Digital Photography Complete Course: Learn Everything You Need to Know in 20 Weeks

I have absolutely no experience with a DSLR camera and bought this after reading a review posted by a mom that homeschools her high school aged daughter. I'm really glad I did. It starts exactly where I needed it to by explaining the camera controls and going from there. I love that it includes exercises to do to test yourself as well as a review/test at the end of each chapter. The subtitle reads that the course is 20 weeks. I can easily see getting through the book a lot quicker but I can also see it taking that long or longer if you reread chapters that confuse you. (Meaning me!😁) This is a great alternative to taking a photography class if you don't have any extra time or a class close to home. I'm 3 chapters in and I'm really enjoying it.

Each chapter is well organized with the exception of the quiz as the first item on a topic. If you have not read the material first, the answers may not be intuitive and can leave you frustrated as to why the provided answer is correct. The other issue I have with the book is that, while I have a bridge camera that has a superzoom, the material is not always helpful when it comes to learning the operation with respect to the topics being presented as Taylor focuses on a DSLR and multiple lenses. Further, his discussions of fixing photos are not helpful if you do not have the same software he discusses. I think this book would be excellent for the rank novice with absolutely no knowledge of f-stops, shutter speed or ISO's, or for a home-school environment as each chapter has multiple exercises to complete which each require several hours. However, for those who have a life other than their camera, devoting hours a day to the practice exercises is impractical. I found a camera-specific guidebook more helpful in learning to use my camera and suggest that you consider that option, too.

I am a home school mom and I use this book for my daughter's elective class. It explains everything so well. It definitely is a complete course. I highly recommend it. My daughter loves it! She reads it on her own time even when she doesn't have an assignment. It has bright colorful pictures with great explanations. It has diagrams and ideas to try. We are learning everything to how to hold the camera, how to take pictures in different areas, how to take multiple pictures and put them together. This book is so worth the money. There is so much in it to learn and see.

This book is incredibly detailed. Its a must have for a newbie, or just as an all around reference guide for the avid photographer. Easy to read with tons of pictures, you just can't beat that. I started photography a little over 2 years ago and i decided to pick this book up and just use it as a guide now every now and then.

Each module (e.g. exposure, contrast, depth of field) is laid out like a week-long class with a pre-assessment, explanation of the theory, specific examples of what to do to adjust the topic at hand, then "assignments" (ideas for practice), self-assessment at the end, and tips for post-production. Each module is followed with a review of "what you have learned" with a quiz that you can take or skip. The book is laid out very well with easy-to-read diagrams, chunks of text, pictures, examples, etc. It's very easy to follow. It does not cover things 100% in-depth, but it told me what I needed to ask Google (e.g. I was curious about the origin of ISO and how it translates to digital photography, and I needed more information on spot-metering, so I augmented). I bought this book because I wanted to become better at photography this year. I have a middle-of-the-road DSLR camera and I know SOME things, but not how or why they work. As an example, I knew that a higher ISO made my picture lighter, but not why. I also knew how to change aperture, and what it did, but I didn't really know how to combine these things in certain situations. Rather, I'd experiment until I found a picture I liked, then hope that what I saw on my screen was what would actually turn out! It's a hefty book, but useful to pick and choose modules to learn when I realize that I don't understand them! I definitely recommend!

It gives you lessons like a school book and after each chapter it gives you a quiz to test your knowledge. Someone who loves photography made this book as it has personality. Only issue was the page cover sleeve had a bend in it.

This book is formatted like a textbook which I love since it breaks up a massive amount of information in the book into manageable lessons. It starts from the basics and gives you a lesson per week for 20 weeks though obviously you can learn at your own pace. There is a quiz with an answer key at the end of each lesson. There are tons of exercises throughout the book.

I began reading it when my mother brought the book home from our local library. I was so enthused by its layout and lack of professional jargon that I ordered it from Amazon as a birthday gift to myself last February. If I had them, I'd give it five thumbs up. :)

This review does not cover the book itself which appeared to be decent, at least to the point I was able to read it. Rather, it addresses how readily Amazon will implicitly change the terms under which they sell their digital content, and throwing their customers under the bus while doing so. When I purchased the book last summer I opted to add it to my Amazon Cloud Reader collection. The reason is that I prefer reading on my laptop over reading on a tablet or a phone. I was reading off and on for a few weeks, attempting to return to it after taking a break. Lo and behold, the book will no longer open in cloud reader. Instead, I am getting a message that Cloud Reader could not open the book (it could before) but that I could install a free Kindle Reader app and read it that way. I don't have a Kindle and I don't want one because I found my laptop more pleasing on my eyes that any Kindle I have tried. I certainly don't want to read a book full of large pictures on a small cell phone. And the download links won't work for my laptop because I am not running Windows (or MacOS) and it was not made clear at the time of purchase I might some day need one just to read that book. Needless to say, I would not have purchased the digital version of this book in the first place had those strings attached clearly been laid out, or that Amazon may change terms unilaterally at any moment of their choosing. I was trying but I could not find a link to complain to Amazon directly. I am therefore using a book review as the only recourse to vent my anger. If you are the book author reading this, I realize it's probably not your fault. Rather, it's Amazon screwing your readers on your behalf.

