Are you on the cusp of greatness? Do you have untapped potential and talents just waiting to be released? Read this book to learn the same creative problem-solving methodology (Design Thinking) used extensively at Stanford, Google, IDEO, and Apple. This guide will unlock your personal potential, and that of your team and your business.

By exploring the intersection of Design Thinking and strengths-finding, innovation expert John K. Coyle demonstrates what most high achievers intuitively know–that each one of us possesses a unique combination of strengths, talents, skills and capabilities to achieve breakthrough performance–but may need a code to unlock them.

Design for Strengths delivers the process, tools and mindsets required to find and maximize your hidden potential. Illuminated by a captivating narrative of Olympic training and competition, Coyle demonstrates how he used the Design Thinking process and mindset to hack the sport of speedskating and win an Olympic silver medal. This book contains real-life examples of how individuals and organizations can use Design Thinking to define the right problem, and to ask and answer a better question. Instead of "how do I fix my weaknesses?" ask "how can I design for my strengths?"

More than a dozen leading experts contributed to this book, including Steven Kotler, David and Tom Kelley, David Eagleman, Daniel Coyle, Dave Evans and Chip Conley, as well as Olympic gold medalists Apolo Ohno and Meryl Davis. Read the book to expose a hidden-in-plain-sight secret. We all contain the capacity to do something extraordinary--if we design for it.

Insightful and inspiring

I had the privilege of meeting John K. Coyle a few weeks ago. I was intrigued by the idea of an Olympic medalist who also happens to be a Design Thinking expert and TEDx speaker. As our conversation started I was blown away to learn he was about to release his book “Design for Strengths”, focusing on the intersection of strengths (think Marcus Buckingham, Strengths Finder...) and Design Thinking applied to one’s life - all of this against the backdrop of his Olympic journey. I got the book as soon as it was out and I finished it yesterday and I enjoyed it end to end. I am passionate about the intersections of different disciplines in the broader sense (i.e .psychology and technology) , and the intersections of more discrete perspectives, practices, etc. and John’s work is a very inspiring deep dive at the intersection of life design, design thinking, strengths. Highly recommended! And if you want a taste, check his TEDx talk before, “How to design moments that help you live (almost) forever"

An beautifully written book about the power we possess within ourselves

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!! I read A LOT of books. This one stands out. It is interesting as it addresses human potential. And it tackles the subject from such a different perspective. We have all been told throughout our whole lives that we need to work on our weaknesses. As a self-improvement junkie, I've focused 99% of my time on that goal. This insightful book turns that on its head and teaches us to focus on our strengths, fully developing them for maximum impact. The research shared is fascinating while also being written so that it accessible. The vignettes by various accomplished individuals add interest, and they clarify the points. The way John K. Coyle writes in almost poetic fashion about the human condition... our yearnings, obstacles, struggles and potential. It's a must read for anyone wanting to mine the incredible possibility in themselves and in the teams (families, churches, business organizations) they lead. This book will equip you to explore your strengths while invigorating you with feelings of being both inspired and encouraged.

"Design Your Life or Someone Will Design It for You"

I've had the great opportunity to attend two of John Coyle's presentations in the last year. For the first ever time in one of our partner meetings, I witnessed not one mobile phone had left its pocket or purse while he was on the stage--all eyes were firmly on John and his captivating stories. I'm happy to report that John's enthusiasm and parables for living life to its fullest indeed translate very well into the pages of his new book. His book provides a blueprint for reframing and coming at life from different angles and perspectives outside of the frame in which you currently live. Excellent work--I highly recommend this book. I also recommend seeing him in person if you ever have the opportunity.

Five Stars

I loved reading John's book. Well written and told from the respective of personal experience. John's words have stayed with me weeks after reading his book. It's not a book you read and put away. It's a book that opens up a larger view on we approach success and life. Also, I was fortunate to have attended John's 'Time Expansion Summit' on Powder Mountain. While the actual event was @42+ hours I felt as if I had been a week. Amazing how True that Time dilates.

Enlightening, compelling and profound– A unique, narrative lens on Design Thinking!

John Coyle combines vivid storytelling, professional tenor, an engaging voice and conceptual wisdom to skillfully unpack and reframe a process that is constantly talked about but rarely understood or appreciated. It is both an easy read for anyone, and genuinely educational for even the most seasoned Design Thinking professional. Coyle celebrates Design Thinking while also taking it down from its niche pedestal and presenting it as a tool for solving any type of problem, business or personal. This book is a call for empathy and a roadmap for how to employ it! A must read for any thoughtful business leader.

