book to introduce children to good manners. This one uses a cute animal premise -- Mr. Rabbit doesn't know how to treat his new neighbors, who are otters -- to build a smart, spirited tale based on the Golden Rule. Each page spread teaches the value of a different type of behavior. One shows how it helps to be friendly, another one honest, another one apologetic. But the book is never preachy, and, in fact, barely serious. There are lots of visual and verbal gags, and the inspired artwork mixes the friendliness of the character designs in the movie
Cute book
Cute book for elementary kids to review manners at the beginning of the year
Manners
This is a fun read aloud book. Both my kids 6 & 7 enjoy it.
I love this book!!
My favorite animal is an otter and i have a son who seems tl lack the concept of the golden rule so: no brainer. Now i have a semi polite and considerate 8 year old reading me a book i dont hate!
It must have been every child's library
Great little book to have in your library
Great story
I appreciate a great story to hep kids understand something we tend to talk to them about often I wish the online version would allow for the text to go larger.
Messy pictures
Contains all good manners, but I suppose the pictures are too messy
Good for small children
Such a cute witty book. I am using it with young students in school.

This is such a cute book that we had to get our own copy after falling in love with it from the library. Cute story, fun illustrations, good tips!
So funny!
This book is hilarious! I wish it came with a way to pronounce some if the words (youll see what i mean!)
Nice kids book.
My Granddaughter loves this series of books.

Great book on manners for a classroom
Frustrating
Quiet difficult to read due to writing pretty much all over the page ie upside down, sideways. Frustrating!
Good for beginning of the year
I read this to my students at the beginning of the year. A cute/funny way to discuss the golden rule.

Cute book about the "golden rule." Would probably be best for early school age children (ex., K-2).
Good book!
Good book! Nice illustrations!
Fun FUn FUN !
I have given this and Arnie The Doughnut as combo gifts 8 times - Kids 3 < up (parents) LOVE the characters, the little quips that are all over each page, always applying a kind straight forward lesson in manners the kids gobble right up and automatically used in fun engaging ways!! "Did you say cheese or please?" gets laughs daily & now the 7 year old keeps cracking up her 3 year old sister keeping the lesson and laughter alive! Laurie Keller books are always a hit!
Super fun book on being kind
We’re in a BPSA group where the younger kids are called otters so this book was perfect. It’s a fun play on words and the kids loved the illustrations.
Wonderful
I loved this story! I teach first grade and each time I read this book it cracks me up... Which then cracks my students up... Which then causes them to check this book out from the school library. The love of a good book combined with much-needed lessons about respect and integrity.
Do Unto Otters
We are absolutely IN LOVE with Laurie Keller's books. We own, and read on a regular basis, each one. The Scrambled States of America, Open Wide Tooth School Inside, Arnie the Donut, Grandpa Gazillions Number Yard have all been favorites in our book collection. Do Unto Otters didn't dissapoint us! What a fun read! My son enjoys the references to other books hidden in the margins and back covers. Thanks Laurie, we can't wait for your next book!!!
Great book!
This is a great book about manners that can used at home with my own children, at school with my students, and with the children I teach in the Children's Ministry at church. I gave this book five stars because it shares an important topic in a kid friendly way that is useful in a variety of settings. I would definitely recommend it to any parent, educator, or Sunday school teacher.
Love the play on words and overall message
Very cute story. Really grabs my children's attention.

Your children will love these too.
Manners are very important
Watch your manners, this book will help kids learn to be respectful! Loved it!
A Great Childres Book of Manners
This is a very well thought out book on manners for small children. My two year old grandson loves to have me read it to him and he is learning that manners are important.
Awesome and hilarious.
Awesome! My kids are quoting it. The golden rule is actually a confusing piece of grammar for a four year old, and this book helps, I think.
Five Stars
Cute book for kids to be kind
Not a teaching tool
Unless your 6 year old is very keen on puns, this book will not teach the golden rule in any meaningful way. While the concept for the story is cute, it never explains the golden rule beyond the pun.
Nice book to teach social skills
Nice book to teach children about social skills. It's a little bit longer than needed, but is still a good book.
Great Fun! Even for a child who doesn't agree
I have a child who thinks that you you should do to "Otters" what they do to you and doesn't want to get that you should treat others how you want to be treated. The Golden Rule is used to his advantage to explain why he did something to someone else. He enjoys the book and we are able to open the discussion about what the Golden Rule really means because this book is fun.
A book for all children
Love this book - great message in a form that my granddaughter loves.
Great lesson on the Golden Rule
Nice story
Great book about manners- not preachy!
Very cute book for kids. It is sometimes funny, but always teaching. My grandson is 27 mo. Old & he liked all the animals.

So cute, and a fantastic classroom tool.
Really cute book
This is a really cute and funny book about manners and doing unto others (or Otters!). It was cute, and the kids loved it, and maybe took away a good lesson.
A Story to be enjoyed by Kids and Adults, with valuable lessons.