This ebook is basically a PDF document. Impossible to read with small text, clutter page design, and landscape orientation. Getting through a single page requires scrolling in every direction multiple times. Absolute trash! I'm so angry to have wasted my money on this. Format aside, the content is garbage as well. The entire book is basically a bunch of bullet points, with images taking up 80% of the page space. The book never gets to a single point. you will not learn anything substantive from this book. You will only learn just enough to understand that you don't know anything about photography.

I checked many books on the topic and they were written in very chaotic manner and the material was so chopped and thrown i pieces that were out of order and disorganized and add to that the visuals being totally boring and blah... This book is just prefect. Hard covers, beautiful content, superbly organized and illustrated. This book is just fantastic tool for someone who is entering the world of digital fotography and can lead you through the new and unfriendly forest like the best of the friends. When you emerge on the other side of the wisdom you will be a pro. Love it . Love it. Love it!

Finally, a digital photography that starts with the very basic information in an understandable way. Will be using it for a long time to come. Would recommend it for any beginner or amateur who wants to improve knowledge.

So excited I found this course for my daughter. It turns out she was looking for this course book, and I did not know it. I was just looking around on Amazon one day and found this book. It looked like something my daughter would use. So happy I bought it for her. She couldn't stop talking about how happy she was I bought this for her. She stated that this course covers so many areas she wanted to learn more about.

I bought this book after receiving a Canon EOS 80D for Christmas. I had never used a DSLR. After taking a photography class in town and then looking through this book, I realize that it is not that helpful. If you want to learn how to shoot in manual mode this book is not all that helpful. It is great for concepts and terminology but it wants you to shoot in preprogrammed modes.

I haven't gone through the course yet, so my rating has more to do with the seller than the book itself. My book arrived damaged. The cover, on one corner, has a large stain as if it was wet. The book itself is not damaged, and the box it came in had no water damage either. The binding has been broken in,, which tells me someone else had this book before me. Since it's just the cover with the water damage,, ans the book itself looks new, I won't do an exchange; however, when I pay 20+ dollars for a book, I do expect it to be brand new unless it states somewhere that it is not. As for the book itself, it looks like it should be easy to understand and possible to ho through in less than 20 weeks.

This is the best book ever for someone wanting to learn photography basics and how a camera works. The step-by-step explanations, graphics, layouts, etc. are all well done. Very visually appealing. So if you are visual learner, this is for you. I bought my 13-YO granddaughter a camera for Christmas and this was the perfect accompaniment. I even bought myself a copy to brush up on my own photography skills.

This is such a fine book for both beginners and more experienced photographers. Because it covers every aspect of your digital camera and composition of photographs, you will no doubt pick up some things about either or both you had missed before, no matter how long you have been snapping pics. I found the quizzes at the beginning and end fairly worthless, but the content in between is golden. Try some of the exercises! Not as straightforward as they seem quite often, and the challenge will make you better.

I love this book. I'm usually overwhelmed by how-to photography books, which means they are quickly abandoned and forgotten about. This one is great! It is gorgeous to look at, gives easy to follow instructions, doesn't get bogged down in SUPER technical babble, and is just overall a very effective tool in learning how to use my DSLR. I highly recommend this book!!

It has everything, but the sequence is all over the place. For example, why teach sharpening your images when you haven't discussed how to get them to your computer? Why is white balance not covered until page 250? The Beginner's Guide by the same publisher has a much more logical arrangement of chapters and topics.

As a photographer I run a free group in which I attempt to help people who are interested in learning photography! Its nice to have a book to refer to when I'm asked questions I have sense forgotten...after doing photography for many years one learns their own techniques etc so its rather hard to explain the correct ways to a newbie...also I've referred many of them to purchase this book. Its an excellent book for someone who truly wants to learn the art of photography who understands its much more than just pointing a camera and clicking a button! My husband has been using the book as a teacher per se taking each chapter as a course. I definitely recommend this book!

This is basically a power point presentation that attempts to get you to learn through doing. The details behind the topics are very inadequate and what information is there, is thrown at you with a style that would make a hoarder jealous (serious overload on every page). The best way to describe this, would be to call it a collection of cliff notes, but they’re not quite good enough for you to ace the test.