A pragmatic and fully engaging design strategy for meeting your life goals.

Have you spent large portions of your time or energy trying to force a square peg into a round hole? Perhaps this question applies to your career, or to the pursuit of your passion, or the achievement of a lifetime goal. What John Coyle explains so aptly are the reasons (both individual and cultural) WHY we keep banging on that square peg, when really we just need to reach for a round peg. Following the method of many great communicators, he effectively uses narrative to convey his point, which makes the valuable lesson that he offers easy to receive. The relevance of this book lies in Coyle's elucidation of how to seek, identify, and ultimately utilize that elusive round peg.

I loved this book!

“Design for Strengths” is a fascinating and illuminating study of the theory and practical applications of design thinking. However, it is the author's brilliant storytelling that makes this book so compelling and enlightening. John Coyle conveys the art and practice of design thinking through the lens of his own journey as an elite athlete, as well as through the stories of other remarkable people. I could not put this book down. I became fully immersed in the incredible effort to make it to the Olympics -- the hopes, dreams, failures, frustrations, sufferings, and ultimate triumph. For anyone wanting to get “unstuck,” achieve breakthrough performance, or design a more perfect life, there is plenty of wisdom in these pages.

is a fun as it is informative

John weaves together an insightful mix of personal stories and research in an approachable and insightful way. The unique approach to both design thinking and a strengths approach, which can help individuals and teams, is a fun as it is informative. Stop trying to fix weaknesses, as John reinforces, "that ship has sailed." Instead, start designing for strengths so that you can unlock your potential.

Great Book!

I just finished “Design for Strenghths” on a flight out to DC. It’s been quite a while since I’ve enjoyed a book so much that I neglected to open my email or watch any in flight entertainment!! I used to read almost every flight and this book reignited my fire. I enjoyed Johns story and how he related it back to how design thinking. I know I can and will use the concepts in my company. I plan on buying the book for all my leadership team. Kevin Carlin, Owner, Meridian Senior Living

It's a good, entertaining read

I rarely read books, but this one I read cover to cover. As a long time skater, coach, engineer and business owner, I connected with Design for Strengths in more than one way. I appreciate his "out of the box" thinking for problem solving. I'm using some of the book concepts during my coaching sessions. I'm recommending this book to my students, friends and clients. It's a good, entertaining read.

This book is Conscious.

This book is Conscious. Possibly, the most Conscious book out right now: I heard stories in here with emotional depth to the level that has never existed before in business writings. It’s nice to know our species is still evolving.

ENGAGING!

There are few people who can weave together powerful real life stories with comprehensive design thinking info like John. 5 stars, no question.

A fantastic journey into the world of Design Thinking, from theory into practice, peppered with stories and interviews that pop.

Design for Strengths is easily the best book I’ve read in quite some time. I can’t remember the last time that I was so quickly and completely entranced by a book. John Coyle takes his reader on an eclectic, head-spinning journey across a number of fields to help get at the heart of a question that vexes us all: how do I get better? Generic, broad-stroked question? Over-generalized assumption on my part? You bet. However, in simplest terms, isn’t that why we read books like Design for Strengths? Aren’t we trying to crack the code on how to get better at…something? I think it is. I know that’s why I picked up this book, and I was not disappointed by the very thorough exploration in which the author engages. John is a heck of a guide, and I found myself having to stop to read certain passages and sections again. Some of it is dense and requires a pause to contemplate. The book at once begs to be picked up and put down again, if for no other reason than to let the brain steep. As the book progresses, Coyle pivots from the theoretical to the practical, allowing his take on the principles of Design Thinking to come to life by juxtaposing the process with the process applied in his life. I’ve watched a number of John’s talks, and he has a gift for storytelling. Either that, or, as an elite athlete and my submission for “The Most Interesting Man in the World,” he simply has good stories to tell. Regardless, Coyle does something that only an elite class of author can effectively do: bridge theory to practice via stories that, in their telling, feel personal and relevant to the reader. Authors like Seth Godin, Daniel Pink, Marcus Buckingham, Malcolm Gladwell, and Keith Ferrazzi fall into this category, and I think John Coyle and Design for Strengths deserve consideration for inclusion. Is it a perfect book? Hardly, but perfection isn’t why the book resonates so strongly with me. It resonates because Coyle has something to say, something to share with the world, based on the best of intentions. It’s a book worth celebrating and sharing.