Better for kids who understand multiple meanings
Cute book for teaching manners and positive behavior. Better for kids who understand multiple meanings...not pre-K.
Book shelf must!
Amazing book! Students loved it. Great message. Will use this one for years to come!
Cute book
Such a cute book with a good lesson
Very cute and informative
This is a very cute, fun, and informative book that helps teach children manners and how to treat "otters" (others).
Not for reading aloud
This book would be better for kids that can read on their own. Book is all over the place and it is hard to read aloud to my 5 year old. There are things written all over the page and in different directions so you have to navigate through it and see which parts you should actually read out loud. It is a wacky way of explaining manners. My son thought some of it was funny and the manners that are being discussed are great, but I don't believe he really got the message.
Character building skills to learn!
Perfect book to share about kindness, character, and manners!
Love!
What a great book! Not only super fun to read, but great messages too! We read it every night when we were having some challenges with our son and I think it made an impact on his behavior. Recommend!
One of the best children's books on manners!
Do Unto Otters is one of our favorite books. Not only does it review good manners, but it gives great examples for the use of good manners. It is written in such a way that it really shows children the value of treating others as they wish to be treated. I also think it has helped my children feel more comfortable in new situations by giving them a real behavior code. Meeting other people seems to be less intimidating for them since we've gotten and read this book. It is well written and very nicely illustrated. I recommend it to everyone!!
Manners
I got this book for my kiddos hoping it would help teach them manners as they seemed to have forgotten how to use them even though i correct them but they are still young so we will see.
Very cute book with a great message
Bought this for my six year old whose manners seemed to be slipping quite frequently. It really helped! We are back on track. This book is adorable, entertaining for us both, and teaches the importance of using our manners and being polite and empathetic people.

Great book for teachers or parents that want to remind children of good manners! It's clever and funny and my 5th graders love it every year!
My boy has good manners, but it's something I want to keep ...
My four year-old son really likes this book. It touches on all the basics of common courtesy without hitting them over the head with it or preaching, as it's done in a humorous manner. My boy has good manners, but it's something I want to keep reinforcing as he plays with neighbor kids whose parents are very lax, to put it mildly, and I don't want my boy to pick up their bad habits. He thinks this book is hilarious. We have a few other manners books, but they're not as hilarious to my son as this one. Warning: there's sort of a very small fart joke in this book, but you CAN easily skip over it or make up something else, HOWEVER, you'd be missing a private opportunity to talk to your kid about how to handle passing gas in public. My son looks forward to other books by this author!
Love the take on "do unto others" and the kids ...
We've owned this book for years and have read it to the kids since they were little. Love the take on "do unto others" and the kids laugh every time we read it. Bought this copy to give as a birthday gift. It brought just as much laughter to my child's friend as it did to my kids! Teaches kids in a fun way how to behave and be kind to other people, even if they're different than you.
Adorable and a great moral lesson
Adorable book! It's a great was to help kids think of how they treat others. My daughter's really enjoyed the cute characters.
Adorable
Very cute book I recommend for preschoolers.

Love this book!! I read it in my life skills class last year.
Great book!
Great book for kids who bully. It teaches kids to accept others and be respectful. Great for teachers and parents. I actually purchased this book for the neighborhood kids and my own. They enjoyed it a lot and was able to learn from it.
Good read.
This book was enjoyable. The words used to explain things were sometimes a bit advanced but still a good book.

Love
My 6 and 3 year old love this book. Such a cute way to teach morals
Respect
This is an ADORABLE book that can be used to introduce good manners to students at the beginning of the school year, despite their ages. I read this to my four second and first grade classes over the first week of school and ended the cumulative activity with students signing a poster stating "Doo-dee-doo unto otters as you want otters to doo-dee-doo unto you!" They loved it and now we have something to reference throughout the rest of the year when poor choices are made later on.
Delightful way to encourage good manners!
My kids and I love this book! Charming and fun way to talk about a not necessarily fun topic. It's also a fun read aloud for small groups.
Great book about how to treat others!
I loved this book for my kiddo! It made this lesson on how to treat others enjoyable and simplified.

Favorite Children's Author
Seriously, my 7-yr-old daughter cannot get enough of Laura Keller's books. They are all hilarious. This one is particularly funny for her because they have the golden rule posted in her classroom.

I wasn’t so excited with the story or the illustrations.

We Love Laurie Keller!
This is such a fun book on Manners! It covers many of the basics, and it has memorable characters. My kids and I LOVE Laurie Keller's quirky style that keeps them engaged on every page.
good for 5+
I bought this for my 2 1/2 yr old grandson and it's a bit too old for him. As a retired librarian, I'd say this was better suited to 5-8 years. It's nicely done and has a great message.
Love It!
I'm reading this book to my class. They love it!! Nice illustrations and message.
