The fully-updated second edition of Diversity, Oppression, and Change introduces readers to the practice of culturally grounded social work and closely examines the diversity issues most relevant for practice, policy, and research in social work and allied fields. In order for a social worker to affect positive change, it is critical to understand how the intersectionality of social factors-including race, ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual orientation, and ability status-affect not only the client but also the social worker. The authors of this book unpack the complex theory-based concepts related to oppression and privilege so that readers can learn to appropriately address the impact of historically-based oppression for certain groups and communities. Working with these communities to identify oppressive conditions, culturally grounded social workers facilitate real and lasting social change that will result in a more just society.

Ok summary, not stunningly insightful

This book's alright. It's clearly written and covers all the major topics related to diversity and oppression. There's some history and some theory. There are cool little "Notes from the Field" which are 4-5 examples in each chapter of real world stories related to the chapter's topic. I'd consider those the highlight of the book, though it'd be nice if they were a little more involved or in-depth. The whole approach of the book just seems very light and simplistic, and it'd be neat to see a little more thought-provocation on the topic. I'd give it three stars for content alone, but the visual and organizational presentation of the content is solid compared to other textbooks I've read, so I'll bump to four stars.

Knees don't hurt

My knees use to hurt a lot when I was working out and since I hace been taking it they feel better

Social Work Library

If you are a Social Worker this is a must-have book for your library. Does not have all the answers to cultural diversity but it is a good start.

Brief and concise

I think the material it covers is brief and concise. Sometimes I wish it got a deeper but overall a good read.

This was purchased for a Race, Culture and Oppression class. It was difficult to read and although had some great parts the other texts were able to accomplish the same thing in a far more concise manner.
