Succeeding with data isn’t just a matter of putting Hadoop in your machine room, or hiring some physicists with crazy math skills. It requires you to develop a data culture that involves people throughout the organization. In this O’Reilly report, DJ Patil and Hilary Mason outline the steps you need to take if your company is to be truly data-driven—including the questions you should ask and the methods you should adopt.
You’ll not only learn examples of how Google, LinkedIn, and Facebook use their data, but also how Walmart, UPS, and other organizations took advantage of this resource long before the advent of Big Data. No matter how you approach it, building a data culture is the key to success in the 21st century.
You’ll explore:
- Data scientist skills—and why every company needs a Spock
- How the benefits of giving company-wide access to data outweigh the costs
- Why data-driven organizations use the scientific method to explore and solve data problems
- Key questions to help you develop a research-specific process for tackling important issues
- What to consider when assembling your data team
- Developing processes to keep your data team (and company) engaged
- Choosing technologies that are powerful, support teamwork, and easy to use and learn

Data Driven goes nowhere
I expected great things from a book subtitled "Creating a Data Culture." I hoped to read the vision of two data science leaders and glean insight about team and organizational strategies. What I found instead was an uninspiring account of daily tactics used by data technicians and old examples of the decisions driven by data. Furthermore, in these examples, they do nothing to support their claim that data had anything to do with the success to which they link it. Grammatically speaking, their paragraph has "no data" to support their broad generalizations. Additionally, in at least one example (GE Aviation), their claim is either false or so vague or poorly communicated as to give it the appearance that it is false: it's their suggestion about the use of GE's jet engine data that fails to meet muster. I can say this as an experimental test pilot, mathematician, engineer, and published industry expert. Finally, their recommendations for "data processes" fall flat. Their recommendations sound more like tactics, something to add to a daily to-do list than processes. They share their own experience rather than broad, far-reaching advice.
Data Driven Principles
Data access, data democracy, open data driven discussions, dashboards, asking the right questions and using accessible tools and accurate sources of clean data are critical to true data driven organizations. As data becomes easier to gather and analyze, the approach to its use is critically important. This series is a good business oriented approach to data science. Good read.
Easy Read with A LOT of Great Information to Chew On
I'm wrapping up a data science degree and really want to have an impact on the data culture where I work. This book is a short read with A LOT of GREAT information to take away and discuss with management. I'm even considering stepping out of my comfort zone and buying several copies to distribute to leadership in the hopes of sparking discussion.
Practical and interesting
This book is a good read to know how to learn a data cuture in any organization and how to allow people across the business participate in the data driven transformation.
Nice intro from fresh angle
This flowing quick read provides introduction on the topic from fresh angle, ie. it does not focus on tooling but practices. Understandable to general business public, not only IT guys and gals
Excellent
It's a must read for non Data Scientist that want to start a data strategy within the company, and a must read for Data Scientist to develop strategies to leverage business results.

Nice book

Quick primer
Quick easy read of important topics to become a data driven org. Should be an easy 15 mins reading. 2 very prominent voice in his his space!!
Fluff
fluffy stuff! no substance
Good at basics
It was basic and easy to read. It did not bridge some gaps on how non-technical people will actually use data. He gives examples where data works but does not where it does not. He implies data is the answer when it has been around forever and is actually just a tool.
Good baseline look at Data in Business Intelligence
This is an easily consumed paper. It has a solid perspective on how to approach data in the current age. Terms like "big data" get thrown around, but few people can agree what it means. This paper gives some hooks to hang better ideas about data and what it can mean to your organization.
Loved it
I loved that it was easy to read and understand. This book wasn't filled with a ton of very difficult words to give the impression that it's more valuable. At the same time this book provides a lot of value in the form of applicable advice.
~30 minutes of required reading for anyone who works with data
Read it twice. This is a bit of concentrated wisdom and pragmatic advice that will be useful for anyone who wants to use data to make better decisions in their organization.
Five Stars
Useful ad easy to understand and implement data culture to any organization...Just wonderful book...thanks to authors
Quick easy read with good bullets
Easy to digest. Took about an hour to read. Brought out some obvious and not so obvious points to consider through the process. A good intro into a deeper discussion
Five Stars
Great read.
The shared sample chapter is average
The shared sample chapter is average. Does not really bind with Data. Needs more data driven approach as observed in sample chapter. Does not impress me to buy the book.
Good
A good read just to get familiar with the idea of data analytics and it's uses cases. Short and simple read
Good data book
Very information stuff.
Good for starter or ppt talker
Simple and comprehensive, Good for starter or ppt talker. But not intensive explain what process and methodology
Four Stars
Nice overview, wished it would be longer and more details

Insight Into Daily Data
A wonderful read for anybody looking to get their feet wet in data culture. This short book provides a high level overview of data-driven best practices for modern businesses. The book is easy to understand and contains many insights from industry leading professionals. Hope to see more from Hilary and DJ in the future.
A must read book for all, gives more insight ...
A must read book for all, gives more insight on how data can be effectively use to improve your business. You will spend less than an hour to read this book but the information that you will get will help you in long run.
Data driven reading
There are some good points and timely reminders of how you need to get your data out of jail and democratise it (the no.1 message I see across all data/information guidance), but even in such a short book it still relies too much on a few clichéd examples from companies that are nothing like the one you work for (size, market, etc.). That said, I would still recommend reading it.
Good ideas and super easy reading
A good kick off for you and your company to take the advantages that Data can bring. It’s short and clear on the concepts that could help into bringing data to the whole company
Concise, Informative and to the point
This short book communicates effectively what it means for an organization to be data driven and the role of data scientist. Author also has shared some insights in building a data culture into your organization. I enjoyed reading it. I feel there should've been more case studies about how data influenced the decisions big organizations made, and also some discussion on opportunities for people as well as startups in field of Data science. Overall it was a good read.
Simple and useful.
Data Science is an hard theme to discuss. This work was good in that abordation. I will learn more about this
Bem resumido. Básico
Aponta os principais cuidados na adoção desta estratégia. Alguns deles facilmente subestimados. Muito resumido. É bom como rápida introdução. Se quiser aprofundar vai ter que ler outra coisa.
Amazing concepts and information
Amazing concepts and information .Its easy to understand the complex things .Really helped by the contents available.I would suggest this to the people who are in data science or looking for transition in the filed of data science.

Good Book must read
Good book for senior management to get a grasp of data relevance in current context. Many lessons can be taken to real world and implemented
Organización vs herramientas
Buena introducción de cómo orientar una empresa hacia una data driven company obviando las herramientas o absurdos roles. Buena lectura de tarde de lluvia.
General but good introduction
It provides a general and superficial perspective about data driven. Even though, it is a good introduction to the theme.
Four Stars

Leitura simples e objetiva
Conteúdo prático, simples e objetivo. Gostei!
Good
Good and well done , need more concrete examples. But in general I would say it was useful to read
If you want to learn skip this book
Just says why it is is important, but doesn't say how to actually yo do things. Nothing about algorithms and techniques. Just an article from a journal.
Go ahead buy it, it's for free.
Really nice book to read and learn DJ.
Very good
The book is just like it says. It is not a step by step book, It shows and discuss about data culture. I liked Very much.