Intellectual exploration surrounded by entertaining stories - I love it!

This book makes it easy for busy professionals to understand the hype around Design Thinking. John's in-depth understanding of the topic is illuminated by perspectives from top experts in the innovation and design thinking community. I will be applying these concepts to my work team to generate value for the business and bring out the best in the high-achievers that surround me. From the minds of creative designers to the executive suite, and from sweat and tears of practice to the Olympic podium, this book shows you how to find an edge, leverage it, and breakthrough to peak performance. This book fits right up there with Steven Kotler's Stealing Fire, Chip Conley's Peak and Daniel Pink's When.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Growth & Inspiration!

"Design for Strengths" has enlightened me on both individual and team oriented levels. The insights included by other greats in team and individual accomplishments enhance each chapter's central points. While there is so much to be gained intellectually, it is not difficult to understand - much of it reads like an enjoyable story. This book has shown me how to capitalize on my strengths and even use my weaknesses to my advantage. I recommend this book not only as self-improvement, but as a personally inspirational and business growth handbook.

How Design for Strengths changed how I see my strengths and weaknesses.

It's hard to put into words how impactful Design for Strengths has made in my life. I have just finished reading the book, and I want to collect my thoughts now in hopes of doing it all justice. John K Coyle book is rooted in Design Thinking, a new concept to me, and how to use it to lean into your strengths to achieve breakthrough performance. For a while, I suffered from a belief that I needed to be great at everything and this book took out all my old beliefs and threw them on the floor. Giving me the greatest gift to examine on they are benefiting my life. What I discovered is that I was going about my strengths all wrong. I could feel that I was dulling my strengths by improving my weaknesses, but I couldn't put it all into perspective until reading this book. This book is that perspective I needed to understand why I do what I do and how I can leverage that into areas of my life with great success. I needed to see myself and accept my strengths and weaknesses and eventually learn how to apply a proven methodology to succeed. Do does it read? His book is read and filled with stories that relate to his experience and coming into alignment and understanding of design thinking. This helps to break up the content that makes the book easy and enjoyable to read. Since he is an Olympic athlete, he is not without amazing stories from experiences that I will never have. I consider this another bonus as I get to learn more about another's persons successes and failures. Pros Easy to understand concepts Easy to apply concepts Great storytelling Cons Nothing that I can think at the moment.

Very easy read while packing in the info on a subject that deserves more attention.

I've enjoyed John's talent for telling great stories over the years about sports, especially speedskating and cycling, that were both entertaining and insightful, through his blog, and, I've enthusiastically recommended them to others to read. John takes that storytelling to a new level and employs it to help others enjoy and learn about the passion and strength of his that is design thinking. This subject will help anyone improve themselves or their team or organization. John boils it down to an easy read while packing this book full of great information. It is a pretty effortless and fast read for being so packed with info thanks to John's story telling and design abilities. Valuable for an individual on their own, but even more so for people in coaching, consulting, leadership, or product design, process design, marketing, and many other aspects of business, sports and other endeavors, especially where team situations are involved. Inspirational and practical, the book leaves you wanting to learn more and try to apply what you've already taken in. Looking forward to more from John on this and other related topics. Thank you John.

Through engaging narrative John Coyle explains the design thinking process ...

Through engaging narrative John Coyle explains the design thinking process and how he successfully applied it to capitalize on his own strengths and design for his weaknesses. Integrated into his compelling story line are insights from leading experts which serve to illustrate further the design process and its potential for helping us solve complex challenges. I was impressed by how cohesively these interviews fit into the storyline. What I valued most is John's perspective on talent and effort and his discussion of the tension between "Try, try again" and "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is insanity." I found myself underlining and highlighting and revisiting key ideas about finding and cultivating our strengths while allowing ourselves to quit what we don't do best--though it's not quite as simple as it sounds here, which is why reading the book is so invaluable!! Thought-provoking research embedded in an impactful storyline make this difficult to put down--loved it!!

A book about WHY

Most books focus on HOW, this one is all about WHY doing Design Thinking and each step of it. A life-long experience is shared while bringing in why it matters, why it is designed as it is and why things work. The last thing one could expect is being touched by a "technical" book, but tears are not prohibited. Aside from the touching personal history and how design thinking concepts helped the author, each chapter features an interview topic with one design thinking thought-leader that worth by its own. The book is full of insights that may help you to be a better design thinking practitioner, highly recommended.