I believe this book is about as good as you will find for a text book. I came to appreciate the authors understanding of the subjects quickly. The relatively small portion I read when I first picked it up was engaging. The Table of Contents is expansive. The writing style is friendly. For my purposes this book was a good purchase and I can easily recommend it to other people.

Been slowly learning photography's ropes, as I recently got a new camera. I’ve delved into the aspects of editing quite a bit, and thought I needed to become a bit more intimate with the camera itself. This book fills the bill nicely, and I’ve already made several solid advancements in my camera technique. Neatly organized and in plain language. A welcome addition to my small library of photography how-to volumes.

Great book for a beginner or hobbyist. The sections are intuitively written in an approachable manner with full color examples of the topics being discussed. Additionally, the book has several assignments to give you real hands on opportunities to apply the lessons you've learned. I highly recommend this book.

Cock full of great tips but actually a great resource for beginners or more experienced shorts looking to reinforce their knowledge. It's a project based reader which gets you to do an activity one by one throughout the book teaching you by doing. I, for one don't learn as well by memory so this is a great way to learn.

This book has been SO helpful to me. I got a fancy, to me, camera (Canon t6i) and wanted to learn how to really use it, and this did that and MORE. I'm loving this book, and it keeps you engaged.

There are some other required purchases to put the book to its full use. I don't think that it was noted prior to purchase. Anyhow, fore example, it requires a software, lens kit, wide angle lens, and some others. It is informative and gives you quizzes at the end of the chapter.

My kids got me this for Christmas I have not used my camera in years due to theft. I just got a new one and needed a refresher. This boon is so good about explaining everything ! It also has projects to try which is what helps ppl up their photography game! Thank you to the author

Lo recomiendo! tiene actividades, practicas y examenes. esta basado en cualquier camara no alguna marca especifica. yo me ayudo con el manual original de mi camara para entender especificamente el modelo y marca de la mia. Should've got this book when I started photography but even after started for so long, it's so useful. I've had 3 books from DK and this also doesn't disappoint. Already at week 2 and it's like I've been loaded with so much. Things are made simpler and very engaging. I recommend for all beginners as well as enthusiasts. Just follow from wek one till the end with lots of practice and you'll be fine.

This book was different from the others on my shelf. I did film photography for many years then made the switch to digital. There are differences and you need to know them. I felt this book was very clear in its explanations. If your getting one book this should be it.

I am very satisfied with this book, except, I feel it is far more for the expert photographer than a beginner course. I have learned a great deal about the inner workings of each listed camera, but as I am just starting out, This book goes into far more detail than I was expecting. Have started reading this amazing book. Easy to read, great pictures and broken down into lessons. This and my new beautiful red Nikon d3400 have given me something to look forward to.

This is great for anyone who wants to learn more about photography. It's so interesting an awakened a renewed passion I had years ago. Now our family enjoys going out and taking better photographs together. Great purchase, highly recommended.

I purchased this book due to a recommendation from a friend, and I'm glad I did!! This is an excellent guide to move a budding photographer past the point-and-shoot and auto setting phase! It is well written with logical progression, examples and assignments.

I have a Nikon P900 automatic camera with 80x zoom. This book is mainly useful for manual digital cameras with interchangeable lenses. Great book otherwise.

Great book! It has chapters that help you go through and read and understand the different parts of your digital camera. Many of us have digital cameras and at times want to further our knowledge. This book helps!

The size of the book alone inspires confidence that one can really learn photography from this book. I have glanced through and seen topics like depth of field and composition. I know I will find this interesting and the illustrations will make studying fun.

This book is amazing! Especially for a beginner such as myself! It breaks everything into sections, down to the best way on how to hold your camera. The book or “Text Book” because it’s so thick, so organized, color coordinated and VERY easy to follow. Though I just received it yesterday and skimmed through it, I am super excited to learn more than what I know!

I've owned a DSLR camera for years, but only with this book have I been learning how to properly use it. I have only made it through a few lessons thus far, but I've developed a better understanding of many features on my camera including: - Bracketing - HDR photography - The balance between Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO settings I still have much to learn, but this book is very helpful. The only downside is that some lessons require you to own certain types of lenses (telephoto, macro, etc.) so you may not be able to complete all lessons as written.

This book lays the foundation to grow your skills as a photographer. I'm new to the area of photography. Now, I have a better understanding of the magic in the photos.

Good for what I needed.

If you are serious about learning photography, this book is not a good one. It is the equivalent of a seminar with flashy slide shows, loud music and no real content. The lessons are brief and do not go deep enough. But if you have basic knowledge it could be helpful.