I highly recommend this book

Design for Strengths is an incredible tool for every tool business executive seeking to find the right questions in order to arrive at the ideal solutions. The combination of John's extraordinary insight coupled with the contributors' stories, give the reader a balance that activates ideas and leads to action. I highly recommend this book.

Great Book ... Great Message

I was at a speech where John explained his concept of kairos and time expansion. I then bought his book and devoured it in a couple of days. He's on to something here with these ideas. Aside from the incredibly interesting concepts, his own story is genuinely compelling. This juice is worth the squeeze ... buy it and read it.

A real description of using Design Thinking to find success

Filled with live interviews with top design experts, including Stanford University Professors that were involved in the original design of the mouse for Apple, plus many other examples of various and useful interesting situations that will appeal to the reader. This is at fast paced keeps the reader glued to the pages.

I quickly fell in love with John's thoughtful

I was given Design For Strengths: Applying Design Thinking to Individual and Team Strengths as a gift. I must start by saying I was a little hesitant to begin reading this book, frankly, because I thought "Design Thinking" was going to be beyond me intellectually. I quickly fell in love with John's thoughtful, and quite engaging style of writing. He easily brings the reader right into a clear picture of what thinking and changing the way one thinks, can do to enhance your strengths individually and as a team leader ... how moving forward, design thinking can help grow the strengths of a team. I never imagined this would be one of those books I wouldn't want to put down, but it is just that! YOU will not want to stop reading and you will begin to look for John Coyle's next book as soon as you finish. Definitely a book to purchase and read as soon as possible. Don't pass this one up!

Highly recommend

Wasn't that sure I would get much from the book, but to my surprise, it was quite thought provoking... and entertaining. John is a fantastic storyteller and the way he weaves his athletic career stories into the central premise of the book is masterful. The stories both elucidate and entertain. The way he wraps up the book deviates slightly from the main topic, but the lesson conveyed is as important as anything else in the book.

Strengthening

Every parent and kid should read this book.

John’s stories, and this book, are compelling reading.

Having worked with John and been privileged to hear him speak many times, I was surprised at how well his storytelling skills translated into this book. Despite his success, John is uniquely humble and gracious in sharing his experience and guidance. I’m already a “believer” in and practitioner of Design Thinking and Strengths, and there was still a lot for me to learn. John’s stories, and this book, are compelling reading.

Quick read, entertaining narrative, useful approach

I enjoyed reading this book more than expected. The entertaining narrative made for a quick read and the concepts presented offer a useful perspective and process for approaching a number of different challenges in business, athletic performance and life.

Motivation

Fun read with good examples of design thinking. Read through the book and feel motivated for my next steps!

... we can feel and perform at our all time best by reframing how we think about it

John Coyle helps us tap into how we can feel and perform at our all time best by reframing how we think about it. This book just made it to the top of my bookshelf and one I will be revisiting often. A true gift to all that read it!

It's a "my highlighter ran out" kind of read

In my book, Where Others Won't, I wrote a passage called 'Focus On Strengths' which outlined our need to move away from our obsession with what our employees can't do. John has gone a step further and written an entire book about how to break down whatever it is you do, and rebuild it around what you do best. I was a fan of the original essay, and I'm a fan of the book. It's a "my highlighter ran out" kind of read. Highly recommend.

Sufficient information on applying design thinking and strengths in sports, nothing in behaviours.

I am quite familiar with the strengthsfinder and strengths related methodology, hence my investment in the book. I was unclear about design thinking, and found that my understanding of design thinking has vastly improved after reading this book. The application of strengths is shown through the author's experience as an Olympic Ice Skater. So the book is based on hindsight. It's great if you are into this sport, but not much use if you aren't. So in my view, some chapters could have been written differently, particularly chapter 8. The author also doesn't show how a tool like Strengthsfinder (which he mentions in the book) can be used to apply strengths in a non-sports situation, which is where I have seen the need for people to actually use and lead with their strengths. So while some areas of the using strengths are mentioned, such as the flow zone, an application of strengths in daily routine behaviours would have made this book extremely strong. One of the learning areas in the book are the short interviews or insights from other professionals who are extremely proficient in design thinking.

Every person in a team needs to read. Good one. A must have.
